Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hot, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - like me, they're hot and bothered.

I am not sure that I have have seen any of the series that BK mentioned with the exception of some Charlie Chan films (and I couldn' tell you which ones) maybe one or two of the Francis the Talking Mule films. (The ones with Donald O'Connor).

But does the British film series Carry On....  count? If so I have seen a whole slew of them.

Good morning, all! I have little to report. Today is the schedule I had planned for yesterday: Toyland, a bit of Brain surgery, a trip to the 42nd Street NYPL, and the post office. Tonight I'm seeing SOUTH PACIFIC, and I'm quite excited about it.

I also need to finish plans for tomorrow's flight, which has not been something I'm anticipating with any delight.  We'll see.

TOD:
the Hildegarde Withers mysteries with the late great Edna May Oliver
when I was a kid, I loved the Ma & Pa Kettle series, but I think they're funnier and bawdier in the original source, Betty MacDonald's book THE EGG AND I

Last night we went to a reading of a musical about the wonderful Sophie Tucker. Playing the part of Sophie was the equally wonderful Mary Stout. She's quite good. She has the physical characteristics of Miss Tucker and she sounds very good as well. I don't know if this show will be done in New York. It would be, in my opinion, a hard sell based on what plays and what is successful right now. I think much of the Broadway going audience may have heard of Sophie Tucker but I also think another large portion of that audience wouldn't know ST from any other early star. Oh, well. We shall see. Good Luck to Sophie (not the Steve Allen incarnation from the 1960s).

I'd rather leave the Ma & Pa Kettle stories and the Francis movies back in my childhood.  I have recently watched four of the Carry On movies - and I still find them amusing - I think more so now because of the predictable lines etc.

Europe's biggest event (other than world cup and European cup football) takes place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  I would bet it gets no publicity in North America!

EUROVISION song festival time.  This year in Belgrade.

This is the contest that gave us Love is Blue, Volare, Waterloo, Al Di La.
It was also responsible for unleashing Riverdance!

Oft (too oft!) recorded "You Raise Me Up" was written and recorded by Eurovision winners "Secret Garden".

And for the Theatre trivia buffs, Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Frances Ruffelle and Tommy Korberg have all represented their countries in the contest.

Celine Dion, Olivia N J, Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias and Nana Mouskouri have also represented their countries.

The contest has been going for over 50 years now. This year there are 43 countries competing!  All countries entering need to be members of the European Broadcasting Union.  Israel and Turkey are thus eligible. Morocco is also eligible but has yet to enter.  San Marino has entered for the first time this year.

That is your lesson for today.

Yes, Virginia, there was a time before television, when if you wanted to watch your favorite series you gathered with a bunch of friends and strangers and watched it on a large screen in a movie theater.

For some reason, I never really caught on to any of the pre-television series of films.  I know they were frequently shown on television, back in the early days, but I don't remember seeing them.

I remember Abbott and Costello movies.  But those weren't really a series, where the characters continued from story to story, they were just a whole slew of 'em.  Not the same thing.

What I do remember is the family gathering around the coffee table, which was laden with cheeses and crackers, and munching while we watched old horror movies and episodes of The Avengers (with Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel).  But that's, again, not the same thing.

I smell a slice of gouda, I think of Diana Rigg dressed in leather.  Kinky, what?

I have had a busy morning. I had my semi-annual dental check-up and cleaning. Then, I came home and did some cleaning of my own - the living room is on tap for Tuesday. Then, I did my usual morning workout.

Only needling thing about the morning was that I lost my DSL connection for about 10 minutes. I saw the telephone linesmen aacross the street so I wasn't surprised when service went out for awhile. I'm glad it wasn't any longer.

Second question from DR MattH re: why i dislike spoilers and if knowing what i knew about DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES spoiled it for me.

Maybe this will explain things.

I am a soap opera fan. I used to read the soap opera magazines and read the spoiler threads in my soap newsgroup.

But i found the show was not as interesting to me anymore, because i knew every single thing that was going to happen. There were no surprises.

You know how when we watch MEDIUM it is interesting to see how the story will unfold. Well to me i realized that is a lot of the enjoyment.

I stopped reading the spoiler stuff for the soaps (and i used to read them for other shows too). And i just found that i enjoyed the show more because i didn't always know what was going to happen.

I love that for LOST we have those big reveals that i am unaware of. That is one of the things i enjoy most.

So to answer your question, I would have rather not known about the cliffhanger for DH. Because then i would have truly been shocked. And yes it makes a difference to me.

Today I'll be on a mission with John Rambo in Stallone retooled RAMBO. The reception for this wasn't quite as strong for his retooled ROCKY BALBOA, and the basic character had devolved so greatly from FIRST BLOOD to RAMBO III that he was cartoonish even though Stallone was playing it perfectly straight as a serious drama (which FIRST BLOOD was).

I just hope all the killings aren't too graphic. It's only 90 minutes, so that will help.

Oh did anybody else watch last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS?

I loved it.

They changed things up. They made them all do the same style of dance. At the same time. It was fabulous. They each did their parts and then they all danced together.

I thought Kristi was so good. It is about time a woman wins this! I love her. ANd think she will win easily.

I have never liked cristian. But i thought he was very good. If not for his injury i think his free style could have been great (he could not do any lifts with his bad arm which really damaged that dance).

It would not surprise me if jason comes in third. He was not very good last night. His lifts were great. And impressive. But everything else paled in comparison.

I am so happy for kristi. She totally deserves to win this!

Those damned Broadway copy cats!  My friend Richard just sent me this:

May 20, 2008
Arts, Briefly

Katie Holmes Is Broadway Bound
Compiled by LAWRENCE VAN GELDER

Katie Holmes is about to make her Broadway debut.

She will star next fall with John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson in a revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” directed by Simon McBurney, artistic director of the British theater company Complicite. The play, from 1947, deals with a successful businessman who knowingly sold defective airplane parts to the government during World War II. The truth and its tragic consequences emerge when his son wants to propose to the daughter of his business partner.

The theater and opening dates have not yet been announced.

Oh well i did my best to explain.

If you still don't get it, then you don't get it. :)

Well, here's what I don't get. No specific information about the women was revealed. By telling us they were going to jump five years into the future, that didn't spoil anything for me. It made me ANTICIPATE it all the more.

What wonderful, creative things could they do with the women over the span of five years? Who'll be the same? Who'll be different? Who'll be gone?

No, I'm sorry, but having that information ahead of time only made me even more want to see what they were going to do. (And I suspect that was Marc Cherry's plan all along.)

For me, that's no spoiler. Sorry if it was for you.

I need a man.  Yes, I do.  Why, you ask, is this NEWS?

Well I need a man to play the role of Frank Lubey in the PCPH production of ALL MY SONS.  Perhaps he will turn up today or tomorrow.  I know he will, after all tomorrow is another day.

But didn't a woman say that?   :D

Good evening, DR Tomovoz!

I don't know from "series" films. Well, except more recent incarnations like "Star Wars" or "The Lord of the Rings."

I guess I have seen a few of the "Thin Man" films.

No "Andy Hardy", sippystraw?

No "Star Wars" films?

No "Flash Gordon" serials?

And not to have seen a single "Indiana Jones" film...well...it's cultural suicide at best!

Are you, perchance, Amish?

Okay.  So you're reading a novel.  It's a murder mystery.  You don't know whodunnit, but you know somebody dunnit.  Isn't part of that joy trying to figure out whodunnit?

Count me in as one of the ones who agrees with Matt H on this one regarding spoilers:

A true DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES spoiler would have said that (if it were at all true) Susan is married to Jack Shepherd five years into the future.
Or that Lynette Scavo (if it were at all true) was Gabby's prison bitch five years into the future.
Cherry and his associates started setting up the "Five Years Later" ending earlier this season with dialogue and action, it has never really been a true secret, so I don't understand how saying that the last few minutes of the show would take place five years into the future is a "spoiler."

I'm a bit confused re: the spoiler discussion.

Are you guys only talking about that you don't think what was revealed about DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES was a true spoiler.

Because I thought we weren't talking about that show in particular.

I can agree that what we found out in advance about DH would not be considered a true spoiler to some.  But i wasn't just talking about that show. I was saying why i dislike spoilers in general.

I do agree that we did not find out specifics (which would have been the real spoiler).

And DR MattH i totally get your point of view, why it would make you more curious to see the show.  I just would have been more surprised by the reveal if i had not known about the reveal (even though i did not know the specifics).

I shall now work on some blocking patterns and then head off the theatre.

The new SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE starts this week, but after two seasons, I will not be watching....because they keep saying they are choosing America's favorite dancer, BUT the judges continue to over ride America's choices.  Two dancers who were in the bottom three for several weeks - not just one week - were kept on while better dances were sent packing.

I will not watch this year because of last year's asses:  Cedric and Danny.

Goodbye, So You Think You Can Dance.  Of course this is only My Opinion, and it should not cause anyone else to watch the show or NOT.  But don't try to CHANGE my opinion.  Thank you.

I loved the finale of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.  Maybe i was not clear. I liked the ending.  All i said was i wished i had not known the plot twist.

And btw it is not really that original since ONE TREE HILL did the exact same thing (went 4 years into the future). Although maybe their scenarios were not as crazy.

I am also curious to know how they will fill in the gaps.  But it was reported that all the kids would be gone for next season. Which makes me think we will not be getting flashbacks with them.

I obviously misunderstood your post.  I thought you were upset by the reveal at the end with the leap-ahead.  I apologize for all the confusion my error caused you.

I tend not to read comments about shows when I don't want to be "leaked" to because folks who write on the internet (and in magazines) tend to give away secrets 'cause they can't KEEP secrets.

I learned my lesson the HARD way when the USA Today critic, in reviewing "The Empire Strikes Back" back in 1980, revealed THE MAJOR PLOT TWIST a day BEFORE the film was released.

I'd have had his head on a platter!

All this talk about spoilers has me thinking about my favorite Brit series.  Yep, that one.  Again.   ::)

Well, anyway, the titles of the thirteen episodes of the current series (season, to us Yanks) have all been released, save one.  Also announced have been which stories are two-parters.

Anyway, the current series titles have been/will be:

1: Partners In Crime
2: The Fires of Pompeii
3: Planet of the Ood
4 & 5: The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky
6: The Doctor's Daughter
7: The Unicorn and the Wasp
8 & 9: Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
10: Midnight
11: Turn Left
12 & 13: TBA/Journey's End.

It's episode 12 that has the fans talking.  The actual title of the story won't be revealed until just prior to the episode being broadcast in Great Britain.  So speculation is rife, yes rife, about what the title will actually be.  There is even speculation that the title of the episode will, indeed, be "TBA," with the initials standing for something other than "to be announced."  (Fans of the Doctor do keep a sense of humor about these things.   ;D)

Other things that have been released to the press:

The Doctor's Daughter was/will be played by Georgia Moffett, daughter of fifth Doctor Peter Davison.

The Unicorn and the Wasp features Agatha Christie as one of the characters.

Rose Tyler, as played by Billie Piper, returns in Turn Left and will stay with the series for the remaining two episodes.  Turn Left is also this year's "Doctor Lite" episode, focusing on other characters.  (Last year's "Doctor Lite" story, Blink, recently won Steven Moffat the BAFTA for best teleplay.)

The final episode will feature a very crowded TARDIS, as Freema Agyeman (as Martha Jones), John Barrowman (Capt. Jack Harkness), Noel Clark (Mickey Smith), Camille Coduri (Jackie Tyler), Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) and John Leeson (the voice of K9) have all been announced as members of that episode's cast.

NONE OF THIS COUNTS AS SPOILERS!  This has all been ANNOUNCED.  Spoilers would reveal actual plot elements - what has been announced instead feeds the fires of speculation and rumor.

ALSO not counting as a spoiler is the announcement that the aforementioned Steven Moffit will be taking over as chief writer and executive producer when the fifth series begins production, as Russel T. Davies is stepping down after this year's Christmas special and a couple of three other specials while David Tennant goes off and plays Hamlet or some such thing.  This signals a change, the end of one era and the beginning of another.  (No word yet as to whether he'll also be running the show over at Torchwood or The Sarah Jane Adventures.)

I have no idea who Neil Gaiman is (no, really, I don't) but I ran across this quote elsewhere and I love it.

Quote
"To be, or not to be, that is the question. Weeelll... More of A question really. Not THE question. Because, well, I mean, there are billions and billions of questions out there, and well, when I say billions, I mean, when you add in the answers, not just the questions, weeelll, you're looking at numbers that are positively astronomical."

BIG BANG THEORY had a funny and sweet episode last night.  Now that the season is over, I highly recommend watching the re-runs from the beginning.  At least give it a try.  We find this show delightfully funny.

I've been recording this but haven't watched it as often as it's been on.  I have six (I think) episodes to watch.  I really like this show, too. :)

DR Jane, i am surprised that you did not like the finale of MEDIUM. I loved it!

I did, too. After everything we were put through this season with Allison and Joe barely getting by, with Allison and Joe at each other's throats, all the unhappiness with Allison being unmasked and Devalos losing his job, etc.

The final episode righted the ship and it will hopefully sail through calmer domestic waters next season. I watch the show for those marvelous puzzles that spring from Allison's psychic dreams. To have all of the other angst on top of trying to solve crimes was just exhausting last season.

I finished watching SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW while I cooked and ate lunch. I also watched a couple of the "making of" featurettes which are, of course, fascinating for this movie.

Then I put in RAMBO (the new one coming out next week). Carnage on a grand scale wrapped around a noble crusade to rescue some missionaries trapped in the interior of Burma. Killing in every possible way and right in graphic close-up. Most disgusting was Rambo ripping out a man's throat.

A little too visceral for my taste.

Then I listened to about 30 minutes of Stallone's commentary. The civil war in Burma has been going on for sixty years (I didn't know this), and they had to scrape together some news footage to relate this for the beginning of the movie. He sounds like he had the best of intentions with the film, but it certainly degenerates into a blood-and-guts action film of the basest kind.

Wonderful cast including Paul Schulze, Julie Benz, Matthew Marsden, Ken Howard.

I began watching the seven featurettes. I got two watched. The first was on resurrecting the character for this fourth film in the series, and how difficult it was shooting in Thailand for three months.
Title: Re:WE'RE HAVING A HEAT WAVE

The second was on the music for the movie. Jerry Goldsmith wrote the scores for the first three, but, of course, he's no longer with us, so composer Brian Tyler did the music as an homage to Goldsmith.

If Ameera has a new way to stay in the country legally, it has to be because Mayer finally told her he's her father. Oh my, George AND TCB are both coming down with something or other.  Just let me know on my cell phone as soon as you can if it's looking like it may best to postpone lunch on Thursday.  (If one or both of you are still sick on Thursday, I could as of now instead do lunch Friday early afternoon, and even noon-ish on Saturday  - Sat. rehearsal doesn't start until 2.  To be honest, if you're still feeling sick, I wouldn't want to catch anything that could pass on to the cast and crewespecially.)

But I'll assume until i hear otherwise that we're still on for Thursday at 1.  We'll talk Thursday morning, but let me know ASAP if you decide Thurs. is off.

I think I'll be okay. :) Unless you want to make sure that we're both okay and have us only come up once...we could have lunch on Saturday and then see the show that night.  It would also save on gas.  But either way is fine with me.  What do you say, TCB??

I saw the first one and liked it (the Indiana Jones series). I saw the second one and loathed it and I didn't see any more. I don't plan on seeing the current one opening on Thursday so I will join you, Sing, in heathendom. I will most likely see Sex and the City The Movie on Friday May 30th. I watched it every Sunday (back when we still had HBO) and now my friend David and I are looking forward to the Big Screen Treatment.

I got my Entertainment Weekly and I was totally disgusted.  Sixty three pages devoted to SEX AND THE CITY!  What a waste of ink and paper.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the TV show when it was on and I watched a lot of the episodes.  I also knew that EW would devote a cover story to the movie.  But what movie deserves to have sixty three pages covering everything from fashion to summaries of every episode in the series?  Why would you have to know that to see the movie?

SPOILER:

I liked how they wrapped up Joe's problems & the district attorney's  I didn't dislike it, didn't find it exceptional.  I thought it was better than the previous episode.  Sometimes Alison is very annoying & doesn't treat Joe well.  It is more understandable when the case she is working on is urgent, that one wasn't..

Keith and I find far too many holes in the stories that deal with Joe & his business problems.

As for "So You Think You Can Dance?"...

I have it on good authority that this year's finalists truly some are the best they've ever had.  I'm looking forward to watching this season's competition.  Yes, the judging/elimination process is a bit "off", but, if anything, one could always just watch the competition night each week, and not the elimination night.

I've not seen it, either, but there are clips on Youtube. . .

I thought it was great. But then, I like Mrs. Miller and Wing....

I am so so so annoyed with randy and simon.  David cook was the front runner. And if they switched the vote to make little archie win i will be so mad.  I don't mind them giving their opinions. But declaring little david the winner was completely ridiculous to me.  Don't they realize that people listen to what simon says. ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DR Jennifer - Not everyone listens to the judges.  And, besides, I truly think people had chosen who they were going to vote before long before tonight's broadcast.  Right now, it's just a matter of who can text their votes faster.  ;)

*And in all the interviews up until tonight, Simon was throwing his support behind the other one.

I wept through SOUTH PACIFIC, which is one of the most splendid productions I've ever seen, far superior to a City Opera revival in the 1980s and a lacklustre Papermill production over ten years ago which starred Mr Ron Raines. This new production suffers none of the stupidity of so many lousy revivals in the past: no reducing the orchestra to a combo, no "I know how to fix this lousy show I have to do" attitude since there's nothing broken about the book, glorious design, and a wonderful cast that looks the right age - my dad was 19 when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

The orchestra played beautifully and the Entr'Acte was a wonderful acknowledgment of their talent, and I cannot wait to see it again.  Afterwards, I stopped backstage, saw Danny Burstein who was a wonderful Luther Billis, Ted Sperling the conductor, and Kelli O'Hara, with whom I've worked twice before. On my way to Ted's dressing room, I said hello to Paolo Szot who stopped the show with "This Nearly Was Mine," and while I was talking to Danny I saw Christian Delcroix who was at Goodspeed in WHERE'S CHARLEY in 2004.

Kelli O'Hara is stunning in this production, not good, but absolutely stunning. I found her so right in every way: charming, warm, a wonderful actress.

I have to pack or I would continue to rave.

I watched the remainder of the featurettes on RAMBO (5 more) and the four deleted/extended scenes. Many of these featurettes repeated a lot of the carnage I had suffered through when watching the film. Ugh!

There was also the original trailer for the movie.

Next I watched the season finale of NCIS. Two hours and not the most scintillating episodes in the show's history.

I shed no tears for Lauren Holly who I consider a very poor actress and the real weak link on the show. And, of course, the splitting up of the team will last three or four episodes, and then they'll all be reunited, just as it was two years ago when Gibbs left the team to retire and by episode three, he was back.

AMERICAN IDOL:

I have thought David Cook was the superior performer/singer for at least the last month. But the judges were right tonight. Archuleta outsang him in each round of competition. David A. really sang his heart out tonight. After a very nice opening song, Cook seemed kind of detached for the other two songs.

The results will be interesting. I still think David Cook will have the bigger music career.

It did seem like little david was really giving it his all. While DAvid Cook had some problems, and seemed like he did not try everything he could to win (like singing one of his past songs).  It just felt like he wanted to go out on his own terms. Sing what he wanted. Some people think he tanked it on purpose so he could make his own album.

I'm not saying Archie did not give a better finale performance (even though i don't care for him at all). I just still think randy and simon totally threw cook under the bus.  They could have said they thought little david was better without declaring him the American Idol. I just hate when they favor one person so far over the other in the finale. It makes it seem unfair.

I'm curious if it will make cook's fans vote till they drop.

I also really disliked the boxing part. But I was amused by ALW. HE was funny. Especially when he told little david, "don't close your eyes around me!!!!" :)

Oh and i hated hated those middle songs (contestant winners).

Well, unless they've changed the rules, both the winner and the runner-up get record contracts for their first album. After that, the company has the option to drop them from the roster or not. Both Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee were dropped after lackluster sales of their initial albums.

Thankfully, they did not.  However, they did open the show with the trumpet fanfare from "Rocky".  And the two finalists came out in boxing robes.  -And we now know that David C. weighs 180, and that David A. weighs in around 100 pounds "soaking wet". ;)

I see no point in declaring a winner of each round.  It's asinine, really, for Simon to "pronounce" anything.  At this stage, the judges should not even be heard from.

That said, I agree with DR MattH that Archuleta was the best  in each round...and by a mile in two of them.

I don't agree, necessarily, that Cook's career will be bigger.  Archuleta can sing the phone book.  Cook seems content in the business section under industrials.

The mind's eye REELS at the sight of him in that getup, squatting on every other verse.

McPhee needs more than luck...she needs someone to dub her who can sing with feeling and on pitch.

It's called "plot device"...and/or "suspend disbelief."
