Title: THE WAYWARD WIND
Post by: bk on December 27, 2007, 12:08:43 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wayward and had wind, and now it is time for you to post until the wayward cows come home - right now, they're gone with the wind.

Welcome eleven GUESTS.  I'm listening to a home-grown CD of the soundtrack to Goodbye, Charlie by Andre Previn - absolutely delightful.

I don't think I saw ten really good theatrical performances, but I did see (and love):

Hairspray (the tour came to Olympia and I ushered for both shows...it was wonderful)
Whistle Down the Wind (the physical production was very good ;))
Young Frankenstein (saw it twice in Seattle...very funny)

That's all that I can think of right now.

Welcome eleven GUESTS.  I'm listening to a home-grown CD of the soundtrack to Goodbye, Charlie by Andre Previn - absolutely delightful.

I always liked the score to "Goodbye, Charlie" and actually bought the sheet music to the title tune on my way home from school in 1965 (64? 66?) even though I couldn't read music and played no instrument.   Go figure.  Bobby Darrin's version of the title song was pretty good, and it brings a smile the very rare times it is ever played.

This is the moment.

Yes, the very one moment I will have to tell you all I am relying upon the wayward wind to help me in my flight back to the Bay Area.

I leave Johnston at 10 a.m. for Columbia SC.  From Columbia, I shall depend upon the wayward wind to waft toward Atlanta around 1 p.m.

At 2:40 p.m., a very wayward wind must provide the updraft to get my Delta 747 (or associated model) into the air and westward bound.

All times are EST, of course.

On PST, I shall arrive at 4:45 p.m. (or thereabouts).

Hopefully -- with great HOPE, actually -- I shall engage a door-to-door shuttle for the East Bay shortly after getting my luggage and be on my way home.

Pray for Barbara Pulliam's son Ron to arrive safely and in a timely manner.  He needs every bit of help he can get!

:D

We simplified this year...no gift exchange.  And it made for a much more stress-free December, let me tell you!

We had a lovely time.  Many wonderful foodstuffs [and too much of them] were consumed.  We took some great walks, and laughed... a lot.

This is fun and thanks to elmore for pointing this out to us:  Peter Filichia on theatermania.com named Danny Binstock "Best Actor in a Musical" for 2007 for the title role in The Last Starfighter - not just for the summer festivals this time, but from everything Peter Filichia had seen in 2007.  (Audra McDonald was Best Actress in a Musical, as a frame of reference.)  See the third paragraph at the link below.

(And no, we seriously don't know who Skip Keonig - also mentioned in the article - is!)

Sadly, it's only the beginning for Virgin Megastores - as I mentioned before, the entire chain is on its way out.  Someone who is pretty in the know told me so and that's when I reported it earlier this year.  I was in Virgin here a few weeks ago and there was literally no one in the store except me and the employees.

I feel that one of the big mistakes they made was separating the brick and mortars from their internet presence.  A few years ago, I disovered that you could not redeem one of their gift cards on line, nor could you learn your balance on line.  You had to make a special trip to the store, and you had to know you were going in advance, and remember to take the gift card with you.  That made them much more difficult to use than amazon.com or especially, Barnes and Nobel, where you could use your gift card in store or on-line.   I think this has caused them a significant loss of business.

That's funny about Paramount splitting up THE MOD SQUAD season. I just got the review copy for SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH's third season, and it's the entire season.

Maybe it's the total number of episodes per season that dictates whether they'll break it up or not.

Well, we are awaiting the "big storm"--supposedly 7 inches (there ya go, TCB) of snow today.  That of course makes today's Cinderella performances a crapshoot.  Time will tell.

Of course, a month ago, I saw and greatly enjoyed the national tour of THE DROWSY CHAPARONE, but I can't think of any others I ventured out to see in 2007. I was really busy with the viewing and reviewing from February on, and since we didn't make a trip to NYC this year, that cut down on theater attendance for me, too.

Though it wasn't a Paramount release, I think the vintage show that put the kibosh on complete seasons was Lost in Space (Season 1), which was a disaster.  Right after that the longer (like more than 26 episodes or so) seasons of vintage shows starting getting split into "volumes," including the second and third seasons of LIS itself.

Hello, all!

I am working my way through all of the wonderful Christmas postings!

I'm still 5 days behind, but wanted to pop in and give a very merry belated Christmas wishes to all.

We had a very exhausting holiday. We had planned to do Christmas dinner here for our family, but as of the 21st, our dining room was still full of boxes that hadn't been upacked. So there was several days of that, then I refinished the floor and we started moving things in.

We also had several visitors staying with us, so we had to make the extra bedroom useable instead of a storage place for more boxes, and buy linens and things.

We also had much debate about a very large piece of furniture, a sideboard, and how we would be able to pick it up from the refinishers in time for xmas dinner. And how we would be able to move the large china cabinet in place. The base was fine, but the top was very heavy with 4 glass doors and there was no way the two of us could move it.

So, in short, the house was a crazy mess until Christmas eve, when we went to the  mountains to visit my father.

Greg was working so hard on getting the stove installed and dealing with his stuff that I would have felt very guilty sitting at the computer and reading everyone's posts, as much as I'd have liked to.

After getting the wrong instructions from Sears the first time we ran the gas and electrical lines, (when the installers couldn't finish the job) Greg re-ran the gas and electrical lines himself to the specifications (revision D) that Sears didn't give us the first time.

Then we tried to move the stove into position, but the flexible gas line was still not fitting around the gas supply line. I think poor Greg is at his wit's end with this.

We didn't know whether we would have a working stove in time for the dinner, so I bought some yummy side dishes that we could microwave (thank god for Whole Foods!) and the turkey was one that my brother had ordered--a smoked one.

By the 23rd, we decided that we would cook dinner. Even though the stove wasn't in place, it was close enough to get by for a day. I still had a dream about the house catching fire and forgetting to rescue the cats. Anxiety!!!

That IS the first time I remember that happening, but Fox shot themselves in the foot with their ridiculous overpricing. (They did the same with the first season of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW. Subsequent seasons have been far more reasonably priced.)

My Dad died four weeks to the day after Betsy and I were married--it was like he was waiting for me to finally grow up, LOL.  ;)  Betsy and I had gone out for a walk and when we came home there was that shocking message on our machine.  It was horrible.  I console myself thinking about my father's incredible accomplishments and knowing that he lived a relatively long (81 years), unbelievably full life.

Strangely, when my Mom died two years later, it just didn't have the same emotional impact for me, but that probably says more about my relationship with my mother than anything else.

LOL! True for her and almost (but not quite) for me. However, much of my life's work and pleasure is to be found inside the four walls of my house. When one works from home and also plays at home, the telephone and the occasional meal out with friends becomes a life. My life anyway.

We simplified this year...no gift exchange.  And it made for a much more stress-free December, let me tell you!

Between all of our families---my father's, (lots of kids!) my mother's, Greg's, our clients and a few friends, we normally have a list of about 50 people on our list. So we rarely have the chance to shop for each other, and it's usually something practical we need anyway.

I have never figured out a way to make this list shorter!

Big hugs to Elmore!

When I saw my Dad at Christmas, we talked about how he had outlived all his siblings, even his younger ones. He has been taken off some of his depression medication and looked so much better and seemed to be in a better frame of mind.

It still hurts me that my brother won't go to see him, but after years of trying, I am through trying to get them together. Both are too stubborn to make the effort and each blames the other for their alienation.

RE: a question I believe DR TCB asked last night re: the SWEENEY TODD movie.

I think the question was something like why was i so bothered by the white make-up in the movie (when it is also white in the stage version).

SPOILERS I GUESS.

In the movie it wasn't just the make-up but the overall completely stark and grim nature of the film. It's hard to explain, but in the stage version we have only the stage. But in the movie the only colors used are black and white. I really was not prepared for the bleakness.

In the stage version Angela Lansbury is so funny.  The role is part comedy.  So it makes sense to me that she looks like a clown!

Maybe it's just more noticeable on the big screen. But i found the white faces on depp and helena actually distracting.

But that's just me.

DR Jennifer - ...It's all part of Tim Burton's style, his look.  I knew going in to the movie - well the theatre - that it was a Tim Burton film, and that would mean a lot of "touches".  As far as the makeup being distracting, well, there is a heightened look to most of the film: the scenery, the lighting, the costuming.  -Just look at all that CGI - well-done CGI in the opening sequence on the boat.  If anything, the stark makeup sets the characters of Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett apart from everyone else.

*That's also a major reason I went to see the movie a second time.  Besides being distracted by the two girls who were constantly chatting throughout the movie the movie, I also found myself being "distracted" by a lot of the Tim Burton-isms, all that style.  It was nice just to sit there and let the movie "happen" the second time.  I liked the movie a lot.  I'm still not sure I'd call it a great movie, and I'm pretty sure I would not call it a "masterpiece" (like A.O. Scott did in the NY Times). But it is a very good movie, and a wonderful adaptation of the stage musical.

DR edisaurus - 50?!?!?!  I have a hard enough time gathering the gifts for my nephew and three nieces.  Thankfully, my brothers and I stopped exchanging presents a couple of years ago - I think that coincided with the birth of the first son/nephew.  However, if we happen to come across something that someone else would like, well, we go ahead and get it for them.  But there's never a sense of "obligation" to give - or to exchange between us.

Birthdays, on the other hand, are a different story.  ;)

I believe that today is the 80th anniversary of the opening of Show Boat on Broadway!

Hmm... I just checked the IBDB, and they don't list Show Boat opening 80 years ago.  However, when you bring up the show listing, it does say it opened on December 27, 1927.  ???  *There is a notation that the entry has not been verified, and I'm also wondering since the show did not have any previews...

However, other shows that opened on this date...

The School for Scandal, 1909
All in Fun, 1940
Clash by Night,   1941
Angna Enters, 1942
Home of the Brave, 1945
Temper the Wind, 1946
Topaze, 1947
The Madwoman of Chaillot, 1948
How Long Till Summer, 1949
The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, 1965
At the Drop of Another Hat, 1966
Purlie, 1972

And a great TOD!

I saw many shows this year.  My very favorites were (in no particular order):

Follies at Encores!
Gypsy at Encores!
Coram Boy
Intimate Exchanges
Herringbone (at Williamstown Theatre Festival)
Dead Man's Cell Phone (in Washington, District of Columbia)
The Last Starfighter  :-) (saw it 7 times it was so good!)
August: Osage County
Gypsy at Encores! and
Gypsy at Encores!

And I saw some terrific cabaret performances this year. Among the highlights:
Jason Wynn at Helen's
Liz Callaway at The Metropolitan Room
Lennie Watts at The Metropolitan Room
Baby Jane Dexter at The Metropolitan Room
Eric Michael Gilett at The Metropolitan Room
Kristine Zbornik at The Metropolitan Room
Lorinda Lisitza at The Metropolitan Room

And Oy!  I saw some real clunkers - but that's a whole different TOD.

On-stage seats at spring Awakening were also a special treat.

My favorite Christmas present, by far, was the soundtrack to my favorite movie, THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T, complete with cut songs, sent by our own bk. I've probably listened to it at least a dozen times already, but thankfully, in my car. Greg is the type of listener that doesn't want to hear something more than once at a sitting, where I will play a song 10 times in a row, listening to different details and would drive any normal person crazy.

That's kind of how it worked it my family after the kids started having kids.  The kids made out like bandits!  Since then, I quit paying attention to holidays, and if the right gift happened to be there for someone, I'd give it to them then and just ask them to act surprised  at Christmas.  :o

The Five Candidates for Queen for a Day:

1. Lady and husband living in a trailer with four daughters.  She wanted wanted bunk beds for the older girls.

2.  Lady had a 15-year-old son who had polio and he was in a body cast.  She wanted a hospital gurney so she could take him outside sometimes.

3.  Lady and her husband had bought a grocery store and needed stock to sell.  They had no retail experience and had only 64 cents in the register.

4.  Lady had two daughters and her husband had been accidentally shot in a hunting accident a few months before.  She had no education and wanted to go to beauty school to make money to raise her children.

5.  Lady had an 18-year-old son with a rheumatic heart.  He was home schooled and she wanted an encyclopedia to help him with his learning, a rug for his cement floor, and paint to make his basement room brighter.

By the end of the show, I was an emotional wreck.  Number Four was Queen for a Day....and got to go to beauty school and learn how to be a beautician....

All from one of the nicest night spots in Hollywood..The Moulin Rouge!

DR JRand, that Queen for a Day episode was sooooo depressing...I don't know how anyone could watch that program regularly.  I felt so bad for the gals who did not win (actually I was embarassed for the grocery store lady...what did they do with all of the money from the goods sold! I think hubby really had a gambling problem...lol)...and felt even worse for the fact that they all aired their wretched, sad stories on national television to be voted on!

And people think reality shows today are terrible!

And that host seems way too gleeful, as if he really dosn't give a hoot about how sad the stories are.

Good Afternoon!

DR elmore - I await my return from the provinces too. -Although, I have to say, I'm kind of surprised that I haven't gotten "antsy" yet about not being in New York City right now.  In fact, I'm finding myself sooooooo in vacation mode.  It's been great waking up each morning, and knowing that I have nothing(!) to do, nothing I have to do, and even nothing I want to do.

But I am looking forward to flying back to NYC on the first day of 2008.  :)

(tune of "That's How Young I Feel")

On body type, so you best start fasting
'Cause that's how weird you'll feel

Those singing lessons don't work, but darn 'em
The casting's run by Jose and Barnum
So that's how weird you'll feel

Better watch for Jose, he grabs
Any body with six-pack abs
Down there by the levy

Got a couch and it's reupholstered
Prepare to have your libido bolstered
If you've got buns of steel

Oh, Honey, 'cause that's how weird you'll feel

LOS ANGELES — Some gifts from Kris Kringle are better kept wrapped.
A man in a Santa hat was arrested Sunday night for investigation of drunken driving after he was spotted outside Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood wearing a wig, a red lace camisole and a purple G-string, police said.
"We are pretty sure this is not the Santa Claus," Deputy Chief Ken Garner said.
The suspect was booked into jail after his blood-alcohol level measured just above the state's legal limit of .08, police said. He was later released on $5,000 bail.
The man, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 280 pounds, also wore black leg warmers and black shoes. His car was towed to an impound yard, police said.

Then I watched the first 2 hours of ZODIAC. Obviously, I still have a half hour to go. Several phone calls and some other issues kept interrupting the screening, but I am really enjoying it. The actors are really playing a fascinating series of characters, all so individual.

The film's look is kind of antiqued in those subdued shades of brown. The transfer is very nice.

I really enjoyed the film.  Scared me.

I truly liked this movie, too.  I had read both of the books a while ago, and I though that David Fincher did a remarkable job with his direction.  Great cast.  Great attention to detail as well.

I find most of the posters on b'wayworld to be insufferable, and not just the tweens, although they certainly seem to be the demographic of that site.  They are amongst the most illiterate, silly, YOUNG (and not in a good way) people, and perfect examples of their entitled generation.  I occasionally feel the need to set them straight with factual information - they don't like it when I do because they know everything at fourteen.

Title: Re:THE WAYWARD WIND
Post by: Kerry on December 27, 2007, 04:06:12 PM
I recently sent this message to a few friends:

"Why?" was no doubt the first word as I exited the womb,  and I have always been determined to find the answer.    This is something that is an asset in that I have not settled for the easy answer or untruths, have learned many things (despite being a pain in the ass in doing so),  and it has even been key to my survival.  It has also been a downfall  in that I don't accept things easily or let go when I should.

Now, there are a myriad of answers to "why?" depending on the circumstances (good and bad).  I have come to the determination that a few basic answers pretty much cover it all.

My answers to "Why?" are:
 --"Because"
--"Because I said so."
--"Because I'm bigger than you."
--"Why not?"
--"Why not you?"
--Because I am supposed to learn some lesson.
--Because I am supposed to learn to ask for help and not just try to do it all on my own.
My all -time favorite answer to "Why?' and which is quite appropriate and legitimate under certain situations is "Why?  Because we like you!"

Listening to the revival cast recording of The Pajama Game produced by Mr. Harry Connick, who should leave the producing to others who know how to do cast albums.  It is no mean feat to make a twenty-two piece band (expanded from the show's twelve) sound like eight.  And then there's Mr. Harry Connick the star of the show, and I'm sorry and apologize to his fans everywhere, but if I never have to listen to this cut-rate Sinatra wannabe again it will be too soon.  If I want to listen to Sinatra I'll listen to Sinatra.

One has the feeling that Mr. Connick thinks he is original, even though all one has to do is listen to know he spent his entire young years listening to and imitating not only Mr. Sinatra's phrasing, but his unique pronunciations and way of singing vowels and consonants.

It played very well live - and was one of the toughest tickets to get for its whole run.
It had a very good cast beyond HC.  And really transformed Kelli O'Hara into the "it" girl of the season.  The role is so different from the part of Clara that she played in Light in the Piazza, and many questioned whether she could pull it off and was the right choice.  But she really performed the part beautifully, inproving consistently over the course of the run.  He, on the other hand, had a difficult time at first - he seemed somewhat uncomfortable on stage.  And the final scene had him shirtless, which he seemed especially uncomfortable with.  While he is not a great stage actor, he certainly was a crowd pleaser, and from what I understand, got thunderous applause after each performance.

As for the singing, it played really well on stage, but I think they "jazzed" up some of the numbers for the recording, as well as the other recording he made with Kelli - also very jazzy.  Also, it was staged very well, so numbers such as Hey There, while perhaps weak as a purely vocal track, were much more compelling when watching the live performance.   I don't think it translated very well from the stage to the recording.  But in person, it was a wonderful production.

Hi Ginny.  If I had gotten out for a walk this afternoon, I wouldn't have had the time to stop by and chat.  It would have been even nicer if I could have walked in the morning, before it snowed, as I originally planned to do.  Alas, I had to stay home & watch Sherlock to let him out if he needed.  He is having bathroom issues in the form of blood in his stools.

It began snowing as I was headed into town to get a 24 hour heart monitor put on.  Keith was kind enough to drive me, to be safe my car didn't get stuck on the road when I returned.  Thank goodness, a neighbor's car did get stuck and there is no way I would have gotten around it.  I wonder what the drive up my road would have done to the heart register-LOL.

Of course the day I go for the heart monitor the palpitations I have been experiencing since taking the anti-inflammatory, have almost stopped.  I'm sure they will return as soon as the 24 hours are up.

DR Julie - thanks for the Pajama Game report.  Richard and I tried to get tickets for it - we were in NYC for our 25th wedding anniversary when it was in previews and opening.  Nothing doing...

I know!  It took a lot of people here by surprise - just how much demand there was for tickets.  I remember, on a whim, deciding on the day of the first preview that I wanted to see the show that night, and going to the box office a few hours before the performance to get a ticket.  Usually, you can always get a ticket to a first preview.  When I got there, not only did I find that the performance was completely sold out, but there was already a fairly lengthy cancellation line filled with people hoping to get a seat for that night.  I knew right there and then that it was going to be a hot ticket.

Good Evening!

I'm back from the movies...

"The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" (http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thewaterhorse/) - What a surprisingly touching movie this turned out to be.  Yes, you do have to just forget about some "practicalities" while watching the movie, but I found myself swept up in it's story, and quite moved at the end.  Alex Etel, who I loved in "Millions", plays another little boy who's dealing with the absence of a parent.  Then add to that some of the machinations of World War II, and how the whole legend of the Loch Ness Monster began, and you've got quite the tale.

I watched some television episodes that DR MBARNUM sent me.

MR BK - featured prominently in the prizes on QUEEN FOR A DAY is lunch at The Murphy House.....did you or any other DRs from LA ever eat there?

Well, Jack, I ate there almost every day until I was 17. Oh? You mean a Murphy House RESTAURANT? Never heard of it. My uncle, Niel Murphy, had several restaurants, but I don't recall any of them being called The Murphy House.

Then after a dinner at the Food Court at the mall across the way, I went ahead and stuck around for the sneak preview of...

27 Dresses (http://www.27dressesthemovie.com/)

It doesn't open officially until January 11, 2008.  In any case...

Yes, it's a "chick flick", but it's a chick flick with a lot of heart.  At least I thought it had some heart to it.  Katherine Heigl plays a perpetual bridesmaid, who suddenly finds herself planning the wedding of her younger sister.  Alas, her younger sister just happens to be marrying the Katherine Heigl's (at least her character's) boss.  -Who she also happens to be secretly and hopelessly in love with.  Then you add James Marsden to the mix, and, well... You'll have to see for yourself.  ;)

The movie felt a little long to me, but it all worked.  And I have to say that Katherine Heigl gets to wear some truly stunning dresses in this movie - as well as some hysterically fun and funny bad ones.  -Thus the "27 Dresses".

-And on a personal note... Can James Marsden get any HOTTER?!?!?!?!?!?

I also listened to part of the other commentary on the disc. The producer, writer, and author James Ellroy talking about the case and the way the film portrayed it. Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr.'s comments were intercut with the other three men's chatter.

Tomorrow I'll watch the second disc which has quite a lengthy list of featurettes.

Avg ticket price of GREASE is $102.96?  "Redic" - as Velma would say.

Redic indeed!  Or course, the average price for Jersey Boys still hovers around $128.00!  -Which means that none of their seats are sold at a discount, and that they still do a good business in the "Premium Seats" too.

As for Grease's average ticket price for last week.. Well, that's quite interesting too, especially since the attendance is listed at 80%.  -And they were on TKTS too.  So, I guess they also had a bunch of "Premium Seats" sold too.

Since most theatre's raised their prices to $125.00/ticket last week for the Christmas week rush, that probably contributed to their "high" average price per ticket.  Alas, the regular top ticket price is now $120.00 or $110.00 (plus theatre restoraton fees), so...  *And some shows will be going up to $125.00 for good starting in January.

-Yes, $125.00 is a lot of money, but I'm still amazed at how some of the road houses (the Pantages in LA, the Kennedy Center in DC, etc.) are charging more for their "regularly" priced orchestra seats.  The Kennedy Center Opera House now tops out at $165!  And I still remember seeing Hairspray at the Pantages four years ago, and that top ticket was $150!

Well, my Sweeney Todd soundtrack CD plays fine on my work computer, both CD players here at home, and my eMac.  We're curious to test it in DH Richard's car.

How old is your car/CD player, DR Ginny?  Some older players get confused by some newer discs especially if they also have some embedded computer content on them, or if they have a lot of music/time on them.  I have an old portable CD player that will not play any CD that has more than 60 minutes on it.

NY POST - A YEAR AGO (http://media.fastclick.net/w/safepop.cgi?cid=73541&mid=199147&sid=17025&c=56)
Quote
* ROW Z AT $400 A POP

January 5, 2007 -- TIME to peer into the Shubert Alley crystal ball to see what 2007 has in store for the theater and, to quote the great Elaine Stritch, "all the charming people in it."
...
Producers are in love with premium-priced seats. At some hit shows, premium seats, which retail for between $250 and $300, have crept all the way back to row U.

Screams one ticket broker: "How dare they cut into my business!"

Premium tickets speed up recoupment, level out ever-escalating weekly production costs, and make producers and creators of hit shows seriously rich.

The problem, though, is that Broadway has become like the rest of Manhattan: If you're not rich, you don't belong here. The orchestra section at "Mary Poppins" looks like an assembly at Chapin or St. Bernard's. Middle-class and working-class families have pretty much been priced out of the market.

Prediction: Orchestra sections at hot shows in 2007 will become the equivalent of luxury boxes at the Garden. Almost every seat will be "premium," with prices shooting up to between $350 and $400. Broadway audiences will be richer - and whiter - than ever.

Well, it looks like we're all heading up to Fairfax tomorrow.  I was actually thinking of taking the train up, but when I asked my Dad if he wanted to head up to Fairfax he said he had been thinking about it too.  He wants to check out some car dealerships.  It also turns out that my brother, Jay, is flying in from San Diego tomorrow, and since he's heading up to Philly on Saturday to spend the weekend and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day (his birthday) with his girlfriend and her family, it looks like tomorrow night will be the only time that the whole family can get together (since I fly back on January 1).

It actually works out great for me since I wanted to pay a few visits up in NoVA, and I want to be back here in Richmond on Saturday to help out with the birthday party for Steve's mother too.  :)

She would normally sleep with my dad. However, after he passed away she refused to go into the bedroom and it has only been recently she has gone into the room. When I am home, she sleeps with me and normally she is a log and you can't move. However, she was so restless last night I nearly placed her off the couch but I didn't.

It has only been the last couple of nights where she has been really bad. She started sleeping with my mother in the same bed nearly two weeks ago. She would go in there and when I went to bed she would come to the cuoch.

As for the closing of Virgin...

Regardless of how much money the stores are or aren't making, it really is more a matter of real estate than anything else.  The L.A. and NYC locations are in prime spots.  Location. Location.  Location.  Yes, business may be down, but the rents and taxes have also gone up at a higher rate than the profits have fallen.

Personally, I've always found the business at the Times Square Virgin Megastore to be quite "up" - at least there's always a good crowd of people in there.  And there have been weeks when I've stopped in there every day, and I can tell that they most definitely moved some product off those shelves.

However, there is "talk" that Virgin may consolidate down to one store in New York City - they also have a location down at Union Square.  But, again, this is more a matter of cutting down on real estate expenditures rather than the stores not making money.  At least in my eyes.

*Then you have J&R Music World down in lower Manhattan.  If I'm remembering correctly, that company actually owns the buildings they occupy - they are not leasing - and I know that helps a lot when it comes down to the bottom line.  Additionally, they're still located in a "cheaper" area of Manhattan.  -And I have to say, they've always had quite the extensive selection of CDs and DVDs (plus computers, home appliances, electronics, etc.).  If they were more convenient for me to get to (it's at least a 30 minutes train ride with a transfer), I'd probably shop there more often - their regular prices are most stores sale prices, and they routinely offer new CDs at $9.99 during the first week of release.  However, Virgin is 10-15 minutes from me, and the sales aren't bad either.

**I should also point out that different markets call out for different types of stores.  The main place to buy CDs in Richmond is Plan 9 Music - a funky little mini-chain.  Great stores, great service.  Yes, their selection may veer more towards the pop and rock catalog, but they always handle special orders with a smile, and their selection of old LPs is always fun to browse.  They are also a great supporter and promoter of the local bands in Richmond and Charlottesville.  Dave Matthew Band and Carbon Leaf are two of their early discoveries.

Thank you, everyone! I'm sure DR Dakotacelt can use some as well: her father's death is more recent than mine and it's still torturing me. Some days are fine and some days I can hardly move from the pain of it.

((((Elmore))))

I truly understand how you feel. I know my sleeping regimen has been up and down since then and osme nights I dont get any. I miss my dad terribly.

My neice and nephiew had picked out a christmas present long beffore he died and we still opened it. It is now hanging in an honored spot in the house. My father l oved John Deere tractors and it is a print of classic tractors that they gave him. He would have wanted it that way.

There has been a few times I wantaed to post the obit but I did not want to ruiin anyones birthday...

As for the closing of Virgin...

The L.A. and NYC locations are in prime spots.

But the LA area has four Megastores serving a population less than NYC's 2! Also, the Times Square store is in one of the densest foot-trafficed areas in the country, where LA has everybody going to suburban malls by car.

Also note, the "brains" of the Virgin franchise sold out - the Megastores are now owned by a real estate company!

With a store like Amoeba in the area, there would be little or no need to go to a store like Virgin. Amoeba's prices are better and their selection is much, much better.

I shop at Amoeba each time I go to L.A. and always spend a fortune...they actually have stuff that I would buy!

I also just have to wonder how much the internet (Amazon.com basically) has influenced the mindset of the "average" CD buyer.  If Amazon has it in stock, why don't you?  I'm sure there has to be some element of that besides the whole downloading craze (a craze I'm most definitely not a part of).  There's just soooo much product out there right now.  The amount of physical space to carry everything - at least Amazon.com's version of everything - and enough copies of everything is basically impossible.  And more, importantly, unpredictable.  Just how many copies of THE newest release should a store order for the first day, the first week of sale.  -And does a store have to carry one copy of every "obscure" title just in case someone happens to come in a few days, months (even years) later looking for that CD?

I grew up knowing that there were times when I would have to get something "later".  Alas, everyone wants it "Now".  And they mean it.

MOUNT WASHINGTON, New Hampshire (AP)

-- Neither strong wind nor high flames bothered Nin the cat during a dozen years patrolling the Northeast's highest peak as mascot of the Mount Washington Observatory.

It's retirement that bums him out.

The regal ex-stray with a bright white coat and black splotches was carried off the mountain Wednesday for the last time and will live with some park rangers in the valley below due to old age and a recent infection claiming the last of his teeth.

"He's 17 or 18 years old, so he's getting up there. We wanted to do the most humane thing for him," said Scot Henley, executive director of the nonprofit weather observatory.

Nin is moving in with Diane Holmes and Mike Pelchat, rangers at Mount Washington State Park, after years of petting and pampering from visitors and researchers alike.

The Megastore's survival depends on folks like us who like to "browse" and discover new possibilities - and that means lots of traffic (read "pedestrians" and population density added to large tourist base).

SHOWS THAT OPENED ON THIS DATE:

1927 George S. Kaufman & Edna Ferber's comedy The Royal Family opens at the Selwyn Theatre and runs for 196 performances. It's a thinly-disguised portrait of the Barrymore acting dynasty. The play will also have a hit revival with George Grizzard 48 years later, and be adapted as a musical by William Finn.

1938 Thornton Wilder has a flop with his comedy The Merchant of Yonkers, which closes after just 39 performances. He'll have more success with the revised version, retitled The Matchmaker in 1955, and even more success when the latter becomes a musical, Hello, Dolly! in 1964.

1944 The musical, On the Town, opened in New York City for a run of 462 performances. It was Leonard Bernstein’s first big Broadway success. Stars Nancy Walker, Betty Comden, Adolph Green

1954 Clifford Odets paints a comic picture of the Biblical Noah (of Ark fame) and his wife and kids as a bickering middle-class Jewish family. Menasha Skulnik plays Noah. It will run 135 performances at the Belasco Theatre and be adapted as the musical Two by Two by Martin Charnin and Richard Rodgers. It's Odet's final Broadway play.

1961 The Night of the Iguana - Bette Davis

1969 James Coco is the Last of the Red Hot Lovers. Neil Simon's comedy exposes a married man worrying that the sexual revolution is happening without him. It will run for 706 performances.

1970 Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen but no audience. John Patrick's musical adaptation of his play based on the novel "Teahouse of the August Moon" by Vern Schneider will run two weeks.

1979 The life of Piaf takes the stage at London's Aldwych Theatre. Pam Gems scripted this Royal Shakespeare production about the French chanteuse Edith Piaf. Jane Lapotaire stars. Gems would have another critical hit in 1997 with Stanley, starring Antony Sher at Circle in the Square.

My rant of the day:
Who told film composers that the music for every exciting/dramatic scene needs to sound like "Oh Fortuna" from Carmina Burana? It's really annoying. Stop copying Carl Orff & write your own damn music!

They can't write their own damn music because the producers and directors keep using all those variations on Orff on their temp tracks, and the dictum is do it or be replaced.  Some, like Randy Newman, actively tell the producers and directors what they can do with their dictum - he turns in his score and will not rewrite - and he's had several scores either thrown out or added to by other composers.
