Well, you've read the notes, the notes twiddled and resolved but never piddled, and now it is time for you to post until the twiddling cows come home.

Dr Ginny's "I & R" test - I suspect she misheard:

MED TERMS (http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9185)

Quote
Definition of INR
INR: International normalized ratio, a system established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee on Thrombosis and Hemostasis for reporting the results of blood coagulation (clotting) tests. All results are standardized using the international sensitivity index for the particular thromboplastin reagent and instrument combination utilized to perform the test.

For example, a person taking the anticoagulant ("blood thinner") warfarin (brand name: Coumadin) might optimally maintain a prothrombin time (a "pro time" or PT) of 2 to 3 INR. No matter what laboratory checks the prothrombin time, the result should be the same even if different thromboplastins and instruments are used. This international standardization permits the patient on warfarin to travel and still obtain comparable test results.

AND

LAB TESTS (http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/pt/test.html)

Quote
The test result for PT depends on the method used, with results measured in seconds and compared to the average value in healthy people. Most laboratories report PT results that have been adjusted to the International Normalized Ratio (INR). Patients on anti-coagulant drugs should have an INR of 2.0 to 3.0 for basic “blood-thinning” needs. For some patients who have a high risk of clot formation, the INR needs to be higher - about 2.5 to 3.5.

Some substances you consume, such as alcohol, can affect the PT/INR test. Antibiotics, aspirin, and cimetidine can increase the PT/INR. Barbiturates, oral contraceptives and hormone-replacement therapy (HRT), and vitamin K - either in a multivitamin or liquid nutrition supplement - can decrease PT.

Certain foods (such as beef and pork liver, green tea, broccoli, chickpeas, kale, turnip greens, and soybean products) contain large amounts of vitamin K and can alter PT results. Make sure that your doctor knows all the drugs you are taking and if you have eaten any of these foods recently so that the PT/INR results are interpreted and used correctly.

Good morning, all! Outside of a couple of errands, I'm finishing up a project here today. Tomorrow, back to Toyland.  I had a great time at the NYPL on Saturday, learning about the Kinemacolor company of America.

DR Jennifer, if I were in an express line with you, you would be dead. Deceased. Defunct. Out of Print. Remaindered. Buried. Cremated. Out of Sight. Your attitiude toward other buyers waiting behind you is rude. The express line is based on fast scanning and getting the customer's purchase bagged and out of the store. I suspect that most clerks don't protest much is because it's faster to deal than to put up a fight.

Robert Sherwood, playwright.

PULP FICTION was the first Quentin Tarantino movie I ever saw, and I was basically repulsed by it. I felt unclean upon leaving the theater. I've never watched it all the way through again, but I'd be up to it since I have since seen other films (and TV episodes) of his and am sort of used to his visual and literary style now.

Despite recommendations by DR TPunk to watch the two parts of KILL BILL, I never got around to it. However, I read that Disney is coming out with both parts on Blu-ray this fall, so it looks like I'll be watching it for the first time to review.

re: the express lane.

The thing most people here are forgetting is that it is different in every place. I didn't say that i walked up to the express lane with 12 items (3 of each).  I just said that WHERE I LIVE i believe that people think the rule is per kind not per item.

Anyway here every grocery store has the serve yourself.

And in addition ALL the express lanes all serve as customer service (returning bottles, doing lottery tickets...) There is another entrance to the express cash and those people don't wait in the same line but still get the express cashier.

I don't try to act rude. And actually try to be very considerate of others.
So that was sort of mean to say.

Jennifer, take it from the professional:

"Items" refers to each item, individually, scanned as such.

It does not mean entire batches of the same kind of thing all counting as one item.  If it has to be scanned, then it is an item.

Admittedly, this can get confusing with produce, where some items are counted by weight and others by the piece.  Oranges, for example, are by weight.  Grapefruit are per each.  And this can vary from store to store.  But generally, the signage will tell you if something is "each" or "per pound."

Rule of thumb: if anyone is giving you a nasty stare, you're probably violating the rule.

DR SWoody, how do you feel about customers bringing their own canvas bags?
I love it!

For one thing, it's the whole green attitude.

Plus, the canvas (or other material) bags are usually much stronger than the plastic or paper that we supply.

Many of them are well constructed, and easy to pack.  And they hold a lot.

And, if they're from someplace other than our own store (in which case, they're probably from a store not in our area), they're a great conversation starter.

For instance, I've found that people using the reusable bags are often also interested in farmer's markets.  That's always a good thing.

Oh, and at our store we give a five cent discount per bag used.  It used to be three cents a bag, but we recently had a little inflation hit.   ;D

My DVD viewing last night was "Becoming Jane", a mostly enjoyable account of Ms. Austen's early years.  I say "mostly" because after two-thirds of a rather enjoyable film, the pacing became sluggish and more enamored of visuals than anything that propelled the story.

I went from very interested to yelling at the TV screen to "MOVE IT ALONG"!

Ann Hathaway is wonderful  Ditto James McAvoy.

I thought, however, that the most noble individual in the whole endeavor was Mr. Wisley, portrayed by Laurence Fox.  His character was the one most firmly "finished" -- an "heir"-to-be who is reluctant to be his own person, who is biding his time and who hopes to win a bride to solidify his inheritance.  How unfortunate for him that he picked the one girl in his county who could think and wanted a man who put himself "out there" rather than held himself in reserve.

I almost always bag my own groceries, if there is not a bagger, and it speeds things up tremendously.

Very rarely, however, does the employee say, "Thank you for bagging!"

The way our registers are set up, it is actually easier for me to bag than it is for the customer to do so.

Next to the scanner are two bag holders, tiered so that they are both easy to reach.  This way, I can be working on one bag, filling it with canned goods for example, and another bag, filling it with produce.  And I'm danged fast, if I do say so myself.

Between where I am working and the typical "bagging" section (towards the back) is a gap of about two and a half feet.  This makes it easy for me to take the filled bags and move them into the grocery cart as I go.  And our elderly customers (Rehoboth being part retirement town) appreciate the loading of the cart, along with the bagging.

That two and a half feet, however, makes it more difficult for me to hand the items to a customer.  Even with my long arms, that's a stretch.  And I'm usually moving a lot faster than the customers.  Remember, I do this for a living, I've had practice.

Yes, I could put up the mechanical belt that connects the scanner section with the back section, and just put the items on the belt, but I'm still a lot faster than the customers, and usually everything backs up when the customer insists on doing their own bagging.

But this is just how our the registers at our own store is organized.  I've met uncountable customers from the New York (city and state) area who are surprised to find me bagging, as they usually have to do it themselves.

And they are also amazed at how quickly I get finished, saving them time so they can get back to the traffic jams on the highway.   ::)

On the other hand, there are customers who are very well organized, whom I can work well as a team.  And I appreciate their help, and their attitude.

But, then again, there are the husbands who have been dragged along by their wives on this grocery chore, and try to feel useful by grabbing the bags out of my hands so that they can load the cart themselves.  Not only do they frequently put heavy bags on top of the bread (which I would have set aside, in order to avoid such a faux pas), they also frequently snag my fingers in the bag handles the first three or four times in the process of grabbing the bags.  I just smile and move on to the next bag.  (By which I do not mean the wife, who is patiently waiting with her pocketbook and rolling her eyes at this point.   ;))

I cannot imagine you ever getting in the way, DR Laura.

Just pay attention to the situation, how the register is set up.  Sometimes, smiling and saying a sincere thank-you is the nicest help you can give the cashier.

But I'm sure that comes automatically with you.   :-*

Not my own comments, but someone else posted elsewhere:

On the day of a gay wedding, it’s bad luck for the two grooms to see each other at the gym.

And

It’s considered bad luck for either of the grooms to have dated the priest.

Amy Vanderbilt and Emily Post probably would have agreed!

Yeah, DR Elmore, the irony is that's what I was already doing, recovering from the foot surgery, and one theory is that's what brought this about.  I, however, think the beginnings of the blood clots were there more than a month ago and were brushed off by my primary care physician.  In that respect, it's a good thing that the surgery accelerated the problem or I could have just been walkin' around one day and - Blammo! - pulmonary embolism.

I always thought i would hate it (plus i don't get mtv or mtv canada). But mtv canada's sister station (ctv) started airing part of season 3. And i've found myself addicted.

So i went to mtv.com but you cannot watch anything if you are outside the US. But then i went to mtv.ca and they have every episode. So i am going to start watching it from the beginning!

Der Brucer and I have, indeed, been adding the names on Tuesdays to the lists.

Since my work schedule now runs Wednesday thru Friday working on billing, and Saturday and Sunday working on register, this means that Monday and Tuesday are now my scheduled days off (barring being called in).  So, at least for now, I'm back on scorekeeping duty.

So you'd better all toe the line, boys, or there will be hell to pay!   Bwaahh-haaa-haa-haa-haaaa!   ;D

This one guest starred John McCartin, Edward Winter, and Norman Lloyd. I did remember seeing this one several times, and it's an excellent mystery.

I had time to watch three more episodes of MAD MEN this afternoon. All of them excellent especially one concerning a man who comes to Don's work thinking he knows him from some time in the past. Don't want to say any more for fear of spoiling anything for those who have yet to experience this marvelous show, but I had tears in my eyes once again by the end of this episode.

I wish you luck, Matt.  I made it thru the first half hour of KILL BILL and that was enough for me.

Title: Re:TWIDDLING
Post by: singdaw on June 23, 2008, 06:05:40 PM
I tell you, the sense of [inappropriate] entitlement and selfishness in public discourse just makes me sick.

Just yesterday, at TPunk's production of Guys & Dolls, there was a couple sitting directly behind DR Ben and DP Ant who had mistakenly purchased tickets for the previous weekend.  There were in the right seats, but on the wrong date.  And they were rude and belligerant and refused to give up the seats, even though the people that legitimately had those seats for the performance were waiting to be seated.  And they refused an alternate accommodation because the seats being offered were farther away from the stage.  And as a result of this kerfuffle, the rest of the audience was forced to endure a 15 minute delay in the start of the performance.  But these people didn't care one jot.  It's "me first!"

And then just today, I saw a pedestrian start crossing into an intersection, AGAINST a "Do Not Walk" sign.  When a driver almost hit him, he started screaming at the driver, pointing out that HE was in a CROSS WALK.  This guy was in his 50's...old enough to know better.  Yeah, I know, pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way, but that doesn't make them always right.

Okay, it's not Wednesday, but I have a question...and it's an actual reference question from an actual reference librarian who hasn't been able to find the answer for a patron.  Jay (the aforementioned actual reference librarian) knows that I know musicals and thought I might know where this lyric comes from, but I don't.  Anyway, what the patron remembers is:

"When you're in love, it's Grand Central Station."

or,

"It's Grand Central Station when you're in love."

Does this (or any variation of it) sound familiar to anyone??

Please let me know (if you know) and I'll pass on the information to Jay, the actual (and paid for it) reference librarian.

Thank you...you may now return to your regular HHW postings. ;D

I've only done it when there was a line at the express lane, so when I say something..."Excuse me, but this is the express lane"  then everyone else does the stare, like "are you moving?" look.  If they didn't move, I don't think I'd take it farther, so far I haven't had to find out

I believe the correct line should be "When you are in love, it's Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital."  But perhaps that is merely a personal opinion.

MARY CHIND/THE REGISTER

Katrina Holub is thrilled when she learns her two cats will be allowed to stay in the same cage together after she located them at the Kirkwood College emergency animal shelter in Cedar Rapids Friday. Holub holds Nai Nai, a cat she adopted just three months ago. She had put in a request to have the animals rescued from her SW Cedar Rapids home and will continue to leave them at the shelter until she has a place to live. "Momma's looking for a new home," she tells the cats during her visit.

Can someone familiar with the Doyle Company explain something to me--are there are offstage musicians, too, or at least a pianist?  For example, on Another Hundred People?  Or was it pre-programmed Disclavier stuff, or somesuch?  Thanks--need the info for my review.

There were no musicians off-stage.  However, upstage right there was another keyboard and some mallet percussion set up.  They were all played live, nothing was sequenced.  Most of the more difficult keyboard stuff was played by Matt Castle who was established as a pianist/music director/conductor before he was cast in John Doyle's Company.  -And he played "strolling" bass in the show too.

I believe there are a few shots where they show them playing upstage left.

So sad about George Carlin.  When he was here he forgot his words several time and had to read part of it. He apologized profusely, but he was still really fun to see.

Thank you all for the welcome home wishes.  I've been over on the Cleopatra couch and will now get ready for a good night's sleep (which you don't get in a hospital!)

My home care nurse is coming between 8 and 9am to give me my first shot of the day and to draw blood.  For the second shot, either Richard has to administer it or I have to do it myself :P  Fortunately, I think tomorrow is the last day for these.

Richard's older brother and his family are bringing dinner to us tomorrow evening.  Isn't that nice?

'night!

Nice things for nice people.

Back from rehearsal - a long rehearsal.  We worked from eleven to six with about fifteen minutes off to eat sandwiches.  It was a very productive rehearsal, however.  I actually somehow managed to stage the entire show - we'd already done the opening number, so that was done.  I had four full numbers where I had to do Kimmelography and one of them, the Sinatra/Sammy Davis, Jr. arrangement of Me And My Shadow, came out really well - very pleased with it, since I was making it up as we went along.  Kevin and Sean look great doing it, and once they have it in their bones it will be really fun.  The show's structure seems pretty good to me.  I adjusted a lot of the patter, cutting here, focusing there, making the jokes have a point - all that sort of thing.  It's going to be a good show, and the boys play off each other very well.

Has anybody here ever watched THE HILLS?

I always thought i would hate it (plus i don't get mtv or mtv canada). But mtv canada's sister station (ctv) started airing part of season 3. And i've found myself addicted.

So i went to mtv.com but you cannot watch anything if you are outside the US. But then i went to mtv.ca and they have every episode. So i am going to start watching it from the beginning!

My roommate and I catch it every now and again. The girls on it can be a bit ridiculous, but it's good a good mindless guilty pleasure.

I watched the bonus documentaries on the second disc, too. One was called "Advertising the American Dream" and it featured real ad people describing the rationale behind marketing in the 1950s and 1960s. Really interesting stuff. It was the longest of the featurettes.

And all the featurettes were in high definition which certainly doesn't always happen.
Title: Re:TWIDDLING

There was a MAD MEN Music Sampler which was basically an ad (!) for the soundtrack CD featuring 13 selections from it. Some are pop recordings from the era used in the show from the likes of Rosie Clooney, McGuire Sisters, Vic Damone. Ella. Other cuts were themes written for the show.

And there was an interactive section where the costume designer, the hair stylist, and the production designer each presented a series of pictures with accompanying audio commentaries about their reasons for doing things the way they were done.

Well done.

Oh dang,  I just read that Gene Persson died. He starred in two of my all time favorite movies, EARTH VS THE SPIDER (1958) and BLOODLUST (1961). He died in NY on June 6th of a heart attack at age 74.

I had tried in vain to get him to do an interview about his career, but he wouldn't have any of it.

After he left acting he produced YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN.

Gene is the one in the glasses in this shot from BLOODLUST! (note June Kenney being held by Robert Reed).

Thanks, Jose, that's exactly what I ultimately surmised and included in my review, but it's nice to have confirmation.

A man apparently spray painting graffiti on an overpass fell Saturday night onto the 5 Freeway in East Los Angeles, authorities said.

Several motorists told authorities that the man had possibly broken his back at about 9:45 p.m. and had a can of spray paint clutched in his hands as he lay on the freeway near the Main Street off-ramp, said California Highway Patrol spokesman David Porter.
