No...I never really got into theater until after I graduated from college and I was never in a production of Oliver!, either. I've seen it a couple of times and I have several recordings, but that's it.

You're throwing a birthday party for DR William F. Orr? How sweet!
(Happy Birthday, William!)
-
Busy busy busy at the store yesterday, and the day before. It will no doubt be busy busy busy again today, and tomorrow as well.
We'll be closed on Christmas. It's the only day of the year we are closed.
Some people get ourtraged when they find out we are open on Thanksgiving. "You shouldn't be open, you should be with your families!" they snarl. "But what about those who don't have families to be with?" I ask. They open their mouths, then shut them again and stare at me, bug-eyed and quivering because I've mentioned a truth they don't like to confront.
I'll be working on New Year's Eve, and on New Year's Day as well, from what I've gandered at the schedule Dixie (my boss) was drawing up. Somehow, that's not the same thing as being there for the unfamilied on family holidays.
-
Are you going to Magic Mommy's house for Christmas?
-
A couple of ibuprofen and a diet Coke with lime, and my head is feeling better.
-
Are you going to Magic Mommy's house for Christmas?
Ah, yes. Over the meadow and through the woods to Magic Ma's house we go.
There will be roast beef. I have little or no idea what else will be served. There will be eight of us: Der Grampa and I, Magic Mommy, Magic Daddy, the two grandlads, and Magic Daddy's parents.
Ooh, that reminds me - I want to loan Julia Child's My Life in France to MD's mother. I think she'll enjoy it.
-
And thus it is time (already) for me to prepare for work.
Actually, I first need to call the store to find out if I'm supposed to be dressed in green (regular check-out) or the infamous red (self-scan).
Later.
-
Sunday.
Happy Birthday to DR WILLIAM F. ORR

I will definitely be finishing THE TUDORS today. I'm so disapppointed in the transfers. The close-ups are fine, but everything else is a tad soft with poor contrast. They just don't look anywhere near as good as they did on Showtime-HD.
Now, some DVD transfers like LOST, CSI: NY, BONES, and MEDIUM look very close to HD on their sDVD transfers, so I don't know what went wrong here.
-
DR FJL and SKIP would of course score the stage version of the film of my life!
;D
-
Again, nothing on TV for me tonight, so after I finish THE TUDORS, I'll have to decide between one of the DVDs I got for Christmas or one of the Blu-rays. A tough decision as I want to see them all and just can't select one at the moment.
-
I'm also trying to figure out what kind of desk calendar to get for downstairs. My friend Hal gave me a WIZARD OF OZ daily calendar for upstairs (which you'll be getting clips from in the coming year after I've exhausted the Harry Potter clips), but I'm not sure what I'll have for downstairs. I had a Peanuts calendar for 2007, but I think I'll look for something else this year.

1 3/4 days until Christmas.
With all the parties and gift giving I participated in this week, I keep thinking that Christmas is over, and it isn't even here yet!

I have to say that I'm looking forward to two blessed days of easy going pleasure today and tomorrow. I can bum around in old clothes and not shave and just do the usual chores without worrying about getting ready for a party or buying gifts or anything.

Ectoplasmosis - objects in meat (http://www.ectomo.com/index.php/2007/12/18/objects-in-meat/)
Being a carnivore can be difficult when, like me, your significant other is a member of that reprehensible subspecies of mankind known as “vegetarian”. Many nights have I spent mournfully choking down a plate of soy excrement, trying desperately to recall the inhuman sins I had surely committed in a previous life to warrant such punishment.
My delight, then, at the sculptures of Simone Racheli is understandable. I have visions of my other reaching, her eyes half full of sleep not yet dispelled by her scalding shower, for her hair dryer. Little by little, as its steady drone begins to pull her from her morning reverie, she notices that its hum is decidedly more moist than she recalls; its case, usually comfortable and familiar in her grip, feels slick and alien to her now.

Sunday afternoon greetings! Oh, my, it's been a busy day already. Four of us took three cars to Cincinnati for church - I stopped on my way at my mom's to drop off some Christmas shopping I'd done for her and to have "second breakfast" with her and my sister and brother-in-law. After church, Richard, Rob, Mary Linda, and I went out for brunch and then in 3 different directions. Richard went back to church to prepare for the Lessons & Carols service that started 10 minutes ago, Rob and Mary Linda did some last-minute Christmas shopping, and I picked up our Honey Baked ham for tomorrow. Rob & ML are back at church now with Richard and I'm home, getting ready to go back out to the grocery. I told them they could be Mary this afternoon, but someone has to be Martha (Luke 10:38-39).

Sometimes I forget he really was born yesterday.
-
So, after hurriedly readying myself to get out the door this morning, I attended Mass with my parents. When I used to live here, and would go to Mass, I would usually go to the Cathedral since it was basically a part of the campus of my college, and they would have a very formal service - which is what I basically grew up on. Well, today's service was quite interesting. It seemed very Methodist and Baptist influenced. It was a very touchy-feely service - which started with the greeters at the front of the church shaking everyone's hands as they entered. And I have to admit I was sort of surprised to see "altar girls" along with the "altar boys". I know the Church did approve altar girls a couple of years ago, but I had just never seen one, let alone three. The small choir (six people), was lead by a very exuberant leader/singer, and they were accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. They had an organist, a pianist, a guitarist, a flutist, and, a mandolin. At least I think there was a mandolin, I never saw it, but I thought I kept hearing mandolin strumming and plucking, but that could have just been the way the guitar was mic'd. With that instrumentation, some of the hymns ended up sounding a bit more contemporary than their 18th and 19th Century roots. But I did get a kick out the almost jazz-waltz treatment of one the 3/4 hymns - love the hemiola! It was also the first time in a long time that I had seen wine offered to everyone during the Eucharist. Even the children took their sips - and it really was wine (port), and not grape juice.
After the Mass was over, they had asked for volunteers to help decorate the church for Christmas. -They only put up their trees and greenery and such for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day through Epiphany. Well, my Mom and Dad have become quite active in this parish, so my Mom decided to pitch in for a bit. My Dad and I just headed out to the car to wait for her. -I hadn't slept well last night, and just wasn't feeling all that well this morning, and I'm dealing with a slight cold and/or allergies. In any case...

This is why it drives me crazy to see Christmas trees on the curb to be disposed of on December 26th. The commercialism has turned everything topsy-turvy. And people don't get it.
Ah, well.
My mother, and her mother and father; as well as previous generations of her family, were all devout Methodists. In fact, I was, for a time, a divinity student myself in the Methodist church. But the one area my mother broke with the church was in leaving the Christmas tree up until Twelfth Night. She always tried to put the blame on my dad's side of the family, saying that the Norwegians thought that it was bad luck to keep the tree up past New Year's Day.
Strangely, no other members of my dad's family had ever heard of that superstition. Personally, I think that she just got sick of vacuuming up pine needles.

Aside from the Texas Hold 'Em poker game, I truly enjoyed CASINO ROYALE; it's as over-the-top as any of the late 60s early 70s Bonds, but with a more 'human' James Bond than we've had since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE.
I'm aware that the franchise needed a jump-start, and CASINO ROYALE really did the trick for me, co-mingling scenes from the novel with eye-popping stunts and set pieces popping up all over the place.
I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, but, once Bond is in Le Chevre's hands (so to speak) all of the Ian Fleming comes to the fore, or to the bottomless cane chair, so to speak.
Also, isn't this the first time we've had a totally naked Bond? (Essential to the plot, if one has read CASINO ROYALE, so it's not gratuitous nudity).
-
I could use a margarita. . . .
-
Tomorrow is the morning that I have to be at Borders for opening: I must walk through the doors before 6:45am and be on the register promptly at 7am.
-
Well, at least I get off at 2. At that point I'll buy my dvd of EASTERN PROMISES and the latest Steve Berry novel. . .
-
Later tomorrow evening, I shall attend the tale of SWEENEY TODD at the nearest cinema.

While we were waiting in the car, my Dad and I were chit-chatting... I for some unknown reason finally took the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions I've never really known the answers too: When did you come to the States? When and where did you meet mom? When did you get married? Where were you first stationed with the Coast Guard?...
I don't think I've ever heard my Dad talk quite so much in my life. And with such expression. He answered all my questions and more. And some of his answers surprised me. I had always been under the assumption that my Mom and Dad had met and were married in the Philippines before they came to the States. Boy, was I wrong! My Dad came over in 1962 after passing the exam to join the Coast Guard. He went through 12 weeks(!) of "forming the company" (a.k.a. basic training) in Alameda, and then his first duty station was Boston. -And he only ended up there since he was not in "class" the day they started the billet selection process. Luckily, three of his fellow classmates went to Boston with him. By bus. Via Chicago and New York City. -Which was the first time he was at Radio City! And he stayed at the YMCA in NYC for $2.00!
He met my Mom in Boston. A friend's wife's had fixed them up! That was in 1965, and they were married the following year. In the summer of 1968, my Dad was transferred up to Portsmouth, NH. My Mom stayed in Boston since she was finishing her schooling - she had come over in 1965 as part of an exchange program with the nursing school - and, more importantly, because she was pregnant with me. Alas, when she went into labor, since my Dad was up in Portsmouth at the time, my mom drove herself to the hospital! Thankfully, my Dad was able to get some emergency leave approved, and he was able to make it back down to Boston for my birth.
Then he told me about the move down to DC (the first time), and that brought up a whole lot of wonderful memories for me: our first baby-sitter (Mrs. Fischer, who is still alive and who plan to visit in January), my one and only trip to the Philippines when I was six (we went for three weeks), our first house in Arlington, our second house in Arlington, some crazy neighbors, some even crazier relatives, etc., etc., etc.
It truly was quite a wonderful, unexpected and joyous(!) way to pass the time while waiting for my mother. -Who did not finish up until about 45 minutes later - and that was only after my Dad went in after her, and ended up helping out for a couple of minutes himself.
:)
-
It was a very touchy-feely service - which started with the greeters at the front of the church shaking everyone's hands as they entered. And I have to admit I was sort of surprised to see "altar girls" along with the "altar boys".
Think how much that must have upset the priests!
-
After leaving church parking lot, we headed to lunch, and I decided that they should try some place new and non-chain, so we headed to Kitchen 64 (http://www.kitchen64.com/). I had never been to Kitchen 64, but it's owned and run by the same family as my beloved Stella's, Sidewalk Cafe and Three Monkeys, and all the reviews of the place have been glowing.
We had a great meal - some very over-stuffed sandwiches (the leftovers are in the fridge) - and I also took the time to ask my Mom a couple of questions about when she came over to the States, as well as to fill in some of the holes in my Dad's memories.... Another wonderful conversation. :)
-
Think how much that must have upset the priests!
Is that thunder I hear in the distance?
-
One very cool thing I learned this afternoon is that my Dad really wants to take a good chunk of time next year to drive around the country - well, at least up and down the Eastern Seaboard - to visit some of his old haunts and to see a his old friends and fellow "Coasties". -Which, as it turns out, is the reason he sold the car yesterday. The money he got for that car will be put toward the down payment for a new car - the one they're going to be trekking around in. (Whew! -No RV! ;))
He also said that he wants to go back to the Philippines sometime next year for a true visit (instead of heading back for a wedding, sick relative, funeral, etc.). And he wants to take (and pay for) me and my brothers to take the trip with them. Now that's definitely something worth clearing my calendar for!
-
I started to watch the new CASINO ROYALE....Daniel Craig is just not James Bondian to me...and his ears are huge! I only watched about a half hour of it...my brother in law requested that I bring it over tomorrow for viewing at their house, so I will.
I take it you didn't get to the scene where Mr. Craig emerges from the sea? Or the nude torture scene? Are you not aware that Clark Gable proved long ago the proof of the axiom about big ears.
-
DR TCB - how're you feeling, my friend?
I take it that you also liked CASINO ROYALE. . .I know you liked Daniel Craig's impersonation of Ursula Andress. . .
-
I take it we've already done the Arsula Undress pun here on HHW.
-
After lunch, my Dad wanted to go to Costco to pick up some food for the Christmas meal - New York Strip Steaks! However, since my Mom had been inquiring where a particular Chinese restaurant was, I ended up giving them a brief car tour of Richmond's West End.
Full Kee was/is one of their favorite restaurants in DC, and I had told them that there was a branch of Full Kee in Richmond too, but they could never find it. Well, now they now where it is. Full Kee is in Richmond's "Little Saigon" - a cluster of Asian markets, beauty salons and bakeries (most of which are housed in small houses that got rezoned as businesses). We even stopped into the Vietnamese bakery, where my Mom scouted out some items for future visits - and I picked up a Vietnamese Iced Coffee.
Then we made our way to Costco which was packed, but the lines were managed well at the check out registers. In fact, while we were heading out with our purchases, my Dad remembered he wanted to get something else, so he went back in. And he was back out of there just a few minutes later.

I thought it was a terrific movie, and probaby the best Bond film since Connery left.

DR MBarnum - If you're looking at Daniel Craig's ears, well... That explains a lot.
;)

Has Sandra taught you how to inhale?

I didn't inhale (a Bill Clinton reference).

Oh. How am I feeling? Better, thank you for asking. I think my fever started to break last night. When I woke up this morning I thought I was in a waterbed.

Ron, what day do you fly back to Oakland?
-
Today has been Sunday, December 23, 2007.
It was a day of much church activity on the local scene.
We had morning church, during which Pastor Tommy Barwick preached loud and long, telling all and sundry exactly what Christmas is and how faith prevails over the naysayers.
We had lunch at a local country club. I took an afternoon nap.
Then we went to a candlelight service during which Pastor Tommy Barwick preached loud and long, telling all and sundry about the Protestant churches' observance of Christmas through the ages.
This was followed by a communion and a lighting of candles, after which Christmas carols were sung and then the service was over.
Even though Pastor Barwick preached both times loud and long, I think I appreciated his convictions and faith more than I ever have. They were his two best sermons that I have been a party to.
And now I type. And now I relax. And now my mom is preparing some supper.
And tomorrow is Christmas Eve, December 24, 2007.
-
I don't know what you are talking about there, DR Elmore!
-
My spaghetti sauce is spectacular, even I have to say so myself.
I lovingly prepared it yesterday afternoon, and it's mouthwatering aromas filled the house all night.
I have also brought some fresh grated parmesan from a store in Oakland to serve with the spaghetti.
I cannot wait for Christmas Eve and our spaghetti supper.
-
Ron, what day do you fly back to Oakland?
Thursday.
-
Jose, what makes an iced coffee a Vietnamese iced coffee? Just the beans?
-
I did see Daniel Craig's scene in the surf (a couple of times). ;D
-
"The Stand" is playing on TV in the background (SciFi Channel) as I type.
I logged on primarily to see what is playing on TV tonight. I've yet to find out because I realized how seriously remiss I was in posting today.
-
The cloudy cloudiness with the misty mistiness we have been experiencing in recent days -- not to mention, even though I am mentioning it, the rains that fell upon us this morning -- has cleared out.
We have been left with clear skies, a bright full moon, and considerably cold air.
-
Jose, what makes an iced coffee a Vietnamese iced coffee? Just the beans?
Or does a Vietnamese have to spit in it first?
-
:D
-
I did see Daniel Craig's scene in the surf (a couple of times). ;D
You need to rent/watch "Love is the Devil", Mike.
-
I may be -- just possibly -- developing a head cold.
I'm not promising anything. Tomorrow things might be just peachy.
But for now, I'm a bit congested with sinus flow.
Otherwise, I feel fine.

The dogs.
-
Or does a Vietnamese have to spit in it first?
If they spit in it, it's called "The Ron Pulliam Special".
Otherwise, it's basically very strong and very sweet coffee (sweetened with condensed milk) over ice. Some Vietnamese restaurants will serve it by giving you the small drip pot/cup, a cup of ice, and a small pitcher of the condensed milk so that you can sweeten it to your taste. It's always "fun" watching the coffee drip into the glass over the ice. However, sometimes I prefer it pre-made, and ready to drink once it hits the table.
-
Oy--we had a huge, overflow audience today and it resulted in the playback sounding very low (since all those extra bodies were just sitting there, sucking up sound waves), resulting in several scary wrong entrances.
-
Der Brucer and I have just (but much more than barely) survived a power outage tonight. It's been slightly rainy all day, not hard, just like the last time the power went out. The bad news was that it was already dark; the good news that I knew where I'd stashed the tea lights I'd bought a few days ago.
The tea lights were a good idea. I popped them into old-fashioned glasses, which kept the dogs from sniffing at them and blowing them out, and refracted the light pretty well. "Cut" glass works better for the refraction, I think, spreading the glow more evenly.
-
Who is coming for dinner on Christmas Eve?
Dinner is at my Cousin Debra's. Her husband, Rob, will be there along with children Becky and Chad. Becky is a junior in high school and Chad graduated college last spring. He works in Augusta GA.
My Aunt Doris and Uncle Rock will be there. And my cousin Ashley, and her husband David Hayes, will be there. They live in Greenville SC.
And my mom and I will be there.
That group will all be at my Aunt's house Christmas night, along with my cousin, Butch, his 5-year-old son Benjamin (but not his wife, Judi, who is feuding with my Cousin Debra), my cousin Ricky and his wife Susan, along with Rick's children Lauren and Lindsey (twin daughters attending Greenville Technical College in Greenville SC studying nursing) and, possibly, his son Garrick (layabout, addict and ne'er-do-well) and Garricks' daughter Addison (Addison's mother, not married to Garrick, is on the outs with Garrick and lives with her parents).
The whole clan will be there eating and outtalking one another.
Thank the maker, my mom's house is across the street and I (or we) can leave whenever we can't take it one second longer.
-
If they spit in it, it's called "The Ron Pulliam Special".
Stop it, Jose! You'll turn my head one time too many! :D
-
The funniest one for me was the Godmother, who usually jumps the gun about halfway through Impossible(after the brief interlude where Cinderella does her "official wishing"). Well this afternoon she finally came in correctly, and then just stopped cold, and I was completely caught by surprise, so I had this spasmodic episode trying to get my right hand up to play the melody quickly so she'd know where we were, and I did this completely hilarious (to me anyway) version of the melody.
-
Supper beckons.
Adieu!
-
You wanna hear about rain--we're drowning here. There was literally feet of standing water driving home from the show--it was frightening.
-
The dogs.
No, No, No! That's Filipino coffee.

TOD:
If your life was a movie, who would write the score?
Milton Babbit.

Just heard that 50s starlet Jeanne Carmen passed away on Thursday of lymphoma. She made regular appearences at the Ray Court's Show in Burbank, and, indeed was reunited with her MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS co-star Don Sullivan when I attened last summer. She was so vivacious and healthy looking then, it is rather a shock.
Other films include PORTLAND EXPOSE, THE DEVIL'S HAND, TOO MUCH TOO SOON, BORN RECKLESS, UNTAMED YOUTH, GUN'S DON'T ARGUE and the Three Stooges short A MERRY MIX UP.

Good morning, DR LAURA.
It is VERY windy here in Mooresville Indiana....the garbage cans are dancing down the street.
Probably not a soft-shoe.

I have just begun to go through today's posts!

No, No, No! That's Filipino coffee.

And Happy Birthday, WFO! We certainly have a lot of December birthdays 'round these parts.

As for who would underscore my life...
Living composer: Peter Schickele and P.D.Q. Bach
Not living composer: Leonard Bernstein, Francis Poulenc

You wanna hear about rain--we're drowning here. There was literally feet of standing water driving home from the show--it was frightening.
Thanks a lot, JMK. Your little rain shower is now arriving here.

Booze? You mean the candles weren't supposed to flame up like that? :o

Took a moment to get dinner in the oven. Sauerkraut and pork ribs (with apples and onion added). I'll be roasting a few red taters later, closer to dindin time.

LOL....so it's the same problem....just new technology. I know what you mean....lots of my names don't mean anything to me anyway when I'm doing a search. ::)
So many men, so little time!

DR Jose, I loved the story about your dad's life. Around 1992, I went back to Ohio with a cassette recorder and made my mom, dad, and Aunt Dorothy tell me as many stories about my family that I could put on tape. It was quite an emotional set of days and I have some wonderful tales, several humorous, some quite sad, and even a few heroic ones.
-
1 3/4 days until Christmas.
Lord only knows how long it will be until the Doctor Who 2007 Christmas Special: Voyage of the Damned arrives here in the states. :'(

It's obviously a lazy Sunday around these here parts. You'd think it was two days before Christmas.
Lazy? Today? We were busy busy busy at the store today!

I loved the story about my Dad's life - and my Mom's too. I actually think I'm the first son (of the four) to get the "whole story". Although, there's a good chance my youngest brother, Jay, may already know all the details since he's living out in San Diego among a good chunk of my Dad's family.
It was neat hearing about how a chance meeting with a fellow officer helped him to secure a short-duty station while me and my brothers were children. My Dad was working as a steward, and my Dad had told one of his CO's that he wanted to get off the ship for a while. Well, a few months later, while he was working, he was told there was a call from HQ - he thought he was in trouble. It turned out that the officer he had met was in charge of determining the upcoming billet stations, and he was calling my Dad personally to tell him that some shore-duty billets were available in the next rotation, and was asking him which one he'd prefer. And that's how he and my Mom ended up down in DC the first time - just a few months after I was born. He ended up being stationed down DC for seven years the first time - most billets only lasted two or three years. Of course, after DC came Seattle, and then he was back on ship duty there and when we moved to Connecticut two years later. -And by then, I was old enough to start taking care of and cooking for my brothers. ;)
-
Sheesh.
Even with it spelled right in front of him, he still manages to typo.
What I have to live with.

Another statement I can not disagree with.
;D
-
I remember when the Navy had "Stewards".
-
Jose, ask your dad about the "compromised" advancement exams that seemed to plague the "Steward" rating in the 1970s.
-
If my life were a movie, I'd have it scored by:
Living: David Shire
Deceased: Alfred Newman
-
And I have to say I'm actually kind of excited about heading back to the Philippines sometime in the future. I've always been sort of hesitant about the trip back "home" - the long plane flight, the heat(!), the humidity(!), the bugs(!!!). But, now, it seems like it will be "neat". -And, I have to say, after talking with my father and mother this mother, I'm sorry I never really spent that much time with my grandparents since they stayed in the Islands. Although, at some point and time, they all did come stateside for a couple of weeks while we lived in Seattle.
-
Jose, ask your dad about the "compromised" advancement exams that seemed to plague the "Steward" rating in the 1970s.
The only thing he did mention about being a Steward was that if he wanted to change specialties, he would have to start all over again pay-grade-wise - at least while he was Enlisted. However, once he became a CPO, he did have to learn a lot of management and leadership duties - as well as a lot more nautical skill since he'd be serving on board Cutters and The Eagle.
-
Aren't they precious?
-
And it turns out the start of the Vietman War was the reason my Dad received his U.S. Citizenship... Since any foreign nationals serving in the Armed Forces were granted citizenship in order to serve. -I still need to research which Act of Congress/Law that was.
-
DR DearReaderLaura - AH! It's nice to know that tinsel-garland halos are still in fashion. :)
-
They are a classic, Jose!
But we did replace the tin-foil wings. They weren't in the box when we unpacked it after the move, somehow.
-
And note the gender-blind casting.
-
The BEST Bond film, IMO, was "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"...and even though Craig is a great Bond, I thought "Casino Royale" not quite as good as "OHMSS".
But that's me.
It's not just you, DR Ron. I place my Bond movies thus:
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
CASINO ROYALE (2006)
-
I cannot put OHMSS in my fave Bond film list. Sorry, just doesn't work, and I love Diana Rigg. Unfortunately, Lazenby and Savalas counter all my love for her. :P
-
I cannot put OHMSS in my fave Bond film list. Sorry, just doesn't work, and I love Diana Rigg. Unfortunately, Lazenby and Savalas counter all my love for her. :P
I loved George Lazenby in OHMSS. Have never understood negative reactions to him.
But, again, that's me.
-
For some strange reason, the third Bond film any actor has done remains my favorite for that actor.
Connery - Goldfinger.
Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me.
Brosnan - The World Is Not Enough.
Timothy Dalton, your take on Bond was good, you should have stuck around a little longer, you only made two flicks.
And MBarnum, if you think Daniel Craig has jug ears, you ought to take a gander at Christopher Eccleston!
The 9th Doctor's ears almost overshot his shoulders!
-
Great family stories from DR Jose and a cute Christmas pageant photo from DR Laura.
I was away making a jello salad for tomorrow and a taco supper for my family - Feliz Navidad!
-
elmore, I sure thought I'd mentioned it in a post, and even what I'd spent it on, but maybe I'm having a senior moment. I'm always on the fence about signing things unless someone specifically asks, but I'll sign it when I'm next in NY for sure!

Dinner is almost en table.
And I need to get up early tomorrow. Der Brucer has "conveniently" left some of the X-mas shopping until the last moment, and insists on my going with him... before my shift at work.
He's going to find that I can set my alarm clock pretty danged early when I want to!
*evil laugh*
-
Has anyone ever checked out whitepages.com. I used it to get the zip code for a friend of mine. It brought up not only her name, address, and phone number; but it also gave her age.
I have an unlisted phone number, but for me it still brought up my name, address (with the correct apartment number), and my age. True, it made me a year younger than I am, but I still think that is kind of scary. The reason I had an unlisted number was so that when I was working as a Welfare worker, none of my clients would know my phone number or my address. Now the only secret is my phone number. Creepy!
-
You're listed under "Creepy"? Who knew?
-
Yes, I found myself, where I work, age, etc. It is scary. I don't know where they got it.
-
Favourite Bond movies:
From Russia with Love
Casino Royale (2006)
Never Say Never Again. (Rehashed plot but it was Connery again!)
-
I still remember when Alyssa cried whenever you looked at her.
Well, it now appears that her younger sister, and my god-daughter, Emily, has followed suit in that regards. Although, Emily did walk up to me and give me one of the ornaments she took off the Christmas tree. Of course, when I tried to give her a hug to thank her, she ran off to her Daddy.
-
I almost forgot, DR George and DR TCB, thanks for the very nice Christmas cards!
-
I am not sure what my favorite Bond movies are as it has been many, many, many years since I have seen one. But for me Sean Connery IS James Bond. Gosh, that man would have me at "Hello." 8)
George Lazenby is my # two Bond. The rest don't even factor into the equation for me.

Hangover?
Rough sea trip?
Horseshoes?
Bad night's sleep?
Salad Preparation?
It's So confusing!

I shall now relax with some 1930s Rin Tin Tin movies..right now I am watching LAW OF THE WOLF, and the lead man is played by Dennis Moore...wowee...what a handsome guy...and they certainly make him take his shirt off a lot. Sort of makes you forget there is even a dog in this movie.

It is interesting that the words "tossing" and "purging" are the best descriptions for de-packratting, though.
I usually use the terms "sort and toss" or "cull", as some things do get saved and filed.
-
I certainly found CASINO ROYALE very entertaining (too long and the women rather charmless in this one). And in Daniel Craig, a truly terrific new James Bond.
-
I started to watch the new CASINO ROYALE....Daniel Craig is just not James Bondian to me...and his ears are huge!
You know, I've spend many hours watching Daniel Craig in many films and yet I've never noticed his ears. Hum...
-
The BEST Bond film, IMO, was "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"...and even though Craig is a great Bond, I thought "Casino Royale" not quite as good as "OHMSS".
But that's me.
I thought they were both too long for the stories they had to tell.
For me, GOLDFINGER does it.
-
Jon Creek - fun shows. But not after Caroline Quentin left the show.
-
I began my evening with the remaining episodes of THE TUDORS. By the time we get to the end, Wolsey is gone, Cromwell is on the ascent, Henry is on the verge of founding the Church of England.
And the actor who plays Anne's brother George (Padraic Delaney) is adorable.
-
Interesting how "sort and toss" can be sung to the tune of Legally Blonde's "Bend and Snap."
Maybe we can do a combo exercise move and house de-clutterer and market it as the "Sort and Toss."
-
Then I watched the bonus features on the fourth disc. There were brief featurettes on the sets and costumes (both deserved to be much lengthier, especially the costumes).
The most significent extra is a 20+ minute tour of notable sights in and around London where some momentous events in Tudor history occurred. (Not in the filming of this series, however, which was shot completely in Ireland.)

Next I watched Universal's anamorphic encoding of PILLOW TALK. It will always be one of my favorites comedies, and this DVD improves on sharpness and richness in color from the nonanamorphic edition I have had for years.
However, no clean-up of any kind was done on the film for this DVD. The image is just speckled with dirt from first moment to last.

I had about 70 minutes left in my evening, so I put in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT Part II. Not in the same league with the original film or with the third part, this one is too much a hodgepodge of clips without much thought to putting them into sensible groupings. (There are a couple of groupings but other sections are haphazardly assembled.)
The numbers that were deleted when the first cut ran too long ("Stanley Steamer," "Drum Crazy") have not been reinserted for the DVD release. And though I love Astaire and Kelly dearly, there is WAY too much of them. At one point, Gene says in voiceover, "Here you are again, Fred," and I said "THAT'S THE TRUTH!"
I still have about an hour left.

Ewww! I just did the whitepages.com since the phone is listed/unlisted under my mother's name, BUT, MY NAME appears there, as well, with our ages, or a rough estimate of our ages. . . .

How nice for both Larry and Jose! I had been wanting to do the same thing with my uncle (my father's brother). I flew to Galveston one Thanksgiving and he told me some family stories, but clearly he'd already forgotten much. It's amazing how much family history gets lost. My mother's first language was Czech and once she learned English she seemed to cast aside her former life. How can we live with people every day and not know these things?

I have some writing to take care of now, so I'll log off presently.
Good night!

White Pages has me listed at the business address of DVD Talk here in Portland. That is truly and utterly weird.

Well, I believe I'm going to head to bed now too. I woke up with a slight case of the sniffles, and it's turned into more-than-a-slight-case of the sniffles. *Although, I do have to wonder if all the coughing and sneezing and nose-blowing at church this morning may have contributed to my present state... especially when it came time for the Sign of Peace: Peace be with you <hand shake> <pass on the germs>, Peace be with you <hand shake> <pass on the germs>, Peace be with you <hand shake> <pass on the germs>, etc., etc., etc. In any case, I am sleepy, so...
Goodnight.

Jon Creek - fun shows. But not after Caroline Quentin left the show.
I've only watched the first two episodes. I love his vocation, that he creates the illusions. I love the windmill house. I love quirky houses.
Didn't know CQ left. Yes, it would be quite different without her.

Interesting how "sort and toss" can be sung to the tune of Legally Blonde's "Bend and Snap."
Maybe we can do a combo exercise move and house de-clutterer and market it as the "Sort and Toss."
;D
Where's JRand, the HHW choreographer?

Then there's that culling song that Ginny told us about, the one that's sung to the RAWHIDE theme.
-
I really should try to go to be before 1 am.
Good night.

I remember when the Navy had "Stewards".
I remember when the rating was opened up to permit caucasians (unfortunately the only takers were mountainboys who had been enlisted with a special IQ dispensation).
I remember helping one of the lads - his "mental problems" were on the mend once I discovered his big secret - he could not read!

Been a stressful few days. I opened presents tonight with my immediate family and it was bitter sweet. Since my entire family's birthdays are all in December we also celebrated our birthdays.
My father was greatly missed today but it was still a pleasant day. I did get a couple of nice things and can retire the old dvd player that is having issues with higher quality DVDs. My mother is holding her own but is having a rough time.
However tomorrow will be the big test. Her family has been the most part supportive with the exception of one sister who I will call Aunt Parasite. I am not far from decking her. She thinks she can dictate what my mother can do and walks right into the house. Presumptious in my opinion. She is a miserable person to be around and feels others have to be miserable with her.

Aren't they precious?

And it turns out the start of the Vietman War was the reason my Dad received his U.S. Citizenship... Since any foreign nationals serving in the Armed Forces were granted citizenship in order to serve. -I still need to research which Act of Congress/Law that was.
Immigration and Nationality Act TITLE III (http://www.immigration-usa.com/ina_96_title_3.html)
NATURALIZATION THROUGH ACTIVE-DUTY SERVICE IN THE ARMED FORCES DURING WORLD WAR I, WORLD WAR II, THE KOREAN HOSTILITIES, THE VIETNAM HOSTILITIES, OR IN OTHER PERIODS OF MILITARY HOSTILITIES

(a) Any person who, while an alien or a noncitizen national of the United States, has served honorably in an active-duty status in the military, air, or naval forces of the United States during either World War I or during a period beginning September 1, 1939, and ending December 31, 1946, or during a period beginning June 25, 1950, and ending July 1, 1955, or during a period beginning February 28, 1961, and ending on a date designated by the President by Executive order as the date of termination of the Vietnam hostilities, or thereafter during any other period which the President by Executive order shall designate as a period in which Armed Forces of the United States are or were engaged in military operations involving armed conflict with a hostile foreign force, and who, if separated from such service, was separated under honorable conditions, may be naturalized as provided in this section if (1) at the time of enlistment or induction such person shall have been in the United States, the Canal Zone, America Samoa, or Swains Island, whether or not he has been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence, or (2) at any time subsequent to enlistment or induction such person shall have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.

Finished with my viewing and shall now settle down to write Ye Olde Notes.

But first, let me just say - PAGE TEN?

Oh, well, at least we've got us eleven GUESTS who have nothing much to read right now.

Today, I did nothing but watch TV...that's pretty much it. I watched four episodes of "Bionic Woman" and several other shows. I didn't leave my house at all. Tomorrow, the family is going to my parents' house for gift giving and receiving. I still have to wrap what I've got to give. It shouldn't take much time, though. :)
