In light of the Spitzer scandal, an old pun:
There were these islanders who worshiped ever-living dolphins and
hoped they would be conferred immortality by sacrificing seagulls to
them. They ran out of birds on that side of the island, though, so
they went to the other side of the island to get some more.
Coming back, they found the way blocked by two regal lions who were
sound asleep. Knowing the dolphins were waiting for the sacrifice,
they tiptoed up and stepped over the lions, whereupon they were
immediately arrested and charged with transporting gulls over
stately lions for immortal porpoises.

Good morning, all! I had a weird dream last night about the Toyland project which included a pleasant visit in a library with the man supporting it, followed by a lot of us on the project and the gentleman's family splashing and boating about in an enormous pool of water.
This morning, more work on Toyland and Cinderella, this afternoon, a bit of bug control.
My biggest faux pas concerns Ethan Mordden, Rebecca Luker, Harold Rome, Dorothy Rodgers and me at a performance of the Equity Library Theatre production of WISH YOU WERE HERE, and I'm saving it for the memoirs.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Hmm... I know I've embarrassed myself every now and then, but, truly, no particular incident comes to mind right now. However, I do know that I have a habit of over-thinking and over-emphasizing some of the small professional faux pas(s) that I've made in my career - which usually involves not remembering what a staff member's name was, or making a comment in the room when I should have made it out of the room. No harm, no foul in the long run - or short run - but, boy, does my mind have a tendency to race!

It's actually pretty funny. Ryan won HOH last Wednesday. And went from leaving to running the show. Somehow Sharon/josh/james/chelsia convinced ryan to nominate matt. They told ryan he would be safe for 2 weeks if he did that.
So it seemed like ryan was turning on his friend.
But then somehow sheila decided to turn things around. ANd she convinced ryan to double cross the others and they went to matt and he knew the plan. I think natalie was involved too.
Anyhow it was sort of exciting for a while to think that they would blindside matt. But it was equally funny to think of the alternative.
Oh i forgot on sunday ryan nominated chelsia and sharon. And so i think they were going to put up matt after the pov. But then as i said everything shifted. And they decided to screw over james instead (who i don't like).
So at the pov chelsia won took herself off. And then ryan shocked sharon/chel/josh/james by putting james up. It should make for very interesting tv tonight.
It would have been funnier actually if chelsia and james were both up! I still don't really get why james offered up his "love" (who he genuinely seemed attached too). He told ryan to nominate her!

I forgot to mention that when I set out for Brooklyn the other day to attend an opera performance, I had no idea where I was going - I just knew that it was across the street from the Brooklyn Academy of Music. [I think I've been in Brooklyn just a few times in the past few years].
In any case, the Navigation/GPS function in my cell phone guided me perfectly, giving me turns and street names, and dumped me out an hour later right in front of the BAM building! Ah, modern technology. :)

Because I had so much to deal with at the end of the year, and also the beginning of this year, I haven’t had time to figure out how to deal with this, but please rest assured you will all get your monies back, and hopefully very soon.

IDOL finals begin tonight. I am more unenthusiastic about this group of 12 than I have ever been about the final 12 singers on the show. Once again, I'll be recording the two hour show and will start watching around 9 so I can cram two hours of show into about 45 minutes of viewing.

TOD: I still remember a stupid mistake I made when I was probably 5 or 6. A neighbor friend of ours had a husband named Bob and a son named Joe. Joe was actually the progeny of her first marriage--that husband had been an Air Force pilot who had been killed when his jet crash landed in the Great Salt Lake in the mid-50s--it made headlines all over the nation. Marge had had great emotional problems after his death and my mom (a nurse) had acted as her chauffeur when her doctor recommended electroshock treatments, which actually seemed to help. Well, anyway, Marge ultimately remarried to a nice man named Bob, who, tragically, died mysteriously on a business trip to North Africa, IIRC. Shortly after he had died, Marge was at our house and I meant to ask how Joe (her son) was, and I kept saying, "How is Bob?" My Mom finally interrupted, disgustedly, and informed me of my error. Even at my young age, I was completely mortified. I don't think Marge needed any more ECT, thankfully.

The only faux I can remember was coming out on stage during HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS in 1981 with my fly unzipped. I realized the problem midway through the scene and as I didn't have to do much in the scene (no dancing), I left it alone until I got offstage.
No one (either castmates or audience members that I knew) mentioned they had noticed anything, but ever since then I check my fly before I ever walk out on a stage.

Last night, commenting on the NY Gov escapade, Cillaliz observed: "At least he didn't pull a Jerry Springer and write a check for it."
Well, maybe he would have been better off if he had:
ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,336688,00.html)
NEW YORK — As Gov. Eliot Spitzer faced mounting calls to resign amid a prostitution scandal, a law enforcement official said Tuesday that the governor first came under suspicion because of cash payments from several bank accounts to an account operated by a call-girl ring.
Spitzer was the initial target of the investigation and was tracked using court-ordered wiretaps that appear to have recorded him arranging for a prostitute to meet him at a Washington hotel in mid-February, the official said.
…
Spitzer allegedly paid for the call girl to take a train from New York to Washington -- a move that opened the transaction up to federal prosecution because she crossed state lines. The governor has not been charged, and prosecutors would not comment on the case. A Spitzer spokesman said the governor has retained a large Manhattan law firm.
The case started when banks noticed the frequent transfers from several accounts and filed suspicious activity reports with the Internal Revenue Service, the law enforcement official told the AP. The accounts were traced back to Spitzer, prompting public corruption investigators to open an inquiry.

I would not have minded seeing Alex return, but we don't really need two mooks in the house. Jen would be a pleasant surprise and it would give her an opportunity to mend things with Ryan (if he's still interested in her).

DR JoseSPiano:
My mom's recipe for fried okra includes chilling the fresh okra in the refrigerator. Wash it and then slice it. There's less "goo" when it's chilled.
Mix equal amounts of flour and corn meal and place in a bag (paper or plastic). Season, if you desire. Add the chilled, sliced okra. Shake vigorously.
Return it to the refrigerator until you're ready to fry it. You can, of course, continue by frying the okra (until golden brown) in a pan of oil (we use Canola), but I like giving the okra a bit more time in the refrigerator while coated. I believe it allows the flour coating to adhere to the okra (helped by the okra's own "juicygummy goos"). I usually heat the oil over "medium" heat and cook the okra without reducing heat.
Drain on a paper bag. Serve/consume immediately thereafter.

You know, I'm going to say that this is an unnecessary and obnoxious post. I'm just going to say it. What people do or don't do is really not your business and I don't think we need your comments on it, frankly. A couple of people had written me, and they got an answer. But really, it's nice of you to stop by and make a post. Others have commented to me on the snarkiness of some previous posts and really, that's not what this board is about here and I'm going to make that clear to you this one last time.

I've dealt with one annoyance from the other day, and that is now fine. But there are a couple more to deal with today prior to the reading, and that's annoying in and of itself.

-
Can't you devise a prosthetic to cover said facial hair?
It's not my facial hair that's a problem. I can shave that easily...and do. :) The problem is my body hair...my chest and back hair! On Friday, I used Veet (a Nair-like product) to remove the hair from my chest and then again Sunday night. BUT I didn't wait the recommended 72 hours, only 48 hours after the first application. Let's just say that there is a reason for that 72 hour wait time for the second application. :-\ I'll shave it from now on.
I used clippers for my arms and shoulders. It's all I could reach, but it worked just fine. A hair stylist friend of mine will clip my back hair this afternoon and hopefully I won't have to go through any more of this. Last night, I got a new red lace penoir (sp?) for my Dolly Dimples drag, so that should cover my back enough that I'll only have to get it clipped this one time. ;)
TMI??

These gas prices are absolutely ridiculous and it is going to take yet another game-playing threat by the government to get them down again - it's happened every year for the last three years and I really wish that they DO something to these oil companies that would finally send them a clear message that this is not acceptable. It couldn't have come at a worse time than making these treks down to Anaheim so often.

Yesterday, TCB wrote:
I believe that the Artistic Director of Capital Playhouse would feel like a failure if he couldn't sneak at least one drag queen into every show
Actually, they just don't have a problem with "non-traditional" casting. :) Part of that might come from the kids shows during their summer theater program. There are always many more girls that they have to dress them up as boys. Not so much with the lead roles, but the choruses are filled with girls in suits dancing with girls in dresses. I would assume that that's not a problem unique to their program.
And then TCB wrote:
Actually, that is really an unfair (and rather snarky) comment. Capital Playhouse is actually one of the most successful theaters in the Northwest, due in large part to their Artistic Director. The proof of that can be found in shows such as their recent SWEENEY TODD starring Jarrod Emick.
I've heard stories (about Jarrod). This was not necessarily a good experience for the theater group. ::)

In a recent press conference, George W. Bush expressed a bit of surprise that one of his questions was about the ever-increasing rise in gasoline prices. "Interesting" was his comment, to which he added that he had not been aware.
Later in the SAME press conference, another reporter asked him why more attention had not been paid to a certain issue, to which Bush replied that he had been preoccupied with "other issues" like the increases in gasoline costs.

I'll be curious to read how those little grains of sand feel on your bare feet after the job is done. We had our balcony decks done five or six years back...there's some sort of grit mixed into a coating, and it's like a coarse sand paper. You won't "slip", though.

Choir Directors have to do UAs??? This doesn't sound right at all

I think Spitzer's biggest problem is that he is engaging in the act he spent so much time and energy prosecuting other for doing. You can't say you didn't know what you were doing in those circumstances. I don't feel sorry for him because of that.

We don't have a cafeteria. We have a "lunch room" where, if you bring your own food you may warm it up in the microwave or the toaster oven, and then sit at a counter or a table and consume said food. You may also purchase a wide array (not) of cold beverages including two different brands of cola and a brand of lemon-lime soda. They used to have V-8 but I think I was the only person drinking it so they stopped stocking it. There is also a vending machine with such healthy alternatives as Twix Bars, Snickers, Lays Potato Chips, Pretzels and the like.
The "lunch room" is the very place where I make my oatmeal each and every morning and the sink in the same room is the place where I clean the bowl.
I don't eat in the lunch room because I don't bring consumables. I go home for lunch and avoid the crowds.

This, of course, has been plagiarized by no less than P. D. Q. Bach, as the fourth part of the oratorio "Knock Knock," sub-titled "So this guy..."
P. D. Q. did change the story somewhat, so that the final payoff is sung as "Transporting young gulls across staid lions for immoral porpoises."
-
I'm not going to say "no," I'm going to say "HELL NO!!"

Ah! A reference to The Color Purple!

I have never had fried okra, in any form.
That will have to count as my faux pas. I'm keeping mum about the rest of 'em.

The annoying errand turned out to be not so annoying after all, so that was good. Then I talked to CD Baby on the phone, since I couldn't get a response to my e-mail. I got a notice last Tuesday that a payment would be coming (they always allow five days for it to hit my paypal account), and as of today it still hadn't arrived. This company is usually perfect in terms of responding to e-mails and such, so I was surprised not to have a response. I got someone on the phone who confirmed to me I'm one of many calls because their system went down last week for a day or two, and they're really backed up on responding to e-mails, and because the system was down, our payments from last week only actually went out yesterday, which means we're still three or four days away from actually getting it. Unfortunately, Kritzerland lives on these payments from CD Baby and amazon and when they're late it's always annoying.
-
I have had many faux pas...what the plural of faux pas? Where's Francois when I need him?
Anyway, I don't know that I remember a "worst" I just try to turn it into a joke of some sort and that usually does the trick. Or stay away from the people involved for a period of time so they, hopefully, forget whatever it was

Where IS Francois?

Well it turns out they did not in fact have a "cup" waiting for me--they had a letter informing me I had to drive another 35 miles out to some clinic in B*****k (that's how eBay lists it), Oregon, which I politely declined to do. I told them I was sick, I have a sick child at home, I am a parttime employee who only works on Tuesday and, sorry, I need more than 3 minutes' warning to reschedule my life. I told them I'd be happy to go to a closer-in clinic next Tuesday, my next scheduled workday. They just emailed me that "this time" it would be fine, but I'd better "comply" next time. Too funny.

It's a very summery day here in the City of Studio.
-
OH!
So, did anyone else keep thinking it was their phone vibrating while watching the footage of Spitzer's news conference? I kept checking my phone each time I heard that low hum, then realized it was coming from the TV. -And then I finally heard the reports about how some reporters had simply placed their cellphones on the podium since the news conference was called at the last minute, and some of them weren't able to get their station crews there in time!
-
It's a very summery day here too. I really don't want to be here and just may take the afternoon off again. I get like this before a vacation. I do have some reading to do on my structuring case - it was interesting that Spitzer's investigation started with a similar issue to one I'm working on right now- so sitting in my living room with the windows open sounds pretty good right now.
-
I also filled the car up with gas, although my gas meter seems not to be working correctly, or I simply don't know how many gallons my car actually holds - I don't think it's over sixteen, but maybe it is. If it IS sixteen, then even though the meter reads that there is still a quarter of a tank, there in fact is only a gallon or two at that point. Maybe I'll call the dealership and find out how much gas this thing actually holds.
-
The noise has stopped, I think they workers went to lunch. This might be the time to get the laundry downstairs.
-
Do you have a book in your glove compartment about your car? It should say in there. Or google your car make and year and size of gas tank....
Or you could call the dealership and let them figure it out :)

It is very spring-like here in Rehoboth Beach.

Yep, DR Jose, I heard a tape of the news conference on NPR when I was driving home last night, heard the hum, and reached for my phone, too.

A fellow actor pointed out to me a few years ago, that as I inhale for my first breath onstage, and my body begins its first step to walking onstage; I have an unconscious habit of brushing my hand over my fly to be sure that it was closed. After having it pointed out to me, I have caught myself doing it. On one show I found myself doing it, even though the pants I was wearing in this show had no fly.

For those who fly frequently.....I have been checking flights to Memphis from Portland. There are no non-stops. The flights with one stop (in Denver) only give you about 20 minutes to change planes. That doesn't seem like much time to me...flight lands at 2:22Pm and next flight departs at 3:00pm.
Is that normal, or is in necessary to book my flights in a different fashion (Peasant dress and black sandles).

I don't think the high got quite as high as they were forecasting. It was a bit too chilly to sit comfortably on the porch. But that was OK because I got quite a bit of mail.
Among the review discs that came in today were BEE MOVIE (complete with a lot of ridiculous publicity junk: yellow and black antenna and small bottles of honey).
ENCHANTED on Blu-ray also came in today, but since BEE MOVIE streets today, I had to do it first. More about it in a minute.

That's closer to 40 minutes, but it's a bit tight. At least, it's tight for a large airport. How large is the Denver airport? And is there a way to find out whether your connecting flight would be leaving out of the same terminal?

Why are you terrorizing flying to Memphis?
-
While I ate lunch, I watched the OLD CHRISTINE episodes from last night.
The first was the funniest as old CHristine is fixed up on a blind date by new CHristine. Only new Christine is too much of a space cadet to notice that the guys she's set Christine up with is 19 (Old Christine is 40). I really laughed a lot at all the uncomfortable situations that transpired and all the catty remarks being made. And when the kid's MOTHER comes to get him after he runs away from home, it was just too funny.
-
Why are you terrorizing flying to Memphis?
I was wondering about that, too. I figured there might be an interviewee living there...somebody who did western movies, perhaps....
-
Thus far, however, I've managed to avoid "low humming"
Just maintain a WIDE STANCE and you should be fine.
-
Just maintain a WIDE STANCE and you should be fine.
Thanks for the tip.
-
The second OLD CHRISTINE episode was less funny but more poignant. New Christine and Richard have bought a dream home, and of course it ended up being the house Old Christine had always wanted for her dream home. It drives her batty to see her ex-husband and his new girl friend luxuriating in her favorite house of all time.
Still, some good sight gags as Christine tries to turn her current house into a dream home with disastrous results.

If I'm remembering correctly, the Denver airport is very "connection" friendly - each of the terminals are exclusive to one airline - so you may just be going from gate to gate within the same terminal. So, it might be doable. However, you should go ahead and check to see what the next flight is out of Denver to Memphis, just to make sure you have that option. And if you really don't feel like rushing, then just call the airline directly, and book the later connecting flight.

With literally nothing else worth my time when these aired, I watched them both. The first was amusing. The second...UGH.
It's a strain for me to enjoy a show in which the main character is ALWAYS fortune's fool. As much as I loved "Frasier", I could always tell which episodes to avoid because the writers would set up Frasier and/or Niles as a major twit just waiting to be humiliated. I am never amused at this type of characterization. That second episode was only marginally better than any episode of "Joey", which is to say....Not For Me!

Umm... Well, not until he starts coordinates his beachwear with his beach accessories.
;)
-
Then I watched BEE MOVIE. It's mildly pleasant, mildly witty, but with this killer comic cast, it should have been much funnier. And the animation isn't the knockout detailed animation that the Pixar guys do either. It seems to have been done on the cheap compared to the Pixar projects.
Jerry Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger, Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, John Goodman, Patrick Warburton, Oprah Winfrey, Ray Liotta (his cameos are the funniest things in the movie, probably because he's not TRYING to be funny playing anything but himself), Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, Sting (of course someone with THAT name would HAVE to be in BEE MOVIE).
-
Umm... Well, not until he starts coordinates his beachwear with his beach accessories.
Well, OK. But it IS a nice basket.
-
The 2-disc set is loaded with bonus stuff, and I watched everything on disc one (and will listen to the commentary track tonight instead of doing EASTERN PROMISES tonight). I enjoyed seeing the cast recording their lines.
Unlike the Disney method which doesn't let people record together, Jerry often recorded scenes with Matthew Broderick, Chris Rock, Renee Zellweger, or Patrick Warburton in the studio with him where they would ad-lib, a lot of which they claim ended up in the movie. If it did because they thought it was so funny, the script must have REALLY been a dog.

I will be attending the Memphis Film Festival with Laurie Mitchell and Kenny Miller, among others, in June.

I think you have a frustrating time ahead.
Gasoline prices are surely going to increase some more - the advent of the summer reformulation requirements (government mandated) always adds to the cost/price.
The increase use of ethanol (government mandated) will add to the cost/price.
Higher prices at the well-head will always be reflected in higher prices at the pump.
Be thankful if gasoline stays under $4.00 by Labor Day.
And remember, many activists (me included) would like to see the Federal Government slap an additional $1.00/gallon tax on gasoline to act as a prod toward reducing fossile fuel consumption as part of an overall energy program.

Edi:
They loved the music (yay!) and their only changes were to add 3 or 4 more shows not on the list. So I should be able to finish it up tomorrow and then start on The Closer on Wed.
My fear was that it was nothing like they wanted and I would have to abandon the project to another editor.
Great news-Congrats! :)

Nothing is inevitable! It wouldn't be the first time an elected offical used an offer to quietly resign as a bargaining chip to avoid criminal prosecution (or at least reduce the charges).
Spitzer could opt to make NY go through a long, costly, messy impeachment process if he so chooses.

MBarnum, I don't know about anyone else, but I always want at least an hour between flights. That way if there is a short delay you can usually still make your connection. And they usually start boarding about 30 minutes or so before take off, so an hour is really 30 minutes, if that makes any sense. Denver isn't that bad. It's pretty big, but not bad to get around even if you have to take the rail to another terminal

Thankfully, my copy of The Sailor Who Fell From Grace From The Sea is right off the master tape - another gorgeous score.

How fast can we get to page ten?

Probably fast, if any one of our eighteen GUESTS would get off their butt cheeks and join in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.

So...
What the frell does Gov. Spitzer's inevitable resignation have to do with the inevitable criminal charges against him? The news people are positioning his resignation as a bargaining chip in the upcoming legal dealings. ????
Well, he was a prosecutor, so there's a chance they may say resignation is punishment enough. He is, after all, one of them. Cynical, yes but I've been doing this kind of work too long to think otherwise. On the other hand, he's a democrat, so criminal charges could be forth coming from this administration.

Just Tell Sherlock that he is An Actor Dog and His Role is A SAINT BERNARD. Should Work?
Well, he does do all sorts of tricks, and half the people out there think he is a Saint Bernard, so he could work. ;)
Jack Daniels could also work.

Is enjoying the services of a prostitute a misdemeanor?
-
It's warm enough here today to have the windows open. I came home a little early because of not feeling so hot and opened the window for the cats. Soon after I did that my neigbhor delivered my girl scout cookies. Yum. I may have to take a box to my mom as a hostess gift.

Is enjoying the services of a prostitute a misdemeanor?
I don't believe enjoyment is an element of the offense ;)
-

Hey, wait a minute! "THE new Guy Haines CD"?? Is this the possible new Kritzerland release that you mentioned but haven't really talked about or officially announced yet??
-
DR Laura what makes it a felony and makes it federal is that he supplied a train ticket for the prostitute to cross state lines and go from NYC to DC for purposes of sexual activity. That's a violation of the Mann Act and I believe it's a felony, maybe it's a misdemeanor, but I don't think so. What started the investigation is the structuring of cash withdrawals from a bank account in order to avoid having the bank file a cash transaction report with the IRS. This is definintely a federal felony. I have a client facing the same charges at this very moment
-
Thanks.
-
I guess I don't understand the cash withdrawal from your own bank account part of it.
-
Of course, being a lawyer, he would understand the circumstances under which withdrawing money would be a felony.

It is difficult to feel sorry for him, but the wife I do. I looked at her photo and wondered about her story & the reason she was standing next to him.
One of the woman at my book discussion group today was very upset his wife would degrade herself like that.
-
For a long time, I had the overture to Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along as the ringtone on my cell phone (I recently changed it to a clip from Side Show :)). I was listening to an on-line interview with Sondheim when they started playing clips of his music. One, of course, was the overture to Merrily. I reached for my phone without realizing that it was from the interview, not my phone! :-[
;)
-
I have not been able to keep my eyes open these last two days...maybe the time change does indeed mess up my system.

Because politicians' wives must stand by their husbands. At least literally. Until the news conference is over.

Financially she has a lot to loose if he is charged, more if he goes to jail. Maybe she can sell her story for some bucks.
-
I guess I don't understand the cash withdrawal from your own bank account part of it.
It's really goofy because the money doesn't have to be from ill gotten gains or used for an illegal purpose. But, there is a requirement that came about from the battles against organized crime and racketeering and is a way to prevent money laundering, at least that's how I understand it. The way it works is if there is a cash transaction of over $10,000, a bank is required to file what is called a cash transaction report with the government. It's really not that big a deal if everything is legit.
But if it isn't legit, people will deposit or withdraw in increments below that amount so that the transaction is not reported to the government. In other words if I want to take out $20,000 in cash, I could go in and take out $20,000 and there would be a CTR filed with the government saying I did that. But if I didn't want it reported to the government, I could take out 5,000 today, maybe 8000 the next day and so on so no on knows I did it.
I believe the Patriot Act or one of the similar new anti-terrorism acts placed more stringent rules on banks. I'm just looking into this, but banks have reacted by having computer programs that automatically generate a CTR (cash transaction report) for much lower amounts. The bank in my case generate one for anything over $3000. They aren't sent in, but it helps keep track of cash payments and withdrawals. Then banks will file a "suspicious activity report" with the government if they thing someone may be structuring (That's the word for trying to keep the amount below the reporting requirement by making several deposits or withdrawals).
The way I understand it, it was one of the suspicious activity reports that led to the government investigating Spitzer. They initially believed it may be some sort of bribe etc and discovered prostitution instead.
Does that help any? Bottom line, it's always the money trail that gets you. Income tax evasion, structuring etc.

No....and that's (generality ALERT!!!) because men are pigs.
Women who stand by their whoring men generally do so out of the sense of commitment they bring to a marriage. They may, some of them, even LOVE the bastards.
But men who are married to women who seek satisfaction from other men are perceived as "not up to the task" and are humiliated by it.

Thanks, Cillaliz. I had no idea the bank reported to the Guvment when we spend our own money.
I save my paycheck all year in order to pay for the yearly home improvement. I wonder if the Guvment is notified.

That IS a possibility. But one would hope he would be "smart" about it.
All sorts of arrangements are possible. The mind boggles at just what Hillary and Bill have moderated between them.

One never knows what arrangements consenting adults or couples have made, so I'm not judgmental about the sex part of this. It's the prosecuting prostitution rings and preaching how horrible it is for society and then going out and procuring the services you have said are so horrible for society that I have a problem with.

DR TCB:
'Big Brother' and Jennifer
Yes, that is what that post should have said yesterday evening. Thanks for being kind!
Jennifer:
No, you didn't miss anything. I had one thing on my mind while my fingers typed something else. Anyhoo....I hope against hope that the public vote one of the evicted ladies back into the house....this is the golden opportunity to spoil Matt's "plan" to "rule the house" as Boys Club. I despise Matt.
I would not have minded seeing Alex return, but we don't really need two mooks in the house. Jen would be a pleasant surprise and it would give her an opportunity to mend things with Ryan (if he's still interested in her).
I cannot understand why Sheila hasn't gone on the block. I hate her with ever fiber of my being.
I'm sorry Ron. I was honestly confused by your post; but then I am easily confused by those sweet-talking city fellas.

Yesterday, TCB wrote:Actually, they just don't have a problem with "non-traditional" casting. :) Part of that might come from the kids shows during their summer theater program. There are always many more girls that they have to dress them up as boys. Not so much with the lead roles, but the choruses are filled with girls in suits dancing with girls in dresses. I would assume that that's not a problem unique to their program.
And then TCB wrote:I've heard stories (about Jarrod). This was not necessarily a good experience for the theater group. ::)
George, regardless of the stories or the non-tradional casting, I really had no business bashing Jeff's theater. I have actually never met the man, although my step-son worked there for many seasons, and may still work there, for all I know.

I remember a long time ago hearing that in big criminal cases, the lawyers might investigate the potential jurors -- have them followed and stuff.
No doubt with the internet now, they can do it all from the office.
-
Or do you mean "step-son," like Jed is your "son"??
-
When I used to work with elementary and high school students in Virginia and Maryland, I was required to get fingerprinted and checked for past criminal activity each year I was with the program. And, of course, I had to go to my nearest police precinct to get the fingerprinting done. :-\
I can understand background checks and fingerprinting, we use the same things for employees of Children's Services, but the UA for a choir director still seems strange.

I'll have to find out later. I have some errands to run before rehearsal tonight. Until later!

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!
Not living here in Rehoboth, you don't take a stance like that!!!
We're dependent upon tourist bucks here in this resort town, in case you've forgotten. The pricier it is for tourists to travel from place to place, the less likely it is for the tourists to travel at all. WE NEED THEIR MONEY!!!
And yes, that includes me, a supermarket checker. We've already been through three summers of wonderfully busy working, and have made it somehow through three winters of very slack work hours. The last thing we want is for the tourists to stay away! WE WANT THEM HERE!!! SPENDING MONEY AT OUR STORES, NOT AT THE GAS PUMP!!!
Lower gas prices is good for the economy!

Hi Jose! How is the tour business? ;)

You know, I never really thought there really was a bedbug. I just thought it was something you said--"Sleep tight, Don't let the bedbugs bite."
If anything, I thought they were from back when people used straw and "bedbugs" were fleas or some such.
Who knew?
That's what I'm talking about.

I must say, I don't really understand the young actor's work ethic in LA and never have, although it's much worse now than before. But then again, the young actor ethic in NY as regards the NYMF showcase code is also baffling and not something I understand at all. Certainly wasn't that way in MY day.
It's not just actors, bk, it's all young people. I used to think it was just CA, but I guess it exists other places, too. Lots of kids these days don't know what it is to work for something and be proud of their accomplishments. Especially when they have existed through life this far with parents handing them things.
(no offense to DR vixmom)

I have to agree with DR Matthew. It's not just work but a lack of respect. I'm going to be fifty in May and I still say "Yes, Sir/Ma'am" or "No, Sir/Ma'am" (even to the check out person who ARE only kids) and I was told by one that they don't say that because they don't feel that they have to unless the person has earned their respect.
My butt still remembers the respect for any person older then I that was drilled into it when I was their age and so (therefore) does my mouth. I don't think that the attitude adjustment area (the butt) is fine tuned quite as much as it needs to be these days.

No, it is NOT all young people. Yes, there are kids who can't be bothered with working for a paycheck - even when they're on the payroll.
But there are also a lot of kids out there who very gladly and cheerfully go the extra mile, and I'm personally glad to know them. Tarring all young people with the same brush does these hard working younger men and women a great disservice.
And, worse, it isn't something that can be attributed to the parents. Of der Grampa's grandlads, we've got one who will make us proud, and the other could care less about anyone but himself. We can't exactly blame the parenting on this one. :P

I'm sorry for the pain. Back pain is real bear. The surgery I had helped mine so much.
I went to the doctor yesterday. I had a massive allergic reaction to “something”. I had a 102 fever on Friday. The doctor had to give me a shot and put me on antibiotics (which is why I’m so tired—those things always pull me down) but I’m doing better.
The fever is gone and the “rash” is fading.
We're waiting for the bloodwork to come back but I was told that we may never know what the cause was. Scary becasue if I don't know what caused it, how do I know what to stay away from? :-\

The book that came with the car, the one that usually stays in the glove compartment, should have that information. Look in the back of the book at the index it is usally list under gas capacity or soemthign like that.

ROTFLOL.
I took Sherlock and he was almost perfect. I did not see any other dogs today :), which may be why he was so good.
-
No, not ALL young people but I would say there are quite a few. Much more then when we were growing up.
I don't think that's true.
I very clearly remember the "older generation" wailing about how the "younger generation" was turning out back when I was growing up. Remember, all those "hippies" with their long hair and you couldn't tell who was a guy or who was a girl (which was strange, because I could always tell who was a guy ;D), and the beads and the drugs and they were losing their way and so on and so forth.
The difference was, while we were growing up we were much more aware of how our peers behaved, mainly because we were around them all the time (at school and afterwards). The adults were only seeing us/them sporadically, and it was only when their attention was jerked to awareness by one or two of us being rude or misbehaving that they (the adults) took notice of us.
So, we were being judged by the actions of a small minority.
Just the same as the kids are being judged today.
I see a lot of kids while I'm at the store. Some of them are jerks. Some are wonderful. Most are just trying to fly under the radar, same as in our generation, staying out of trouble and unnoticed.
BTW, I regularly say "sir" and "ma'am" to the customers, regardless of age. It startles the kids, sometimes, and then they kinda go "OK," and smile. Terms of respect are terms of respect. They just aren't expected all the time.

Thanks for this.
I can’t help wondering if Hillary prepared her for the current situation.
My bet is Hillary is cursing and wondering "What is it with the men in my life?"

DR Cillaliz, my DH says he thought the Patriot Act expired and was not renewed.
-
Can someone give me a good recommendation for a recording of "Carmina Burana"??
Here are my two favorite recordings/renditions:

and
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41DYVT004WL._AA240_.jpg)
However, there are a couple of classic recordings that will serve you well:

DR Matthew, this won a lot of Grammy several years ago and it's quite good.
-
DR Laura, portions were renewed and portions weren't
From the Whitehouse website:
On March 9, 2006, President Bush Signed The USA PATRIOT Improvement And Reauthorization Act Of 2005. Since its enactment in October 2001, the Patriot Act has been vital to winning the War on Terror and protecting the American people. The legislation signed today allows intelligence and law enforcement officials to continue sharing information and using the same tools against terrorists already employed against drug dealers and other criminals. While safeguarding Americans' civil liberties, this legislation also strengthens the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) so that it can better detect and disrupt terrorist threats, and it also gives law enforcement new tools to combat threats. America still faces dangerous enemies, and no priority is more important to the President than protecting the American people without delay.
-
This was one of my first recordings from the 1960s, and it's still wonderful!
-
OH! And there's also Robert Shaw's recording on Telarc with his Atlanta forces.
-
... While safeguarding Americans' civil liberties.....
??? ??? ???

It's not just actors, bk, it's all young people. I used to think it was just CA, but I guess it exists other places, too. Lots of kids these days don't know what it is to work for something and be proud of their accomplishments. Especially when they have existed through life this far with parents handing them things.
(no offense to DR vixmom)
I never imagined you were referring to Vixmom here. IMHO teaching a work ethic has nothing to do with how much you give your children, more the quality of what you give them and what you expect from them as people. It is also important to make sure their early jobs are with places that train their employees properly.
-
I don’t like being called Ma'am, it makes me cringe. I do like being treated with respect and kindness. :)
-
There are portions of the FISA act that expired but I'm thinking they are working on that one.
-
??? ??? ???
Hey, that was from the Whitehouse website...not from me
-
Thank you, Cillaliz.

Danise, I hope you feel better soon. My roommate has the same issues- she has soooo many food allergies, and it seems like she adds a few new ones every year. Last year she had to use her epi-pen and make a visit to the ER because of something that she had for lunch. She couldn't pinpoint what it was, but she is pretty sure that it was cranberries. She is also pretty sure that she is allergic to MSG- but again, can't be totally sure.

When I lived in Richmond - well, and whenever I head back to Memphis or Chattanooga or Charlotte etc. - it took me a while to get used to be called, "Hon" at restaurants.
However, sometimes being called "Sir" does make me a little uncomfortable, but that all depends on the situation. ;)
-
I have gotten used to being called ma'am. I am still trying to get used to the Boy Scouts helping me cross the street, though.
-
We are cat sitting my friend's siamese mutt kittens. Pierre is out of his mind, running around the apartment with his little chest puffed out, hissing at them.
-
We need kitten pictures!
-
The kittens are unfazed by his antics. Killbot is politely ignoring all 3 of them. It should be an interesting week.
-
I don’t like being called Ma'am, it makes me cringe. I do like being treated with respect and kindness. :)
I hate it when they call me Ma'am, too.
-
We need kitten pictures!
I'm sure there will be quite a few photo opportunities over the next few days. Wild Kingdom type photos.
-
She couldn't pinpoint what it was, but she is pretty sure that it was cranberries.
That could explain Coleslaw's behavior this week!
-
If Pierre was one of my kids at work, I would say that he is extremely agitated, provocative and has very limited frustration tolerance.
-
That could explain Coleslaw's behavior this week!
Coleslaw will be the name of my next cat.
-
DR Matthew, this won a lot of Grammy several years ago and it's quite good.
Wow, Carmina has put out a lot of CDs! Would you say that she is folk-rock, or new age?

Sometimes a combination of ingredients can cause a stronger reaction than one ingredient alone does. This often happens to me. Thank goodness my reactions are nothing like your roommate's. That is very scary.

As for tonight's "American Idol".... Very, very interesting. And I mean that in a good way and a bad way.
It actually seemed like a competition for the first time this season.
-
I'm off to check on Keith, that guy I live with who swears he is not a workaholic. His fever went down this morning so this afternoon he went outside and worked on the yard. Now is fever is back and he feels terrible.
-
This evening I found out my friend's father died. They were close. With his death she will also find out if her brother did to her what the Macbeth's tried to do to our DR elmore.

Well, here's a problem: when you are working as a salesperson/cashier, unless you actually know the name of the person you are serving, there's got to be a generic name/title that can be used when referring to the person is required. In these cases, we're generally reduced to referring to the person by their gender, as in "Ma'am, you forgot your keys."
I find "Miss" condescending. And there's no way I'm going to refer to anyone as "Bee-yatch."
Sure, some people are going to find "ma'am" irritating. But as a salesperson/cashier/server, I really don't have much choice.
A genuine smile works wonders, of course.
-
It's so good to see DR Danise back where she belongs! :-*
-
But as a salesperson/cashier/server, I really don't have much choice.
A genuine smile works wonders, of course.
I just call everybody "darlin;" well, almost everybody. . .I do try to read the names on the credit cards and call people by the name there.
But, you sure are right about the smile. ;D
-
I hate it when they call me Ma'am, too.
I'd never call you "Ma'am," I'd be forced to call you "Cutie-Pie."
;)

MSG is a naturally occuring substance. It can be found in mushrooms, Parmesan cheese, soy sauce, anchovies. Some form of glutimate can be found in almost every processed food. If your roommate is genuinely allergic to MSG, she's in real trouble.
On the other hand, there are no reported deaths from MSG. So there's some good news.

Wear leather wherever you go, it'll come naturally to everyone around you.

RE: IDOL
spoiler space if anyone thinks my comments are spoilers.
I saw the whole show minus the last 2 singers (i was watching BB).
I agree with DR jose in that it actually seemed like a real comp for the first time.
I enjoyed David cook again. And also liked brooke white. I don't think she is the best singer. But there is something so endearing about her. She just seems so good and lovely. ANd it comes across.
I do not like david hernandez.
I also do not really care for Chikezie (sp?). But i really liked him tonight.
And i liked carly.

Did you read the article about MSG in last week's NY Times' Dining & Wine section? Pretty good read.
-
DR Jennifer - OH!!! So you missed David Archuleta's performance.... WHOA! ;)
-
Funny how our minds work or don't work sometimes. I was in first year law school in 1980-81 with Silda Wall, and remember meeting her a number of times, to some extent staying in my memory because she had such a distinctive name. But as crazy as this may seem, until yesterday, I had no idea she was Mrs. Spitzer. (She must have taken a year off or something like that if she ended up graduating from law school in 1984 rather than 1983.)
-
Six degress... Well, I guess, more like "one degree"...
-
Did you read the article about MSG in last week's NY Times' Dining & Wine section? Pretty good read.
No, I had not read it. The NYT is not very high on my list of must-reads. New York City is not the center of my world. Although I enjoy Bruni's blog.
But the article, when I found it, proved an interesting read. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/05/dining/05glute.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=dining) It mostly confirmed everything I've come across before.
One interesting paragraph:
In upscale restaurants, whether by tradition or by inclination, chefs are unlikely to use monosodium glutamate. “We don’t need to use Ajinomoto because we can get the ingredients that have natural umami: shiitake mushrooms, egg yolks, shellfish, masago,” said Sotohiro Kosugi, the chef of Soto in New York.
So, we can now add egg yolks to the list of foods people terrified by MSG can't eat, just because it "might" trigger a reaction.
I'm just shaking my head in bewilderment.
-
Well, there WERE over five hundred people who were in that first-year class of with her.
-
Der Brucer has been watching Jericho. There was a whole lot of gunfire, and someone shouted out "Who's there?"
Something inside me wanted Chevy Chase to respond, saying "CandyGram."
-
DR DANISE!!!!!!
DR MATTHEW - I actually bought a "bargain" Carmina Burana that I like a lot. I can't find it on Amazon, but it might still be around in the shops. Damn, now I can't even find my copy, but it was a two disc set.
Speaking of which.....DRMBARNUM....is it Hoover Damn or Boulder Damn?
-
Just to make some people out there really irritated:
The Daylight Savings Time Shift hasn't bothered me one bit.
My work schedule bounces around so much that I don't have a regular sleeping schedule. Some days I have to get up very early. Some days I get to sleep in. Some days, after work, I come home and take a nap. Sometime I don't.
Life is good.
;D
-
DR RLP I also got a Black Widder in my mailbox today, and watched it.
The short features on Ginger and Gene were interesting, and I am looking forward to the commentary by someone I am unfamiliar with.
Robert Osborn appears in the extras and it seems he was interviewed many pounds ago.
-
I like the movie....the color is great to start with but fades a little toward the end of the movie....but the settings and costumes are great....and there is an interesting score by Leigh Harline.
-
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a Hoover.
-
Well the election news went as expected.....Judith Carson's grandson was elected to fill her space....as the most absent member of congress ever....I am sure he will uphold her tradition handsomely.
And no Carson family member now needs to fear being thrown off the government payroll....at least for awhile.
-
I grew up using "sir" and "m'am" with all adults, and I know when I taught I really APPRECIATED the children who used it with me.

I didn't buy Dangerous Crossing....which seems to have been filmed on leftover sets from "Titanic".....
And I seem to remember it's one of those Lady on a Train/Flightplan type plots that end up not making much sense. 8)
-
I began my evening by listening to the audio commentary on the BEE MOVIE DVD. Much too crowded with too many people, they got sidetracked a lot, love everybody connected with the movie, and talked about some missing scenes, some of which were not in the deleted scenes elsewhere on the disc.
-
Time for bed......first some computer stuff.....and then a movie.....
-
DR RLP I also got a Black Widder in my mailbox today, and watched it.
Oh gees! I thought you meant a black widow spider as I read this. Of course I doubt they would be in Indiana any time, let alone in March. I used to see them in Phoenix quite often
-
I also watched all of the second disc of bonus features. There were actually some good things on it. There was a very informative trivia game on bees where I learned that the one color bees can't see is red, and that bees have five eyes and no ears.
Some other stuff wasn't all that great, and there was a shameless plug for the other Dreamworks animated films called "jukebox" which was animated moments from the other seven movies they've done (nothing from ANTZ) to advertise that they were available on DVD.
-
Next, I had about 40 minutes before 9 p.m. (when I had decided I'd start watching my recoding of IDOL), so I put in the 1951 SHOW BOAT and watched it upconverted. The color is VERY saturated (perhaps just a touch too much), but I'd rather have that than undersaturated Technicolor.
I'll continue watching it tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.
-
Then I started with IDOL. I agree with the others. For the first time, it really did seem like a competition where people were really bringing the best they had to offer to the table. That said:
Carly was the best by a very wide margin. A total pro with superb vocals and stage presence that makes the rest of them look clumsy and amateurish. She just knows how to move to the music and how to use her arms and the mic beautifully.
#2 for me was David Cook. He was excellent, gave a nice rock vibe to the music, and overall had real presence on the stage.
I hate to admit it but I finally halfway enjoyed Amanda Overmeyer tonight. I think that vocal style will get very tired before much longer, but I did feel she sang in tune tonight and did a better than average job entertaining.
Michael Johns had a nice rendition, too.
Most horrible for me tonight was Jason Castro. I thought he was simply dreadful with a falsetto that didn't work part of the time (not the first time that's happened) and a really forgettable rendition of the song.
David Hernandez, my favorite male singer until tonight, was way off the mark with a song that had notes too low for him and a breathlessness about him that made him sing off pitch often and made him try too hard to overcompensate.
Both of the first two women (Syesha and Ramiele) seemed scared to death and gave poor performances. And, of course, David Archeleta forgot his lyrics in a couple of places and was just way out of his element. He took the criticism well, however, so he should be safe.
So, I'd like to see Jason go, but he seems to be a favorite of the swoony preteens so I'm picking either one of those two girls or David Hernandez to leave tomorrow night.
-
JERICHO had another smashing and suspenseful show. Again, some real surprises and great drama.
However, the imbeciles at my local CBS affiliate forgot the flip the HDTV switch at 10:49, so I had to watch the last ten minutes of the show in SD rather than HD. They'll get a sassy note from me.
-
Did a nice interview tonight with actor Robert Brown, costar of THE FLAME BARRIER (1958) and Roger Corman's TOWER OF LONDON (1962). He also starred in the tv series HERE COME THE BRIDES and a the short lived TV show PRIMUS.
He worked on Broadway in the late 40s and early 50s with the likes of Dame Judith Anderson, Helen Hayes, Ann Harding, Lotta Lenya and John Garfield.
Fun guy to chat with!
-
I have two magazines waiting for me to send them interviews, so I must get cracking on these this week!!! I am so far behind!

I'm heading down to bed now.
Good night!
-
We went to the movies today.
Feel good fun - the delightful Simon Pegg.
-
Got a couple of March 15th due-date returns done.
Good night.
-
Back from our read-through and more about it in the notes - the only real problem is that I was reading General Mills and the script I was using nobody has bothered to update for a year, so it was very confusing.
-
Nobody here but us chickens.
