Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in gear, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in neutral right now and are going nowhere fast.
-
And the word of the day is: VELLEITY!
-
Welcome thirteen GUESTS. I wonder if one of them is... nah.
-
I must now try and get my beauty sleep.
-
BK, glad you liked (if not loved) "Sweeney Todd."
-
I was so pleased I didn't hate it. I'll definitely buy the DVD when it comes out, which will probably be sooner than later.
-
To recap: yesterday, I had brunch with my friend Margo and her friend Marsha, then we all went to see "P.S. I Love You," which was pretty good. ;)
So, after the movie, I was walking through the mall to which the movie theater is attached and I walked by this store that I had never noticed before, called Steve & Barry's (I think). Anyway, they had signs everywhere saying "EVERYTHING IS $8.99! NO EXCEPTIONS!" Everything? Yup, everything in the store (mainly t-shirts, really) was $8.99. I walked around and didn't see ANYTHING in my size, but they had a few shoe choices, and they were all $8.99 per pair. I actually bought two pairs of the exact same style white tennis shoes, figuring that for $8.99, how bad can they be. I put them on when I got home and wore them later in the evening and so far, so good. :)
-
After that, I changed clothes so that I could usher for Harlequin Productions' Operation Stardust. It was written by them, set in 1942 and using actual period songs as performances...meaning, no sung dialogue. It was quite good. My friends Russ and Nat were in it. They were also in Cannibal! The Musical! that I was in last year. In one scene, I even played Nat's father. Last night's show was a lot of fun. Their final show is New Year's Eve.

HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAY WISHES
TO OUR OWN DR DAKOTACELT!!!
-
After seeing Operation Stardust, Margo and I went to Red Robin...only the second time I ate today (bruch was VERY filling). I had the Burger Parmigiana...very good. :) After that, I came home and logged in to HHW. :)
-
...where I may now say:
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR DAKOTACELT!! ;D

Sunday morning greetings! It's the first of my 3-days-in-a-row off and I'm up early to accompany DH Richard to church in Cincinnati. Later this afternoon, I'm joining some of my book group girlfriends for a rousing game of Booklovers' Trivial Pursuit.
-
Birthday wishes to DR DakotaCelt!
-
Possibly too much Graeter's ice cream late at night
But it was worth it, wasn't it, DR FJL? Hope you feel better.
-
Happy Birthday to DR DakotaCelt.
Hope you have a great day!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND HUGS TO DR DAKOTACELT!

RE: BK's comments on SWEENEY TODD
SPOILERS I guess.
I actually totally agree a few of the things you wrote, especially re: Helena Bonham Carter's Mrs. Lovett.
My favorite parts of SWEENEY (the stage musical) are the humor and Mrs. Lovett. Although here is a question. Is it Ms Carter and Mr. Depp or did they just do what the director told him (i.e., maybe he wanted it to be compeletely humorless, which is what i think).
RE: Anthony.
I actually disagree about this one. I loved him. Although I will agree that at first i was also a bit startled by his look.
But his voice was just so perfect. And after i ignored the hairdo, i just really enjoyed him.
-
Good morning.
-
Is it morning already?
-
Everyone must be still asleep - I'm the only one in the room.
-
A very happy happy birthday to DR Dakota Celt!
-
Last night I went to see a small play called Pied a Terre that is playing Off Broadway at Theater Row, which I quite enjoyed. For much of the play, I thought it was quite predictable, but I was enjoying watching it unfold nonetheless, especially because I was enjoying the acting of the young actress, a woman named Jessica McKee, whom I had never seen before. But then, the play took a twist that I wasn't expecting and it made it quite interesting. The playwright is John Anastasi. The program lists several other plays he's written, but I was not familiar with any of them.
-
Good morning JRand.
-
I'm not alone anymore!
-
Will we never get to page 2?
-
Page 2!

Good mornings to DRs JULIE & FJL.
Congratulations to SKIP on the HERRINGBONE honors.

Birthday Happy to DR DAKOTACELT who provided both the teakettle whistle AND the soap opera excerpts in last summer's production of THE SUNSHINE BOYS, and made my life a whole lot easier!
-
Jrand - Glad to hear your package is safe and protected from wrongdoers who would have their way with it.
-
Skip is extraordinarily talented.
And Roger Rees and BD Wong gave Herringbone a terrific production this year.
-
Dorothy Provine always had plenty of clothing changes, even when she was traveling by dog sled in THE ALASKANS!
-
Jrand - Glad to hear your package is safe and protected from wrongdoers who would have their way with it.
:o
-
FJL - What is the graeter's flavor of the day?
-
Jrand - Glad to hear your package is safe and protected from wrongdoers who would have their way with it.
Thanks - it would seem one little slip of paper would have made all the difference. But after all, they handle thousands of packages and thousands of slips....so....I am glad that it was us and not some little kids that missed the packages on Christmas morning. ;D
-
Good morning Dear Reader Laura.
-
Off to install some software.
-
The Graeter's flavor of the day is: all of them
:)
-
Good morning, all.

Happy Happy Birthday to DR DakotaCelt! Cake! Cake! Cake!

There was an actor playing Anthony in SWEENEY TODD ??? ??? ???

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR DAKOTA CELT
-
Paraphrasing a quote from a report from CBS Sunday Morning: "My trainer got me doing exercises that will extend my life, or at least make it seem longer." :)
-
Good morning!
Very dark and gray and rainy here and the temperature is supposed to fall during the day. You could feel just a bit of chill in the air this morning. I'll be inside all day anyway watching stuff and doing laundry.
-
Happy Birthday to DR Dakota Celt.
-
Of course, I'll be finishing the four remaining GUNSMOKE episodes to begin my afterboon of viewing. I'll have to look at the stack of review copies to decide if one of them will come next, or if I can watch some things for fun today.
-
If I get to watch something without a pen and pad in my lap, it'll be CHILDREN OF MEN definitely. I've wanted to see this for a year and should finally get to it today.
-
I saw nothing of interest on TV for me tonight, so I'll be DVDing it all day today, too.
I also have to dub a VHS church program onto a DVD-R for a friend. That will take some time today as well.
-
Do we need to get to page three?
-
Page Three Ron, Hermione, and Crookshanks Dance!!!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I just finished watching John Edwards on "Face The Nation"... He looked good, although his eyes seemed to be showing signs of all the current craziness in Iowa. And I'm wondering if he's still getting those $400 hair cuts... and maybe even some "touch ups". ;)
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAKOTA CELT!!!!!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR DAKOTA CELT!!!!!

Congrats to DR FJL's ever-lovin' Skip on the Herringbone Best of 2007 Citation!

...It's sort of hard to believe that I'm flying back to NYC in two days. I mean, the past week and a half have really seemed to fly by faster than I thought they would. When I first booked this trip home, I was a little "afraid" to be away from The City for so long (almost two weeks). The longest I had been out of The Big Apple this past year was just about a week - compared to last year when I was basically "out of residence" for four and a half months. New York City has really become my home this past year.
In retrospect (sort of), I'm glad I was able to spend this much time down here with my family and friends. I've had some great "quality time" with many people, most of all with my parents.
-
Well, it's time to get the rest of my day in gear. I just ended up crashing here last night at Steve's, so he'll be driving me back to my parents house this afternoon. On the way, we both have a few shopping errands to take care of. So, until later...
Laters...
-
Time for me to head back to Dodge City for my last visit there for awhile.
WBBL.
-
Okay, DR Enabler, time for the Beatles birthday song -- hit it!
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy Birthday to you!
I would like you to dance -- Birthday
Take a cha-cha-cha chance -- Birthday....
Happy Birthday to you, DCelt!!
And Many Morrrre!
-
Now, DR Enabler it's time for He's The Jolly Good Fellow -- hit it!
For He's the Jolly Good Fellow
For He's the Jolly Good Fellow
For He's the Jolly Good Fellow
He's so talented -- THAT, nobody can deny!
Congrats to Skip!!
And many Morrre!
-
Speaking of what time it is -- it's time for me to scram -- DR Enabler, Happy Trails -- hit it:
Happy Trails to You
Until We Meet Again
Happy Trails to You

I was glad I was able to help by contributing to a successful production of Sunshine Boys.

Thank you bik for the lovely birthday greeting in the notes!

Have practicaly reacclimated myself to west coast time.
It was a struggle this year...for some reason. I blame the flight and, thus, of course, that means I blame Jose.
-
Have been all through my packages and mail and have been delighted and surprised and amazed.
There are some warm, generous folks out there.
-
DR Jane: Does the term "airberlin" mean anything to you? I ask becauce I have an e-mail I'm afraid to open because I do not recognize the e-mail address...but "Jane" is a name attached to it.
-
It's a gloriously glorious day outside. Blue skies and all.
But it's a mite CHILLY, too. I need to light a fire log.
-
Many, many thanks and hugs to all who sent me vibes and well wishes over the past couple of days.
MUCH appreciated.
-
Just a note of self-congratulations: My mom had a "gutter man" in on Friday and he told her that her gutters do not need replacing, but they DO need to be rebalanced (i.e. they're all lower on the ends furthest from the downspouts). I said as much the day I cleaned them, so it's good to get some validation for my first assessment of gutters of any kind.
-
Thank you for the birthday greetings MattH and Arnold!
-
Congrats to Skip!
-
I was most interested in BK's assessment of "Sweeney Todd". He seems to have hit on some of the same pros and cons that I've heard from other quarters, although there have been some outright raves by some people who probably don't know what potential might have been overlooked.
-
Thankyou Cillaliz and Jose for the lovely greetings...
Thank you Karen for the lovely song! You are too cool!
-
As I said, it's a mite CHILLY this morning and here I sit in my day-after-my-birthday-suit (i.e., I'm "dressed" but only "just"). Time for some "swaddling", I suspect.
-
[shadow=color,width,#characters wide] Page 4 [/shadow]
-
Thank you Donna for the lovely greeting and birthday Cake... I hope you don't mind but I would love to share it with everyone here at HHW....
Thank you also for the birthday greeting!
-
I want to watch some DVDs today. There are several (!!!!) from which I have not yet removed the shrink wrap!
-
And then some.
-
Cold here today...
-
Oooh! Ooh!
I just realized why it's so cold in here.
I opened the window last night when things were a tad warmer and still. And I forgot about it.
Until just a moment again when a huge rush of air rattled the blinds.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r!
-
Congratulations to any and all fans of the New England Patriots who set several records last night in the National Football League.
-
Now, DR JRand....let's see whether Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts can set things aright in the playoffs!!!
-
Why am I feeling ignored?
Will it pass?
-
That was a good game last night.... I was nervous for a bit and thought the PATS were going to lose.
-
It will pass (a Follies reference)
-
Perhaps...perhaps...perhaps.
I shall simply overlook it...and be done.
-
The Vikings are a shell of their former glory
-
Actually, the Follies reference is "It would pass," but that didn't seem like an appropriate answer.
-
It will pass (a Follies reference)
Thank you, Fred, for the reassurances (and reaffirmation, as it were).
-
I wonder if there is anyone else we can blame stuff on other than Jose!
Hmmmmmm.....so few are qualified, I suspect.
-
:D
Didja miss me, Jose?
-
Ahoy! ELMO! Avast ye swabby!
-
I think it is time for some coffee.
Oh, yeah! Some coffee...and maybe a chocolatine or morning bun...or two.
Yes...that's the ticket.
Ummmmmm.
-
Will be back laters....
Ciao-ders....
-
I am off to do somethings.... will be back later..
-
Now, DR JRand....let's see whether Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts can set things aright in the playoffs!!!
I'm not much interested in basketball. 8)

Good morning, all! I slept really well for the first time in days and I also slept really late. I have few plans today: a bit of Toyland work here, some estate work, perhaps laundry and some tidying up.
DR Ron Pulliam, I don't believe that's from Nurse Jane, so be careful. If nothing looks familiar in the email heading I just delete it and face the consequences later.
DR FJL, kudos to Skip! That was 3 pm on Jan 1?

2008
-
Hello, everyone.
It feels like rain here and I once again feel lazy. There's been a lot of that lately.
-
Watching MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID.....I know that a lot of Esther's emerging from the water effect was done by reversing the film, sometimes a couple of times.....and I know that she was known as a swimmer, but it seems to me watching these movies that her high diving was done by a double....and a couple of her sliding stunts were as well....not to take anything away from her.
Still I am at a loss to explain her popularity.
-
DAKOTA CELT also helped with BK's birthday DVD, even though her life was in turmoil at the time. She immediately offered to do some artwork, which was quite lovely, and without her, I'm afraid we would have forgotten the fershluganah COWS! And what's HHW without cows, I ask you?
-
Good afternoon to everyone. We are back from the Isle of Long in the City of Manhattan.
-
I have catching up to do but first
Happy Birthday to Dakota Celt!
-
And belated vibes and birthday wishes to those who were missed in my absence.
-
We will be heading out to Brooklyn soon for more Holiday visiting. We will be visiting Anthony's Aunt and cousins.
-
I have to go back to work on Wednesday. Too soon, even though I've been away from the office since November 28th.
-
I think I'll curl up with a book.
A lovely Sunday to everyone.
-
Hard Candy Christmas is playing in the background and Anthony is in the shower getting ready for our trip to Brooklyn. I need to get the passports out of the filing cabinet ;)
-
We received a most wonderful and grand Christmas present from Ant's parents. We got an ION TTB USB Turntable! We will now be able to transfer records ourselves instead of depending on the kidness of friends. We set it up last night and recorded a couple of tracks from some albums we are familiar with and the results are great. We got the model without the dust cover but we have space issues anyway so it's easier to store without the dust cover. The turntable will fit on the desk next to the computer when we want to use it. We already use the software it comes with so there was no pesky installation to be done, just making sure the weight on the tone arm was correctly calibrated. Hoo and Ray. We will be recording and burning late into the night I'm sure.
-
It's not over yet, but all in all, it's been a lovely holiday season. I'm relaxed and not dreading going back to the office (it would be great if I didn't have to go but I don't hate my job so it's not a real issue for me) and we will continue the holiday celebrations well into January (as a precursor to my Ground Hog Day birthday).
-
On return from Long Island there was a packet of tax forms from the State of New York in my mail box. I will get my W-2 forms on January 28th and will do my taxes as soon as possible after that. I've already made my IRA deposit so whatever tax refund I'm getting will go to a new computer. We don't NEED one but the 'puter on Long Island is on it's last legs so I'll buy a new one for the city and take the old one out to Anthony's parents. His mother will be very happy to receive this one.
-
I've had my own mini-frenzy so I'll check out now.
Later, gaters.
-
Welcome back the DR BEN....what a GREAT gift!!!
I wonder if DR SINGDAW ever took his system out of the box?
-
A hearty happy birthday to DR DakotaCelt!

I plan to have a relaxing day of watching movies...and not leaving the house! Must finish my Edna Mae Oliver movie, which co-stars Mr. Buster Crabbe who wears nothing but a skimpy pair of bathing trunks during the entire film!
THAT is worth the price of admission!!
-
Like elmore, I finally got the night of sleep I really needed, slept late, and feel groggy but good. Groggy But Good - that's the title of my next novel.
-
Congrats to Skip on Herringbone. In honor of the award, I shall look lovingly at a jar of herring.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone? You'd think it was the final Sunday of 2007 or something.
-
Will we never get to page six?
-
I wonder if DR SINGDAW ever took his system out of the box?
Not yet! :( I never can seem to find enough consecutive uninterrupted hours to do so.
-
CONGRATULATIONS to Skip on your Herringbone honor! :)
-
it's good to get some validation
Yes, indeed. Especially since you're still in the doghouse about the freezer door.
;)
-
I'm not alone anymore!
No one is alone.
-
HAPPY BD, DAKOTACELT. If you don't have them already, I highly recommend both Moya Brennan's and Natalie MacMaster's new CDs.
-
Congrats, Skip!
-
Okay, this year-end errant and truant behavior will be met with a lashing by penne pasta.
-
I've made a New Year's resolution to avoid bad puns. This cuts down on my posting quite a bit.
-
Maybe I meant I'll avoid reading bad puns, not avoid saying them.
-
My, what a quiet day on HHW.
I got bored with reading.
-
I log on and BK leaves. Oh, well.
-
I may make a new year's resolution to encourage bad puns.
-
I log on and BK leaves. Oh, well.
That's my job.
-
That's my job.
Oh, sorry, Jeffrey.
-
Oh, sorry, Jeffrey.
That's OK--I left when I saw Elmore had signed on. ;D
-
And FJL left after I PM'd him. ;)
-
Well it's time for my last visit with Cinderella and her lovely family. I must say that this is one of the nicest companies I've ever had the pleasure of working with--especially encouraging, since so many of them are kids.
-
Watching MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID.....I know that a lot of Esther's emerging from the water effect was done by reversing the film, sometimes a couple of times.....and I know that she was known as a swimmer, but it seems to me watching these movies that her high diving was done by a double....and a couple of her sliding stunts were as well....not to take anything away from her.
Still I am at a loss to explain her popularity.
She's never admitted it, but I think there is NO question that she had a stunt double doing all of her high diving and other stunts. On a large screen TV, it doesn't look much like her at all.
-
And I, too, find a little of Esther goes a long way.
-
I enjoyed the final episodes of GUNSMOKE on the DVD set. In the last episode, Carl Betz was the guest star, a year before becoming Mr. Donna Reed on TV. He's gorgeous.
-
Looking over the stack of review discs here, I saw that another TV set comes oput on January 8th, so I put it in to see what it was all about. It's ROB & BIG, an MYV series about the advantures of the champion professional skateborder and his 416 pound bodyguard. It's foolishness pure and simple. Amazing that it's beginning its third season on the air in a week or so.
Same premise as MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST (star with entourage going about their daily business) , but that's funny, and this is just inane.
-
JMK - I left to answer your PM :) . Hope it helps.
-
I watched about 6 episodes and some special features (deleted scenes and a "making of" documentary), plenty to let me know what this show is all about. I'll sample an episode or two from the remaining three discs.
-
Another from the stack of backlogged review copies is THE TWO JAKES, and I'm going to watch that tonight. Doesn't look like there's much in the way of bonus features on this so I should be able to finish up with this disc this evening.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR DAKOTACELT
-
As mentioned yesterday or the day before
DP Colin and I have been watching Simon Pegg's wonderful tV show "Spaced'. If you loved Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, you will love the very clever earlier work.
-
Books for the year:
"Son of a Witch" was the top of my list.
-
Hello DR TOMovOZ!
-
And I, too, find a little of Esther goes a long way.
Ain't it the truth. And yes since it's obvious on big screen TV - I would guess the doubling would be VERY obvious on THE big screen.
Didn't even seem to be her sliding on her feet down that long water slide in MDM....but then again, if she gets hurt, the movie stops. :P
-
Sunday night is TAR night!
-
Good Afternoon!
It's raining in Richmond.
-
DR Ron Pulliam - I believe the real question is: Did you miss me?
;)
-
Just being lazy. Had a Subway Club for lunch, which, I'm afraid, was not so good.
-
I may eat some peanuts, just for the HELL of it.
-
Are we STILL on page six?
-
I will single-handedly take us to page seven.
-
I believe that there IS a topic of the day despite its being free-for-all day.
-
And I don't recall reading anyone's ten best list for books, unless I missed it in my groggy stupor. My Groggy Stupor - that's the title of my next novel, a story of wanton lust on the high seas.
-
Well... We shopped here. We shopped there. Steve bought some stuff, I didn't buy anything.
We did come across a "new" store while we were driving around called Federated Warehouse (http://www.federatedwarehouse.com/). I put "new" in quotes since FW used to be in another location under a different name. It's basically a home decor store that features old and new store fixtures, theatrical set pieces, and other large items.
Their old space was a smallish storefront, and this new space was their warehouse. Well, now the warehouse is the showroom, and they really have done a wonderful job of putting everything on display, and since the space is HUGE, there's plenty of room for strolling and browsing.
They had a couple of these "figurines" on display:
They were part of a Show Me America display/diorama that toured the country. In person and up close, they are truly detailed and luxuriously made.
-
There was an actor playing Anthony in SWEENEY TODD ??? ??? ???
I thought it was a guest appearance by Hillary Swank. . . . :-[
ROTFLMAO!! ;D
-
I want that outfit.
-
PAGE 7 DANCE!!
-
Books.....
-
And Congrats to Fred and Skip for the "Herringbone" accolades!!
-
And of interest to some DRs, Federated Warehouse also had a nice collection of movie posters. Well, more like "ads" - they were about 18 inches tall and 6 feet wide/long. There was also a great oversized poster for the French release of "The Glass Key" ("Un Clé de Verre").
-
Thank you George, Ginny, td, FJL, Julie, and Jennifer
The balloons are adoreable George!
I'm glad you liked them!
-
I did read some books this year, but fewer than usual since I was preoccupied with DVDs from February on.
I'm not sure I call them best books, but I certainly enjoyed the Eileen Heckart biography and the autobiography by Tab Hunter. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE were both read by me this year, and I actually preferred HALF-BLOOD PRINCE though it was bittersweet having the saga come to an end. I'm sure there were others, but the titles aren't coming to my mind at the moment.
-
Heading down to start on Mr. Nicholson's movie after I clean the guest bath.
WBBL.
-
I'm at home doing nothing...other than catching up with all the posts. Now that I have, I'm going to watch some TV: the last episode of "Private Practice" and the last two episodes of "Grey's Anatomy." After that, who knows?
Until later!
-
I'm just sitting here like so much fish. I haven't even eaten peanuts.
-
George - I have nothing to do with Herringbone, but I'll pass your congrats for that along to Skip!!!
-
Believe it or don't, I actually read some books this year (don't faint DR Elmore).
So the best books I read this year are:
EIJI TSUBURAYA: MASTER OF MONSTERS by August Ragone
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ht66PDACL._AA240_.jpg)
KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE: THE BARBARA PAYTON STORY by John O'Dowd ( as super nice guy, by the way)
MURDER AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH by someone named BK
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51z3Qz8gKZL._AA240_.jpg)
THE FIRST FAMILY OF INDIAN CINEMA: THE KAPOORS: by Madhu Jain
(http://www.filmiholic.com/images/the%20kapoors.jpg)
And my most favorite book that I read this year....
FANTASIES OF A BOLLYWOOD LOVE THIEF: by Stephen Alter
(http://indiablogs.searchindia.com/images/bollywood-love-thief.jpg)
-
Now to watch some more movies...just finished GUYS AND DOLLS...somehow in my 40 something years of watching movie musicals this movie has escaped my notice. Correcting this injustice, Don, our mailroom guy at work, loaned me his DVD of what is his all time favorite film.
Very fun movie and it was most enjoyable to spot my interviewee Lynnette Bernay as one of "The Goldwyn Girls" in several of the musical numbers.
-
Now what to watch...I have the entire fun of THRILLER on DVDr to watch as well as many episodes of Warner Bros TV series THE ROARING 20S (including one guest starring everyones favorite Daisy Mae, Miss Leslie Parrish).

I actually bought two pairs of the exact same style white tennis shoes, figuring that for $8.99, how bad can they be. I put them on when I got home and wore them later in the evening and so far, so good. :)

HERRINGBONE also made DR Julie's Top ten list, IIRC.
Didn't it narrowly loose out to Sweeney Todd for most bloodshed on stage?

Der B - Only on opening night. Other nights, the blood was implied.

Congratulations to Skip on HERRINGBONE making the Top Ten.

Why am I feeling ignored?
Will it pass?

I think I would have been more interested in the seven foot tall Woody Woodpecker.
-
Watching MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID.....Still I am at a loss to explain her popularity.
Like Elvis to come, her films provided glorious family-friendly escape fare for the masses. You always left an Esther Williams' film with a smile on your face.

I've read many books this year; I usually can whip through two or three books per week.
TOD:
LES MISERABLES - Victor Hugo (not the first time)
ANNA KARENINA - Leo Tolstoy (the first time)
A TALE OF TWO CITIES - Charles Dickens (not the first time)
JANE EYRE - one of those Bronte Girls (the first time)
UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN - Jan Krakour - great non-fiction novel about a murder in Mormon territory; includes a great historical background.
BABYLON'S ARK - Lawrence Anthony - the rescue of the zoo animals during the initial volleys of the war in Iraq.
THE YEAR OF LIVING BIBLICALLY - A. J. Jacobs -funny and honest nonfiction about the atheistic author attempting to live by a specific set of rules set down by the writers of The Bible.
THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY - Erik Larson - a mass murder does his dirty work in Chicago as the 1890 Exhibition is built.
THE TOMB - F. Paul Wilson - Mbarnum would like this novel about a group of Indian demons on the loose in Manhattan.
THE STORE and THE RESORT - Bentley Little - two scarefests, the first a scathing indictment of Wal*Wart that is thinly disguised; the latter, a haunted spa in the middle of the Arizona desert.
THE QUEEN IS DEAD
DEAD PAN - two theatrical murder mysteries by Jane Dentinger; highly recommended.
THE SIX MESSIAHS
THE LIST OF SEVEN - two Mark Frost novels which I have recommended here before; the early years of Sherlock Holmes in London and the American West.
GOOD OMENS - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett - The Apocalypse arrives, hysterically.

You read a lot, too, DR TCB! Another reason why I'm enamored of you.
Actually I read a great many books this year, but I thought the TOD was referring to books published this year. I did love the final HARRY POTTER (which I forgot about, thank you, Matt), but all of the other books I read were published prior to this year. Of course, if td had let me know that Charles Dickens had a new book out this year, I would have certainly read it.
-
Thank you Elmore and Jeanne for the birthday wishes!

I didn't buy anything.

Of course, if td had let me know that Charles Dickens had a new book out this year, I would have certainly read it.
My dear chum Chuckie Dickens puts out at least a book a year, he's quite prolific. . .I think he's working on a mystery novel now which he hopes to musicalize. . . ;)
I, too, neglected to mention HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS. . . :-[
-
DBF and I had a lovely afternoon. WE left to go have coffee before the movie at Barnes and Noble. I did a bit of browsing and saw a couple of books I am interested in.
We went to the matinee showing of ENCHANTED. Wonderful and simply delightful. The only drawback was this bratty little 7 year old behind me kicking my chair.
Amy Adams was wonderful and a simple delight. I really enjoyed her on screen. What a treat! The little girl who played Morgan was adorable and Susan Sarandon was excellent as Nerissa. DBF also greatly enjoyed the film.
-
After the movie, we went out for dinner at Granite City. Excellent food. I had a three cheese baked Ravioli with mixed vegetables. DBF had had Parmesan fettucinni.
-
DAKOTA CELT also helped with BK's birthday DVD, even though her life was in turmoil at the time. She immediately offered to do some artwork, which was quite lovely, and without her, I'm afraid we would have forgotten the fershluganah COWS! And what's HHW without cows, I ask you?
An unMOOving place!
LOVE HHW... Gotta love the cows! ;)

Thank you for the Birthday wishes Ben!

I just watched 2, count 'em 2 episodes of the 1950s series BRAVE EAGLE. If Keith Larsen did not make THE most hunky native American in TV history, I will eat my hat!

HAPPY BD, DAKOTACELT. If you don't have them already, I highly recommend both Moya Brennan's and Natalie MacMaster's new CDs.
Thank you for the birthday wishes JMK. I am a big fan of Natalie and I hope to get her cd soon.
Moya Brennan I will have to check out also.

Thank you Tomovoz for the birthday greeting!

And of interest to some DRs, Federated Warehouse also had a nice collection of movie posters. Well, more like "ads" - they were about 18 inches tall and 6 feet wide/long. There was also a great oversized poster for the French release of "The Glass Key" ("Un Clé de Verre").
Speaking of movie posters, I got two this year at the Fargo Theatre:
The Namesake
Wind that Shakes the Barley
Interestingly, the last one will fit in with the other two Irish themed movie posters i have: Michael Collins and The Devil's Own

OH!
DR DakotaCelt - I meant to mention that part of the soundtrack for "Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" is provided by the Chieftains.

I wondered that when I saw the trailers on the telly here. It truly sounded like them. I will have to get it. THe chieftains also did some of the music for Circle of Friends but I have never been able to find that one.
BTW, only two theatres in ND are showing Sweeney Todd. Grand Forks will get it this weekend.

-
I found a copy one time but it was so badly scratched from looking at the picture I did not buy it.
-
I was not home for TAR. I sure hope it recorded!
-
The Pgenre that FJL is referring to is a long-time poster on All That Chat. He's living proof of why those boards cannot be taken seriously. He's been a know-it-all poster almost since the beginning of the board, which was back in 1998 when it sort of got popular. He's just admitted he's a new college student, which means when people would get into heated discourse on a subject he was being a know-it-all about they were conversing with a ten-year-old child. I rest my case.
-
Did he say something about not being old enough to rent a car? Would that mean he's not even 21 yet?
I say this knowing he must be lurking here.
-
Nope, it wasn't me.
Great! I'll delete it then....it claims to be a happy new year e-card. You're the only Jane I know of...so it's obviously a spam thingie.
-
There are many Janes in the naked city.
-
The day has whizzed by.
I was going to go for coffee and buns this a.m. when my phone rang. My mom was calling and we chatted a while.
Then I went out and shopped for New Year's....got some fresh collards and fresh cabbage and fresh brussels sprouts...and some pork. Then I got my morning buns, chocolatines and coffee.
I've viewed some TV during the day, clearning things off my DVR cache (except the "Bones" Christmas show from last year or the year before...a REALLY good show that I cannot watch too many times).
I've napped, too, for about 90 minutes.
I've recently cleaned the collards and cooked them. I've a potato baking in my toaster oven and a rib eye steak sitting on the counter ready to be grilled in half an hour.
Life is good.
-
There are many Janes in the naked city.
This is good to know. I've heard of women "Janing" but I wasn't sure any were named "Jane."

Lookin' forward to a little afternoon delete

Watching MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID.....I know that a lot of Esther's emerging from the water effect was done by reversing the film, sometimes a couple of times.....and I know that she was known as a swimmer, but it seems to me watching these movies that her high diving was done by a double....and a couple of her sliding stunts were as well....not to take anything away from her.
Still I am at a loss to explain her popularity.
It's one of those conundrums that seem to fill your life...like your abhorrence of the wonderful Bernadette Peters and the brilliant Gene Kelly.
Most of us are at a loss to explain THAT!
:D

The opportunity to say "And one for collards!" and so far from a page-turn!

I think one of my New Year's resolutions is going to be avoiding the "by name" thank yous to everyone who wishes me a happy birthday.
One general "thank you" to all and sundry should do the trick. Otherwise there is ALWAYS the possibility that someone will wish me a HAPPY BIRTHDAY who will go unacknowledged, leaving that person to think his greeting was overlooked or unwelcome!

So... My parents just got back from a New Year's Eve Eve party that some of their new neighbors held tonight. At the party, they heard about all these cool places to go to in Richmond. Of course, I've been telling them about all those same cool places for while - and even during the past week and a half. ;)
Well, it looks I'll be taking them around Richmond tomorrow to check out some of these "cool places". I guess I should check to make sure everything is open tomorrow before we head out.

Oh, DR MBarnum!
Now that you've seen GUYS AND DOLLS, you need to see BLOODHOUNDS OF BROADWAY with Scott Brady, Scott Brady's pecs, Scott Brady's forearms and a little, lithe dancer/singer named Mitzi Gaynor.

I watched two more episodes of ROB & BIG and will be done with it for a few days. No hurry about finishing the episodes. I know for certain I'll have THE NAKED PREY to watch tomorrow and who knows what else might come in?
-
PLAY MITZI FOR ME - the new fantasy film about....oh, we've done this one alreday

Next, I watched THE TWO JAKES. Yep, just as plodding as I remembered it to be, and I think it could have been a lot more exciting with a better director and a faster pace. Yes, I know it was happening in 1948, but that wasn't the ICE AGE. You know, everything moving at a glacial pace!
And a great cast, too. Loved seeing the familiar faces from CHINATOWN all those years later.

I also watched the featurette on the disc, the interview with Jack Nicholson about making the movie. I really did not remember that there was originally a trilogy planned and the third one was to be GITTES VS. GITTES.

I had 80 minutes left in the evening. None of the Christmas movies I got for gifts were less than that, so I pulled SHERLOCK HOMES AND THE VOICE OF TERROR off the shelf. Haven't watched this first Universal Holmes movie in quite some time, and it's SO much fun. Evelyn Ankers was quite lovely in the movie, and I always like Reginald Denny and Henry Daniell in films.
-
Now I really must go.
Good night again.
-
PLAY MITZI FOR ME - the new fantasy film about....oh, we've done this one alreday
To quote Muzzy van Hossmere, " Oh, do it again. . ." ;)
-
Sorry I've been E and T. I spent the morning with this guy
-
And the evening with this one
-
Oh, and Elizabeth was there, looking as lovely as ever
-
Is it my imagination, or is Edwards looking like a thinner Michael McKean?
(Or have I just got Laverne and Shirley on the brain since seeing Cindy Williams live onstage yesterday?)
-
I'm going to do a little writing and then head downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-

He's certainly a lot thinner now than he was when he was our senator. I wouldn't mind seeing him gain a few pounds.
I don't see the Michael McKean resemblance at all.
-
And now, good night for real! ;D
-

He's looking a lot thinner than he did back in 2004. But a healthy thinner, not an unhealthy thin
-
Here's another view of Edwards
-
I will say that his events are so alive and charged with energy so much more so than anyone elses. I may go see Hillary on New Years Day but other than that, I'm done and have made up my mind
-
Speaking of Laverne and Shirley (and I guess only I was :) ), I was surprised to see that David L. Landers real name is David Landau, which just happens to be my nephew's name.
-
And back to "Sweeney Todd" for a moment...
The Richmond ABC affiliate's "Entertainment Reporter" didn't like the movie at all. However, I suspect that he just doesn't like musicals to begin with. His main gripes were that the Sondheim's music was "grating" and began to "sound the same" after a while. I was trying to find a transcript of the review online, but can't seem to track one down.
-
Just to give you an idea of what I've done to make up my mind, and I'm not unusual, this time around I have seen Biden twice, Dodd once, Richardson three times and his wife once, Obama twce, Clinton once, Edwards three times-twice he was with Elizabeth. Kuchinich and Gravel haven't been here. I have watched all but one debate, have read policy papers, visited websites and have discussed politics ad nauseum. We spend a lot of time preparing for the caucuses. It's a lot of work, but I'm so glad we get to do it.
-
And after Thursday night....I can forget about it until November!
-
DR Cillaliz - Do the candidates do any sort of follow-up in Iowa after the caucus? -Besides the usual campaign stops.

Not until the Nominee is running for office in the fall. I supposed they may come back to endorse a congressional or senatorial candidate, but usually once the caucuses are over they are gone.
-
Actually they are gone very quickly. It usually only takes a day or two at the most to pack up their offices and move on to the next state. The staffers here won't go to New Hampshire, they go to another state farther down the road and start all over there.
-
Of course, the winners all play dates in the major money cities between now and the elections....
-
What a wasteland TV is tonight. Everything is repetitious.
I suppose we're all supposed to just play dumb and mindless...or not watch at all.
-
Tomovoz! :-*

Yes, I suppose he was waiting for a Britney or Christina song...or something from Justin!
What a maroon!
Is THIS GUY (http://www.wric.com/Global/story.asp?S=24016&nav=menu28_2_5_4) the one????
-
Wel, I'm going to get some sleep. I have a lot of work to get done tomorrow.

Yep. But I'd say he's more "beige" than "maroon".

A quite New Year's Eve will be spent here - possibly watching the Russian (?) movie "The Suit".
We may even stay up until 10/00pm.
It approximately 40 degrees C here today.
-
We will be recording "Help" tonight. My memory of it is that it is even less enjoyable than "A Hard Day's Night".
Thank goodness for the music from the films.

And, now for something completely different... Just because (http://youtube.com/watch?v=08QkIZlQ8w4).

Did Goldie Hawn ever sing again after that TV special?
-
I probably didn't say enough about the score in my notes, but Sondheim's score, the actual music and lyrics are as good as he ever wrote and they mostly shine through the film gloriously. And that kid is so good that I liked Pirelli's Miracle Elixir for the first time ever.
-
Will we never get to page fourteen?
-
I watched two motion pictures on DVD - about which more later.
-
Let's see if we have any GUESTS.
-
Yep, we've got us five GUESTS.
-
Oh, DR MBarnum!
Now that you've seen GUYS AND DOLLS, you need to see BLOODHOUNDS OF BROADWAY with Scott Brady, Scott Brady's pecs, Scott Brady's forearms and a little, lithe dancer/singer named Mitzi Gaynor.
'
Oh, I do love me some Scott Brady, DR TD! I just added this movie to my Netflix queue thanks to your recommendation!
-
Just catching up.
Good night, all.
-
Cillaliz, I think that is so cool that your are getting to meet and great and see the candidates. If you think about it that is a rather historic thing to see all of these people...I am always in awe that JFK's car almost hit my mom's station wagon back in the the day when he was visiting Medford.
Despite almost being plowed into, my mom still voted for him.
I myself have never seen a president or a candidate in the flesh.
-
Spent the evening weeding out VHS tapes...most everything I had on tape has now either been released on DVD or is now in a pile to be transferred to DVDr.
Now I am off to bed.

Just like DR elmore's collection of VHS tapes. ;)

OK... Time for me to get some sleep now too.
Goodnight.

"the rig-ma

Nice. :)

Did Goldie Hawn ever sing again after that TV special?
She was in the Woody Allen movie musical, "Everyone Says I Love You (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116242/)," where (like "Sweeney Todd") everyone did their own singing...for better or worse.
It's not available on DVD. ::)
-
Has anyone seen this movie? I haven't. Is it any good?
