Ah.  An effort is needed, then.

Well...they can simply join the forum and show up with the online users.

No extra effort is required to see them after that.

I should have been in bed two hours ago.

I should be sawing logs and building a cabin.

Instead, I'm talking (mostly) to myself and said unseen guests.

I had to get up and read the Marietta paper. There have been items of extreme interest to us on the front pages the last few days.

In the Atlanta paper yesterday, there was a story about a young couple (the guy is an editor who used to work for the Cartoon Network) who bought the last old movie theatre still operating in Atlanta. It's an art house that shows second run films. We both decided that we need to actively support their efforts. Such a noble thing should be encouraged!

I liked the title of the article: "Screen Savers".

Maybe Laura should inspect those Passion Vinces more carefully:

Tibetan nomad Lhamotsa, who goes by one name, earns a living gathering caterpillar fungus. The gathering season is short, about 40 days, but during that time she can earn $1,000 a week. The fungus is prized in traditional medicine and is said to boost energy and the immune system, and sexual function.

I am having trouble understanding DD Sherlock's exact problem.  Is DR Jane saying that a foxtail spiky plant is embedded inside his paw?     :-\

FOXTAIL DANGERS (http://www.cccgdr.com/resources/foxtails.htm)

Quote
When dog owners talk about "foxtails," they are actually speaking of the seed portion of the foxtail grass. Once foxtail grasses dry out, the seed detaches easily and sticks readily to clothing and fur. Foxtail seeds can enter a dog's body in a variety of ways and once they enter, they are like a fish hook: The seed only wants to move forward, not backward. It's most common for a foxtail seed to enter a dog's body through the skin, nose, ears, paws, and eyes. Cases have even been reported of foxtails being lodged in male dogs' urethras. One vet mentioned how a foxtail seed found in a dog's lung was believed to have entered initially through the dog's paw! Foxtail seeds are tenacious!

Foxtail seeds are relatively small, so detecting them once they enter a dog's body can be difficult. Vets usually rely on telltale symptoms. Foxtail seeds in the ears, nose, and eyes are very serious and can ultimately be life-threatening if they are not treated promptly.

If a foxtail seed has been inhaled and lodged in the nasal cavity, the dog will sneeze repeatedly and violently, often banging their nose on the floor with each sneeze in a futile attempt to dislodge the seed. It is often possible to sedate the animal, locate the seed with an otoscope, and remove it using special forceps.

If a foxtail seed is lodged in the paw or under the coat, a lump will usually form that is painful to touch. Depending on how deep the foxtail seed has travelled, they can usually be surgically removed.

I was discussing a Fox yesterday!
One was an important character in a Clive Barker novel.

Clive Barker is so good.  IMHO his work makes Stephen King look like a writer of Grade School stories. Barker is an amazing writer. "Literate" in a way that is not present in most writers of the genre. (OK I've not read that many) Of course he does have an interesting take on horror with its eroticism elements.

A pity Mr Barker's writing does not work as film! "Hell Raiser" was so bad! (and Mr Barker directed - which may have been the problem!).

I don't have anything in my DVD/CD player, because I'm traveling and I don't have access to one.

 :'(

I looking forward to getting home next week, so that I can watch the dozen or so DVDs that have arrived in my absence.

On the other hand, while away, I finally got to see SPAMALOT on stage (in San Antonio) with Gary Beach, and on Sunday, we're going to see ALTAR BOYZ here in Austin.

I know nothing about that show.  Do any of you?

Congrats to DR Vixmom on your weight loss.

I am trying to lose a few pounds. Since all my summer pants did not fit.
I don't know how much i have lost (i've been doing it less than a month).
But the first pairs of pants are fitting.

I'm thinking i must have at least 10 lbs to go.

I'm cutting out all sweets and breads/pastas/rice. And trying to keep control of my carbs intake.

I feel much better (although i have not been able to exercise all week due to my foot).

I cannot believe it. But to me the voting audience has gotten it so totally right. And the judges too.  Last night my least favorite teams (all 3) were in the bottom 3. And the judges voted out who i thought she go. Although comfort and thayne could go too and i would not care.
I don't think i ever said. But on wed my absolute favs were chelsea and mark (i love them together). They are such a great couple. I think that makes all the difference. Plus they had the best choreographay. And i also loved katee and joshua. I guess my third fav couple is kherington and twitch. And i like will. But do not love jessica yet.

Jane asked yesterday if Mark and I have any pets. Yes, we do. And here's two trivia questions. The dog is obviously a poodle, but...
a. what breed is the cat?
b. why did I choose these two specific breeds?

I once posted this last question on a dog-owners discussion board and no one guessed the right answer, even though they knew what breed the cat was. But you're all much smarter than them, I'm sure.

The cat is smart enough to go between the bars and escape the bonds imposed by it's human captors, the dog says "Oh Boy! I'm outside!" and doesn't think of going between the bars of the gate  ;)

My apologies to poodles who I know are smart dogs, but hey, cats rule ;D

It has been renewed for a third season but we'll not likely see it until 2009. It's the biggest hit Showtime has ever had in terms of audience size.

And DR Tom, I'd be surprised if you continue to think of him as David for much longer. As much as I adored SIX FEET UNDER, he's just mesmerizing as Dexter.

Here are the lists of semifinalists for the Best Drama and Best Comedy Emmys to be announced in mid-July.

The best drama semifinalists are: Boston Legal ; Damages ; Dexter ; Friday Night Lights ; Grey's Anatomy ; House ; Lost ; Mad Men ; The Tudors; and The Wire.

Semifinalists for best comedy are Curb Your Enthusiasm ; Entourage ; Family Guy ; Flight of the Conchords ; The Office ; Pushing Daisies ; 30 Rock ; Two and a Half Men ; Ugly Betty and Weeds.

And now here are my reactions:

Drama: I cannot believe they have BOSTON LEGAL as a semifinalist (it made the finals last year). It was a really lousy season for the show, and it's SO undeserving. I'd much rather have seen THE CLOSER, BURN NOTICE, LIFE, or ELI STONE up for that slot.

Comedy: Where is THE BIG BANG THEORY? MY NAME IS EARL? DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (which had a GREAT renaissance this season)? Very, very disappointing choices.

My five Emmy nominees from that drama list: DEXTER, DAMAGES, MAD MEN, LOST, and GREY'S ANATOMY. (I'd have included HOUSE except all that stuff early in the season with the selection of the new team and the misuse of the old team being given nothing to do even though they're still in the opening credits just didn't sit well with me.)

Of the comedies: THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, UGLY BETTY, ENTOURAGE, and PUSHING DAISIES.

The USPS has "today" to win my affection, despite Jose's praise of them in yesterday's posts.

My first Deep Discount package still has not arrived.  I got my shipping notice the morning of July 16.  Of course, if one were to put a fine point on it (and I don't think for one moment there aren't one or two of you who would do that if I didn't do it first!), the shipping suggests 5-10 business days is the norm for packages to arrive.

Well, first, I've never gotten anything from them in five days.  More often than not, it's later rather than sooner.  And I don't understand that since several DRs here indicate they get their packages within a week.

I'm obviously located in a postal hub to hell.

That photograph of Colin Farrell just about sums up everything I hate about today's actors and the people who emulate their looks.  If that's appealing, well, I just don't know what.

I see another side of this:  Farrell was at the beach with his son.  They were playing and having a good time.  This was not a PR opportunity.  It was just father and son (and a friend) having recreational fun.  And, as usual, a paparazzi turns up and starts snapping photographs.

I don't know about anyone else here, but if someone is going to snap my photo, I'm going to need prep time!  This is more a problem with invasive photographers than it is with a celebrity looking bad in a public place.  If you are rolling around in the surf and sand with your kid, you should never have to worry about your "public", IMO.

An inflated $.02 worth!   ;D

Last night, I gushed with excitement over winning an auction for $10.  It was a lot of 5 lobby cards from the movie "Sailor of the King" which starred Jeffrey Hunter.  One of the lobby cards -- of Hunter on a cliff overlooking a ship and the sea --  has turned up, from time to time, on EBay.  And each time I bid what I considered a "fair price" ($20-$25) via e-snipe, I'd later discovered others had far grander values ($35-$50) in mind for it.

So...without further ado....this is "that" card  which I, essentially, paid $2 for (5 lcs X $2 = $10):

These are the young thespians that have been in my way for two weeks and leaving cups and sandwich wrappers all over the theatre....and one of the young ladies ripped the handle off the toilet in the ladies lounge....so much for culture.

It is so amazing that some of those thespians cut and style their hair and wear different clothes so that they almost look like guys.

Friday afternoon greetings!  I've had quite a morning, but at least it's not ending with admission to the hospital.  I am home and about to crash for a nap.

After my visit to the foot surgeon, I am no longer bionic.  They offered to let me keep the pins he removed from my foot (to make earrings or wind chimes), but I was afraid we'd confuse them with the pins we put in the turkey at Thanksgiving.  Just need now to keep healing, but I can shower without 3 plastic bags on my foot.

Then we went to the lab for today's blood test and I have one piece of advice - never go dehydrated into a blood draw.  It took 2 techs  and 4 tries.

Richard is lunching at The Grande Finale with his former co-workers and will bring me a fabulous dessert.

Thanks, Mike!  Mine are in a box, too.  Alas!

My "dream" is that I will some day have a larger place where I can actually have a "video room".  I plan on constructing a marquee on which I can display posters and stills and lobby cards for whatever movie I plan on watching.  Ideally, I'd have friends over for dinner, followed by the movie, and they could enjoy the "collectibles" I've acquired over the years.

So the cat won't run away, because the cat is declawed, because the cat is the new genetically engineered hypoallergenic cat and is too valuable to be mixing with the ferel cats in the neighborhood.   Because you love the cat?

Those are all very good guesses, but none of them are exactly what I was looking for. The cat is white with blue eyes. 85% of all white blue-eyed cats are deaf. Therefore, she can't hear cars coming or coyotes nearby. I've always had indoor/outdoor cats in the past and it's true they don't live as long (mine lived 10 years), but sometimes I think if I could give a cat the choice between living 10 years, getting to run free and chase butterflies, or 20 years cooped up in a boring house, they'd choose the shorter life. My concern with this cat is that because she is deaf, she wouldn't even make it 10 years.

My cats have always been indoor-only cats, but they are free to sit out on the balcony when I am home.  Since both of them are declawed there isn't much choice in the matter.

Yes, it is. I won't make anyone guess if she's a Cornish Rex or a Devon Rex. She's a Devon. Devons have a flatter face and shorter head that gives them a pixie look. A Cornish Rex has a much longer muzzle.

I am having trouble understanding DD Sherlock's exact problem.  Is DR Jane saying that a foxtail spiky plant is embedded inside his paw?     :-\

We are having the same issue.  The doctor at the vet thinks there is a strong possibility he has a foxtail in his foot.  This looks very much like the same problem he had a couple of months ago I referred to as the "whatever".  The other vet, our regular vet, didn't think that was  foxtail.  When we saw this new thing, that looked like the old one only not as bad, we figured it was the same.  We began with the paw soaks & expected the vet to give Sherlock an antibiotic to take, not to need surgery.

The problem with foxtails is the only way to know for sure is to go in and look for them.  So we scheduled the exploratory surgery.

This morning we chickened out and canceled.  We are doing the paw soaks & have him on antibiotics & praying it isn't a foxtail.  We have a follow up appointment for Tuesday afternoon.

If Sherlock were in any kind of pain or limping we wouldn't hesitate, but he isn't & it looks 100% better today after the antibiotic shot yesterday.

DerBrucer, thank you for the "dangers of foxtails" post.  Obviously it was a difficult decision to make not having the surgery.  Sometimes you have to go with your gut feeling, and we were both having that same feeling.

Amy

My sister and niece have an indoor/outdoor (mainly outdoor) cat, Casper, who is 14 or 15 years old.  They live in a cul-de-sac and there are other cats in the area with no dogs, so Casper's been living the good life.

George, e-mail Ghostlight and tell them you want a replacement case - they'll be happy to send you one, I'm quite sure.

Thanks for the info!  However, the library where I work is going to order five copies of the CD.  Since they repackage digipak CDs into heavy-duty-library-use plastic jewel cases (and throw away the original plastic hubs), I was just going to swap out one of the library copies for mine. ;) It's a win-win situation and Ghostlight won't have to pay postage to get it to me. :) Of course, this is only because the library is ordering this particular CD.

A pity Mr Barker's writing does not work as film! "Hell Raiser" was so bad! (and Mr Barker directed - which may have been the problem!).

A friend of mine wrote the HELLRAiSER II & III scripts (he's British, as well) so I'm going to blame Mr. Barker! :-)

He met my girlfriend and former editing assistant on III (he also wrote the story for that one) and they fell in love and married here in GA before moving out to LA. We had breakfast with them when we were out there for the SACCO AND VANZETTI premiere.

He said he was working on a film with Errol Morris but I don't know what's happening with it...

There is a production with Peter Pears and Peter Glossop that will be released on DVD July 8, 2008.  It's probably not the version you want, but I thought you should know about itl.

I do, thank you. It was pretty much the same cast used by Britten for the first LP recording of the work. Ufortunately, neither Sir Thomas allen nor Peter Glossop is particularly my idea of a Bily Budd.

I was not able to watch Kathy Griffin's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST today. DUring the recording last night, something was wrong with the audio transmission, and a loud "yowling" sound was recorded for the entire show. I just deleted it, and set the DVR to pick up the next broadcast which will be sometime tomorrow. So I won't see it probably until Sunday.

Otherwise, I watched a BUNCH of WALKER TEXAS RANGER episodes. They are all so mediocre. The villains are always obvious. The villains can shoot worth a darn whereas Walker's aim is always perfect. The plots are very predictable (e.g. Walker's partner was accused of shooting and seriously injuring a six-year old boy during a nighttime shootout with a bad guy. I knew instantly it would be the bad guy's bullet that hit the kid, not Walker's partner. But there was a lot of angst - and much liquor consumed - as he felt bad about the situation and felt sorry for himself.)

I have a kitty gym in my living room, I have something under every window for them to look out of, we have tunnel type things and they are always finding things to play with.  They have so many toys that when people come into my living room they always say it looks like I have a 2 year old.

The best time they had was when the bat got in and before I could get out of bed they had flown through the air (we play with the cat dancer toys every day) swatted the bat and killed the poor thing. I do not like bats, but I don't think they need to die.

My sister and niece have an indoor/outdoor (mainly outdoor) cat, Casper, who is 14 or 15 years old.  They live in a cul-de-sac and there are other cats in the area with no dogs, so Casper's been living the good life.

Okay, this is really freaky - MY cat's name is Casper too. The breeder I bought her from had a strange habit of giving male names to her female kittens. Casper's littermate was named Daxter, who was also a female. I thought having a female cat named Casper was sort of kitsch, so I kept it. The poodle, on the other hand, was named Tinker Bell by the breeder. There was no way in hell I was keeping that name. Coming up with the dog's name was tricky because I wanted to use another white cartoon character name, but could only come up with "Kimba the white lion." But she's not a lion or even a cat; she's a dog, so I altered the name to Kimber.

By the way, since "Speed Racer" was made into a movie and "Kimba" used to air right after "Speed Racer," on the Saturday morning cartoon line-up, do you think a "Kimba" movie will be made in the near future?

Yes.  Back in 1992, my male cat, Dickens, discovered new talents when a flock of swallows seemingly got sidetracked in their migratory route when I was living in Italy.  They were swooping for days, and Dickens's predator instincts kicked in rather quickly...he'd scrunch down, stay perfectly still and wait and watch -- and then he'd LEAP INTO THE AIR, all his legs outstretched, and then he'd swat one of the birds down.

He brought them all to me, and I put the stunned creatures in a "holding area" until they'd recovered sufficiently to fly off.  Dickens always looked puzzled to me as I did that...I think he wanted me to mash them up and serve them to him in a bowl.  Over a period of several days, he swatted down five or six.  All of them, to my knowledge, recovered.

Dickens, RIP, buddy!

I know nothing about that show.  Do any of you?

A national tour (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119066.html) is starting next month...so it's not the production that you're seeing, but this specific run is coming to Olympia, where I live!  I usher a lot for shows that come to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119066.html) and I've even worked backstage on shows (mostly with wardrobe).  I will definitely either see this show or work backstage...and not actually see the show....but I get paid for that. :)

What I don't enjoy is my inability to get out of my drvieway to go anywhere, and my inability of getting back to my home in a reasonable amount of time.

This is what I will get to experience for the first time at our new house, when the Peachtree Road Race comes down Peachtree Street on the 4th of July. It's a HUGE race, and only a few blocks from the house so we'll probably walk down to see it and then head to Marietta for the parade. (I don't want to go, but my mom wants me to, so....)

Love the dog and kitty pix, Amy!

My ancient cat was an indoor outdoor one until he was about 18 and lost his hearing, and was no longer allowed out unsupervised.

Of our 4 new cats, the two boys came from a shelter and have never been outdoor cats. The two girls were outdoor strays and have no desire to go back out again. Because one of the females has a flea allergy, and I've spent at least a thousand bucks to help her deal with it, I'm glad that none of them go outside. They play with each other, they have toys scattered all over the house that they take out of their toy basket, and when we get home we play with them, too.

They also have a cat door out to a screened porch which overlooks a deck. I line the deck railing with birdseed in the morning, and we all watch the birds while I'm having breakfast. I'm sure there would be less birds if these guys were outside; they are very fast and would love to catch some birds.

They also have their kitty condo where they can lie in their beds and look out the window. So, like Cillaliz, I think they've got it good even though they don't go out. (We also have seen coyotes, owls and foxes in our yard; more reasons to keep them in!)

Good Evening!

Whew!

Well, the day started off well.  Some of the non-singers actually started to open up their mouths.  Some of them actually sang the right notes.  And some of them actually sounded "acceptable".  Alas, as the day went on... Well...

I'm doing what I can, and teaching what I'm supposed to teach.  And I'll just have to let the chips fall where they may.  If I knew that my encouraging and "pushing" could be properly implemented, I wouldn't feel so arbitrary.  Alas, for some of the people in this group, it's very much a case of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.  :-\

But tomorrow is a day off! -And I even brought in some English chocolate bars (Aero, Flake, Mars, etc.) for the cast.  -BOY! did they make a lot of noise when I revealed that box.

DR JoseSPiano, I'm sorry it's not very gratifying work.  If you had known then what you know now, would you still have accepted the job?

Probably.  Due to another project getting cancelled earlier this month, I needed something else to replace those bank deposits.

It's actually an easy gig, but, again, just very frustrating.  I just keep telling myself, "I did not cast them.  I did not cast them.  I did not cast them."

We ran the first part of the show at the end of today.  The "stager" knew that there were a lot of non-singers in the cast, but she had no idea just how lacking it would all end sounding in the group numbers.  However, we do have some incredible(!) soloists, so they're keeping me sane and smiling.

I got a call from a woman who was looking for an editor for one day, with a day on ohld, to do some crappy corporate job on a cheapo system in a bad part of town. I quoted her my Turner rate, which is a reduced "Frequent flyer" rate. She said she was used to paying about half of what I quoted her. I explained that since I was self-employed, I have to pay self-employment tax, my own insurance, SEP, etc so I really only see half of that rate anyway. She seemed quite put off and announced that she, too was self-employed and she knew how it worked. She asked if I could recommend anyone, but I don't know any editor who works for what she says she "always pays".

Thank god for the Turner networks!

So...

The round-trip fare to and from Miami is only $4.00(!?!?!?!?) from here on the Tri-Rail.  I still have to figure out how exactly to get to South Beach once I'm inside the Miami City Limits, but it looks like if I take the Tri-Rail to the airport, then I can take a bus (or two) to the beach.

It's a plan.  For now.  I think my travel plans tomorrow will be dependent upon what time I ended up waking up.  Uncle Jojo really could use a morning to sleep in.

Haven't decided if I'll cancel my tickets to the baseball game that day. Good evening fellow DR's.  I hope your day to day was better than it was yesterday.

NOW!  The questions...

DVD:  Kite Runner, I've had it for a week and haven't taken the time to sit and watch it yet.

CD....This is complicated, because I don't really use CD's, unless I'm burning one for in the car.  HOWEVER, I do make playlists.

It's all about slow jazz today and I have Wallace Rooney sweetly playing "Lost" in my ear.  Following that will be  "Smooch," again, by Wallace Rooney.  It may or may not be followed by Diana Krall, we'll see what happens.

Tonight is not the usual music night, I have a tendency to start with Diana Krall or Dave Brubeck and save Wallace Rooney for the end of the evening when I'll sit quietly in the dark, close my eyes and listen with glass of port in hand.  It's just that kind of music.   Perhaps I just needed that kind of relaxation right away.

Cill - YES.  Yesterday morning we had 5-6" of rain in 8-12 hours.  The rivers are up as well as the lakes and such.

When we get a lot of water really fast, since it's a cement jungle and hilly, the drainage system can't keep up and so the water pools up in the road at the bottom of the hills.  After it stops raining it manages to drain off in a few hours.

I watched the GLAAD Awards - who was that dreadful singer and why was she performing? - and then I watched Acts One and Two of the Royal Opera's beautiful production of Le Nozze di Figaro/i] with the latest bari-hunk Erwin Schrott.

I don't like David McVicar's insistence on staging the glorious overture which is needless business about the castle of the Count Almaviva; does he think audiences have a hard time with the concept of simply listenig to something? He does do a lot of funny business with evesdropping servants, and once the story begins, it's quite a gripping, very funny amorous tempest. He doesn't shy away from the brutality of the Count, which is good, and the wonderful Phillip Langridge does a funny turn as the foppish, maybe downright queer, Don Basilio, music master to the Countess and pimp to the servants.

The Cherubino is wonderful and I got all weepy from her "voi che sapete" through the glorious Act Two finale. Tomorrow night,I watch Acts Three and Four

Thank you George!  I really do think the funeral business is a calling, there are some unpleasant aspects to what I do but I really do love working with people.  I like being able to have a positive influence on a very difficult time in someone's life.

Oh, as for your question Cilla... basically Ben explained it... I stopped eating just for the sake of eating and I started paying more attemtion to what I was eating

Instead of a bagel with creamcheese I have a cup of oatmeal and some fruit

instead of three teaspoons of sugar in my coffee or tea I have one packet of Splenda

I eat no pasta or rice and rarely eat potatoes, I when I do it is human portions, not the supersized portions I was used to eating

I am eating lots of steamed veggies, spinach, brussell sprouts, carrots, broccoli, caulifower, squash

I eat lots of fruit, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, grapefruits

and lots of salads

I don't drink soda and don't eat cakes, pies, cookies, chocolates, ice cream  etc while watching the teevee... I still have the occassional sweet...

and I try to exercise a little every day whether I get to the gym or not...

and I take "Silver" multivitamins.. supposedly providing me with 100% of the necessary vitamins for a woman of my advanceed years

DR Matt H---do you know anything about the Best Actress in a Drama nominees? (Fingers crossed for Kyra!)

DR Ron is absolutely right. So far, at least, the Emmys have not announced the list of semifinalists in the acting categories. They did last year, so they may do so next week.

I would be shocked beyond belief if Kyra doesn't get nominated.

And no, they aren't drinking water.

Will you be casting irons from your balcony as you watch the food festival DR TCB?

I must be old.  This is the closest I have ever come to calling the police on the rowdies across the way.

I want to say "No comment" and leave it at that...but I can't.  Just to and from costume changes.  Not actually during, besides, that's when i was playing.

I started my Bollywood movie...AANKHEN (2002). It is about a former bank employee who plans a fantastic bank heist using 3 blind men.

It is mildly interesting, but an hour into it and only one musical number so far! So I think I will finish it tomorrow and head to bed with a book.

Actually about three hours ago, several of the rowdies were rather attractive.  Of course, three hours ago, they were also rather sober.

JOB:  Well, something is on the horizon but I have to wait until the beginning of the week to make sure it is set in stone.  Then I'll let you know for sure.

TV:  Well, I re-watched the 1st episode of In Plain Sight as I had only seen half of it when it first came out.  It was pretty okay.  Then I watched the 2nd one, it was MUCH better!  It seems like is gets better and I find I really enjoy Mary McCormack! :)
