Title: PROCRASTINATING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes did not procrastinate, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been procrastinating since the year 1.

Marriage marathon in West Hollywood

The gay wedding boom is also good for business. Tom Rosa, owner of the Cake And Art bakery in West Hollywood, which specializes in custom-designed cakes, said business has tripled in the last week, and on one day he did as many consultations as he usually does in a month.

Rainbow-colored cakes are popular, but some couples are wild for a silver-studded all black cake, said Rosa, who baked four cakes for same-sex couples marrying at West Hollywood Park.

Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland for another round of edits and a discussion of the Volume Two layout. Dependng on whether a check arrives in today's mail, I am debating telling a client that I will be doing no more work for him.  After a week of "the check's in the mail" - and it's now eleven days of it - I'm not sure if the deception's coming from the client or his accountant, but I'm in a tight financial bind until this check arrives, and much as I like working, I don't need tsuris from anyone.

So much for having a second day off.

Yesterday, before der B and I headed to the store for a few items, there was a call from work, asking me to come in this afternoon and work from 3:30 to 9:30.

So, when we got to the store, I confirmed that I'll be there.

Looking over the daily schedule while Michelle (the assistant front end manager) made the appropriate notes, I asked what had happened.

"Oh, one of the girls didn't show up tonight and didn't call in, so we want to make sure we're covered."

She pointed to the name of the particular flake.  "I don't think I've met her," I commented.

"And you probably never will," Michelle shook her head.

We're having lots of this kind of fun this summer.  Just last Saturday I learned that one of the new gay guys on registers has been fired, for perpetual tardiness (a daily occurance for him, apparently).  And there have been a few others who have quickly disappeared.

Just as well.  We're also at the start of Russian Students Who Want To Work In The States Because We Pay So Well time, and have picked up a couple or three cashiers from that pool, including a fellow named Sergay, who resembles a young and cute Garrison Keillor, if that isn't too much of a contradiction.

Life at the store remains interesting.

Der B and I will still have time to go to the Farmer's Market - we'll just have to go early, instead of later.

Zilch on TV for me tonight. The NCIS episode is a rerun from last season which I recentl rewatched from the DVD set. So nothing of interest for me.

This is good since I need seriously to finish MAD MEN today. The Criterions involving Mishima come out a week from today, and I need to get to work on them. WALKER, TEXAS RANGER-Season Five is also a July 1 release, and it's a 7-disc set. Argh!

And what exactly happened on your first "unofficial" date?

We wrangled ants, swept floors, fed pigs, painted the face of an actor with liquid paper substitute and then hit him with giant typwriter keys, cooked pancakes for a crew over an open fire in the NC mountains, marched in a Founder's Day parade in Iowa, drank lots of coffee, rode in gondolas in Texas, spied on bingo players in Missouri while being spied upon by a curious cat, and were attacked by teamsters in St. Louis, and plotted revenge on a tyrannical director. Basically, we happened to fall in love while working on a lot of very strange jobs together.

It is the film that brought us the wonderful song SHAKALAK BOOM, BOOM.

Thank you all for the rest of the condolences. I won't be able to go to the memorial service but I was glad to hear that the family, even though they are against cremation, honored my cousin's wishes, which she apparently expressed to her step-father years ago.

I have played many a strange wedding request in my life, two of the more memorable being:

The daughter of a hippie couple was getting hitched outdoors in Portland's beautiful Washington Park Rose Gardens.  Their bridal march?  Stairway to Heaven.

One of my favorite weddings ever was a couple where the groom owned one of Portland's little "art house" movie theaters (in fact, I remember it was showing "Land of the Pharoahs" when they came to see me to plan the music).  Because he owned the movie house, he wanted all of the music in the service to be from films.  It turned out he was a big Lani Hall fan (he saw my Mendes CD collection when he came), so he had me sing "Never Say Never Again" as seating music, but the best part was he had me play Monty Norman's 007 Theme for his entrance and he came running down the aisle in various Bond poses holding a toy gun!  It was actually cute, as weird as it sounds.

I'm a day or two behind MattH (blame the site I review for, which either gets things ridiculously early--like months--or a day or two before street date), so I just started MAD MEN last night.  Nice reveal at the end of Episode 1.  I assume Draper and Ms. JAP (that's a technical term) are going to get involved.

We also have NOIR, another anime series which is supposed to have a great score, to check out today.  And I have a new Criterion release of the only film Mishima made.

For you musical theater fans (and who here isn't?  ;)  )--I am currently MDing and, heaven forfend, directing, a Revue that is being presented at a neat little theater out on Portland's far east side at Mt. Hood Community College (where the well-known Mt. Hood Jazz Festival is held every year).  Anyhoo, in the unbelievable department--they asked me to put together a Revue, which I thought would be easy.  Hire a few friends, ask them what tunes they want to do, then string them together in a coherent way.  But NOOOOOO.  They are doing "Bus Stop" as their dramatic presentation those weeks and decided I needed to build the show around the "Bus Stop" set.  Isn't that insane?  So I had to tweak the songs the actors asked to do (plus some interpolations I forced on them, like my arrrangement of Another Hundred People/West End Avenue), and come up with a plot that plops all of these folk down in the "Bus Stop Cafe."  Oy.

Various people tried to help her over the years. (I used to fantasize about going to Boulder to find her and try to help her anonymously, but it was something I never had the resources to do.)  I don't think there was ever any real stability in her life out there, and she apparently wasn't capable of functioning completely on her own. I think various people out there looked out for her over the years, but I'm not sure it was altruistic or because they knew she had a big trust fund. I imagine that some of my familiy members are probably feeling guilty, too, that they didn't do more, but they probably would have had to abandon their lives entirely to be able to care for her properly.

It's hard to understand how someone who seemed to have everything going for her could end up like she did. I have to just believe that she is at peace, now.

I'm up, I'm up.  I slept pretty well last night.  I also had a very strange dream.  I was at some restaurant or place or something, and I ran into Stewart Granger, who looked older (he had hair dye covering his famous huge gray sideburns).  We sat and talked and I told him what was an endless version of the story of when I had to go to a chiropractor and he was coming out of the room on my first visit.  For some reason it took about an hour to tell a two-line story but he was very gracious and listened and we were like long lost buddies, and we agreed to stay in touch.  I went back to the people I was with, and when we were leaving I caught a glimpse of Stewart Granger walking down the street.  One of his legs was a peg leg, like Long John Silver, one of his legs was real, and he had a third prosthetic leg which was just sort of dragging along.  I wondered why I hadn't noticed that at the table during our chat.

Now, I wasn't thinking of Stewart Granger, I haven't seen Stewart Granger in a film in ages, I didn't watch Long John Silver recently, so what the HELL was I dreaming?

Was there never a Original Broadway Cast recording of MISS SAIGON?  I find the London Cast recordings and a 1995 Studio Cast recording, but nothing about Broadway.

No, DR TCB - there was no OBC of Miss Saigon, just as there was no OBC of Phantom.

Neither Starlight Express nor Aspects of Love had OBCs, either.

Maybe that's a good thing. ::)

Dependent upon who you listen to, DR MBarnum, that spider may be an omen of good luck for you.

Well, I suspect it will be an omen of bad luck as it will likely crawl on my while I am driving on the freeway, scaring the bejeebers out of me thus causing a multi car pile-up on I-5 with my poor Hyundai and I at the bottom of the twisted wreckage.

The Dream O Matic 6000 says that MR BK's nocturnal muses indicate a desire to visit Old Blighty but is unable to find a way to make it happen.  He will stay home with friends, but still yearn to travel, even though he views those from foreign lands as somewhat un-enlightened.

Back from the Farmer's Market.

We snagged some great looking tomatoes, which will go great with the steak and fries I'm cooking up tonight.

Zucchini.  I do enjoy zucchini.

And some beets and potatoes, both Peruvian purples and banana fingerlings.  They should be good roasted together, maybe with some carrots added and dressed nicely.

Cool!  I'd heard that RTD was not going to be with the show anymore.  I just hope that it at least stays as good as it's been.
Technically, RTD will still be with Who thru 2009, but it's not being done as a series next year.  Instead, we will be seeing three, maybe four specials, including the annual Christmas special.  This is due to Tennant having theater commitments to keep, including playing Hamlet.

Beginning in 2010, the series will be helmed by Steven Moffat, whose Who track record is pretty good.  He's written "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Blink" (and wow, has that one won awards hand over fist!), and the current "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead".

Sounds somewhat similar to the handling of the new TORCHWOODs. It won't be a normal 13 episode season but rather a 5-episode miniseries which may bring the series to a close (that hasn't been decided yet).

As you know, I sometimes have this problem with vendors who should know better.  Give it until Friday - if it's not here, call the singer and tell him/her that you cannot wait any longer, and that clearly the check isn't arriving and you need him/her to either drop it by or Fed Ex it.  Be nice about it and if nice doesn't work we'll just put it in a post here at haineshisway.com - we KNOW that works :)

Back from the California Pizza Kitchen, who have just priced themselves out of my business.  I've been watching this happen for two years, and today there is yet another new menu with yet higher prices, and they need to learn that they cannot do this ever few months.  And by the looks of the crowd at prime lunch time, they're going to learn it quickly - the restaurant, which is normally jammed from 12:30 to 2:00 was only half full.  Since Mr. Hunt only ordered an egg roll appetizer for lunch, I did the same - the spinach artichoke dip.  Said dip used to come in a nice big bowl and said bowl was always filled to the top.  Today's came in a slightly smaller bowl and was only two-thirds filled.  When I began ordering this dish years ago, it was $5.99.  That seemed pricey for an appetizer, but I really liked the dip as a starter, to share.  Then it went up to $6.99, then to $7.99, and today it hit $9.49, which is the price of some of their sandwiches.  There are now only two or three things on the menu under ten bucks, and many of the pastas are up to around sixteen bucks.  Enough, say I.

I'm fascinated that it was a Granger -- Stewart, not Farley -- who was in your dream and so active a participant.  I'm fascinated that it was Farley -- and not Stewart -- who portrayed Guy Haines in "Strangers on a Train."

I'm looking for linkages and cannot find one beyond the name Granger.

I wish they'd go ahead and write off psychobitch Sophie, mostly because the writing for this group of characters is so pathetic and inept, besides completely out of character. Oy!

Wedding songs.
I provided a recording of "If Ever You're in My Arms Again" (Flack & Bryson). I suggested perhaps they meant "Tonight I Celebrate My Love for You" and included that!
My nephew's band played "This Time" (Troy Shondell) for one wedding.
(This time we're really breaking up)

DP's Sister and brother-in-law had an Oasis Song,"Wonderwall" for their wedding.  Of course they could have had "Don't Look Back in Anger" from the same album. It was the second marriage for both.

Good Evening!

Well... Things are getting better in the rehearsal room.  Still far from ideal, but at least better.  However, as we were leaving rehearsal today, we received a call from the central office informing us that the "supervisor" from Cameron MacIntosh's office will be flying in Sunday, and in attendance at rehearsal on Monday and Tuesday.  -He was not supposed to come in until next Wednesday.  Well...

The stager/choreographer has been working on the "dance show" this week, and was going to start staging the ALW show on Sunday - after I had taught all the music.  Well...  Looks like we're going to be scrambling a bit over the next few days.

Whew!

Well... We're off on Saturday.  And, apparently, it's only around $5.00 to take the Tri-Rail down to Miami, so... We shall see.

-Now if DR ArnoldMBrockman happens to be in the area, well...

*But I also have a friend who may come over from Ft. Myers to see me this weekend too.  So, I'm sure I'll be having some sort of fun while I'm down here.

My favorite wedding gig was an All Stevie Wonder Songs wedding for a couple that was getting married on Andrews Air Force Base.  Various relatives of the couple throughout the ceremony, and they all were amazingly good singers.  -And I turned out to be the only non-related part of the entertainment.

Shortly I shall be on my way to rehearsal.  Mr. McDermott is not feeling well, so tonight will just be Kevin.  Apparently, this is, I'm told, a "thing" and it's one that will have to stop.  The fact that we had three rehearsals and we won't have half the act in one of them is not good.  It's always fascinating that months go by without illness, and then when one has a three day period in which to rehearse, illness occurs for one of the rehearsals.

Not really.  The "actual" melodies do teach themselves more or less, however, the harmonies and arrangements that have been "put upon" those melodies can get quite intricate and tricky at times.

-And trying to "teach" two Australian women, two English women and one Swiss woman how to sound like "Soul Sisters" (for "Jesus Christ Superstar") has proven especially challenging.

I wish they'd go ahead and write off psychobitch Sophie, mostly because the writing for this group of characters is so pathetic and inept, besides completely out of character. Oy!

I miss the days when stories were interesting, defined plotlines and umbrella stories, multi-faceted characters....

Thank god I have tapes!

At least! There are about 700 forest fires burning in Northern California.

LOL!

I have now had my last shot (administered by my dental hygienist/EMT sister-in-law) and don't have to have another blood test until Friday.  Still on blood thinner pills - probably for the next 6 months.

But at least no more needles for a couple of days!

I had a really good evening of viewing. I began by finishing the last two episodes of MAD MEN. Except for one absurd plot twist, the show ends magnificently and primes us wonderfully for season two. Can't wait for the new season.

July is going to be a busy premiere month with THE CLOSER, BURN NOTICE, PSYCH, MONK, PROJECT RUNWAY, and MAD MEN all beginning in July (And BIG BROTHER also for some of you).

There is a perfectly marvelous (a CABARET reference) documentary in the MAD MEN set taking it from the writing stage all the way to the production of the first season which took many, many years. That documentary is more than an hour long but it covers every facet of the production.

With time on my own tonight after finishing up MAD MEN, I watched THE OMEN. I got the new special edition for Christmas and am just now getting to it. Doesn't look terrific (the film has never looked all that wonderful) but far, far better than it's ever looked before on home video.

I enjoyed revisiting it. Glad the old laserdisc can now bite the dust.

I watched some more of the MURDER SHE WROTE episode I started yesterday, but I didn't quite get to the end. I wanted to come upstairs and get to work on the rest of the MAD MEN review and get it posted.

Len Cariou is also guest starring on the show, once again as Michael Hagerty, MI-6 agent.

Another second wedding song is "Another Wedding Song," from Closer Than Ever (http://www.amazon.com/Closer-Than-Ever-Original-Recording/dp/B000003EZV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1214344617&sr=1-1), written by David Shire for his marriage to Didi Conn...it was the second marriage for both of them. :)

At our wedding, we played Joe Jackson's "Be My Number 2"

"Won't you be my number two?
Me and number one are through"...

BIG Pet peeve:  When my "supposed" friends call me at a specific time in the evenings that I've told them not to call after, and wake me up!  Grrrrr!  I was just falling asleep and the phone rings.  I ignore it.  The machine picks up, no message left. Less than a minute goes by.  Riiiinnng!  So I answer as I see a last name I recognize.  I'm gonna #$%!! that girl!  No, not really.  I know I'm not working but I still sleep and I'm sure my sister is in the other room feeling the same way as I do but I'm to chicken to go in there.  :)

Umm...no. ;) And actually, it was her crotch.  At first I thought that you were talking about the woman who had the grinder and had sparks flying out from her crotch.  I just saw the guy who had the flames shooting out of his crotch. :P
