Title: FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP
Post by: bk on May 17, 2008, 12:18:02 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes seemed like five hours, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're, like the shop, currently around the corner.

I think I will have to re-watch Nudie before I can contribute to the TOD.

I was watching the Jose Slide Show.....I think 085 and 098 are my choices, although the avatar photo is also nice, that may be one of those....

The ones with the tilted backgrounds make me dizzy and the ones with your arm reaching out of frame give one pause....but as you say....no cropping has been done yet.  All very nice!

I have no TOD list yet, I shall wait to see some others.  Are we casting the reading or the stage production?

All is not lost today:

Venus is pulling away from its discordant link to Chiron by approaching favorable ties with Uranus and Jupiter. Therefore, love vibrations are increasing in frequency as you near the midnight hour. Be more generous with hugs and kisses.

Good morning, all! I have a morning with Brain surgery and then I'm seeing a matinee of Mr Tennessee Williams' ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE with the wonderful Milla.

DR Jose, I think this is my vote. The photos are quite lovely but I think this is a nice serious professional mug shot. I can't wait to see it hanging in my local post office.

Casting For Nudie Musical

Harry-Raúl Esparza or Brent Barrett
Rosie--Susan Egan or Rachel York
George-Jason Graae or Danny Burstein
Susie-Kerry Butler or Kelli O'Hara
John-Roger Bart or Christopher Sieber
Eunice-Fantasia or Marissa Jane Winouker
Mary La Rue*
Eddie-Gregory Jbara
Juanita-Emily Skinner or Alice Ripley

*This might be harder to cast with a well known person if there is full frontal like there was in the movie
Title: Re:FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP

TOD: I might consider walk-ons, by ensemble members of course, of various "known" adult film industry personas of the period; i.e. Georgina Spelvin, Linda Lovelace, Harry Reems, John Leslie, Jamie Gillis (a SUNSET BLVD in joke could be thought up).

TFNM = Teenage Freakin' Nudie Mutants!
Title: Re:FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP
Post by: S. Woody White on May 17, 2008, 06:34:10 AM
And I don't have any idea when I'll have the time to re-watch TFNM, thanks to my freaked-out work schedule.

Yesterday, my sole day off this week, der B came into my room while I was napping, said something about Stacey (my cashiering boss) and overtime, and I just rolled over and Fletcher cuddled closer.  Dalmatians are good for that.

A little later, der B came back into the room and asked, quite a bit louder, "Didn't you hear me?  They're calling you in to work today!"

Huh?  It's my day off!  What the...

So I called the store, and they did indeed need me to get my sorry backside in to work.  Business is picking up, someone decided they didn't need the job after all, and even though it means paying me overtime they wanted me in for another day at the registers.

Seven days a week at the job.  Sheesh.

And it's going to be more of the same next week.  Stacey has me scheduled to work a register on both Sunday and Saturday.  Meanwhile, my training as billing clerk continues Monday through Friday, and even if I manage to get my billing training finished on Thursday, what with it being Memorial Day Weekend, I can pretty well bet that Stacey will need me on Friday.  So, that's another seven-day week.

Der Brucer is estatic about all the time I'm getting in at the store.  That's either because it brings in a better paycheck, or he's got someone showing up here at the house while I'm away.  I seriously doubt it's the latter.  (Sorry, der B.   ::))

In any case, it's time for me to head to the store yet again.  No rest for the weary.

Maybe I'll get a chance to look at Jose's pics later.

I have a question for all DRs re: reading newsgroups

Does anybody know of any free newsreaders, other than google.

My internet provider had a great way to read newsgroups. But this week they decided they no longer will provide it.

And it's driving me crazy. The only group i read is my cbs soaps group. But i hate hate how it looks on google. I like to see each post one by one with the newest post on the top (maybe there is a way to configure google to do this?

Anyhow if anybody knows of any ideas, thanks in advance.

Don't even get me started on mowing.  Our rechargeable electric mower started smoking a few weeks ago (I tried a nicotine patch, it didn't work), and I knew that some previous models had been recalled due to catching fire, so I took it into the shop.  Luckily it was still under warranty and Black & Decker, to their credit, opted to replace pretty much everything save the chassis, upgrading me to the newest 2008 model.  But in the meantime our close-to-an-acre backyard grass has grown to gargantuan proportions.  I have already done three mowing "sessions" and am probably only about 1/4 way done.  Oy.

Bosco and I took our walk and were accosted by a runaway Pit Bull...thankfully he was not of the "rip your flesh apart" variety, although he would not let us be and he followed us home.

I put Bosco in the back yard grabbed a leash and eventually got the beast hooked up. There was a tag which gave his address so I walked him home (home was just a few streets west of my street.

On the way I met up with his owner who were driving around the area looking for "Bogart."

Re Nudie - yes, it's kept in its original time period (too different a world today) and takes place in 1975.

The one cast list (from Michael Shayne) is excellent and would have worked ten years ago, and maybe would work now on a beeeeg stage, but some of those people are a bit old for their roles now.  There is one name on the list, however, that is my first choice for both reading and show.  Which is it?
Title: Re:FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP
Post by: bk on May 17, 2008, 11:15:55 AM
And we can either be casting the reading or the show.  And I've removed the nudity for Mary La Rue, knowing it would be difficult to get someone to do it.  Again, my first choice for that role is a bit too old for it, although I'd still consider it - Michele Pawk.

Jose, I really like the new avatar.  And you take nice pictures.

Thanks, DR George et al.

The last time I had pics taken was at least 15 years ago... Hmm.. maybe even 20! -And Chris took them then too.  He was living in Boston at the time, and I drove up for a visit and a photo shoot.  -Oh, and he also took some nice portraits of me and Steve too.  :)

It really is hard to have your pic be taken.  Well, to be natural and relaxed while you're having your picture taken.  And just like you see on shows like "America's Next Top Model", sometimes you have to put your body in a sort of unnatural pose in order to get a natural shot.  I had to do a lot of neck craning and shoulder adjusting.  And even though we were concentrating on my face, I really had to keep track of the rest of my body.  I also started off in my usual giggly and/or too serious mode since a friend was taking pics.  I have a feeling if the photographer was someone I didn't know well, I might have had settled in faster.  Or maybe not.  ???

Thanks Ginny.  It looks like something my book group would enjoy reading.

Here are some I'm considering for my group:

The Secret of Lost Things, by Sheridan Hay
Flower Confidential, by Amy Stewart
Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, by Barbara Kingsolver
Julie and Julia, by Julie Powell

These are our selections for the summer:

June - My Home is Far Away, by Dawn Powell
July - The Trees, by Conrad Richter
August - The House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton (we'll have a potluck dinner and watch the Gillian Anderson movie version)

For September, we usually try to read a book that ties into our local international festival, which this year is featuring Mongolia.  Any suggestions?

Did anyone watch THE JETSON’S?  Do you remember when the phone rang & Jane Jetson put “her face” on before answering?  I need one of those.  I answered Skype & should have turned off the video.  Bryan is staying with friends now and called for my mother’s Danish Apple pie recipe since his copy is packed.  He was too nice to comment on my appearance  until his friend behind him began giggling.

If I hadn’t had wet nail polish on I would have removed the white turban off my head.  The turban is not a terrible fashion statement, it is a microfiber towel to remove the excess water out of my hair and keep it from dripping all over me.  Can you guess, I just washed my hair.

DR Singdaw, I believe I have.  One sec and I will post it.  It won't include the cheese bottom crust I use, any crust can do.  I find the pie is so juicy it tends to leak through any crust so the cheese makes it extra sturdy.  I don't each the bottom crust-lol, just use it to hold the pie.
Title: Re:FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP

DANISH APPLE PIE

FILLING:

16 apples sliced (we like them thin)
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Adjust sugar & cinnamon depending if apples are sweet or tart
Mix, stir and toss until apples become juicy

Fill a 9 or 10 inch pie crust and pour the remaining juice around the top of the apples

TOPPING:
Double for more topping

1½ cup flour
1¼ cup grated medium or sharp cheddar cheese
¾ cup sugar
¾ cup Fleishman’s margarine from frig or freezer-cut into little pieces
(if using butter it can be too heavy-try using less)
Crumble well with finger tips until very crumbled.
Place on top of apples
Pat the topping down over the apple filling
Make the topping extra thick around the edges of the pie crust

Bake in 350 degree oven 40 minutes or more
The longer the pie bakes the softer the apples, but don’t burn the topping

I'm back from venturing through the West Village for a few hours with my friend, Michael.  With the weather taking a turn for the better this afternoon, it seemed that everyone was out and about, and eating brunch outside wherever there was a free table.

We opted to eat inside at The Pink Tea Cup.  I had the catfish and Michael had the fried chicken.  YUM!

While walking around, we also stopped into Sweet Heart Coffee on 8th Ave., right at the top of the West Village.  It's basically a hole-in-the-wall place, but they feature a good assortment of Argentinian empanadas (the goat cheese and pumpkin is a favorite), as well as an assortment of baked goods and other treats.  The portions are huge, and the prices are extremely reasonable: you can get two empanadas and a freshly brewed cup of coffee for $5.00.  -Or a "Drop Dead Delicious" Cookie (chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, peanut butter chips and crumble Oreos in a 6-inch cookie!), a generously filled alfajor, and a frosted short bread cookie all for just $4.00.  ;)

That shouldn't be any problem, Dakota.  The only problem might be is if the new TV has a much larger screen size than your original, the picture quality of the tape (after you record it) probably won't look as good because it's stretched out more than before.

I've been at the office all day today organizing and making lists of everything I have to do on my current cases.  I need to be very organized because on Friday eve I was retained to represent a young man on a First Degree Murder charge.  SO that means lots and lots and lots of work ahead.  I'm looking forward to it.

One of my guests today at Borders offered me his websites to peruse, as we were discussing hummingbirds the other day here on HHW, I thought this might just be a propos:
http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/phaedrus64/Hummingbirds.html (http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/phaedrus64/Hummingbirds.html)

On his kayaking page, Rob has many links to hummingbird sites, as well as to his own:
http://www.geocities.com/robprotz/ (http://www.geocities.com/robprotz/)
Scroll down quite a bit.

Personally, I really like his links to West Virginia's New River Gorge. . . .

I won't say that it was my favorite Ghost Whisperer finale (that is reserved for the plane crash in season 1). But i did really like last night's show.  And i am so confused about the ending (Prof payne and his comment about 5 shadows???). What was that about.
I thought the reveal about melinda's father was interesting. And her mom's story was crazy. But i am still a bit confused. Her "father" has been haunting her for a while. And what about all that stuff from last year's season finale with her "brother" gabriel. Now i'm really confused. Is he her brother? And what was up with all that stuff about trying to get her to the dark side (last year). That part confuses me with their new twist.

TCB - Hope you're not laid up, mostly for your health's sake, but selfishly (much less importantly of course) because I'm hoping you, George and I will still be able to have lunch on Thursday.

P.S. to George and TCB - If anything changes on Wednesday or after re our plans, though, please please please (that's three pleases) whatever you do or don't do, do not let me know via email or this board - my computer access will be extremely limited from Wednesday on, and I'm not relying on making peace with my Blackberry before I travel.  I'll send you both my cell number.  Please leave a message there as soon as you know.

Here are some factoids on some of the artists:

Marcos and his brother Paul Sergio Valle are often termed the Gershwins of the bossa nova, being siblings and all, with Marcos writing the music and P.S. handling lyrics.  You probably know their best-known song, "Summer Samba" (made famous by Brasilian organist Walter Wanderley) by heart.

Miucha is the second wife of Joao Gilberto, one of the founders of the Bossa Nova, and also the mother of current Bossa Nova superstar Bebel Gilberto.  Miucha's brother is Chico Buarque, best known for "A Banda," which was a hit for Herb Alpert (though you should listen to the original Brasilian vocal version by Quarteto em Cy).

Bena Lobo is Edu Lobo's son.  Edu is probably my favorite of the post-Jobim composers, and has so many gorgeous songs to his credit it's impossible to list just a few.  Tomovoz of course will know that Edu was one of the most-covered Brasilian composers by Brasil '66.

Carlos Lyra was also one of the founders of the Bossa Nova (though he usually takes a back seat to Gilberto and Jobim), whom younger fans will recognize for his work with Santana.

Joyce is a beautiful singer/songwriter with one of the clearest voices (reminiscent of Gal Costa's at times) I've ever heard.  She is kind of like a Brasilian Joni Mitchell.

Wanda Sa was Sergio Mendes' original vocalist with Brasil '65.  At that time she was married to Edu Lobo (Bena is her son, as well).  I believe MBarnum loves Wanda's "Vagamente" album, but maybe I'm making that up.  She still performs regularly in Rio with Roberto Menescal.

Joao Donato is simply one of the greatest pianist/composers ever from Brasil.  Fans of Brasil '66 will know Joao's great song "The Frog," written with Caetano Veloso.  Joao toured with Sergio's other band Bossa Rio in the late 60s and early 70s.

Ivan Lins is without a doubt the most sophisticated songwriter to come out of Brasil over the past quarter century.  His brilliant use of altered dominant seventh structures is amazing to see and hear.  His sultry song "The Island" has become a modern classic, though everything he writes is magnificent.

I've had a wonderful day but I'm quite tired now.  Today I finished the adjustments in the masters for the rental vocal score for "The Brain from Planet X" and started the band parts. Then I met Milla for the matinee of Tennessee WQilliams' ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE, which had a wonderful cast except for its leading lady who seemed as much a genteel southern lady of 1911 as I resemble Cary Grant. The production was smoothly directed and well performed, but I don't think the director was correct un he choices abut the play's intentions or its lead.

After that, Milla and I stayed for a play discussion with director, cast, and the editor of a new volume of unpublished-till-now Williams plays. We then bussed uptown for dinner at Good Enough To Eat, and I'm happy to report the excellent strawberry shortcake is in stock for the summer.

Now to read today's mail.

I have just been reading the televisionwithoutpity comments on last night's show (also i had not read DR Elmore's post when i posted before). I did not know that Jay Mohr had a pilot that was picked up. This makes me sad for 2 reasons. One i think that he and melinda have just finally clicked recently. But two, i am hoping that he is not dead.  When he said "why are there only 5 shadows (with 6 people) i was left confused. I think knowing that he might be leaving the show would make people assume he was dead. But not knowing that it did not occur to me at all since they already did something very similar in season 1.  I really hope that he is not dead. Maybe it is just foreshadowing. Or maybe one of the others are dead???  I really hope prof payne can at least be on the show sometimes. But i think that he has really added something to the show and i wonder what the show will do without him there full time (whether he is dead or not). fuadf udoai fuoifudoipasufo

An OK evening of viewing. I began with VANAJA. A coming of age story with an Indian teenager. The plot was very familiar, but the culture that surrounded the story, the thing the director said in his introduction that he wanted to catalog, was certainly present in spades and that helped maintain my interest.

And the child's dancing was quite impressive knowing that she had no training as a dancer before being cast in the film.

(I also thought about DR MBarnum during the shower scene when we got generous glimpses of Karan Singh's complete torso from the back.

The disc had many more bonus features than I was expecting. In addition to an introduction of the film by the director, there was a nice interview with the teenaged star of the movie. There were also the complete dances which had of necessity been abridged in the movie, and four student films (shot of video) by the director. Also the trailer.

My evening of viewing began and ended with COPS, where many people doing bad things were apprehended.

Then, I went back to THE INVADERS. The first one featured Jack Lord and Diana Hyland as guest stars.

The second had the aliens being able to control locust attacks on a small Kansas town. Jeanette Nolan was one of the guest stars.

And the third had William Windom and Andrew Duggan as guest stars, playing military men involved in nuclear testing that was a cover for the aliens wanting to cause an explosion powerful enough to tip the Earth off its axis.

So, I've now finished 8 out of 17 INVADERS episodes in this set. On to disc 3 tomorrow. One of those episodes has a commentary by the creator of the series, and I'm looking forward to hearing that.

Going to log off now to do some writing. I'll likely not be back this evening.

Good night!

More lilacs. They have a heavy scent that reminds me a little of the orange blossoms in bloom in Phoenix

They grow on big bushes. They come in white, lavender, purple and all shades in between

I shall probably take a second look at my Netflix disc for the weekend, YUVA, which I'm sure that DR MBarnum would like as much as I did:

I have heard of this film but had no idea what the plot was...glad to know it is a good one and it is not on my list!

But thank you. Now comes the time of year we tolerate. Most of us really enjoyed the spring this year.

I just learned I will not get my rebate direct deposited because I went through Turbotax and had the fees deducted from my refund.  So, because the last 2 digits of my SS are in the high 90s I get to wait until July.  Hmm, I was really hoping to get it now, I've already spent it twice!

Oh! and one of our leading men plays quite a reprehensible character. . .there's a darkness to the film that I really liked. . .as well as the three leading players.

I should have been home at eleven-thirty, not ten after twelve.  I shall now write Ye Olde Notes.
