Title: THE THIRD MOVEMENT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had many movements, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a movement.

Last night's rehearsal went...long. ::) It'll tighten up as opening night (THIS Friday!! :o) approaches, but I think it's as short a script as it's gonna be.  I got there at about 6:45 PM, we didn't start the run until about 8:20 or so and we didn't leave until 12:05 (after notes)!

I did my act one costume changes but not the act two changes.  They're simple, but I need to bring a pull-over sweater, a shirt and another dinner-type jacket tonight and then I'll have all my costume pieces.  I don't have any real quick changes, but a couple that I have to do backstage (I'm not the only one), but fortunately, I'll have at least two or three pages to do them. :)

Good morning, all! I've got another day on the Men's Chorus charts. Yesterday was a difficult one: a big band chart for Kelli O'Hara, yhe guest artiste and the boys, only not enough saxes and not enough brass.  Then you have to think too hard to make it work since it will never sound right or big enough.  Oy.

Today's number is one that calls for a marching  band sound.  Hopefully it will be easier.

Now tha I've got the carbon monoxide detector, I'm feeling no effects.  Perhaps my stove is okay. Chalk it up as one more anxiety transfer.

TOD: Perhaps later.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well, if Music Books count - My complete Henle (http://www.henle.de/index.cfm?lang=en&country=us) hardcover edition library that I splurged on while I was in college.  They were offering a special deal on the whole series - at least the piano works - and I took it.  It was set up as a sort of subscription.  You received three to five books every couple of weeks.  This way you did not have to drop a whole chunk of change at once.

Last night, I went through the first disc of six in the Doctor Who - Complete Third Series set.  Along with outtakes (funny) and deleted scenes (not funny), the first disc contains the second Doctor Who Christmas Special - The Runaway Bride, which introduces Brit comic actress Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.  She didn't stick with the Doctor for the Third Series, but will be returning for the Fourth Series, which should take the show in some interesting new and abrasive directions.

Also on the disc is a full-hour Doctor Who Confidential: Music and Monsters, detailing the efforts at staging a concert of Murray Gold's music for the series.  Reading about our esteemed BK's problems in producing his recent Schwartz/Menkin tribute, what executive producer Julie Gardner pulled off seems easy in comparison... even if she was putting on a show for an audience of 2000 at the Millenium Centre in Cardiff, Wales, with the performing talents of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales plus a chorus and gobs of stunt performers in costume and special effects and a screen for edited visuals from the television show.  And it was done as a fundraiser for Children in Need (http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/).  But Gardner had the clout of the BBC working for her, compared to the services that Cason and Adrianna gave our esteemed one.  Still, it's an interesting hour for putting things in perspective.

TOD:

Tough, I've many books, some have a greater personal value than others which have more monetary value.  Here's a few that I value the highest:

my two first editions of SHE by H. Rider Haggard.

A first edition of TARZAN OF THE APES by Edgar Rice Burroughs, with his autograph tipped in.

A signed limited edition of SCARAMOUCHE by Rafael Sabatini.

A doubly-signed copy of THE BRETHREN by Rider Haggard to John Hays Hammond.

A signed Limited Edition of BEAU GESTE by P.C. Wren.

A first of THE PRINCESS BRIDE by William Goldman.

My latest coup was discovering an American first of THE TRIUMPHS OF EUGENE VALMONT by Robert Barr (1906)...a somewhat seminal piece of detective fiction...for $3.50 in an old bookstore here in Kentucky.  I found only two copies online, one going for $150; the other $250.

Good morning, everyone.

TOD:
I have no first editions.

I do, however, have a great many books. I love to buy books, but hate to get rid of them. Given the cost of real estate these days, I am forced to purge what I can, which is always difficult for me.

Yes, BK's books are at the top of my Valued list. My Laurie King books aren't far behind, then Minette Walters, esp THE ICE HOUSE, which still mesmerizes me. In non-fiction, Philip Bailey's HOMEOPATHIC PSYCHOLOGY is one I'd dearly hate to lose.

Given the availability of used books on the Internet, maybe I don't hold onto books quite as tightly as I used to. Well, maybe, maybe not.

Today I am off to the dentist. A few weeks ago I had a dream about having my teeth drilled--a sort of MARATHON MAN dream. Most unseemly! The drilling was on the right side of my mouth. A few days later I noticed a rough spot right there on the right side. Upon further investigation, I found that I am missing part of at least one tooth. Ugh! We'll see what the dentist says. I seldom remember my dreams, and now, of course, I'm thinking that it wasn't just a dream.

Anyone else have experiences like this?

One of my most prized books is REMEMBERING MUSCLE BEACH personally signed by the author Harold Zinkin who was Mr. America 1945.

Another is my signed copy of Cal Bolder's (aka E. C. Craver) novel THE LAST REUNION ( a very, very good mystery thriller by the way!)

In fact any of my books that are signed by the author are among my favorites and most prized as they could not be replaced, in some cases.

Otherwise, the books I enjoy having around the most are the series of WHATEVER BECAME OF.....? books. I discovered them as a kid and bought each one as it was released, up until the series stopped in the mid 1980s or whenever it was.

That physique would stand him in great stead with the bodybuilders of today. When I look at lots of older musclemen of the 1940s and 1950s, they're just not as chisled all over or with as huge a definition as today's athletes. Not so with Harold.

Dropping by to say hello...

Off to finish a paper for a class I have been working on the last two weeks on the three elements in the development of Latin America....

Editing and now I have to finish figuring out how to do compound citations. I know how to do endlists and citation for anthropology and history in general. But why oh why does Latin American history have to be confusing....

I prefer the method of fly-by citation and endnotes. Much easier!

I, too, enjoyed "Chuck" last night. Of course, I've enjoyed every episode of "Chuck" and last night was no exception.

As for "Heroes":

SPOILER

I found the episode pretty rewarding with one exception.  I am absolutely appalled at the boring writing in the Maya-Silar sequences.  It's like these were written for 5-year-olds or something...or BY 5-year-olds.  The dialogue is SO trite and the performances are SO-O-O lugubrious that it nauseates me.  And they do go on and on and on.  I think this entire sub-arc is a misfire from the gitgo.  I just wish Silar were more interesting.

I recorded "Journeyman" for later viewing. I was tired.

Ethan Mordden, misinformation herself.  He's got a prodigious memory but that doesn't excuse his inability to check his facts.  I have signed editions of his earlier books before he crowned himself and Ken Mandelbaum high prtiests of the musical theatre around 1989 and both started snubbing old friends..

I have a couple of Stephen King first editions before they started printing the first editions in millions of copies: THE SHINING and SALEM'S LOT and many signed books and musical scores.

Good morning! The Steelers won by the hair on their chinny chin chin. Not a pretty picture. If the Steelers weren't playing so horrible I would say it was an entertaining game (like the ball stuck in the mud). I picked up my boys from Heinz field around 11:30ish last night. They were drenched ...

We stayed up late last night (this morning) and watched '300'. Everyone is sleeping the day away today. Ahhh, to be young again ... I'm trying to clean to 'decorate' for the holidays. The quest continues. Back to work tomorrow.

As for HEROES, yes, the Miya storyline was a bust from the get-go, and creator-producer-writer Tim Kring has said as much. I suspect we'll be seeing the last of her soon.

I disagree firmly about the character of Sylar. I find him dangerous and creepy even when he has little to do. He's a psychopath and just his presence for me adds a danger and a tension to a scene knowing that he's capable of any atrocity.

I can't read Harlequin romances, either, but I met two women in a screenwriting class some years ago who are both romance novelists. (They were attending the class to help with dialogue.) They weren't well-known, but were doing quite well with their books. Romance SELLS. I contacted the publisher they referred me to, but ugh!! I could NEVER write to those guidelines! Not even tongue-in-cheek!

I do want to read Little Pink Slips by Sally Koslow. She is a Fargo native who once worked for McCalls and she wrote a book based her experiences after Rosie bought the magazine. A fictional account.

It's waay too unreal for me! Everyone is gorgeous, strong, rich, etc.
Maybe my interest in quirky romances is a backlash against this Harlequin stuff.

But knowing the Vikes, they will choke in the playoffs

Good luck! It's fun when your team is in the playoffs. You played the Giants - Eli Manning - that was a sweet win. I think (and hope) it's Green Bay's year. Maybe Brett will retire (not that I want him to but I think its time).

The Steelers are playing really bad. It's hard to watch ... but I do. We had two easy games -- Jets and Dolphins -- we lost one, and barely escaped a loss last night. Sad. Next week we play Cincinnati and the following week it's New England. I'm preparing myself for two losses ... oh well ... hopefully I'll be wrong.

Same here....

To me it is much more fun writing a character that has elements of people you know. It makes them more real.

MattH, I would put up Mr. Vic Seipke (right) agains any of today's bodybuilders, but I know what you mean.

What a lot of these old timers have told me is that bodybuilding is so different now then it was in their day...so many of the guys now are way too big due to the drugs that have  became increasingly available since the late 60s...rather then creating a work of art, as some of the guys of old were doing, many of those now-a-days are trying to be bigger then the next guy.

Clarence Ross (below) is another fine example of one of the guys from the 1940s who, to me, had a perfect figure....

Clarence, and Harold, and Steve Reeves, and the others didn't have the fancy machinery and the drugs that they have today...and many of them didn't even have any equipment when they began...they just improvised with cans full of cement, or rocks, or pieces of furniture or whatever was on hand when they were starting out. It was a lot of work, but they sure did (and still do) enjoy it.

Some soaps in the past are far better written than many of the harlequins.

Soaps are hit and miss with me and some eras are better than others.

One soap I hated with a passion: PASSIONS!

Actually the time period that the soaps had the best writing was the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Some of them have gone down the tube since, big time!

Here's some good news for all Charlie Crews/"Life" fans:

NBC ANNOUNCES ITS FAITH IN "LIFE"

Universal Media Studios' Critically Acclaimed Freshman Drama Receives Full-Season Pick-Up

UNIVERSAL CITY - November 26, 2007 - The Universal Media Studios-produced drama "Life" has received a pickup order from NBC for an additional nine episodes of the critically acclaimed freshman series, it was announced today.

"We're thrilled to pick up 'Life,' which is produced by our own studio, for a full season," said Ben Silverman, Co-chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "We're so appreciative to the cast, producers and crew for delivering such a high-quality, compelling drama each week and we look forward to many more episodes to come."

Universal Media Studios President Katherine Pope said: "Rand Ravich, Far Shariat and their team have re-invented the cop show genre with 'Life.' With the pitch-perfect Damian Lewis at the center of a brilliant cast, each week this show has quietly built since its premiere into the little engine that could. We have every confidence that this drama will continue to impress audiences and critics with the quality of the acting and the writing."

According to Executive Producers Rand Ravich and Far Shariat, "We are fortunate and grateful that from the beginning, Katherine Pope and everyone at NBC shared our vision for the show. As Charlie Crews would say, this proves that you don't have to understand here to be here."

"Life" was one of the best-reviewed new shows of the 2007 fall season. The Los Angeles Times said when "Life" premiered: "NBC's new drama 'Life' is the sort of show that makes a person want to write things that will be picked up for ad copy. Like: 'If you only watch one new show this fall, watch 'Life'. Or: Terrific cast, terrific writing, and even when simply eating a pear, Damian Lewis sets a whole new standard for the broken hero genre."

"Life" is executive produced by Rand Ravich, Far Shariat and Dan Sackheim. It airs Wednesdays, (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on NBC and stars Damian Lewis as police detective Charlie Crews. Wrongfully imprisoned for 12 years for murders he didn't commit, Crews re-joins the force as soon as he's released, both because he loves the job, and because he needs to clear his name and find out who framed him. Co-starring as his partner, Dani Reese, who has demons of her own, is Sarah Shahi and Robin Weigert plays their no-nonsense boss, Lt. Karen Davis. Adam Arkin plays Crews' best friend and former cellmate, Ted Early, and Brooke Langton is Constance Griffiths, the attorney who won Crews' freedom and is now a D.A. who has developed a major crush on her former client.

In a special two part episode, airing Monday, December 3 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) and Wednesday, December 5 (10:00 PM, ET/PT), a critical piece of the Crews mystery is solved and he is finally able to unravel some of the secrets behind his being framed for the murder of his friend's family.

"Life" is averaging a 3.0 rating, 9 share in adults 18-49 and 8.0 million viewers overall for the season to date. With its November 14 telecast, "Life" retained its full adult 18-49 lead-in from "Bionic Woman" for the first time and attracted its biggest overall audience in four weeks. Season to date, "Life" is winning its competitive time period among men 18-34 opposite CBS's "CSI: Miami" and ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money."

Universal Media Studios, a division of NBC Universal, is one of the country's largest and most successful television production companies, responsible for more than 15 of television's most critically acclaimed, hit primetime series. Some of the series produced by the studio include the highly rated dramas, "House" and "Heroes," the Emmy Award-winning comedies "The Office" and "30 Rock"; and critically acclaimed cable hits "Battlestar Galactica" and "Monk" as well as the freshman hit dramas "Bionic Woman" and "Life." The studio also produces a variety of reality programming, the daytime drama "Passions" and NBC's late night programs "Saturday Night Live," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "Last Call with Carson Daly."

I've been E&T the past few days because, inasmuch as we live in an ancient-tech world of Dial-Up, being on-line ties up the telephone; I have been trying to keep the phone line reasonably free in case my daughter needs to blow off steam. Her mother (my-ex) died suddenly (but not unexpectedly) on Sunday, in California, and my daughter is at six and sevens about what to do. She really doesn't want to go back to CA, but feels she is expected to. (She does not handle internal conflict well.) If she is in luck, they will bring her Mom back East to be buried in the family plot in MD and that would spare her the trip west. I'm sure my ex left her affairs in complete chaos and there is no one back there with the sense to straighten them out. I would not be at all surprised if my sons didn't dip into joint funds to pay to bury her back there and then worry about finding a will and burial instructions later. They had best work fast, however, my eldest lived with his Mother and has no independent means of support. I gather my ex planned to leave her estate to the younger brother with the condition that he take care of the eldest but the wiser bother said "No Thanks!") Fortunately, I am emotionally detached from the passing so can try and offer my daughter some objective counsel.

One of the things I LOVED about the big regional post office by my parents' old house in Fairfax, VA, was that around the holidays they would set up special "Transaction Only" windows.  You had to have everything ready before you stepped up to the clerk: all your forms, everything addressed properly, and your method of payment already decided upon.  They would have other clerks checking with and on the people in line to see if they were ready.  And if it turned out you were not ready when you got to the window, they would make you get back in line to wait.. again!  :)  And if someone just needed stamps only, they would sometimes "break" the line in order to take care of those customers since those transactions took less than a minute.

We are weeks behind you.

Thanks.

names like de Rosas and all the other fun ones.

The three elements of development I am focusing on is with the time frame between 1500s and 1899:

1. Monocultural economy (farming and mining)
2. Colonial dependency : Spanish and Portugese colonies and manipulation and influence from Great Britain, France and some observation of American influence in the late 1800s.
3. Exceptional Men myth and how it relates to the image of the Caudillos

Hang in there and prod S. Woody to whip up some comfort food you love.

Well, the $4.00 12 lb turkeys make that chore easier. He over cooked cooked too many chestnuts, and he is finding inventive ways of incorporating mashed chestnuts - actually quite tasty!

Maybe I can get him to make some turkey and dumplings!

The area near the Utah-Arizona line is a place of strange and delightful rock formations. In the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, the renowned Wave formation is made of Jurassic-age Navajo sandstone -- 190-million-year-old sand dunes turned to rock. Stacked one atop another, the dunes calcified in vertical and horizontal layers.

Well, if we can count music...I have a copy of THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com/1933-FOSTER-HALL-REPRODUCTION-LIBRARY-Stephen-C_W0QQitemZ310000982473QQihZ021QQcategoryZ1452QQcmdZViewItem)!  Except that my set is #1000 of 1000 and this set available on eBay is #1002!! :o I had never found anything that said there were any more than the original 1000 copies.  Anyway, my set is complete and was NOT marked at all by the library where it was sent.  The outside is in pretty good condition but the contents are very fine.  No wear or marks. :D

When Antiques Roadshow came to Portland a few years ago, we had our first HHW gathering at the house of JMK and DW Betsy!  I came after the show taping (I was only seen in the background) and Jane (with DH Keith) and MBarnum came to Portland and we feasted!

REUTERS (http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSL2756248720071127)

Quote
A 7-year-old Sudanese student on Tuesday defended the British teacher accused of insulting Islam saying he had chosen to call a teddy bear Mohammad because it was his own name.

Gillian Gibbons, a 54-year-old teacher at the Unity High School in Khartoum, was arrested on Sunday after complaints from parents that she had insulted Islam's Prophet by allowing the bear to be named Mohammad. She is facing a third night in jail without being formally charged.

"The teacher asked me what I wanted to call the teddy," the boy said shyly, his voice barely rising above a whisper. "I said Mohammad. I named it after my name," he added.

Sitting in his garden wearing shorts, his family, who did not want their full names used, urged him to describe what had happened.

He said he was not thinking of Islam's Prophet when asked to suggest a name, adding most of the class agreed with his choice.

I'm absolutely delighted to read that info about LIFE though the news reports said it played opposite CSI: MIAMI which, of course, it doesn't (until this coming Monday anyway). It's CSI: NY that it is in competition with.

And the 9 episode pick-up won't mean much if the writers' strike continues, but I continue to have hope that all of this will get resolved and the season can continue.

He's famous for battling mythic Egyptian mummies on the big screen, but in real life Brendan Fraser has been fighting a different kind of curse - male pattern baldness.

The 38-year-old actor appears to have gone to rather extraordinary lengths to regain his once full head of tousled brown hair.

Gots lots of things viewed and cleared off the DVR. I began with the BONES repeat from last night. Repeat is right since it came from Season 1. It was a really good episode about pirates and treasure (loved the enthusiasm of the guys once they figured out it involved buccaneers).

Even though I have season 1 on DVD, I watched this since it was in HD.

Then, I switched back to MURDER SHE WROTE, Season 7, episode 4. This one guest starred Van Johnson, Bradford Dillman, Tony Geary, and the actor who played the bad guy on last night's JOURNEYMAN! Of course, he was playing a college student in the episode I watched today.

Count your blessings, BK--our closest branch is a "contract" post office, where you not only get the idiot customers, you get the equally idiotic owner, who has absolutely no clue about anything, augmented by her extreme nervousness (I've seen her spill her cash drawer more times than I can count).

TOD:  sentimentality wise, I have a wonderful signed first edition of The Silly Book by Stoo Hample, with a neat little drawing of Boodleheimer inside.  :)  The Silly Book was my favorite book when I was about 4 or 5, and it continues to be a family favorite with my kids.

Unfortunately an autographed edition of Will There Really Be a Morning? continues to elude me.  (That's a little joke for JR and me).

My condolences, der Brucer

Well, the edge is off of my daughter's dilemma - her Mom will be cremated back West and her ashes brought out to MD for burial. So, she can just sit and wait a while. (Of course they'd best hurry before they find a will that says no cremation!)

Daughter is already a bit miffed that her brother has decided that her Mom's jewelry should go to his daughter "because she's the only girl".

He was really interested in getting the "ruby and diamond ring" that she had - when DD informed her brother that the item in question was a heirloom ring I had given her for our engagement he's having second thoughts - it's tainted by having been mine).

And I do recollect once owning a Toshiba DVD player...I think it lasted a few months.

I've actually had really good luck with Toshibas--my first DVD player (back when they were $400, oy) was a Toshiba and it was one of the best we've ever had.  And my old laptop from the dark ages of the 80s is a Toshiba and still works--we just fired it up the other day for the kids to play with.  This had been working just great until a couple of hours ago, when I noticed it was beeping when I used the remote.  I had set the beep to "off" as soon as I had gotten it and gotten into the setup menu, so that struck me as strange.  So I tried to get back into setup and it wouldn't let me.  And now it is only reading standard-def DVDs--it says "not play" when I put in an HD DVD.  The customer service lady at Toshiba, who was very nice, was completely stumped.

I have been putting off getting this bridge the dentist said that I have needed for the past five years.  The dentist doesn't take payments, and my share is $1500.00.  Well, my employer (The State of W) has started a new flex medical program to help cover deductables, co-pays, prescriptions, etc.; and at pre-taxed savings.

The employee decides how much money they want in their account for the year, between $240.00 and $2400.00.  The total is divided by the number of paydays you have in the year; and that amount is taken out of each check from the gross amount of your salary.  The good thing is that as of January 1, of 2008 the entire total I have authorized becomes available to pay those things that aren't covered by my insurance.  So, in January I will get my bridge, and then next January, I can use it to pay for Lasik surgery.

At lunch time today, I went to the local Fred Meyer to look for a shirt or jacket or something in their big-and-tall section as a costume piece for the scenes where I play the sheriff's deputy.  I found some plaid fleece-lined shirt-like jackets ($42) that would work well, but they're not really the kind of thing that I would want to wear after the show is over. :-\ They were 50% off though but, read on...

Right next to those were some other jackets that were $58 ($14 more) but would also work for the show.  I really liked these jackets a lot and know that I would wear them when the show is over.  The great news is that they were also 50% off!  Only $29!  AND I had a Fred Meyer rewards coupon for an addtional 30% ($8.70) off!  AND I had three coupons with specific dollar amounts off anything that could all be used at the same time for a total of another $19 off...so with tax, I only had to pay $3.01 for this brand new $58 jacket!!  I LOVE it when this happens!! ;D

It's been quite a day. Not long after I got to work I got a call and ran back home for the delivery of my new freezer.  The cats were extremely interested in the change in their world and have been excited about it all day, lol.  Tonight I went for my first work out at Curves.  I took it slow, but made it through the entire thirty minute work out. I rushed home to be here for DWS, and when I tried to shut the garage door...the opener didn't work right. AWK! One more thing going wrong. I'll call the repair man tomorrow. Hopefully it's fixable. Otherwise I will be getting very strong, I really don't want to spring for a new opener.

Thanks Jane!  I have hopes the door can be fixed.  It took about half way around the circuit the first time before it started to feel good. It really is very easy to get to and quick to do, so I'm planning to keep up.  I barely looked at the measurments...yikes! At least there's lots of room to lose

Good Evening!

Back from dinner.  My friend Michael, who's a teacher at Columbia, called me up and asked if I wanted to head out for dinner, so...

We ended up down at Florent in the Meatpacking District, and one of my favorite places.  A fun, funky vibe, and a fun, funky clientele, and some very good food (basically French bistro).  I was in the mood for a burger, so I had a burger.  Michael had their Chicken Roulade which is stuffed with a couple of different cheeses and spinach.  It was gigantic!  It even surprised the server at how generous the portion was.  -And it surprised me too since that it's my usual stand-by there, and I've never been brought one that big.  In any case, we had some great meals.  We passed on dessert, but since we were by the West Village... ;)

As we were finishing up our meal, I noticed that conductor/music director Ted Sperling walked in.  He was seated at a table by himself.  I began to wonder who he was meeting for dinner, and I wondered if it was my friend Curtis - since I know Curtis likes Florent too.  Well, sure enough, a few minutes later, in walks Curtis.  :)

*DR elmore - Curtis says HI!  :)

So, as we walked through the West Village, we stopped at a couple of places:

Magnolia Bakery (http://magnoliabakery.com/) - Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Icing.  -And a box of their regular cupcakes for my roomies.

Birdbath (City Bakery) (http://buildagreenbakery.com/) - Green Energy Cookies (sort of Mexican-style butter/sugar cookie, with bits of jalapeño pepper in them - they're not "hot", they just a neat "bite"), Gingersnap Cookie.  -And I also found out that after 8:00, the cookies and other baked goods get marked down.  :)

L'Arte di Gelato (http://www.lartedelgelato.com/) - Two words: Butterscotch Gelato.  Sooooooo Good!

*And, yes, I will be heading back to the gym tomorrow.  ::)

You know JMK, everywhere I went, when I was looking at HD TVs they told me not to buy a Toshiba DVD player...the clerks liked Toshiba TVs, but thought they made crappy DVD players.

And I do recollect once owning a Toshiba DVD player...I think it lasted a few months.

Well, DR MBarnum, if you want an HD-DVD player, they're about the only game in town, at least for now. There IS a combination player that isn't able to do all the interactive features of a regulation HD-DVD player, but their price is prohibitive and functionality limited.

I began my evening with the Blu-ray disc of LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD. In the best DIE HARD tradition, it's an adrenaline rush from start to finish. True, no human body could withstand that much punishment and still be functional, but the action set pieces are just amazing, and in high def, well, it's knock your socks off cool.

This is another of Fox's DTS-Master Audio high def soundtracks, so my den was shaking from the surround sound effects.

Listening to a really fun recording of Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue and Concerto in F by Mantovani and Julius Katchen.  I'm sure there are better recordings (this one's in sparklingly sparkling monophonic sound - a gorgeous recording), but I don't know that I've had more fun listening to these two pieces.  But then again, I'm a Mantovani fan, and Katchen is a wonderful pianist.

I checked out the transfers of Mary, Queen of Scots and Anne Of The Thousand Days, a Universal two-fer - both look fine.  The problem with both films, of course, is that they are directed by the wholly untalented Charles Jarrott, the man who gave the world Lost Horizon, The Musical.
