Title: THE DAY OF THE DO
Post by: bk on December 24, 2007, 12:18:14 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Bb and G, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having a Christmas Eve Moo, and can't be bothered now.

This is kind of fun: Shopdropping (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/24/us/24shopdrop.html?hp)

Quote
This is the season of frenetic shopping, but for a devious few people it’s also the season of spirited shopdropping.

Otherwise known as reverse shoplifting, shopdropping involves surreptitiously putting things in stores, rather than illegally taking them out, and the motivations vary.

Good morning, all! Apart from work this morning on "The Lady of the Slipper." I'm having a holiday and enjoying myself.  I have a couple of things to wrap, and I have a ticket to see SWEENEY TODD again this evening.

I've been reading the Brian Kellow bio of Ethel Merman, and last night I was reading the section on HAPPY HUNTING, so I'm listening to the OBC recording.  What a dog! Poor Ethel!

Oh dear - I did have to come back and post this planetary caution:

A home-cleaning campaign fits in nicely with the extra Mars dynamism that needs to be poured into a safe mold. Your interest in computers, high technology and scientific advances peaks as the Moon makes a flowing trine to Uranus in water signs (3:04PM PST). This is amplified this evening when the Sun approaches a mentally-stimulating 72-degree link to Uranus (exact at 1:04AM PST tomorrow). Learn more about ancient history, mythology, and the ageless wisdom teachings of many cultures from around the world.

With the moon making a flowing trine and the Sun approaching a direct link to Uranus.....anything can happen, that's for sure!

An ode to Jrand's prognostication:

Trine to Uranus
It's likely to pain us
Until you see a Neptune follow
Trine to Uranus
Our parents must train us
Without a hurt the moon is hollow

Deep in Uranus
It gets so darn heinous
Unless it can drain us
Or make us wallow

Trine to Uranus
And if it's Uranus
Just follow
(Follow, follow, follow)

TOD - Episodes

This is absolutely impossible!  Doctor Who has thirteen episodes per season, it is impossible to narrow the best down to ten!

 ;)

More seriously, that series had some of it's best stories over the past year.  The best of the lot was Blink, a time-travel sci-fi/horror story filled with "wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey" stuff, made even more remarkable in that it was a) told from the p.o.v. of someone who was not jumping around in time, but witnessing it happening to the people around her, and b) involved the Doctor and Martha minimally.  Brilliant writing.

Another episode, Gridlock was also very good, and fun, while demonstating the positive effects of faith.  And the two-parter, Human Nature and The Family of Blood, gave a chilling example of what war's effects can be, not by being anti-war but by showing how different real war is to the glorification it gets by those not involved directly.

I'm trying to think of any other series that had individual episodes that really stuck.  Nope, not happening.

As far as memorable episodes of 2007, that's harder.

The penultimate episode of TORCHWOOD as Captain Jack met his namesake certainly ranks as one of the most poignant episodes I saw in 2007.

I also loved the mix of comedy and pathos with the season one finale of BROTHERS & SISTERS.

Christopher's death episode on THE SOPRANOS was a shocker.

DEXTER's season finale had me on pins and needles for the entire episode.

There were half a dozen LOST episodes that had me riveted including the season finale episode which not only dealt with the death of a major beloved character but also instituted flashforwards into the construction of the episodes that was a major shock!

I agree that UGLY BETTY's season two premiere and HEROES' "Four Months Earlier" were superb episodes in every way.

I have the review copy of THE OMEGA MAN that I'll deal with first. Doesn't appear to be a great number of bonus features on it.

An ode to Jrand's prognostication:

Trine to Uranus
It's likely to pain us
Until you see a Neptune follow
Trine to Uranus
Our parents must train us
Without a hurt the moon is hollow

Deep in Uranus
It gets so darn heinous
Unless it can drain us
Or make us wallow

Trine to Uranus
And if it's Uranus
Just follow
(Follow, follow, follow)

Some pundits attribute Sweeney's fifth place because of being in only 1200 theaters, and they point out to its second highest per-screen average for the weekend.  The problem with doing so is that had it been on 1500 more screens it would have come in 4th, most likely, but its screen average would, again most likely, have been fifth.  And had it been on 1500 more screens I think it actually would have done worse than it did.  All that said, there's nothing wrong with its opening week gross - however, it's clear it will not be a record-breaker, which is what everyone, all these teenage box-office-following-theater nerds were saying.

It's been sort of interesting here in Richmond in regards to news anchors.  There always seems to be at least one quietly "open" news anchor at each station at any particular point and time.  You will see them at Gay Pride events, hanging out at the local "special interest establishments", etc.  For a market that still "likes" to be "traditional" and dare I say "prudish", I've always found it kind of cool.

Of course, there is the CBS affiliate in DC that always seemed to have a gay weatherman.  Alas, some of those meteorologists seemed to be a bit too partial to the weather - well, at least being outside, if you get my drift.  :o :-\

The LA TIMES (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-fi-boxoffice24dec24,0,7683002.story?coll=la-home-entertainment) noted:

Quote
Star power propelled two films to solid openings in the $9-million to $10-million range.

The political romp "Charlie Wilson's War," with Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman, ranked fourth. Fifth was the gory musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," with Johnny Depp. Both opened in the upper range of expectations.

In this busy field, ST may well be everybody's second/third choice - so the numbers for the next two week will tell us if it has legs. It's hard to gauge what "word of mouth" might do. The film is nothing like the TV promos (which in only the last few days hinted that this slasher flick might have some singing).

The great hope is that the film will do well enough, financially, that producers will not be turned off on doing more stage-film musicals. I was envouraged that our theatre full of RENT look-alikes seemed to like the film.

Woody is doing missionary work - he loaned out both the Broadway CD and the hard cover libretto to the new bag boy at the the market.

The LA Times person should be fired.  A nine to ten million dollar Christmas opening is anything but solid, Jackson.   He's just repeating what he's being told by the studio flacks.  Dreamworks was HOPING for a twelve million weekend and coming up three shy of that does not paint a rosy picture.  The coming weeks will tell the story, although box-office, in this current way of things, is not known for going UP.

That said, why people care so much about the box-office (a phenomenon of the Internet) is anyone's guess.  Love the film, hate the film, but the box-office will be the box-office.  Studios are on a musicals kick right now - why is anyone's guess, but one presumes they read the chat boards and think those people have sufficient numbers to turn these things into blockbusters, which, of course, is folly.  They're also all trying to match the success of Chicago, but they forget that the studio did not shove Chicago down anyone's throat - they marketed it quietly and cleverly the first two months and let it find its audience without sending plants to every website to post how brilliant it was.  Only after it was finding an audience did Harvey and Bob start their insane campaign to win it Best Picture, a compaign that was so over the top that the Academy changed its rules for what studios can and can't do to promote a film to its members.

Good Afternoon!

Well, since my last set of postings, I've walked the dog yet again... And I have to say, there are quite a number of neighbor dogs in this housing development.  Alas, one of the neighbor dogs was running around without a leash while the owner was trying to unload some packages from her car, and since Iki tends to go into "territory" mode... Well, thankfully, the owner was able to get her big ole Chocolate Lab in the house before Iki's yelps and barks got too annoying or noticed.

And then when I made the final turn back onto my parents' street, we met up with a whole slew of "minis" - two toy poodles (one black, one white), a mini-dachshund, and a mini-schnauzer(?).  Needless to say, all those mini-barks ended up causing all of the leash-holders to start laughing.  Merry Christmas!

Isn't Mrs. Lovett's first name  Nellie?

In this version.

Stephen Sondheim composed the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with a book by Hugh Wheeler, based on the Bond play. The character of Marjorie Lovett was renamed Nellie Lovett for this version of the story.

In other news...

I believe I'm going to walk over to the Mall for my annual Christmas Eve Shopping Observation.  I started doing this a few years ago up in DC at the Pentagon City Mall.  Yes, I'm a relatively last-minute shopper myself, but it's always nice to know that there are others out there who truly cut it close to the wire.  ;)

*And I've also come across some amazing deals during my annual CESO.  I don't always take advantage of them, but they do give me an idea of the first set of stores I hit after Christmas.

I also just want and need to walk - like I'm used to doing in NYC on a daily basis.  Alas, the sidewalks here are practically non-existent, but I should be fine on the shoulders and medians.  I also want to check out Virginia Center Commons Mall.  It's still a relatively new mall, and I remember going there when it first opened.  Basically, it was not-so-good.  However, mall business, in general, here in Richmond has taken quite the upturn over the past couple of years, and, apparently, this mall survived it's initial dip in business and has become a sort of "destination shopping" place.  We shall see.

I'm having quite a festive day.  At noon I took myself to see ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS since the film's a bit mature for my beloved Charlotte, and I laughed a lot at a fable even DR MBarnum could follow about family, boy groups, show biz exploitation and Christmas.  It was fun.  After that, I took my last package to the post office and sent it to California.  I think it's time for a bit more work on Victor Herbert and his musical shows now, so I will return later.

I went on Friday Night to a 20 Screen Multiplex in Boca Raton for a 7:15 Showing.

The Entire Theatre Complex was like a Morgue. Very few People. I believe this weekend(especially Friday)was slow because of Christmas Shopping.

I hate to reference another chat board discussion, but I must ask - am I the only one who finds Topol in the FIDDLER ON THE ROOF film (when he was 35 years old) sexier than Johnny Depp in the SWEENEY film?

I have NEVER found Johnny Depp sexy. I think he can be a fine actor, funny or affecting as the situation warrants.

But not sexy to me. Not my type AT ALL.

I began my afternoon viewing by finishing THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT Part II which I had begun last night. Aspect ratios continue to drive me batty with these films. The Esther Williams finale was zoomed in and sides chopped giving very wonky compositions when the water skiers where in formations. The ANNIE GET YOUR GUN scenes also varied from 4:3 to widescreen. Just plain weird.

The Blu-rays of the 3 movie set came today, but I won't likely start them until tomorrow.

I laughed at all the electric plugs jammed into the two available outlets on the wall. How well I remember that at our house, too!

Most films released at holiday time have nothing to do with that holiday. It's the time of year where folks have more leisure time on their hands and film attendance takes a big bump. So, all types of films look to holiday times for their launches. Don't forget that several James Bond films, Harry Potter films, as well as ALL THAT JAZZ that I mentioned some days ago were released in the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season.

Does NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS, which led the holiday grosses this past weekend, have anything more to do with Christmas than SWEENEY TODD?

Grocery shopping is always crazy when it comes to holidays.  Today was no exception, with customers getting testier and testier by the hour.

There was one loony who was at the self-scan registers when I came back from my break.  Very high-maintenance, very much a drama queen.  Jen, who had been "assisting" her, passed her over to me as quickly as she could.  Well, Ms. Drama slaps this heirloom tomato into my hands and says "This won't scan!"  I calmly entered the correct Produce Look-Up Code into the terminal (there was no bar code).  At which time she loudly says "I don't want THAT tomato!  You've SQUEEZED it!"

At this point, my boss, Dixie, comes over.  "I don't want that tomato!" Ms. D knows nothing about turning down the decibles.  "He SQUEEZED it!"  "I'll get you a new tomato," Dixie replies, leaves for the produce department, then returns.  "Will this tomato do?" she asked.  Ms. D sort of nodded, and Dixie nodded at me to tend to the other three self-scan registers.

Much later, after my shift ended, Dixie admitted that she had simply gone to the produce department and returned with the exact same tomato.  I have my reasons for liking my boss.

I just programmed the DVR for a boatload of holiday musical offerings over the next 48 hours.  Worth checking out your local PBS programming.  Plus fun to see what's going on at the National Cathedral and other institutions which broadcast their services.

I thought they released SWEENEY TODD over the Christmas season because it's set in poverty-torn London, as another holiday classic is. . .

Depp NOT sexy?  Oh, my!  I think he's very sexy!  CRY-BABY, PRIVATE RESORT, DEAD MAN,  BENNIE & JOON,  GILBERT GRAPE and those PIRATES movies for quirky sexiness. . .I even think he's sexy in THE 9TH GATE!  Not too shoddy in THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE, either IMHO. . .

Leo. . .well, y'all can have him as your stocking stuffer. . .he's bland, bland as Dorothy Collins' APPLESAUCE, IMHO. . .

Yes, Especially Benny & Joon & definitely NOT 21 Jump Street. And he just looked goofy in Nightmare on Elm Street.

As for TOD:

PUSHING DAISIES
LOST
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
CALIFORNICATION
UGLY BETTY
THE MORMONS

As for individual episodes:
PUSHING DAISIES' premiere, which I've now watched several times.
LOST's first five minutes of "A Tale of Two Cities,"  the entire episodes of "The Man Behind the Curtain," Through the Looking-Glass" and "Expose."
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES' Halloween episode, tornado episode and the introductory episodes with Dana Delany's Katherine Mayfair.
Pilot and "LOL," the fifth episode.
UGLY BETTY's season premiere, the WICKED episode.

I'm not fond of HEROES as much this season, but, maybe time will tell.

Fondest Christmas Eve Greetings to one and all!

I couldn’t let the day pass without wishing my HHW Family the very merriest and joyous Christmas ever!

I didn’t post yesterday because I did something foolish.   The duplex on the West side of me has been empty since I came home from Pittsburgh.   The owner is not very good about keeping his side of the fence cleaned up.  There are those mulberry trees that grow like weeds all up and down the fence on his side.  I'm not joking.  You have to keep on top of them or you will have a full grown (20 foot plus) tree before you know it.

So I went over sawed every one of the darn things down with a hand saw.   I didn’t chop them up or drag them up front for the garbage man to pick up.  Let him do that and he had best not say a word to me.

You have to cut those trees down in the winter months because of the sap.  In the winter it stays towards the bottom of the tree making it easier to cut.

Anyway, after doing all that hand cutting, my arthritis kicked in and my entire right arm hurt so badly that I didn’t feel like doing anything.

I even considered taking one of the prescription pain pills I had for the surgery but they always make me feel so weak/dizzy/sick and knock me out that I didn’t feel it was worth it.  I just took a couple Advil, pulled out the old heating pad and kept moving it from my hand/elbow/shoulder until the pain was to a manageable level.

I received a lot of wonderful Christmas cards today from George, TCB, VixMom (the Vixter is turning into such a lovely young lady in front of our eyes) and others.   I also received a package from Pittsburgh with a “Do NOT open until Xmas” sticker on it.   I shall honor it and promise not to open it.  I didn’t say I would not shake, rattle, fold, spindle, etc, etc, etc.

  ;) :D ;)

 :D ;D :D I like your boss too!

Where in tarnation IS everyone.  I am now ready for company.  Of course, we don't begin until six, and only a few show up then, but that won't stop ME from eating!  The sauce is simmering and is almost there (I futz with it until the last minute - alternating a pinch of this and a pinch of that until it's to my liking).  I've started the water boiling for the pasta, because I'm making four pounds of it and it takes quite a while for the water to boil.

The taters are in the oven.  Simple steaks and taters tonight, with a wedge of iceberg, nicely dressed of course.  Maybe some sauteed mushers in with the baked taters.

Sure, we'll be feasting on a roast beef tomorrow at Magic Mommy's, probably with taters again, and lordy knows what all else.  But at least tonight der Brucer will be getting the beef and spuds done right.

I have heard der Brucer creeping quietly downstairs, to raid the downstairs refrigerator.  I believe that he is going to check on the quality of the egg nog I made last night, to make sure it will be good enough for tomorrows goings on.

Here's a question: Who out there loves egg nog?  And who isn't partial to the mix?

Der B's verdict?  It's "smooth as silk."  I'll trust his judgement.  (All families should have it as easy with their differences.)

I had Italian-buttered sausage ravioli for dinner.

After work, I needed to nap.  It's not easy getting up at 4:45am.
It was a very busy day at Borders.
It was also a very happy day - customers, managers, co-workers were all in great, friendly moods, except for the opening manager who said in her morning meeting comments that she's sick and tired of having to wake up at four in the morning and come to work!  It was quite a strange meeting.
I got hugs from two very unexpected sources, and one from an expected one.  Some things are beginning to show a lot of promise. . .

There's no 10pm showing of SWEENEY tonight, so I'll hit the first available showing tomorrow after the family get-together, which Mum has decided she's not attending.  For now.  Tomorrow she may have changed her mind again!    Her trip for her cortisone shot last Thursday did wear her out, plus that day was cold, chilly and rainy.  Tomorrow it's supposed to be nice, so, if she wants to go out, I'm more than happy to take her.

Tonight, I'm introducing her to the joys of A CHRISTMAS STORY on TBS' marathon showing.  I can't believe, nor can she, that she'd never seen it.

BUT my favorite IMAGE of the entire season is Mrs. Betty Draper (Donna Reed with an edge) - standing in her backyard in her negligee, with a Salem hanging out of her mouth, and shooting the neighbor's carrier pigeons one by one.....MAD MEN.....

My favorite new series of the year....TORCHWOOD a close second.

I guess you could say I've had a Blu-Christmas, or at least a Blu-Christmas Eve.

I began my evening with the Blu-ray of THE OMEGA MAN. It had an interesting premise for a sci-fi movie, and it was eerie seeing LA all deserted as Heston prowled the streets. The Heston scenes looked really great in high def (and the old fashioned fake blood they used to use comes across as tomato paste now), but any time there was second unit work or stock footage inserted into the film, the quality of the image fell drastically. The old mono sound dates the picture, too, as does the "jive" talk that Rosalind Cash uses throughout the picture.

Title: Re:THE DAY OF THE DO
Post by: Matt H. on December 24, 2007, 08:26:18 PM
Then, I went ahead and started the Blu-rays of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT beginning with the first movie. All those "zoomed to be widescreen" images are still there, and in high def, it ruins the sharpness when they do that accentuating the grain structure of the image and, as I said before, throwing off compositions sometimes with people's heads being chopped off. I noticed on THE GREAT ZIEGFELD one, Sinatra says in the voiceover, "If this lavish number could be done at all today, it might look something like this" which, I guess, gives them license to crop the sides and blow up the image, but no such pronouncements are made for GOOD NEWS, HARVEY GIRLS, SHOW BOAT, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, or the other films that get this treatment.

I also watched all of the special features on the first disc. It's the same special features as on the sDVD versiion: the promo featurette, the 25th anniversary footage (embarrassing when George Murphy forgets Errol Flynn and the poor man stands there waiting to be introduced and never is), the Robert Osborne introduction, and the George and Alana Harrison TV special on the premiere night interviewing six or so of the stars in attendance that night.

All of the vintage stuff looks really bad - faded, very soft, and loaded with scratches and dirt.

After centuries of wondering, men can finally work out if their partner really is 'fine' or not thanks to a new dress that changes colour depending on a woman's mood.

The Bubelle Dress is made up of two layers, the inner layer contains biometric sensors that pick up a person's emotions and projects them in colours onto the second layer, the outer textile.

The sensitive dress, which was designed by electronical giants Philips, works by monitoring physical changes associated with different feelings.

Emotions such as stress, arousal, or fear affect the body's temperature and sweat levels and these generate the light that changes the pattern and colour on the dress.

This would make a great fabric for church vestments - if the priest's garb turned red when the altar boys walked by...well...

I keep trying to post pictures from tonight's "do" at Cousin Debra's.

The pictures "won't" cooperate.  I've resized them to near miniscule dimensions (thumbnail size at Photobucket) and they still post FULL size here.

It's exasperatin' in the extreme...especially since several photos reduced nicely.

I can't do anything with them here, and I'm sick of trying.  So they'll ALL just have to wait.

Party has basically ended, although one group of people always end up coming around ten-thirty, so we'll see if that happens this year.  We had a lovelier than lovely group of folks, about fifteen in all, and it was ever so comfy and fun and a LOT of spaghetti was consumed, as well as tuna pasta salad, and our various and sundried desserts.  All in all - splendiferous.

In other news...

Well, VA Center Commons Mall is pretty much like I remembered it.  It's basically a mid-level mall trying to be a upscale one.  It was busy, but not crazy busy.  I did stop by the Virginia Diner kiosk, and I picked up a few tins of their famous peanuts, almonds and cashews - they were marked down 50%.  -I was "good", and passed on buying the chocolate-covered peanut brittle.  I also bought an Almond Milk Bubble Tea from one of the drink stands.  Yummy!

There were still plenty of people lined up to have their pictures taken with Santa, and the Food Court happened to have live entertainment today: a young woman singing original songs.  Of course, none of her songs had anything to do with the holidays.  In fact, I'm not sure what any of her songs were about.  She sang loudly and her guitar was in desperate need of tuning.  But at least her mic was working fine.  ;)

After my walk through the Mall, I headed across the parking lot to the movie theatre complex.  By the time I got there, there were only three movies that were about to start: "The Golden Compass", "I Am Legend" and "Sweeney Todd".  However, when I got to the automated ticketing machine, there was a ticket for "Sweeney Todd" sitting in the dispenser.  Hmm... Well, I passed a few minutes by checking out the showtimes for tomorrow and Wednesday.  No one came back to the machine, so I went ahead and took the ticket, and saw "Sweeney Todd" again.

It was another basically deserted theatre, and, thankfully, no talkative teenage girls sitting down the row from me this time.  I enjoyed the movie the second time, and I took the opportunity to concentrate on some of the elements that certain reviewers were not too keen on.  I've read a couple of reviews - both "professional" and amateur - that thought the boy playing Toby was as stiff as a board throughout, and never changed his expression.  Wrong!  It may not be the most nuanced performance in the world, but I have a sense that may have been Tim Burton's doing rather than the actor's.  I was also hoping to decipher the one piece of dialogue I could not understand the first time, but it still puzzled me.  Does anyone know what Judge Turpin says when Anthony runs up to him right after Johanna is carted away?  Something about "Here I stand.... "  ???

I had planned to walk back to my parents' house after the movie, but once I realized that it had gotten colder and that there are no street lights along the road back to my parents housing development, I went ahead and called for my Dad to come pick me up.  I felt like I was a freshman in high school again.  ;)

After I got back home, I then headed back out again and over to Steve's place.  I wanted to drop off his Christmas present, and since neither of us had had dinner yet, we were going to head out to get something to eat.  Well, when I got over there, we both "realized" that it was Christmas Eve, and that none of our old stand-bys would still be open at the hour.  And, after a few phone calls to see if anyone might still be open, well... Steve checked to see what he had in his fridge, and I ended up cooking dinner for both of us.  He had a nice pork tenderloin, so I cut that up into thin slices, seared them in his cast iron skillet for a bit, then improvised a sauce/glaze out of some leftover canned pineapple slices and juice and some Heinz 57 sauce.  It actually came out quite well, although, I did end up smoking up his apartment quite a bit.  -But it looked cool.

After dinner, we drove over to the James Center to take pics of their Christmas display.  Then we drove up to the Jefferson Hotel to take pics of their Christmas display.  Then we drove a bit through the Fan to take some pics of the houses there.  Alas, no one had any really tacky house lights up - at least on the blocks we checked out.  Ah, well.  Then we headed back to Steve's place, where we went up on the roof of his building and took a few shots of the "illuminated" skyline of Richmond.  -And, yes, pics will be posted.

All in all, a very nice night, and Steve may come over tomorrow to join us for our Christmas dinner.  We shall see.

So... As I was saying earlier, our first stop was the James Center in downtown Richmond.  Each year, they set up this great display of lights, and each year it seems to grow just a little bigger.  This is basically Richmond's Christmas Tree.  A few days after Thanksgiving, they have a their "Grand Illumination" where they flick the switch, and a good chunk of downtown Richmond lights up.  They even outline the buildings in lights - which you can see in the background of one of some of the pics.  -And which you'll be able to see clearly in the last photo post.

Then we drove up to the Jefferson Hotel (http://www.jeffersonhotel.com/).  The Jefferson is a truly beautiful hotel, and even moreso at Christmas.  When we entered the lobby, we saw this:

If you look to the right in the pic I posted above, you can see the Gingerbread House that is set up in the lobby.  Alas, due to that pesky marble column in the way, it was hard to get a complete shot of the house, but here is a detail:

Underneath the Christmas tree, there is a display of folk dolls - all of which can be purchased in the gift shop, of course.  There are some classic figures (Santa, The Three Kings, Nutcrackers, etc.), as well as some historical ones too:

Great night pictures, Jose!  I wish I had a camera that could take pictures at night that well.

I didn't think I did until Steve looked at my camera and asked what "that" did and what "that" meant.  Well, after exploring some of the menus I had never seen before, and after getting some guidance from Steve about setting my exposure levels, I was able to take those pics.

He also gave me a great tip in regards to keeping the camera steady while taking a pic with a long exposure: If there is a "solid" object nearby - a building, a pillar, a wall, etc. - and if you can still get the proper angle/view, just place your camera against it while you take the picture to help steady your camera.  It's not a foolproof method, but it does help immensely.  *However, if you have one of those new digital cameras with the anti-shake feature, well, then just make sure that that is turned on.

My camera was a Christmas gift from my parents last year.  It does have a night setting and I've set it on solid objects (my car, usually), but it's just not good enough to really make much difference for night pictures. :-\ But for the most part, it does take pictures during the day or with the flash that are good enough.

Try turning off your Flash when in Night mode - my camera will still use the flash in night mode.  That will cause the camera to take a longer exposure.  Additionally, another trick I use is to use the self-timer, this way I'm not pushing the button down and moving the camera while I'm taking the pic.
