Well, you've read the notes, the notes' title had a little deja vu, since I didn't realize we'd already had a notes title called The Hunchback of Studio City, which, I presume, covered the same territory, and now it is time for you to post until the QuasiMOOdo cows come home.

DR Edisaurus - the copy I have of the episode is on a VHS tape.  The tape was spanking brand new but has an annoying amount of "flutter."  However, I'm happy to dub you a DVD copy if you like, to save you having to buy a whole season.  Do you have your own set of 3-D glasses?  The 3-D effects are for the four dream sequences only, and it really works!  Stuff popping out all over the screen.  For some reason, I thought that couldn't be reproduced on a television screen, but it does work!

I don't know any home remedies. Wish I did.

DR Jeanne knows a lot about homepathic remedies, and the ones she's recommended that I have tried have been very successful.

We can't even muster more than five GUESTS.  Of course, George is here, sitting there like so much fish.

Yesterday after leaving work, I mailed three packages to people here on HHW (Ginny, Singdaw and Dakota) who had asked for DVD copies of the Oprah Winfrey show with the cast of the Mary Tyler Moore Show.  I scribbled notes explaining that I had recorded the episode from the hi-def channel and when it's watched on a regular DVD and TV, the screen image is smaller than the TV...not just top and bottom bars, but black space all around the image.  I don't know why.  I hope that it's not too annoying. :-\

After going to and leaving the post office, I went to Lowe's to see what they had in the way of skylights.  I would someday like to replace the one that I have in my ceiling...it doesn't open and there's no way to vent the loft area where I sleep.  Last year, it got up to 93°F, which is not comfortable for sleeping.  They had nothing at all...no displays, no brochures, nothing that I could see.

So, I decided to look at floor lamps and remote controlled light switches.  At night in my three-story townhouse, when I need to go down to the bottom floor, there is no way to turn on lights on the bottom floor before I get down there.  It's quite inconvenient.  So, I bought a floor lamp and a wireless light switch.  You plug the lamp (or whatever) into this receiver and you plug that into the outlet.  It has a wireless wall plate light switch that you can put anywhere, up to 100 feet away.  I have the remote control switch upstairs so that when I need to go down stairs at night, I can turn on the light before I get there and actually be able to see and not fall down the stairs.  It's pretty cool!

When I got home, I watched "The Sarah Jane Adventures," "Doctor Who" and "Battlestar Galactica."  Then, for some reason, I decided to hook up my laserdisc player to my DVD burner, which I eventually would have done anyway.  I recorded Bernadette Peters' 1979 live concert (in Discovision!).  The visual quality is not so great anymore (it looks like an old videotape), but it still sounds good.  A few years ago, I made an audio CD of the soundtrack, but the last time I looked, I wasn't able to find it.  Now, I'll know where it is.

As for back pain relief, well a devil's claw tea brew can help, though it's not very tasty.  I would think you would find the herb at a local health food store.

Yesterday Jose said:

After leaving the Lower East Side with baked goods in tow, I headed over to Chelsea to meet up with my friend, Carl, for dinner.  We ended up supping at the Hollywood Diner, which, I believe, is just down the stairs from DR Ben's abode.  After dinner, he headed on up to the Cort to see The 39 Steps, and I headed on home.

Well, whaddayaknow! Yes, the Hollywood is on the corner of 16th Street and 6th Avenue, just half a block from the old apartment. We were not there at the same time but I also had dinner at the Hollywood last night. Since Ant is still on Long Island I decided to go to the diner for Friday Night Dinner. I was there around 6:45 if I recall correctly. I was sitting at the counter and I didn't see Jose and friend so I assume they were there later or already gone. Hope your dinner was good, mine was.

When I got home, I watched "The Sarah Jane Adventures," "Doctor Who" and "Battlestar Galactica." ...
The Sarah Jane Adventures had a very nice ending for their/her first season, I thought.  And watching the whole story, back to back, was certainly preferable to seeing part two of a story first, leading into part one of the next tale.  Whoever came up with how they've been showing TSJA on SciFi should be castigated, at the very least.

The conclusion to the Doctor Who two-parter, however, made it the first real disappointment, story-wise, of the season.  Why must they always show UNIT to be filled with incompetents?  Freema's best scenes had her playing with acting opposite herself.  And the human villian what the result of what, a terrible date the writer had where the only way she could exorcise the memory was to portray him on-screen?  I can't blame her, exactly, but it's the sort of nonsense that belongs on some other show, not Who.

I don't bother with BG.  Just never got into it.

Dinner was a success last night.  I'd brined two gorgeously thick pork loin chops for a few hours with a simple mix of salt, sugar and garlic in water, then seared both sides and popped them in the cast iron pan into a 450 oven until they were nicely done.

Meanwhile, there was a mix of diced sweet potato and carrot, which had been roasted and then glazed with a syrup made of lemon juice and zest, sugar, some thyme and freshly grated ginger.

Der Brucer was happy with what was on his plate.

And I've discovered a new multi-tasker, a quick way to juice lemons.  Take a lemon half, pop it into a potato ricer, and with a quick squeeze the lemon is juiced and all the pips and the rind stay in the ricer.  Sweet!

It's a bit overcast today which is surprising since I don't think there is any call for rain today. Going to be back in the 80s, so the A/C is very close to being turned on. Today will likely be the last day without it.

Today I'll likely watch another NCIS episode before I begin my next review job. It will be THE ANIMATION SHOW, Volume 3, an MTV series that collects animated shorts from around the world for airing. The actual shorts (17 of them) run less than 45 minutes total, but I noticed there are a bunch of bonus feature interviews and other goodies on the disc, so I suspect that's how I'll be spending a good portion of the evening.

I have KNOCKED UP recorded from HBO-HD if I have time tonight, and I'll give tomorrow over to THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN.

THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN actually comes out on DVD next week, I think. Luckily, one of the HD channels that my cable service DOES have is A&EHD, so I do have the show in HD.

(Now, if they'd only get USA-HD, I wouldn't complain too much.)

The only remedy I know is relief for kidney stones. This has worked for me for the last three stones that I had.

Fill the bathtub with the hottest water you can stand, almost to the scalding point, and get in the tub. The very, very hot water deadens the pain of the stone as it moves through the tract to the bladder. (Keep adding hot water the second you start feeling the pain come back.)

The water around you also prompts the urge to urinate which is what you want to do as much as you can to push the stone through.

I enjoyed SHADOW IN THE WINDOW last night, and it was certainly odd to see Betty Garrett in such a role. Phil Carey is certainly quite the hunk in this film, as he is in that Allison Hayes starrer COUNT 3 AND PRAY. I wonder why I have not yet interviewed the man. I must rectify that.

Last night was a really great show - audience was standing and cheering by the end. It's always so much fun when you get a great crowd like that in. One more tonight, then tomorrow's matinee, and I'll be saying goodbye to this cast, who have become such good friend over the past three months.

But I'll be happy to get home to the cabin and the critters. Sheesh - Jewish Thighs opens two weeks from yesterday, and I haven't even opened the script, yet - oy. Fortunately, the music director is from the original show, eight years ago, and has played several productions for me - he ain't Jose, but he's a peach to work with.

Another lovely day in LA... still raining and cold at the cabin...

I mowed the front and side yard yesterday and nearly got heat stroke again. It's my own fault, I don't stop when I start getting too hot and don't take water with me.

Anyway, I just have the small back yard and 2 pieces of the side yard to do and it's done, so I think I'll get out there.

I have an appt. in 10 minutes, but it's a bit slow this morning.  The weather is lovely, and I guess everyone is doing something else right now.  I know I would be, if I didn't work here.

Saturday is NOT my favorite shopping day.  Mostly we have had people who just want to LOOOOOOK at things this morning.  And in the whole store cannot find ONE thing to buy.

Cilla, do you mean the ANNIE sequel in D.C.?  I was there on the next-to-last night (when Dorothy Stanley went on for Dorothy Loudon) which was a Friday, and then on the last night when Dorothy Loudon returned for that final performance (that was a Saturday).

I meant the original ANNIE before it went to Broadway. I was there the night Roslyn Carter went to see it.

Wonder how many busses they'll have to add to the Sex and the City tour.  I haven't taken that one, but it looks like fun.

So, DR Cillaliz, how 'bout sometime between August 27 and Sept. 1?

So, DR Cillaliz, how 'bout sometime between August 27 and Sept. 1?

I'm seriouisly thinking about it Ginny.   I have to go to Chicago and go to a baseball game with Justice Alito mid August....(ok and the 8th Circuit Judicial Conference - but we do have an event at a White Sox game and tickets to the game and Justice Alito will be there too).  So I have to see how that will work with my schedule.  But if the murder trial goes on July 22, like I think it will, I may need more than one trip out of town in August/Sept.

Is that Labor Day?

Rainy Saturday....heavy winds, rain, thunder and lightning last night.  One branch of our elm three in the front yard is a hanging by a thread!  But I would guess all that water will help the flowers grow....and better it happens this weekend than last weekend when we were painting!

I believe some of that stormy weather is due here in NYC shortly.

WOW!  We must have just missed you!  We walked in a little after 7:00 - maybe 7:10 at the latest.  Next time...

*And, hopefully, next time they'll have their A/C turned on - it was a little stuffy in there last night.

According to NOT SINCE CARRIE: (A good recounting of what happened during the Washington DC tryout)

Martin Charnin didn't allow Loudon to perform at that performance. Because Loudon didn't want to do an Annie revival instead of Annie 2.

Coney Island did play an important part in the original concept.
There were musical numbers. (I have a cd of all the songs written for Annie 2)
Coney Island is where Miss Hannigan and her cohorts discover a look a like for Annie. Where they decide to make a switch with the real Annie.

It was at this point in concept Miss Hannigan was to marry Warbucks so that Annie will have a mother and then kill them both and get his money. (This aspect of the plot ws carried over to Annie Warbucks version)

They sing to the double "You can be Annie, too (2)"

Media check, a day late:

CD:  For anyone who has never heard Russian composer/pianist Nikolai Kapustin, I cannot recommend his compositions highly enough.  Imagine Eldar playing Rachmaninoff and you have a little idea of the treats waiting in store for you.

DVD:
We watched a way-in-advance copy of a 1992 UK miniseries called Anglo Saxon Attitudes last night.  Totally unique, weird little piece, with a very young Daniel Craig and even younger (and pretty hefty, I might add) Kate Winslet.

I am sleepy.  I mowed this morning and then went to Penneys to order some Bali double cell celulose shades for the living room.  I've been putting it off because of the cost (I need 5 of them). Since they have to be special ordered, they are more. But they had them at 60% off then 15% off of that and by opening an account I got another 10% off of that with free shipping.  It was a good enough deal to get them.  I had planned to paint before I got the shaades, but with this sale, I just couldn't wait.

There are 2 dishes that my brother-in-law's aunt makes that i just swoon over. One is these special spring rolls. I LOVE these. And the other is thin noodles (like you get at a chinese restaurant) with veggies and chicken or pork. That is so good.

Whenever my sister has a party her hubbies relatives bring the most delicious food!

Enough Brain surgery for today. I will most likely watch a bit of tv, but i have yet to decide what I will watch. I've got these three Netflix movies. Last night, after the final episode of THE TUDORS, I watched a bit of a recently acquired DVD of the City Opera's broadcast of Britten's PAUL BUNYAN, a dreadful broadcast of one of the most beautiful productions I ever saw in a theatre. Even with the irritating camera work, the piece still moved me tremendously. I also watched a bit of the film version of Hans Werner Henze's opera THE YOUNG LORD, but the music's very stringent and an acquired taste.

With the 80 minutes I had left in the evening, I watched KNOCKED UP, at least the first part of it. I'll have to finish it tomorrow. Some funny lines from the guys who were given almost all of the comedy for some reason (well they wrote it, so I guess it makes sense they'd throw much of the good material to themselves).

I didn't realize Paul Rudd was in this.

ONE, TWO, THREE turned out to be a very funny movie...sort of in the IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD vein.

Now for some dinner and then this movie JALTA BADAN (1973) ...I have no clue what it is about but it stars Kum Kum (who I adore) and Kiran Kumar

TOD: My best cure for headaches is to have rain. Until then, I have a strong cup of Starbucks coffee and an ibuprofen and sometimes a heating pad or an ice pack. But mostly, it's the rain that makes it go away. It might be three days before it gets better.

Backache: lie on the floor for a while. Then when it gets better, go buy new sneakers.

So I'm watching that cinematic curio, SCREAMING MIMI, a rather bland incarnation of Fredric Brown's quirky mystery, and I'm immediately struck by the opening score (and later, the closing score).  I immediately know I've heard it before and that Columbia has recycled it for this low-budget epic.  I start to search my Columbia films book when it suddenly hits me -- it's the score from ON THE WATERFRONT.

Well, you could always make a free-form tart or a crostata.  -Unless you were planning on making something with a custard-like filling.

*Or you could just make a square pie in an 8x8 pan.

I ended up not going to the memorial service for Richard...it was just to close time-wise, to the wedding, which was an hour north. So I cleaned house, shopped for a wedding present and made myself presentable for the wedding of the step-daughter of Greg's brother. It was a very traditional, predictable wedding. Actually, it was very much like when the bride's mother married Greg's brother last year!

Two creatures were fighting in my back yard....it scared both me and Dog Bosco...I have never heard such horrible screaching in my life...I knew it was not a cat or a dog...and when I went into the back yard, in the dark (isn't that what they always do in the horror films?), the fight broke up and the horrid screaching stopped...but I could see two eyes looking at me in the darkness over by the tree in my back yard....it was very spooky...

...the screaching sounded like someone was killing a pig with a vulture...but I suspect it was either racoons or some hugantic rodent...or both...fighting over the food in the squirrel feeder.

I made Freddy come inside so he wouldn't get eaten.

Possums, MB.

I had never seen a possum before I moved to the NW.  I was living in a little house in NE Portland and we had a garden out back.  My girlfriend at the time looked out the window and said, "There's a dog in our garden eating the vegetables."  I went running out there to scare it, got up next to it, saw it was a GIGANTIC RODENT (WHICH HAS HISSING AT ME VIOLENTLY) and I turned around and screamed like a girly-man, beating a hasty retreat to the house.

It was  lot of fun.  There was a DJ (one of the kids) and dancing, some of the kids did some songs, as aprt of the "Ed Sullivan Show" there were 2 skits , one of a Honeymooners episode and one I Love Lucy and a recreation of some of the news stories of the 50's, The beginning of the Korean War,  Sputnick, Polio Vaccine, Brown vs Board of Ed, Nixon's Checker's speech, the Giant's winning the Pennant are a few that come to mind

We had a 50's trivia game (our table won so we all received a free  Rootbeer float or ice creamcone from the icecream parlor)

The dad of one of the kids is a professional singer specializing in songs of the 50's & 60's and he did a set for us.  The we finished up with Kareoke and dancing.. it was a wonderful night .. all this for aonly $5 a head--- and it included soda, chips, veggie platters, water, coffee and cake!

When the Vixdad  and I were first married we lived in an apartment that was the ground floor of a splt level and our landlord, a young single man , lived inteh rest of the house.  We were being overrun by stray cats which were mange ridden and nasty so the landlord decied to get a humane trap and catch a few of them and relocate them.

Wewer woken early in the morning by the girly man screams of said LL when he realized he had caught a possum. By time Vixdad wnet out to see what teh ruckus was all about LL had started fillinga garbage pail with water, intending to dropped the trapped possum in a drown it

Vixdad objected strongly and offered to relocate the possum... he lined the back of our Hyundai Elantra with heavy duty trash backs lifted the a cage with a couple of dowels and transported Mr. Possum a few miles away to a large , extremely wooded state park

Back from The Brain.  A fantastic audience - loud, boisterous, and howling with laughter throughout, except for the times when certain cast members got sloppy or inaudible (if the audience can't hear the line they won't laugh - pretty simple).  I'm all about consistency in performance and I'm not necessarily fond of when people change up something that works into something that clearly doesn't.  I've given note after note about it, but, you know, it's the end of the run and I'm done.

Today, I ushered for a local ballet school's end-of-year showcase.  There were some good dancers, and a LOT of family members.

There was an older gentleman who asked if I knew a certain person from high school...I did.  It turns out that he was my friend's father!  I don't know how he (the father) recognized me, but he did!  Tom (my friend) was there, but I never got to say "hi."  When I saw him come into the theater, the show was about to start and he and a woman that he was with went right upstairs.  I was ushering in the orchestra level.  I don't even know if he saw me at all.  After the show, he left too quickly.  Oh, well.  And I don't know if Tom's father will tell him that he saw me.

After ushering, I came home for a short bit, changed my shirt and went to a local production of Lips Together, Teeth Apart.  I knew three of the four cast members, the director and the assistant director.  It was good.  Not incredible, but well done. :)

One real problem with LTTA was that they didn't seem to be used to laughter. :-\ The audience would laugh (appropriately) at what was happening, but the actors would just plow right through the dialogue.  Lines were lost throughout the show because of that.

One more thing about LTTA, the woman playing Chloe, my friend Lauren (who was in Nite of the Living Dead: The Musical! with me) incorrectly pronounced Frank Loesser's last name. :-X After the show, I asked if her pronunciation was a specific choice or did she (or everyone else involved in the show) just not know??  She said that she didn't know and no one corrected her.  She pronounced it "low-zer."  I told her that the correct pronunciation was "lesser" and she said that she'd change it for tomorrow's matinee.  It's also their last show.
