Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both wild and wooly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're doing the I Herd The Sheep routine right now.

I forgot to  mention yesterday that I saw the beginning of a newish film that seemed to be totally done in split-screen, and from what I could tell from about 10 minutes of viewing, they seemed to be pulling it off!

It was called CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER WOMEN, with Helan Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart. I'd like to see the whole thing some day.

Glad to hear MBarnum arrived gome safely. I enjoyed reading about all the adventures in Memphis, and I chuckled a bit at these film stars being able to stay up later than MBarnum, even though I was picturing t677777777777788888888szzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zahem as being much older than he is. Par-tay!!

The above contribution was from the cat who is pacing back and forth across my keyboard. He obviously wants me to go back to bed, or else he's writing a spoiler alert.

DR TPunk - when does Guys & Dolls go up...or did it already?

We open Saturday night (at 9:30PM!). I am also currently experiencing a drawback of celebrating Jewish holidays- the show is at the Riverdale YMHA and they are observant. We cannot have rehearsal tonight or tomorrow night. Tonight we are allowed to sneak in and be fitted for costumes. We also had to get permission to come in on friday and saturday to build the sets. It will be a tight squeeze to get everything in place for Saturday. Perhaps a pray for Rosemary's baby would be appropriate here.

Having grown up during the 1950s, I have a special affection for THEM! and THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS.

You may not know it, but both films were accounts of actual incidents, suppressed by the Government.

Well, the DH is going to be in San Francisco for a convention at the end of June and beginning of July.  I'm doing research to find out what the requirements are, but I may just hop a quick flight out to CA and back so that we can legally be married before the courts shut it down.  NY State has already ruled that it will recognize the marriage.  The November CA ballot referendum may render it null and void, but I still think it's worth it to try.

I don't add oat bran but I do put in at least one kind of fruit, usually raisins but many times I'll add raisins and apricots or raisins and a banana or raisins and a peach or something like that. The added fruit adds fibre also. I use half a cup (the recommended serving size) and follow the directions cooking it in the microwave. You can also cook it in a pot on the stove. It lowered both cholesterols but it didn't lower my bad as much as I or my doctor would have liked but it's a start. Adding oat bran (or flax or some other high whole grain) may help to lower the bad cholesterol so it's worth a shot.

Hedy Lamarr: Not just a pretty face
How one of the best known actresses of mid-20th century revolutionized weapons systems and helped create cell phones
By Melinda Wenner

Fittingly, Frequency Hopping is itself a highly technological production. In addition to the 25-piece robotic orchestra developed by the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, the play uses a number of special effects. Singer wanted to portray "surrealist-inspired dreams and fantasies," such as objects popping out of bodies, so she incorporated two screens onto the set—one in front of the actors and one behind them. The front screen is transparent, so the actors can perform behind it; Singer explains that it utilizes a special invisible polymer that reflects projected or solid images so that they appear in three dimensions, like holograms.

FREQUENCY HOPPING: Hedy Lamarr (played in the new play Frequency Hopping by Erica Newhouse) helped develop a technology in the 1940s that would prove instrumental in wireless technologies like cell phones.

LADY DETECTIVES: CAN THEY HANDCUFF THE EMMYS?

From "The Closer" to "Law & Order," women inspectors get a great fictional ride.
By Irene Lacher, Special to The Times
June 4, 2008

WOMEN detectives are probably getting a better ride in the realm of fiction than they are in police departments. They've been rocking popular culture since Clarice Dyke debuted in an eponymous novel in 1883 and, at this point, most crime procedural dramas on television know better than to cruise for ratings without women on the force.

All the major networks plus TNT have prime-time crime shows with women either carrying the hour or sharing the spotlight with a male partner. All of NBC's hardy "Law & Order" spinoffs feature coed crime teams, and the original version even has a woman, Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), telling the guys what to do.

The female crime fighter has evolved into such an honored staple of television that several at a time can often be found in Emmy's list of five dramatic actress nominees in any given year. Indeed, Kyra Sedgwick, whose career has surged with her role as LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson on TNT's "The Closer," says her character resonates with audiences because "she's what every woman would like to be -- someone who doesn't apologize for her power."

Of course, women who make a living carrying a gun or hanging around others who do are sometimes a wee bit complicated, and that goes double for their small-screen counterparts. But, for better or worse, even fictional girls will be girls, with all the peculiarly female neuroses that come along with that. Who knew eating disorders could be so entertaining?

SHIPOOPI!

Speaking of Shipoopi...there is REAL trouble in River City (aka Mason City)
Quote
Around Mason City:
Mason City, with more than 27,000 people, was left without drinking water after the city's water treatment plant was flooded. Residents in the town were asked not to use tap water, and all restaurants were closed.

On Monday morning, Mason City officials began bringing in portable toilets for residents' use. Residents can use their toilets but must have another source of water to flush.

Water has receded enough that officials are heading to the water works plant to start assessing the damages.

Inmates at the Cerro Gordo County jail have been moved to four other jails.

The floodwaters in Mason City, which also caused a breach in a levee, prompted the mayor to impose a state of emergency and a curfew.

About 100 Mason City residents flocked to an emergency shelter set up in Clear Lake. Shelters were also opened in Iowa City, Polk County, Decorah, Jasper County, Butler County and Red Oak for people forced out of their homes by floodwaters.

I so wish that Cathy Rigby's "cat in the hat" performance on Broadway had been filmed.  Perhaps "Seussical" would have had a better run had she originated the role.

I wonder how Andrea Martin would've done.  Wasn't she supposed to be the original before David Shiner was broght in?

DR tomovoz, I send my condolences and wish I could send personal hugs.

On a happier note, I had a lively phone call from Miss Kim Criswell in London, and she asked me to score "Night and Day" for her July 10(???) concert in Italy. I just called her conductor Kevin Farrell about getting his copy of Kim's piano arrangement, and I'll meet him at 6:30 for dinner to catch up on gossip and pick up the music. I miss my Kimmy, I do.

So no Friday night performances?  Well, break a knish!

Oh, how wonderful!  Are you registered?

On another subject, what is everyone ordering from DD or DVDPlanet on the current sales?  I am just so buried under review stuff right now, I have barely even started to look.  I have the original Jay Ward George in the Jungle and the Criterion Renoir The River in my shopping cart right now, but I haven't even placed an order yet.  This is probably the first time in years I haven't spent hundreds of dollars right out of the gate (with two or three return trips).

Oh well, it doesn't really matter.

I don't know how long it lasts, but I just ordered (literally...just 20 minutes ago) the DVD to Company (http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=39029348) with Raul Esparza.  The normal DD price was $16.88, but with one of the codes, I got an additional discount of $3.38. :D Here's the list of codes that Ron (I think) posted:

I'm flipping back and forth between Legally Blonde and Nashville Star.   There's a girl on Nashville star from not too far from here. So, I was curious.  She's the one with the brand new big boobs and the big cross around her neck.  I think of it as big boobs for jesus

In other news...

I had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch at Crif Dogs (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/crif-dogs/).  I got a plain Crif Dog just for reference, and then a "Sourcheese Dog" one (sliced half-sour pickles and melted cheese). YUM!  YUM!  And an ice cold Birch Beer to wash it all down.  :)

*I was originally hoping to grab a slice from Artichoke Basille's Pizza & Brewery (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/artichoke-basilles-pizza/), but the brothers who run it, apparently, decided to close on Mondays and/or because of the heat.  For all I know, they might have opened after I left the East Village.  *There were a couple of storefronts that had signs posted: "Will Open Later Today When It's Cooler".

I had a great evening of all high definition entertainment.

I began with ELIZABETH on HD-DVD. This is my first time seeing it in HD (had the sDVD and watched it several times). However, I was surprised to see Daniel Craig in the cast (which had escaped me in previous viewings).

It is a MUCH better, sharper transfer than ELIZABETH THE GOLDEN AGE which I watched a month or two ago. It's a better movie, too, even with all the liberties taken with history.

I noticed that the screenwriter is the same man who writes THE TUDORS so I guess he's used to fudging on history by now.

I concluded my evening of HD entertainment by watching THE BOURNE IDENTITY on HD-DVD. Though the disc looked excellent, it wasn't as sharp as THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM on HD-DVD.

I did not remember Clive Owen as one of the assassins.

It's always a nice surprise to watch these films again and see actors whom you didn't know the first times around that you know very well now.

Friday night was the annual church ladies dinner.  The women all gatehr and have dinner and watch a show performed by the church youth (who also act as servers)

This year's production was a murder mystery. The Vixter played a French cabaret singer. The part clled fore her to be arrested and handcuffed just as she was introduced for her second number, being a true performer she dragged the hapless detective to the microphone and inisted on singing her number before being dragged off

The show was very funny and the kids did a great job (and I didn't guess the identity of the real murderer)(http://)

Back from a bite to eat - and now having air-conditioning issues - that breaker keeps going out - luckily someone showed up to fix it prior to the reading and threw the breaker and changed the filter and we were fine.  But when I came home, the air was blowing hot and the breaker had broken again.  I put it right, and now it seems to be okay, but I'm really getting annoyed about it.

...and the breaker had broken again.  I put it right, and now it seems to be okay, but I'm really getting annoyed about it.

Engineering lesson:

Breakers trip based on the amount of current being used in the line.

Induction motors (like A/C units, refrigerators, laser printers, dishwashers, any electronics with a cooling fan, etc.) draw huge amounts of current when they start up - their start-up current surges are much more than their rated steady state demand. If you have two or more induction motors on the same line and they happen to cycle on at the same time, it is easy to pop a breaker. Cycling induction motors drive electricians nuts - most of their instruments do not read induction currents, only steady state.
