Title: THE METAPHYSICAL ME
Post by: bk on January 15, 2004, 12:03:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about the metaphysical things I spoke of, and you are therefore ready to post metaphysically and also re our topic o' the day.  To it, I say.

Ever since BK first mentioned his impression of it, I've been thoroughly intrigued by the concept of Don Knotts as Tevye. :D

Oh no. :( Not Fiddler. I was scarred for life, I tell you, scarred when I saw a production of it a few years ago in Philly at a high school. Hodel was in her 40s. She and Tevye could have been lovers. That is probably the most horrific you can get.

I always thought Hodel should have been named Hotel.  After all, you've got Motel, you should have Hotel.

All right, everyone, I must retire to dreamland. I'm going to bed while the sweet strains of Billy Joel's "Lullabye" run through my head. Goodnight!

Hehehe...I remember when Jed understudied Tevye for a summer prodution.  Apparently his understudy cast of daughters was causing some rather incestuous thoughts for Tevye :)

My 3 daughters were hot!  And, funnily, two of them were older than me! :D

Okay, let's have Don Knotts as Tevye, Mary Tyler Moore as Golde, Ruta Lee as Hodel, Brent Barrett as the Rabbi, Ann Reinking as Fruma Sara, and Cady Huffman as Yenta.
Title: Re:THE METAPHYSICAL ME
Post by: S. Woody White on January 15, 2004, 12:33:50 AM
For Tevye and Golde, I suggest Harvey Fierstein and Rosie O'Donnel.  When they get bored, they can trade roles.
Title: Re:THE METAPHYSICAL ME
Post by: Michael on January 15, 2004, 03:29:19 AM
Rabbi: Pope John Paul II

Golde: Michael Jackson (His voice is high enough and he already has the makeup)

Tevye: Brenda Vaccaroo (Her voice is deep enough)

Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Chritine Agulara and the Olsen Twins as Tevye's Daughters

Michael Musto as Yenta

Fruma Sara: Joan Crawford with her voice dubbed by Carol Richards (Fruma Sara is dead and so is Joan. So why not?)

Motel: Tom Bodett (Karma point to the fist person who knows why)

Perchick: Jeff Stryker (If anyone heard him sing country & Western knows why)

Fydeka: Ashton Kutcher (Or he can have an affair with Golde)

No more Karma.  :'(  Oh well....

Thursday....Fiddler on the Roof...I was wearing my Fiddler on the Roof T-shirt yesterday!  That is ...like...  Karma!

Okay.  I like the ideas we have so far...but I guess this is the Dinner Theater production cast:

Tevye - Gavin MacCleod
Golde - Gale Storm
Yente -  Shirley Boone

Tzeitel - Maureen McCormick
Hodel - Eve Plumb
Chava - Susan Olsen

Motel - Barry Williams
Perchik -  Christopher Knight
Fyedka -  Mike Lookinland

Lazar Wolf - Ed Asner
Fruma Sarah - Betty White

Motel: Tom Bodett (Karma point to the fist person who knows why)

Because he shills for a motel chain, I think Motel 6.
So, how do I receive this "karma"?

Actually, I'm glad it's gone.  The fewer things we have to measure, the better.  I'm for banning SUVs.

BK wrote, yesterday:

I thought that's what surfing is... spreading the tide.

I attended the free concert in Central Park with Bell and Chenoweth.  I remember being disappointed that her Glitter and Be Gay wasn't funnier.  As if she was well known for comedy and wanted to show off her soprano.  Couldn't have picked a more wrong song for keeping her humor under wraps, though.

DW Joy is off at an audition.  I hope the snow will deter some of the bridge and tunnel crowd today, but she doesn't believe it will.

As Sammy Davis Jr. was Jewish, I think he'd have made a fine Tevye.  Alannis Morisette for Golde.  Julia Stiles as Yente.  The daughters: the Surpremes.  Their suitors: The Pips.  Lazar Wolf: Wolfgang Puck.  And, as the rabbi, Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello)

Ben,

I look forward to each day's pictures. Thanks.

For some reason, today's (with just the necessary labels) made me think about a photo that my friend Patty's aunt displayed prominently atop her TV set. The aunt had taken a vacation to the Catskills when Marjorie Morningstar was being filmed there. The framed photo was of three people, each one captioned for the benefit of those having trouble identifying the subjects:

"Natalie Wood"     "Gene Kelly"     "Helen"

And Jennifer, you DO know that throughout the entire show, the place the men come from is showed along with their name? So unless there's more than one man from Montreal, it's kind of obvious who you're talking about...

Well I doubt anyone on here would care that much to look.  I just didn't want to spoil the show by giving his name.  Although I actually don't think they put where he was from. It just said Harold Hersh, pro hockey player Illinois (which is where he plays).

He was the first guy Meredith chose to be the final 15.

DR Jason, didn't Joshua Bell and Kristin Chenoweth break up a long time ago?

Oh and I almost started to cry when some DRs were mentioning Jewish terms of endearment like "shaineh". My grandmother, who I miss very much used to call me "shaineh madoleh" all the time.

DR Laura II, last night's episode of The Appretice was a repeat of last week.  Tonight (thurs) is the new episode from 8:32pm to 9:32pm right after Friends.

Oh, I love Sam.I thought his idea to get one donor to give a lot of money (it was men vs women at a lemonade stand) was brilliant. He was the only one who realized what needed to be done.

Archie update. I just heard from the vet. Archie is stable and showing smalls signs of improvement. The vet suspects an infection. I mentioned that we had recently switched kibble brands. That's not likely the cause of the problem, but I was cautioned to make any future transitions in an extremely gradual manner.

Thanks all for the good wishes and good vibes.

Well, it took about 2 minutes to answer my question about the Roger Rees NICKLEBY production. The 8 hour show is available on VHS and DVD, but the DVD reviews at Amazon all trash the transfer as being grainy, washed out ports from the VHS masters.

Does anyone actually have this set on DVD and can corroborate that the transfer is so bad you wouldn't want to get it? I don't see A&E spending any money to revisit this set and make it better, do you?

Watched FINDING NEMO last night for the first time. After hearing everyone here rave about it I felt I was missing something! Very cute movie. Ellen DeGeneres was absolutely fantastic! She was constantly cracking me up! And the animation and color were so lovely to look at...I wish that I had seen the film on the big screen!

With FINDING NEMO, I had heard such raves about it that I sort of "dared" it to entertain me once I finally got it on DVD. I have to say it worked its spell on me and by the halfway point, I was laughing and just in awe over the brilliant color and sound. It certainly is a reference quality disc if someone wanted to show off a home theater.

Oh my DRMBARNUM now I am even more excited.....clues clues clues...hmmmmmmmm  :P

FINDING NEMO was so funny - and so well done - and the voices so well matched and directed.   :D

Every movie should entertain us as much.

I thought so DRMATTH.  My friend Marika studied with her for awhile in NYC and loved her acting technique AND her teaching technique!  I think I saw her once on "The Dick Cavett Show".....gosh....I just remembered didn't she also play Georgie in "The Country Girl"?

Jennifer: I don't think they broke up...she still thanks him in her bio. Maybe they did...I'm not sure.

Re. karma: For the record, I don't think I ever knowingly 'booed' anyone, and if I did, it was by mistake. But honestly, the option was there, and everyone understood from the beginning that there was the chance that one might be booed, and since it really didn't amount to a hill of beans in the long run, I personally don't see what the big deal was--and this is coming from a person who is notorious for being "sensitive." Anyway, my opinion doesn't really matter in the long run and the Karma function is now defunct, so now I suppose all is right with the world and we can go on with our daily lives without fear or frustration over being booed. Thank you, Mark, for getting rid of it.

Jose: You had the sirloin! You hateful, hateful thing! You know how I love that steak! I'm glad you guys are having fun in the snowy city...and I'm especially glad to hear you enjoyed URINETOWN. How was Carolee Carmello? I love her work so much. Too bad I can't catch her in this show before it closes. :\ What show are you seeing tonight?

Tonight I'll be at the Met...WERTHER. Bleh! We should be busy, though, what with the snow and all. It's awfully slow-going trying to walk the streets and sidewalks, seeing how many of them haven't been cleared yet and the snow is really, really slushy. I'm sure we'll be checking lots of galoshes and boots tonight. Rapture.

Oh, that's it, make Uncle Woody come up with reasons for you to watch Fiddler.

I got to watch the taping of a Carol Burnett special, where her two guests were Lucille Ball and Zero Mostel.  It must have been shortly after his run as Tevye.  The specialty number he performed was "If I Were a Rich Man."  Sadly, I was too young at the time to catch the irony of his singing the song while wearing a tux.

SWW how was Lucy on the special?  Was she bossy between the takes?  LOL....
During the taping, there was little chance for the studio audience to see what was happening backstage.  If there were any problems, they were kept out of earshot.

Instead, we were treated to some audio clips that Carol had recorded with Julie Andrews during their Carnegie Hall taping.  I don't remember most of those, but for some reason the one that has stuck was a discussion about how Carol had just bought a "living bra," and was going on and on about how she loved her "living bra" and what her "living bra" did for her figure.  "There's just one problem," Carol finally admitted.  "What's that?" asked Julie.  "What am I supposed to feed it?"

Also, the show was taped twice, both times with a live audience.  The final product was an intercut between the two, with little stopping unless something went seriously wrong.  (This, of course, had the advantage of keeping the material fresh for the audience.  The one scene that went wrong was a sketch between Carol and Zero, and the response at the end wasn't nearly as strong as it had been during the first take.)

Lucy?  I really don't remember all that much of her performance, other than her duing a "Charwoman" duet with Carol.

Hi, Gang.

Well, the arbitration went well yesterday. I was loveable and articulate, and the goons were loutish, brutish, and said stuff like, "She don't git it." an' stuff like that, and stuff. And the arbitrator was named Feld - which made me feel very A-list in the room. I think I'll prevail. But, I accept my Fate! whatever...

Hey, Jed - Jane told me you asked where on Hwy 2 I liv up here: Mt. Index Riversites, 4 miles o' bad road offa Hwy 2, just West of Index. A cabin on a stream in a lovely forest. But sometimes I am without water (bummer) for long periods of time, after a storm knocks my pump out. I learn to love the part of civilization where you turn the tap, and water just spills into a sink, and you can fiddle with a handle, and make it come out hot. That just knocks me out!!

As it is, I've been melting snow in 5 gallon buckets, and heating it up in a 2 gallon soup pot on the woodstove, to wash in. Oh, ain't she jes' the cutest little thang. Chop wood, carry water. As long as there's internet and TV, what care I?? Oh, happy day!. bye, p

Hollywood's attempts to deglamorize stars like Olivia DeHavilland (THE HEIRESS) and Grace Kelly (THE COUNTRY GIRL) usually just doesn't work (unless they put them in Halloween makeup like Elizabeth Taylor in THE BLUE BIRD) because their beauty just comes through. Grace was fine in THE COUNTRY GIRL, but I didn't think her work was powerful enough for the piece. I suspect she won that Oscar due to the fact that she had three hit films that year - REAR WINDOW and DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER being the others - and three studios rooting (and voting) for her: Paramount, Warners, and her home lot MGM.

The Los Angeles Opera has announced its 2004-2005 season, and Sondheim fans will be most interested.  As part of its regular repertory subscription season, they will be doing Sweeney Todd, with Bryn Terfel in the title role.  During July of 2004, they will mount A Little Night Music, starring Jeremy Irons and Juliet Stevenson, who starred together in the work in a run at the New York City Opera last year.

Sad about Uta Hagen. I saw her in a "reading" of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINAI WOOLF" a few years ago in LA. It was absolutely phenomenal. I've seen the play many times in full production and this so called reading blew them all away. I was about to consult my old playbills to see who else was in the cast - because I remember it was a great cast, but can't recall - and I realize I've - sigh - thrown away all my thousands of programs. I'm sure one of the DR's will know. The reading was also held in NY. (Just remembered - Roger Rees was George.)

I'm going to San Francisco for the night on Saturday and my wonderful landlord and landlady are going to Abiesit my dog (Abie). So my landlord came with me this morning on Abie's walk so I could show him where I take him. He gave me a little tour of the neighborhood as we walked. On the corner of my street is the Gidget house from the TV series. The same house was the home of Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio when they married. Two houses from us is Smiley Burnett's old home - now rebuilt.  A bit of Hollywood history.

Karma!  Gone, but undoubtedly not forgotten.  I can’t say that I followed the whole karma thing very closely.  For instance, I haven’t the slightest idea how much karma I had at the point it was removed, nor could I tell you if my total had gone up or down within the last few days.  I did enjoy, from time to time, awarding someone karma, just because of the joy that they seemed to receive from getting it.  I never knowingly took karma away from anyone, because to me it always seemed to say more about the person removing it, than it did about the person that had it taken away.  Finally, even without having a clue who the two culprits might be, I am still shocked by it.  Why would anyone go to a party and then slam the host behind his back?  Everyone who has ever been to a show business party, or even dreamed of attending one, knows that you never slam your host – until the next day.

But seriously, and what could be more serious than one of our crazy castings games?

While I never saw Miss Hagen as Martha, I did have the wonderful and magnificent Columbia LP of the complete play, and I'm here to tell you that even aurally she was wonderful and magnificent, as was Mr. Arthur Hill, Miss Melinda Dillon and Mr. George Grizzard.  I labored mightily to put it out on CD but alas the royalties were so huge that there was no way possible to do it.

Excellent casts for Fiddler - I would pay to see any of them more than the current revival - especially The Supremes as Tevye's daughters.

MattH...Don't have the Nickolas Nickleby on DVD, but on video and it looks just fine to me.   But then I'm a guy who grew up watching movies on TV sometimes with so much static and snow on the screen, it was like watching it through a blizzard.

I've just never been one of these techno junkies that can detect subtleties.  It has to be really crappy before I notice.   When the guy with thousands of dollars worth of stereo equipment would crank it up and ask me to hear the difference between it and my little stereo with its two small speakers, all I could hear was that it was louder.

I buy stuff for the content.  These gradations in transfers and colour and sound I can rarely detect.  As long as the story's good and the acting great and the picture is visible, what do I care...

Can't remember who mentioned Alfred Molina as Tevye, but he might surprise you.  He has considerably range.  I first encountered Molina in '82 when he came into audition for the small role of a cabbie in my film of HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.  A role he did not get, by the way.  But what I found amazing, however, was that at the time he was starring in the musical DESTRY in the West End.  I couldn't see why a West End star would come in for such a tiny part?  Unfortunately, I was unfamiliar with Destry, both as a musical and a film.  I knew of the film, just had never seen it...one of my failings and gaps in my movie education.  So I didn't go to see the musical.  Having now become familiar with both film and musical and Mr. Molina's work...and loving them all...I now wish I had.  It probably would  have been better than Windy City, which was the only musical I saw on that sojourn to London.

Oh that is so sad about Uta Hagen. I saw her in Montreal a few years ago.  I am drawing a blank on the name of the show. It's a play where Uta played an older teacher. And there is a younger woman, her student.

Btw, DR Jason: I dunno, I could have sworn they had broken up.  And have you lost any more mail since making the complaint? (of have you been shipping your mail to other places?)

DR Charles,

I, on the other hand, regret having seen Destry Rides Again. On a Saturday matinee outing way back, my dad gave us a choice between Destry (Andy Griffith) and Gypsy (Ethel Merman). Guess which one I lobbied for?

And, as I type, someone else is probably telling you that Alfred Molina will, indeed, be playing Tevye at the Minskoff Theatre.

DRMattH, I don't know why the time isn't right for a revival. Fiddler is timeless.

Tevye - TONY CURTIS
Golde - ZSAZSA GABOR
Tzeitel/Hodel/Chava - My daughter, Rachel (she can be any of the daughters)
Yente - MITZI GAYNOR (Why not?)
The Fiddler - EUGENE FODOR
Lazar Woolf - PETER LOREE
Motel - BELA LUGOSI (but we only see his back)

Fiddler was kind of like the male Hello, Dolly!  Just about every Jewish actor worth his salt (and a few who weren't) took over that role.  There were also a whole stack of Fiddler cast albums that came out in addition to the OBC (I think we had every one of them at the radio station where I used to work).

Maybe Ben Stiller can take over for Mollina when he leaves the show.

Given the history of the Minskoff, FIDDLER will most likely be a short run. Probably not as short as VAMPIRES, of course, or it's predicessor, THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, but I'm thinking it might run one season...perhaps two.  The Minskoff is such a huge space that unless it's a terribly good production, I don't know how they'd expect to fill it every night. There again, WICKED is managing it at the Gershwin, which is equally as large...

I have several different recordings of Candide, and over the last couple of weeks have listened to most of them.  What I noticed is that the newer the recording, the more "serious" the show became.  The original Barbara Cook recording and the 1974 Broadway cast seemed to have the most humor and really played it up.  The opera house version and the "final revised" version conducted by Lenny himself, seemed to have no humor in them whatsoever.  They were very good, but the performers seemed to be more interested in their "pretty voices" and not actually acting the humor of the piece (of which there is much).  I haven't listened to the new Broadway cast in quite a while and I don't remember how that was.

BK -- I also used to love the Uta Hagen / Arthur Hill recording of Virginia Woolf.  I can still remember sitting in an office in the Drama Department at Central Washington State University (just down the hall from Jed's grandfather's office) and listening to the entire recording.  When it was finished, I just sat there stunned.  I walked out of the building that day knowing, without a doubt, all of the reasons I wanted to be an actor.  I, also, made a promise to myself that someday I would play the role of George.  It still hasn't happened, yet, but I have faith that it will.  The show is just not done that often around here.  So, BK, if you ever decide to do a new recording of the show for a CD hint, hint, I hope you will, at least, let me read for the role of George for you.

Panni, I also saw Molina do ART...out here at the Dolittle/Huntington Hartford that Bruce and I were lamenting...it may have been one of the last legitimate shows done there (Alan Alda was also in it, I believe, and I can't remember the third actor and I'm too lazy to dig the programme out) and, yes, that speech he has was a tour de force.  Of course, Molina's range has been astonishing in film for years.  I remember him in PRICK UP YOUR EARS as Joe Orton's lover (the wonderful and weird Gary Oldman played Orton).

Of course, that speech in ART is almost a can't miss for any actor of substance.  Mark Williams (known to most as the stuttering actor in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and Ron Wheezley's father in Harry Potter) also killed doing it when I first saw the show in London.

I have several different recordings of Candide,

I saw a wonderful production of CANDIDE two seasons ago at the Central City Opera, a beautifully restored Victorian theater in a mining town in the hills west of Denver. Here are a couple of stories about that opera house you might enjoy, DRs.

WALTER HUSTON
In 1934, Robert Edmund Jones – the first director of the Central City Festival and a very important personage on Broadway – proposed to invite his brother-in-law Walter Huston and Huston’s wife, Nan Sunderland to perform Shakespeare’s OTHELLO in Central City that summer. At the time, Huston and Sunderland were grossing $30,000 a week on Broadway. Jones sent a telegram to Huston: "Dear Walter," it said, "I would like to invite you and Nan to come out to Central City, a little mining town in the mountains west of Denver, to do a production of Shakespeare’s OTHELLO for several weeks. I can offer you $1,000 for the season."
Walter Huston’s reply was, "Dear Bobby, your terms are entirely unsatisfactory. I accept."

MAE WEST
For the 1949 play season, the Central City Opera House Association had chosen DIAMOND LIL starring Mae West. Miss West was an aging sex goddess whose charm and hourglass figure belonged more to the Gay Nineties that the mid-twentieth century. Nevertheless, she still exuded the magnetism that had attracted men . . .
During her stay in Central City, Miss West boasted to the press, "I brought sex out of the back room. I gave it a shove with personality. I can order a cup of coffee on the stage, and the censors will be on my neck!"
Miss West made sure her arrival in Central City was noticed. She demanded that two white Cadillac limousines be placed at her disposal courtesy of the Association. She gave a birthday party for herself and invited only men, including Colorado’s governor. (He attended.) [Reportedly,] Mae put mirrors on the ceiling of Penrose #3 where she was staying during the festival.

Actor:  Those lips, those eyes, those hands...."

My mother has a box of Playbills from plays and shows she saw on Broadway in her younger days.  One of them is for Shakespeare's Othello, starring Paul Robeson, Jose Ferrer and Uta Hagen.  What a magnificent performance that must have been!

My mother loved Paul Robeson.  I believe she saw him perform when she lived in South Africa.  I’m very hazy about the location.  I do know, years ago, she smuggled in a recording of his.  I looked for the album when I was cleaning out at my Dad’s but couldn’t find it.   :(

DRMATTH - there was a two-part (or maybe three) adventure on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color about Dick Turpin the Highwayman...  I just remember that I thought the actor who played the leading role was great - and there was a wonderful theme song as well, but I never saw it again!  I want THAT show, MBARNUM - call Eisner and tell him!  I keep watching the schedule on the Disney channels, but haven't seen it broadcast.  Does anyone remember it...and who played Dick?

My mother loved Paul Robeson.  I believe she saw him perform when she lived in South Africa.  I’m very hazy about the location.  I do know, years ago, she smuggled in a recording of his.  I looked for the album when I was cleaning out at my Dad’s but couldn’t find it.   :(

I would loved to have seen Paul Robeson live. He is one of my favorite singers and I have several of his CDs. If you ever want a copy Jane, just holler (and send your address) and it will be yours!

DRJENNIFER:  Here is MY cheese enchillada recipe.  Get in the car, start the engine, drive to Taco Bell, tell the box you want "The Cheese Enchillada", drive to the second window, pay money, go home...eat.

LOL! That just gave me my giant guffaw of the day!

Ah you weren't paying attention yesterday. We have no taco bells in montreal, remember? :)

There are taco bells in Canada. Unfortuantely (or fortunately) Taco Bell didn't pass Quebec Health standards (low as they are) and aren't allowed into the province, so the rumour goes. Anyone still feel like mexican ;)

Thanks to all who translated my bubala question.

There is a story that goes with the recipe.  Years ago when we still lived in Southern California, and had no need to cook Mexican food, I worked with a gentleman with the last name of Rodriquez.  He said his mother made great enchiladas, very similar to the ones at our favorite restaurant in the Valley.  He stated his mother didn’t have a recipe as she cooked by sight and touch.  One day, determined to get the recipe, his wife watched the making of the enchilada’s and wrote everything down.  The original recipe called for unusual amounts, such as a particular brand of chili powder poured out to the red line or something like that.  I tucked the recipe away until we moved to New Jersey.  At that time there weren’t any Mexican restaurants at all.

Have you put your cursor on the recipe and right clicked your mouse? You can't highlight the words to copy it because it's a jpeg or image, not text, but you should be able to right click on the image and get a menu with the option to "Save Picture As..." It should be recognized as a jpeg so you don't have to do anything but decide where you want to save the picture and then click "Save".  It should then save a copy of the image/recipe in the place where you put it.

Post by: S. Woody White on January 15, 2004, 01:00:20 PM
Now, let's get to that post I threatened promised DR MBarnum: Uncle Woody's Reasons for Watching Fiddler On the Roof!  (The movie.)

The Director, Norman Jewison - was in the middle of the best decade of his career.  Consider, before Fiddler he'd helmed The Cincinnati Kid (1965), The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming ('66), In the Heat of the Night ('67), and Gaily, Gaily ('69).  All right, that last flick wasn't so hot, but he followed Fiddler with Jesus Christ, Superstar ('73) and Rollerball ('75).  What a run of films!  What a range of genres, and styles!  The man was in fantastic form, and Fiddler shows every bit of his skill.

The Story -  For something that is specifically rooted to a time, place, and culture, this story ends up having a universal appeal.  It's backdrop may be that of the Jews living in Czarist Russia, but it's really about the effects of change as Tevye deals with his daughters as each breaks from tradition in choosing a husband.  Betcha' didn't know the stage production was a hit in Japan!  Really!

The Storytelling -  Ever notice how a really good joke in a film is one that keeps getting retold, and each time it gets better?  That's what's going on here, but in reverse, because each time the same thing happens, the film becomes more serious, until the third time around there is genuine heartbreak.  Not only that, but as a viewer I felt a great concern for everyone involved.  So often, storytelling lags in the second act, but not here!

Topol as Tevye -  Thoroughly convincing in the role.  And he was only 36 when the film was released!  Personally, I think he deserved the Oscar, and he was nominated, but it was Hackman's year with The French Connection.

The cinematography and editing -  Oswald Morris won the Oscar for the cinematography, and the stories that it was shot through a ladie's stocking are apparently true.  Just as good, to my eyes, was the work by Antony Gibbs and Robert Lawrence in the editing, but they didn't even get nominated.

The Music -  To start with, it's one of the classic Broadway scores, by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick.  Of course you're already humming along; these songs are part of our lives by now.  But did you know that the Oscar here went to John Williams?  Yep, the same guy that wrote the theme to Lost in Space, and has written a few interesting ditties since.  (The Oscar was for Best Music Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score, a catagory that has since disappeared.  But it was John's first win!  He'd previously been nominated for The Reivers, Goodbye Mr. Chips and (drumroll please) Valley of the Dolls!)

And now, to be completely fair, there's a really good reason for not wanting to see Fiddler: the thing is too freakin' long!  It runs three hours!  It's like LOTR:TROTK, but with more roles for women and singing and dancing and a whole lot fewer swordfights.  Yeah, sure, it was released back when some films were relased with intermissions, but there are times when the thing just plain drags.  Sure, getting Issac Stern to play a solo on the cat guts was something of a coup, but he just goes on and on and on.  Take advantage of the moment, fix yourself a nice bowl of chicken soup while it plays in the background, you won't miss a thing and you'll feel so much better for it.

Jane, I can't recall the CD titles off hadn, but most of the songs are from the 1930s and 1940s, including OLD MAN RIVER, which always gives me the goose pimples when I hear hims sing it.

It is easy for us to forget that once upon a time in certain places....and even in other places today....that a production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF wouldn't even be permitted!
How true. I have errands to run, but I have to quickly tell you about the production of Fiddler I saw while visiting Hungary some years ago, when it was still under Communist rule. The pogrom scene, with the Russian soldiers brutally breaking up the wedding celebration, was understandably problematic at the time. The solution was to have the soldiers come in, throw a few things around in a kind of playful "boys will be boys" fashion and then join in the dancing in their friendly Russian way. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Hungary was and is a very anti-Semitic country. The actor playing Tevye, a well-known Hungarian stage star who was not Jewish, received daily hate mail and death threats for playing the role.

I don't mind that FIDDLER is as long as it is. It's beautifully and faithfully done, yet has the scope and grandeur of a film, altogether a near-perfect film version of the show. Sounds wonderful in surround and looks just great on enhanced for widescreen TVs.

One of the Disney Company's greatest achievements was their series of True Life Advenutures, a series of nature documentaries which won a bunch of Oscars. Disney released the feature length ones on videotape, and I bought all of those. The shorts, like "Water Birds" and "Nature's Half Acre," turn up occasionally as a bonus feature on one of the cartoons like THE RESCUERS. I'd like to get a boxed set of all of these.

When I taught middle school, I used these documentaries for indoor recess material when it was too rainy to go outside. The kids really seemed to like them, and I loved them.

Oh, wait a minute...that was Coupling.

I'm assuming the pajama party is Sunday night because of the Martin Luther King Day observance on Monday?

Pajamas?

Exactly what are these strange "pajamas" things folks keep referring to here?  And how does one party with them?

Are "pajamas" some kind of device one uses to imbibe Mary Jane?  And isn't that illegal in most states?

Quote from TCB  "Next time you get around to posting pictures for our viewing pleasure, could you post an enlarged version of your profile picture?  It looks like such a cute picture, but my elderly eyeballs can't make out many details."

Why TCB, thank you. I'm looking on the computer for that picture and all I can find at the moment is the small version. I'll have to look at real pictures to find the original.

In the meantime, since DR Ron has done it, here is a picture of me around 1965. I'll keep looking for Anthony and me at the pool table.

Uta Hagen was my employer for more than ten years, but I've no anecdotes about her.  I caught her on Broadway in a two-character play in which she had all the lines and Charles Nelson Reilly had none (!)

But my favorite Uta appearance is in Thomas Meehan's monologue, The Yma Dream, in which she gets introduced to Oona O'Neill, Ulu Grossbard and Yma Sumac in quick secession.  ("Uta, Oona; Oona, Uta.  Uta, Ulu; Ulu, Uta.  Uta, Yma; Yma, Uta.")

On paper, Fiddler on the Roof may be the greatest musical ever.  Glad BK liked my Supreme suggestion.

Oh, I have nothing against the show, and I don't even mind if they show ad after ad for it.  I'm just flummoxed as to how the last 3 or 4 episodes have all been the one to "begin the final countdown."  How many times can the fershluganah thing be begun? :)

Good afternoon all.
My printer has decided to go tits up, so I'm over at the school library printing some stuff out.  A pox on all printers, says I.
I also took advantage of the speedy connection to read today's notes.  My poor dialup sometimes has heart failure when I try to load page after page.
Fiddler casts...I doubt I could top some of the ones already posted, but perhaps I shall try later on.
Congrats to DR Jane.

Evening all!

I'm sorry I didn't say goodnight last night--I had a phone call and just didn't make it back.  It seems I pass for what is considered a computer guru in these parts.  Ok.  You can stop laughing now.

Bought the very last and I do mean last (or so the ticket lady told me) seat for Jesus Christ: Superstar at the Sunday matinee.  I really want to see if this turns out to be a quick draw Jesus like the first time I saw the show.

As for Disney films, I would very much like The Scarecrow of Romany (sp?) Marsh.  I LOVE that movie--I still remember part of the song:

On the Southern Coast of England,
There's a Legend people tell,
'bout the days of old when the Great Scarecrow
Would ride from the gates of Hell.
And laugh with a fiendish yell.

With his clothes all torn and tattered,
Through the black of night he's ride
from the marsh to coast like a demon ghost
(Ack Memory failure at this point)

And laugh till he split his side.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, the soldiers of the king feared his name
Scarecrow, scarecrow, the countryfolk all loved him just the same.

So the king told all his soldiers,
"Hang him hig or hang him low.
But never return till the day I learn
He's trapped in flames below"
Oh they’ll hang, the Great Scarecrow.

That's about all I remember.  Not bad considering I think I was a teen the last time I saw it.

Karma.  Ahh well.  I never could keep straight who I had given it to but I never knowingly took it from anyone either.

One last flight of the Karma fairy for old times sake?

Danise, don't you HAVE a book or two to read???

Yes, sir.  I do.

However, I had to give up on the PDA.  They've been sending us sideways/couch buses (which make me ill--I need to face forward) but with the bus moving back and forth and the text moving back and forth and my eyes moving forth and back, my stomach wanted to join the party and go up and down if you know what I mean.  Somethings in that mix had to remain still.  I chose the book and my stomach.

I just printed both books out and read the first 60 pages on the ride home tonight.

You have a very easy reading style but I have to tell you, I would know it was you even if you had used a pen name.

Well, that's my news.

I heard we have another female Goddess.  Yay!  But is it getting crowded at the top?

I started to watch Images with a selected scene commentary. However when you do this you only see the 25 minutes or so of the movie that Robert Altman commented on. I rather have no commentary that just selected scenes.

And did anyone ever read  'In Search of Unicorns' by Susannah York which plays a part in the film Images?

Now I would love to see 3 Women which he made a few years later.

Is it true that Yma Sumac was really an ex-housewife named Amy Camus?
That's one story.  It was started by some musicians, and Walter Winchell wrote it up in one of his gossip columns.  But I seriously doubt it.  For one thing, her four and a half octave range would have made such a ruse unnecessary.  Why bother with a made-up history when the talent alone would have made her a big sell?  Second, I don't think she was known for singing anything other than Peruvian stuff.  Wouldn't an ex-housewife be singing other things?  Like "Old Man River" and "Glitter And Be Gay," in a medley?

By the way, she's apparently still around, living in Los Angeles somewhere.

The SONG OF THE SOUTH DVD I have was released by Disney in the Phillipines.  It is uncut, in English and plays on USA DVDs.  There are some text extras, but not all the extras that are on most other Disney DVDs.  I can't find the address, but look in the classified ads in publications like "Comic Buyers Guide" and other magazines devoted to comics and animation.

It's a shame that Eisner refuses to release it in the USA, but until he does this is a damn good substitute.

DG (Dear Goddess) Jane - Yes, things have changed in Hungary. The Russians no longer run the show - including Fiddler. It's still (perhaps even more so) an anti-Semitic country.

Speaking of Song of the South, tvguide.com has a feature called FlickChick (http://www.tvguide.com/movies/flickchick/) and this week (it's new every Thursday) she answered this question:

Question: Could you please tell me what happened to Bobby Driscoll and how and when he died? I know this occurred at a young age, but I don't know the details. Also, I used to go to school with a young actress named Luana Patten, who worked for Walt Disney and worked with Driscoll in Song of the South and So Dear to My Heart. Could you tell me what happened to her and where she's living today? — Lynn

Flickchick: Born on March 3, 1937, Bobby Driscoll was barely 31 when he died in New York City on March 30, 1968. Children found his body in an abandoned tenement building on East 10th Street between Avenues B & C; because no one identified the body, Driscoll was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave on Hart Island. A fingerprint check in 1969 finally put a name to the corpse. The cause of death was heart attack, but his long history of alcohol and drug abuse was a contributing factor. Driscoll, who supplied the voice of Peter Pan in Disney's 1953 animated version of the classic children's story, was a hugely popular child star who received a special Oscar in 1949 for his role in the noir thriller The Window (1949). He was 12 when he went home with the miniature statuette that proclaimed him "the outstanding juvenile actor of 1949." A cute child who was widely praised for his professionalism and pleasant personality, Driscoll matured into an awkward adolescent and had difficulty finding work. His 1956 marriage produced three children, but ended in divorce. The embittered Driscoll was widely quoted as saying that he was "carried [into Hollywood] on a velvet pillow and dumped into a garbage can."

Sadly, actress Luana Patten is also deceased; she succumbed to respiratory failure in 1996 at the age of 57. Patten was living in Long Beach, Calif., where she was born and raised. Patten made her movie debut in Song of the South (1946), had a brief but successful career as a child actress, then took a break from movies and returned as a teenager. She married actor John Smith, whose credits included a string of Western movies and the TV series Cimarron City and Laramie, in 1960 and cut back on acting, retiring from the business not long after their union ended in 1964.

I was certainly not disappointed and I was certainly not aware that Sam and Froddo were crying too much! I was amazed at the inventiveness of the Battle scenes - they did not see like LOTR TT revisited.  I was also pleased to see the endings as I remember them. It would have been too easy for go for just one. The very first scene was a total surprise - a great way to start. (I thought I was about to see "A River Runs thought It").

I agree with you and was in awe of the Battle scenes.  I thought the movie was great and definitely worth the wait.  It has been over thirty years since Keith and I read the trilogy and we did not remember the same ending.  For us the book ended a bit sooner.    Now I want to reread the books, or at least the ending, and cannot find our copies.  I think our son has them. :-\

Actually, Jane, except for the ships sailing to the Grey Havens, we missed a big chunk of the last part of the book.  There was a chapter called "The Scourging of the Shire" in which the Hobbits return to Hobbiton and find it overrun with all sorts of disreputable characters and they have to clean everything up.  I'm hoping against hope that Jackson filmed some of that for the expanded release.

It's simply wanting the books filmed as completely as possible, Jay.

TROTK is a very long movie.  It's an even longer book.  I think Charles Pogue's argument about the battles being one too many has merit when you consider how long one sits and watches in a theater full of people who don't know the book...but I'll not naysay Jackson's determination to present as much of Tolkien's story with as much faithfulness as possible.  The expanded versions of the first two films are far superior to the theatrical versions, and Jackson had the expanded versions prepared the same way he prepared for theatrical release.

I was emotionally drained for days after TROTK.  It still moves me when I think of certain scenes.

Sean Astin is a-m-a-z-i-n-g and he'll probably never be properly credited for what he brought to the third film -- certainly not by his peers, of which there are few who have ever turned in a performance like Astin's.

Greetings from New York City again!

It's cold here.

Nice day of checking out a few shops on Fifth Avenue - and one store actually let me return something that I had bought back in August, but had exchanged for the same item in September since it didn't work properly, then when I got it home I found out the new one didn't work properly either... So, after some discussions with two very friendly salespeople, they allowed me to return the item and get store credit!  -For something I bought back in August!!  Now that's service!!! -Thank You, Takashimaya!  domo arigato gozaimasu

Well, then came the first walk back to the hotel in the cold.  The sun had started to set, and once we crossed 9th Avenue, it was like we had entered a whole new world - a whole new COLDER world.  The wind picked up, the temp dropped, and snow was blowing off all the rooftops and awnings.  But we made it back safe and sound.

It's cold here in NYC right now.

After an hour of defrosting - and eating some more yummy treats from Amy's Breads (as well as some very good hot chocolate (made with whole milk, thank you very much)), we headed over Ollie's Noodles for some dinner.  Good dinner.  And the walk over wasn't too bad.

It is cold here in New York right now.

After dinner, we had some time to kill, so we headed over to Toys 'R' Us for some pre-show browsing - and to stay warm.  And, I ended up running into a few friends who were also just trying to stay someplace warm. ;)  Then it was over to theatre.

The walk over wasn't too bad, but I could definitely tell that the temp had dropped a few more points.

-Did I mention that it's cold here in NYC?

Well... All I will say about AVENUE Q is... ;D  What a wonderful show.  Very tuneful, great cast, great technical elements, and the puppets and puppeteers are wonderful.  Oh, and the show is VERY funny too, and touching at times too.  It's very real.  Steve and I - and the rest of the audience - were laughing out loud many a time throughout the evening.  *And I have to give the writers and actors some credit for making sure not too many jokes got lost due to people still laughing at a previous joke.  Oh, and I didn't realize that an actress who I worked with in DC last year during CARMEN JONES was in this production, Natalie Belcon.  She plays Gary Coleman. ;)  -And Barret Foa was on for John Tartaglia tonight - wonderful job, and no "sense" of him being the understudy - a true performance.  -And I believe he had family and friends in the audience tonight as well. -Oh, and he's very cute too.

-And the celebrity sighting for the day took place at the Golden Theatre - Elijah Wood was also enjoying the show tonight.  I thought I had seen him, but had some doubts when no one else was noticing/ paying attention to him.  But on the way out afterwards, people started "oohing" and "aahing" - it was him.  And as we were waiting at the stage door, my "suspicions" were confirmed.

Oh, it's cold here in NYC.  In fact, it may even be "Montreal Cold".  -That was for you DCRs - Dear Canadian Readers. ;)

Now... The walk back to the hotel this time was actually a little painful.  The temp had dropped even more, the wind picked up here and there...  Steve and I had to stop once since our eyes and foreheads were getting "chilled" due to out metal eyeglass frames!  We also slowed our pace down in order to reduce our own wind chill.  Thankfully, the hotel room is nice and warm - and I made sure to buy some extra treats earlier for a post-show snack.

But, seriously, it is cold out there right now - and they may even set a new record low tonight here in NYC.  My thoughts are with everyone who may have to brave the cold tonight - and I hope that DR Jason does not have to wait too long for his subway trains tonight after he gets done at the Met.

Well, I'm gonna do some skimming of today's notes...

But before I go:

Fiddler - Drew Carey

Oh, I forgot to mention, it's cold here in NYC.

BUT - We are having a grand time.  A truly grand time.  -And the temps will be warming up as the weekend progresses!  We're going to be breaking the 20 degree mark! :)

Well, I have liked some of Robert Altman's films and others I liked parts of more than the whole. I will also readily admit that there are quite a few I've never seen. When I see them coming up on one of the premium channels, I try to remind myself to watch it, but I usually forget. I guess I assume I'll catch up with them eventually, and that's just not true. I would most like to see SHORT CUTS which got lots of very positive reactions from folks I know. I've never managed to catch it. One day . . . .

He didn't.

What you see in FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING is the only footage Jackson shot of "The Scourging of the Shire."

Every time that I've had marzipan was like eating gritty, cherry-flavored paste.  I didn't enjoy it.  I suppose that I'll try it again, sometime, but I only if someone else has it and offers me some.  I won't buy any myself...unlike another try at Taco Del Mar's fish taco.  I will try that again.

OK, before I retire (I know, it's kind of late. I had serious homework to do), I have two questions that may be stupid, but I want the answers anyway.

1) Can someone explain "house seats" to me? How are they different from any other seats?!

2) What the HELL is Marzipan? The only reason I've ever even heard that word is because of homestarrunner.com. Homestar's friend is named Marzipan.

Conan O'Brien always makes me laugh. I love reliable TV.

I just pulled this from the Food Network site:

Marzipan

Definition: [MAHR-zih-pan] A sweet, pliable mixture of almond paste, sugar and sometimes unbeaten egg whites. It's often tinted with food coloring and molded into a variety of forms including fruits, animals and holiday shapes. Some fancy commercial marzipan fruit is colored so convincingly that it can almost be mistaken for the real thing. Marzipan is also rolled into thin sheets and used either to cover cakes or to cut into strips to form ribbons, bows and a variety of other shapes. Marzipan is available in most supermarkets, packaged in cans or plastic-wrapped logs.

Tomovoz scores virtual karma for getting there first.
Title: Re:THE METAPHYSICAL ME
Post by: Panni on January 15, 2004, 10:47:18 PM
2) What the HELL is Marzipan?
From Google:
The best marzipan recipes use a two to one ratio of almonds and sugar. The old masters don't consider a mix that contains more than half sugar as true marzipan. A trick used to make really great marzipan is to use 1 bitter almond to every 100 good almonds in the almond mix. If you've ever tasted a bitter almond, you understand how only one can have a serious effect. The smallest taste is an extremely gross experience you won't soon forget. A bitter almond uniquely alters the recipe and is always used in the best almond paste used in marzipan. One note about bitter almonds: do not be eat them in large amounts because they contain to trace amounts of cyanide.
....According to the last sentence I should be dead now.

What! No-one wants to explain "house seats". In Oz they are very good seats not on sale to the general public unless not taken up by friends of producers, cast members etc at a good price (or free). Usually about four row back and centre as a rule.

Title: Re:THE METAPHYSICAL ME

I like Halvah.  House seats for Broadway shows are held by actors, the director, the choreographer, the producers, the conductor and I'm sure others.  They must reserve the use of them forty-eight hours or the box-office lets them go, which is frequently why you can walk up to the box-office on the day of a show (around five pm) and get great seats.  If all the house seats are gone, they do keep an emergency pair until just hours before curtain for the producer.  For example, I sat in Mr. Macintosh's seats for Miss Saigon when I saw it, thanks to Mr. Maltby.

The last of my (latest) eBay purchases have arrived (and I hope they're worth it):  CDs of Anything Goes "Featuring Members Of The Original London & Broadway Casts" with Jeanne Aubert on the first eight tracks and The Merm on the rest (in the "Bonus Tracks" section) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Carol Channing and Yvonne Adair.  Both CDs are part of "The Broadway Musicals Series" on Prism Leisure from England (although I got them from someone in Oregon).  The various Anything Goes tracks were recorded between 1934 and 1939.  Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was recorded in 1949.

I've listened to the first few tracks of Blondes and so far so good.  I don't know what to expect.  I'm sure my standards are low enough that I will be satisfied with them.  So far I am.  The transaction went well and they arrived quickly...good enough for me.

I also received a region 2 DVD of a live Martine McCutcheon concert.  She was Eliza in the latest London revival of My Fair Lady.  So those are the things that I'll have in my CD player and DVD player tomorrow. :D
