Well, you've read the notes, the notes were presented chronilogically, and now it is time for you to post until the chronological cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BUNBURY!
-
No one in the jernt but li'l ol' me.
-
And I'm squeezing the Charmin.
-
George has arrived.

Butterscotch = yummy :D

Last night's run-through (the first in the performance space) o fNite of the Living Dead! The Musical! lasted THREE HOURS!! :o
And that DOESN'T include the 10 minute intermission that we took! :-\
-
Several of us actors were talking amongs ourselves, HOPING that the composer/book writer/music director can be talked into cutting some things. Pray for Rosemary's Baby!
-
Other than that, we got through it. ::)
;)
-
A film with the same format. A Character reading the styory and it unfolds.
The Neverendibg Story (which actually only covered a portion of the booK.)
Its sequal which I have never seen I think covers the other portion.
I also think that the music score is all wrong for this movie.
The exception being the title song which I somehow have a fondness for.
-
My ankle is healng well! I was even given a new boot to use around the house and does not have a cement block duct tape to wear even to bed. No turning over before. It's heaven- like getting away to the Bahamas. I think of t he old boot in musical comedy terms, and to paraphrase Tressy Tessie Tura (the Texas Twirler) about the old boot- "I paid 8 bucks for that costume; it scratches the devil out of me, and it don't bump when I do." Back to the beach, boys and girls!

My, such lovely photos last night from DR Jose and DR Vixmom!
I confess that I was quite impressed with the colors on the trees when I was in Pittsburgh. I have a picture of a tree near where my parents are that looks like it's on fire.
Vixmom, we also get that leaf bug down here in Florida. I think they are kinda neat.
I'm glad that DR Elmore is home safe and sound.
JRand, I'm so glad that you received good news on Ryan's tumor being benign. :)
I'm getting tired of "Dancing with the Stars". Much as I like Marie, I think it's time she go home as well.
I taped "Heros" so I haven't seen it yet. I'll do that sometime today.
I have my follow up appointment today. I'm looking forward to it. I have many questions.
-
Lovely photos from DR VIXMOM. That's some RED leaves!!
Paraganglioma is the diagnosis....

I have to work today. Oh well.

Good morning! Today is my Friday. I was supposed to be leaving for Vegas this afternoon; but, instead, I will stay home and be a good boy.

DR JRand57, I am SO pleased about the good news for Ryan and you and your family. :) :) :) :)
-
Good morning, all! I've called the Post Office twice now to pick up my mail, and both times I've been told to call later since the carriers are in a meeting. What the hell?
Today, first the mail when ever, then Toyland. After that back here to sort through the mail, then continue with the Men's Chorus work.
DR MattH, there's a new book, JESUS FREAKS, about the case that inspired the LAW&ORDER episode you watched last night.
-
Good morning all.

Great news also from DR Kerry.
And

One day today (fairly quiet) and a half day tomorrow and then it's off to Long Island.
-
I have my performance evaluation today at 11am. Based on the evaluation I was handed yesterday everything will go smoothly.
-
DR Jane, I'm trying to picture a dog bowing. Or even bow-wowing. ;)
Hope your body heals quickly! Hurry back to us!
Lovely photos, DR Vixmom - thanks for sharing! :D
I am intrigued by Amazon's Kindle. Yes, I am.
-
Good morning, DR Ben. ***EVALUATION VIBES!!!*** to you! :)

Last night, I heard Mendelssohn's Elijah performed in Carnegie Hall by the Collegiate Chorale, conducted by Robert Bass, along with a certain Mr. Bryn Terfel.
The hall was just about sold out. The choir was remarkably precise for a group of 200+ singers. As would be expected, Mr. Terfel was outstanding. Some of the other soloists a bit less so. But still, all in all quite an enjoyable evening.
There were no program notes; instead, we were cued through the structure of the piece and the texts by a digital display hung above the performers. I was reticent; indeed, I was reticent. But it worked pretty well.
It was pretty late for a school night when I got home, so I'm a little droopy today. :)

Tuesday morning greetings! Today's my Friday, too. I'm looking forward to 6 days off and to not having to throw a Thanksgiving extravaganza.
DR Singdaw - I am so envious that you saw/heard Bryn Terfel in person last night. His voice is the one that I hear most often coming from my iPod.
DR JRand - good news about Ryan - please keep us posted.
DR Danise - follow-up doctor visit vibes!
-
I love Butterscotch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterscotch)! In fact, there are some of these in my desk drawer:
-
Thanks for the good vibes/wishes for the doctor visit. I'm just praying this will be the LAST surgery for a long, long, long time, if ever.
I do feel a major change in my back. I would go so far as to say that I look like a different person. ;)
I was shocked the other night when I mentioned an Errol Flynn movie and learned that Thelma didn't know who he was! I expect that from people younger then me but not older :o !! I didn't think would be possible!

Good morning!
Another warm day for November. Going to be in the mid to upper 70s today. This morning, I was out of the house to go to my dental appointment for a cleaning at 7:10, and I was only in shirtsleeves. That's how warm it is!
-
Thank you, DR Elmore, for the book reference. Very interesting. I know L&O often bases its cases on real life events. This I found very bizarre.
-
Try as I might, I can't summon up any outrage over bk's opinion of THE PRINCESS BRIDE. While I found it pleasant fun when I first saw it, it's never been a favorite and I have no feelings one way or the other about it.
It must be a GREAT favorite, however, since they keep releasing new DVD versions of the film. There must have been three or four different releases of the movie since the inception of DVD.
-
I will say this about THE PRINCESS BRIDE. I've never been in a show that had a great contingent of male actors in it (WEST SIDE STORY, 1776, LAST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA) that there weren't several who could quote the movie verbatum.
-
This afternoon I'll be watching PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. Disney is overnighting the DVD to me so I can participate in an on-line press junket for the movie tonight at 7:30. I read almost nothing kind about the movie (didn't see this one in theaters; I have seen the other two), so I don't really know what to think it'll be like.
-
As for those kinds of fantasies, I liked BIG FISH and WILLY WONKA (both versions), but my favorite is THE SEVEN FACES OF DR. LAO.
-
I am having lunch out this afternoon with best friend John (our only lunch this week), so my viewing will be on a slightly different schedule for a Tuesday.
-
Unseasonably warm here in SW Ohio, too. I just walked across the street to mail thank-you notes to the panelists from last week's grantmaker program and it's eerily warm and still. We're supposed to have thunderstorms tomorrow and a 20-degree drop in temps. Of course, the thermostat inside our building is set for winter, so it's stifling inside.
-
My understanding is that the middle of the country is going to change, weather wise, quite rapidly in the next day.
Our weather guy said that Denver was knocking on 80 degrees and will be in the single digits by Friday! Wow!
-
Thelma just called and is on her way to pick me up for my appointment. She's also going to take me to the grocery store and the post office. I'm so grateful for her help. I don't know what I would have done without her!
-
Caught up, but I have to do some tax stuff now.

Hmm... The Lovely Wife(tm) and I are both big Princess Bride fans (and TLW can quote nearly every Rob Reiner film out there), but I certainly can understand bk's issues. Not being so wrapped up in movie scores, that issue was never one for me. For my money, though, TPB is the only movie that I know where I love the movie as much as the book (I've long joked that my epitaph will be "the book was better."), albeit for entirely different reasons.
I suppose that telling you that we routinely re-enact the Billy Crystal/Carol Kane sequence ("Get away from me, witch!... Humperdinck, Humperdinck, Humperdinck...I'm not listening") would probably qualify as TMI, so I'll refrain... :)
The one part of the extras that I loved was finding out that Andre the Giant got rides to school from Samuel Beckett... talk about your odd pairings!
-
I don't know whether BK will be amazed at this or not, but "The Princess Bride" has always left me cold, too.
It's all very watchable. It's not without interest. But it doesn't have any afterglow for me. It goes right out of my mind and the biggest problem, I think, is that it never once enters my heart.
Knopfler's score -- and that gosh-awful song -- DO HARM THIS FILM...enormously.
Another holy grail folks cannot understand my not caring for is "The Godfather."
I see it. I appreciate it. It has its moments. But the overall package, to me, is "Feh"! Brando is "okay" but not, IMO, brilliant. I've always thought that reactions to this film, especially among men, have to do with how they saw themselves, or how they felt about life and their place in it, when they saw it. It's my story (and I'm stickin' to it) that the film revealed things to them they thought only they daydreamed about. It was an escape that fulfilled a fantasy. I have my own films like that that most others guys don't like, either, so it's a draw in that regard.
I "get" "The Godfather II" -- this one is the real deal. But the original is a cold fish for me.
-
I think I'll head down now and watch last night's CSI: MIAMI before my ride comes for lunch.
WBBL.

It was an escape that fulfilled a fantasy. I have my own films like that that most others guys don't like, either
The Red Shoes? ;)
-
I'm in agreement with the esteemed BK in re: The Princess Bride. I wanted to love it, and I don't. It tries to be the book, and yet it never quite gets there.
It's like I wanted to love Return to Oz, but that film, too, holds me away at an arms distance, unembraceable. (Only, of course, in the case of RtO it isn't the score thats the problem.)
Last week, while at Sam's Club, der Brucer and I spotted the cover of the new PB20 DVD. The only thing that I found remarkable was the caligraphy used for the title. Turn it upside-down, and it's exactly the same! (There's a word for that kind of stunt, but I can't remember it just now.)

Fletcher, counter-surfer that he is, found a bag of carrots that I left out.

It is a gorgeous, sunny (but cool) day here in Oakland CA.

I really liked last night's show. I had also gotten the idea that bob would use the blood and that HRG would not die. ANd i'm really glad about that. I've grown to really like him.
I also recognized adam monroe/kensie as soon as they showed his chin (not sure if we were supposed to). so the big reveal at the end was not a surprise.
I loved how HRG and boyfriend worked together. I loved the exchange with elle and claire (wow elle is mean).
I thought the stuff with hiro and his dad were interesting.
No peter though. :(
But great episode overall. I wonder how many more there are?

BK, I love THE PRINCESS BRIDE as a book. It's certainly in my top ten favourites of all time. I used to keep extra copies of it around to hand out to friends. My first edition is a prized book. I enjoy the movie; like you I think Goldman did a good job adapting his novel. The cast is fine. Still it cannot compare with the book. It's just one of those cases (which is almost always the case) where the book is simply better than movie.
And you're absolutely right the score undermines it. I remember the song underneath the credits and thinking at the time this is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Some god-awful pop-rocky thing when what you wanted was Korngold or Rozsa.
A few of my fav swashes:
Adventures of Robin Hood
Gunga Din (Wm. Goldman's favourite "comic book" movie, as he refers to it)
Adventures of Don Juan
The Vikings
The Prisoner of Zenda
If I Were King
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (an example of a score making a picture better than it is)
Scaramouche
Don Juan (silent- John Barrymore)
Beloved Rogue (silent- John Barrymore)
MARK OF ZORRO (Ty Power)
THIEF OF BAGHDAD (Korda version)
FLAME & THE ARROW
3 & 4 MUSKETEERS (Richard Lester)

Ginny, we should have made a quick getaway to NY for last night's concert. We could also have shared some butterscotch---but no rattling the wrappers during the concert!
-
I have never seen THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
-
I love butterscotch pudding.
-
I am glad to read these comments about THE PRINCESS BRIDE. I have friends and family members who can quote it verbatim and love it. I remember enjoying it, but it wasn't something I felt inclined to see again. I never stopped to analyze why, because I often feel that way about movies that everyone else seems to love. I wish I could be as enthusiastic about them but maybe it's a case of over-hype or something. Definitely it could have been the music.
However, I didn't have that problem with THE BLACK STALLION. While I know it probably deserved a better score, the one it does have didn't detract from the film for me. I loved the film and remember coming out of the theatre somewhat depressed, knowing I would probably never have the opportunity to work something so wonderful.
-
I have never seen THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
Probably not your kind of flick. There's no dancing.

Some questions on the strike.
1. A few days ago I read an article which said that if a stagehand works for an hour and ten minutes, he must be paid for four hours.
Today at Talkin Broadway I read that if a stagehand works for one day, he's paid for four days.
Which one is true, or are they both false?
2. Is it true that a "flymaster" earns $160,000 a year, despite the fact that stages don't have flies any more? If so, how does that work? Does each theater have a "flymaster" - descendant of his father before him, or does the union decide who'll be flymaster for each theater?
And what does this person do since he's not pulling flies?
Or is that a total fabrication?
-
Ginny, we should have made a quick getaway to NY for last night's concert. We could also have shared some butterscotch---but no rattling the wrappers during the concert!

Wonder if Bryn is touring the US?

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And it was sooooo nice to get more than four hours of sleep last night! :)
-
As for "The Princess Bride"... I like the movie, and I guess I even love it. -Although, I've never been one of those who can quote anything from it - although, I don't really quote anything from any movie. -And, yes, I even bought the new Anniversary Edition. In fact, I bought it last night at Virgin since it was on sale for only $10. In any case...
It's by far from a perfect movie, and I, too, wished for a more "sturdy" leading man other than Cary Elwes. But it's a movie I associate with friends since the first couple of times I saw the movie, I was with a great group of friends. And when I was in college, the Byrd Theatre would run it as their midnight movie at least two or three times a year. Being able to see that movie in a classic movie house, complete with a theatre organ pre-show, and all for just $0.99!, well... :)
-
too, wished for a more "sturdy" leading man other than Cary Elwes.
As I said, the fencing duels made it for me. What killed it is the actions of the female lead. Typical male-chauvanistic fairy tale! Her lover is being attacked by the ROUS's, and she just stands there, waiting for the outcome, until someone prevails and she either gets eaten herself or he survives.
I mean, find a branch and whack one of 'em, for goodness sake!

I think I've definitely caught the same bug as the other members of my family. I'm feeling on the verge of nausea but so far it's only that: a feeling.
I too am not a big fan of THE PRINCESS BRIDE; I had a good time when I saw it, but I don't fwel any connection to it. I'm very interested in folk and fairy tales, and I almost went for a degree in folklore instead of Latin, but this film doesn't make me want to see it again.
I do like:
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (both Erroll Flynn and the Disney film with Richard Todd)
THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD
THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (Korda version)
ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Disney)

Some questions on the strike.
1. A few days ago I read an article which said that if a stagehand works for an hour and ten minutes, he must be paid for four hours.

And what does this person do since he's not pulling flies?
Or is that a total fabrication?
1. I believe this is true - they are paid in four hour increments, something the league would like to change.
2. More complicated - if I've read correctly, if a crew member is hired for a load-in of a show he must be paid for the entire load in, whether he works three days or the entire load in (which can take two weeks). However, I'm not sure on this one, so don't take my word for it.
3. Every theater has flies - it's where the lights hang. However, not every theater uses them for the production (mostly plays). I have not heard the $160,000 figure, but routinely have heard the League say $150,000 for department heads. The Union says it's more like 80K, but they are not including all the benefits and overtime, which the League is.
-
Hmm... Now I'm reminded of the sister restaurant of Eatery here in NYC...
(http://whymnyc.com/images/whym_logo.gif) (http://www.whymnyc.com)
To quote the New York Times: "The typography of the word is such that when you turn it upside down, it still spells whym. It’s like a visual, vertical palindrome. How whymsical."
-
As I said, the fencing duels made it for me. What killed it is the actions of the female lead. Typical male-chauvanistic fairy tale! I actually yelled that at the TV last night.
-
I do like:
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (both Erroll Flynn and the Disney film with Richard Todd)...
You scared me for a moment there, Elmore! If you hadn't continued and specified which Disney film, I'd have thought you meant the animated atrocity.
(Alex, the older grandlad, still refuses to watch the Flynn because it portrays Robin as human, instead of a fox. Which Flynn was, of course, but not the way Alex understand it.)
-
And what does this person do since he's not pulling flies?
Why, he meets DR JoseSPiano at the Reservoir, of course! ;)
-
I have not heard the $160,000 figure, but routinely have heard the League say $150,000 for department heads.
I didn't bookmark the article at the time, and of course now I can't find it... I was sure that it said that they were paid despite the fact that the position didn't exist any more...
Is there any such position where that occurs? Maybe I'm just mis-remembering the term flymaster.
Or maybe the article's author was indeed exaggerating on that point.
-
Regarding the strike: many claims have been made on both sides. I would hate to be the one to try to untangle the truth.

Interesting that PRINCESS BRIDE only grossed $30.9-million domestically in 1987 (according to boxoffice mojo.com) and has a reputation of having been a great success. Does anyone know if it was a great financial success outside of the US?

Regarding the strike: many claims have been made on both sides. I would hate to be the one to try to untangle the truth.
Well, it seems to be a fact that stagehands work for 1 hour ten minutes and are paid for 4. That's outrageous! Not even lawyers get that sweet of a deal (I think they round up to the nearest hour, no matter how few seconds of the hour they actually worked.)
I know stagehands were treated terribly in early years and needed a union to get fair treatment... but now it seems that the power has gone over to the unions and there is no fairness for the producers.

Time to head off for work.
I won't be back until close to eleven tonight. And der Brucer will want to be fed.
And I have to be up early tomorrow, for an early shift.
Bleh.

And... (ah, A Chorus Line reference)
Most of the unions have "minimum calls" (Actor's Equity, American Federation of Musicians, etc.). The minimum "show call" for musicians is three hours. What this means is that whether a show happens to run around 90 minutes or one act (like Xanadu or The Drowsy Chaperone or A Chorus Line, or whether it runs the traditional two acts and almost three hours (like Mary Poppins and Wicked), the musicians are paid the same base pay. Doublings (playing more than one instrument), assistant and associate conductors designations are based on the base bay. -However, some "title" designations can be and usually are negotiated (musical director, musical supervisor, etc.).
Some people may say that it's unfair to be paid the same amount of money whether you work for 90 minutes or 150 minutes, well... You have to look at as a "per service" fee, which is essentially what it is. And over the long haul, it all evens out. -And I don't even want to think if either side were to start negotiating based on actual running times for each show: What if a show started a few minutes late due to a problem at the box office or a technical issue? What if the pacing of the show happened to be slower of faster that night thus affecting the running time? Etc., etc., etc. Talk about your nickel-and-diming.
For the AFM - and for AEA - if a show were to go into overtime - past three hours - then those overtimes blocks are based on 15 minute segments. We are not paid for another three-hour call. I believe that IATSE's overtime increments based on half-hour (30 minute) segments. *When Les Miserables first opened, it ran about three hours and ten minutes, and the producers and unions had worked out a standard "overtime" arrangement. Of course, some nights the show would end up running three hours and 16 minutes... Ooops. Well... That was when they show was overhauled and was cut down to under three hours. Les Miserables was also the first show I remember where when they said the show would start at 8:00, it started at 8:00! Please take your seats. Now!
What I've commented about concerns "show call", however, it seems that most of the points of contention between The League and Local One are based on pre-production and rehearsal and preview period. And all the other Unions also have different scales and agreements for the "before Opening" and "after Opening" periods.
In any case...
The New York Times has some pretty good articles on the strike, and I'd check those articles for the facts and figures - at least the ones the League and Local One are releasing. There is a ton(!) of fine print in the contracts from both sides. And a lot of that "fine print" is insurance that people will show up for work each day, and that it will be worth their while to show up for work every day. Now it's just a matter of seeing which side will "compromise" first, and not see "compromise" as a term for "loser". And at this point, there can really be no winner.

Why, he meets DR JoseSPiano at the Reservoir, of course! ;)
Umm... No. I don't usually go for techies.

I believe I have my head above water for the first time in weeks. All 75 minutes or so of Project X is recorded! Whew! That was a project and a half, delivered a mere few days before opening. Oy.

Off to direct a senior choir I work with in their final performance of the year. Pray for Rosemary's Baby, or at least Rosemary's Grandparents.

Well... I know some lawyers who are able to bill by the day, so... Think of it as the retainer fee. ;)
As for getting paid the same whether you work for one hour and ten minutes or the full four hours... First of all, 10 to 15 minutes breaks are mandated every 60 to 90 minutes, so... ;)
Secondly... And this is where the whole issue of "specialists" comes into play... During a rehearsal/load-in process nothing ever goes according to schedule. Nothing. Some things will take longer than planned for, some things may end up taking a lot less time than planned for. So, if Specialist A were to show up at 8:00am for his work call, but due to circumstances beyond his control, he was not able to actually do his Specialist A work until 10:30, does that mean he should not be paid for the time he ended up waiting to work? Should he be penalized since some other departments(s) was not ready for him to do his work? Subsequently, if Specialist B were to show up at 8:00am and go right to work, and then be done at 9:10am, and then due to the way the rest of the day worked out not have to actively(!) work until the afternoon, does that mean he should be off the clock during that period?
I strongly suspect that if people were paid for only for their "active" time, then no one would really want to work. It would not be worth their while. In all lines of work - teaching, office, technical, etc. - there will always be times when one is "not working". I mean, a baseball player gets paid millions for going up to bat once every three to four innings, so... -But that's another bag of worms...
It really is a very complicated issue, and there will be no easy solution to all of is. Let's just hope that some sort of agreement is reached sooner than later so that the ticket buyers - the one who provide the revenue for The League and the payroll for Local One (and AEA, AFM, CSA, SSDC...) can actually see the shows they want to see.

And from the January 1999 issue of Gourmet Magazine:
butterscotch pudding Gourmet | January 1999
Serves 6.
You Asked For It
The Cafe, Rosemont NJ
1 1/4 cups heavy cream
3/4 stick (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
2 1/4 cups whole milk
4 large egg yolks
1/4 cup cornstarch
3/4 teaspoon salt
Accompaniment: whipped cream sprinkled with freshly grated nutmeg
In a saucepan heat cream over moderately low heat until warm. While cream is heating, in a 3-quart heavy saucepan melt butter over moderate heat and stir in brown sugar. Cook sugar mixture, stirring occasionally, until mixture is bubbling all over and appears smooth, about 5 minutes. Carefully add warm cream (mixture will bubble and steam) and cook over moderately low heat, stirring, until sugar mixture is dissolved, about 1 minute. Remove pan from heat.
In a large metal bowl or top of a double boiler whisk together milk, yolks, cornstarch, and salt. Add warm butterscotch mixture in a slow stream, whisking constantly, and set bowl or top of double boiler over a saucepan of simmering water. Cook pudding, whisking constantly, 10 minutes, or until it begins to thicken. Cover bowl or top of double boiler and cook pudding, whisking occasionally, 10 minutes more.
Remove bowl or top of double boiler from pan and cool pudding 5 minutes, whisking occasionally. Divide hot pudding among six 1-cup ramekins or other heatproof dishes. Chill puddings, covered (if you don’t want skins to form) or uncovered (if you do want skins to form), until cold, at least 3 hours, and up to 2 days. Serve puddings topped with whipped cream.

Hi, Jose
That makes sense.
I was assuming, however, that the problems arose after the show was already set up and was just "running." And so it wouldnt' need all those people at all - and yet they have to be paid for the complete run of the show?
But as you can tell I'm totallyl ignorant on the subject. :)
All I know is that I'd love to see some Broadway shows, but can't afford it...and once the strike ends and tickets go up to h elp producers recoup their losses...I'll still less be able to afford to do it.
No win situation all the way around...

Not all lawyers round up to the nearest quarter hour. That will get your fee cut by the court on a federal CJA case, we round up to the nearest 6 minutes (10th of an hour)

Well, I think I may have won my trial this morning. It was a bench trial, so the judge will issue a written ruling in the next couple weeks, but the id was really weak and the gov't didn't offer anything to rebut the testimony that I put on that my client was in California at the time. It's been a long time since I had a "low stakes" trial - where even if we lose it isn't going to impact the rest of my client's life. it was fun

I like "The Princess Bride" very much indeed. I have no problems with Mr Knopfer's score. It would be one of the very few film scores Cds that I play quite often. I also quite like Wille Deville's song. "Storybook Love".
(I am a fan of Mr Knopler's work and I also have a few of Willie Deville/Mink Deville CDs).
I do remember the film dialogue as being a little "fuzzy" at times.
And there is PETER COOK.

Here's how I feel:
-
this morning I had a terrible pain in my back on the right side in about midsection. I think it was from my stomach (which was also hurting) but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's feeling better, but I'm considering calling it at day and going home
-
Think I'll go make some bean soup. I still have 1/2 of a smoked pork chop, that would be good in it.
-
Well, my plan this week was to work a little every day but Thursday. So... laters gaters...it's strange not to have my cell phone...
-
Did you go out with a sheila?
I saw the last of sheila!
-
Of course I'm not considered true blue as I'm a woolly.
-
Am expecting a UPS delivery today -- the novel "Wicked" (which I've never read) and the complete (utterly and entire) soundtrack to "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (at least 4 CDs worth in a special box with leatherette bindings/covers).
-
My Andy Hardy films will start airing tomorrow, I think, and will continue into Thursday with only a small break in programming between the first 7 films or so and the last batch.
-
I saw the last of sheila!
I'm sure you've seen a few she-ras, though. Or she-lads?

Well, I am officially certified as a good employee for another year.

While its makers would like everyone to think The Princess Bride was a huge commercial success, as the gross clearly tells, it wasn't. I don't know what the budget was, but I'd assume around the same as what it grossed. I don't think it did wonderfully overseas, so given its cost vs. gross, I'd say that theatrically it was a loser and not an insignificant one. However, it's probably done well on video, cable, and TV - hard to know if it ever made money, but I'm sure it at least came close to breaking even. Critically I think it was well thought of.
-
News came, it was good, and now the final funding check is in the bank.

The PRIATES OF THE CARIBBEAN DVD never showed up so I filled the afternoon with TV programming.
First, I watched last night's CSI: MIAMI. The show has been running six years now, and Calleigh is the one CSI who's never been involved in any kind of scandal or problem resulted in an I.A.B. investigation. Until last night. Good episode. And I really enjoyed seeing that frosty exterior really do a meltdown when she was insulted by Stetler, the I.A.B. guy who loves to make everyone's life miserable.
-
Next, I watched Sunday night's DEXTER. Wow! Dexter is really being backed into a corner in several ways. Can't believe how tension-filled and involving this series is. One of the best on TV.
-
Next, I scanned through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The gay characters and Luke's parents were all on, so I ended up watching a good bit of the show. Not sure about tomorrow. The boys weren't in the previews but the parents were, so who knows?
-
I finshed up by revisitingan episode of BONES from the second season set. This was the one with a Romeo and Juliet motif. A young well to do kid was found dead and the finger of guilt falls on his girl friend who was a troubled foster child. Since Brennen was a foster child herself, she identifies with the girl who's being hunted.
-
bk, glad the news was good, and that we can dispense with any further FUNDING vibes! :P

One of my DVD players has been having trouble the last couple of days, stuttering when playing discs. (It wouldn't even load the POWER RANGERS disc yesterday, not that I blamed it!)
Anyway, I put in the CD-laser cleaning disc, let it do its thing for a couple of minutes, and voila! problem gone!

Given the mileage you put on your DVD players, I'm betting there's a ton of static electricity that builds up over time.

I don't remember "The Princess Bride" having a theatre release here.
It was a "Video" hit!

No, I'll still participate. They're going to show some bonus features from the set before opening the conference to questions, and I already have some questions. Those bonus featurettes may give me other ones.

Good Afternoon!
Back from the gym. Alas, I'm still not off to a fitting. But give me time. Give me time. ;)
-
And I'm glad I took advantage of the gym/spa on board the Disney Wonder during my cruise.* It was set up on the top deck at the fore, so as you run on your treadmills, you're basically running with the boat. Quite an inspiring view. And the weight equipment was pretty decent too. And that Rain Forest Sauna.... Aaaahhh... :)
*The "deal" I made with myself was that the only way I would be able to eat a dessert - or two - with my dinner was to get up each morning and do some sort of workout. I kept that deal! ...And that Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Soft-Serve(!) Ice Cream was sooooo worth the extra time up in the workout room. :)

Hmm... And now to see just how I can make it down to DC and/or Richmond tomorrow or on Thanksgiving Day. So far, everything is coming up as "Sold Out". :-\

Yes---there is Peter Cook. I forgot!

Hi all! Just wanted to let you know that the doctor said that everything is going well. I still get very, very tired but since I won't go back to work until December 3rd, I have time to get over this.
"Jon-Erik (Hunky) Hexum" I remember when he passed. What a shame and such a waste.
I don't know which John Wayne movie it was but I remember there was a scene when his brat daughter tells him to shoot her boyfriend, which he calmly does. When the girls starts screeming, "You shot him! Your really shot him!" or some such, John tells her that if he dies it would be a first since he used the gun they used to start the 4th of July race and it only fired blanks.
I know putting a gun to your head (even one filled with blanks)would be a bit of a different thing but that was the first thing that jumped in my head when I heard how he had died.
-
You could make it a double feature...I believe OM SHANTI OM is playing there as well.
Umm... No. ;)
Instead, I'm going to see the 4:20 showing of "August Rush" with DR Jason. :)

Of course! I should have called you before I got the ticket.
No worries. I'm about to head down to Ollie's to meet a friend for dinner, and I'll just pop across the street to the theatre and pick up my ticket for tomorrow.

Back from some errands. I'm not quite sure I believe the imdb budget for Princess Bride - I think it was at least 25mil. The imdb is so wrong so often - look at their aspect ratio listing for The Princess Bride - 1:37. Not.
-
I had never seen THE PRINCESS BRIDE until a few months ago. As Matt said earlier, a great many actors I know can quote huge chunks of dialogue from the film. I finally got the film from Netflix and watched it.
It was okay. I found parts of it a little slow moving, and other parts enjoyable. I think, in the end, I have just read too many things about Cary Elwes to find him very charming on the screen.
-
No brag, just fact.
-
DS Betsy loves, loves, loves The Princess Bride. I can take it or leave it, frankly. DS Betsy also loves, loves, loves Knopfler's score for Local Hero, so there ya go. :)
Who knew department?: Is there a Dan Dailey/June Haver renaissance afoot? My review of The Girl Next Door has received thousands of hits (that's a lot, relatively speaking) since it went live yesterday--I had no idea so many people were interested in this film, hardly the apex of musical film achievement.
-

And where was I at the time??? Working! Damn. I miss everything.
Dang! I would NOT have wanted to see that!

Radio City Music Hall no longer shows movies on a regular basis. If there is a very special occasion they may show one but in the 80s when there was discussion about tearing it down they decided after a complete renovation that it would be a performance venue. It was actually built by the man who built the Roxy Theatre (that image of Gloria Swanson standing in the rubble of the Roxy is said to have given an idea to Sondheim for Follies). The man's name was Roxy (Samuel Roxy Rothafel) and after his success with that theatre he decided to build another show palace in the newly created Rockefeller Center. Unfortunately it came about just as the Depression happened and it wasn't successful as a Vaudeville palace but then they began showing movies and that was a huge success. The Roxyettes who performed between movies (IIRC) soon became the Rockettes (Roxy lost control of the venue) and the rest is history. Radio City fell on the same hard times as NYC in the 70s and was almost demolished until a campaign was formed to save and renovate the place.
I did see a movie there in April of 1970 on my class trip to New York. We saw the Easter Spectacular and A New Leaf with Walter Matthau and Elaine May.
-
There must be someone here who saw Toast of New York or South of Pago Pago at RCMH. :o
-
I'm watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I forgot that he calls Peppermint Patty Priscilla. It was fun hearing Charlie say my name.
Do they ever show You're A Good Skate Charlie Brown? I liked that, and haven't seen it since its first airing, I think.
-
I saw THE TAMARIND SEED and WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT, as well as A NEW LEAF, at Radio City Music Hall. Also the reissue of BLADE RUNNER at some point during the 1990's.
-
Time to leave for rehearsal. Hopefully, tonight's run-through will be significantly shorter than last night's. ::) And hopefully, cuts in the script will be made...there is just too much extraneous stuff (and I'm not the only one saying so). We'll see.
Have a good evening, all!

That would be it. I can be flip about the crash, since no one was really injured. The pilot's mother suffered from slight hypothermia, which is understandable, but she has been released from the hospital, as well.

I bet they'll be saying a really long Thanksgiving prayer on Thursday!

Good Evening!
DR elmore - I got my ticket for tomorrow's 1:05pm showing of "Enchanted" - as well as my ticket for "August Rush" at 4:20pm. Do you want to grab a bite to eat beforehand? Or a snack afterwards?
-
DWS Spoiler
Oh Puhleese. I am so sick about hearing from and about the Osmunds. Marie should be going home and she's the first one safe. Gag me
-
Oh - Both Enchanted and August Rush will be here over the weekend. I'm hoping to see both

I can't say, DR Jose; I've got a lot of work to finish in the next two weeks so I might want to run home after. Can I meet you at the theatre around 12:30?
-
Thrilling moment at Radio City:
Josh Groban singing "You Raise Me Up," during which - as if on cue - hundreds of his fans started waving these little lights. Just a breathtaking combo of sight and sound.
-
So, as I was saying...
After my three days on the Disney Wonder, I was treated to a day at Disneyworld as well as a night at the Coronado Springs Resort. -They would have flown me back on Sunday, but due the limited availability of flights, they flew me back Monday morning. -Early Monday morning, but still Monday nonetheless.
The only thing I really wanted to do in the Parks was to finally see the stage version of "Finding Nemo" at the Animal Kingdom.
In fact, I got to see it twice. Well, more like 1 and 1/10th times...
After Jonathan got me checked into my room, we headed right over to the Animal Kingdom to check out the show times. Well, there was one at 1:15, and since it was already 12:30, we went ahead and headed over to the theatre. We asked the staff at the entrance if we could get "VIP" seating - which is usually extended to Disney staff - but due to the "high capacity" Holiday period, they weren't allowing anyone to get VIP'd. So, we got in line.
By the time we got into theatre, we actually ended up with pretty decent seats in the center of the theatre about halfway up. Then we waited for the show to begin. And waited. And waited. ;)
The show started right on time. I heard the familiar music - familiar to me since I had played the auditions for the show last year - and the cast started to come out. After the second number, someone yelled in the audience. There was something wrong in the house right section. Then a few seconds later, the house lights started to come up, and Dorey said to Marlin, "Oh, let's go this way." -And they proceeded off stage...
Attention Ladies and Gentlemen. This performance of "Finding Nemo" is cancelled. Please gather your belongings and proceed to the nearest exit.
What?!?!
Well, we exited the theatre... Then tried to find someone on staff who could tell us what had happened. We saw the EMTs go into the theatre, and saw a couple of staff members running around. And we saw a bunch of very upset audience members. One woman came up to John and me and asked if we knew what was wrong. I guess we looked official. She explained that this was the second she had tried to see the show - the first time it was cancelled for "technical reasons", and now this. Frankly, we did wonder why they stopped the show cold, instead of sending someone in to attend to whomever was in distress, then re-start the show after that.
Long story short... We eventually found out that someone had "simply" fainted due to low blood sugar, and fell over. The people around her didn't know what was happening, and someone yelled, "Someone just died!" - which, of course, didn't make anyone else sitting in that area any calmer. The person was all right, and ended up walking out of the theatre.
-
After the aborted performance of "Finding Nemo", we headed over to DinoLand to ride "Dinosaur". -The last time I was at the park, the ride was down for maintenance, so I had never been on it before. They said there was a bit of a wait time, but we actually didn't wait long at all. It's a pretty cool ride - basically a really rough(!) Jeep ride with dinosaurs and lots of explosions and lightning.
*While we were waiting in line, we heard some other people in line commenting that the ride was VERY scary. Well, I turned to Jonathan and said, "Ooh... Well, this ride can't be as scary as "Finding Nemo". Someone died while seeing that show." ;D
-Yes, I know. I'm wrong. Soooo wrong.
-
After "Dinosaur", we headed over to "Expedition Everest", one of the park's newest roller-coasters. We had obtained Fast Passes when we got to the Park, and by the time we were done with "Dinosaur", it was time for "Expedition Everest". Well...
WOW!!!!!!!
I had a blast. The premise of the ride is that you're riding a train through/around Mount Everest, when suddenly you come across the infamous Yeti monster. The Yeti ends up wreaking havoc with the tracks, and, well... WOW!!!! There are no loops or upside-down segments, but it's very fast, and has some of the best fake-out and near-miss "accidents" I've ever experienced. A lot of it also takes place in the dark, and all the "unknown" certainly adds to the excitement/fear factor.
-
The first time I rode what is now the "Dinosaur" ride, it was called "Countdown to Extinction" - a very uncheery title indeed! - and was scary as hell, certainly not for younger kids, I thought. The next time, Disney's DINOSAUR film was about three weeks from being released, and essentially the same ride had been renamed "Dinosaur" and somehow felt a lot more family-friendly. Or maybe it was just because I knew where all the shocks were going to be.
-
I love REAPER! The jerk boss who makes life hell for Sam, and the other employees reminds me of a much thinner version of john McGlinn.
-
Once we left the Mount Everest, we headed back over the theatre to see "Finding Nemo" again. While we were walking over there, the casting director called us, and said that he was able to get us VIP'd into the theatre. However, the catch was that we had to head into the theatre first, instead of them putting up the Reserved placards. So, we all met up at the stage door, and headed into the theatre. And waited. And waited. -We waited about 45 minutes. In any case...
The show started... And continued with no interruptions from the audience or otherwise. In any case...
I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by the whole presentation. The costumes, sets and lighting were top-notch. The performers were great. But the whole thing seemed rushed - like they had to make sure the show would not run too long for the "typical" Theme Park audience. There was no time for anything to settle, and none of the buttons on the numbers ever really buttoned. Even the applause breaks seemed a bit "confused".
I was expecting to get a little teary-eyed, but I didn't even get a lump in my throat. I remember getting a bit emotional during the auditions. There are some great songs in the show, and the start of the show is most certainly a dramatic and traumatic moment (Coral, the mother, gets killed!), but it all just sped by like a high-speed comedy.
I did like the show. I really was just hoping to love it. But there were trul some beautiful stage pictures, and some of the costumes/puppets are truly ingenious.
*And after the show, we headed back over to "Expedition Everest" since we had grabbed another set of Fast Passes earlier in the day. :)
-

From what I understand, the ride is actually now a bit more rough and "bouncy" in some places, and, supposedly, scarier. I liked it. However, I did think it was a ride that was worth riding if there was no wait to get on. I don't think I would have liked the ride as much if I had had to wait an hour in line.

Sadly, the one "ride" at Disneyworld which always scared me - and many others - "Alien Encounter" was "retired" a few years ago.

What a day, DR JOSE!
-
After Animal Kingdom, Jonathan dropped me off at Epcot - Thank you, Jonathan. I just wanted to do my usual lap around the Lagoon, stop in a few stores, and get a bite to eat. I did grab some dinner in "Japan", and I did stop in a couple of the stores. Surprisingly, I didn't buy anything - not even my usual stock of origami papers at Mitsukoshi. I also knew that if I started buying souvenirs for everyone back home, I really would have bought souvenirs for everyone. Well...
I wanted to stick around for the fireworks, but as I reached "Mexico", I could just feel the day catching up with me. I checked out some of the new exhibits at Futureworld, then hopped on the monorails back to the Magic Kingdom, then the bus back to the resort. I got my luggage organized, took a shower, then went to bed. And when my wake-up call came at 4:00am... Then it was off to the airport. And thus ends my Disney Weekend.
-
We still have our "Skippy" doll from "Alien Encounter."
(Skippy was the lovable alien creature who was fried during the pre-show demonstration.)
-
Oh... We also found out that it is Disney's policy that if there an incident of any kind in the audience, the standard protocol is to stop the show and clear the theatre/attraction. I guess that is the safest thing to do, but I do have to wonder if having a team of EMTs trying to make their way into a theatre while just under 2000 people are exiting is the best scenario.
-
What a day, DR JOSE!
Indeed!
And now that I'm "on the list" as it were for the Cruise Line, I actually qualify for some of the staff specials that are offered from time to time. I highly suspect that I may be taking another cruise in February if I can fit in in my schedule. :)
-
And one for Maelstrom
-
(Maelstrom was one of my favorite Epcot rides. Short but fun.)
-
And the theatre for "Finding Nemo" is built on the site of the former "Tarzan Rocks" show. They basically just enclosed that theatre.
Now if they would just bring back their "Hunchback of Notre Dame" stage show to MGM-Studios. That truly was/is my favorite Disney Theme Park show. -And not just because I helped to cast the first cast for that show too. It was just so well put together. And, yes, I always cried when I saw it.
-
I've always thought that reactions to this film, especially among men, have to do with how they saw themselves, or how they felt about life and their place in it, when they saw it.
In my view, many people's opinions about film are about this--their personal reactions to and involvement in the story--but get attributed to the acting, the direction, etc.
-

What a day and what a great connection to make. Congrats!
-
They foolishly tried to make you watch a Norway tourism movie AFTER the Maelstrom ride. You could tell who is "in the know" by watching who made a hasty exit from the building before the tourism film.
-
Oh oh oh! I didn't realize that Enchanted and August Rush open tomorrow Duh! Looks like I'll work in the morning and maybe do a double feature. COOL!!!

Can one of our chef-types here help me out with something.
I have a package of vermicelli with no instructions on it as to how to make it. It's been forever since i've made it. And i can't remember if you boil it in water like noodles for a minute or two. Or if you cook it in a wok.
To make it worse i'm trying to look online. But i'm not sure if it's rice or noodles. It comes all bundled up and it's basically very long and winded round and round (if that helps).
Thanks.
-
There were some rumors that Disney was going to announce which two new country pavilions they were going to add to Epcot a few months ago during the 25th Anniversary Commemoration of Epcot, but no announcement ever materialized. And, apparently, there was no big WDW-sponsored public celebration in honor of Epcot's Silver Anniversary either. In any case...
What county would you like to see added to the World Showcase?

What does the ingredient panel say? Are they made out of flour, semolina, rice flour, mung bean flour, etc.?
And is it Asian-style vermicelli? -a.k.a. rice sticks? Or something a bit more substantial.
Since you say it's bundled up, I'd say it's "rice sticks". Just give them a soak in hot water, then add them to your dish and finish heating/cooking through.

DR Cillaliz, it also got on my last nerve when they called marie safe first. I highly doubt she had the most votes. But some how it is coming across like she has the biggest support.
I don't want to sound mean. But who exactly are her fans? I think some people are just fans of the show and they pick a favorite. But some people obviously have a fan-base. I mean i know the osmonds have been around for a long time. But wouldn't her fans be from like 30 years ago?
I am cheering for helio still. BUt i would be quite satisfied if mel b won.
I think her partner max said something interesting. She has the most natural talent. ANd that is true. She really is good. Although it is much easier for her than for the others.

Some of the fans are from 30 years ago, but at least here in the states, Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, and various talk shows, Oprah, Larry King etc. Have featured the Osmunds over and over and I am so sick of seeing them. It's like you can't channel surf witout finding something Osmund. I can accept Jennie going home, but it should have been Marie
-
Is it Osmund or Osmond?

Okay i just went to get them. This is what it says:
Longkou Vermicelli. Yes it has strings around it tying it up. It is in a plastic bag.
The ingredients do not seem right. It says: green beans, broad beans, peas, water.
Keep dry.
But there is no indication of how to cook it (which i find very odd). I was thinking you cook them like noodles. But for less time. but maybe not.
-
I suppose that telling you that we routinely re-enact the Billy Crystal/Carol Kane sequence ("Get away from me, witch!... Humperdinck, Humperdinck, Humperdinck...I'm not listening") would probably qualify as TMI, so I'll refrain... :)
Vixdad and I do this too
"Get away from me witch!"
"I'm not a witch, I'm your wife!!"
-
Osmond.
Yes i saw Donny hosting/doing reporting for one of the entertainment shows (i think entertainment tonight).
Well actually julianne was doing some reporting duties too.
The one thing that really bugged me though about seeing donny on the show was how he was putting down jennie garth saying she should go since she had told him she didn't even know her dances yet (i think the day before).
And then he went on about how marie's fanbase was so much larger.
-

A lot of Asian/Oriental foodstuffs have no cooking directions on them. You're just supposed to know. ;) In any case...
Just give them a good rinse and brief soak until they are pliable before you proceed with your dish.
-
Thanks. So you think they are rice vermicelli? as opposed to noodle vermicelli?
So basically i could soak them and then put them in a wok with other ingredients?
-
Like MBARNUM, I have not seen THE PRINCESS BRIDES.
-
Glad to hear the good news about Ryan, JRAND.
Healing vibes to DANISE.
Vibes to all who need them.
-
Glad to hear about the fundraiser check, BK. I hope that is one issue now off your mind.
-
When they did the Millenium Village back in 2000, I had a particular affinity for the "Journey to Jerusalem" ride sponsored by Israel. You sat in vehicles similar to the old Universal Hanna-Barbera ride and felt like you were a piece of ancient Torah parchment being transported to events in Israeli history which played out on a large screen. I'd love to see that ride start up again, if only because people don't believe me when I tell them how effective it was.
-
I suspect the insane father will break out of the prison and take one or both of them hostage after some stalking. Isn't this more Halloween than Christmas?
I thought the same thing, DR Elmore. We can't be done with him or they wouldn't have brought him back today and had the boys talk back to him.
-
I went to Radio City Music Hall many, many times in my life. I think OPERATION PETTICOAT was the first movie I ever saw there.
-
I watched another BONES episode from the DVD set. This was the one where Booth participated in an underground fight club. Good episode. David Boreanaz was in exceptionally good shape for this episode.
-
Thanks. So you think they are rice vermicelli? as opposed to noodle vermicelli?

You have "bean threads". They will cook up "clear" rather than "white" like rice sticks do.
And, yes, after the rinse and soak, you just add them to the wok with the other ingredients.
-
Next, I put the second disc in THE JAZZ SINGER set on and watched the finale from GOLD DIGGERS and THE ROGUE SONG. Then the short on the history of sound (trumpeting Warners' winning the sound Oscar for YANKEE DOODLE DANDY). And then I started watching the documentary on THE DAWN OF SOUND again. Only got about 30 minutes in before I came back up to go to the press junket for PIRATES 3.

I can't believe that after all the talk that has gone on about DWTS being a popularity constest; that anyone is surprised that Marie is still in the contest. The entire Osmond family is still an institution to a lot of people in this country. And there are over 5 million members of the Church of Latter-day Saints in the United States alone. You don't think that aren't voting for their Marie?
-
The PIRATES 3 junket was irritating. The streaming video constantly stopped and started, and the question stuff was VERY time consuming. I submitted my question and then logged off. When I get the transcript, I'll see if the question got answered.

When I went back downstairs I watched the new BONES episode tonight. A chilling episode with the serial killer back at large.

I'm sure it'll be here tomorrow, and I couldn't be really angry about that. My mail delivery is SO spotty that I surprised I ever get ANYTHING.

of course we are amongst the first to bolt for the doors before they hermetically seal you in

HOUSE had another episode where the focus again went to the doctors vying for the jobs rather than on the case which was a lot more interesting. I'm glad the process of elimination is over next week.

where do we know the magician patient from? It's been drivingme crazy and I didn't catch his name

First night of my vacation and I've stayed up late watching TV with DH Richard. Have to bake pies tomorrow, but at least I don't have to set the alarm for 6am.

where do we know the magician patient from? It's been drivingme crazy and I didn't catch his name
Richard was wondering the same thing - hope someone knows the answer!

My alarm did, however, go off at 6am today, so I'm going to sleep.
'night!
-
Yes, I'm hoping to get more sleep tomorrow than I did today. I won't have to get up for a dental appointment tomorrow morning.
-
I've got to go to sleep too. I do have work to do tomorrow morning. I was going to work all day,but think I'll see one or two of the movies tomorrow afternoon instead. My stomach has finally stopped hurting, so hopefully I can get some sleep. Night all

Yes, indeed. This is the second show that I watch that he's guest starred on this season.

Heading downstairs now to read a bit and then go to bed.
Good night!

I'm the one who wants to see OM SHANTI OM!
DR MBarnum - did you see FIDA? I really recommend it!
I have not seen FIDA, and it is one of those I plan to get to someday. I am also thinking I need to see KAL HO NA HO..
-
JOHN BEDWARDS - a possible nickname if it ever happens that John Edwards ever gets caught in a sex scandal
-
Back from a pleasantly pleasant drive and I shall now watch a short motion picture.
-
I have not seen FIDA, and it is one of those I plan to get to someday. I am also thinking I need to see KAL HO NA HO..
I can't tell you how many times I've watched KAL HO. . .!
Quite a charming film!
FIDA is not charming, being a drama, but a nifty variation on BODY HEAT and other neo-noir films. There's a lot more flesh and blood on display in FIDA than in any of the Bollywood flicks I've happened to see.
Tonight before I watched SWING TIME, I rewatched the four songs from FIDA, which actually give no indication as to the twists and turns the film is going to take.
