Well, you've read the notes, you went through the notes not only with a tooth comb but a fine tooth comb, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently looking for a fine MOOth comb.

And the word of the day is: LUCULLAN!
-
And here is the cover of my new novel - I couldn't remember if I'd said anything about the book, but this should tell you all you need to know. The jacket spine is included since the image "wraps around". Hope everyone likes.
-
Colors are not quite accurate - a bit more blue in the sky, but it's close. This is the second time I lucked out with a photo. For the first book, I took photos of Hollywood High School, and there just happened to be a police car in front of the school. And how incredible was it that there was police tape in front of The Grove when I snapped this photo?

Welcome eight GUESTS. Have you noticed that George is just sitting there like a dead herring in the moonlight?

That's a pretty cool book jacket, BK! Can't wait to order it! :D

Not anymore. I'm also watching Craig Ferguson. I think he's pretty funny.

Before yesterday's day of posts was closed off, I was writing a post about something that TCB had written. But then the day changed here on the board and I lost the post. :P I hate it when that happens.

And then there were none. And now I must to bed.

"Drizella, where have you been?" demanded Lady Tremaine. "Just look at you! Your dress is covered with cream puff filling, marshmallow fluff and gravy! Your hair is filled with flowers and and beads and... is that a real diamond? What have you been up to?"
"Why, I've been on a date with Lou Cullan, Mother." Drizella smiled as she passed the grey-haired dame, and left everything else to her imagination.

Work has been less than fun these past few days. I won't go into detail, suffice it to say I'm looking forward to the brief Memorial Day weekend. We will be on Long Island for said weekend and I will return to the the city on Monday, May 26.
-
I didn't know about the MTM Oprah show until late Monday afternoon when I turned on the television and saw the last few minutes. I then set the VCR to tape the show from Channel 55, a Long Island station on our cable system. They show Oprah at 7pm. We were at the theatre that night so I taped the show but haven't yet watched it. We don't have a way of transferring video to DVD so I can't make a copy for you Sing, sorry.

Well, we are this close so I might as well take us to Page 2, with three more insignificant posts.

Idle Idol observations:
Both the contestants have a fan-following that would not have been swayed one way or another by last night's performance.
Most folks not previously committed would most likely have been won over by David A.
If I were going to a concert, I'd pick David C. over David A.
If I were buying an album, I'd pick David A. over David C.
If it were a contest between Bono and Harry Connick, Jr, for whom would America vote?
der Brucer
And concerning Simon's comments: I suspect for every viewer who follows his opinion there is one who will deliberately vote the other way, and of course, no matter what:
If David A. wins, it will be because Simon praised him.
If David C. wins, it will be because Simon praised his opponent.

PUB URINAL COMPUTER GAMES LAUNCHED
From correspondents in Brussels
May 20, 2008 12:50am
TWO Belgian beer fans have launched a video game named Place to Pee, which allows players to fly down ski slopes or kill aliens while relieving themselves at urinals.
Werner Dupont, a software developer and Bart Geraets, an electrical engineer, got the idea while drinking beers.
The Place to Pee' booth is designed for two users at a time and offers two games - blowing up aliens in outer space or skiing down a virtual slope.
Gamers hit their target by aiming at sensors positioned on either side of the urinal.
A specially designed paper cone allows women to play too, the inventors say.
Their Place to Pee logo resembles Manneken Pis, the little urinating boy fountain that is among Brussels' top sightseeing attractions.

Good morning!
Another cool morning and the house is open and being aired out as I type.

I had no need to check DialIdol. He's been leading for the last month or two, and as was written earlier, nothing that happened last night was going to make any difference in people's allegiances.
I also don't buy that people who supported one eliminated singer will shift their alliances to another. In years past, when my favorites were eliminated before the final round (Melinda Doolittle, Elliott Yamin), I simply stopped voting all together. I suspect others disappointed with the outcomes do the same.

It sounds like the title of a ballad from the second act of a musical called "Mike Does New York." As for the MTM reunion on "Oprah"... Be sure to check your local affiliates late-night rebroadcast schedule of the show. And sometimes they will fill a "spare" late hour on the weekends with an "Oprah" show from the past week.

And as for "American Idol"...
The two finalists seem to have all the demographics covered. David A. most definitely has the tween and 40+ support, and David C. has everyone else in between. -I just really don't see - or hear - David A. making a "hip" record, or being a true "POP" star. DR Elmore, who plays Stew Pot in the South Pacific production you saw, and how was he....he was always my favorite character in the movie (as played by Ken Clark!)
Well, since DR elmore is currently in the air - I think, I hope - right now, and since I happen to know the answer to this question...
Stew Pot is played by the wonderfully zany and very talented Victor Hawks (http://lct.org/showBio.htm?id=174&creditId=18). I used to accompany him when he was a student at Catholic University.

RE: IDOL and whether people who have a favorite will stop voting.
I think it depends.
I think there are some people who have a clear favorite. And if that favorite is eliminated, they get mad and they refuse to vote (and maybe even watch).
But i suspect that a lot of IDOL die-hard fans vote no matter what (just to vote).
Personally David Cook was not my favorite in the beginning. I then started liking him. But my favorite was still Brooke White. But after she was gone, i would have totally voted for David cook (if i was eligible to vote).
I did hear that some people were not able to get through at all. And this bothers me. I don't care if some people vote 100 times. But i think it becomes unfair if people cannot get through at all (in certain markets).

Daughtry is not POP, though. He's rock. And hard rock at that. He's definitely in a niche.
David A., when he's a bit older, could easily move into the market currently dominated by Justin Timberlake. His songs don't all sound alike, which I cannot say about David C.
I have liked David C.'s intensity and the imaginative vocals, but the songs all seem to depend upon a slide, a falsetto, a quiet moment or a head-banging moment. They're all nice touches designed to enhance a song that otherwise doesn't stand apart from any of his other vocals. I can see him drawing crowds and selling CDs. But despite all of Paula's yadda-yadda about his "range", I feel he hovers around the same note.

If it's discovered that Blame-it-on-Jose gave David a culinary tour of NYC and introduced him to Levain, then you betcha the Italians will give him the "hook 'em horns" signal, which in Italy is one of the worst things you can get (it means your brother slept with your wife and fathered your children, or something equally heinous).
-
Ooooo, I do, I do, DR George!
You're on the list! Anyone else?
-
DR RonP, who do you want to win AMERICAN IDOL?
To me it is not just about who was best last night. But who has been best for the ENTIRE season.
I've admired David Cook, but I think he's had as many "off" performances as has David Archuleta. Many times, the judges praised what I thought was an "okay" performance. But Archuleta won praise for similar "okay" performances. If you go by the judges, I think David A. has gotten more of their praise than David C. for the duration of the competition.
I've enjoyed -- and remember with vivid clarity -- several David A. performances. I only have vague memories of a few David C. ones.
-
And.....is that a euphemism?
No. Not by a long shot. And I'm certain that that was mutual.
;)

DR George - that would be lovely; thanks for offering. :) But only if you have time.

Umm... I would have passed on Levain for David. Instead, I would have introduced him to Grom Gelato to make him feel "at home" - since it is the first American branch of the Italian gelateria. I also would have taken him the officially certified Pizza places here in New York City to see if he thinks they fully deserved the certification of the Italian authorities.

Re: David Archuleta: Yes, he'll be successful, but more in the Clay Aiken vein rather than Chris Daughtry.
That's apples and oranges for me. I don't think Chris Daughtry would have been the perfect AI winner at all. Elliot Yamin was my favorite of that season. Daughty slung the mike stand around and bellowed out his songs, and I guess a lot of folks like that.
To his credit, Daughtry did a phenomenal Star-Spangled Banner to open the Super Bowl (was that the one where he sang it? Or was it to start last year's World Series?). At any rate, he was very, very good.
Clay Aiken...say or think what you like, but he is the most bankable AI contestant ever. He has had MAJOR concert success and has won awards (not like Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, of course) and seems to be pleasing Broadway audiences with his stint in "Spamalot."
He's sold 6 million CDs, too. That's not on a par with the two ladies I've mentioned, but then his concert earnings are much greater than CD earnings. I'm thinking Clay is one very rich man right now. And where, oh where, is Ruben Studdard except when AI hauls him out of his obscurity to sing another forgettable song on the show?
Archuleta is far more "viable", IMO, than Clay Aiken because he's very good-looking, he has stage presence and, more importantly, he projects sex appeal to the screaming, adoring fans. It's not a sex appeal that makes you wince, either.
David Cook has very odd hair. Maybe that's why he'll win.
-
Glad that some of you have commented favorably on the book cover. I'm very pleased with it and the book itself - really fun to write this one.

I don't believe she does.

Well, all singers nowadays tend to be in a "niche". I only brought up Daughtry since I seemed to recall that he has been the most successful sales-wise of any "AI" contestant. -I may be totally wrong about that memory/assumption.
As for David A... As many "others" have wondered/speculated/etc., regardless of whether he wins or loses tonight, it will be interesting to see how much of a role his father will continue to play in his career.

SAN FRANCISCO (May 20) - Preparing for the eventual extinction of its DVD-by-mail rental service, Netflix Inc. on Tuesday is introducing its first solution for subscribers who want entertainment delivered directly to their television sets with just a few clicks on a remote control.
The breakthrough comes in the form of 5-inch-by-5-inch device tailored for a year-old service that uses high-speed Internet connections to stream more than 10,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix's library.

And would you have stuffed some cannolis for him?
-
Well, since DR elmore is currently in the air - I think, I hope - right now, and since I happen to know the answer to this question...
Stew Pot is played by the wonderfully zany and very talented Victor Hawks (http://lct.org/showBio.htm?id=174&creditId=18). I used to accompany him when he was a student at Catholic University.
Accompany him where? To class? To the Dean's office? To the gym?
-
Time is not an issue. :)
Nonsense - Time puts out an issue weekly.

To church - since the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was right on the campus of CUA.

As for David A... As many "others" have wondered/speculated/etc., regardless of whether he wins or loses tonight, it will be interesting to see how much of a role his father will continue to play in his career.
Despite everything reported about the father, I'm wondering who is responsible for the development of David's incredible vocal nuances. Who arranges his songs and who coaches him on how to sing them? Does he instinctively know what to do or is it that he's able to follow instruction in order to sing the way he does?
-
I read that about American Airlines charging for all checked bags. Amazing. The other airlines will certainly follow within weeks.
I travel light; the last time I checked a bag was when I went to visit my sister and I checked my stuff and carried some glass stuff from my mom's in my carry-on.

That's apples and oranges for me. I don't think Chris Daughtry would have been the perfect AI winner at all. Elliot Yamin was my favorite of that season. Daughty slung the mike stand around and bellowed out his songs, and I guess a lot of folks like that.
....
Apples. Oranges. Exactly.
I just think it's very interesting how "AI's" initial focus was on finding a singer who could sing anything - a younger singer who could sing anything. Each week was a theme/decade/genre. Not a personality/award/composer. I seem to recall the contestants being asked to sound like a jazz singer when they had "Jazz Week", to sound like a pop singer when they had "70's week", and more like a Broadway or cabaret singer when they would have "Standards Week". Then the producers and contestants started to change things up. Yes, the show was more or less destined to change and change it's focus over the years. Of course, what it all comes down to is advertising revenue (a.k.a. Money).
-
Glad that some of you have commented favorably on the book cover. I'm very pleased with it and the book itself - really fun to write this one.
So you say we should judge the book by its cover?

My instinct is that David A. is a total natural. However, part of his "naturalness"(?) comes from listening to lots of music, lots of singers, lots of versions, and then he somehow sorts out what he likes and doesn't like in regards to sound and stylings. *Although, that video of him singing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" is pretty much a spot-on mimic of Jennifer Holliday.
What's been really interesting to me are the people who find David A's voice unpleasant - nasal, caught in the throat, covered, not "free". Well... To me, it's just a different sound. He actually reminds me of a less mature sounding Josh Groban at least in regards to the timbre of their voices. -And Josh Groban's voice sometimes sits well on my ears and sometimes it doesn't.

bk - Good Cover.
Did you have to get any sort of legal clearance to use "The Grove" in your title and/or in your book?

I read that about American Airlines charging for all checked bags. Amazing. The other airlines will certainly follow within weeks.
But to make up for it:
American Airlines Cuts Domestic Flights by 11% (http://www.foxbusiness.com/story/markets/industries/transportation/american-airlines-cuts-domestic-flights/)
But, since that cost is to help defray the added fuel costs, that is probably a fairer way to go than to add an additional surcharge on every ticket.
There are proposals floating about that would weigh the passenger and the luggage and charge accordingly.

-
If you like the cover, you can judge the book by its cover - if not, you can judge the book by itself, because, as with Hollywood High, there is, for me anyway, an amusing thing about both covers and books. Anyone know what it is? (You have to have read the first book to at least have a clew, I should think.)

They've already added the additional charge. From what I've heard, airline fares have gone up (heard it on the news just yesterday). I miss TWA - when American bought them and had all different rules for their frequent flyers, some of which did not carry over our hard-earned points, I stopped flying them. I'm quite happy with Continental.

Agreed, especially about Groban, but I must admit I've not found David A. nasal. But then I never thought Streisand was nasal, either.
I think I've mentioned in this forum before that Groban's "Not While I'm Around" is, to my ears, nearly the most perfect rendition of that song I've heard (it's on Barbara Cook's Carnegie Hall album). My main reservation has to do with a pushing of his voice that, for me, sucks some of the emotional resonance out of the song for the sake of a bit of showing off.

Perhaps you meant to type fiend? ;)
No, my silver-throated pal, I meant "friend."

Glowingly reviewed in Publishers Weekly:
The only negative in the review was the lack of lyrics:
....Many songs are cited, but the lack of lyrics is disappointing, Strouse instead regales with fascinating, sometimes surprising, anecdotes, such as Mike Nichols, clad in a new camel-hair coat, skidding about in his own vomit at an airport. Detailing desperate rewrites, insecurities of theater people, footlight failures and humiliations, as well as theatrical triumphs, Strouse's superb backstage memoir deserves a standing ovation.

Hi, Michael! Are you thinking about coming up north on Saturday?
I was just about to mention this...the weekend is cooking to be a very busy one for me and it looks like I will be unable to attend the HHW Washington festivities :(
-
Welcome eight GUESTS.
-
I spy DR Elmore - are you in Ohio?
-
It sounds like the title of a ballad from the second act of a musical called "Mike Does New York." It's sung by the title character, Mike, as he packs his bags, removes his bedding from Larry's fire escape, and hopes in a taxi to relocate to a loft in Tribeca that he plans on sharing, indefinitely, with a young Sikh seeking fame and fortune on Broadway.
;)
It's actually sung after Mikey mistakingly picks up a terrorist who ineptly bombs my apartment, leading to the Act One curtain where I evict him.
I am now in Ohio! All quiet on the Western Front.
So far.
-
Aw, shucks. I was gonna guess that DR elmore3003 murdered Lady Macbeth, and was in jail, using his "one phone call" to connect to HHW!
-
a terrorist who ineptly bombs my apartment
The lengths some people will go to, to get rid of bed bugs! ;)
-
DR Elmore, who plays Stew Pot in the South Pacific production you saw, and how was he....he was always my favorite character in the movie (as played by Ken Clark!)
Completely different, short and squat and very funny. You wouldn't like the bodybuilding contestant, either.
-
...the weekend is cooking
It certainly IS! And washing, and cleaning, and running errands. ;)
Sorry to hear this, DR MBarnum. :'(

I received a very nice, unexpected package from DR Sweetdoll today. Unfortunately, I still don't know when to leave. ;D

Hmmmmmmm.....off to rehearsal.....BLOCKING Act One...

Welcome to Ohio, DR Elmore!

Everyone, thank you for all the vibes!

I began my afternoon of viewing by finishing up MY NAME IS EARL. I had watched half of it last week, enjoyed it, but didn't feel pressed to see the last half hour. However, I did watch it today and found it very funny. An excellent season finale to be able to set things up well for next season.
-
Next, I rewatched last night's IDOL. Funny, they all dumped on the quality of David Archuleta's song "In This Moment" as not being a great song. Well, I loved it. Not just his rendition but the song itself had a very aching melodic line with some of the same intensity of "Unchained Melody." His singing of it was truly sublime: soaring in the right places and then quiet before building to that monster climax with the hugely sustained last two words with such control.
-
Next, I watched the blu-ray of BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD. How did this movie not get included in the year end awards? Crisp, expert direction, searing performances from the entire cast (those people will haunt me for weeks now), and a story put together with such labyrinthine cleverness.
I *LOVED* it!
-
Next, I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Silly argument between the always clueless Noah and the knowing Luke.
I guess they have to argue; there would be no drama otherwise.
They were not in the previews for tomorrow.
-
To finish up the afternoon, I took a page from yesterday's TOD and put on the MISS MARPLE film MURDER SHE SAID. I got about 40 minutes of it watched, so I'll be able to finish it when I go back down and still have plenty of time to do THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, another Blu-ray disc.
-
Do you see dead people? ;)

You're gonna LOVE it, I'm willing to bet! No, it's not a "great" movie, but it's fun, fun, fun and has winning performances, a scary premise and some spectacular effects. Very nice underscore, too.
It upconverts spectacularly, so the Blu-ray will surely be d-a-z-z-l-i-n-g!

I believe that's in line with my comments. I knew Clarkson and Underwood had outsold Aiken in CDs, but I think he's made his filthy lucre in concert appearances.
More power to 'em all. And may Elliot Yamin and Melinda Doolittle soon join them.

So far.
It's actually sung twice in the second act, subtitled "He Said - He Said". First, Mike tells his new friends about his experience visiting and staying on Larry's fire escape and then sings his song to explain that, because his lifelong search for a soulmate ended when he met his Sikh, he had to cut his visit with Larry short after Larry read him the riot act over his leaving his Sikh's unwrapped turban draped over Larry's sofa.
Next, Larry recounts to a gathering of his friends his experience as related above and gives a rendition of the song told from the viewpoint of someone who couldn't quite get the houseguest and his be-turbaned one-night-stand out quickly enough.

That really is good luck :) Congrats on the nice cover!
-
Very nice book jacket. How fortunate you were there at the right times to get the photos you wanted.
Ah yes, but is there any truth to the rumors that Guy Haines was seen haunting that area the night before with a Deringer concealed in his trench coat pocket?

Back from a lovelier than lovely luncheon with Mr. Patrick Cassidy. We ate at Stanley's - here's what's funny - whenever I have a lunch meeting at Stanley's, Miss Karen Morrow and Mr. Billy Barnes are ALWAYS there! Same with today - isn't that weird? In any case, Mr. Cassidy and I spoke of many things and it was all very delightful.

After that, I had to do several errands. Later I have to go out again and print up a new galley - I hadn't realized, but we'd left the right side of the text ragged, which I don't really like anymore, style-wise, so Grant fixed it and e-mailed it to me.

Took the new galley pdf to Staples - they've got a new gal working there and the two regular guys couldn't be bothered to help me, so I fear for what I'll be picking up, but hopefully she got it right. She seemed confused the entire time. I think it's pretty obvious she'll charge me the full per page price rather than the script rate, but we'll fix that when I get back there at six to pick it up. Because there's a nearby Kinko's, Staples has always been a great place to Xerox - cheaper, no waiting, friendly - but that's all changed in the last couple of months, and now everyone has caught on, so that the last five or six times I've been there, there's always a wait, they can never just do it while I wait, and unless it's one of the gals I deal with regularly, the friendliness has evaporated.

I just spoke to FJL and he has arrived safely in Seattle / Tacoma in beautiful Washington State.
George and I will be lunching with him tomorrow at 1:00.

So... I headed out earlier to meet my friend, Michael. A friend of his came into town this morning, and since we were all in need of some lunch, we went to lunch.
We ended up at Chirping Chicken (http://www.chirpingchickennyc.com/) where we all enjoyed our very generously portioned salads, sandwiches and/or platters. -I swear, they must some great deal from their poultry vendor/supplier. The small(!) Grilled Chicken Salad comes with two, large grilled chicken breasts for just under $7.00. *And their ribs are very good too.
-
After lunch, we walked a few blocks down Amsterdam where we stopped into Crumbs (http://www.crumbsbakeshop.com/). We had originally just planned to stop in there and look - Magnolia was our original dessert destination - but after Michael's friend saw the offerings in the display case, well... YUM!
*On the eventual walk down to Times Square, we did stop and look in on Levain (http://levainbakery.com/), Grandaisy Bakery (http://www.crumbsbakeshop.com/), and, last, but certainly not least, Magnolia (http://www.magnoliabakery.com/). :)
-
Welcome To Washington State, DR FJL!

After my afternoon of Enabling, I headed on down to SoHo for some clothes shopping. Well, I attempted to shop for some clothes. I stopped into Uniqlo (http://www.uniqlo.com/us/) hoping to find a basic polo shirt or two. Alas, they just switched to their Summer Color Palette which just simply did not work with/for me. Of course, there was a storewide sale on their polo shirts... Ah, well.

Well, since I've never been to Italy... However, when their first location opened here, they brought over the whole opening staff from Italy. -Which did lend an air of authenticity to the whole enterprise, however, the lack of English speaking staff and a translator did end up slowing things down at the register. In any case...
I've been there on more than one occasion when a family of Italian tourists will almost end up passing the storefront... then end up ordering many cups of many flavors and walking out of there talking very happily in Italian. :)

Here is Steve Stanley's "review" of The Brain - it's filled with typos (some of which I'll fix because they really need fixing) - he has a site of his own and loves most everything he sees (he's never given a bad review to anything), but we got a "wow", his highest rating.
If you’ve ever groaned through a 1950s Grade Z Hollywood sci fi flick, you are sure to enjoy Bruce Kimmel’s musical comedy spoof The Brain From Planet X.
Brain’s world premiere was a week-long production in December 2006 at Kimmel’s alma mater, the LACC Theatre Academy, in a pro/am staging which featured four Equity guest artists leading an otherwise student cast. Having thoroughly enjoyed that production (including being featured as the audience participation “guest star” in the Brain Tap number), I’ve been eagerly awaiting its first long run, the Orange County premiere at the Chance Theater in Anaheim.
The show is as fresh and funny and tuneful as ever. It’s also more than a bit racy and irreverent, which may shock more conservative OC residents.
Kimmel has cast many of my favorite Chance Theater Resident Company Members in lead roles, beginning with the stupendous Michael Irish as the Narrator, who cautions the audience that what they are about to see is absolutely true and based on sworn testimony! Irish chews the scenery as if he were a member of Ed Wood’s stable of stars (remember Plan 9 From Outer Space?) with appropriately over the top gestures and an eyebrow which seems to rise at least an inch above the others.
We are soon introduced to Joyce and Fred (Allison Appleby and award-winning Bob Simpson*, reunited after the recent and much raved about Assassins). In “Here On Earth,” the quintessential 1950s suburban couple sing of their perfect life “except for the communists and the threat of nuclear annihilation.” Teenage daughter Donna (Shannon Cudd) is off to the library to do research on her paper on bomb shelter decorating ideas. Fred thinks that 7:30 is a bit too late for a good girl to go out, until Donna points out that tomorrow IS the weekend.
Suddenly, there is an explosion of sound and bright red light! “It was horrible,” cries Donna. “It sounded like vomiting. Like the entire Mormon Tabernacle Choir vomiting at the same time!”
Life goes on, despite alien invasion, and Donna heads off for her date with beatnik boyfriend Rod (Dimas Diaz*). Rod has turned from juvenile delinquency to Allen Ginsberg, but Donna loves him because he’s “bad, bad, bad” and he loves her because she’s “like a cat on a hot tin roof.” Song cue: “Good Girl/Bad Girl.”
Meanwhile, General Mills (America’s only living 1-Star General) is meeting with the chiefs of staff, Colonel Sanders, Marshall Fields, and Major Surgery, accompanied by his assistant Private Partz. (Yes, it’s corny, but don’t you love it?) The General is concerned with strange occurrences in the San Fernando Valley, which happens to be exactly where Joyce and Fred make their happy home.
The strange occurrence is the arrival of outer space aliens Zubrick and Yoni (Daniel Berlin and Emily Clark*, John Hinckley and Squeaky Fromme of Assassins, together again and this time out not to assassinate but to mind-control ALL Americans). Berlin’s Zubrick is a young John Candy in bright blue spandex with a helium voice and Clark’s Yoni a shapely vixen with a foot-high blue beehive she surely copied from Marge Simpson. The two are subjects of the most fearsome outer space leader of all, The Brain From Planet X, who looks and sounds like a Catskill comic a la Milton Berle, Myron Cohen, or Shecky Greene. The Brain announces that they will be following not Plan 9 (“that’s been done before”) but an even more dastardly one, PLAN 10! (from outer space of course). Song cue: “The Plan.”
Fred is an amateur inventor (One of his latest inventions prepares teenagers’ lungs for “adult smoking”) and he sings about “The World Of Tomorrow” where “streets are clean and gas is free.” (That lyric gets a big laugh.) General Mills arrives and asks Fred to organize a search party to hunt out the aliens who’ve attacked Earth. Meanwhile, Zubrick keeps getting lost himself, prompting Yoni to complain, “You wouldn’t know the Earth from Uranus!”
Things start getting serious when our alien invaders zap Joyce with their “mind bender” gun, causing her eyes to stare blankly ahead and robbing her of any romantic urges. Refusing Fred even a hello kiss, she informs him “I’m afraid you have to get used to the new me because she’s not going away any time soon,” and if that weren’t enough, tells him this again in song (“Things Are Going To Be Changing Around Here”).
“There Are Saucers In The Sky” sings the ensemble as one by one, the Earthlings’ wills are bent and the audience is sent out to intermission.
Act 2 features the tap dancing (and brain tapping) “Brain Tap,” a newly sexified Yoni’s “I Need An Earthling,” the Brain’s very own “The Brain Song,” Joyce’s declaration of “Independence Day,” and Zubrick’s “All About Men,” the gayest song since Mel Brooks wrote the “throw out your hands,
stick out your tush” number for Blazing Saddles, and featuring an enormous beach ball and two shirtless hunks in gold lamé swim trunks.
After all this, you may wonder, in the words of the narrator, if you dare be an eyewitness to such unspeakable TERROR!
The answer is “Of course!” It’s musical theater!
Bruce Kimmel not only wrote music and lyrics, he co-wrote the book (with David Wechter) and directed both the LACC original and the Chance’s OC premiere. Though the Equity leads in the original were vocally stronger than their Chance counterparts, that is a minor quibble in an all around fantastic cast. Appleby and Simpson are a delight as Brain’s answer to Ward and June Cleaver (or Ozzie and Harriet), and bubbly Cudd and too-cool Diaz get an A+ on their high school make- out exam. Mark Rothman moves from a successful writing career, which includes numerous episodes of The Odd Couple, Happy Days, and Laverne and Shirley, to become a very funny Borscht Belt Brain. Best and funniest of all are Berlin and Clark as our alien invaders. Who would have thought those two Assassins could be such outrageous visitors from another planet? The talented cast is completed by Warren Draper* (a gravely voiced General Mills), Dan Flapper (Private Partz), Cody Andersen, Jamie Lee Baker, Marlana Filannino, Patrick Robert Kelly, and Jenna Romano.
Musical director Bill Strongin leads a spirited 3 piece band: Strongin on piano, Lonn Hayes on percussion, and Ross Craton on reed. Adam Cates’ inventive choreography uses 1950s sci-fi flicks as its inspiration. Masako Tobaru’s set design is simple in the extreme, but it does use some very funny Fisher-Price toys as scientific instruments, and there are a number of clever sliding-door gags. Tobaru’s projections change the set from a suburban home to a space ship to other assorted locations; if only they didn’t mostly disappear when the lights go up. Lighting is by KC Wilkerson and sound design by Dave Mickey and Mitchell Kohen. deb (not a typo) Millison’s costumes range from 1950s casual to outer space outrageous.
Though not at the spoof level of say, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, The Brain From Planet X remains a thoroughly entertaining two and a quarter of fun and music. Audience members with some experience seeing the schlock movies it’s inspired by will have their enjoyment enhanced, but even those who pop in unprepared are likely to have a grand old sci-fi time!

Off to pick up the galley of The Brain - hopefully it will have been printed correctly.

UGH!
Can someone please tell me when they Jonas Brothers' 15 minutes of "fame" are up?
UGH!!!!
DOUBLE Platinum?!?!?!?!?
-At least you can tell that they aren't using any auto-tuning or sweetening for their vocals. ;)
-
OK... That truly has to be one of the most cringe-worthy, uncomfortably funny and embarassing moments ever broadcast on TV!!!
*And for those watching "American Idol", I have a feeling we will all be in agreement about that.
;D

Keith's aunt and cousin had a very nice time in NY. They thanked me, and those who helped me-especially DR Jose, with play info. They have asked if I want to join them on their next trip to NY. They go every year or so.
Aw, thanks, DR Jane. -And I look forward to seeing you next year when you join them for their visit. :)
-
Well...I'm off to see La Mancha.
The Man of La Mancha in Spain.
Almost a "Wizard of Oz" reference. ;)
Have a good evening, all!
-
I am off to bed. It is a little late to try for beauty sleep tonight, before I meet Fred tomorrow; but there is always the old standby - mortician's wax!
-
Aw, thanks, DR Jane. -And I look forward to seeing you next year when you join them for their visit. :)
It would be great. The last October I was in NY I met up with them for a day. That was a coincidence we were in town at the same time.

If the airlines are going to charge for checked baggage, someone needs to lighten up on the 3oz liquid carry-on regulations.
I'm seeing more sample sizes in the store these days. That's the way to go.
-
Oh great, we're supposed to have "long tracking tornados' this weekend. Glad I'm not planning to go to the lake. I'd rather be here with the girls if there is going to be a storm

I met a guy at Panera this morning who is going to be on Design Star. He must be a carpenter assistant or something. He said they've already taped and he's helping a woman named Jenn. He's only on for 2 days. I'm assuming it's one of those "go out in the boonies" type of challenges. If anyone wants to know, I can tell you when his episode airs...of course that tells you when she is still on the show...

And here is the cover of my new novel - I couldn't remember if I'd said anything about the book, but this should tell you all you need to know. The jacket spine is included since the image "wraps around". Hope everyone likes.
Great cover Bk!

I'm seeing more sample sizes in the store these days. That's the way to go.
When I went to Utah, I took travel sizes... However, I found myself buying a lot of lotion. My skin always felt dry.

How long until they charge for a carry-on?

comments on the performances on tonight's AMERICAN IDOL
OK... That truly has to be one of the most cringe-worthy, uncomfortably funny and embarassing moments ever broadcast on TV!!!
*And for those watching "American Idol", I have a feeling we will all be in agreement about that.
;D
ARe you talking about that freaky guy from the reject pile? Really bad.
But i will say i actually enjoyed most of the show. It didn't feel like filler. And was quite enjoyable to watch.

As for the MTM reunion on "Oprah"... Be sure to check your local affiliates late-night rebroadcast schedule of the show. The ABC affiliate here in NYC sometimes rebroadcasts the same episode at 1:00am that was broadcast that afternoon, and sometimes they don't. And sometimes they will fill a "spare" late hour on the weekends with an "Oprah" show from the past week.
I wish they would do that more here in this area. THe local NBC affiliate will rebroadcast previous installments of Conan and Jay Leno. However we have Informercial "heck" on the other two. I would rather see an hour or two of Oprah instead of informercials.

Due to my work schedule I have only seen a couple of American Idol. I like both David A and David C.
-
I believe that's in line with my comments. I knew Clarkson and Underwood had outsold Aiken in CDs, but I think he's made his filthy lucre in concert appearances.
More power to 'em all. And may Elliot Yamin and Melinda Doolittle soon join them.
I did not care for Kelly Pickler... Her voice grates my nerves.
What ever happened to Ruben Stoddard? Taylor Hicks?
Kelly Clarkson is coming to Grand Forks this summer for a concert.
-
I started to watch Sergeant's Three on TCM and promptly fell asleep for an hour. Prior to that, I re-entered my fixes on the new galley with the non-ragged right side - much neater, and I'm now halfway through finding widows, orphans, and bad breaks. Not all that many, frankly.
-
I had a Chinese Chicken Salad for lunch, and a donut. I'm wondering if I should eat something else or leave it at that.
-
I see people sitting there like so much fish.
-
Is tomorrow really Thursday? How on earth did that happen?
-
I was reading... :)
-
Perhaps I'll mosey on over to Gelson's and see if there's anything that catches my eye, food-wise. Just some sort of snackarooni.
-
I began my evening by finishing MURDER SHE SAID. Always enjoy it even though I've probably seen it 25 or 30 times in my life. It's like comfort food. You know what it's going to be and it never disappoints.
-
Next, I watched THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. I had seen it before when it first appeared on HBO-HD, but they had compromised the aspect ratio by reformatting it to 1.78:1, so this was my first time seeing the entire wide frame image. Pretty spectacular special effects. Story is fairly lame, but it has a first rate cast, and the combination of spectacular Blu-ray picture and DTS-HD Master Audio sound made for a VERY involving movie. Reference quality stuff for video and audio.
-
I continued getting my Jake Gyllenhaal fix by rewatching portions of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN while I waited for 10 p.m. to arrive. Always a pleasure watching his award winning work in this movie. (He won the BAFTA Best Supporting Actor award for his performance).
-
I watched the last four minutes of AMERICAN IDOL.
The winner came as no surprise (as I said, he'd been the leader for the last two months), but I was fairly disgusted with Simon Cowell. I don't for a minute believe he "recanted" his opinion a bit without some inside information. I think as one of the producers, he was tipped off as to the winner, and not wanting to appear as if he couldn't pick the right winner, tried to go back on his opinions of the night before.
His ego got the best of him, I think.
-
CSI: NY had an excellent season ending episode except, like many shows this season, left it with a real cliffhanger and NO resolution at all. See you guys back in September. You'll be the only CSI show I'll be watching next season.
-
TOmorrow I'll have BOSTON LEGAL and LAW & ORDER to watch.
I'm also planning to get started on the next review set: the Logo series EXES AND OHS.
-
When I went to Utah, I took travel sizes... However, I found myself buying a lot of lotion. My skin always felt dry.
Just remember, only the liquids and gels in your carry-on have to be under 3 oz. and in a Zip-Loc bag. You can still have larger sizes in your checked luggage.
-
With no writing to do, I will be heading down now to bed, the earliest I've been able to retire in quite some time!
Good night!
-
As for "Idol"... I was sort of surprised that they ran over for as many minutes as they did. I had to go ahead and start recording the "10:00 News" so that my roommate would be able to see the whole show.
-
Well, I have a full day of auditions ahead of me, so...
Goodnight.
-
And so the WUSSBURGERING continues unabated. WEHT Vixmom - is she done with us?
-
I'm quite logey. I had some eggs as my snack.
-
Well, we do have nine count them nine GUESTS just sitting there like so much fish.
-
Fourteen GUESTS and li'l ol' me. Limbo, anyone?
-
Make that nineteen GUESTS. Anyone for the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance)?
-
Matthew was here for but a moment, then was gone without so much as a post.
-
.... please....
Gotcha. :)
-
Back from seeing Man of La Mancha at Capital Playhouse. It was very good.
-
Great set, good voices, costumes appropriately distressed...the only distraction (and not in a good way) was this one moment when one of the chorus guys comes out from under a table and you see his very wide and very bright band from his Calvin Cline underwear sticking out from under his pants.

And now for something completely different:
Federal court rules against military gays policy (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20080522/Military.Gays/)
The military cannot automatically discharge people because they're gay, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday in the case of a decorated flight nurse who sued the Air Force over her dismissal.
The three judges from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals did not strike down the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. But they reinstated Maj. Margaret Witt's lawsuit, saying the Air Force must prove that her dismissal furthered the military's goals of troop readiness and unit cohesion.
