Well, you've read the notes, the notes were elusive, and now it is time for you to post until the elusive cows come home.

I have only seen two Kaye film:
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, & The Court Jester that I remember with some fond memories.

I have a public domain copy of the Inspector General that I was given as a gift two Christmas' ago, but never watched. The PD films are a chore to watch.

White Christmas I watched in bits and pieces but can't be really called a Kaye film.

Surprisingly he really didn't make that many films,

Good morning, all!  When I was a kid I loved Danny Kaye, especially HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, and it was quite demoralizing to hear all the later stories about what a turd he could be.

I got the Tom Jones song from DR singingnymph, so I've spent the morning singing along. I sure my neighbors are not amused.  I think tonight I'll watch from the SHAKESPEARE RETOLD collection the MACBETH set in a restaurant (Macbeth is the head chef).  It should be an intereasting reflection of TOP CHEF. The other two play adaptations, which I'll watch next week, are MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and TAMING OF THE SHREW

Today is another day in Toyland, and I believe I will be working with a colleague today.  Beyond that, I have few plans.  My shopping is essentially finished, so I'm wrapping and waiting.  I do need to speak to the estate attorney about a form I he sent me yesterday, and I'd like to sign it and return it to him ASAP.

All dressed up and no place to go. Oy.

Good morning.

It's Saturday, December 15th.

And I haven't a clue what today will bring.  It's supposed to rain.  But it's an "stay-in" day, for the most part.  We may go to a local cemetery to put flowers on my father's grave.  (Trust me, that one will be the final word on "grave" you will hear from me...unless I figure out how to crop the photos I've taken so that I can post them here).

I really enjoyed "Ghost Whisperer" and "Moonlight" last night.  "Numbers" was pretty good, too, although I was on the computer through much of it trying figure out whether my mother has any cropping tools for photos.  Thus far, I've found nothing.

To answer a question posed by DR JoseSPiano two days ago, I DID bring my iPod Shuffle with me.  But it does NOT work.  I even bought a special charging unit at Brookstone in the Cincinnati airport.

It seemed to be doing the trick.  I even got a "green light" on my Shuffle unit.  But when I press play, I get alternating flashes of green and orange....and no sound.  So......

Albert Coleman, the conductor I assisted for 10 years, started his career in the states due to Danny Kaye. I think they had met in Europe, and when DK was looking for a conductor to tour North America with him, he chose Albert.

DK had to do some sort of paperwork for Albert to be able to work with him in Canada. Albert knew he wanted to move to the states and had planned to change his name to something easier to pronounce; he just hadn't chosen the name Albert Coleman yet. (I think the Coleman came from Ronald Coleman.)

So Danny Kaye made up a really bizarre name for Albert, and that's what he had to go by for the length of the tour. I am going to his memorial service tomorrow (he passed on recently at 97) and I'll see if his son remembers the name.

Any time Danny Kate was in Atlanta he would call Albert (always asking for him by that weird name) and they would get together. Unfortunately, I was never invited---I never even would know until after he'd returned from lunch so I didn't have the chance to beg him to go. And Albert had such a terrible memory (he never remembered my name or even the names of musicians who'd played with him for decades, but it was part of his charm) so even if I'd told him I was a fan it would have been a moot point.

Anyway, I never heard any bad stories about him. Now Sylvia Fine, well...he didn't seem to be quite as fond of her.

I spent too much time on "Ghost whisperer" trying to figure out where they lived! I had always thought the villasge/town was in the west but last night's episode had a reference to Philadelphia not being far away.  Then, Melinda's running around advising folk and, finally, communicating with ghosts on Christmas Eve in a nice red gossamer dress with NO COAT! And she never shows signs of a chill except once when Dee Wallace stone offers her tea. She leaves the haunted family's house to attend a party and end up in a snowfall in the village square, where she is indeed wearing a coat.  Pardon the expression, but wouldn't she freeze her frequently-exposed-in-this-show decolletage off?

I don't know why not!  I love White Christmas, and particularly love him in the film.  (I cannot imagine what it would be like if Fred Astaire or Donald O'Connor had played the part, since Danny was the third choice - Fred was never that funny, nor Donald that smooth a dancer.)

For those who enjoy trivia, here's an interesting bit from IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047673/trivia):

Quote
Although this movie musical has been a beloved favorite for decades -- especially at Christmastime -- there has never been an official "original soundtrack" album released in any form. Decca controlled the soundtrack rights, but Rosemary Clooney was under exclusive contract to Columbia, who would not allow her to appear on a competing label. As a result, Decca and Columbia each released their own White Christmas albums in 1954, although neither is an official soundtrack. Decca's album featured the movie cast minus Rosemary Clooney, with Peggy Lee taking over Clooney's part. Columbia's album had Rosemary Clooney singing 8 songs from the film. Both albums have been issued on CD in recent years.

So, which two artists has Bette Midler celebrated on her "Songbook" CDs?  Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee!

(Midler releasing a "Vera-Ellen Songbook" disc might take a bit more imagination.)

Absolutely favorite Danny Kaye movies are HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN and WHITE CHRISTMAS.

I know ANDERSEN has really little fact in its story of the famous writer, but those songs! I love every single one of them. I played that HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN LP (with TUBBY THE TUBA on the reverse side) until my parents told me they were sick of hearing it.

As for WHITE CHRISTMAS, it most definitely IS a Danny Kaye film. He has (for me) the best number in the show: "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" where his lilting singing and smooth dancing are simply amazing. Who knew he was capable of this kind of subtlety?

I don't care much for any of his Goldwyn 40s musicals including THE KID FROM BROOKLYN. I don't think they've aged particularly well, but, to be fair, I haven't watched any of them in many years.

THE COURT JESTER is a lot of fun, but I prefer the other two films I mentioned.

My turn to pull a Der Brucer!

There's an "interesting" bit in the New York Time's on-line Diner's Journal about a battle brewing between a PETA fraction group and milk processors (http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12/13/get-squeamish/#more-345).
Quote
Attorneys for the milk processors sent a letter to PETA in late November ordering them to stop selling items like mugs, mouse pads and barbecue aprons with the slogan “Got Pus? Milk does.” At issue wasn’t whether milk contains pus (we’ll get to that tricky question in a moment) but that PETA was profiting off of a federally registered trademark.

Leave it to the PETA radicals to find something fun about the foods we eat and drink.

But what threw me in the above quote was that PETA is raising money by selling barbecue aprons!  What exactly are they expecting us to slap down on our barbecues?   ::)

Interesting information about LOST going into the Thursday at 9 timeslot. Not really surprising, however, since Thursday night ad reveneues are the highest of any night of primetime, and ABC needed a "big gun" with a supply of fresh episodes to air there.

Of course, I would have watched it no matter which night and which time they decided to put it.

Der Brucer has Lost 3 on order - it should arrive sometime soon.  I've started running through the earlier seasons, just because I don't remember where we left off.

That's one thing that's frustrating about my work schedule - I never know whether I'm going to be working at night, running in conflict with what few shows I like to watch.  Combine this with der B having a very full televiewing schedule, and I run into real problems watching the stuff he's recorded for me, because he wants to watch the recorded stuff with me and there never seems to be the time.  I lost track of Lost last year, and had the same problem with Heroes this season.

(Fear not, I am not spoiler-phobic, so you guys can discuss away without ruining the shows for me.)

Speaking of the Decca film score WHITE CHRISTMAS LP, I think it's the album I was most disappointed in after searching for it for so many years. The recordings all sound very flat, and there are different arrangements from those used in the film.

What a shame that a true soundtrack album wasn't able to be released!

I kept up with the show weekely, and yet I still had surprises rewatching the episodes on the season 3 DVDs. I had forgotten some things, and other things didn't register at the time but registered greatly on rewatching since I knew certain valuable pieces of information later that I didn't know at the time of first viewing.

This is a show that definitely rewards multiple viewings. The shows are so densely packed with information that you simply cannot put it all together watching it one time.

Hmm...  I had thought "The Boy From Brooklyn" sounded familiar, and sure enough after some Googling...

The "original" play with music, "Danny and Sylvia" was one of those sleeper hits in DC a few years ago.  And, yes, Brian Childers won a Helen Hayes for his portrayal of Danny Kaye.  -His co-star at the time, Janine Gulisano, was also quite good in the piece.  IIRC, it was just a two-hander.  So... I'm guessing Brian - who I do sort of know from auditions and such - just wanted to continue his love affair, as it were, with Danny Kaye.  -And if you go to his website, well, you can definitely read all about it and him.  ;)

*I did come across one strange pre-review in the Tolucan Times (http://tolucantimes.com/index.php?news=2745).

-Oh, and, yes, the Gala Opening is tonight.  Not last night.  ;)

BK - How did you end up going to see the show anyway?  Did "The Danny Kaye Story" catch your eye?  Or do you know someone involved with the production?

And do you happen to know if the Music Director, Randy Booth, is the Randy Booth.  -Who was with the tour of Beauty & The Beast from day one to day last.

Anyway, I never heard any bad stories about him. Now Sylvia Fine, well...he didn't seem to be quite as fond of her.

Those are the stories I heard.  She was rather controlling & it was difficult for DK to cope with, or to stand up to her.

I also know the little girl who played his daughter in 5 LITTLE PENNIES absolutely adored him.

Danny Kaye's show was a regular drop-by for a little band I like to call Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.  My brother-in-law's neighbor in Encino was a floor director for the show, IIRC.

We had an evening of technical difficulties last night at Cinderella.  Someone had screwed with the board and the levels for the pre-record were horrible until about halfway through the first act.  Unfortunately I'm on stage so my attempts to be subtle about the inadequate levels were met with complete ignorance (which is, after all, bliss) until finally the choreographer noticed my gesticulations (which the board op really should have seen quite easily) and told her about it.  The smoke machines also went off for absolutely no reason during the first stepmother/sister scene, bathing the entire theater in a fine (and smelly) mist.  We decided at intermission we were doing "Cinderella in The Scottish Play".  ;)

I called the store that embarrassed me my sending my gift unwrapped.  It turns out they didn't forget to wrap it, the box was too big to wrap & then ship.  They just neglected to call me and inquire what I wanted done.

They probably did me a favor, sometimes ignorance is bliss.  The package was shipped to the hostess of the baby shower and has been wrapped hassle free on my part.

Now all I need is for the pass to California to be clear in January so I can watch the mother to be open the gift.

I did something really dumb and made mounds of mulch before I left for LA, despite the fact that I'm allergic to leaf mold and there were wet leaves and I was in too big of a hurry to track down my mask.

So the whole time in LA my sinuses and lungs were burning. Then to make matters worse, I went hiking up and down the steep Hollywood Hills, breathing very heavily and making things worse.

By the time I got home, I was really having trouble breathing but then I was able to take some stuff I had from my last sinus cold thingy. (I seem to get them once or twice a year...)

Ever since then, it's been going from my lungs, up to my head, back to my lungs, etc. Very annoying, and I turned down two party invites and probably another tonight, just in case it is something contagious.

But at least it's not bad enough to keep me from doing holiday prep work.

And it's raining here. Hooray!

No, since the producers knew that the show wasn't coming back until February of 2008, they spent the extra time on preproduction and were only eight completed shows into their next season when the strike hit. From the bonus features in the DVD set, I'm sure you saw that at any given time, they're working on multiple episodes of the series at the same time, but the completion of some of those episodes used to come dangerously close to air date.

I have spent all afternoon with the Blu-ray edition of LOST. Yes, it's as spectacular as I imagined it would be. The show is broadcast in HD on ABC in 720p, but these Blu-rays are encoded at the higher resolution 1080p, so they're technically superior to the network broadcast (also with much less compression than is used by cable and dish companies transmitting signals). And the sound is uncompressed 5.1, so it's much more sonically imposing. In short, the best TV series I've ever seen on a recorded medium. I still have a few episodes left to watch and the bonus features, some of which were not on the sDVD set.

Re Danny Kaye

I remember a really funny bit in a film; the scene was set in a large elegant drawing room with a large ceramic platter balanced on  a ledge over a doorway; when the band hit certain rhythms, the plate would start to walk across the ledge; the villain entered and stood under the doorway and Kaye proceeded to try and get the plate to fall and KO the baddie.

On the Riviera perhaps?

There were two KCET (PBS, LA) specials called Musical Comedy Tonight (1979) and Musical Comedy Tonight II (1981) which were hosted (and scripted) by Sylvia Fine.

The later had Danny doing bits from Lady in the Dark.

They must have re-run the later because I think I saw it with Woody.

I bet that would be interesting. A novel idea and most curious... :)

It has been a low-keyed day here in Johnston SC.  The big event of the day was going to the P-K Restaurant for lunch and having burgers and fries.

It started raining around 3 p.m. and hasn't let up yet.  It's also much, much cooler.

Yes, I think "winter" has caught up to me here on the east coast.

I wouldn't even mind "seeing" a little snow (that's a "little", mind you) just for fun.

How was your trip Ron?

Well...if you mean the flight on Wednesday, then it went off without a hitch save a slight scheduling delay out of Cinicinnati that had me arriving in Columbia SC about 50 minutes later than we were supposed to arrive.

Friday, we made a trip north to Spartanburg SC to visit with a cousin, have a nice lunch and place flowers on several gravesites.  We stopped to shop on the way back (Bed, Bath & Beyond and CostCo).

But...the "trip" continues through December 26th.  Many new and exotic things are bound to happen between now and then.

I'll keep the forum updated as I recover from and reflect upon them.

Heard  this today at the grocery store:

Rusty Chevrolet by Da Yoopers.... (Think Jingle Bells)

1. DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW
IN MY RUSTY CHEVROLET
DOWN THE ROAD I GO
SLIDING ALL THE WAY
I NEED NEW PISTON RINGS
I NEED SOME NEW SNOW TIRES
MY CAR IS HELD TOGETHER
BY A PIECE OF CHICKEN WIRE
CHORUS:
RUST AND SMOKE THE HEATER'S BROKE
THE DOOR JUST BLEW AWAY
I LIGHT A MATCH TO SEE THE DASH
AND THEN I START TO PRAY
THE FRAME IS BENT THE MUFFLER WENT
THE RADIO IT'S OK
OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO DRIVE
THIS RUSTY CHEVROLET

2. I WENT TO THE IGA
TO GET SOME CHRISTMAS CHEER
I JUST PASSED UP MY LEFT FRONT TIRE
AND ITS GETTING HARD TO STEER
SKIDDING DOWN THE HIGHWAY
RIGHT PAST THE NEGAUNEE COPS
I HAD TO DRAG MY SWAMPERS
TO GET THE CAR TO STOP

(REPEAT CHORUS)

3. BOUNCING THROUGH THE SNOWDRIFTS
IN A BIG BLUE CLOUD OF SMOKE
PEOPLE LAUGH AS I DRIVE BY
I WONDER WHAT'S THE JOKE
I GOT TO GET TO SHOPKO
TO PICK UP THE LAYAWAY
CAUSE SANTA CLAUS IS COMING SOON
IN HIS BIG OLD RUSTY SLEIGH

(REPEAT CHORUS)

It's cold and wet here.
Had snow earlier.  Now, we're having rain. Rain.  Rain.
Tonight, we will freeze so that by the time I head out for work tomorrow, I'll be confronted by a snowy, icy mess.

Some cousins remain around the kitchen table swilling beers, including ButtMonkey Ale.

Mum's relaxed in her chair, thankful for the day's festivities, but worn out.

I'm worn out too, and may even take a little old lay-me-down before I have to go out and salt the driveways again. . .

I believe you mean the 1948 musical A SONG IS BORN, with Kaye and Virginia Mayo.  If memory serves me correctly, one of the baddies in that scene was Ben Weldon, Keith’s cousin.

The film was a remake of the 1941 film BALL OF FIRE with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.  As much as I love Danny Kaye, I prefer the original film.

Well I made my way to the mall to get a haircut today. BOY! Was that a mistake. I literally drove around the parking lot for 30 minutes before finding a parking place.  But, I really wanted to get my haircut, so I kept going. The Humane Society was there with animals.  They tried to talk me into adopting 2 cats...they were about 12 years old and had been together for 8 years.  I just can't imagine adding two more cats, especially the older ones....plus one was named Boo Radley.  I couldn't have 2 Boos. SWW that is a lot of cans!  Last week as we walked into the market we passed school kids collecting canned goods.  When we left the store with a bag full of cans there was no one there to give them too.  Keith remembered we had passed a different group of students selling trees and collecting cans.  We caught them just as they were leaving.

In other news...

I ended up meeting Carlos, Teresa and Alexandra down at Bryant Park after they had seen The Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  The original plan was for Alexandra to go ice-skating, but when we saw that the line to get into the skate rental pavilion was about a 100 people deep - and at least an hour and a half wait - we just took some pictures, then headed to lunch.

*Alexandra was willing to wait the hour and a half, but when she saw that the line was outside in the cold, she said that it was OK that we go to lunch instead.  ;)

Although you can barely tell now, there were literally DOZENS of cookies on the island in the kitchen today; I had requested "no gifts, bring a batch of cookies instead" and friends and family did.   ;D

I should now go and watch a dvd. . .with a strong cuppa joe in my hands.

Carlos was in the mood for some Cuban food and wanted to go one of his old stand-bys, Victor's Cafe.  So we hailed a cab, and headed up to Victor's Cafe.

We had a good meal, but I could tell that Carlos was a bit put off by the re-vamping and "nouveau-ing" of their menu.  -He's been going there for that past 25 years whenever he came into town for business.  Oh, and I guess I should mention that Carlos is also from Cuba, so...  Truth be told, I was a little underwhelmed with the meal too.  The food was good, the portions were adequate, but the prices seemed a bit high for the homestyle cooking.  We were definitely paying for the presentation, and the midtown rents.  The service was also a bit spotty, although they did react quickly to Alexandra's spilled Shirley Temple.

Must now watch a Bollywood movie...this one just came in the mail today...the new Punjabi drama MITTI WAJAAN MAARDI (2007), one of several fairly recent films out the the Punjab area of India starring popular singer Harbhajan Maan

I have seen all of his films now, and have noticed that the same actors seem to be in most of these movies.

After lunch, we made a brief stop into The Hershey's Store.  -I still wonder why Hershey's didn't opt for a store with more square footage?!?!?  Then we headed across the street to M&M's World for those few minutes.  Then we walked past the Times Square Toys'R'Us.  There was a line outside to get in, so... -I suggested they go back around 7:00 when everyone is at dinner and/or getting ready to head to a show.

Then it was back to their hotel for lots of hugs and goodbyes.  I may see them tomorrow morning before they train back down to Virginia, but I have a feeling Uncle Jojo may be sleeping in tomorrow morning.  ;)

Evening all!   I love all the NYC pictures!

I only intended to go for a little while today but got caught in the Christmas rush.  I left at about nine and didn't get home until five!

There was a very thin dog in the yard as I was leaving so I pulled back into the driveway.  I was going to try to catch it.  I went back into the house and got a can of dog food.

Despite my best efforts I couldn't catch it.  At least it did manage to eat the can of food before it ran so it had a good meal--at least today.

I was hoping that it would come back this evening but I didn't see it.

I hate it when this happens.  I don't know what to do.  Like you, Cilla, I can' t take in another animal but I don't want to call the pound.

Sigh.

I began my evening of entertainment by watching the two part season ending episodes of LOST.

I'm sure I got the same thrill watching this in Blu-ray that DR Ron Pulliam got watching HEROES in HD some months ago. The sharpness and dimensionality are so breathtaking, and LOST has the added attraction of all that Hawaiian location photography so the greens and blues are blinding.

Next I watched the bonus features on LOST. The Blu-ray contains two features not on the standard definition release of LOST.

The most important is called ACCESS: GRANTED which is a series of twenty questions about the mysteries of LOST with comments from the two executive producers along with additional comments from four LOST panelists. This does sort out known information about the conundrums of the show but also sets out secrets that are yet to be told and mysteries that have yet to be solved.

The other exclusive Blu-ray feature was called BLU-PRINTS which was five featurettes on sets that were created for this season's shows including Ben's house, the Hydra and Looking Glass Stations. Interesting tours of each of the five sites mentioned.

All of the bonus features either new to Blu-ray or ported over from the sDVD were in high definition, too, an added bonus.

I concluded my evening with HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX on Blu-ray. Looked stupendous, of course, but it's such a dark film and so much of it is a bit demoralizing that I suspect I won't be watching this one as frequently as I have the other four. CHAMBER OF SECRETS and GOBLET OF FIRE are most definitely my two favorites.

They certainly did cast this new one well for the new characters.

Loved Rosemary Clooney's joke on the commentary about her W I D E backside and the diamond clip.

Today I flew to Pomona and back for a meeting, and this is what I saw:

Look! Snow! The airport curb was as close as I got to it.

Look! Autumn Leaves!!

And I'm sure you are all asking:  "Dear Reader Laura, wasn't there any carpet in the airports?"

Of course!

I didn't dare take a photo of the police officer with the rifle drawn or the police dog on a leash.

Oh yeah, I sing now in the Saint Augustine classic choir in Culver City. I'm not religious, but I miss being in a choir & one of my best friends directs this one.

And if you all are inclined to send thoughts, prayers, vibes, etc., the woman who sat beside me on the plane to California was going over because her 13-year-old grandson accidentally shot a BB into her 6-year-old son's eye. He may lose his eye.

Danise, I hope that dog comes back. If you can feed him a bit more and get him healthy the Humane Society will find him a very good home, I am sure.

Well if Cinderella was visiting Elmore's relatives last night (i.e., the Macbeths), tonight she was over in Rod Serling territory.  A completely weird night--the fog machine went off again, this time during the overture, and belched so much mist out you literally could not see a thing for the first several minutes of Act I.  Don't know if that threw off the actors, but there were a lot of missed lines tonight--pages full of them.  And our stage manager, who calls the sound cues (including the pre-records), is a *very* literal person.  If she does not get her exact dialogue cue, she simply does not call the sound cue.  Which of course meant for some awkward silences.  :)

Bollywood film # 1 is done...now for # two...DUSHMUN (1971) starring Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, and the lovely Meena Kumari (shortly before she passed away from a few too many nips at that bottle, I am sad to say).

OH!!!!!

While waiting for the F Train downtown at the 57th Street Station - and it was quite a wait (four uptown trains came and went in the interim), there was a gentleman who got off one of the uptown trains.  Singing.  He was actually singing kind of loudly, but it wasn't like he was yelling.  He was just singing with a lot of passion and happiness...

My Asian Man
My Asian Man
Oh, how I love my Asian Man
He treats me right
And cooks my ham
Oh, how I love my Asian Man

:)

I wasn't sure if he was serenading me - or anyone else on the platform - or if he was just singing to sing.  He actually went through about 12 verses before he finally boarded another uptown train.  In any case, he brought a smile to my face - and to everyone else's face on the platform who were waiting for the downtown train.

And another moment that made me "smile" today...

-Oh, look, the banners on that building... What do they say?
Looks like "Carnegie Hall"
-Really? I didn't think it was that big a building.
Well, maybe the banners are just like an ad for Carnegie Hall.
-Probably.  What does it say in the guidebook?
Where are we?
-57th Street and 7th Avenue.
Well, it says that that's where Carnegie Hall is.
-I guess that must be it then.
Can we go to Starbucks now?

:)

My big brother would make up verses now & then for a song about himself...the Happy Homosexual. I have a verse in it too. We were at junior college together for a while & ran in the same crowds. One day I walked up whilst he was singing his song & he shouted, "It's me little sister!"

Then he sang:

She's a happy heterosexual!
She loves her brother who is gay!
Cos when he's a happy homosexual,
Everyone knows there's a possible lay!

If all (well most) of DR Jose's  posts since he arrived in New York as a resident, were to be published - what a wonderful love story between a man and a city it would be.

Thank you Jose for sharing so much of your world with us all at HHW.
