I went to rehearsal last night for a couple of hours before I realized that I really didn't need to be there at all. :-\ They were working on zombie interaction with a fight choreographer and I have one scene where I shoot some zombies, but that's all I do.  I don't otherwise interact with them, so I didn't need to be there...so I left...with permission from the director.

I was conversing with the youngest of our regular cart-wranglers at work (regular meaning not still in high school and therefor working during the daytime), a fellow named Justin who thinks he knows a lot about movies.  Ratatouille had just been released on DVD, and we had it on sale, but Justin didn't think the movie was all that great.

So I asked him what his favorite CGI animated films were.  "The live-action Transformers," he offered.  "And the live action Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer, that was cool."

The line between what is animated and what isn't is blurring.  And some of the audience is pretty well blurred, too.   :-\

Good morning, all!  The Big Meeting is at 4:30, attorney and two brothers.  M has told Randy he's going to behave this week, whatever that means.  I want to chill out and remain calm all day because I don't want this going to pieces this afternoon.  I'll be glad to see the taxes and this round of nonsense accomplished.

This morning, a stop to the estate bank and then back here for a day of work on the Men's Chorus december concert and Ashley's orchestrations.

If in Dayton you paid more than $172/week you didn't shop wisely.

Best rates for Hertz are from thier HLE (Hertz Local Edition) offices, NOT the airport or major hotels.

To shop competition, I use Expedia.com (They quoted lots of choices for &172/week)

Enterprise/Budget and Hertz HLE offered  the same price.

My favorite dances of the night were Helio's second dance, and mel's second dance.

I was sort of disappointed with jennie, and cameron and especially marie. But i think at times edyta's (cameron's partner) choreography can be weak. IN turn i think julianne is an unbelievable choreographer, which i think helps a lot!

I think marie will go. But it wouldn't surprise me to see jennie or cameron go either.

I really liked last night's show. I love it when they show us what happened in the last few months (before the premiere in september).

I was especially interested in finding out what happened to peter. And the parts with adam were also interesting.

It sort of confused me that the haitian was with elle and bob.  But i was glad he tried to help peter.

I was very surprised at what happened to DL (since i had assumed he had died 4 months ago). I loved watching him as a firefighter. And the odd thing is i never cared for him. But i actually started liking him!

And i don't like the brother/sister but the stuff at the wedding actually held my attention.

no hiro. :(

no claire. :(

Interesting that nathan was so hurt and how he got healed.

My favorite traditional animation is SLEEPING BEAUTY.

I also think FANTASIA is a masterpiece of drawing, but I find it difficult to get through the entire movie without feeling sleepy. Every individual segment is astonishingly animated and beautifully scored, but the whole thing is a too rich dessert.

And all of the usual suspects from the 1940s: PINOCCHIO, BAMBI, and DUMBO. It doesn't get any better than those films. And BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE LITTLE MERMAID, and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME feature the best of modern animation techniques.

Mini-rant on Honeymoons:

An acquaintance was griping recently that he had to cut his honeymoon short because his boss required him to be back at work for a major deal in which he was a key player.

It is not feasible, in reality, to schedule a wedding around a potential "deal" in the making at work, since weddings are often planned a year out.

OTOH, I began thinking about "honeymoons" and their "intent."

Honeymoons were "invented" to give men and women an opportunity to become acquainted "away from" family and friends.  It was the chance they needed to learn about one another.  It was the chance they needed to become "intimate" without having to face knowing eyes and smiles every time they left their room to take a meal.

I then considered my acquaintance who had been living with his now-wife for more than two years before marriage.

Hell....he's HAD his honeymoon.  All he's truly bitching about now is a vacation cut short.

It's not like some irrecoverable opportunity has been lost. That happened the first night they slept together!

Mini-rant over.

John Lasseter is now the head of ALL of Disney's animation divisions, so his name will be listed as Executive Producer on all Disney animation, Pixar or not. I'm sure he had input on MEET THE ROBINSONS. The studio's previous CGI work without him was not well received, and MEET THE ROBINSONS got much better reviews and did good (but not great) business.

DR elmore - Have a calm, cool, collective and constructive day and meeting this afternoon.

As for car rental companies, I usually go with Enterprise too.  Their online specials/discounts are consistently pretty good deals in my experience.

They also usually upgrade me without even asking. When we were in LA for Sacco and Vanzetti, we had our pick of cars and since I loved the PT Cruiser even before they were on the market, I finally got to drive one. I chose a yellow one; it looked like a taxi. I love driving it but since I'm on my 4th Toyota Corolla and they're so reliable, I'll probably always stick with them.

When I met up with my partner Peter out there, he had chosen the very same yellow cruiser. (His kids chose it, actually!)

Yep.  And when they get that large, they drop trumpets like crazy.  Of course, they bloom profusely, too.  I've had this one in a pot for at least six years (rooted off a cutting), but this is the first year it's actually produced more than one bloom at a time.  It has been blooming steadily since July.

Next I watched the remaining special features on the second disc in the set. Among them are a stills gallery (with some interesting looking lobby cards and posters from around the world), an audio critique of the movie (against film clips, stills, etc. on the screen), and excerpts from Hitchcock's interviews with Francois Truffaut (which were later translated into his 1967 book HITCHCOCK). The only annoying thing about their interview was that Everything said by either man had to be translated by an interpreter, and she's talking over them as they're trying to forumlate questions or particularly answers (which seems to intimidate Hitchcock and doesn't allow him to always seem to complete his thoughts.)
Title: Re:CGI
Post by: Matt H. on November 13, 2007, 01:19:42 PM
The final bonus feature on the disc was the 1941 comic adventure CROOK'S TOUR with the two featured characters in the film - Caldicott and Charters. It's 81 minutes of film that could have been done in 30. I'm sure it was wildly popular in Britain at the time, but though I find them amusing, 81 minutes was a bit much for me. That's a bonus I'll never watch again.

I'll watch THE LADY VANISHES many more times (hopefully).

My sister Paula just called.

Emily and Ryan were  married a month ago today, and today Ryan was admitted to the hospital.  There is a possibility that he has some cancerous tumors behind his bladder and it will be known for sure probably later today, he will be moved to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore very soon.

Prayers and good thoughts will be most appreciated, and news will be shared when it is known.

Very unsettling news, Jrand.  My prayers go out to Ryan and the whole family.

I had a nice surprise yesterday. Our gardening show producer dropped off a wreath she made of things she found in the woods and in her garden. It's so beautiful but I couldn't really capture how amazing it really is. She didn't even stop to say hello but just left it as a surprise.

It makes me appreciate things that you would normally overlook--acorns, fungus on dead trees, things that look like weeds. She can see beauty in the smallest things and figure out a way to put them together to make something like this! I admire her talent so much!

Either that, or she is casting a spell on you.

The Summit Meeting is over, the estate taxes paid, and the debt settled between the estate and the outstanding debt Macbeth owed my dad's estate paid.  Quite grudgingly, and quite unfriendly, but paid.  Both Macbeths showed up, and Jo remarked after they had gone that Lady M spent more time trying to eavesdrop on the meeting than visiting with her.  Macbeth is clearly pissed at me, and he wouldn't hand things to me; he threw things into the middle of the table.  In a surprise twist, the company also paid me the balance of what was outstanding from my dad's equal payment to me, which I was never expecting. My goal to to see Randy and Tom got the full amount of what dad intended to give them, and I never intended to ask for any more money.  My brother was quite insistent that this settled all debts, which it does, but I'm sure as well that it settl;e all further communication between us.  During the approximate 90 minutes they were here, Lady M spoke not a word to me, and I'm sure that she's raging over the fact that $28,000 was taken from her the company's bank account.

Now my nephew Cory and his new bride Andrea are here visiting and playing Wii sports games with Randy and Jo.  I couldn't get to his wedding last month in Alabama, but my new niece Andrea is a beauty, and I like her very much.

I was.  I saw the newish Measha Brueggergosman CD that you had mentioned about a month ago, but I also found an older CD on an obscure label that features her in the Copland Dickinson songs and the Barber Knoxville.  I doubt that anyone shall ever surpass Upshaw, but it will be nice to have this one, too.

Cilla, we have had TIVO for several.  Direct TV has there own DVR system now, which we didn’t realize until the new boxes were installed.

Keith likes the new software, I’m not sure as it is completely different than the old one.  We aren’t sure yet what the new high def channels are & it took two days to for them to load the original ones, so I’m still punching in shows to watch.  I think all our season passes are on.  I need to figure out the “wish list” of shows & actors I want recorded when they air, be it a month or a year from now.

We seem to be missing a nice option of the TIVO software, automatic recording of shows tivo thinks you will enjoy.

I took the opportunity tonight to indeed watch FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. Not as much fun as the original, but the first 2/3 was an OK adventure. It truly fell apart in the final 1/3 making no sense whatsoever.

It looked spectacular on Blu-ray, though, and it had DTS-HD Master Audio, the highest level of DTS sound available which my new receiver had no trouble at all decoding. Thrilling sound.

Even though they were not in full costume... Even though there was no 24-piece orchestra playing Larry Blank's wonderful orchestration... Even though there was elevator... Even though there was no snow falling from the "skies"...  I had a wonderful time at the run-thru of Irving Berlin's White Christmas.  What a wonderful show filled with great music and lots of Heart!

They restructured the opening sequence for this year's edition of the show, and as soon as Brian D'Arcy James started singing "White Christmas", well... That was the first time I started to cry.  Then when he started "Count Your Blessing Instead of Sheep", well...

Between all my bouts of near-crying, I was treated to some great singing and dancing by a very talented cast.  I really liked David Ives' book of the show too.  And now I'm thinking of making a trip up to Boston to see the show in all of it's costumed and orchestra-supported glory.

I will say that one of my fondest memories of Mr. Levin was when he sent me one of the first copies of Son Of Rosemary in which he has an anagram that he never solves and dares the reader to do it.  Apparently it took him weeks to do so.  I got lucky - because I'm so obsessed with words, I was lying in bed and the word just arranged itself, and I called him the next day and gleefully reported I'd gotten it in just a matter of hours.  He hung up on me.  Then he called me back and gave me another puzzler - I got that one, too (I think he gave me a name that was the real name of an author who used a nom de plume - Ayn Rand).  He also was very impressed that I'd caught on to the book's conceit really early on because he writes that Rosemary is watching a certain movie on TV.  I thought to myself, why out of all the movies in the universe would he choose that one?  The answer became obvious.

After the run-thru, I met up with currently E&T DR Jason for dinner.  He's in his final days of rehearsal for A Christmas Carol, and he's having a wonderful - if exhausting - time.  We grabbed dinner down at East of Eighth, then walked up 34th Street to catch a movie.  Alas, once we got to 34th Street, there was really no movie showing there that either of us wanted to see.  So we walked up to 42nd Street...

*And, no, I did not cry at all during dinner.  However, our waiter Allen did have eyes.  ;)

Of course, Deceit was my Ira Levin homage.  I just noticed that what looks like a straight to DVD film that came out today is entitled - wait for it - Deceit.

We ended up seeing "Dan In Real Life".  In short, a very sweet movie.  Not a great movie, not a blockbuster.  Just a good movie.  Yes, I did tear up a few times.  -And Steve Carrell and Dane Cook and Nobret Leo Butz and Matthew Morrison (in more or less a cameo) to boot!  And I think it was the first time that I was not bugged by Juliette Binoche's presence on the screen.  ;)

Have been in bed with Freddy and Bosco for the last hour while reading MURDER AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH...a book that I am very much enjoying BK!

I am now taking a snack break and then will read a bit more before heading off to slumberland.

Or a disability depending on who you love  ;)

When I'm worried and I can't sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings

I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads
And one by one I count them as they slumber in their beds
If you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep counting your blessings

I think I shall get some sleep. Today was very productive. I worked very hard and worked myself right out of my funk.  Tomorrow there is much to do including putting together my power point for my seminar presentation on Thursday. It's for the FPD and I just can't get into it.  It's an easy topic and I have a partner who I told to go first. Hopefully she will have a lot to say so I can just skate.  I think I've spoken at these silly things for the past 7 years.  I have no idea why I agreed to do it again, especially since I don't work there anymore!

OH! Here's a good one.  I got another call today from the phone repair guy for LexisNexis.  He wanted me to put him on hold so he could work on the static on the line my rep gets when he calls me.  WHAT!   At first I did it, then I got on the line and asked why on earth I should allow them to tie up my business line when it's their problem and I didn't ever have static.  He told me he thought my local company had a problem. I told him no one else had ever complained.   It was strange. Makes me wonder if it's really the gov't tapping my phone

Who's doing the "Danny Kaye" part in this production?

Jeffrey Denman

-Who happened to direct and co-star in the recent production of Yank! the DR elmore attended - and liked - last weekend.

Am I the only one who wants to ask (even though I know it isn't):  "Is that a EUPHEMISM"?

Which part?  "some business"?  "lively discussion"? or "Mexican food"?

You know, at first glance, I totally misread the word "shirts" as "shorts"

Well, that too.

DR JoseSPiano - were you at Borders today, taking advantage of the 40% discount on CDs?

DR singdaw - I actually resisted the special 40%-off "sale" yesterday and today.  I really do have quite a number of unlistened to, let alone unwrapped, CDs still sitting on my shelves.  Frankly, there was really nothing I was interested in buying right now since I already have most everything I want right now.  Also, the CD departments at my local Border's (Time-Warner Center and Penn Station) are quite lacking in their selection.

*I even went into Virgin today after the movie to browse and buy... Although I ended up not buying anything.  And I even have TWO $5.00 off coupons right now!  -Something must in be retrograde.  ;)

I've been on my computer for about an hour and it's turned itself off four, count 'em, FOUR time!!  And I'm just reading posts and checking my e-mail! :o What's going on?  To turn it back on, I have to disconnect the power cord.  That's $#@& inconvenient. :P

Otherwise, when I got home and checked my mail, I received BK's new Kritzerland release, "Une Chambre en Ville;" "The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Cameleon Skin;" the original concept album to "Blackbeard: A New Musical;" and from England, the region 2-PAL DVD (not yet available in the US!) "Battlestar Galactica" season 3!  Plus a two DVDs, a videotape and a CD for my niece.  Talk about hitting the jackpot! ;)

My computer is back up...after another TWO shut-downs. :P I'm off to bed.  I'll talk to my sister's boyfriend later today (he built my computer) and hopefully, he'll be able to figure out what the heck is going on. :-\

Good night, Der Brucer and Adriana. 8)
