Listening to Ye Olde iPod - playing endless Billy Goldenberg scores (I was given about twenty CDs' worth of his TV music) - currently playing, his score for the pilot of Night Gallery.

Also, if you want an absolutely stunning CD listen, do pick up Urubu by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with orchestrations by Claus Ogerman - what a CD!  Absolutely brilliant - especially the track Saudade do Brasil.  Stunning symphonic writing with female choir.

Speaking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, I can't remember what channel it was on, but a couple of weeks ago, there was a TV special from 1968, "A Man and His Music +Ella +Jobim" starring Frank Sinatra.  I'd heard recordings of Jobim, but I'd never seen him on TV.  It was a very good hour-long concert.  I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Frank's singing on this and both Ella and Jobim were, of course, very good, also. :)

On the other hand, the eating has been pretty good around here of late.  Tuesday we supped on roast chicken breasts and risotto.  Wednesday we dined on sweet and sour pork and fried rice.  Last night, braised short beef ribs and fingerling potatoes had us salivating.

I don't know what I'll be doing for tonight's repast, but Saturday we'll be attending the joint birthday party of the grandlads, and der Brucer's daughter will be cooking.

Which means that whatever I cook tonight had better be fantastic, just in order to tide us over until Sunday.

It's not as funny as it sounds.  Dang it.   :P

And tonight, on Doctor Who, David, Catherine and Freema (aka the Doctor, Donna and Martha) will be joined by Georgia Moffett as Jenny, in a tale entitled "The Doctor's Daughter".

As it happens, Ms. Moffett is the real life daughter of Peter Davison, who was the fifth actor to play the Doctor.  So she really is the Doctor's Daughter!

(And, rumour has it, Ms. Moffett is currently dating Mr. Tennant (aka David), which somehow has an incestuous ring to it.  My, my, my!)

Good morning, all! I was tired and I slept quite late. The weather's cooled down and the humidity appears to have dropped, so I'm rather happy. I may do a week's worth of laundry today, but I have a bit more Brain surgery as well.

Still no word on the Daniel Rodriguez situation, so I'm not thinking the job is going to happen; it's fine, given that I've got 2 charts to finish for Kip Wilborn along with the Brain and Victor Herbert and his shows. The goal for the weekend is to finish up what I can and gear up for estimated IRS payment next weekend, and that leads to a rant: what the hell is going on in the IRS minds? April 15's payment may be complicated as well with other IRS payments, and June 15 is two months later, then September 15 is three months later, and then the January 15 is four months later. hy the hell can't estimated payments be April, July, October and January, every four months? What with the IRS, my health insurance quarterly payment, and the semi-annual life insurance payment I'm up the proverbial fuckin creek!

TOD:
DVD:  Several BBC Shakespeares, Johann strauss' DER ZIGEUNERBARON
CD: Matthew Brookshire, The Brain from Planet X, Offenbach, several New Amsterdam Theatre Company productions
VCR: short films about office life

I actually got up this morning and got chores done so early that I had time to watch CLASSE TOUS RISQUES this morning. Excellent character study. A little choppy in the script department but it's so watchable that it doesn't matter.

I had never seen this before, and I'll look forward to watching it again soon.

Of course, there are bonus features I'll be watching this afternoon and evening.

I'm up, I'm up.  Had to have an early conversation with publishing people - the gal who was handling the new book (my regular guy for the last four books got promoted to a different department) up and quit a week ago without letting me know, so no one has gotten back to me in a week (obviously she wasn't answering e-mails), so they've assigned a new guy, a supervisor, actually, and we had a nice chat this morning.  He'll be getting everything at some point next week.  I think for this book, we're going to not do a separate website, but we'll put it in the book section of the Kritzerland site - in case you hadn't noticed, all the books have been moved over there.  Easier to have everything in one place, thought I.  Also, as always, there will be a free fun special thing for those who preorder from there.

WHOA!

I've been chatting with a friend who lives down in Fairfax.  Apparently, they had some pretty strong storms down there on Wednesday, along with a few tornados reported in some counties.  He's home today since his office is still without power... And his office is just a few blocks from my parents' old house!

-And I just checked in with another friend who was online right now, and, sure enough, she's currently living out of her office - and gym -  since her neighborhood and house are still without power.

The funny thing is is that I called my brothers yesterday, and they didn't mention anything about storms.  I guess they were spared the brunt of the high winds and rains.

I think i get annoyed every year. But they feature some people really heavily in their original auditions, show them in vegas. And then they never make it. Yet person after person who i have never seen/or do not remember get through.

I think the end was quite something (with the 2 girls facing elimination). But i found myself disappointed again, that so many favorites did not go through.

Today is NATIONAL DONUT DAY (http://theguide.latimes.com/events-and-festivals/latcl-national-donut-day-event)

Quote
Celebrated the first Friday in June, National Donut Day honors that sweet, deep-fried ball of joy known as the doughnut. (Probably) invented and brought to the Unites States of American by European immigrants in the late 1700s or early 1800s, doughnuts have achieved widespread appeal as a snack food for their unique marriage of starch, sugar and fat. Whether it's plain-raised, buttermilk, old fashioned, a maple bar, and apple fritter, ajelly donut, a French cruller, or Homer Simpson's iconic pink-iced, rainbow-sprinkled version, it's all good on National Donut Day.

And next time...  You could always go the kabob/kebab route.  Just cut the chicken breast into small pieces, put them on skewers... They will cook in no time - with no pre-boiling!  And/or you could pound the chicken breasts thin, in order to shorten their cooking time too.

OK.

Although, I have to wonder if the combined cooking time - boiling and grilling - would have been the same as just grilling?

;)

Grilling is pretty passive cooking.  You place the meat on the grill.  Leave it alone for a couple of minutes.  Turn it over.  Leave it on the grill for a few more minutes.  Serve.

DR Jose, i don't really get why you put that smiley face after your spoiler comment last night (re: DR Elmore's post).  I'm not saying that DR Elmore meant to spoil.  But i don't get why anyone would post (i'm assuming the winners name) in a show that was just airing.

It's because, DR Jennifer, some of us leap without thinking. But I don't get why you post a lot of your comments either! ;)

I went on a 60s-70s tv theme frenzy yesterday at YouTube.  I cannot believe how much stuff is available there.  I also can't believe how many fantastic themes there were, especially in the 60s (it seems the great themes started to taper off in the 70s somewhat, or maybe I just stopped watching television in that decade).  Rugolo, Grusin, Fielding--I tell you, so much great music and each in about 60 seconds!

Grilling is pretty passive cooking.  You place the meat on the grill.  Leave it alone for a couple of minutes.  Turn it over.  Leave it on the grill for a few more minutes.  Serve.

My son-in-law makes it more an action sport - he keeps fipping the burgers and pressing down with his spatula to force out all that nasty juice - no runny mess on the plate.

He presents a lovely gray crumbly burger that sits neatly atop a cool, untoasted bun. There is usually lots of ketchup and mayo (I bring my own onion!)

WASHINGTON POST (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/29/AR2008052903275.html)

Quote

A Requiem: Songs That Made the Hit Parade . . .

Guys Like Them They Had It Made

By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 1, 2008; M05

Earle Hagen and Alexander Courage, who died days apart last week, were maestros of a musical genre that faded some years before they did. Hagen and Courage composed TV theme music, those signature snippets that sent Pavlovian signals to viewers.

It's fair to say they don't make TV theme composers like them anymore. In fact, it's fair to say they don't make many TV theme composers of any kind anymore. The TV theme song, while not gone, is ailing. Indeed, if TV theme songs had a theme song these days, it would be a single descending pennywhistle note.

Hagen, 88 at the time of his death, wrote some of the most memorable and beloved tunes of no more than a minute in length. He is perhaps best known for his themes to "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Andy Griffith Show" (that's him on the soundtrack, whistling). He also wrote a bunch of the better themes from the 1960s and early '70s -- arguably the Golden Years of the form -- including those for "I Spy," "That Girl," "Mod Squad," and "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."

Courage, also 88, was less prolific, but his name will endure as the author of the "Star Trek" theme, which has perhaps the most famous four-note opening since Beethoven's Fifth.
TV themes, great and not-so, used to abound. At their best (think "Gilligan's Island," "The Brady Bunch," "Fresh Prince of Bel Air"), they did more than just worm into your ear and settle there for a lifetime. They introduced characters, established plots, set a program's mood and tone.

Often, no lyrics were needed. Quincy Jones's musical theme for "Sanford and Son" magically conjured both a junkyard and the shambling Fred Sanford. Paul Anka's "Tonight Show" theme was inseparable from late night and Johnny Carson (can you even hum the tune Jay Leno uses?). The "Miami Vice" theme, set over a pastel-perfect credit sequence, efficiently evoked the '80s decadence to follow. Same with Danny Elfman's nearly 20-year-old theme song for "The Simpsons."

TV shows don't do that anymore, or at least they don't do it the way Hagen and Courage and theme-writing legends like Mike Post ("Rockford Files," "Hill Street Blues," "Law & Order," etc.) did it in a quainter, slower era of television. Few network TV shows now open with extended title-and-theme sequences. Instead, they open "cold," with the action and dialogue immediately in progress after the conclusion of the preceding program, almost literally before viewers know what's going on. The opening credits tend to be perfunctory; apart from a few brief chords, "Lost" and "Grey's Anatomy" barely bother with music at all.

The reason for this is largely a result of the competitive dynamics of TV: So many channels, so little time to hook viewers. "Executives at the broadcast networks are operating in a climate of fear," says Jon Burlingame, the author of "TV's Greatest Hits," a history of theme music. "They're paranoid that if they haven't grabbed you in the first two minutes, you'll go away."

He laments: "The value of a theme as an identifying signature of a program is not appreciated by producers."

"It used to be," says Burlingame, "that you'd be in the kitchen getting a sandwich or a soda, and you'd hear that theme. It would remind you that your favorite show is coming on. There was a time when these composers really knew how to capture the essence of a show in music. It seemed so right and appropriate. That's the gift of composer. I hope we're not losing that."

"Oh, yeah, we're moving on up, to the East Side . . . "

The whole piece is well worth the read.

Well... If you run out of gas, then you can finish on the stove top and/or oven.

*And you can purchase those little adhesive strips that adhere to the side of the tank that indicate the level of the gas in the tank.  Because the gas is compressed - and cold - it does it by temperature.  For a more "homey" method, you can always pour some hot water down the side of the tank, then use your fingers to feel where the gas is.

Interesting...it's been a while (obviously), but I had heard that David Tennant's girlfriend's name was Sophia. ::)

Fingers (and toes) crossed vibes please:  I think my long, national nightmare with Funai may be coming to a close.  I just got some free advice from a consumer advocate attorney who gave some very good news.  Oregon has a Consumer Warranty Act on the books which specifically states that any manufacturer must have repair services available in the state, and that if a repair cannot be effected by the local repair dealer, I have the right to return the item to the retailer for a replacement!  So I just called Fred Meyer and gave them the story of my life, they were very amenable but need approval from the buyer (which, considering it's a state law, I don't think is going to argue much) and I get a new tv.  Only five months of wonky sound later.  Oy.

Glad to read that DR MBarnum is having such a fantastic time in Memphis.

Speaking of Memphis (and I don't remember if I've posted this yet), but for the first time ever, I bought a season ticket to the 5th Avenue theatre in Seattle!  Anyway, one of the shows in the season is called Memphis (http://www.5thavenue.org/show/Memphis0809/)!  Here's the description from the website:

We’re talkin’ downtown, down-home Memphis of the ’50s. Rock ’n’ roll is taking over the airways, Elvis is a wannabe, and a downright demented deejay named Huey is spinning the music of black and white America together for the first time. From the author of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and Over the River and Through the Woods, and the composer-keyboardist of Bon Jovi, comes a rafter-rattling musical that immortalizes the man who gave rock its original roll.

I'm way up in the nose-bleed section, but I'm seeing seven shows for the price of six...the seventh being the world premiere of Shrek: The Musical (http://www.5thavenue.org/show/SHREKTHEMUSICAL0809/) in its pre-Broadway run!!

That's it.  I quickly skipped through it and didn't notice the (usual) TCM logo in a corner...which is good.  I don't like those things. :P

...And they brought in a small band - piano, bass and drums - for their dance callbacks...  And a lot of amps and speakers... And they always seemed to be in the room right below me on six different audition days...  It was interesting having a not-so-faint backbeat during the ballads that people brought into sing.

Next, I watched all of bonus features on the CLASSE TOUS RISQUES DVD. Basically it was a bunch of vintage interviews with the original book writer, the star of the film (no, not Belmondo; it's Lino Ventura), and excerpts from a documentary on the director Claude Sautet.

There were also two trailers: one in French and a dubbed in English one with Belmondo promoted to the star of the film (the dubbing is horrible; sounds nothing like the original people).

My braces gone
My pimples gone

(a Hello 12, Hello 13, Hello Love reference)

They just don't write lyrics like that anymore.

And then there are those lyrics in the last "Montage" that you really have to listen for:

AL:
Early to bed,
Early to rise.
Your broad goes out with other guys.

MIKE:
Padiddle

MARK:
Ev'ry girl I know has lockjaw of the legs.

KRISTINE:
The ugliest boy asked me to the prom. I stayed home.

RICHIE:
My trouble is wine, women and song.
I can't any of them.

And then my personal favorite:

AL:
I got Nancy's picture,
Annabel's locket,
Cynthia's ring and Lucy's pants.
Head on collision!
Eddie got killed.

Every time I've taught that to someone, the response after the first play-thru has always been: "What?!?!?"  ;)

Today was the monthly lunch when the folks at work cook. Today they had a fish fry. It was the best fried fish I've ever had in my life! They also had stuffed crab, chicken wings (I'd never had fresh wings before...these were delightfully crispy and not unbearably spicy) plus homemade hush puppies, lots of roasted vegetables, yummy desserts. We were all in pain afterwards.

Crab stuffed with what?

My son-in-law makes it more an action sport - he keeps fipping the burgers and pressing down with his spatula to force out all that nasty juice - no runny mess on the plate.

He presents a lovely gray crumbly burger that sits neatly atop a cool, untoasted bun. There is usually lots of ketchup and mayo (I bring my own onion!)

der Burcer
Tonight, we'll be having Cuban Style Burgers with Grilled Ham & Cheese, an invention of Chris Schlesinger, of Cambridge, MA, and John Willoughby, of NYNY (pronounced Nye-Nye, in honor of Louis Nye, of course...  ;D).  Recipe featured in Build a Better Burger, by James McNair.

Start by mixing a spread of 1/4 c pickle relish, 1/4 c yellow American mustard, and 1/4 c spicy brown mustard.  Blend in a bowl and set aside to mellow.

For the patties, combine 1 lb ground sirloin, 1 t minced garlic, 1 t chile powder, 1 t ground cumin, 2 T chopped cilantro, 5 dashes Tabasco pepper sauce, a little kosher salt and a little freshly ground pepper.  Mix well, being careful to handle the meat as little as possible to avoid compacting it.  Divide into four equal patties, fitting to the bun size.

Prepare a grill to a medium-hot fire.  When ready, brush the grill rack with vegetable oil.  Place the patties on the rack, cover, and cook until done to preference, turning once, 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium.  Just before the patties are done, turn a second time and place a thin slice of baked ham and a slice of cheese on top of each patty.  (The dudes who wrote the recipe are calling for Monterey Jack, but I'm using Muenster.)

Toast 4 large sesame seed buns (split and brushed with butter).

Assembly time: Spread the pickle spread over the cut sides of the buns.  (No, not the side with the sesame seeds, fool!  And yes, the recipe specifies the cut sides.  Some people need to be told these things!)  On each bun bottom, place a patty, top with the bun tops, and serve.

(Truth to tell, a thin slice of onion wouldn't be uncalled for here.  I'd place it between the pickle-spreaded bottom bun and the patty.)

(Oooh!  Pickle-spreaded bottom bun!  Sure sounds like a euphemism to me!)

Quote
And tonight, on Doctor Who, David, Catherine and Freema (aka the Doctor, Donna and Martha) will be joined by Georgia Moffett as Jenny, in a tale entitled "The Doctor's Daughter".

As it happens, Ms. Moffett is the real life daughter of Peter Davison, who was the fifth actor to play the Doctor.  So she really is the Doctor's Daughter!

(And, rumour has it, Ms. Moffett is currently dating Mr. Tennant (aka David), which somehow has an incestuous ring to it.  My, my, my!)

Interesting...it's been a while (obviously), but I had heard that David Tennant's girlfriend's name was Sophia.
"Sophia" would be Sophia Myles, who played Madame de Pompedour, aka Reinette, in "The Girl in the Fireplace" (one of my favorite episodes).  That relationship appears to have played out.

What can I say.  David Tennant is obviously the "slutty" Doctor, both on camera and off!   ;D

While it's true some shows now don't have actual theme songs, several others do have them but don't play them any more: GREY'S ANATOMY and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES are two that come readily to mind. They need those extra minutes to sell ads. Network TV is STILL about the ads.

I watched the bonus features on disc 1 in the two-disc set. The director talks about the mythology of the SPIDERWICK series.

The creators of the original books, the director, the screenwriter, and the producer talk about their efforts to get the film made.

The Spiderwick Field Guide book is reprinted (at least in part) so that the viewer can thumb through the pages and read the entries on all the magical creatures. He can also hit a button to take him into the movie to see the creature's film representation.

There's also an in-movieguide that allows the viewer to stop the movie and branch off into the field guide to read the entries there if he chooses.

I think they pretty much take the first 60 who send them the money, lol. But it's a great program. It's hands on litigation. I know how to do criminal etc but haven't done enough actual immigration court cases to be really comfortable. What you do is mock immigration hearings and learn to do several types of federal cases I've never done.  They send out the materials weeks before and you have to prepare, then they tape you as you actually do the mock hearing. You're critiqued and take the tape to watch on your own.  I did this years ago with criminal trials and it really helped me develop as a trial lawyer. I'm hoping it will do the same here.

We had some great fun today with Greg Palmer who is just so darn funny! His impression of John Wayne is spot on...of course they were friends for many years and worked together a lot in the 1960s.

Each day they have a couple of panels of celebrity guests who are asked questions by a moderator, in this case Boyd Magers. The panel was Laurie Mitchell, Claudia Barrett, Beverly Washburn, and Noel Neill....it was great fun.

Good Evening!

Well, I ended up heading out for the evening with my roommate, Jim, and his step-father and aunt.  -They're all heading a little upstate tomorrow for a family wedding.  We supped at Ralph's Italian Restaurant... Well, I'm not sure what the real name of the place is, I've just always known it as Ralph's (on 56th & 8th).  Good meals, and the fococcia in the bread basket tonight was particularly fresh.

Then we headed on down to 46th Street to the new bar/restaurant, Bourbon Street for some cocktails.  First of all, what a stunner of a place.  It's in the old Danny's space, but the new owners totally gutted the interior - and a good portion of the exterior - and basically built a New Orleans mini-mansion on Restaurant Row.  Lots of dark wood.  Leather-back chairs. Lanterns, etc.

While we there, we were joined by a friend/co-worker of Jimmy's aunt, and even Jason dropped by for a few after his ACL duties were completed.  After we had downed out Strawberry Caiprihinhas, Hurricanes, and New Orleans Iced Teas, we then ventured across to street to peek into the new lounge area of Don't Tell Mama - they bought out the restaurant next door and set up some additional seating and waiting area for the main room.

Then we walked down to Becco where Jimmy happened to see a friend of his who is a waiter there.  We stopped into say Hi, and somehow managed to talk the bartender into a free round of brachetto!  :)

I then headed on home and Jimmy and his relatives made one more stop for a nightcap.

DR SWW - Hmm... A "Cuban" burger with Muenster... Hmm?  I would think the Muenster would mute some of the spicing in the burger, but it could also work against in a good way too.  I'm surprised the recipe originally called for Monterey Jack since it looks like it's trying to emulate a classic cubano with roast pork, ham and mozzarella (and pickles and mustard and garlic!).  I also would have tried a more "sturdy" bun, something along the lines of a kaiser roll, or even a section of a french or italian loaf.  In any case, looks like a good recipe.

"Frequency" was a very good movie.  Both my parents really liked it, but my mom was confused at times.  I guess she didn't pay attention as well as she should have.

My sister made some vegan cupcakes and I made the frosting from the recipe that she had.  Only non-hydrogenated shortening was used in the frosting.  I wish I had the recipe to post, because both were very good. :D
