Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tasty and churro-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're eating some churros right now and gaily singing Christmas songs.

And the word of the day is: CAUSERIE!

Finally.

You know, it doesn't feel that long ago, we were all around the table having pancakes. :)

El Pollo Loco has churros & flan. They're good, but not fantastic. But then it is fast food. Costco has churros too. :)

I need me a CHURRO!

I think there's a Pollo Loco around here - maybe I'll get a churro there.
-
Welcome five GUESTS - any of you have a churro on you?
-
Alas, no.
-
Oh wait...silly me. THOSE guests. dum-dee-doo
-
Well, I suppose I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment - but not before asking the key question:
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
Is that a churro in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

I so enjoyed the uTube Brain clip of Here on Earth I even posted a comment.

Last night there was the usual crash of overturned trash cans as Fletcher checked the kitchen for snacks. Suddenly he came prancing into the den and flopped on his pillow to enjoy his new found treasure - the Brussels' Sprout stalk!

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. That is all.
-
Good morning, all! I've been through the first three discs of BROTHERS & SISTERS and I want the second half of the series ASAP! I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would. I also watched last night THE TAMING OF THE SHREW with Rufus Sewell as Petruchio in the SHAKESPEARE RETOLD set, and it was mighty strange. Funny but mighty strange. Twiggy plays Katherine's mother and it was wonderful to see her but it was quite a peculiar adaptation by Sally Wainwright that got me yearning for Taylor, Burton, York, and Zeffirelli.
DR MattH, the Farrelly Brothers show their sweet side in OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE, based on Peter Farrelly's autobiographical novel. The book and flm adaptation have major plot differences but I liked them both immensely.
DJ Jose, weren't you the Christmas elf last night! Great photos.
DR tomovoz, I see that are I signed off, Fosca passed on. I'm so sorry.
I know I'm missing a comment on something posted last night, but I have other fish to fry. I need to go up to my doctor's this morning for a new lab kit of things to do at home to complete my physical exam. I've lost the other, so if anyone receives in the post a stool sample from me, it's purely accidental and not critical. After that, I have some time in Toyland, then a visit with friends on the East Side, and then a reading of BUSKER ALLEY at the York at 7 pm.

I like THE TWO JAKES just because it's fun to see Van Dyke Parks. I agree that the score is not his best work, but beleive it or not, there was sheet music of the theme published. I have a copy, signd by VDP himself when we started working together on the score for "Ociee Nash": "Finally we get to make music together! Fondly, ..." etc Awwwwww....
I also like GOIN' SOUTH because of his score.

I'm going to go the the mix today for the Gold Museum documentary I cut a few months ago.
I recommended the composer without ever having worked with him and he's been very discreet about giving us previews of his music, as in...nothing! It's the first time I decided to use someone because I had a good feeling about him, but he's a friend of a friend and had left a lucrative dental practice to write music for films, and in that way I am an "enabler" and want to help people in some way to accomplish what is in their hearts to do, art-wise.
He had a nice demo, but that's very different from underscoring. I've worked with many composers who thought their music should always be center stage, wich doesn't work for a film like this. This is often the mark of inexperience---meaning they haven't been beaten into submission enough to understand that the score should serve the purposes of the film.
I'm hoping this guy is already there, but it's still a bit scary. And I hope to report that I was pleasantly surprised and pleased!

One of the stories I heard about our conductor yesterday was from a concert I worked at Lake Lanier. He stepped on the podium, touched the mike and got a big shock, which startled him.

This is the song they used as walkout music after the memorial service. Albert used to conduct the orchestras for Floyd Cramer, Boots Randolph and Chet Atkins, so their songs are in the medley.
It started out sounding all sentimental and then when the drums kicked in everyone cracked up and it was a great upbeat way to end the service. Albert would have loved that!

Do any of you musical gurus on the site have experience with the Yamaha Motif ES6? I have the opportunity to get a lightly used one (only by a grandmother playing hymns on the weekend, LOL).
DR JMK - The Yamaha Motif series have started to become the keyboard of choice in a lot of the pits here in New York. In fact, we used them on Lestat, and I believe A Chorus Line will be switching over to them for the tour. Only the 88-key models use their "balanced hammer effect" keyboard, but their standard keyboard action does feature "initial touch" and "aftertouch" capabilities. *I almost took mine with me from the Palace last spring since no one really knew who they belonged to while we striking the pit. It turned out that Yamaha provided them for us. -And got them back.
The ES6 has 61 keys. (The ES7 has 71, and the ES8 has 88.) There are a ton of sounds on board, as well as the capability to add your own, and/or link it to another sound source/module. It can sequence, sample, arpeggiate and loop up a storm.
If you can swing a good deal on it, I'd say go for it. Just check out Yamama's (http://www.yamahasynth.com/products/motifes/index.html) own site for the specs (and manuals - and it's quite a manual!).

And speaking of Christmas Shopping...
I actually stayed in bed this morning for a bit just planning out the next couple of days in my head. I realized that I have to buy the presents for my nieces and nephew. However, since I'm flying down Thursday, I think I may just take care of their present-shopping down there - which would also free up some space in my luggage. I also want to get John some sort of construction/erector set, and god knows what that would look like going through the x-ray machines at the airport. So... I want to scout out a few things this afternoon, and I guess I'll just take it from there. If anything, I can always ship a box down on Wednesday if I come across the "perfect gift".

Jose thanks for the link to Olvera Street. I have many fond memories of going there as a child, and later.
There was a great taquito place on the left as you entered (I think that was the entrance closet to the train station). They had the thin, thick green sauce you can’t find anymore. The taquito’s were cooked to perfection.

That doesn't sound the same, I'll have to check it out. This sounds more like the incredible chip sauce we used to get at Robozo's on Pico Blvd. It is long gone & I wish I had thought to ask Andy, the owner, for the recipe. He would have given it to me as I was a favorite customer from the time I was 11. Such a nice man and such great food.

Thanks, DR Edi! We had a couple of setbacks this year. I prefer all white lights, but when Rob was little he wanted colored lights so we did both. This tree is just a couple of years old and came pre-lit with all white. We've been adding a few colored lights, which this year refused to work. Rob pronounced that he's now mature enough to appreciate all while lights. Yesterday, the last ornament I put on was his Starship Enterprise, which is supposed to light up when you attach it to a light socket. The pre-lit tree sockets are too small, so Richard pronounced that the world won't end if the Enterprise doesn't blink this year.

Mr Ike Barinholtz is gone from MAD Tv this year, and all they will say if you ask is: He moved on to other things.
I have not liked ANY of the new shows this season. They are doing it more like a stage show at - I think - The Music Box Theater in L.A. And the format is suffering for it, IMHO.
There are several new male cast members.....but NO IKE is something I don't like!
-
Well... I'm almost out the door...
The Tomatillo Salsa really isn't "hot". It has a little bit of heat, but it's definitley not "hot". Well, at least not to me - said the Flapapino who ordered a "Three Pepper" dish last week at a Thai place and thought it ranked maybe "One and a Half Peppers". ;) Seriously, I'd qualify that Tomatillo Salsa as "mild". But your mileage may differ. ;)

DR elmore - If you happen to talk with Charlotte today, and want to arrange a movie and time for Wednesday, just go ahead. I have a feeling that Wednesday will be quite the "action-packed" day for me, and knowing that I have to be some place at some time will help me plan my day better.
-
Ciao-ders for niao-ders!
Laters...
-
Thanks, DR JRand! I hope you have a good one too, my Birthday Twin!
Safari so goody. ;D
-
I just realized that I totally forgot to go to an party at the home of one of my office mates that occurred last night.
-
Edi, how do I find the "hidden track" in the DVD?
We viewed the disc in the computer, not the DVD player. Even though I'm technically adept at most things I don't know much about "Easter Eggs" or "Hidden Tracks" so I need some enlightenment.
-
DR TCB - There is a new 2-Disc Edition of 300 that is now available, so the first release single disk may be on sale. It will have this logo on the front if it is the one with Gerard Butt-ler.

TOD
hard to choose one because I am not sure when the Jack Nicholson persona took over the roles he started to play. I have always thought he has been the weakest link in his films perhaps since Terms of Endearment. But it may have started with The Shining. There were a couple of good films inbetween, but since 1983 I don't think there has been one film I have seen with him (I haven't see them all) that I was never convinced he was playing the character and not himself.
-
I just got an e-mail asking if I was interested in 40% off tickets to Sondheim's SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH PLAYBILL. It must be a reimagining of the original.
-
Well DR TCB.....at least it wasn't that show that went around the Midwest a couple of seasons ago....the wrestling version:
Sunday In the Park With Gorgeous George.
-
One week from today is Christmas Eve.
-
Re my posting from yesterday about the song titles.
I been trying to use what versions I have (not necessarily the originals) and what I didn't have I downloaded from Itunes.
I am trying to do some research for an article I am planning to write.
They are all Academy Award winning or nominated songs.
I will search out the ones people posted yesterday and I believe Tom said he had some of them. Thanks BTW.
There is one that I didn't post yesterday and that was The Wishing Doll from Hawaii. It wasn't even sung in the film. (More talked) and I believe it ran less than a minute maybe a little more on screen. It was never released on the Hawaii soundtrack despite being a Julie Andrews "vocal"
-
DR MBARNUM will you still get your present even though you weren't in attendance at the party?
-
DR MS I think that DR JMK may have this recording....I know he was looking for it and may have found it.
-
DR Michael. Susan Sackett's book "Hollywood Sings' will give you virtually everything you need to know about the oscar nominated songs.(it goes up to 1993).
-
I'm missing "Wishing Doll" too.
-
Am I the only one here who actually saw Gorgeous George wrestle? I saw a match between he and Freddie Blassie, and at the end, GG lost, and they cut his hair off (an obvious wig). While I wrote about many of the wrestling matches I saw in Kritzer Time, I don't think I included that one.
-
When Ginny said she was probably going to stay home today, because of her cold, I thought, "What a baby!"
So here I am at home, having coughed the whole night. I believe this could be the THE COLD FROM PLANET X.
-
Or as Dick Lane, wrestling's greatest announcer, would have said - "Whoa, Nellie!"
-
Will we never get to page seven?
-
I packaged up four things and will either attempt to ship them this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
-
Though I love, love, love the score to Hawaii (and The Wishing Doll, such as it is), I find it reprehensible that the Academy chose to nominate that as best song, when, as Michael correctly points out, it was never really sung in the film, while it overlooked perhaps the most gorgeous ballad of the 60s, Maybe September by Percy Faith/Livingston & Evans, from, ironically, The Oscar. Rant over.
There is a Percy Faith recording of My Wishing Doll, Michael. I'm not sure I ever heard a vocal version, though I believe I have the sheet music somewhere.
-
TOD:
Little Shop of Horrors
The Wild Ride
Five Easy Pieces
Chinatown
Goin' South
I prefer Jack in the musical version of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
-
I'm thinking today may be another halibut day - very low cal and very tasty. And maybe Gelson's will have their cheesy potatoes - not very low cal but very tasty.
-
I may try to get a haircut this week, too.
-
"A World That Never Was" was never released commercially.
"Strange Are The Ways Of Love" from "The Stepmother" may not have been either.
"The Facts of life" was sung by Steve & Eydie - it was not released as a single by them.
-
I remember when Frank Rich wrote about SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE so often that there was an affectionate joke going around referring to SUNDAY IN THE TIMES WITH GEORGE.
-
MMMM JMK has the sheet music (and thus also the Lyrics!) - and he is a musician who has recorded commercially. MMMMMMM .
There's a market for the song! With or without a Bossa Nova touch!
-
DR MBARNUM will you still get your present even though you weren't in attendance at the party?
DR MBarnum is cruising for a stocking full of coal.

Do You See What I See?
This is the view from my chair in our family room:
Oh, Ginny, your family room looks wonderful. I have no decorations up this year. I didn't even put a wreath on the door. I m not a total Scrooge. I gave the kids their new beds for the bedroom last night for their Christmas presents. Naturally, they both loved one of them and ignored the other.
-
I remember when Frank Rich wrote about SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE so often that there was an affectionate joke going around referring to SUNDAY IN THE TIMES WITH GEORGE.
Well I may have nominated it for the Pulitzer, but I think it won because of Frank Rich.

At least in the NY Metro area, PBS is airing Weill's Mahagonny with Patti and Audra tonight.
That is the first good reason I have ever heard for NOT living in New York.
-
And of course Babs is also heard on the Jack track.
-
There are a number of Mexican oriented grocery chains in SoCal.
Who would have thought ;)

Thank you DRs for all the support. Magnus is receiving much love.

Oh... And for a bit more info on the Motifs... as well as Lestat... and Elton John's own keyboard player and programmer... And to see my name in print ;)...

But your mileage may differ. ;)
Keith and I find our mouths burning while Bryan looks at us stating the food isn't hot as all. While not to the extent Bryan does, Craig also likes food on the hot side. I would bet our mileage definitely differs from yours ;D
-
I gave the kids their new beds for the bedroom last night for their Christmas presents. Naturally, they both loved one of them and ignored the other.
Cute.:)
Feel better soon vibes!

Magnus is receiving much love.
I don't doubt that at all and I'm sure he is giving you & Colin as much comfort as he is giving you.
-
Break time is over.
-
Because of the big snow storm yesterday (around 40cms) the schools were all closed today (not exactly sure why, but they were).
-
DR Edi will no doubt be pleased to know that I do have Mr Coleman and the Atlanta Pops "Hooked on Country" (single).
(of course that's no doubt not really surprising)
-
It is only Monday.
-
Was Conductor Coleman responsible for ALL the Hooked On.... LP's?
-
No. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Louis Clark) was the Hooked on Classics
Hooked On Big Bands was the FRank barber Orch.
-
There were also the "Turned On Broadway" albums.
and a movie one by MECO. (Pop goes To the Movies)
-
Thanks DR TOMovOZ.....

Pleasure.

Surely you jest--5:01 on Christmas Eve is last minute shopping. ;D
Not when you need a present for Wednesday night! :o

I saw him on television eons ago. And, of course, many wrestlers after him adopted and exaggerated his style and manner as their "character."
My father took us to many wrestling matches in Charlotte, and I remember once even walking down the autograph line (only the good guys signed autographs) and getting signatures from all of the big guns on this side of the country.
-
Ah, the best laid plans . . . .
I had wanted to watch Miss Fannie Brice tonight, but, alas, the Blu-ray of UNDERDOG did indeed arrive today, and since it streets tomorrow, well, I know what I'll be watching tonight.
-
I got my shopping done relatively painlessly (except in the old bank account), and got back home by 2:30. I was pleased not to be out too long even though it is a gorgeous December day.
-
When I got back home, I began watching the last 35 minutes of HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. Though I wasn't blown away by the HD transfer last night, today it seemed sharper and more impressive. Of course, there were a few brighter scenes today than in the first 2/3 of the movie.
-
Then I watched some bonus features on the disc (all in standard definition, alas). I watched the deleted/extended scenes, all of which were understandably cut.
I watched how they filmed the underwater scenes for Task #2 and how they animated the dragon for Task #1.
These featurettes were in the sDVD set I've had for over a year, but I had never bothered to watch them.
-
Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No gay characters, and they weren't in the previews for tomorrow either.
-
Ergh. Why did Renee Fleming have to do her concert in my hometown on a Monday? Better question: why did she wait til I moved away? *wink*
The universe is laughing at me, I know it.

Thank you, DR TCB! I wish everyone here could come over to have a cup of hot chocolate with us in that room.
PS - hope you're feeling better. Not only did I stay home today, I'm already excused from work for tomorrow, too.
-
A busy day.
I just finished last night's posts. TOMOVOZ, I am so sorry to hear the news. Hugs to you and Colin.
-
I've been doing quite a bit of work on the musical I'm mentoring, then picked up a couple of packages, and am now making halibut.
-
Someday, Kaiser will call. And how thrilling that moment will be, when I'm their next interviewee!
-
Am I the only one here who actually saw Gorgeous George wrestle? I saw a match between he and Freddie Blassie, and at the end, GG lost, and they cut his hair off (an obvious wig). While I wrote about many of the wrestling matches I saw in Kritzer Time, I don't think I included that one.
Do you mean in person? I never attended any matches, but I watched wrestling on TV for a couple years, thanks to you! My favorites were Tricky Ricky Starr and Haystack Calhoun.
-
Wouldn't the lime sting?
Yes.
-
Thanks, DR Edi! We had a couple of setbacks this year.
Sounds like the "boys" are all grown up, now! LOL!
-
DR Michael. Susan Sackett's book "Hollywood Sings' will give you virtually everything you need to know about the oscar nominated songs.(it goes up to 1993).
Thanks for the heads up.
I still wouldn't mind having the recordings. ;-)
-
Edi, how do I find the "hidden track" in the DVD?
You just let it play until it goes back to the main menu...
-
Heading down now to take the skies with UNDERDOG.
WBBL.
-
I thought page 8 would never get here.
-
DR Edi will no doubt be pleased to know that I do have Mr Coleman and the Atlanta Pops "Hooked on Country" (single).
(of course that's no doubt not really surprising)
No way!!!!!!!
OK...that's just too scary. I don't even have that!
I had the album, but it's pretty beat up. That sound clip must have been taken from vinyl because you can hear the pops of the Pops. The agent advertises the CD on their website---I wonder if they just transferred the whole album?
Tomovoz, the depth of your music libray never ceases to astound me!
-
Was Conductor Coleman responsible for ALL the Hooked On.... LP's?
No, he was just latching onto a craze. But good for him to be able to keep up with current pop music when he was in his '70's!
-
OK, so I'm back from the mix.
After only having one brief meeting with this composer to spot the film, it was a little nerve-wracking going into this without even any demos, just arriving at the mix with the music files delivered to the mixer.
BUT, I have to say, he did an unbelievably fantastic job. I couldn't be happier! Everything was perfect for the film, the music ducked when it needed to---we really didn't have to do a whole lot to even adjust the levels.
There were a lot of different feels required here: comical, serious, epic, poignant and this guy hit them all and the music flowed seamlessly and the themes were beautiful.
I am so happy and relieved!!!
-
Sounds like the "boys" are all grown up, now! LOL!
Yes, but neither of them likes to have tradition messed with. You should have heard the reaction the year I suggested pork roast for Christmas dinner.

DR Edi, I'm glad to hear your work day went so well.

Thanks! I'm at home (I called in sick) and I feel better than yesterday, but my voice doesn't sound better. I'll be fine enough by tomorrow to go to work...I'm not missing our annual holiday potluck! And Barbara (the selector of juvenile material) is retiring, so she preferred to have her retirement party combined with the holiday party. I just need to think of something to bring for the potluck. We're also having a gift exchange, so I should get something for that, although there are several people who don't participate in that, so I don't have to. We'll see.

DR Miss Karen - Congrats on getting your Fifth and Final Paper turned in for the semester!
-And I'm guessing you switched over to the pine-scented homegrown and organic stuff? ;D
-
Enough celebrating - time to go clean some bathrooms busily, dust the furniture quickly, and vacumn all the dust bunnies away just in time for Boo-Key and a mother-in-law to arrive one day earlier than expected ... YIKES!!
-
So, who else is going to follow "Clash of the Choirs" this week? The Cincinnati media are covering Nick Lachey's choir heavily.
-
Good Evening!
DONE!
With my Christmas shopping that is! :)
Of course, I say that now, but at least I'm done with the "must buy for" list. The MoMA store turned out to be quite the treasure trove of potential Christmas gifts for my nieces and nephew. I just kept picking up this $5.00 thing, then an $8.00 that, and then a $12.00 whatchamacallit, etc., etc., etc. And once I'm down in Virginia, I'll divvy them up accordingly. I even came across the perfect ;) gift for my Mom. I also investigated the line of MUJI office accessories, and I'll most likely pick up a few of those items for myself after the holidays.

Yes -- and with a hint of cinnamon... 8)

I need to be kidnapped just before new year's.

So, who else is going to follow "Clash of the Choirs" this week? The Cincinnati media are covering Nick Lachey's choir heavily.
I'm very curious about this show. It's either one of those things that will be simply brilliant - and heartfelt - or it could easily turn into a group version of "American Idol". I'll be DVRing tonight's episode, and just take it from there.
-
For a day in which I had little to do, I sure haven't stopped doing. Just back from enduring the hideous lines at the post office, but got the five packages shipped, and I hope that will be it, at least until after Christmas.
-
Yes -- and with a hint of cinnamon... 8)
Pine and cinnamon?
I don't even think that Yankee Candle makes that scent. ;)
-
I'm listening to a Vince Mendoza CD - it's pretty terrific - it's his charts and a sax player and is gorgeous, like the one he did with Stefano di Battista.
-
Oh, and there were going to be some Ginnys staking books endlessly but I ran out of Christmas days -- although they could be for tomorrow ..
18 Ginnys stacking library books endlessly
-
The Mendoza thing is heartening, because between the Battista and then this arriving today, I'd played another Mendoza CD that I didn't like at all, but it was a very specific sort of concept (Flamenco/Latin), with lots of hand-clapping, and it just wasn't for me. But this one today, which is called Symphonic is spectacular.

What a day! What a day!
(for an auto da fe? NAY!)
Up at 6:30 a.m. Breakfasted, loaded the car, picked up my aunt and cousin and we headed north to Greenville.
Lots of shopping. Glorious weather but a bit on the chilly side. Some revisiting of past residences and taking of photographs of same.
My mom and I are having spaghetti for dinner.

I think it is a lovely idea. A lot of people are creeped-out by the little boxes that I keep my babies' ashes in on the bookcase. Unfortunately, these are a little out of my price range.

DR Edisaurus, happy to hear that your instincts were rewarded magnificently! :)

Busy, busy day for me as I shopped and shopped and shopped. Bought clothes, I did. Lots of clothes I can wash and wear casually.
I had taken stock of my situation when packing for this trip and realized I have few "casual" clothes. I packed mostly shirts and trousers I also wear to work.
I needed a makeover, and I got one. Hooray.

DR JoseSPiano - I could look it up, but I'm lazy! Who is playing tonight at Carnegie Hall?

Well! Then I guess he is gorgeous.
-
And that HHWers is the 25 Days of Christmas HHW style ...
-
DR JoseSPiano - I could look it up, but I'm lazy! Who is playing tonight at Carnegie Hall?
Pianist, Yefim Bronfman. This is part of his "Perspective" series - or something like that. It's going to be quite the "big" recital. He's ending the first half of his recital with Schumann's "Fantasy in C", and the second half consists of Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit", and Balakirev's "Islamey". I suspect I will be spending most of the recital with my mouth open agape in dispbelief. I believe the theme of this concert is "Musical Fantasies".
He was supposed to premiere a new work tonight, but the composer/composition was not ready in time. So, there's speculation that he might add an addition piece to tonight's recital. We shall see.
-
DR Miss Karen - did you include yourself? I have to go back and re-read. If not, you're going to have to keep expanding it! :) It wouldn't be a HHW Christmas without you in it!

I asked before, but is anyone going to hear the Irish Tenor (Mark Forrest) at Carnegie Hall on Sunday?
Does anyone know what the building looks like?

What is the tradional Christmas meal?
Well, this year it will be Honey Baked Ham on Christmas Eve. Because Rob and his girlfriend will leave early Christmas morning for her family's in Michigan, we're having our big celebration the night before. On Christmas Day, DH Richard and I will go to 10am mass in Cincinnati and from there, who knows?
-
Well, I had best walk the dog and get some food in me.
Cheers, all!
Is walk the dog, also a euphemism?

Well, you are welcome to drop into my sister's house. She always has plenty of food.

Well, thank you, DR TCB. We've been invited to drop into the home of some friends whose kids have flown the coop and whose visits will overlap just 24 hours. Their son was a student of DH Richard's and their younger daughter was a pretty good friend of Rob's. The mom is a long-time friend of mine. In fact, she's on the local school board and made sure that she was the board member who handed Rob his high school diploma.

Bruce, I have never watch wrestling live, and hope never to do so. I asked Keith, and he never saw Gorgeous George. He did however see Freddie Blassie, Mr. Moto, & the Haystack twins-Calhoon & Muldoon. He made monthly treks to the Olympic Auditorium in '61 & '62.

When we lived in Pennsylvania and Hulk Hogan was a big star with his own cartoon show, Keith took them to see him in a match. In fact, we flew home from L.A. on the same plane as HH adding extra excitement to the event. I figured if Keith could watch wrestling when he was young, he could take his boys to see a match while I stayed home. ;D
Bryan and Craig had a great time while Keith was fascinated with the crowds. He couldn’t get over the fact the entire audience seemed to believe it was all for real.

I thought the middle school was extreme when Craig accidentally took his swiss army knife to school. Instead of handing it to a person of authority he stuck it in his locker, thinking it a safe place for it. Only someone saw he had it and turned him in. If he had kept it in his pocket no one would have known. He was not arrested though the police were called.
-
I have a question. Who has NetFlix?
I do...why?
-
Craig was suspended, I can't remember how many days. The principle apologized for having to follow the rules. The police had the sense to talk to Craig & issue a warning. You can bet he never took anything to school again that could be considered a weapon, not that we know of anyway.
-

At the same middle school, during art class, Bryan reached up into a box on a shelf. I can't recall the reason he went into the box, just that there were sharp art tools in there & he cut himself. I was called to take him for stitches.
It remember my initial response when I received the call on my fairly new car phone. OH SHIT! ;D I had a lot of calls from the schools that year, the main reason I got the car phone. ::)

Do, do, do - the coprophiliac's favorite Gershwin song. I haven't stopped all day. I guess I'll try to go to this cabaret thing, since it doesn't start until eight-thirty. Hopefully it won't last too long.

Like Kathy Griffin, I'm going straight to hell department: I donate my services to retirement homes around this time of year. I was playing at a place today and one of the residents was this surly old guy who just kept spewing insult after insult as I played, something I'd really never encountered before (most of these elderly people are more than grateful that someone comes to play for them). So after one of his tirades I looked right at him and said, "If you're going to keep being mean, I'm simply going to leave. I don't need to be here." He looked at me like no one had ever had the gumption to talk back to him in all of his 80-plus years. He turned into a model audience member instantly. It was kind of funny.
-

A fork can do some real damage to a person if you use it as a weapon. Have they stopped allowing students to eat with a fork?
-
LOL-TCB. I really do understand the concept of not permitting weapons in school. The concept of eating utensils or even a swiss army knife with all of its gadgets doesn't seem like a weapon. Best the students learn the consequences at a younger age than when they are older & a suspension would appear on their school record.
That little girl must of been scared, I really feel bad for her. I bet her parents are rather miffed.
-
My friend Josh just called, asking if I wanted to go to the "Messiah Sing Along (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=860)" at the Washington Center. I said that I hadn't planned on it, but I'd go...it's not a "date," though. He has the score and I think they've had scores to either borrow or buy in past performances. When I was in high school, we sang "The Hallelujah Chorus" but nothing else from it. I think it'll be fun. I haven't sung real choral music (and sacred choral music, at that) since I was in college.
-
We'll see what my voice sounds like, though! ;)
-
As for miffed parents. Fortunately we were traveling during a school break, with Craig, when his friends found the door to the elementary school open and couldn't resist roller blading in the halls. For that offense they were carted off to the police station. Every single parent that showed up to collect their child yelled at the police for their stupidity.
I doubt at that age I could have resisted those smooth halls. They didn't do any damage to the school.

Last night there was the usual crash of overturned trash cans as Fletcher checked the kitchen for snacks. Suddenly he came prancing into the den and flopped on his pillow to enjoy his new found treasure - the Brussels' Sprout stalk!

Just watched most of the show about selecting the best choir (I think it's called Clash of the Choirs?) I guess this will be running all week. I'm hoping this one becomes a regular series, only I hope they drop the idea that each choir represents a city if it becomes a regular series. I can see cities ganging up in the phone voting.

Jane - we've had NetFlix since right around the time Richard retired (summer 2003). I can't imagine going back to having to go to a store for movies to watch.

Well, okay, but she makes one heck of a potato salad...... and it only a couple thousand miles out of your way.
My niece Laura, who's coming from Illinois this weekend, makes great potato salad, too. We're hoping she'll make some to go with our ham.

Forgot? Or were you distracted by your neighbor across the street raking the leaves in his front yard?
Even in the winter months he can still be seen, on occasion, working in his yard sans shirt. It's like having Colt Studios right across the street.

Now I'm in the mood for potato salad. I'm being good though. Keith is popping popcorn and I will not have any. Loosing weight is my way of consoling myself that I can't bake or make any fudge.
I really thought by now I would be able to do either, however my wrist and arm are not agreeing with me. Best to listen than to have long term damage cuz I did too much too soon.
I should be fine by Valentine's Day. :)

Ginny, take care of yourself.

I received a package in the mail so well wrapped I needed Keith to cut it open. Even if I were currently capable to wrap & unwrap packages I would have needed him to do so. I have never seen such a beautiful taping job on a package. ;D

Jane, I also have Netflix and I love it. It has saved me a bundle of money on buying DVDs of people that I am going to interview.
-
Guess I shall be on my way to see a cabaret show. I'll be back as soon as possible, believe me.
-
Am I the only one here who actually saw Gorgeous George wrestle? I saw a match between he and Freddie Blassie, and at the end, GG lost, and they cut his hair off (an obvious wig). While I wrote about many of the wrestling matches I saw in Kritzer Time, I don't think I included that one.
I remember Gorgeous George. Not sure its the same Gorgeous George. My brother and I used to watch All Star Wrestling in the 60s and did what we called goony wrestling while we watched.
-
'night
-
I was going to say something else and changed my mind. Editing 'night looks rather silly-LOL
-
Tomorrow afternoon, I am going to have to do some SERIOUS package wrapping. I've put it off longer than I ever have before. Not my favorite thing to do, but it has to be done.
-
I began my evening by watching UNDERDOG on Blu-ray. Yes, it's based on the old 60s cartoon show, but it also fits right in with Disney's other comedies of the 60s where fantastical things happen to people and objects like cars.
Problem is that it isn't the 1960s, and the film is pretty lame all around. The special effects are pretty impressive - the same type of CGI that was used in BABE - plus they have the dog flying and doing all kinds of stunts. Still, weak plot, no characters of any real interest, and not much humor.
Amy Adams voices Polly Purebred. Jason Lee is the voice of Underdog.
-
Then I watched all the special features on the UNDERDOG Blu-ray. Nothing earthshaking about any of the bonuses though they did include two UNDERDOG cartoons from the 1960s. Hadn't seen any of these in decades.
-
It's been a long day. I just got in from a backer's presentation of BUSKER ALLEY at the York. DR Julie was there tonight looking absolutely fabulous. The cast was quite wonderful, and after the presentation I spent some time talking to Tony and Gen Walton, Anne Rogers (the original Polly in the London production of THE BOY FRIEND and Julie Andrews' replacement in MY FAIR LADY), Jim Morgan, Bob Billig who's currently conducting the tour of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, the presentation's MD Aaron Gandy and several others. The only person I wanted to say hello to, but missed, was Jim Dale. It' quite a lovely piece, and I still cannoy figure out why Tommy Tune was playing the lead in the original production. I think he's a wonderful perfromer and director but completely wrong for the role. Jim Dale was excellent.
-
I found myself with plenty of time tonight to watch BE YOURSELF with Fannie Brice. Lots of musical numbers for Fannie (and it was obvious some others were cut, probably due to the audience turning away from musicals by 1930), and it's also obvious this film was used as a reference on both "The Swan" sequence in FUNNY GIRL and "Great Day" in FUNNY LADY.
When I first saw FUNNY LADY, I loved "Great Day," but I thought it didn't look very 1930s, but I was wrong. Yep, there's that circular set with Fannie in black sequins at the top of the set singing "Punchin' a Hole in the Sky" like a gospel singer. Now, the arrangements in that FUNNY LADY song weren't 30s at all, but the set and costumes were closer than I ever imagined.
-
In the 25 minutes I had left before JOURNEYMAN, I put in WHITE CHRISTMAS to give it my annual viewing. I only got to the "Sisters" number, but this will be the perfect film to be playing while I wrap presents tomorrow.
-
JOURNEYMAN had another winner tonight, and Kevin McKidd was just brilliant playing heartache and deperation so well. How I'm going to miss this hour of TV after Wednesday!
-
I just reviewed the documentary Ballot Measure 9, which I bet DR MBarnum remembers (the ballot measure, not the film, the film has absolutely no Bollywood actors in it whatsoever). Measure 9 was the virulent anti-gay initiative that was on Oregon's ballot in 1992 and this film brought back those days with a vengeance (literally). I recommend it as a cautionary tale to everyone, gay or straight, as it shows how easy it is to slip into fascistic behavior. Not that our government would ever condone anything like that. ::)

Elmore and/or Jose, are there any choral sheet music stores in NYC that mght have a fairly recent, though apparently OOP, orchestral packet to go with a choral octavo by Hal Hopson based on Lord of the Dance? It was originally published by Gray in 1996, but when they went belly up the choral octavo got transferred to Alfred while the accompanying orchestral parts, well, went nowhere. I have the choral parts, I just want the orchestral parts and I really don't want to have to notate them all myself from the conductor's score. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Went to see Obama tonight. It really iritates me when a politician says he didn't vote for something when he didn't vote against it either.
Anyway, I'm really burned out on all the politics, but I was at the office and he was speaking down the hall, so I went. I can't wait for the next 17 days to be over. Then they will all leave us. I will be able to let commercials run without hitting mute, I will be able to get the mail without almost all if it being political flyers. I will be able to answer the phone again, without it being the 6th call from Obama's phone bank that day....It's been about a year and a half since they started bugging us....peace will come on January 4...... I can't wait.

WOW!
The Beethoven, the Schumann, the Ravel(!), and the Balakirev pieces were played beautifully tonight by Yefim Bronfman. I thoroughly enjoyed the recital. Oh, and the Encores - some Schumann and the last movement of the Prokofiev Seventh Piano Sonata were wonderful too.
I really could go on and on, piece by piece, movement by movement, note by note... Instead, I just want to keep enjoying what I heard tonight, rather than analyzing it. :)

I doubt at that age I could have resisted those smooth halls. They didn't do any damage to the school.
Maybe Elementary schools should post a sign:

-
And, as an added bonus, it turned out Mr. Bronfman was doing a CD signing after his recital. And I guess having a CD signing after a Monday night concert on a cold December night helped to "control" the crowd. -I think even the Carnegie Hall staff were sort of surprised that there weren't more people waiting in line up in the Rose Museum.
And the Carnegie Hall Shop is in the middle of their pre-Christmas sale, so the new-ish double-CD set of Mr. Bronfman was only $20. Tax included ;).

Lovely decorations Ginny!

I was also pleasantly surprised at how well-behaved tonight's audience was. No cell phones went off - well, not until the encores started. Although, the amount of "Roses of Picardy" perfume wafting through the air was quite stifling. ;)
And I'm still amazed at how "uneducated" some audience members can be at times. The group of "ladies who lunch" who sat behind me were quite "entertaining" before the recital as they scrutinized the program for tonight. They just could not understand why he would put the "worst" music at the end of the recital. Worst music?!?!?! They had issues with an opera that had attended last week: "There were too many countertenors on stage." ;)

Carl Fischer closed a couple of years ago, a couple of months after Carl Fischer Publishing was incorporated into Boosey & Hawkes. -Which is now part of the Hal Leonard family. -It's amazing how many music publishers have folded over the past couple of years. Basically, right now, there's only two or three music publishers who control the catalogs of a lot of smaller companies.
In any case, there's no real choral music store in NYC right now. Most people use sheetmusicplus.com or Pepper.
-
This zero tolerance bit has gotten ridiculous. I wonder if the Administrators at that elementary school who had the police drag off a kid for using a knife appropriately have any common sense at all. There has to be someone in charghe who has the abilitya nd the authority to turn their brain on and make a reasonable decision.
Why couldn't the knife have simply been confiscated, the parents called and asked to only supply precut steak and/or plastic knives it the future and explain to the girl that certain items have to be left at home for safety's sake...
Now she has been humilated, she has a 10 day suspension in her permanent record and should she actually do some "real" rule breaking in her later years, cut classes, graffitti.. whatever she will suddenly be a repeat offender.
I also wonder if that elementary school, as the Vixter's did, requires that each child be armed, supplied with a scissor and a compass...(the geometry kind not the naviagational kind) both potential weapons that were carried around in backpacks daily

Have you checked directly with Alfred? A lot of publishers are starting to print things "on demand" since a lot of their holdings are "in the computer". Both Carl Fischer and Boosey used to do that a lot with a lot of their less popular titles.
I'd also check with some of the high school choral discussion boards. See if you can loan one from someone.

DR JMK - You could also use one of those Score Scanning programs... *I'd also just Google for MIDI files. When Steve does his rehearsal CDs for the Richmond Choral Society and Men's Chorus, he finds a lot of files on the web. They're not perfect, but they save him a lot of data/note entry time.

Patti bellowing her way through a legit mezzo part! I'm surprised the Kurt Weill Foundation allowed it to be released for broadcast. Since it's a Doyle production, is she playing the tuba again?
No but she sure ate her fill of the scenery! (Appropriately)
SPOILER ALERT
I was heard to mutter..."One more God Damn kick line and I'll scream!"

But DR Jose, he is usually only wearing a pair of cargo shorts and hiking boots....I don't want to burn the guy!
Frozen hot chocolate ? I am sure Jose knows the recipe.

Edi,
Thank you for the DVD!
You did a beautiful job!
-

Good night all!!!
-
Goodnight, DR vixmom!
*And I say send out the calendars - the calendars may not "work", but the pictures should still be nice to look at.

My favorite songs are the numbers with Zubrick and the Brain, if you want any of those! :)
I like those numbers also. I am having some troubles watching them for my dail up times out before it completely loads...
-
Good night Vixmom!
-
Edi, how do I find the "hidden track" in the DVD?
We viewed the disc in the computer, not the DVD player. Even though I'm technically adept at most things I don't know much about "Easter Eggs" or "Hidden Tracks" so I need some enlightenment.
I will need to go back and listen....
-
DR JMK, I do indeed have memories of Measure 9...sometimes it is almost hard to believe that it ever was seriously considered.
And whatever did happen to Lon Mabon???
He is still at it!
Lon Mabon's Ballot Initiatives Get Approved for Circulation (http://basicrights.blogspot.com/2007/03/lon-mabons-ballot-initiatives-get.html)

Just an update on Lon Mabon's two ballot initiatives for 2008. Both have just been approved by the Oregon Secretary of State for circulation. Meaning they can begin to gather signatures. Read below for information on these hateful attempts by Mabon and his ilk...
They failed to get enough certifiable signatures, but are suing the state for not certifying correctly ( READ HERE (http://www.basicrights.org/?p=103) )
The fat lady has still to sing.

None of these Kimmels who seem to be popping up everywhere you look are related to the ORIGINAL Kimmel
and many do not compare to the one and only classiest of classiest Mr. Bruce Kimmel!

Thank you Karen and Cason for the beautiful card... You two are gems also as is all of HHW!
-
What do you call the toppings on the $1,000 sundae when you add in roach droppings?
Serendipity-doo
(just joking around - obviously, this assumes the alleged violations are correct, which I have no way of proving)

Back from the cabaret. It started about twenty minutes late - and was an odd batch of singers doing Christmas songs. I was on the guest list, and this seemed to confuse the hostess no end - she refused to seat me at a table and said to wait and she'd figure things out. She never did. I sat way in the back of the room at the bar. I was not all that happy. I left after ninety minutes. Someone said hello to me - I had no idea who they were.

ROTFLMAO!! ;D

George, sing softly & don't strain your throat.
Too late. ;) I sang the bass part, but if I didn't have a sore throat, it would've sung tenor. My friend Josh is a tenor, too. I don't know how many people were there, but it seemed at least half full. The entire Messiah wasn't performed, but it was fun. I'll probably do it again, next year. :)
-
DR George - how are you celebrating your first night of "freedom"?
I stayed home from work and then went to the Messiah Sing Along. It was fun (see post above)!
-
After I got back, I started baking some cookies for tomorrow's holiday potluck. We have a morning gift exchange (I bought some Trader Joe's chocolates) and goodie break. That's what the cookies are for. For the actual lunch time potluck, I'm bringing some blueberry/pomegranate juice and sparkling apple cider.

The entire Messiah wasn't performed...
Good heavens, a creche with half a baby Jesus?

George, he sang bass, Josh, he sang tenor,
Me and little brother would join right in there.
Singin' seems to help a troubled soul.
One of these days and it won't be long,
I'll rejoin them in a song.
I'm gonna join the fam'ly circle at the Throne.
