I will be E&T most of the day: an orchestra readthrough for Encores! and then some time in Toyland.

I watched two more CSI episode this morning. One of them involved something that actually happened the actress Eva LaRue's sister which was incorporated into the episode. Obviously, LaRue provided the commentary along with the writer of the episode, so that was fairly interesting to watch and listen to.

The other involved a terrorist plot to blow up the nuclear station in Miami. This came out of nowhere since the majority of the episode seemed to be about a murder at a charity auction.

Having watched BREATHLESS last week, I was stuck immediately at how many techniques in the film have been stolen, incorporated, etc. by other filmmakers in the years since. So, it's definitely influential.

CITIZEN KANE, of course, used techniques that caught on with filmmakers afterwards.

As for me personally, the first film I ever saw as a kid that knocked my socks off and made me realize that films could be art as well as entertainment was GIGI. I came out of that movie with all that lovely music and all those beautiful costumes and that gorgeous Paris photography and knew that movies were about more than just fun. I'm not sure I ever watched movies the same way after GIGI.

Today I have the last ten minutes or so of MY NAME IS EARL to watch. Then, it's back to CSI: MIAMI. I'd like to get through disc 3 today and hopefully into disc 4 before I go to bed. There are no bonus features on disc 3, so it should go a bit more smoothly.

Disc 2 actually had an interesting bonus feature covering the make-up department on the show and how they work with the special effects photography department in making those world famous CSI-internal shots. I really enjoyed watching these professionals talking about their work with such pride.

DR td, I should have RATATOUILLE in hand on Monday, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm also getting that DVD of Pixar short subjects which is also to be released on November 6.

BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ keeps getting pushed back on the viewing list, but it doesn't come out until November 13, so there still seems to be time to get to it late next week.
Title: Re:BREATHLESS
Post by: td on October 27, 2007, 07:18:36 AM
From personal experience, I would say that the two films which changed the way I looked at movies were THE SOUND OF MUSIC and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.  To me, both films, on a huge screen, essentially took me into the world of their tales with brilliant photography, editing and use of sound.  LAWRENCE also showed me how little actual dialogue is required to make a meaningful motion picture.
Though not and essential, Francis Ford Coppola's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA demonstrated the joy of film-making through its in-camera technique.
Hitchcock films which made me see movies differently, REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO and PSYCHO.  With PSYCHO, I would have loved to have been in the theaters when it first opened.  I still find PSYCHO unsettling for those few silent moments following Marian's fatal shower for once the supposed protagonist is gone, until Norman starts the clean-up, we (as an audience) really don't have a character to give our allegiance to.
CITIZEN KANE, of course, should go without saying.

Last night, on the recommendation of my Sam Morgan's boss, I watched TRANSFORMERS.  He was right on many counts:  it's definitely a show off your system disc with awesome sound and visuals.  I truly rattled the walls for a couple of hours.  If in the proper frame of mind, TRANSFORMERS is a fun, wild ride, though definitely worthy of its PG-13 rating - the parental discussion regarding Sam's (Shia LaBouef) "happy time" could have easily been cut making TRANSFORMERS a better movie for youngsters.

Fresman year in college:the Kimball cinemauditorium showed 'art' films on Wedneday; Over the course of the year, I remember seeing Seventh Seal, Virgin Spring, 81/2,La Dolce Vita, the extraordinary L'Aventurra, Agnes Varda's(I think) Le Bonheur,The Shop on Main Street and of course Bonnie and Clyde was at the 'regular' theater; Prior to this I had only seen USA and UK films. The Man from Rio I saw in a dubbed print and of course Hercules Unchained was also dubbed. But that fresman 'course was an eye opener-I've avoided seeing L'Aventurra a second time, because I'm afraid it won't live up to my memory of it(Ditto Sansho the Bailiff)

I just can't summon up any interest in TRANSFORMERS. When it finally appears next year on HBO/Showtime/Starz, I'm sure I'll watch it just to be "in the know," but it just doesn't sound like my kind of movie (apart from being a reference home theater disc.)

Of course, there's another episode of TORCHWOOD coming on tonight that I already have my DVR set to record. I've liked watching it back at 10 so I can zoom through coimmercials and finish the show more quickly.

That's one of the joys of watching these TV box sets, too. The story gets presented in a piece instead of piecemeal.

I took some master's degree courses on film history that introduced me to a lot of the movies you mentioned here. We didn't have any theater in my small hometown that ever showed foreign films, not even notorious ones like LA DOLCE VITA, so I didn't get to see foreign movies until I took that class.

Later, when I moved to a city to live, there were revival and art theaters that would play some of the more famous (or infamous ones) so I started catching up.

But I'd have to say that the home video revolution starting with VHS is where my foreign film education started taking serious dimensions, and with the advent of the Criterion collection on laser and now DVD, the fascinating world of foreign cinema is now available for anyone with an interest.

My horizons and world view have been SO enriched during this year watching and writing about the really wide collection of films that Criterion presents on DVD.

Ken and Ric Burns' THE CIVIL WAR, like it or not, influences documentary makers even now, because it was so successful that people realized that a documentary could reach and be enjoyed by the general public. It's a mixed blessing, because for years after it aired, filmmakers either intentionally copied his style, or were forced to do cheap imitations.

Ken was able to make history, covering times when there is very little visual documentation, come alive for people, and supplements his work with a lot of outreach.
(Currently, for THE WAR, he's put together kits to teach people how to interview their own relatives about their memories of WWII.)

Although I'm more of a fan of Ric's films, I think Ken, along with D.A. Pennebaker, Frederick Wiseman, Barbara Kopple and yes, Michael Moore, have had a huge influence on documentary filmmakers.

A HARD DAYS' NIGHT was also so influential, especially Richard Lester's directing style, and the songs could be considered the first "music videos".

A TRIP TO THE MOON---besides having amazing visual effects for the turn of the century, it also could be considered the first science fiction film. I am still in awe of what they accomplished back then!
Title: Re:BREATHLESS

SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE---it proved that a low-budget indie could become a blockbuster and made more people willing to invest in films without big names or big special effects, essentially opening the way for more indie films to be made. It only took a few years before the major studios were creating smaller companies that "looked" like indies but had major studio backing. They were trying to look cool, and at the same time, paying filmmakers indie wages, even though the films were being distributed by a huge company. (There was a big protest about this when I was at Sundance in '91.)

Of course, it also paved the way for a lot of crap, but SODERBERG'S verité-style of directing was, and still is, imitated by many filmmakers and tv shows as well. (Even THE CLOSER!)

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And, yes, I'm back from the gym... And, man, oh man, did I have a good workout this morning!

Since today is my last workout day for the week, and since I don't have anything lined up for today - and since the gym was practically empty on a Saturday morning, I really took my time.  I did a brief cardio warm-up followed by some stretching.  Alas, my stretching session was a bit self-frustrating - it still amazes me just how tight the muscles in my legs are.  -Of course, making a living sitting down at the piano for the past 20 years or so will do that to you.  I have been stretching everyday for the past two weeks, and I just have to keep in mind that it has to go "little by little" rather than by "leaps and bounds" in regards to my flexibility (especially at this stage in the game).  Breathe!

Then came the abs circuit (lower, upper, obliques and back).  Then it was "strength test" time.  The gym has one of those online training programs which is customized according to what equipment is available at your gym location - and to you and your body, of course.  The strength test calls for really testing the upper limits of your strength just to get a measure of where you currently are so that your workouts can be planned accordingly.  Well, I have to say that I really surprised myself.  I just went ahead and adjusted the weight stacks a few pins higher than what I've been using the past two weeks, and, lo and behold, I made it through the weight circuit unscathed completing full sets of the exercises to "muscle failure" (a term that still sounds "bad" to me, but is apparently "good"). And feeling pretty pumped!

Then came some more stretching before heading back home.

WHEW!

:)

I'm up, I'm up.

For me, the Hitchcock films were pure entertainments, and I didn't realize until much later how influential they were.  So, whilst I enjoyed them and loved them and revered them, they did not make me see movies differently.  Here are some that I saw as a youngster that did (all on their first release):

Psycho (yes, a Hitchcock film, but one that had sport with all the rules - after Psycho, I trusted no film to play by the rules.  In terms of structure and style, one of the most imitated films ever made).

Sundays and Cybele - I'd never seen a film quite like it - weird, poetic, with images so beautiful and stark and with a plot so peculiar that it introduced me to a whole new style of cinema.

The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg - really a one-off film that created its own unique world in a way that hadn't been done before - and succeed in doing so by not only being a marvelous film, but by being a huge hit.

A Hard Day's Night - again, so influential, style-wise, that it's been copied by so many people for so many years that it's hard to watch it and understand just how radical it was.

Bonnie and Clyde - again, its style and way of presenting its "heroes" was completely unique for the time, and its ending influenced many filmmakers.

Good Afternoon dear friends!

I slept until 8:30am today. Quite a feat. We didn't go to bed until about 1am though. We went out last night. I left work after putting in a full day (and performing another save the department's ass trick) and we went to a friend's for dinner. We haven't seen Brett in months so it was very nice to catch up. He made cassoulet and mini quiches. There was also a wonderful hearty country bread and fresh butter. Mmm, mmm, mmm! We then had carrot cake for dessert because one of the other guests celebrated his birthday last night. During dinner we watch "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" I've only seen it a few times before. It was fun and Snoopy's turn at the piano is great.

After dinner and dessert we settled in for our almost Halloween Fright Night movie. We saw Straight-Jacket with Miss Joan Crawford. I had never seen it. I've heard about it but never watched it. What a hoot. Poor Joan. We had a very good time watching and visiting.

I am not sure if I know from the TOD.

So I will just jump back onto the couch and finish up the Bollywood movie I began last night....DEH SHIVA BAR MOHE (2002), a very, very low budget, yet strangly entertaining, Punjabi film starring the popular pop singer Sukhjinder Shera along with Dara Singh, Deep Dhillon, and Sameep Kang.

I'd seen "Snow White" when I was quite young but it was "Lady & The Tramp" that really inroduced me to the joy of animated movies.

Mention of "Spirited Away" by DR François - and some time later by BK led me Animation on another level.

Catherine? Hmm...It's actually Boo Boo Ann.

They are both doing fine today. They were very happy to see Adam arrive last night and enjoyed being with us in the livingroom as we watched Legally Blonde.  Callie really came to life around Adam, so it was good medicine for her.

They both seem pretty good today.  I think the antibiotics are really helping Callie.

The US (except for the primitives in Arizona) delay the fall back until next week - (except, of course for those folks who coped with the earlier change in the spring by manually fiddling with their computer clocks, (instead of upgrading their software, and will now be confronted with a computer system clock that resets a week early!).

Maybe in California, but not here.  Washington State's Liquor Control Board is very strict about enforcing any attempt at increasing drinking hours due to the change in Daylight Savings Time.

The only exception to the 2:00 a.m. rule is New Year's Eve (until 3:00) and they may have even abolished that rule.

Thank you all for the headache vibes.  The reading was interesting, with quite a turnout.  The "editor" when she met me thanked me for going through the score and said "I'm the scholar who's preparing this edition." I couldn't tell if she was marking territories or just letting me know that she has a PhD and uses "Doctor" before her name in all conversation.  I wanted to retort with "you may be a scholar but you sure ain't no musician," but I behaved.  After a while the headache came back as I listened to her acting informed about the crap I had to correct to the orchestra and folk there. She knows a lot about the history of the show, but she knows nothing about right notes, wrong notes, Broadway  band parts vs touring parts, cued notes or the history of how old the parts shes working from may even be.

I had fun with several friends who were there - Robert Kimball and his lovely wife, Bruce Pomahac of Rodgers & Hammerstein, conductor Rob Berman, and the mighty Josh who makes me laugh.  It was great to see Red Press, who's getting a special Tony Award on Tuesday.

I didn't end up watching it last night.  But I did watch it today.  I wasn't that interested in the first half of the show.  The past few weeks i've been riveted in my seat. But i sort of found the beginning of last night's show off.

I agree with DR MattH. It's a bit much when the lead character is in peril. Because it's obvious nothing is going to happen to her. So it's not really that interesting.

And i was sort of amazed that melinda would go into that tunnel alone, especially without telling anyone.

I did enjoy the stuff with her dad and her brother. Although i was sort of stunned when her brother intentionally locked her in that tunnel. I mean i knew he was bad. But i didn't think he would actually set out to kill her.

Looks look it could get interesting in the next few weeks.

I love the insecurity of many people with Phds.  They are still not wise enough to distinguish between knowledge and wisdom. The knowledge they have is often limited too!. That they expect to be addressed as "Doctor" is their need for recognition.  They have fallen into the sad trap of becoming their qualification at the cost of their real "self".

It really is an extension of becoming our occupation instead of ourselves.
"Just A Housewife" came to mind.

That social question "what do you do for a living" puts us into little boxes.
I was quite proud to belong to my profession but I hope I was far more than a teacher.

When DH Richard was working on his doctorate, we attended some academic dinner function and shared a table with many of his classmates.  The females treated me like his "little wifey" and were oh-so-arrogant.  At the time, I had a librarian job at the same university that carried an academic rank.  So, when it came time to introduce guests, Richard really laid it on thick, introducing me as Director of the Middletown Campus Library and associate professor, a rank that would take his classmates years to attain through the promotion and tenure process, assuming they found full-time professorships at all.

I did always want to get my own Ph.D., so that when someone on the phone asked for Dr. Palmer, I could ask if they meant Mr. Dr. Palmer or Mrs. Dr. Palmer.  However, having seen too many doctorates left unfinished, I decided that I'd rather never start, than start and not finish.

That is very interesting.  Sometimes vets can be excited to do a procedure that is interesting to them.  I sadly fell into this trap once.

One of the reasons I feel very confident with Sherlock’s orthopedist, though surgery on Sherlock would be an interesting and educational procedure, the doctor will not operate when everything is going so well.

In the US, retired (or reserve) officers retain their rank, and the use of their still proper military title is considered a common courtesy - almost always used for "general" officers, and often for those of field grade. We also extend the use of titles to no-longer active folks in government service (Senator, Judge, Ambassador, etc.).

I just remembered Bryan’s fist Halloween in New Jersey.  He was almost three and the young girl across the street offered to take him out for me when it got dark.  I had already taken him out with Craig earlier in the day, along with my other friends who were pushing baby carriages.

She took him for awhile and then back to her house and was going to drop him off before leaving with her brother and the siblings next door.  I was watching out my window as the group of children went down the street with Bryan in tow.  Three hours late, they finally retuned carrying one exhausted little boy home.  He made it to the second step inside before completely crashing.

These kids were all great so I never mentioned my concerns, and how could I complain they found Bryan so irresistible they couldn’t leave him behind.   ;D

I had a lovely dinner with the currently errant and truant DR Jason earlier.  He's doing well, and, yes, he's currently busy(!).  He starts rehearsals on Monday for his tour of A Christmas Carol, and then in two weeks time he starts performances.   He does have some "local" shows on his itinerary, and once he finds out whether or not the general public is invited to them - a lot of them are for schools - he'll report in just in case any DRs want to try and see him in his plethora of roles.  -He has 11 costume changes in a 60 minute show!

In any case, it was great catching up with him.  We hadn't see each other in about two weeks.  -And he happened to notice a new waiter at the Renaissance Diner, a "beautiful" new waiter. ;)

I had a lovely dinner with the currently errant and truant DR Jason earlier.  He's doing well, and, yes, he's currently busy(!).  ..  -He has 11 costume changes in a 60 minute show!

Was his ability to get out of his trousers with speed a factor in his casting :)

The Cuisipro© Peanut Butter and Jelly Spreader

Quote

Use this all-in-one tool to scoop and spread peanut butter and jelly. Eliminates the risk of peanut butter and jelly mixing in jars. Silicone ends allow for easy spreading. Can also be used for butter, cream cheese, mayonnaise and mustard.

-And since our current subletter is an admitted PB&J Sandwich fanatic, well... :)

i like that jose.  i have tried using both sides of one knife, but it just isn't the same.  that would come in handy for when i eat peanut butter out of the jar, one knife scoop usually isn't enough.  i'll keep an eye out for one.

And only $8.00 to boot!

-However, the one "possible" design flaw is that if you end up laying it down on the counter after your PB&J'd your bread, then you end up getting PB&J on the counter.  I would have taken a "hint" from the OXO GoodGrips folks, and made it so that the ends of the spreader arc up.  Of course, if you end up placing it on the counter "upside down", well...  But I guess there's always balancing it on the rim of the jars or plate.  :)

Edi, last night you were talking about what to do for the parent's 60th Anniversary.  You talked about the Atlanta tour, but decided Mom would not be up for it.  Why not film all those places that you would have driven them, EDIT it, put on a bit of commentary by the two of you, and use the music of 1947 as the background music.  Then they could watch the DVD anytime they wanted.

TCB---you're hired as producer!

What a great idea! Unfortunately, we don't know most of the places they would want to see, and it might be hard for them to describe the places but they might recognize them if we drove around. We will give them the presents we have and then make the offer, and it could be at their whim, pretty much, on a day when Greg's mom feels good.

I love the insecurity of many people with Phds.

A friend of mine had a father with a very successful tree surgeon business. They were members of a "fancy schmancy" country club. When the wives would start bragging about their husband "the doctor",  his mom would inevitably bring up her husband, "the surgeon".

This friend is one of the funniest people I know, so he obviously inherited some of it!

Watching the interesting and long 1993 documentary on Breathless.

As I mentioned last week, I found it the best bonus in the set. I found it fascinating going back to the locations, especially the hotel and the room used in the filming which was torn down right after he was there. And Godard's attitude was so funny.

I remember Marlene Dietrich hated interviewers that only wanted to talk about her Von Sternberg films and would walk out if that's what the interviewers started talking about. I guess Godard is just tired of talking about that movie after decades of interviews.

I would be happy to get my masters or perhaps two. I want to combine a communicaton / history one with perhaps a MLS down the road.  I also get a bit annoyed as 'being referred to as DBF's little woman". He did that once and told he may have a phd but that dont mean a hill of beans when there is no respect. Since then he has never referred to me again as his 'little woman'. Nor has one of his colleagues.

The superintendent of the school district where I worked often berated me for not going for my Ph. D. (I had my Master's already.) What on earth would I want with one, I kept asking him? I had no desire to be s superintendent or to teach in college or university. So why do all that extra work when I was perfectly happy teaching English in junior high school. Yes, my pay would have increased a few thousand dollars a year, but again, I just couldn't see any other reason for going for it. So I didn't.

Today, I went to my sister's house to finish assembling her kitchen counter/island.  There were two little drawers that still needed to be put in and I had to take off the whole three-inch thick counter top to add the support/middle section of the two drawers. :P Now, it is FINALLY done!  After that, I went to work for a few hours and then ate dinner (KFC).  When I got home, I started copying the Legally Blonde DVD and have gotten them all done!  Now, I just need to copy the backstage clips disc and it's all done!  I'll be able to mail them out Monday or Tuesday (depending on when I can get to the post office. :)

As I was copying the discs, I was able to put some of the ointment/cream on my cat's paw, but I didn't have to put the collar on her...I held her in my lap and prevented her from licking it off as I watched the last two episodes of "Dirty Sexy Money" and then a show (edited for content) that I had recorded on my DVR from Logo (originally unedited on Showtime from 2000) called "Common Ground (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212889/)."  According to the blurb, "Three tales (by Paula Vogel, Terrence McNally and Harvey Fierstein) about changing attitudes toward homosexuality over three generations in a New England town."  In it, were Eric Stoltz (he has a small part in it but otherwise, he was the narrator), Margo Kidder, Brittany Murphy, Jason Priestley, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Edward Asner, Steven Weber and others.  It was quite good, but it's not available on VHS or DVD (at least, according to Amazon.com).  My DVR only recorded exactly 120 minutes and the very end of it was cut off. :( Anyone else see this?
