I had the enormous pleasure of meeting Rip Torn a decade ago. I was attending the full cast panel discussion (at CBS studios) of THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW, which is still one of the most devastatingly funny evenings I've ever spent. I was a huge fan of the show, and afterwards, the one guy whose hand I wanted to shake was Torn's. As is my wont, I made an incredible fool of myself, asking him in all seriousness if Anthony Hopkins had sought his advice about portraying Richard Nixon for the film "Nixon." (Torn is famous for having portrayed Tricky Dick.) Rip entertained my question with a cocked eyebrow, drew himself up to his full height and responded somberly: "No, of course not."

Currently in my CD player: An anthology of songs by Faye Wong, arguably China's most beloved pop singer of the last 20 years. It is safe to say that I am an obsessed fan. This be her:

'Mask' makeup designer brings illusion to stage
Michael Westmore brought 'Rocky' Dennis to life for the screen. Now it's for the stage.
By Diane Haithman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

…
The 1985 movie "Mask" -- the true story of Roy L. "Rocky" Dennis, a Southern California teenager who died of the disease at age 16 -- brought the condition to the attention of the public
While most people never encounter the disorder, makeup designer Michael Westmore has had to deal with it twice: once for the movie, now for "Mask" the stage musical, opening Friday at the Pasadena Playhouse. It features Allen E. Read as Rocky, with music and lyrics by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and a book by "Mask" screenwriter Anna Hamilton Phelan.

By the way, "I'm Still Here" is one of my favorite songs by the power-pop band Vertical Horizon. I am going to go out on a limb and predict that BK does not know the song or the band, but the track is worth seeking out.
The cities grow, the rivers flow
Where you are, I'll never know
But I'm still here.
If you were right and I was wrong
Why are you the one who's gone
And I'm still here?
Still here.

My two Rip Torn stories:
1. When I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth and around fifteen, I hitchhiked regularly (in the days when one hitchhiked without too much fear). One fine day I was thumbing a ride and got picked up by a nice man. He chatted me up and I told him I wanted to be an actor. He was very nice, and then told me he was an actor - I asked his name and he said Rip Torn. I didn't know if he was kidding or not, with a name like that, but he was really nice and gave me not only a ride, but good wishes for a career as an actor.
2. Flash forward to 1993. I'm pretty much out of the acting business and firlmy entrenched in producing CDs. But, I still occasionally go on commercial interviews, even though I don't want to. My agent calls me in the car and asks if I can go to an appointment in Hollywood, and since I'm just a few minutes from where it is, I go, for the role of a scientist. I walk in and there are twenty actors there, all wearing lab coats. I'm in a t-shirt and jeans. I go in for my interview and do the bit, and the director comes up to me, pats me on the shoulder and says, "Thank God, someone subtle who's not wearing a lab coat." It was the one and only commercial I ever got without a callback. The director turned out to be Frank Oz. And my co-star in the commercial for Energizer was Mr. Torn.

Brian d’Arcy James will play the title role in “Shrek the Musical,” DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions Ltd. announced. The Broadway show, to begin previews in November, will also star Chester Gregory II as Donkey, John Tartaglia as Pinocchio, Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, and Kecia Lewis-Evans as the Dragon.
Now I, like Bretty and others, am not fond of the recent rash of movies to musicals phenom but I do love me some Brian d'Arcy James and some Christopher Sieber and some John Tartaglia!

Flipping out is a time honored American tradition. Flipping out because of traffic is a necessary part of one's day.
-
I think that ANY movie featuring Burgess Meredith should have the word Torture in the title.

The only way I would see said SHREK or MASK would be if sometime during they evening they promised to trot Miss Carroll Baker out onstage and let her stand there in a long white evening gown smoking a cigarette in a white holder. That I might go to see.

I have an Ethel Merman compilation called An Earful of Merman-Songs from Her Films and Shows, 24 songs ranging from An Earfull of Music to Let's Be Buddies. I also have the OBC of The Secret Garden.
We may watch something on the VCR or DVD tonight. I don't know yet. We have laundry to do and then dinner and then we will figure it out.
I have mucho theatre coming up. From Tuesday the 25th of March through Tuesday the 15th of April I have a show each week.

Very exciting theatre news, DR BEN. We are awaiting the reviews.
I remember the movie MASK did not at any time during its initial run let any photographs of the the makeup be in the advertising. I still don't get it. He looks like a Westmore character from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.
I am glad DR MBARNUM is enjoying War of the Satellites. It is one of those movies that posits the theory that US spaceships have HUGE nearly empty rooms with very high ceilings and sliding doors....and that the crew sit in roomy barcoloungers for takeoffs and landings.

Bad Musicals Festival '08 submissions deadline is March 31
NO, these are not bad plays, they have to be really GOOD plays that are politically incorrect, political satire, contain bad language/bad puns, or the ilk. They can be musicals, plays with music, or any combination of the two, but under 45 minutes. Produced/unproduced okay.

Good morning, all! Last night, I dreamed that I was visiting my parents in our old house on Goldman Avenue, and during the night, someone entered the house and stole my computer, relacing it with another. Curiously, the computer looked more like a portable 1960s stereo phonograph, but I was all fraught over lost passwords and info. My parents were completely apathetic no matter how much I carried on with phone calls to the police and general concerned behavior. I have no idea what provoked this one!
So, I've spent the last hour in contemplation of my family relationships, from my mother and father to Randy and Jo and the Macbeths, and that leads to nuclear family relationships and my position in those. Hmmm . . .
Today, hopefully new glasses frames will arrive and I can see again clearly, and I have some writing and some cleaning.

Well, I've told my Rip Torn stories before, but since there are new Hainsies here, I'll repeat them:
Rip and Gerry were longtime friends of my Uncles. My Uncles in fact found the Torn-Pages (funny, eh?) their longtime family house in Westchester (IIRC). When I went back to NYC for the first time as a kid, my Uncle, who, like BK, knew everyone, asked me whom I would like to meet. He nixed my first two choices--"Uncle Lenny", because he said he wouldn't trust the Maestro alone with me, LOL, and then my second choice, Shirley MacLaine, because she was in China at the time filming that documentary of hers. Somehow the default choice turned out to be Rip Torn and Gerry Page, whom they called and woke at some ungodly hour of the morning and then stuck me on the phone with. Like BK, I thought they were kidding about Rip Torn's name (I was a kid, I had never heard of him, sorry). Luckily, I knew about "Sweet Bird of Youth," so was able to spout a few inanities to Ms. Page about her performance. It was easily the most awkward phone conversation of my life.
Rip gave the eulogy at my Uncle Charlie's funeral many years later. He was doing Larry Sanders when my Uncle Pat died, and so his son, Tony, came and read a very sweet eulogy that Rip had written.

That lived within the heart of me.
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free.
So I told the friendly star
The way that dreamers often do-
Just how wonderful you are,
And why I'm so in love with you.
Now I shout it from the highest hills -
Even told the golden daffodils.
At last my heart's an open door-
And my secret love's no secret anymore.

I went to the health food store to pick up a few groceries. I never realized how much drama can take place while food shopping. The person doing the bagging at my check-out was quite slow and the checker was oblivious. She kept checking, despite the fact that the bagger was two customers behind. When she finished ringing me up she was impatient for me to slide my credit card through the machine, but, because of the back-up, I was still a couple feet from said machine. I tried to explain that we were backed-up, but she was far from interested. Then the lady behind me got impatient because her groceries had been rung up, but things weren't moving. Short of plowing into the woman ahead of me, I really didn't see what I could do about it. I was hoping the manager would appear before a riot broke out. Then the bagger asked me if the woman behind me and I were friends--because, presumably we'd exchanged a couple words. At that point it was all too ludicrous.
I have new compassion for DR Woody's work life.

But I did come across the key-lime yogurt that der B mentioned the other day. It's interesting, but strawberry and raspberry are still tied for first place.
-
Enjoyed lunch out today. It was great walking around in the fresh air and sunshine. I hope I push myself too quickly to get over whatever it was that I had.
-
When I got in, I finished THE WIZARD OF OZ which I had started yesterday. Grand, as always.
-
I also watched the featurette on the restoration of the film using Ultra-Resolution. They said that THE WIZARD OF OZ is the most protected film that they know about with about 7 or 8 sets of unable elements. They were able to use the camera negative to do the Ultra-Resolution version.
-
I then watched a couple of NUMB3RS episodes. In the first one, different power stations around LA were being sabotaged each night. Very ingenious plan at killing someone: one of the show's better crime drama episodes.
-
The second one had to do with the death of a baseball player by an overdose of steroids. Very easy mystery to solve in this one. Jon Hamm (star of MAD MEN) was the primary guest star as the player's agent.
-
That's the title of my next novella - On the Prowl for A New Member.
Which begs the question...what did you do that requires you find a "new" member?
Or...to be more delicate...how is that you became "dis"-membered?
:D

And when he saw what he had done
He gave his father forty-one.

Back from doing some errands. I was thinking about jogging but my legs are REALLY sore so I think I'll wait until Sunday or maybe tomorrow.
-
Anyone know if the DRG release of the 1977 version of A Party With Betty Comden and Adolph Green has ever been re-release. (The version I have (2 CDs) has one long track on each disc.)
-
Have I mentioned that my legs are sore?

Friday Media Check:
CD - ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (studio cast with Doris Day/Robert Goulet)
I never hated a recording of Annie Get Your Gun more than this one. I bought the original LP release as a kid and appalled at the orchestrations. (Although at that time I didn't know exactly what that was) I was so used to hearing and had the Ethel Merman's version engrained in my head that I could not overcome the new sound. I am sure Robert Goulet was a perfect Frank Butler but not to my young ears in this version
-
Was this a standard version of the film or Blu-ray?
Standard. The Blu-ray version is not slated until next year.

Not a very theatrical version of the score at all, but Day's vocals are delectable and Goulet was born to play Frank Butler. This was the first LP version of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN that I owned, so I came to it with NO preconceived notions of what it should sound like.
-
Standard. The Blu-ray version is not slated until next year.
I'll bet it's spectacular upconverted....I'll have to find out...in due course of time...

And now I'm going to head down and clean the den. Being ill has gotten me off my cleaning schedule big time, so looks like the kitchen floor will have to go another week before getting mopped. It will survive, and I KNOW I will!

I'll bet it's spectacular upconverted....I'll have to find out...in due course of time...
Absolutely. And I did watch it using the Toshiba. The film grain was more noticeable using the Toshiba and my "new" TV.

I gotta tell you.

I guess I'll slowly start to get ready to leave for the Dena of Pasa.

Off to do chores, probably watch another NUMB3RS episode, and then get down to reviewing chores with UNBREAKABLE.

Coincidence! Yesterday I had "Secret Love" in my head too DR WhipCrack. I had been listening to Freddy Fender's version earlier. The 1963 version by England's Kathy Kirby gets considerable airplay here on "oldies" radio.

This was in our weekly employee bulletin for this week:
Did you know…?
Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20).
This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.
This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above).
The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228. The last time it was this early was 1913.
Just had to share. :)

To DR Mr Spaghetti's Stolen songs: - I have the suspicion that ALW's "Love Changes Everything" lurks somewhere in the "Candide" Overture.

Hiya, gang!!
Well, I've been scribbling up a storm - and they insist on giving me free tix to everything, so I've just come from a great concert at Disney Hall (yes, they have some at 11 AM on Fridays!) with Janine Jansen playing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto -- see my article about it on www.fineartsla.com
I looked at that 3d numerology url - some intersting ideas.

Lovely to see you posting DR PennyO.

I expected to be doing a lot more Lost spoiler-dodging last night and today than I've had to do. :)
That's because "Lost" aired Wednesday evening...and because the storyline was rather linear (even with the lengthy flashback). Of course, the usual suspects weren't avidly posting about it, and that kept me a bit silent about it, too.
I totally didn't know what to make of the final minutes and couldn't have speculated (even now) had I wanted to.
-

I suspect you'll find every single note that Sondheim ever wrote was used first by Richard Rodgers in his "Carousel" overture.

Doing a little Spring cleaning. I've got stuff sitting in my dresser drawers from twenty years ago. Some very nice t-shirts, so I can wear those, but lots of sweaters and shirts that no longer fit and are not exactly in style. So, I now have a completely empty drawer and about fourteen new never-before-worn t-shirts hanging in the closet. Said closet is next - I'm guessing I can get rid of about half of what's in there.

My in-laws have arrived.
-
Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me.
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free.
So I told the friendly star
The way that dreamers often do-
Just how wonderful you are,
And why I'm so in love with you.
Now I shout it from the highest hills -
Even told the golden daffodils.
At last my heart's an open door-
And my secret love's no secret anymore.
from the movie Calamity Jane, 1953

I thought the flashbacks with michael were quite good. It was very interesting to find out that he and walt returned home yet nobody knew it (so walt is not one of the oceanic 6). But i was expecting more of the ending. They kept saying someone would die. And they showed all our favorites. Yet the "people" who died (assuming they both did) were not people i really care about I mean it was sad and all. But it would have been more interesting if they had shown ben (or somebody) as the shooter.

As we move to Page 2 this announcement:
George, I think you and I need to talk about getting tickets for that one. Even Mikey might want to drive up and see his close and personal friend, Brian d'Arcy James.

We get around the bagging problem by having the checkers doing the bagging at the same time as they check. Most of our baggers are still in high school, and only available on weekends.
Every once in a while, a customer goes to where the bagger would normally be working, and then is astounded when I start bagging. Apparently, in some areas (like New Jersey), the customers are expected to bag. I can't see it, myself - bagging is a courtesy, and we are always courteous to our customers.
Of course, there are some cutomers we know well enough to tease a bit, but that's different. ;D

The first time I went to a market that had a "bag it yourself" checkout was in New Jersey at the Pathmark. It was also the first super-sized market I ever went to. When we went shopping there it could take hours. ;D
I like where there is a bagger at the checkout as it usually goes faster. Our discount market has a bag it yourself policy. The prices are better so we often shop there even though we don't care for the store.

DR TOMOVOZ:
My friend Sydney, who likes a lot of the same films I do, told me the other day that she was quite impressed with THE STREET. When I said that I couldn't get past the first episode, she said that she had trouble the first time, too. She saw it first on BBC AMERICA--the first episode or so--then later saw the whole series on DVD. So I guess I'm not the only one who had that reaction; I'll try it again at some point since both of you praise it so highly.

Since I was just a few stops away, I ventured out to Brooklyn for dinner. My friend, Michael, joined me. We ended up at ChipShop (http://chipshopnyc.com/) for dinner. I hadn't been out there in a while, and didn't realize they had sold off the other half of their restaurant - there used to be an accompanying "Curry Shop" next door that shared the same entrance. Now it's a Mediterranean place. ChipShop is not exactly a big place, but the shared entrance and "lobby" entrance helped to ease the crowding while waiting for a table. Well, with that are gone... There were lots of Please's and Thank You's being bandied about as people shifted around each time the door opened or someone got up from their table. In any case...
We both enjoyed our Fish (Cod) & Chips - and they have the really good malt vinegar too from England - no ketchup necessary. We also split an order of their Fried Mac&Cheese. YUM! And since it's Easter season, they were featuring Deep-Fried Cadbury Eggs, so, needless to say, we both tried one. -Consequently, we took a nice walk around Park Slope before we hopped back on the train back into Manhattan. And since it was Michael's first trip to the ChipShop, he also tried their Deep-Fried Twinkie served with a Raspberry Coulis. I believe he liked it very much. ;)

At my beloved Ukrop's in Richmond, I was such a regular, that I would usually bag my own groceries just because I wanted to and liked to do so too. And sometimes, I would even bag other people's groceries if I happened to notice that some of the baggers were busy helping out others.
-Now if I can just stop the baggers up the street at Foodtown from double-plastic-bagging every single thing they pack up. I bought a box of Kleenex that other day - and even that was double-bagged! ???

I'm not quite sure what DR Ron Pulliam was thinking when he said LOST aired on Wednesday night. Obviously, it aired on Thursday.

Russeau has been with us off and on since Season 1 so *I* definitely cared that she was killed. Carl was of less concern, but I assume the point being made is that these two were being shot - not by "The Others" and not by "The Losties" but by one of the freighter people since Alex had to identify herself to them. The freighter people are supposed to kill everyone, at least so far as we know.
But, DR Jennifer, the point of them not showing us who fired was a little thing known as a CLIFFHANGER. Remember that until a few weeks ago, there was no indication that we were going to get ANY more LOST episodes this season, so the producers worked out to have a cliffhanger at the end of 8 episodes if that was all we were going to get this season. And even though we are to get 5 more episodes, they're a month away, so this was a nice shocking question mark to leave the audience with until the return of the show.

I began my evening with another episode of NUMB3RS. Ah, me, they've introduced Kathy Najimy as Judd Hirsch's love interest. Good! Now he can concentrate on his love life and leave his sons alone to pursue theirs at their own pace.
The story had to do with toxic waste being planted under schoolyards. It was just OK.
-
I spent a large portion of the evening with the new Blu-ray release of UNBREAKABLE. Hadn't watched the movie in awhile, and I found it as measuredly poignant as I always have. It's slow and methodical, but I found the payoff to be quite wonderful when I first saw it (admiteedly, the group of teachers I went with to see it didn't like it much).
-
I watched the bonus features, the same ones that were on the Vista Edition DVD release. There was one very moving deleted scene I had forgotten about: the mother and son waiting in the hospital for the father to come out, and she's trying to get him to eat something from the vending machine, but he's in shock.
-
I spent the last 80 minutes of the evening watching, of all things, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on Blu-ray. I hadn't watched it since I got the new set and new receiver. Certainly it looks beautiful. You can tell they spent a ton of money on this.
The music (and singing) never seems to get any better.

four score and seven years ago we the people in order to form a more perfect union one two three four five six seven eight The one thing that bugged me about the last episode was that last couple minutes, and, in fact, entertainment weekly also has the same beef with the episode. it just seems really weird that no one on the freighter knew who michael/kevin was since the the four "searchers" who were recruited - and who are now on the island - were able to identify kate and jack. they all had knowledge of the people on the manifest, and even had some visual references as to who they were. so even though, "that's not your real name" was a knowing "joke" it really should not have been. and one other interesting tidbit about the code that michael entered to detonate the bomb - seven one seven seven six - corresponds to the date of the birth of the united states. thus ends my spoiler discussion for this post. you may now return to your regularly scheduled posting however dr jennifer you may want to vary the pattern of your spoiler gibberish since it looks a little too obvious at least to my eyes but then again since i don't really care about spoilers well but since other are reading rather trying not to read well.

This is an easily solved problem, Jose. Take a cloth shopping bag with you and put all your things inside it.

I'm quite sure DR Ron Pulliam was confused all to hell at that time of the day when he was replying -- fried as his brain was from the hectic week -- and was misthinking because his CBS Thursday shows were aired Wednesday night.

This is the forest primeval..by the shores of gitchee goomee down beside the deep sea water stands the wigwam of Nakomis..what the world needs now is love sweet love, that's the only thing The folks on the freighter know who is on the manifest, but not necessarily what they look like. No one knew Jack or Kate "on sight" that I recall. As for Michael, they probably have no idea whether he survived or not. If they know he did survive, then they would have had to have the survivor listing that Ben's people created for him. That's not to say, however, that the captain doesn't know who Kevin really is. We have yet to see what the captain will actually do or say as a result of Sayid's turning him in. I think that Miles saying "that's not your real name" had more to do with some of the gifts he possesses (remember his ability to talk to spirits?) than it was any indication he knew "who" Kevin really was. I think he had no clue Michael was there to be a threat, or he would have turned him in immediately. So darling have a heart. Don't let one mistake keep us apart. I'm not meant to live alone. Turn this house into a home. When I climb the stair and turn the key....oh please be there...

We went to the place with the Wurlitzer organ. They heard about it from my MIL and wanted to see it. So I got out of cooking tonight!

I'm supposed to visit Vegas in June with my mom for her 80th birthday. We have a phenomenal deal at Harrah's. (The other times I've been there, it's been the Riviera, the Rio, and Bally's. I've never noticed the carpets on previous trips, but that was before DR Laura and HHW.)
When we went for Mom's 75th birthday, in 2003, she swam every day - and was walking a lot better than she is now, but then, so was I. The other day, she asked me to hold off on buying the plane tickets to Veags until she and my dad get back from Florida in May.

They had a pizza place in Indianpolis with a huge theater organ. Lots of fun, lousy pizza.
DearReaderLaura, have you looked at your profile lately? Do you intentionally want folks to think you're 107 years old?

I take that back. I did notice that the carpets at the Bellagio felt nicer on the feet than the carpets at many other hotels. It was a pleasure to walk there, even if the search for the nickel poker machines was fruitless.

We saw the musical CRY BABY on Friday night.. I think it will be a big big hit with the people who didn't mind the "cruel" humor of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, and I prognosticate that it will run quite a while and only just barely pay back its investment. I do think the leading man has a great career ahead of him on the screen, but he didn't feel right for this dark-ish role somehow. Maybe by the time the critics see the show in a few weeks...
-
Or do I mean that I prevaricate?

I did check out the ceilings when I casino-hopped in Atlantic City last summer.

I'm watching tonight's episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" and they had a promo saying that both "Monk" and "Psych" are coming to NBC, starting April 6th. Are they going to be new episodes or repeats??

We get around the bagging problem by having the checkers doing the bagging at the same time as they check. Most of our baggers are still in high school, and only available on weekends.
Every once in a while, a customer goes to where the bagger would normally be working, and then is astounded when I start bagging. Apparently, in some areas (like New Jersey), the customers are expected to bag. I can't see it, myself - bagging is a courtesy, and we are always courteous to our customers.
Of course, there are some cutomers we know well enough to tease a bit, but that's different. ;D
I mostly go to Fred Meyer and the checkers there bag the items as they check, but I usually use the self-checkout, so I bag my purchases myself.

There is a local grocery store called MegaFoods that was the first store that I can remember where the customers could bag their own, if they wanted. They also didn't have regular baggers late in the evening.

DR SWoody,
Is one supposed to tip the person who bags the groceries? How about the person who helps take it to the car?

We will get new episodes of MONK, though, eventually. MONK was renewed for a seventh season, although it may be the last.
