Well, you've read the notes, the notes were lethargic, and now it is time for you to post until the lethargic cows come home.

Marco the Magnificent's favorite trick, to DEFENESTRATE a member of the audience, was a FEAT RESENTED by each and every volunteer.

Good morning, all! I have another day at Toyland and I look forward to spending time on the scores with a co-worker.

After that, I shall hie myself back here to deal with other madness, including a search for a missing DVD, a call to my doctor for several prescription refills, and a look at some of the junk piling up on my work table.

I was aurprised to see the always unpleasant and hostile lesbianLisa looking so calm last night on "Top Chef" reunion. It's good to know the meds finally kicked in.

TOD: "You know me. I never gossip. But since you asked . . ."

I, too, liked Rona Barrett, and I think Michael Musto in the Village Voice is always a hoot.  When the magazine Movieline premiered, there were a couple of young men who had great blind items, and I've forgotten their names.

Up at 4:50am, the air in the bedroom seemed very stale - must get a fan today for the bedroom.  DP left for the bakery and I sought refuge in the living room where it is nice and cool for now (but only for now)... so the DD and I are enjoying the early AM.  Today, must learn the Mulan Jr score and work on the Damn Yankees score also.  Will spend time working on some Bach Little Preludes and Fugues for Organ also, which is always exciting and brain twisting.  I'm thinking I may watch a DVD this early AM.  Maybe "Sunset Blvd" or something like that.

Movie columnists?

When I was a Hollywood publicist, folks like James Bacon, Hank Grant and Army Archerd were the absolute best.  They always found space in their columns for my items.  Dorothy Manners was also a nice lady.

On the other hand, Joyce Haber was a b***h.  Totally untrustworthy.  She even, on occasion, did J. Edgar Hoover's dirty work.

I read the Blind Items here.

Past:  Rona Barrett, of course.  Her autobiography was good.
I was going to say Joyce Haber until I read DR DRUXY's post.

Not many today....since it's mostly internet based.  I don't watch the Entertainment tv shows which are mostly used for promoting this movie or that.

I, too, have downloaded it but like David (Scrimshaw) I have not yet played with it other than to discover that the latest version of Real Player (11) which has the cool download video feature does not work with Firefox 3. I don't know if it will work with F3 eventually but it doesn't work now. I still use IE so I can use the download video feature. We shall see.

I will see David on Sunday at the 3pm performance of Guys and Dolls starring (well, not really starring but we like to think so) our own TPUNK!!! It's in Riverdale (the oh so tony part of the Bronx) so it's quite a trek for us Manhattanites. I''ve got to find my passport and plan the trip. We will probably leave sometime Saturday afternoon to make sure we get there on time  ;)

DR George, i am very jealous about Shrek the musical and you getting to see Brian D'Arcy James.  You'll have to tell us all about it!

I'm curious have you seen any of the movies to be able to compare?

I think the only one i saw was shrek 2 (with my sister's niece and nephew). ANd i actually really like it!

I'm curious if this musical follows any of the movies stories.

Do you have any idea if he'll be doing the same type of column (as he did at tv guide?).  My sister is addicted to him.

I don't read him that often. But whenever i have i've enjoyed him a lot.

Just one of the problems.....I seem to have lost tabbed browsing as well....although maybe I need to click something.  Oh well.

Did anyone else read Rona Barrett's autobiography?  She had some scandalous personal tales to tell and didn't spare herself OR her friends in the writing....so you can imagine what the TRUTH was.

Her biggest scoop was probably that she broke the news that Elvis was marrying Priscilla before ANYONE else knew anything.
Title: Re:A CERTAIN SORT OF LETHARGY
Post by: Matt H. on June 19, 2008, 07:30:19 AM
Rona Barrett was fine in print, but I never really cared for her on TV. There was something a little smug about her that turned me off.

I remember vividly Hedda Hopper appearing regularly on ART LINKLETTER'S HOUSE PARTY. Used to love her visits. I'll never forget after the 1964 Oscars (in 1965) that she had a FIT that Agnes Moorehead had lost to Lila Kedrova.

Anybody remember THE GOSSIP SHOW on the E! Channel? Used to be the one show I would tune in faithfully every week. Had a wonderful set of gossips from Rex Reed to Liz Smith, and they were good with blind items. I was really sorry when it went off the air.

I enjoyed SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE last night.

But i guess i sort of agree with DR Jose. The choreography was not as great as it sometimes is.

The judges were very harsh. But they have their few favorites (will, katee and her partner joshua). They also love chelsea (the blonde one and her partner). And carrington and twitch.

I actually loved the choreography for courtney (the brunette cheerleader) and her partner.  And i think my favorite dance of the night was carrington (sp?).  I know mia was all over her about her smiling throughout the routine. But i thought she was just stunning.

There are quite a few i could not care less about.

The editor of EW introduced him and another new writer to their readers in last week's issue, but other than saying he'd be writing about TV, didn't give many details.

He hasn't been added to the EW website yet and hasn't been taken off of TV GUIDE's webside yet either.

A butterfly emerging from the chrysalis. See how the wings are still folded:

A journey to a star would not be very far
As long as I’m alone with you
Romantic as we are, a journey to a star
Could start before the dawn breaks through
You’re right beside my heart
We’re just about a kiss apart
And we could make a dream come true
A moment of your love would have the feeling of
A journey to a star with you.

Lovely butterfly photos, DRLAURA.

At last after a few months, Mercury has turned direct, so auto, electronic, and communication problems should abate.

HOWEVER, I didn't read this anywhere, but after driving around town this morning - ALL traffic, pedestrian, bicycle, and walking animal rules have been suspended.  It is anything GOES for anybody....that's the only explanation for what I saw.

And I almost smashed a squirrel who ran out, stopped, reversed directions, and then decided to saunter on across Maple Lane.....stopping to look at me as I looked at him.

I broked into my "Carmen Miranda" DVD box last night and played "The Gang's All Here."  The good news is that it's light years better than the version Fox released with the "Alice Faye" DVD box.

The not-so-good news is that while it seems to be richer in color than the laserdisc, my favorite scene in the film (A Journey to a Star) is considerably "off", for lack of a better word.  It looks just fine on the laserdisc, but on this DVD it seems to be slightly out of focus and too deeply saturated.  One would think, given all the miracles of digital imagery, that they could have made this version "definitive."

Re: That scene  -- perhaps they'll never go any further, as these things go.  But it's a crying shame.

That said, the overall look of the film is vastly better than both the laser and the first DVD abomination.

The City of San Francisco has announced it is looking into making it LEGAL for bicyclists to roll through -- with caution, of course -- traffic lights and stop signs.

I'm not quite sure why common sense has abandoned whoever announced this will be "considered."  The bicyclists all do it anyway.  And anyone who has the misfortune of hitting a bicyclist when one of them runs a light or a sign is always deemed GUILTY (for not being on the lookout for same).

I'm very pro-bicycles, but I strongly believe that ANYONE riding on a street or road is BOUND to follow the rules of the road.  That doesn't mean head-of-line privileges or running through lights/stop signs just because no traffic is coming or passing on the right and giving automobile drivers heart attacks when they see a bicyclist inches away from the right rear fender of their cars.'

To "enact" this, thank goodness, the city will need the state legislature to rewrite existing laws.  And that requires a "vote".

I have a few things that the butterflies nectar on, but I planted some passion vine last year, and that is the larval food for gulf fritillary butterflies. They found it and I have had to buy more passion vines and move the caterpillars when they have eaten all the leaves.

I'm glad you got your supply of Duke's from DR Jose.

I discovered I can get 4 32-oz jars of Duke's via Amazon for $16.16, but the shipping is $18.

I think not.

There is much good in the USPS flat-rate box...two sizes, one perfect for four jars of Duke's...and under $10 postage, too.

Umm... Since I did not head down to Virginia this week, there was no possible way for me to send any Duke's to DR coleslaw, so...  I believe he did take the Amazon.com route - thus the year's supply of the mayo in question.

I remember when we did Sweeney Todd during the Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center, we had the keyboard programmer "map" out the final chords of organ prelude so that all you had to was play a simple single-note scale leading to the first whistle blast.

Okay, you tough New Yorkers - here is the story:

Colony Records, to whom I sent ten copies of Evening Primrose, and who sold out of said ten copies in one day, has not paid their long overdue invoice.  Marty Cooper, who normally gets our invoices turned around in days, was conveniently out sick for several weeks, but when I called him a few weeks ago he assured me it would be taken care of the day he got back - June 5.  I wrote him again when the check hadn't come and he told me he couldn't help me, that I had to e-mail the manager of the store.  I did so.  And then I called to speak to the accountant.  Neither the accountant or the owner would actually get on the phone with me, but they did relay the information that they'd gotten my e-mail and the check would go out tomorrow.  That was last Wednesday.  Needless to say, the check isn't here.

I called Mr. Cooper again today, and he said I had to deal with the boss as he's having trouble with his bosses and was on his way to some union.  I called and asked to speak to the accountant.  I was put on hold and remained on hold for ten minutes.  I called back - I was told the accountant was on another call and would call me back.  I left my info, but I think we all know I will not have a returned call, and I think we all know that they will keep avoiding me, all over an invoice that is less than $200.

So, what is my next step.  Are any of you tough New Yorkers willing to pay a visit to the store and make enough noise that the accountant and/or manager will come out and speak to you about the problem - and perhaps even take care of the invoice?  I would love to be able to do SOMETHING that would get their attention in a way that would then cause them to rethink their disgusting behavior and their non-payment of an invoice.  I wish I could say that I'd just shine them on, but Kritzerland needs all the dough it can get.  Any thoughts?

bk - Just to make sure you have all your proper ducks in order, the first thing you should do - if you haven't done so already - is to mail them a paper (hard copy) invoice marked, "Past Due".  Or better yet: "30 Days Past Due", "60 Days Past Due", etc.  If you find that you have to take further action, phone calls do not count as "official notice".

Alas, I only go into Colony as a last-resort - even browsing in there can turn into an unpleasant experience - especially when I hear some of their clerks giving out so much misinformation to their customers.

In the meantime, just make it part of your daily routine.  Just give them one call each day until someone else picks up the phone.  *Alas, since the amount of the invoice is under $200, they probably know that they can string you a long for a bit since the amount would not qualify for small claims court.

I'm sure many cyclists are reckless. But i don't totally agree with what you wrote. Yes when there are cars around, a bicycle needs to stop and obey the traffic lights.

But i ride quite frequently. And when i am cycling in my village with no cars around, i only glance at the stop signs. And normally do not stop.

I also think that bicycles mostly need to go to the "front of the line" in order not to get hit! I know when i need to cross the street and there is busy traffic (and we get to a light) i always go to the front so i can get across.

I try not to cycle on busy streets (there are a lot of bike paths in my area.
But when i go on a fairly busy street (that is between where i live and the mall) i drive on the sidewalk.

I am careful of pedestrians and do not feel safe riding on the street. I drive slow (i don't know if this is totally legal). But most bikers seem to do it.

I don't even want to waste my breath on the phone calls, frankly.  I just thought if I could get someone to go in there and perhaps be annoying in loudly asking for the accountant, or just making it seem like we'd be dropping by every day until they got so tired they'd just take care of it.  I will send them a hard copy but really, if they're going to be assholes they're going to be assholes.  The one thing I can and, of course, will do, is ridicule them on this here site at every opportunity - by only using factual information, of course.

Oh... Yeah... What DR JMK said about small claims court.  ;)

In any case...

I sense that most of the people who read "the other boards" already know that Colony is not the most "upright" business.  -$29.99 for a SINGLE - not even an import - CD New Release?!?!?!?  Since most of the people - at least from personal observation - who frequent the store are not from NYC - I really don't think think you're going to make any sort of dent in their business - or reputation.

Yes, a personal online campaign will help you blow off some steam, but, frankly, I don't think it's going to help you get your money any slower or faster.  If anything, it could open you - and Kritzerland - up for some ridicule.  "Why is he making such a fuss for less than $200?"

I know that dealing with delinquent payers and payments is a pain in the butt - trust me, I know - but it's also part of doing and running a business.   Even when I worked as a music buyer for a music store, I heard many a tale about Colony from my sales reps.  You just got to keep keep after them with mailings, faxes and phone calls.

While I cooked and ate lunch today, I watched two episodes of MURDER SHE WROTE from the season 8 box that I got yesterday from DD.

In the first, Jessica has taken a job teaching criminology at Manhattan University, and on her first day in her new NYC apartment, the former tenant of her apartment is murdered in the parking garage. Surprising murderer though I remembered who it was from having seen and loved the episode almost 20 years ago when it first aired. Euene Roche was the primary guest star along with William Windom and Julie Adams from the regular recurring Cabot Cove cast.

In the second episode, the college professor whom Jessica replaced teaching a particular criminology class challenges her to a "duel" of solving a series of campus assaults. Roxie Roker was the guest star I was the most familiar with.

Then I began THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO. In the first episode Michael Constantine played the father of a kid shot by Michael Douglas for leaving the scene of a robbery and firing at him. John Kerr and a young Gregory Sierra were also guest stars.

These shows are not mysteries but rather crime dramas with the criminals pretty much revealed from the beginning as the cops work their way toward the solution.

Setting a new record, the world's most expensive burger is available at just one restaurant in West London, England, once a week — but it will eventually be available to order via a hotline.

The fine ingredients of what is called simply 'The Burger' include Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, lambs lettuce, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise in an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun.

Marty, the show buyer, has told me he's having trouble with his bosses - if he leaves, no one there will even know how to order show CDs.  And they don't care.  Marty actually asked me to send him twenty more EP CDs a few weeks ago, telling me I'd be paid for this invoice the day he got back on June 5th.  Thank heaven I didn't send him the second order.  Of course, I will never sell to them again, I just hate to eat the invoice.  So, if any NYs would like to go in and ask for the EP CD that would be great.  Ask them when they'll have them in.  Make it seem like there's a demand because it's close to selling out.

In the meantime, Sony has moved up its Sondheim box set release date (in the works for four years now) completely because I put out the EP CD.  They were always going to include the songs (but not any of the underscore tracks) - once I announced EP suddenly the producer told his bosses that they'd better move pronto.  At that point it was slated for end of year, and those in the know didn't think they'd even make that.  I guess we've done  everyone a service.  So, I'd love to get rid of the rest of these CDs before the box comes out.  Right now they haven't announced WHAT the unreleased tracks are, not that they can call the EP tracks unreleased now :)

At some point, hopefully it will be easier to pay me than have to endure the barrage they're about to get.  As to taking the story public - let them bring it on.  I'm sure I'm not the only one they're doing this to - and you know what - they're not going to do anything anyway.

Can you write this kind of thing off your taxes?

OSCAR ALTERS SONG, FOREIGN FILM RULES

Only two songs per film can be nominated at the 81st Academy Awards. And the foreign language film committee will have more say in determining nominees.

By Mark Olsen, Special to The Times
12:41 PM PDT, June 19, 2008

It's only June, but there's already some intrigue in the impending awards season.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved the rules for the upcoming 81st Academy Awards at a meeting Tuesday night. Rule changes in the categories of original song and foreign language film seemed to be a direct result from controversies during last year's awards season.

For best song, there is no limit to the number of songs that may be submitted from a given film, but only two songs from any one film may now actually receive a nomination. As you may recall, for the 80th Academy Awards, the film "Enchanted" was nominated for three songs, shutting out such once-presumptive nominees as Eddie Vedder for his songs from "Into the Wild." The previous year, "Dreamgirls" was also nominated for three songs.

The screening event at which music branch members view clips of eligible songs will still be held, but DVDs of the clips will be made available to members unable to attend the screening.

I think I'm done with my errands for the day.  Has anyone gotten a single item like a CD or DVD from amazon in the last week?  If so, did it come in the usual amazon.com package or did it come in a padded envelope.  I got something in a padded envelope - an absolute first for amazon and not a good way for them to ship, frankly.

Gold Derby by Tom O'Neil (http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2008/06/tony-award-wi-1.html)

Quote
TONY AWARD WINNAHS GET BOX-OFFICE BUMP

For those who wonder why the producers of Broadway shows work so hard to win Tony Awards, the answer lies in the dramatic uptick in takings following exposure on Sunday night's CBS telecast. Even with increased competition meaning decreased ratings as of late (last year it was the series finale of "The Sopranos" while this year it was merely a NBA finalist game), the 6 million or so who do tune in to the Tony Awards are definite theater fans.

As per Variety, they voted for the winners on Monday with best musical "In the Heights" racking up a cool million in sales while best revival "South Pacific" took in $700K. But these increased ticket sales don't come cheap. According to the exec producer of Lincoln Center Theater, staging the showstopping "South Pacific" medley on the Tony Awards cost $240,000. And "Heights" had to reach for close to $200K to put together its ensemble number.

In a break with Tony tradition, even new tuners that didn't make the final four were featured, albeit in abbreviated fashion. And old chestnuts like "The Lion King," which opened the telecast, and the soon to be closing "Rent," which brought back the original cast for one last number, also benefitted from the not so free publicity. And with host Whoopi Goldberg regarded as the best booster of Broadway since Rosie O'Donnell, hopes are that the sales will continue to rise into the summer.

I'd overlook the misspelling of "benefited" if the author at least acknowledged the competition of the PGA Open Telecast with Tiger Woods.

I watched two more STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO episodes. In the first, priests are being murdered by a very disturbed young man played by Peter Strauss. This also had folks like Marshall Thompson as guest stars.

In the next episode, Leslie Nielsen plays a cop dying of a terminal illness who wants to exact revenge on a mob boss (played by Ray Danton) who always gets away with his crimes. Intriguing episode, the best of the four I've watched.

I'll be starting on disc two tomorrow. There are only 11 episodes in this set, so it's going to be one of the easier ones to finish.

I watched the remaining two MURDER SHE WROTE episodes on disc 1 in that set. One I had never seen before, the one with Mort Metzger's ex-con brother returning to Cabot Cove to make amends to his older brother. Good mystery with Pat Hingle as the principal guest star.

The other one (which I did remember clearly) had Jessica Walter as a Kitty Kelley-like biographer trying to write a dishy book on ailing former screen star Barbara Bain. Her husband played by Bradford Dillman was blamed for the murder of the writer.

I'll watch more MURDER SHE WROTE tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch, I'm sure.

I ended my evening with an excellent episode of FEAR ITSELF with Colin Ferguson and Clifton Collins Jr. giving superb performances as very different men who switch bodies while both are in critical condition in a hospital.

This has a great twist ending.

You must have watched tonight's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. I recorded it and will watch tomorrow, probably while I eat lunch instead of watching MURDER SHE WROTE.

I spent a lovely evening out visiting with a friend from high school -- the only person I've known longer than my DH. He and his family have been missionaries in the middle east for the last ten or so years. It was good to see him again.

So, I'd left the air conditioning on to cool off the house.  I get home - seventy-eight degrees and the "air" blowing warm.  I go outside to the breaker that's not supposed to trip anymore because of all the new things the A/C installed and did today, and it's tripped.  I throw it.  It trips.  I throw it.  It trips.  Then all the lights in the house go off because the main breaker decides it's had enough.  So, I throw that, call the Handy Man, tell him I'm stopping payment on every check I've written until this is fixed once and for all.  He assures me he'll be here in the morning and he'd damn well better be.  I have suspected all along that the problem wasn't ever WITH the A/C but with the breaker itself, since they'd been doing work out there and rewiring the other electrical problems.  If that proves to be the case, then they're going to have to figure out why I needed all this other work done.

In other news...

I just put some more of my "extra" bakeware and cookware up on craigslist.  If it's anything like last time, I should have most of it spoken for by the time I wake up in the morning and check my e-mail.  ;)  -And, if not, at least I finally sorted through some more stuff.

Oh, and I also reposted the DVD Box Sets that I had posted a few months ago... To which no one responded.  And, yes, I lowered the prices too.  -It really is amazing how much they depreciate once they leave the store.  ::)

Well, I get to spend some quality time with the baby boy of one of my friends - a.k.a. baby-sitting - in the morning, so I should definitely get to bed now.

Goodnight.

So, you're just going to leave your Fanny up in the air until morning?
