Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cuckoo, and now it is time for you to post until the Studio City Cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ANNEAL!
-
Welcome nine GUESTS.
-
Good morning, Mr. Singdaw!
-
Well, morning for you...for me it's that time when I'm awakened by cats, check the newspaper and go back to sleep.
-
Well hello there, DR Edisaurus! Was just catching up on last evening's postings.
-
In addition to the jazz clubs in Harlem that DR Jose mentioned, I also like Lucy's. If I'm in NY on a Monday night, I usually try to hit it and St. Nick's pub. You can often get a free dinner, too, if you get there on the early side. They seem to feed the musicians and anyone else who is around. (Sometimes I've paid, but even then, it's cheap, and usually involves chicken.)
-
I, too, spotted DR JoseSPiano in Cubby's latest video. It seems DR JoseSPiano is popping up all over the Internet these days! :)
-
How is your forearm?
-
Dr Jose will soon be the most popular personage on the world-wide interweb!
-
bk - don't expect to see any lessening of cell phone use while driving, even with the new law. New York and Connecticut both have had cell phone laws for years, yet every day I see many people doing just that.
-
How is your forearm?
Healing nicely, thank you! :)

There's also the Lenox Lounge...I'm never stayed for the music but have popped in a few times to show people the decor. Vintage art deco!

DR Ron Pulliam:
[1] Thank you for the Chocolate Pie recipe!!
[2] awfully nice springtime photo album you shared with us yesterday! :)
[3] sorry to read about that serious looking workplace accident.
[4] Thanks also for the DD sale code. :D

This is usually what happens at this time: my bg love cat comes and lays on my wrist, making it difficult to type. I pick him up and we g back to bed, where he snuggles up in spoon position with my DH.

DR Edisaurus - so cute! :)
-
I'm not thanking Ron for the code, because now I will be prompted to use it.
Well, actually, thank you, Ron! I gave away my copy of "Ociee Nash" to a little girl on Sunday, so now I can replace it for cheap. And I may get that 3rd Rock season 2 with the 3D episodes. And maybe FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS...
-
(http://munchies.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/village-of-the-damned-kids.jpg)
Well, I'll be damned if those aren't some cute children!
-
OK...too hard to type with one hand, so goodnight...errrr...morning. See you later, Sing!

And here is a shot of the children [well, a child] of the corn...

See you later, Sing!
Well I certainly hope so! :)

By the way - I had never heard of an aluminum "potato nail" before. I am intrigued.

These looklike the children from the remake. If memory serves me in the original the eyes glowed white. (Maybe because the film was in B & W. Not sure)

Are this pathetic producer's initials "RS"?

Wednesday morning greetings! It's NOT a beautiful day for driving to Cleveland. My departure is somewhat delayed as I'm letting a line of storms pass through before I leave.
I don't know why the sirens sounded late last night. The TV didn't indicate anything severe nearby, so I just went to bed. Slept OK, but didn't get up as early as I'd intended. Fortunately, I have all day to get to Cleveland - just have to be in my hotel lobby at 5:30pm for the field trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
-
Jerks at work!!
Why don't you just send them to Cleveland, DR Ben?
-
Good morning, DR JulieC40!
Looks like you already have more ideas than can be crammed into your NYC visit! :)
-
Well, this is very true. I know we won't get to do everything, but might as well be prepared. How are you today DR Singdaw? Where are you from exactly?
-
It looks like DR Singdaw has signed off. Well, if you come back, have a great day, hon. :)
-
Hi, DR Ginny! How are you today? Where are you from exactly?
-
I guess everyone took off. Will be back later.
-
'morning, DR JulieC40! Where am I from? Well, you'll be interested to know that I was born in Portland, Oregon! I grew up in Detroit and have lived 35 years now in Middletown, Ohio - just north of Cincinnati.
-
Oops, I haven't left yet. Where abouts in Portland did you live? Have you ever come back to visit here?
-
Ginny, I work over in the Pearl district, NW Portland, about a block North of Burnside.
-
We lived on NE Halsey, near Rose City Park. I was only 2 and a half when my dad was transferred, so don't remember much. I've only been back to Portland once, when I was 9. My husband and I were just talking the other day about someday taking a driving vacation to the Pacific Northwest.
-
OK, I'm gonna sign off, disconnect the computer, and head off to the North Coast. Don't know how much computer access I'll have, so might be E & T a bit for the next few days.
-
I know exactly where that is. I have pretty much lived here all my life. I was kind of the same way. Born in Sacramento, CA, but left before 2 years old so only remember the color of the carpet...white! :) Oh, you should! It is so beautiful here! I go to visit other places, which hasn't been much but I did get to go to Thailand about 1 1/2 years ago and was so happy to get home where it was green!
-
Well, I am leaving now. Headin' off to work! Nice chattin' with you, Ginny! Have a great day!
-
And the word of the day is: ANNEAL!
And The Song Of The Day Is: HARD HEARTED HANNAH

This was DR MBarnum's family's church portrait, n'est-ce-pas?
Good morning, all! I'm sleepng too late these days and that pisses me off. Today, more Brain surgery, the 42nd Street NYPL, and then a party to celebrate the release of a friend's first CD. I'm quite excited about it.
Beyond that, I have little to report. My wonderful sister-in-law Jo has joined MySpace to promote her beautiful quilting work, and since joining, she's become a computer wiz. She's now invaded my MySpace pages to redo them and I think she's doing an amazing job. Every other day when I check on them, she's gone crazy and done something to them. She's so great. I'm thinking about buying a bunch of current Broadway logo t-shirts and having her make a Broadway quilt that I could advertise for her. Her craftsmanship is quite wonderful.
So, more Brain surgery awaits.

Bruce, my friend:
I totally disagree with you about RAWHIDE. I've seen it a few times. It's quite suspenseful, has some interesting characters and surprising plot twists. Tyrone Power may not have been the ideal choice for a western, but he's supposed to be a "dude" in this picture, which explains his actions or lack thereof.
But, that's just my opinion.
::)
-
Well, for what it's worth - my dog loves rawhide! :D
-
Good morning!
I'm sure the A/C will come on today. It's going up to 93 this afternoon, and there is just no way to keep the house endurably cool. Well, June 4th isn't too bad to turn on the A/C.
-
re: people using cell phones while driving and the new laws.
I think it just takes time for people to stop. We have had the law here for a few months. Well there was a 3 month warning period. And i still saw people using their phones while driving. But i see less and less people each day.
-
I'm sure DR JEnnifer (and possibly others) will be watching MEN IN TREES tonight.
There is nothing on TV of interest for me tonight.
-
I plan right now to continue with HAWAII FIVE-O all afternoon and evening. I will probably watch an NCIS season 1 episode while I eat lunch, but otherwise, I'll be with Steve and Danno for most of the day.
At 10 tonight, I will watch IN PLAIN SIGHT recorded from Sunday night's premiere broadcast. It got very good ratngs, so unless it plummets in subsequent airings, looks like it'll be another hit for USA.
-
On tv tonight for me:
2 hours of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE
MEN IN TREES
LIFE (it is a part 1 of 2). I think it must be getting near the end!
-
I watch men FROM trees...
Does that count?
-
Ha, DR MattH i wrote my post before reading yours. :)
-
Has anybody heard anything about the new show on CBS tomorrow night? I think it's called SWINGTOWN. It was previewed in the local paper today. It's supposed to be raunchy (about swingers i guess).
Also, that new USA show (i think) IN PLAIN SIGHT (or something like that) will be starting here in 2 weeks. Did anybody watch it?
And MAD MEN is premiering here on sunday. Did anybody like that show? I'm not sure if it will be for me. But i heard it was quite good.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And the search for my checkbook will recommence shortly.
-
MAD MEN is a splendid series, very much worth watching (though I felt it went just a bit downhill in the last couple of episodes where I found myself losing interest).
SWINGTOWN is a burn-off series for CBS. They bought it and are burning off the episodes this summer with no intention of making any more. I'll be watching the horror anthology FEAR ITSELF tomorrow night which airs opposite SWINGTOWN.
-
DR Jennifer - As for "Mad Men"... I'm sure if you search the previous posts, you will find a few fans of the show here on HHW. ;)
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And the search for my checkbook will recommence shortly.
Look for it in the last place you'd ever leave it. My lost items almost always turn up in just such a place.

I'm heading down now to check the mail (surely the review copies are done for the week) and then start preparing lunch.

Hmmm... There's a bar in Chelsea called "Rawhide". Does that count for anything?
::)

Look for it in the last place you'd ever leave it. My lost items almost always turn up in just such a place.
The problem is is that I can't even think of the last place I'd ever leave it. I did find my box of blank/new checks, so if I have to start a new batch of them, well, I can always do that. In the meantime, the search - and the mystery - continues.

I loved MAD MEN and am looking forward to its new season here in July!
-
We are in the Mercury retrograde until June 19 - so electronic problems and travel delays abound....
-
I just got the new bio of actress Coral Browne, who was truly what the French would call formidable. She and gay companion Charles Gray (of Rocky Horror) were in the opening night of Peter Brook's production of Seneca's version of Oedipus with Sir John Gielgud and Irene Worth at the Old Vic. At the end of the play, a dixieland band played "Yes, We Have No Bananas" as a 15-foot tall golden phallus was brought onstage. While the audience sat stunned, Coral whispered to her friend loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Its no one we know."

Yes DR TCB - it was indeed the This Is Your Life Edsel that Frances was pulled from after careening off the highway during THE VISIT.
This was the last hurrah for the car.....she purchased a lovely 1966 Oldsmobile that was soon history after being driven through a stack of old tires behind a gas station, over the storage building next door, and crashing into the front of the town jailhouse in Nashville. :o

And that's what makes horse racing. I understood he was a dude, but that makes for very uninteresting drama when every other character but your leading man takes action. I mean he never even has that moment when he takes charge and stops being a dude and becomes a hero. For a film of its era and with Mr. Power, I'd say that's fairly radical. The film runs under ninety minutes and seemed endless to me, and also Mr. Hugh Marlowe just doesn't do it for me as a bad guy.

I actually have a vague memory of when I last used my checkbook - to write my rent check for last month. -Which happens to be basically the only reason I use my check book now. And the reason why I need to find it now. I'm hoping it will turn up during my searching this afternoon.

Some day I hope to be a chorine.

That's going to take an awful lot of snipping.

elmore, "that old queen", after some years of inactivity, has somehow gotten his foot (or some extremity) in the door somewhere and is getting them to spend lots and lots of money. And he's been trolling messageboards and asking people to e-mail him or call him so she can justify everything. I don't know any other person who does this sort of thing who has ever done that - ever.

Hello, DR JulieC40! I'm doing well and having a great day so far.
I live in Harrison, NY - in Westchester County. A mere 20 miles North of downtown Manhattan. :)
-
I saw half of In Plain Sight so far and I really enjoyed it. We did purchase tickets to Gypsy and Xanadu for our trip the end of July. SO excited! JOSE, you have been a wealth of information. I'll keep on visiting and throwing in my comments as well. The CORN on the cob with the president...what I wanna do is just WHAT is he going to do with that thing? He has a really determined look on his face! :)
-
DR Singdaw, So you're not really too far from Manhattan then, huh? DR Jose, do you any how safe it is to be in the Harlem area in the evening...ya know, 2 ladies trying to running around town and such?

DR SINGDAW - the aluminum potato nail is a necessity if you want to bake your potatoes on the barbecue....or just want to them to get done a bit quicker in the regular oven.

I thought she was dead.
Be nice, now, Larry. Don't incur the possibility of visitations from the ghost of an angry old Queen!
-
And sniping, too, apparently-

Leaving the door open for some snarking, no doubt!
-
I don't think we've ever discussed it here. In any case... Some of the faces do look familiar to me.
Would it help if we held a lineup at the Reservoir?
-
My question for ASK BK day.....is there any movie you have seen that you were unable to guess the ending....or the ending was such a surprise or twist that it caught you by surprise?
-
The only old queen I know of is in England.
-
And that's what makes horse racing.
It's so odd how differently we can see the same films. I thought "Rawhide" extremely taut and well-paced. It moved quickly, and I thought Power and Hayward a terrific team. Since the escapees thought Hayward and the infant were his family, Power's character had to be extra-cautious and less foolhardy than so-called heroes we see in films today.
I thought he was probably more true to what most of us would be like in such a situation.
-
Someone posted a rather negative post about a certain CD, and guess who was right there, all defensive, saying the recording had a 60 piece band (!) and telling this person he was on crack and that his remarks were slanderous and that you never know who's reading the board. I replied "Oh, yes we do." And I asked the simple question as to why you'd have a 60 piece band for a show that originally had less than twenty in its pit and is orchestrated specifically for one violin. I then said that the real "slander" would now start and be hurled in my direction, just as it was on the other board until I had it removed. We'll see if he dares do it, because if he does I'm afraid I shall have to be a very bad boy.
-
The only old queen I know of is in England.
Oh, DearReaderLaura....just look around. I'm sure you'll spot one or two...here or there...lurking...sipping through a straw....mulling over a scarf in the men's section...gazing at women's shoes through a window...or burning hair in a salon.
-
DR Singdaw, So you're not really too far from Manhattan then, huh? DR Jose, do you any how safe it is to be in the Harlem area in the evening...ya know, 2 ladies trying to running around town and such?
Hmm... "Safety" is sort of relative. At least to me. There have been a couple of times where if I'm coming back late from a gig or a night out, and the trains seem to be running on a skip-stop schedule, I'll just go ahead and keep walking up Broadway from 116th to 145th.
Just be sensible. I will say that West Harlem seems to be a bit safer than East Harlem, and since 125th Street is the main crosstown drag, it's always busy. If you do start to feel a bit uneasy, then just hail a cab - or one of the numerous gypsy cabs - and head back to midtown.
And speaking of midtown... Midtown also has it's share of safety issues - mainly pickpockets - so, again, just be be aware and sensible.
-
We'll see if he dares do it, because if he does I'm afraid I shall have to be a very bad boy.
Not you.
I've never seen it!
;)
-
We have a picture near the phone of the queen of England with a corgi.
A young lady visiting one day went up to Skip and asked "Is that Fred's mom?"
-
Would it help if we held a lineup at the Reservoir?
I think that would only confuse matters. At the very least, make them more complicated.
-
DR Jose, Thanks for the info. I will definitely keep that in mind.
-

Hmm... Well, according to the liner notes, it was not a "60 piece band". It was a 60 piece orchestra... In Bratislava, Slovakia... The Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra, in fact.
-
DR Jose, Ya know anyone that can get us back stage passes to Gypsy! :)) (wink, wink, nudge, nudge!) J/K!
-
DR Jose, Ya know anyone that can get us back stage passes to Gypsy! :)) (wink, wink, nudge, nudge!) J/K!
Well, actually, I do. :) However, that whole stage door scene at the St. James is a bit crazy, and with the way the backstage of the St. James is set up, it's not always the most convenient or exciting place to hang out after the show.
-
DR Jose, You really do know someone? Mmm...we don't care if its boring. It would be a thrill for my sister! She has done so much theater in the Portland area and being around backstage she would think she died and went to heaven even if we didn't meet anyone. :)
-
Dr JOSE, We are going on Wed, July 23rd to the 2:00 p.m. showing, about 4 rows from the front in the center. Are those good seats? I hope so. Am I being too abnoxious? If I am, just tell me to be a good girl and I will then sit & heel and try to be good. (no promises, though). :)

Trust me, you'd be better off stage-dooring at the St. James. With the way the stage is set up for Gypsy, you really don't see much of anything or anyone while you're in the public areas backstage. Basically, all you'd see is one long hallway, one stairwell, and another hallway. I always have a better time waiting at the stage door for friends, rather than going inside.

Those are good seats. Almost great seats in fact. -And since the orchestra is on stage, you'll be within spitting distance of the actors.
-
DR Jose, Okay, I'll take your word for it. So the Stage Door is the way to go then, huh? That's perfectly fine. I have found out in life, if you don't ask for things (or hint at them), they won't come to you on your own, ya know? Life is too short! You are such a doll! :)

DERBrucer, Only that they are THE Best Chocolate Truffles EVER made! They are awesome and one is not to far from where I live. They are a bit expensive though. I think one truffle can be like $2.50 to $3.00 per piece. Can't afford those all the time! They ARE wonderful though!
-
DR MBARNUM is on his way to the center of celebrity - Memphis Tennessee, is he not?
DR JENNIFER - MAD MEN is about the men who work in a New York/Madison Avenue advertising agency in 1960 - although the new season starting this year jumps ahead a couple of years. It concentrates on one man and his family and a younger newly married man - but all of the stars get a chance to shine a bit.

I never thought I'd see the day:
I not only watched a TV trailer, I rewound the DVR twice to see it over again:
THE CLOSER (shot in NYC I presume) - "Everybody has something to confess"!
Really fun.
Must be Amy.

Those are good seats. Almost great seats in fact. -And since the orchestra is on stage, you'll be within spitting distance of the actors.
More importantly, they'll be within spitting distance of YOU!
I sat not more than four feet away from both Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel the first time I saw "Wicked" at San Francisco's Curran Theater. While I was seated to the right of the stage, both actresses had many "moments" right in front of me.
And I do believe I got spritzed a couple of times. ;D
-
Hmm... Well, according to the liner notes, it was not a "60 piece band". It was a 60 piece orchestra... In Bratislava, Slovakia... The Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra, in fact.
I have no doubt it's a sixty-piece band - my question was why on earth would you want such a band for a show that originally had less than twenty in its pit and was orchestrated for a very Broadway brassy feel, with just one solo violin? Then again, other than cheaping out, why would you want a Broadway brassy score played by the Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava, Slovakia?
-
DR elmore - I just checked both of their bedrooms, so... ;)
I actually have a vague memory of when I last used my checkbook - to write my rent check for last month. -Which happens to be basically the only reason I use my check book now. And the reason why I need to find it now. I'm hoping it will turn up during my searching this afternoon.
Did you check with HustlersRUs? I hope you're not making phone calls and saying "the checkbook's open, send one over!"
-
Just played through the entire Nudie score without too many clams - I'm still so used to the movie arrangements of those songs, and I'm trying like crazy to get my head in a different place, because there's lots more fun that could be had. Whether I'll do it in time for the reading is another story.

Whilst browing in the local "special foods" emporium, I came upon a travelling anvil candy saleman; he was touting product from Oregon:

Best damn truffle I ever ate.

Have you ever heard of Rogers Chocolates (http://www.rogerschocolates.com/)? They're a Canadian chocolatier in Victoria, B.C. Ummmmmmmmmmmmm. The creams are fantabulous.

I've also been enjoying the reruns of The Big Bang Theory - Jim Parsons is the best physical comic since Art Carney! And the show has an original theme song to enjoy!

Be nice, now, Larry. Don't incur the possibility of visitations from the ghost of an angry old Queen!

....And I'm wondering if that's one of the "house orchestras" that Time-Life uses for some of their other recording compilations. The Istropolis Phil was also used to record that marionette production of The Sound of Music (http://www.marionetten.at/marionetten/marionetten/sound-of-music) - that happened to be conducted by another Larry, Larry Blank.

As for Moonstruck Chocolates... They are good chocolates, and are sold through various retailers throughout the country - Whole Foods carries some of their offerings. They also have Chocolate Cafes (http://moonstruckchocolates.com/ChocolateCafes.aspx) in some cities. There is one in DR Jeanne's area in the Tysons Galleria.
-I also seem to remember visiting one in Chicago the last time I was there, but there is no longer a Chicago location listed on their website.

Yes, Larry Blank conducted complete recordings of SOUND OF MUSIC and ALLEGRO for Rodgers & Hammersten in Bratislava. The marionette soundtrack was taken from the complete recording, which has yet to be cast, I believe. It may be the same band, smae studio, and the liaison may have been indeed a mutual friend of the Old queen and mine. While it's financially less expensive to records in Bratislava, I doubt R&H's reasons for recording there are the same as the old queen's.

My husband and I were just talking the other day about someday taking a driving vacation to the Pacific Northwest.

DR Ron Pulliam - I like Rogers Chocolates too. I first tried them a couple of years ago when I was in Victoria, BC, one summer for the music festival, and a friend of mine sends me a small box of their Ice Wine Truffles from time to time.

Greetings from Ohio's North Coast! I'm in the Cleveland outpost of DR Ben's employer, enjoying their 16th floor view of Lake Erie.

I cannot believe the lousy "Saving Grace" is still running.
I gave up on it, too, and it killed me to do so because I *LOVE* Joel Gretsch, but I just couldn't stand its pretentions.
-
I began my afternoon viewing with another NCIS episode from season 1. An exciting episode about a sniper killing off Marine recruiters. I enjoyed it.
-
I then watched 4 1/2 episodes of HAWAII FIVE-O. One involved a punchy ex-boxer (played by Moses Gunn) who smashes the hand of a promising young fighter (to "save" him from the ring), and then the mod puts out a contract on the old guy. Nice twist at the end.
-
Another involved the beginnings of gangland war between the Japanese, the Chinese, the Samoan, and Korean gangs on the island. Only a fair episode, one of the weakest in the set thus far.
-
An ecology fanatic begins killing people he thinks are responsible for ruining the beauty of Hawaii. A kind of confused ending but pretty exciting until the end.
-
The episode I started and only got halfway through features Hume Cronyn returning to a role he performed in season 3, a master of disguise out to pilfer money from some drug smugglers. These episodes have a lighter tone than most FIVE-O episodes.
Paul Frees is dubbing the main bad guy's voice, and the drug runner is being played by character actor Lane Bradford.
-
I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No gay boys today, but they do return tomorrow.
-
And I finally turned on the A/C. The house was 80 degrees when I went downstairs, and that was just too warm for comfort. The A/C has been popping on and off all afternoon, so it's REALLY warm outside today.
-
That last sentence isn't a euphemism for "I think I'll slit my wrists", is it?

No. when I get stymied and things aren't working out, a diversion is always welcome. I now have four reams of copy paper, one ream of 11x17 24lb paper for score paper, 20 blank CDs and I'm very happy.

My Niece, DR Samantha, and I stage doored at Legally Blonde (her first Broadway Show) and we had a blast. Everyone posed for photos, gave her autographs laughed and laughed. We had a blast

For people like me who missed Season One, there is a marathon of all the episodes on July 20th prior to the Season Two premiere on July 27th.
I think I'll check this out again, also. I watched the first episode when it was orginally on, but I think I was in rehearsals and didn't keep track of it. :)

I am not having a very productive week this week. I guess as hard as I have been working that was bound to happen.

elmore, I, too miss the Brain in Manhattan. However, I certainly don't miss Paul Downs Colaizzo in any way, shape, or form. I'm afraid he is on my "F" list for reasons too many to go into. Our current Rod is the best we've had. He'll be reading the role of George Brenner in Nudie.
-
I entered a few more fixes into the Nudie script, when through the whole thing to double check spacings and such, and then I took it to Staples for Xeroxing.
-
I then had to ship a few packages, then pick up mail, and now I am back home.
-
I gotta tell you.

The interesting thing about the "old queen" is that he comes on and posts as if he WEREN'T the old queen, praising his new recording and bashing another cast album. But it's so easy to tell it's him and in his next post he all but gives it away. And then one of his cronies, who posts under the name Without A Trace (indeed) comes on and says, "I just talked to castprod and I'm posting what he told me to say" and then goes on to justify all the things people are complaining about.
I have laid off this creep for years, but when he bashed me over at Broadwayworld, and then did so repeatedly in every thread he could, that was it. Slander, indeed. This guy is, in MY opinion, one of the biggest jerks who ever lived. Oh, the stories I could tell - and they are plentiful. I'm sure elmore could match me, too.

Is it located right next to "The Mine Shaft"?
And when did you ever go to the Mine Shaft?

I just got the new bio of actress Coral Browne, who was truly what the French would call formidable. She and gay companion Charles Gray (of Rocky Horror) were in the opening night of Peter Brook's production of Seneca's version of Oedipus with Sir John Gielgud and Irene Worth at the Old Vic. At the end of the play, a dixieland band played "Yes, We Have No Bananas" as a 15-foot tall golden phallus was brought onstage. While the audience sat stunned, Coral whispered to her friend loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Its no one we know."
Wasn't she married to Vincent Price?

I don't think we've ever discussed it here. In any case... Some of the faces do look familiar to me.

That was a danger if you sat in the front few rows of the Atlanta Symphony when Robert Shaw was conducting. Great conductor, but the man could sweat up a storm!

I know---but it has enough fans to be renewed. (I'm not one...shhhhhh....)

I believe so, based on an old skit where someone imperosnated Vincent Price and would always refer to "My wife---the actress Coral Brown."

Good Evening!
So... I went ahead and headed down to the Virgin Megastore to see my friend at the "Annie - 30th Anniversary Production" recording singing. -Or something like that. There were a lot of familiar face behind the ropes - or whatever you call those retractable "barriers". Kathie Lee Gifford, Andrea McArdle, Conrad John Shuck, Shelly Burch, Martin Charnin, Thomas Meehan, etc. Alas, it didn't seem that there were that many people in front of the ropes. However, since there were at any given time, eight to ten people signing and posing for pictures, the line didn't move all that fast.
I did bring my CD with me, but I didn't feel like waiting in line to get it signed. Instead, I spent some good catch up time with my friend who appears on the recording. I also let him look at my CD since none of the ensemble members had received copies of the CD (yet?). He got a kick out of some of the comic-book style renderings of himself and his castmates in the liner notes.
-
A 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts just opened near my apartment - it's actually just a 30-second walk away. I was in the mood for something cold and caffeinated, so I decided to give the new location a try and ordered one of their Coffee Coolatas. Well, I think the staff still has some things to learn about the products they have to make.
When I was handed the cup, it looked awfully dark, but it was icy and slushy. I took a sip... YOW! I realized that they had left out the cream and/or milk, so all I was drinking was the frozen coffee base! It was like drinking quadruple-brewed-strength espresso. -Even my stomach immediately seized up for a second. I would have turned around and asked for another, but I sort of figured it wasn't worth the bother. And the two sips I had before I dumped the rest in the sink most definitely fulfilled my caffeine requirement for this time of day.

I suppose that is true, but when there is not a single fan (rabid or otherwise) anywhere in sight waiting to meet Ms. LuPone, it did seem to be a bit of overkill (pardon that expression).

Here's the closing paragraph from a music review that appeared in today's NY Times...
Tracing the Arc of Beethoven’s Career in One Night (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/04/arts/music/04mann.html?_r=1&ref=music&oref=slogin)
Beethoven institutes are a lovely idea, and no doubt Mannes’s students learn a lot. But what the school should offer is master classes in concert etiquette. At a moment in the G minor Sonata when Mr. Sauer was artfully demonstrating how dramatic the silence between chords can be, a cellphone rang. And in my immediate vicinity, no fewer than three institute students checked and responded to text messages during the performance; each, in fact, waited until the music had begun to illuminate her cellphone.
-I wonder if the folks at Mannes will be posting a copy of this in LARGE PRINT on the student bulletin boards. ;)
-
I am fascinated by this stage door business. This has only been happening for the last few years, this rabid stage door crap with mostly crazed teenies. I mean, six years ago there wasn't anything like this EVER and I mean for the biggest stars. I think, once again, these awful chat boards can share at least some of the blame, where these little children congregate and talk about who they met, who they took their picture with, whose autograph they got - it feeds on itself and now it's the "thing to do."
-
I suppose that is true, but when there is not a single fan (rabid or otherwise) anywhere in sight waiting to meet Ms. LuPone, it did seem to be a bit of overkill (pardon that expression).
It's all on a timetable - and partially unionized now. They go up no later than a half hour before the curtain comes down, and are not taken down until the stage door man gives the all clear... Regardless of whether or not anyone is waiting.
-
I tried very hard to walk without looking at anything today, but when I saw this lovely art, I knew you'd all want to see it:

I'm back from the CD release party, and a swell time it was. My talented friend Matthew Brookshire is a wonderful song writer, a bit of bluegrass, a bit of gospel, a bit of Rufus Wainright. and absolutely wonderful. I saw a lot of friends: Curtis, Tom (several of Matthew's collaborators on the wonderful musical-comedy-in-progress FOR THE LOVE OF TIFFANY), Tom's boyfriend Travis, Matthew's violinist Erika, who's a delightful performer. I thought I was coming to a release party for this CD:

It's a CD I really like, but the event was for his 2nd CD, which I bought at the party. I really like the songs, and I recommend Mr Brookshire to all of you.

Matthew and his songwriting partner Curtis Moore wrote the songs for the Todd Solondz film PALINDROMES, so you may have already heard some of his music. The new CD will be available at CDBaby in about a week, so if you're interested, give it a listen.

Singdaw, thanks for the laugh... I have had a LONG day! :)

From what I've seen people are very respectful at the stage door and the actors who want to sign/pose for photos etc do that and others just leave. I don't see the harm in it. There was a cast member in Legally Blonde who had her first performance the night we were there. She was smiling as she signed autographs and when we politely asked if she would pose for a photo because it was Sam's first broadway show, she was very excited and said it was her first performance on Broadway and we were the first to ever ask that.
There was a group of young girls on a trip to see the show, but neither they or anyone elase were "crazed"

Love the new avvie TCB!
Thanks GEorge for the dVD!

We have a picture near the phone of the queen of England with a corgi.
A young lady visiting one day went up to Skip and asked "Is that Fred's mom?"
A since the young lady in question has family members that are subjects of said Queen she has been teased about that!!!
-
I have also done stage door waiting on a few acts I have seen and most have been very gracious about signing. It was how I got to meet The CHieftains.
-
Still would like to meet Matt Ashford....
Harrison Ford.....
Meryl Streep.... Helen Mirren and a number of others
-
Hello vixmom! Long time no see... I hope all is well with you, vixdad and the vixter!

Is anyone watching Top Chef?

TOP CHEF SPOILER
I thought Lisa's line about the others not congratulating her was on target, but from the voiceovers at the beginning, it seems clear that they were surprised to see who went.
Oh, and in some shots, doesn't Lisa bring to mind a younger Rosie O'Donnell?
-
Is anyone watching Top Chef?
I am, Fred! I hate that bitch Lisa. She brings out new dimensions on the word hostile. I wouldn't congratulate her either; she's evil.
-
Are spoiler warnings needed for Top Chef as a general rule?
-
A nice long evening with McGarrett and Danno. I guess I got about 4 1/2 episodes watched. I have 5 1/2 episodes left in the set.
Wo Fat was back with such a complicated scheme that it took a two-part story to tell the entire thing. Naturally, he got away.
-
I am the process of reclaiming the puter room....
I have a box of piano music, song books and instruction books. They are in varying conditions.
Some classical, Fiddler on the Roof, Journey, and collections of pop and country music from the 1980s. Some children's music and christmas music.
There are is one instruction book for guitar, several for drum and a lot for piano
-
So many guest stars in these episodes. In the last completed episode I watched, Tim O'Connor and DOnald Pleasance were the guests.
-
I picked the three pieces and one book I wanted. "I want to teach the world to sing"
I kept a few things that could be adapted for C and D whistle
-
And in the episode that I only got halfway through, Ed Flanders and Barry Sullivan were among the guest stars. Sullivan's playing a billionaire who's allergic to people.
-
As for "Top Chef"...
The comment about congratulating someone for the Bronze was also sort of on the money for me too, actually. And, frankly, I have a feeling that if the shoe was on the other foot, Lisa would not have congratulated the one who did not get sent home. -Of course, I have a feeling the producers kept her in order to add some tension to the final episode.
-
TOP CHEF SPOILER
Oh, and in some shots, doesn't Lisa bring to mind a younger Rosie O'Donnell?
Is that because she's a lesbian?
;D
-
I ended my evening by watching IN PLAIN SIGHT. I liked SOME of the characters, but I didn't think the plot was all that great. I'd say it was a mediocre opening episode. Didn't have the crackle and smarts of BURN NOTICE and certainly not the humor of THE CLOSER. But I'll watch a few more episodes to see if they find a groove and settle into it.
I'm not going to like that sister at all: whiny, spoiled, and a cokehead. Ugh!
-
I don't think MR BK answered my question of the day. And now he is at THE OUTER LIMITS.
-
I like to watch TOP CHEF, but I opted out tonight when they started hacking on the pig carcasses.
A person can only take so much.
-
I am LATE LATE LATE to the party, but I saw THERE WILL BE BLOOD today. I liked it.....good performances, and I really liked the score.
I know it has been discussed here often - quite some time ago....but I will just stand on the PRO side of it in case it comes up again.
-
I am watching GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN on FUSE starring Miss Sarah Jessica Parker, Lee Montgomery, and Helen Hunt.
-
Carcass Carcass is no longer just a hotel in Vegas, i guess.

Hmm.... Maybe THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp9Ra2ov25c) is the real reason that the revival of A Chorus Line is closing.

Many tornados tonight, luckily they were in southwest Iowa. There isn't much in southwest Iowa so I will be surprised if there is much damage
-
Tomorrow they are predicting tornados here. I must remember to get a transistor radio down the basement.
-
I am sleepy. I didn't bring work home last night or tonight, so I must sleep.

Speaking of tv's:

This frigging Sylvania is still not fixed. Now Funai, after 5 months of screwing up the repair orders, wants to take it to Torrance, CA to their shop FOR TWO MONTHS to have it fixed. I have flat-out refused. I asked a lawyer friend tonight if she knows if there's any kind of consumer protection ordinance in the ORS that dictates once a consumer has made a good faith attempt to get something fixed that's within warranty if the remedy then becomes the discretion of the consumer. My friend thought indeed there is, but she gave me a consumer law expert to call tomorrow. If there is such a law on the books here, I'm going to demand a new television. Once it is here I will send this defective unit to them (at their expense of course).

California High School Valedictorian to Be Deported
Tuesday , June 03, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. —
The valedictorian at Fresno's Bullard High School won't be attending college in the United States this fall because he's scheduled to be deported.
Arthur Mkoyan's 4.0 grade-point average qualified him to enter one of the state's top universities. But the 17-year-old and his mother have been ordered back to Armenia after their last appeal for asylum failed.
The family fled from what used to be part of the Soviet Union and has been seeking asylum since 1992.
So, having invested 12 years of public-funded education, we turn out an honor student to fly to Armenia and dump on the tarmac!

Jose, how far is Levains from Juilliard? A freind of mine is attending a coupleof classes there this summer before attending grad school at U of Iowa.
-
I highly recommended Levains to her...
-
Clara has a beautiful voice and she has worked very hard....
-
I want to ask a question about Nudie but I dont want to embarrass myself ..
Embarrassed? On this board? Ask away.
-
Cilla, of course there are exceptions to the stage door madness. You have no idea what goes on - people doing stage door when they haven't even seen that performance, doing it ten or twenty times - all you need to do is read the chat boards.
-
Jrand - I didn't see your question, I guess - what was it?
-
Welcome fifteen GUESTS. Any record producers out there? Speaking of record producers, there's a thread about Lolita, My Love on one of the chat boards (an older thread). Someone bumped it up today and I'd made a post in it about a year ago telling the true story of why a recording didn't happen. I was going to do it back in 2001 - had a deal in principle with Liza Lerner, had a cast, everything - and then she called and told me some other "producer" had gone around her to John Barry and had convinced Mr. Barry that he was going to do it, and it really muddied up the works and she could do nothing about it. I warned her that this was this guy's m.o. and that the recording would, most likely, not happen. Needless to say, thanks to his interference, it didn't. Someone responded to the post, asking my casting ideas - but all my posts have been removed - his response (about the casting) is still there, but not my posts. So, I just posted again. And if they remove that, I'll post it again. This guy is like a little two-year-old - he complains to the moderators of the board, crying slander, and they ALLOW IT. And yet his specious comments about me, which included my NAME, stayed on that board for a year - I never mention this yokel by name because frankly to mention his name would make me want to vomit on the ground.
As you know, I finally made such a stink with Mr. C. Brockman, that those inflammatory postings were removed.
-
Make that eighteen GUESTS.
-
And frankly, if it ever happens again, I shall tell all my wonderful stories right here at haineshisway.com, which I feel will soon be the most popular site on all the Internet. More people will see those stories here than anywhere else. I'm sure between elmore and me we could keep everyone in stitches for days.
-
Very logey right now.
-
I did end up watching a couple of episodes of Outer Limits. I didn't really appreciate the show when it first aired - I was too much a Twilight Zone freak and I didn't like uncouth interlopers treading on that territory - but boy do I appreciate it now.
-
So, let me get this straight - this whole stupid Cubby Bernstein thing is a campaign for Xanadu to win the Tony? Have I got that right? Done by the same company, Spotco, that won the Tony for Avenue Q? If this sort of thing is what it takes to win Tony Awards, then they should just stop giving them because it's just turned into one big stupid marketing ploy - the most money, the cleverest wins - nothing to do with the show anymore, just bombarding the Internet and newsfeeds with stuff - if this works, all I can say is what a sad day for theater. I mean, if Xanadu is the show that should win the Tony, then trust that the show itself will speak for itself, just like all the other shows, none of which are stooping to this sort of crap.
