Title: PASSING GAS
Post by: bk on April 23, 2008, 12:24:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were gaseous, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in the meadow passing gas at four dollars a gallon.

The people with the SUV's at the gas station are just another example of the decline of public discourse and the increasing sense of entitlement and self-centeredness in the American public.

Droppin' by to say I have not dropped off the face of the earth...

Last Friday was my father's burial and I was not able to post much.

I am in the final stages of my paper and have to meet with the prof tomorrow. I do a presentation on monday and the heavy duty writing is done. AFter monday I juast have some tweaking to do and study for my final.

I am doing a fantasy theme analysis on fanfiction. I have read some stories that have been downright PORN in nature.... There have been a couple that have left nothing to the imagination but fresh imaginings....

I am going to celebrate when this is done!

Sorry to hear about the car troubles, BK.

But at the same time - WHAT THE FRELL ARE YOU DOING, DRIVING AND PHONING AT THE SAME TIME???!!!

I'd think you'd know how many accidents driving and phoning at the same time causes!  And you almost drove off the freeway because of this call!  Twice!!!

Bad BK!  Naughty BK!

(Lordy, I sound like I'm scolding one of the dogs for some reason.)

It's cell phone time at the check-out lines again.

Yesterday, I was working with a soft-spoken customer, a very nice woman who had a few questions about her order, wondering if she was buying the right ingredients for what she was planning to cook (and she was).  We had some difficulty with our conversation, however, because another woman in my line was having a very loud conversation on her cell phone.  It was hard to hear my soft-spoken customer because of how loudly the other woman was carrying on.

How loud was she?  Well, it was very hard to hear anything over her conversation... and she was the fourth customer in the line at that point.  She was at least three yards away.

And she continued to talk that loudly all the time while I worked with customers two and three, completely oblivious to how her noisemaking was affecting the people around her.

So, of course, when she finally hung up (right about the time I finished ringing up and bagging her order), her first words to me were "Sorry about that."

No, Ma'am, you are not truly sorry about that.  You could have cut off that conversation at any point and saved us all a lot of earache.  I know because I had to listen to your half of the conversation.  It was not a conversation of any earthshattering consequence.  It was a conversation filled with drivel.  The only thing earthshattering about the conversation was your voice being turned up to eleven.  You could easily have waited to have your conversation.  While driving, perhaps.

I just kicked up my Danny Meyer hospitality a couple of extra notches and smiled and told her how much money she owed.

And, boy, did the next customer in line have a few things to say about her once she left!

A QUESTION FOR BK and anyone else interested:

We all have had songs or melodies that have stuck in our brains and played themselves, unbidden and repeatedly.  There's probably a word for this phenomenon, but I don't know what it could be.  (Where's a reverse dictionary when you need one?)

Lately, I've had Samuel Barber's Overture for The School for Scandal running on my personal background track.  It's been quite pleasant.  (Although I don't know what Mr. Barber would have thought about one of his best compositions being turned into mental muzak.)

So, question:  Are there any songs/melodies that frequently frequent your mind?

I will go one better. Some one will say something and that will cue a song and then song is stuck with me for a while.

So if someone says for example: "How are things?" It might cue "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?"

Good morning, all! Will this Ellington ever end? Unfortunately, that's how I also feel when I hear an Ellington piece, but the difficulties of this assignment have really pissed me off since I'm basically cleaning up the road kill left by several other people:
   1.  The NYCGMC Board of Directors for their musival insensitivity in determining a big band concert didn't need a big band
   2.  The original arranger of these charts who, while paid a goodly amount by two different men's choruses to write an evening's concert, never once considered the need for a piano rehearsal score that might fill out missing instruments

I don't like trning in second-rate material, and I certain the work I'm doing is lower than that. As a result, I'm very dissatisfied.

And I slept badly last night: a strange dream involving me and Anne Kaufman Schneider taking a train to Cincinnati to see a show; I believe the Macbeths were in it, a dream about being in a war and unfriendly fire but I also believe the abandoned house we were hiding in was my Aunt Dorothy's. There was a third I've now forgotten.

And I'm crabby today.

We had tilapia for dinner. I baked it after putting melted butter, lemon juice, oregano, parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme (yes) on the fish. It was very good and very easy to prepare. We had the wild rice and peas. I was going to do the green beans but Anthony decided we should have peas, so peas it was.

I've just has some leftover spaghetti (just the pasta, reheated with a bit of butter and freshly grated parm), and am contemplating heading back to the bedroom environment, to remind Fletcher that it really is my bed and that he is required to share, which means move over.

Tonight I'll get off late at work, at ten, so I think getting a bit more sleep is a good idea.

Have fun, everyone.

Has it been that long since you've rotated, balanced, and/or replaced your tires?  *And if I'm remembering correctly, I believe Infiniti offers routine maintenance check-ups at a very reasonable rate for Infiniti owners.  Maybe something to add to your iCalendar.  ???

So, question:  Are there any songs/melodies that frequently frequent your mind?

Thankfully, I've never really had that "problem".  I think the amount of music I play through and listen to on a daily, weekly basis sort of prevents me from having any one particular tune stuck in my head at one point and time.  I see it as a sort of self-defense/self-preservation mechanism... -If I had "Gimme, Gimme" and "Shiksa Goddess" constantly running through my head... OY!  If I do find myself humming something, it's usually something random and non-specific.

Ooooouch! The reviews posted so far for Trevor Nunn's 3hr and 40 minute musicalization of GONE WITH THE WIND have been painful.  Another stupid idea actually given a production, when I can think of countless more deservng things I've seen by friends and others that cannot get a major hearing. I've only seen three Trevor Nunn things I liked - NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and the film of TWELFTH NIGHT - and i've never thought his staging of musicals very good. Still he gets hired.

Since I have nothing to watch on TV "live" until 10 p.m., I should be able to make a huge push to finish the Indy Jones set today. I'm not going out to lunch and should have no reason to leave the house, so I should be able to get the remaining "movie" and the remaining documentaries all watched.

Wonderful episode of "Law and Order: SVU" last night.  Well, not wonderful in the warm, fuzzy sense.  But it was a good story with a sensitive guest performance by Casper Van DienBailey Chase as a professional football superstar accused of murdering his gay lover.  (I wasn't too thrilled with the red herring...I suspected the killer earlier on but the writers veered off the development of that arc and then returned to it  -- PLOP -- to tie things up).

I don't think that was Casper van Dien. Was it? I thought it was the guy from that dreadful TNT series SAVING GRACE.

DR Ron Pulliam, do you ever go to the 42nd Street Moon performances? I don't recall your ever mentioning them and I see that Andrea Marcovicci is doing COCO with them.

The Ellingtons are finished except for the eaqy one I need to talk to the MD about before I do it.

And, DR Jose, the invoice is in the mail!

I can answer this one also.  I have been to a few performances and I know several people who do their shows.  It's hit and miss, the two I've seen were fun.  I like the format and the performances are usually top notch.

You had said that you thought lynnette's cancer might be returning because of a sarcastic comment she made when tom said her hair was coming back nicely.
Being a woman i totally get what she meant. And i really don't think it had anything to do with her cancer returning. Her hair was coming back so slowly and it was quite unattactive. So her saying, "yeah it's coming back" sarcasticly made perfect sense to me.

I don't think that was Casper van Dien. Was it? I thought it was the guy from that dreadful TNT series SAVING GRACE.
Crap!  You're right!  It's Bailey Chase.

FYI:  Bailey Chase was a supporting character in the last few seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as a member of her boyfriend Riley's special unit.

(He reminds me of Van Dien....hence the supposition that it was him).

Reportedly overheard lyrics from Trevor Nunn’s staged Gone With the Wind, just opened in London:

"I'm the queen of the county
The belle of the ball
But like Humpty Dumpty
I had a great fall,"

chirrups Scarlett, and one fervently wishes she hadn't.

"If we close our hearts to hatred
And we open them to love
Hope will follow
On the wings of a dove".

“From Kerry to Connemara
You won’t find land as fine as Tara?”

“The life I used to know
The world I knew so well-
Why did it have to turn
Into a living hell?”

With all that room it is odd they are getting in and not back out again.  I would also be freaked, having an invasion of mice was bad enough-large rats-yuck.  Funny I don't mind the live rats I occasionally see along the creek.  I find them entertaining, but then they are where they belong, which is not in my house.

My guess is they like it because it's dry and probably a bit warmer than outside.  The guy (who was great, really funny, which I appreciated) gave me a quote on attaching galvanized steel screen under the stepback which he said would take care of it, so we may bite the bullet and do that.

I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel (an Andrew Lloyd Webber reference). I did manage to finish the documentaries connected to the "Broadway" Indy adventure.

The one I had started last night but didn't finish was on Tin Pan Alley and how it pretty much dried up after 50 years as those sheet music publishers didn't allign themselves with either radio or movie studios and thus lost out.

The last of the documentaries was on Broadway of the 1920s which included Cohan, the Follies and Scandals, SHUFFLE ALONG, and SHOW BOAT. It was only 29 minutes, so naturally it wasn't all inclusive, but a nice little primer for those without much knowledge.

Next, I watched the last of the Indy adventures called "Hollywood Follies." The two part show involved Indy tangling with Eric von Stroheim on the set of FOOLISH WIVES and then making a western with John Ford.

Anachronisms abounded in this episode. It's supposed to be 1920, but we first see Indy in a movie theater watching the silent BEN-HUR which wasn't going to be produced for another five years. Oy!

With my favorite recent business name, Affordable Wildlife Solutions, on the way here, I am hoping my rodent problem will soon be gone.  This thing has the longest tail I have ever seen.  It totally freaked me out.  I'm OK with mice, even possums (this may be a possum), but this thing just is too big for me to want to pick up.

Why are you depriving your youngsters of what they would probably consider a Grand Adventure? I mean, just because Dad's a squeemish wuss... :D

Miss Charlotte and I are off to the movies to see MISS PETTIGREW LiVES FOR A DAY at 6:30. Yay!

I spoke on the phone to my dear friend, the talented Jose Simbulan, I had a great meeting with the Men's Chorus director and turned over the completed charts, I've read today's mail, and now I'm ready to see my beloved goddaughter.

It's been a good day today.

I am sleepy, however, so maybe I'll chill out for 45 minutes.

These were huge, probably diseased, rats, to begin with.  I mean the tails alone were probably over 18 inches long.  I have never seen anything like it.  Second of all, Gabe especially does not like scary stuff.  Zach would probably be fine with it, but Gabe would have had nightmares for weeks if he had seen them.

My daily pedantic rant:

RULE: Never round off calculations until the final result is obtained!

The big "Political Pundit" issue on the PA Primary was whether or not Hilary could core a double digit victory.

The news cast were trumpeting her success based on the 55% to 45% (10%=double digits) results-

the screen showed:
Clinton - 1,258,245 votes (55%)
Obama - 1,042,297 votes (45%)

And since 55-45=10 (double digits), Clinton WON the PA race!

Well, if you do the math correctly, you have
1,258,245 plus 1,042,297 equals 2,300,542 votes;

Clinton votes as a percentage of the total = 54.6934% (prematurely rounded to 55%)

Obama votes as a percentage of the total =45.3066% (prematurely rounded to 45%)

The Clinton percentage edge is therefore 9.3868% - which is properly rounded to 9%

So, in fact, using the double-digit standard, Clinton LOST the PA race!

LESSON: Premature rounding creates cumulative error that can dramatically affect the outcome of your calculations!

Here endeth the lesson.

  2.  The original arranger of these charts who, while paid a goodly amount by two different men's choruses to write an evening's concert, never once considered the need for a piano rehearsal score that might fill out missing instruments

But was he contracted to provide such a score?

I ask becasue my government dealings often involved the government refusing to contract for what we deemed "necessary items"; so, often the company gave them just what they paid for.

I, in fact, caused a huge ruckus when I refused to bid a contract per government direction - I told the Big G, you don't buy what I think is essential to your sucess in using our product, I will not sell you the product!

My management's position was to go ahead and put in the lower bid and then when the government found themselves up the inevitable creek, put in a proitable change order.

My position was that such scenarios are what give Aerospace companies the reputation of always over-running contracts.

After much yelling and screaming on both sides, I won!
The ultimate result was that when I proposed it as necessary, the Government bought it; and when the government contracted with me, I never over ran!

My guess is they like it because it's dry and probably a bit warmer than outside.  The guy (who was great, really funny, which I appreciated) gave me a quote on attaching galvanized steel screen under the stepback which he said would take care of it, so we may bite the bullet and do that.

Makes sense, the odd part is why they are using the area as sacred ground for dying.

Good luck the steel screen solves the problem, might save you money in the long run.

http://www.kashrut.com/Passover/matzoh/

"Another type of Matzoh is called Egg Matzoh (matzah ashirah). It is produced from Passover Matzoh flour, but uses eggs or fruit juice instead of water. In theory such Matzoh cannot become Chometz, since it does not contain regular water. It does, however, pose to significant issues. First, although it may be permitted to be eaten, it may definitely not be used to fulfill the Mitzvah of eating Matzoh at the Seder, since it is not lechem oni (Bread of Affliction) and by nature cannot become Chometz. Second, the Remah rules that since contamination of the fruit juice with even a slight amount of water could cause the dough to become Chometz immediately, the custom is to refrain from eating such Matzoh on Pesach at all, except by children or the infirm."

Well, they found him guilty.  I'm ok with it.  I did everything I could and can't really think of anything I would have done differently.   A man walks into an apartment with a gun. The person in the apartment id's him. He's still at the scene and only a few feet away from the gun.   I think keeping them out for 3 1/2 hours was pretty good.

I admit, I had to go to YouTube & listen to I GO CRAZY to place him and the song.

Very Sad.

I think Paul Davis would only be known here for his successful revival of the Jarmels' song "A Little Bit Of Soap".  He came close to losing his life in 1986 - a shooting incident in Nashville.

Last night, I couldn't get into my work e-mail to check it before I left.  This morning, there were a couple of messages on our Intranet:

Quote
Email is down, 4-23-08, 7:55a.m. - Email has been down since 5pm Tues. night. Computer Services worked on it all night and is still working on it. Thanks for your patience.

and:

Quote
Email Update: [11:55am, 4/23/08] : Due to a major hardware failure that corrupted the email database yesterday evening, Computer Services staff continue with repair procedures to reconstruct the email system. Based on how long these procedures have already taken, it could take as long as Thursday afternoon to have email completely restored.

It's been weird today with no e-mail.  Not that I get very much for work, but still...it's just been weird.  I just hope that nothing that I've been saving (or that anyone has saved) has been lost. :-\

So...

Since it was warm outside today, and since I was playing an audition at the casting office, I went ahead and dressed down: shorts, t-shirt, light jacket.  Normally, we just do "pre-screens" at the office, so it's a very informal process and setting, well...

Due to a slight stall on the A-line this morning, I did not step foot into the casting office until right at 11:30.  And upon stepping into the small studio, I was "greeted" by the musical director/conductor, the book writer, the lyricist, the composer, the director (who happened to be Richard Maltby, Jr.!), two (well-known) producers, the lead casting director and the casting associate.  -Good Morning, To Me!  Well...

"The guys coming in today will be singing two songs from the show.  Why don't we go over them with you."

Of course, I was not sent the music in advance, neither was I advised to come in a couple of minutes early to go over the (new) music.  I sit down at the piano, look at the music, the composer comes over to sing along, I start playing...

"That's great!" says the composer.
"Were you really just reading that for the first time?" asks the director.
The lead producer - whom I've worked for before - gives me a knowing wink and a smile - then says, "Hey, I think we've found our pit pianist!"

Whew!

And then came the veritable parade of Broadway actors/stars.  They all started off with their own selections, then read two scenes, then sang the two songs (which I was still basically sight-reading).  I did end up playing the up-tempo song a bit fast for the first actor, but, all in all, I had a very good audition session.  And playing for those amazing actors with their amazing voices was a true joy!

Best of all, I get to do it all again tomorrow.

*And, you can bet that I'm going to keep the producer to his 'word' about me in the pit!  ;D

I can't say that i was happy with who went home (carly). But I was really happy that brooke was not in the b2. I don't think she is the best singer. But i just find her so endearing. I was disappointed that 2 people who got good reviews (syesha and carly) were B2. And very very disappointed that long haired boy who stunk up the night last night, was not in B2. Does he really have that many fans? I have found him good at times (not really lately). but last night i just really really hated everything about the performance. Maybe if he had acted like he knew what he was talking about, it might not have made it as bad for me.
I actually wanted syesha to go tonight (since i like her less). Although now i think the 2 davids are F2 for sure.

Then I headed over to Fifth Avenue to get an eye examination and to start picking out a new set of frames, well...

I got there at my appointed time: 4:30.  The guy at the desk said there was someone else in front of me.  -OK, I can wait a few minutes.  Well... There was a woman who was sitting on the "waiting bench", and she kept looking toward the exam room, and muttering, "What's taking him so long?"  It was her husband getting his eyes examined.  Well... About half an hour later, the husband and the doctor came out of the room, the doctor talked to the wife, and then.... The wife walked into the examination room.  Well... By that point, I was getting a bit frustrated trying to find a "right" pair of frames, and I really did not want to wait any more for my eye exam, so I asked to reschedule for tomorrow... Then headed across the street to another eyeglass shop to browse. ;)

I did watch the IDOL results as well. Not the one I thought would go home, but since I didn't think this person would win anyway, might as well be this week as any other. But there were at least two other singers who deserved more to go home tonight .

*And, you can bet that I'm going to keep the producer to his 'word' about me in the pit!  ;D

Wonderful news, Jose!!

~~~Vibes for the Potential New Gig!!~~~
ASK BK DAY
What was your favorite food as a child, that you would never consider eating now?
And what food did you hate as a child, but now eat on a regular basis?
I can't think of a favorite food that I loved then that I wouldn't love now.  Maybe brussel sprouts for the hated food that I now eat whenever it's put in front of me.
We ran into the Lakers game traffic on the way home so I had to get off the freeway and do surface streets - just what I wanted to do after a very long day.  And now I have ten minutes to write the notes, and then I have an hour's worth of notes for the cast and crew.  An interesting run-through tonight.
