Well, you've read the notes, the notes lacked both pith and vinegar and even a pith helmet, and how it is time for you to post until the pithy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VILIPEND!
-

Conrad Birdie - David Hyde Pierce
Mr. MacAfee - Clint Eastwood
Mrs. MacAfee - Oprah Winfrey

Kim MacAfee - Rachael Ray

Good morning, all! There are three band parts I most definitely ned to accomplish by 4 pm today, so I have to get to work.
I was happy to see so many of the sideline cast last night in THE CLOSER, and I was hoping the two officers that Brenda's mother looked after in the episode where there was a guard on Brenda would be back as well. As to the main plot, I loved the episode and the development of Wesley's character, but the conclusion was quite devastating. I guess I felt it was true to the series but a bit more of a downer than I expected from a holiday special.
Lab work at 9 am, so I've got two and a half hours to get more more finished.
-
The HHW version produced/directed by Guy Haines:
Rose Grant -- DR Jasmine, I mean, Jason
Albert Peterson -- DR Ron P.
Conrad Birdie -- DR der Brucer
Mr. MacAfee -- DR Laura
Mrs. MacAfee -- DR DingDaw
Mae Peterson -- DR MusicGuy
Hugo Peabody -- DR Jane
Kim MacAfee -- DR Jose

Well in fact on December 7, you may be jolted a bit when the Sun squares Uranus. My suggestion at that time is to be open to any messages you receive and act upon them.

Good morning crew.
We will be off soon to pack gift bags. I'm up and my morning ablutions are done. I've had my oatmeal with raisins and an apple, a cup of black coffee and a small glass of apple cider. The bowl and implements are washed, dried and returned to the cupboard and we are ready to go.

It has turned colder here in New York. Not as cold as in the Midwest but cold, nevertheless.

And on that note I will leave you.

If ever you would leave us, how could it be in winter?

Last night, we attended a 100th anniversary gala benefit for The MacDowell Colony (http://www.macdowellcolony.org/) at The Roseland Ballroom (http://roselandballroom.com/). The MacDowell Colony is a supportive residential retreat in New Hampshire for artists from all mediums. Famous "Fellows" have included Thornton Wilder, Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copland.
It was quite an evening! I'd never been inside the ballroom, which is very interesting. The food was lovely and the cater-waiters even lovelier. Some of the honorary co-chairs included Jane Alexander, Kevin Kline, Barbara Cook, Blythe Danner, and Sherie Rene Scott.
The program included actress Rachel Weisz reading from The Lovely Bones, Toni Morrison introducing a segment from an opera libretto she authored, Elaine Stritch reading a monologue by Spalding Gray, etc., etc.
It was all in all quite an exciting evening, but got to bed way too late for a school night!
-
Tuesday morning greetings! Working a half-day today, then taking some time off to do some holiday prep.
Looks like I missed a lot here on HHW last night, especially offering:
Vibes of peace and comfort to DR DakotaCelt.
Calming vibes to DR Jane.
Recovery vibes to DR Danise.
Congrats vibes to DR PennyO on not getting that job.

Hi Guys,
I couldn’t stay away but I won’t stay long. I’ll lurk more then I post because I just have to point and click. I also thought about the voice activated computer program but by the time I got it, the week would be over.
My thoughts and prayers are with Dakota Celt. There are no words one can say at a time like this to make it any better. Just know you are thought of and draw warmth from friends both near and far.
And I want to express my condolences to DR Jane and Bryan on Monkey.
I also wanted to give you all a link for the DVD players:

Ok, I’m going now but I will be watching.
Vibes to all! :)

And ***COPING VIBES*** right back at ya, DR Danise! :)

Good morning!
Much colder this morning and our overcast skies are back. I'm not sure if rain is in our future or not, but it's cold right now.

I got NAKED BOYS SINGING in the mail yesterday, so that's likely to be watched tonight, probably before prime time starts.

Guess I'll head down now to tidy up the bedroom (already cleaned the living room this morning), check the mail, and start thinking about what's for lunch.
WBBL.

This is my "this year's" greeting card for the holidays:
-
Oh, I did mean to comment about the scene between Brenda and her mother on THE CLOSER last night.
Utterly devastating and SO important. It's one thing to think your daughter arrests bad guys, but the world is often so NOT black and white like that, and Willie Ray for the first time got to see the awful pressures Brenda is under and the impossible decisions that have to be made on a daily basis for her.
And that sweet decision to become foster parents had me in tears.
Well done all around. I liked very much that it wasn't a traditional CHristmas story-themed episode.
-
This is a greeting card I received from a friend back in the late 1970s. To this day, it's the card I've most enjoyed:

Now, I'm REALLY going.

re: the question about SOAP OPERAS and what is currently on the air.
They are currently still airing new shows, (i believe ones that were already written).

I would be curious if anyone knew if they were going to use scab writers or have people like the exec producers write.

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314864,00.html)
LEWISVILLE, Texas — Lewisville police had to hop to it to catch a kangaroo who fled from a veterinarian's yard.
"Maynard" the red kangaroo is back at an animal hospital after a frolicking chase that was videotaped by a patrol car's camera.
Police joined animal control officers Sunday after getting a call about a kangaroo dashing around a neighborhood.
Their footage shows Maynard bouncing around while people chase the the 18-month-old, 3-foot-tall kangaroo.
Dr. Kyle Jones took Maynard home for the weekend so the animal could graze and run in the vet's back yard. A wooden gate blew open and Maynard got out.
The animal eventually will be placed with a zoo.
Maynard’s owner is looking for a new home for the exotic animal. Obviously, Maynard needs a little room to roam, and a good tall fence to keep him safe.
Well...it seems to me Maynard has no "bounce" VISA and should be deported!
(I'm sure TomOvOz will agree that Maynard belongs back in the bush!)

The Writer's Strike and Soap Operas
By Lynda Hirsch
Nov 10, 2007
Soap opera fans needn't get in a lather about the Writers Guild strike, which commenced this week. All of the soaps have enough material to go through January of next year. After that? Most likely others folks will be taking over the writing tasks, just as they did in the strike 20 years ago that lasted over 22 weeks.

Not my favorite episode, I have to admit, but I liked many parts of it, including the Christmas party at the store, and that final directive from the Air Force senior officer telling John that Chuck would soon be expendable and that he'd have to take him out.
Dramatic as it was, I don't believe that would EVER happen, though. Iit seems to be unrealistic blather (Hollywood phoniness) to make the military look bad, as is the general trend among writers with infantile grasps on reality.

DR MATT H-
THE HAPPY TIME is a delightful movie-Charming and engaging with a wonderful score by Dimitri Tiomkin and a very excellent Kurt Kasznar repeating his Broadway role.Add to that mix-Bobby Driscoll(suprisingly good)A young Linda Christian,Charles Boyer,Louis Jourdan,Marcel Dalio. It amost makes the thought of Winter disappear . It's really a Springlike Movie.
Thanks for making it happen
My pleasure. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
-
Deep sympathies to DR Dakota. When my father passed away, I was so grateful that he went in his sleep and was spared further suffering that I couldn't feel all that sad. Yes, I knew I was going to miss him, but his peace meant more to me than my feelings. Sounds like you have similar feelings about your father's passing.
-
I watched two MURDER SHE WROTE episodes this afternoon.
The first one had a large cast of Angela's cronies from her movie days: Margaret O'Brien, Jane Withers, Betty Garrett, Janet Blair, Marie Windsor along with Earl Holliman and Max Baer Jr.
-
"Heroes"
SPOILER
In general, it wasn't nearly as good as it should have been. Claire was irrational. The reappearance of Noah to "handle her" was a bit overwrought. The antics of Silar were too predictable/convenient for me to care. I don't think the character is that interesting.
The Niki-Micah segment was very good and moving, I thought, as was the final scene with Nathan, Parkman and Peter at the press conference.
I LOVED how Hiro handled Adam! It was INSPIRED!
I hope they can retool the writing to get this show back on track. Volume II, for the most part, is a bust.
-
I hope the kitties haven't all ordered wings by the time we get home!
At just what heat level do the kitties like their Buffalo wings? Just make sure they throw out the bones!
-
The second had another guest cast with many familiar faces: Roy Thinnes, Phyllis Newman, Gregg Henry, Max Wright.
I really enjoyed both of these episodes, among the best from Season Seven.
-
"Life"
SPOILER
A very interesting show with the always-terrific Damian Lewis as Charlie Crews. Part I of a two-parter didn't seem, at first, to be heading toward any kind of conflict that would merit a second part. But the writing is always deceptive and it was the ongoing subplot of Crews' private investigation into whose time "he" served for 12 years...and who really killed his friends...that never fails to hold my attention.
I'm totally anticipating tomorrow night's episode!
-
Next, I watched CHUCK. Good episode, a hilarious moment when the rocket went through Chuck's legs. The romantic attachment between Chuck and his handler is rather tedious at this point; I wish they'd just drop it and let them work together as teammates instead of all these jealousy and hurt feelings angles that get really old after awhile.
I did adore the cliffhanger with Chuck on the potential hit list.
-
Ah, DR Ron, but would you sacrifice your virtue for a meatball?
While I'm not a coloratura whose husband took French leave with the payroll, I think I could probably find work in a kitchen watching dishes or something.
-
So little to do and so much time....
-
No....strike that....
-
Wash the dishes? Just shatter 'em with your high E flat!
-
What am I, Gene Wilder?
-
HEROES had some great surprises including those who appeared to be "killed." Of course, on a show like HEROES, one never assumes ANYONE dies, but certainly I wouldn't shed a tear if one of the two who appeared dead really was. As for the other, I would be heartsick.
Chapter 2 went wrong by introducing some new characters who (so far) have added only filler to the show and not much else. I think Kristin Bell has potential to be something more than she's been given to do thus far, but Maya is a total washout for me, and I was disappointed that it wasn't she who was selected for immolation.
I couldn't disagree more strongly with DR Ron Pulliam about Sylar. I think he's a great villain, and since I know he's filming the STAR TREK movie now, wasn't expecting him to be much around the next chapter. That's why the start of Chapter 3 surprised me so much.
-
Gilda Radner?

There is Nip/Tuck! surgery.
Then there is Smash/Bash! surgery!

Not so golden years: Knots Landing actress Joan Van Ark's attempts to hold back the years with cosmetic procedures appears to have backfired
der Brucer
Actually, she looked like that back when they were filming the series. Proper lighting corrects so much - it's those flourescent lights that are a killer.

Nope, neither! BUT I do know that the complete second season of "Saturday Night Live" is now (or soon will be) available on DVD!!!!

As skanky as our boy Nathan has been looking lately, I won't miss him at all if he doesn't come back.
-
...But could DR MBarnum be my Conrad Birdie? ;)
Isn't he a little... old for you?
snark snark snark snark snark ;D
-
Condolances, DR DakotaCelt.

I know you think they're devine, but wings are a bit much.
I suppose you think I made a typo. Think again!
(But I swear I never sexually harrassed any of my cats!)
Chinese Cat grows wings
Granny Feng's tom cat has sprouted two hairy 4ins long wings, reports the Huashang News.
"At first, they were just two bumps, but they started to grow quickly, and after a month there were two wings," she said.
Feng, of Xianyang city, Shaanxi province, says the wings, which contain bones, make her pet look like a 'cat angel'.
Her explanation is that the cat sprouted the wings after being sexually harassed.
"A month ago, many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she said.
However, experts say the phenomenon is more likely down to a gene mutation, and say it shouldn't prevent the cat living a normal life.

Dakota, I just read the message about your father. I'm so sorry to hear that, but I'm glad that he is out of pain; I know the last few months have been so tough for him and for all of you. Vibes of comfort from Atlanta.

Some news just gleaned from VARIETY.
The original LAW & ORDER returns to NBC in January, and to its Wednesday at 10 p.m. slot. LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT will move over from USA to NBC and be shown at 9 p.m. CI will start with reruns that have been shown on USA (but not in HD) and then continue with other episodes not already aired on USA.
BIONIC WOMAN and LIFE will go an hiatus until the strike's resolution is either reached or obviously lasting longer than expected.
JERICHO will return to CBS in the Tuesday at 10 p.m. slot currently occupied by CANE. BIG BROTHER will be airing three shows a week (like its summer run). CBS plans to simply use reruns of its highly rated crime dramas since the reruns draw better than average ratings.

VARIETY's review of SWEENEY TODD is very, very positive. The show has been cut down from three hours to 117 minutes, but according to the review, the music now carries the show even more than in the theater. What's been cut are some book scenes and some verses of the songs which the reviewer thought didn't hurt the impact of the music at all. And all of the actors got positive marks for their acting and singing.
Makes me ever-more curious to see what the finished product looks like.

For long-time DRs: JMK, WEL, Jane amd François
ex DR Allan Wood (Bournemouth UK)from the old board, lost his partner to cancer on Saturday. John was a lovely man - DP Colin and I would never have met John nor Allan had it not been for the HHW World.
I am so sorry to hear this, but grateful indeed that Allan has remained in touch with friends made here.
-

Why not just put a cockroach into your salad?

Don;t get to attached. It is going on Hiatus. It will be replaced by a newsmagine type show
As it true of any currently running show with writers, one must expect "hiatus" in each and every case.
As for "Life", NBC picked it up for a complete season. I fully expect that contract will be honored regardless of when the strike ends.
-
BTW, both BOSTON LEGAL and LAW & ORDER: SVU are new episodes tonight.
-
Going to do a little computer work now and then head downstairs for more viewing.
WBBL.

Heartfelt condolances to DR DakotaCelt and her family.

Gadzooks, nine more posts (including this one) to finish this page. Hopefully, the next page won't be as gloomy.
Sigh.

DR Ron Pulliam, the DVD of LIFE arrived today. Thank you so much.
I'm down to three band parts now, and I think I will be ready for tomorrow night's rehearsal.
This afternoon, I had a wonderful phone call from London. Miss Kim Criswell invited me to an engagement party on Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street on Dec. 14. The party throwers apartment is the entire 14th floor of the building. I wonder if I'll need a blood test?
-
DR elmore3003, that party sounds like it should have its own zip code!

Just had to share. :)
Elmore, would it be possible (if not too tacky) to get me an autograph?? :D

I've been reading mostly positive reviews, too, but I'm not impressed with the singing, at all. :P On the official website, www.sweeneytoddmovie.com, there are sound clips (and I think the entire "A Little Priest") and there's no intensity, no variation, no "acting" in their voices...in my humble opinion. :-\ And they both just sound too young.

It's rather cold here tonight in the house of Linton. Glad we're escaping to warmer climes tomorrow.

DR George, I'd be happy to do that. You'll need to remind me because, with the frame of mind I'm in these days, I may forget the party!

I didn't think there was any acting in Madonna's voice on the EVITA soundtr, either. As to their ages, weare taling about London of the 1830s or 40s when I doubt the average lower-class life span was no more than 45 or 50!

With all those kitties huddled around you should be warm as can be!!!
I used to love visiting friends in Naples, Italy...those with cats, who also had kerosene heaters. The cats would get their little behinds as close to those heaters as they could.
When I would walk into a room the kitties would walk over to me for a schmooze....and they would be scalding hot to the touch.
My cats did that, too, but they never seemed to get "as hot" as did the kitties belonging to my other friends.
-

And according to my Futurama calendar, Happy Birthday, Wink Martindale! ;)

As to SWEENEY ages, isn't Johnny Depp four or five years older than Len Cariou was when he played the role?
-
For his next film musical, I hear that Johnny Depp wants to play Reno Sweeney. ;)
-

Cariou was 40 when he opened in "Sweeney Todd" in 1979. Depp is 44.

The cats would get their little behinds as close to those heaters as they could.
They all loved to curl up next to the gas space heater at the old house. Now that they have central heating, they have discovered that lying on top of a heating vent has the same effect. But it gets so hot I don't know how they stand it!
-
True...but we're also talking about Sondheim's music. ;)
Well, I can understand if Sondheim were unhappy with how they're acting his material but the "young" voices is a whole different matter. He just let Patti Lupone run roughshod over the score to GYPSY, and it's coming back!
-
I don't think there's any acting in Madonna's voice on any soundtrack. ;D
LOL!
-
Cariou was 40 when he opened in "Sweeney Todd" in 1979. Depp is 44.
Hmm...interesting, but irrelevant. Cariou had years of theatrical singing experience and (one assumes) vocal training and Depp has had none of either, by his own admission. For me, it's the quality of his voice that I find totally lacking and to a certain extent, disappointing. :-\
-
And according to my Futurama calendar, Happy Birthday, Wink Martindale! ;)
Sort of appropriate for DakotaCelt today.
Wink sang "Blackland Farmer".

Well, I'm waiting to judge how it all works in the film. I've ordered the soundtrack, but I've already seen the definitive SWEENEY TODD on stage several times. When I want to listen to the score I'll return to the original Broadway cast recording, both for the amaziing cast and the full score. The film's a whole different megilah and I hope that I will want to see it many times.

Absolutely! A lot of things get pre-judged before anyone acutally sees them. We won't truly know the tale of the movie musical of "Sweeney Todd" until we've experienced it.
-
The woman needs a better mindset. Who would want to do that to themself intentionally?
I doubt it is intentional. When work is a success everyone comments on how good the person looks.

Tomovoz, please send my condolences to ex DR Allan. I’m sure my imagination barely touches on the hurt he must feeling right now.

Not to mention her gigs with the Philharmonic where she delivered the best mumbled "Worst Pies in London" I've ever had the pleasure of trying to decipher.
-
Well, I can understand if Sondheim were unhappy with how they're acting his material ...
Seems Stephen is quite happy - in the TV promos they are using clips of him praising how well the film fits the score .

Lucky you!

Can y'all smell the caramel corn I'm making? Tomorrow night, after it's cooled, I'll package it in individual Santa-face serving bags for my AAUW friends to sell at a bake sale Thursday evening. It smells so good, something tells me that I'm going to have to make another batch for our family very soon.

I totally agree...the movie musical is a different animal than the stage musical. I want to love this movie...even with Johnny Depp...and I don't doubt that I will love the movie as a whole. It's just that I love musical theater recordings (and voices) and that one part of the whole (the soundtrack), which is the part that I would most easily be able to return to, is the one part that I know is lacking for me.

Thank you TCB.

Just a brief visit.
My father passed away this morning in his sleep. He is in a better place adn no longer in pain.
Dakota, my prayers are with you and your family. Be relieved that he is now at peace.
-
We lit the candles, the globe with the Chanukah bear inside played the Dreidel Song, and Sherlock received his gift. :)
That's it for our celebration, not even latkes cuz we are both on diets. Keith is doing better than I am. I stopped for Baskin Robbins chocolate ice cream on the way home from Costco today.
-
If they think having Sondheim in those promos is somehow going to get them an audience, boy are they stupid. No one of the core group of kids who go to movies knows who he is and could give a rat's ass what he has to say about the movie and his score.
The Hollywood Reporter also gave it a very positive review with the same sort of box-office caveats as Variety.
Looking forward to it.

I had a good time at Hollywood High, judging the oral presentations of senior projects on the performing arts. The pompous gasbag judge next to me felt it necessary to pontificate after everyone's presentation, often filling the room with the noxious fumes of his inanity. For example, he told one student who was doing his project on film history that The Sound Of Music was not a Golden Age film, having been made in the 70s. Say what? But it wasn't just that, it was everything. He said a professional director would never hire an actor for a stage show who couldn't project without being miked. I guess this guy hasn't been to a Broadway or touring show in the last five years, because as specious as it is, all actors in straight plays are miked these days - Bill Irwin, Kathleen Turner in Virginia Woolf, the entire company of Twelve Angry Men here at the Ahmanson, and every other professionally mounted straight play I've seen recently.
-
The Noxious Fumes Of His Inanity - that's the title of my next novel.
-
Page eight? This will NOT do. Let's get us a frenzy or three goin' on.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
-
After the presentations, I went to the Sizzler down the street. I've had a hankerin' for their salad bar, which I haven't visited in over fourteen years. Well, it was awful. I hate salad bars because one ends up eating five times what one would eat if he just ordered a regular meal. The food was mediocre, although the onion rings were okay.
-
I wonder what motion picture I shall watch this very evening. I've got several to choose from.
-
I am my own frenzy. Off to sit on the couch like so much fish.
-
BK, I saw a benefit concert over the weekend. It was terribly sloppy. If you had directed it, it would have been great.
-
And now for something completely different...I'm at work, ordering new, adult non-fiction books for the library and one that I just ordered is this: Gastroanomalies: Questionable Culinary Creations from the Golden Age of American Cookery (http://www.amazon.com/Gastroanomalies-Questionable-Culinary-Creations-American/dp/0307383075/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1196821837&sr=11-1), by James Lileks (http://www.lileks.com), author of The Gallery of Regrettable Food (http://www.amazon.com/Gallery-Regrettable-Food-James-Lileks/dp/0609607820/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b). Don't they sound appetizing?? ;)

Happy first night of Chanukah to all those who celebrate!

-
Thanks George & that book looks "interesting" ;D
-
I was good today. I finally booked doctor’s appointments & numerous routine tests, all to be done in the next 2½ weeks.
-
Laura, thank you for the vote of confidence.
-
I will say that directing benefits may "seem" easy, but it's really not, not if you care about what you're doing and its impact on an audience.
-
When I was growing up, I was very jealous when I found out that Chanukah was seven days and Christmas only one. I told my minister, who was also my mentor when I was in high school, about that; which gave him a great opportunity to discuss Twelfth Night with me and explain that the 12 Days of Christmas didn't actually start until Christmas. I was greatly relieved.
-
The topic from a few days ago was songs that make you cry. "Baby Mine" does it to me every time. The Betty Noyes' version from the movie and Rosemary Clooney's later version are perfection. In about 1974, Disney re-released "Dumbo," and everyone thinks of it as a light movie, but I knew and brought a box of Kleenex because I knew I'd weep. And I did. Still do.
"Where Are You Now That I Need You?" (Betty Hutton and k.d. lang's versions.) "Where Do I Go From Here?" by Liz Callaway does it to me from the first note. Peggy Lee's version of "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" does it. There's a harp concerto that also does it. DR MusicGuy's arrangement of "We Three Kings" never fails to reduce me to a puddle. (it's brilliant) An early Liza Minnelli rendition of "My Shining Hour" is a wonderful cry. Garland's version of a number of songs can wipe me out. "At Times Like These (a Girl Could Use a Dog)" and we know whose version is best.
Songs that make me smile:
Jeri Southern's "An Occasional Man": perfection!!!
Elaine Stritch doing "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?"
"Turkey Lurkey Time" makes me smile too.
Music Guy's version of "Hey Feller" from "Show Boat" is a stunner.
Music gets me very emotional!
Jason Graae, Peggy Lee, Jeri Southern, Guy Haines, and Liz Callaway can make me cry or laugh, and I envy their talents.
-
I will say that directing benefits may "seem" easy, but it's really not, not if you care about what you're doing and its impact on an audience.
That is something I've learned from following your experiences! Not that I ever really thought they were easy, but I didn't expect them to be so complicated and frustrating.
-
I doubt it is intentional. When work is a success everyone comments on how good the person looks.
When they're not muttering behind her back that she's had "work" done. And even good "work" changes a person's features.
-
TCB we received a cute email Chanukah card tonight. It was a charming old fashioned drawing of a young girl with her mother. The caption said "I want a Christmas tree for Chanukah".
-
BK, I saw a benefit concert over the weekend. It was terribly sloppy. If you had directed it, it would have been great.
If BK had had anything to do with it, it would have been brilliant. Bruce, you need to perform your magic (arranging, directing, performing) all over the world.
-
I wonder what motion picture I shall watch this very evening. I've got several to choose from.
I chose STARDUST. I really like STARDUST. Very much. It's a far better film than THE PRINCESS BRIDE, which I would liken it to.
-
True DR elmore, and I have seen plenty that changed the appearance for the better. I've seen some you would never know, they just look "rested"
-
DR Dakota, after such a courageous battle it is nice your father went so peacefully. My deepest condolences to you and your family, may you find comfort in the days to come.

DR MATT H-
What,in your valued opinion,is the best Hi-Def DVD to truly show off the medium?
-
DR Laura, you must buy the current issue of Believer Magazine (one of my faves.) It has a whole centerfold of Las Vegas carpet patterns, and an article about them too. I'm sure you'll recognize some of them!
-
Just a brief visit.
My father passed away this morning in his sleep. He is in a better place adn no longer in pain.
My deepest sympathy to you and your family, Dakota
-
Thank you one and all ((hugs)) The next several days will be rough.
I am at my parents house. Their dog is literally lost. She was vrey attached to my father and I have been paying her alot of attention since I got here. It is eerily quiet in the house, yet strangely I feel at peace. Yes, I do miss him terribly but I know he is not suffering. I am glad we honored his wish of letting him die at home. He did not want to die in the hospital. I truly think it would have been grumbles from the other side if he went to a hospital.
The day was not with out a few giggles...
Tom, wea re including Blackland Farmer in the funeral and rousing number for Reynolds (ND) Rockets! the prayer service is on friday and the funeral is on saturday.
-
It's time for me to leave work. Until later.
-
Happy Chanukah!
-
DR DakotaCelt, I hope the next several days bring back memories that make you smile. It will help.
-
"Try Me" (especially the revival version that BK did) makes me smile. Did I include "Star Carol" by Peggy Lee in the list that that makes me cry? It's so simple and sweet, and she does it so perfectly.
MusicGuy does a Christmas Carol Fantasy that thrills me to this day. Although we are no longer together, his music still just stuns me. What a gift.
Don Cornell's "Hold MY Hand" always makes me smile.
Oh, and Percy Faith's version of Theme from "A Summer Place" always brings a smile.

Someone at Believer Magazine must lurk here, because that whole casino carpet idea was MINE. MINE, I tell you!
-
And I will add my wishes for a Happy Chanukah to those who celebrate it -- and those who don't.
-
Good vibes and prayers for us all.
-
BK, I am not sure that anyone was directing the benefit show, except for the two obnoxious emcees who seemed to think they were the bee's knees.

If I'm not mistaken, you have a new photo of a very garish carpet pattern that should be posted.

Mr. Haines' version of "Terminal" can get to me. His version of "Evening Star" is glorious.

one of the funny moments came when we took out a bottle of coke and we could not get the cap off... we tried a knife to slit the plastic cap...
it brought back memories the night my dad and I accidently blew up a bottle of ginger ale.... The bottle of ginger ale covered the ceiling, floor, cupboards, counters...

As of tonight I am officially on the board of the Orpheum Theater Society. This is the 80th anniversary of the theater so it should be an interesting year. We had a great time a 30 minute meeting and 2 hours of talking a little wine and a lot of great conversation. It will be a fun group to be a part of.
-
Lengthy phone calls prevented me from being able to watch NAKED BOYS SINGING tonight. Instead, I watched the BONES episode that was going to be rerun tonight, only I watched the version on the DVD set. It was a good episode with a former friend of Jack Hodgins being killed. Stephen Fry guest starred in the episode.

DR MATT H-
What,in your valued opinion,is the best Hi-Def DVD to truly show off the medium?
I can only comment on Blu-ray, and only on the Blu-rays I've seen.
For live action: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III
For animation: CARS
But there are SO many worthy runners-up with picture window video and astounding high def audio: CASINO ROYALE, LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, CHICAGO, DREAMGIRLS, THE SEARCHERS, and, of course, PLANET EARTH (but only in the video realm; it's audio is good but not great). RATATOUILLE would be the worthiest animation runner-up.
I have read others who have said KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and/or BLACK HAWK DOWN are the best Blu-rays. I have the former but haven't gotten to it yet. I have no desire to ever see BLACK HAWK DOWN again (though it was an outstanding movie, just not my cup of tea more than once).
-
When did I have caramel corn?
-
I watched RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER in the remastered high def broadcast tonight. They have really cleaned this 1964 stop motion animation trifle up surprisingly well. You could certainly see lots of high def detail on the characters, and one creature made with a sock was so clear you could see the weave clearly in the sock.
They hadn't try to repurpose the sound much. Still sounded tinny. I didn't check to see if it was even in stereo.
-
The movie King Corn is at the Orpheum this Sunday. The film makers are swhoing it free.
-
I had planned to watch NCIS tonight, but it was a rerun from last season, the same as the box set that I watched a couple of months ago, so I didn't want to see it again. Instead, I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE episode. It had a good guest star line-up: Kevin McCarthy, Nannette Fabray, Maxwell Caulfield (gorgeous as usual), and Jerry Orbach once again playing Harry McGraw. When he and Angela work on a case together, it's always a good time.
-
BOSTON LEGAL tonight had Denny in trouble as usual needing Alan to bail him out, an interesting case for Shirley, and the writers are finally doing something with Lorainne other than making her give Alan a case of apoplexy.
Nice to see Loretta Devine on the show as a judge. As usual Henry Gibson played another judge. Stephen Culp played a gay lawyer tonight.
-
Finally got my scanner working tonight, so I wanted to see how the reduced size picture would look.
-
Perfect time for a Page Ten Dance, too! How ironic!
-
It was raining when I left the Orpheum tonight. It's now below freezing and although not raining is getting pretty slick out there. We're expecting snow on Thursday and again this weekend. I think we should be ok tomorrow, but it sounds like it's time to get milk and bread in the morining cause it may get ugly out there again.
Glad I got my ice all chopped and off the driveway today when the temps were in the 40s. I don't care if we get tons of snow and if it's cold, but god, I hate chopping ice off the driveway and sidewalk. Curves is going to think I gave up...truth is I've gotten more than a workout just cleaning up outside!
-
Heading down now to read a bit before I go to bed.
Good night!

Re: The Sweeney Todd movie.
I believe they dropped The Ballad of Sweeney Todd and all its reprises
-
DR DakotaCelt - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Please remember to take care of yourself over the next couple of days. It was nice hearing that your father went peacefully in his sleep, and that you're already laughing among the tears.
-
Good Evening!
A friend of mine is auditioning for an agent tomorrow, and he asked me to play for him. So, today, we ran through some of his music. One of the selections he'll be singing is "Father To Son" from Falsettos. It had been a while since I have listened to Falsettos, and I had forgotten just how touching that song is. And since Chris is a new father, he really gets it - and he really communicates it well too. Awwwww...
-
After my coaching session, I headed up to Border's to take advantage of the 40%-off DVD Boxed Sets sale/coupon... I can't wait to start re-watching the second season of "Saturday Night Live". :)
-
DR FJL - You mic is still on.
;D
-
Also Sweeney Todd did not run three hours on the stage. The tv version of the stage vesion which had some cuts in the show by the time the video taped it was 2 hrs 19 minutes. Which includes credits so I guess the running time is less. The concert version clocks in at 2hrs 12 minutes.
So with the cutting of all the Ballad of Sweeney Todds. And other songs that don't seem to be on the new cd like The Barber and His Wife, Wait, Ah Miss, Kiss Me, The Parlor Songs, the wigmaker scene; getting the running time down to under two hours seems possible
-
As for the "Sweeney Todd" movie... I'm really excited to see it. I've been purposely avoiding reading all the early reviews - and, frankly, I'm sort of surprised so many of them are out there already. I know the movie is going to be a totally different animal, a different experience from the stage musical, and I just want to go in and "let it happen".
-
I wonder if the academy will reinstate the music adaptation category with the success and some not of musicals. I think the last time it was used was when Victor/Victoria won. Then it went dormat. Although they did have a category for musical score comedy because it seemed Alan Menkan or any of the other Disney composers of animated films were always winnder when they had one category.
-
...Then after my Border's excursion, I met up with my friend, Michael. -OH! This is/was a different Michael, so maybe that's why it seems I'm talking about "Michael" all the time. Well.. In any case...
Illy had set up a new "display" on the second floor of the Time-Warner Center. They basically recycled an industrial shipping/storage container into a portable art/living-room/espresso-bar. So, we lined up for our free sample of espresso, and it turned they were giving out coupons for a free Chocolate Bouchon from the Bouchon Bakery up on the third floor. Coffee and Chocolate - It's a Good Thing. :)
-
I stand corrected. i just checked the last time they had a category with adaptation score as part of a category was in 1983 when Yentl won although it was a song score and its adaptation. the other two nominees were solely adaptation scores. The Sting II & Trading Places,

And since this Michael is a relative newcomer to NYC, I took him on a mini-tour of midtown. After wending our way along Central Park South and Fifth Avenue, we ended up back on Ninth Avenue at Empanada Mama (http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=0&restaurantid=6163) for dinner. Muy delicioso!

Re: The Sweeney Todd movie.

According to DR EvilTwin, who saw it Sunday with Christine Pedi, there are no choral numbers whatsoever. Christopher Lee was contracted to be one of those "ghosts," as they were in the original shooting script, but, he never even got onto the set.
-
Then after dinner, Michael headed back home, and I raced back over to Carnegie Hall. While we were walking around earlier, I noticed that Valery Gergiev was conducting his Kirov Orchestra tonight, and that the concert was opening with Stravinsky's "Les Noces" (The Wedding). I've always been intrigued by "Les Noces" due to its instrumentation: besides four vocal soloists, the "orchestra" consists of various percussion instruments and four(!) pianos. I have a few recordings of the piece, but I've never seen or heard it performed live. Well... When I got to the box office - right around 7:59! - they still had a couple of decent cheap-ish balcony seats left, so I bought myself a ticket, then head up the stairs(!) to the balcony to get settling into my seat.
What a very interesting - and I mean that in a good way - performance. "Les Noces" is based on rustic, folk Wedding Rituals. It is not "pretty" music. There is no lushness to the score. However, the folk origins of the music are always in evidence. And to my ears, it sounded like the soloists were instructed to color their voices toward the "raw" side of their vocal palate, very earthy. It worked for me - although, I suspected some people around me were hoping for some more beautiful singing. Well, since the second half of the concert consisted of the second act of Borodin's "Prince Igor", they had plenty of "beautiful singing" to look forward to.
I almost left after "Les Noces" since that's all I really wanted to hear, but since that would have made for a rather short (25 minutes) concert experience, I stayed for the second half. And I'm glad I did.
Valery Gergiev and his Kirov Orchestra are known for their virtuosic performances, with plenty of touches of "Russian abandon and passion" when called for. Well, they did not disappoint in that respect tonight. The second act of "Prince Igor" is the source of the popular "Polovtsian Dances" - which would later be re-fashioned for the musical, Kismet. The Dance sections were lush, rich and exciting, and in some of the rowdier numbers, literally ground-shaking and hair-raising. You could just sense the audience wanting to burst into applause as the last dance built to it's final notes.
The vocal soloists for Prince Igor were all impressive, however, I would have to give the soprano and tenor the vocal honors for the evening. I was also impressed with the clarinet player who was featured quite a bit. How he kept up with some of Maestro Gergiev's "racier" tempos was a wonder to hear.
-
And from the sublime to the ridiculous...
I made it home just in time to catch the season premiere of "The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency".
;D
-
DR Jane - Hmm... Latkes or Chocolate Ice Cream... That could actually be a hard decision to make. ;)
-
Through with movie viewing for the evening and am listening to the final volume of the Arthur Fiedler five volume set.
-
Will we never get to page eleven?
-
I'm sort of tired but not.
-
DR elmore - So, is Kim Criswell getting engaged? ;)
-
While I'm not a coloratura whose husband took French leave with the payroll, I think I could probably find work in a kitchen watching dishes or something.
Is that the plot to the sequel of "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat"?

In lieu of potato latkes tonight, Skip made some delicious gnocchi. I have trouble seeing this or any potato dish as a main course, so i just treated it as a very elaborate and tasty side dish.
-
IN LIEU OF LATKES - the name of my new book of potato recipes for a heart-healthy Hanukkah
-
Is it true about Kim?
I just knew it somehow
I must call her right up

Perhaps "The Man Who Mistook His wife for a Dish"
-
THE SUBJECT WAS LATKES - that should be the title of something or other
Or the Passover version: THE SUBJECT WAS MOSES

I've seen some you would never know, they just look "rested"
The morticians thank you for the compliment.

...And leftover gnocchi can be deep-fried for a wonderful snack. :)
-
Oh... I can't remember which store I was in today, but I heard a Christmas song I had never before:
"I Farted On Santa's Lap (Now Christmas Is Going To Stink For Me)"
WHY!?!?!?!?!? ;D
-
Leftover Gnocchi - that's the title of my next novel.
-
Now I want some gnocchi.
-
I am out of Diet Coke. Well, I have one rather deformed can left - I don't even know if it will open. Of course, I could have some cranberry juice instead.
-
Did we ever think we'd see a time when 300 seemed like a lite posting day?
-
Will we never get to page twelve?
-
I will single-handedly take us to page twelve.
-
I have trouble seeing this or any potato dish as a main course...
I agree - a main course should have lots of color - PEAS!

I think tonight's bedroom movie (which I'll start and finish over a succession of nights) will be The Trojan Horse, with Mr. Steve Reeves. I saw this peplum when it was released and I remember enjoying it.
-
So don't forget folks
That's what you get folks
For making gnocchi
-
There is a gloriously glorious long orchestral suite from Bernstein's Mass on this Fiedler CD, arranged by Irwin Kostal - wonderful music and I like it better than the singing.
-
I'm not ready to begin the notes.
-
I wonder if the notes are ready to begin me?
-
Bedroom movie? Trojan Horse? You saw whose peplum?
-
Peplum
Peplum who need peplum
Are the luckiest peplum in the world
-
Has "peplum" ever been a "word of the day?"
-
No and neither has mulpep.
-
Can we get to 400 at this late hour?
-
I would doubt it.
-
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
-
I'm willing to make twenty-five more posts.
-
"The Subject Was Noses" was a famous BRADY BUNCH episode.
-
Which family did you mean, Bill?
I took it to unquestionably mean the Hainsie-Kimlet family. What family do you think he might have meant?
-
When they're not muttering behind her back that she's had "work" done. And even good "work" changes a person's features.
True enough, but most comments come from those who either don't yet need the work, but would do anything necessary to keep age at bay, or those who want it desperately but can't afford it.

Is it true about Kim?
I just knew it somehow
I must call her right up
I can't talk to you now!

Goin' steady,
