Title: SLAVING OVER A HOT KEYBOARD
Post by: bk on June 29, 2008, 12:32:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hot and written on a keyboard, and how it is time for you to post until the hot cows come home.

Here is the story of the concert piece "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas."

Composer Eric Whitacre was largely untrained, but discovered that he had quite a compositional talent, and was accepted into Juilliard's program.  He was writing all kinds of wonderful choral pieces, but his professors said, "Enough of that!"  Give us something instrumental.  He didn't cotton to that kind of authority, so decided to "show them" by writing "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas," intending it to be a parody score for a fictitious BAD Japanese horror film.  So first he wrote a synopsis of this fictitious film, and then he "scored" it.

It has gone on to become one of his most successful compositions!   :)

I have re-listened to the OBC of The Catered Affair.  I really like it.

I think the producers could have selected a more appealing "clip" to highlight on the Tonys.  I also think that Ms. Prince's problem was that she couldn't hear the accompaniment properly.

Good morning, all! I have to finish today the gi-normous "Night and Day" (I always preferred Anna Russell's version Nacht und Tag) for Miss Kim Criswell so that I can turn over a copy of the full score tomorrow to her conductor before I begin copying the parts. My desdline is July 3, but thank God the conductor Mr Kevin Farrell, who conducted the Hayley Mills tour of Le Roi et Moi, lives only a block away.

That's my only news. For now.

For the record, DR MBarnum, I've never called you Lulu or Nancy, and I always defend you: when folk say to me you're not fit for pigs, I say, yes you are!

I'll be starting my new review set today: CANNON, Season 1, Volume 1. I only watched a few of the shows during its lengthy run, so I'm sure most of these will be brand new for me. It's a Quinn Martin Production, so that at least suggests a certain level of quality, badly missing in the WALKER TEXAS RANGER set I last reviewed.

While I cook and eat lunch today, I'll try MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST again. I had the DVR re-record it since the copy I got Thursday night had some kind of audio squelch that was unbearable. I thought about turning on Closed Captioning and just muting the sound, but I'd rather hear AND see the show, so I tried rerecording it, and we'll see how that turned out.

The "not fit for pigs" line reminds me of the emotional climax of the film VIVA MAX, which starred Peter Ustinov and was based on a novel by Jim Lehrer (of MacNeil-Lehrer fame).  Ustinov as a general is driven to action, recapturing the Alamo,  by a lady telling him "Your men wouldn't follow you into a whorehouse."  In a touching but funny moment, John Astin as his second-in-command assures Ustinov's character that his former lady friend was wrong, that his men WOULD follow him into a whorehouse.  (I assume it's based on the "not fit for pigs" train of thought.)

I am very disgusted with my neighbors today.  They have a cat that won't stay out of my yard. I think it's the culprit who has killed my baby rabbit and some of my birds.  I have no proof, but I think so.  I've told them to keep it out of my yard, but they just blow it off as being a cat.

Today I opened the windows for Callie and Boo and the cat was right there under the window.  They both freaked out and not being able to attack the intruder, attacked each other. I intervened and no one was hurt, but I am really ticked off.  I am planning to get a big spray bottle and will fill it with water and spray the cat every time it's in my yard.  It won't hurt the cat, but cat's hate water.  So, it's the only thing I can think to do.  I was afraid the cats were going to go trhough the screen this morning to get the cat.

Working on one of the Kevin/Sean arrangements - originally they were doing a three-song section - it had a point and everything, but getting from one song to the next was very awkwardly done by whoever did this chart, so I'm redoing the turnarounds into the new songs.

Time for a break! I just checked my files: this is my fifth round of "Night and Day." My first was a choral arrangement for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, the second the orchestration for Rebecca Luker's album, the third for Kevin Spirtas, the fourth for Ron Raines, and now Miss Criswell's. I don't believe there's any other song that I arranged more than twice.

Due to the influence of BK's viewing habits, I watched two episodes of Perry Mason, both from season 1. I just love all of the wonderful guest stars.

I have been a fan of this show since I was a teenager. I would actually skip school just to stay home and watch episodes that had my favorite B movie stars as guests (this was back when TV guide listed such things).

I really cannot stomach how they report news anymore - on TV, the Internet, anywhere.  The latest Internet headline glaring at me is TEEN KILLED BY ROLLERCOASTER - at Six Flags Georgia.  Now wouldn't your first assumption be that the rollercoaster malfunctioned and a tragic accident happened?  Certainly that was mine.  But, no, this teen scaled TWO not one, TWO six foot fences that were clearly marked that clearly said OFF LIMITS and DANGEROUS to VISITORS, then proceeded to enter a RESTRICTED AREA, at which point he was struck by the rollercoaster.  Not exactly the fault of anyone but the teen, but first they've got to get you to read the story, I guess.

I'm sluggish today...oh! yes! I am sluggish!

I was slug-a-bed until 10 a.m.

I intended to get my paper, brew a cup of coffee and settle in but I had a phone call from my maternal aunt who is all kinds of giddy because she's got her very first cell phone.  So she yakked with me a while and I took the opportunity to start up my computer.

After the call, I checked e-mails, and then visited a couple of sites.  Been tilting at windmills ever since.  It's fun.  It relieves stress.  And it allows me to face the coming week with renewed vigor.

Now I am hungry.  I am also wanting that cup of coffee.

Everyone have a great day!

On tv for me tonight:

Not much.

The Hills, S3, E23.

How Do I solve a problem like maria.

Password.

re: The Hills. I had never gotten MTV. So never came in contact with the show. But ever since CTV (here in canada) started showing it, i've grown attached. And i ended up watching seasons 1 and 2 online (mtv website).

I can't really figure out how much of it is real. Before i started watching i had read that it was scripted reality (whatever that is). But Heidi and spencer (from the show) were on The View this week. And they said it was real. And that they just tell the cameras their schedules and that is how they know where to show up.

To me it seems like even if that is true, that some of the characters do things to cause conflict on purpose!

I'm curious, i've never seen the original show that this came from Laguana beach. Is it similar? All i know is lauren conrad (from the hills) was on it also.

As they often do with widescreen movies shot in Super 35, HBO reformats even the HD presentations to 1.78:1 which I just hate. (I mention this since DR Ron Pulliam mentioned watching HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX on HBO-HD.) Of course, I watch the movies in HD there first that I'm curious about and then if I like them, I'll investigate DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD availability. The discs usually present the OAR of the films rather than reformatted versions.

Next, I put in CANNON, Season 1, Volume 1, disc 1. The set starts with the two hour pilot which must have run as a CBS Thursday night movie the season before CANNON joined the network as a regular series. Lots of guest stars in this episode too: Vera Miles, Earl Holliman, J.D. Cannon, Lynda Day, Ellen Corby, Laurence Pressman, Barry Sullivan, Keenan Wynn, John Fiedler.

Not the greatest mystery, kind of a muddle actually, but Cannon was such an interesting character, always making for of himself for being overweight. No wonder it was picked up as a series.

The condition of the print was poor with wildly fluctuating flesh tones (from purple to brown), soft, debris-filled. I hope the series episodes look a little better than this. HAWAII FIVE-O looked brand new compared to the condition of this pilot film.

We ushers have to be there an hour and a half before the show starts, which is also a half hour before the lobby opens.  There's a lot of pre-show stuff that happens...okay, not really a lot, but they need to make sure that ushers get there and find parking.  Also, if someone doesn't show up, they have time to call someone else.

Good Evening!

Well... The cast is as ready as they are going to be for tomorrow's presentation for the musical supervisor from the Really Useful Group (a.k.a. The Man from RUG).  More precisely, they as ready as the want to be for tomorrow's presentation.  We ran the whole show today, and a good chunk of them weren't trying their best - or just weren't trying at all in some sections.  Very frustrating.  However, after tomorrow morning, any and all changes will be determined by the Man from RUG.  -And we reminded the cast about that fact.  Time to STEP. IT. UP!!!

I just learned that the potato chip was invented in Saratoga Springs NY when a diner complained that his potatoes were cut too thick, so the cook got even by cutting them VERY thin.

The floral delivery never arrived, so there were no flowers for the funeral. Also, the soundman needed to leave, so his apprentice, Joey, ran the soundboard for the funeral service by himself for the first time. Joey is 8. He did a great job.

And that is the news from church.

So that's why the chips served with ribs at Montgomery Inn are called Saratoga Chips!  They are especially good dipped in some barbecue sauce, or the leftover ranch dressing (which I always order on the side, just for that purpose!)

Well, my sis and I went to see Avenue Q and it was amazing!  So entertaining and funny!  We loved it!  We both thought it was at 2:00 p.m. and was taking our time getting ready and at 12:00 p.m. when I was putting tickets in purse, noticed the tickets said it was at 1:00 p.m.!!  Oh, man, you never seen such a torpedo hit in all your born days!  I was showered but sis wasn't yet.  Clothes flying, make up applying, digging for shoes but we made it!  With 20 minutes to spare!  Whew!

It was definitely worth it!  Now it's overcast here and expecting thunderstorms, you'd think we were already in NY!

I'm waiting to see the swimming from Omaha. There was a lot of storm damage there over the past few days, even a couple people killed. The news showed them cleaning up outside the venure where the swimming will happen.  I'm curious to see what they say about it

Well, I'm back from dinner...

I ended up heading back over to the Moonlight Diner, where I (over)indulged with a Monte Cristo Sandwich with a side of "Disco Fries" (with mozzarella cheese and gravy).  I was thinking of ordering a sundae for dessert - 1/2-price on Sunday nights - but realized I was just a bit too full to enjoy dessert, so I asked for the check.  Well...

As I was about to pay the check, a group of my cast came into the place.  I ended up sitting with them for a while... And then after my meal had had some time to digest, I went ahead and ordered my 1/2 price ice cream sundae.  :)

*And I had a real good time hanging out with them too.  Despite some of their "issues", they are really a great group of people, and they've all become fast friends over the past two weeks.

IT. UP!!!

Jose, did you say that Cameron Mackintosh was coming in to watch a rehearsal this week, or did I dream that?

Jose - did the singer find out about the wrong-month booking mistake before she got to the airport?

Thankfully, she noticed the mistake on the itinerary that was e-mailed to her.  Of course, since the cruise line takes care of those arrangement directly, she then had to call the office here, and then the office had to call the cruise line to notify them of the mistake.  Of course, trying to take care of all those arrangements on a Saturday when the cruise line office is lightly staffed, well...

Alas, she's currently stranded in Houston due to a delayed connecting flight.  She left Los Angeles at 9:00 this morning, and probably won't be arriving in Ft. Lauderdale until sometime after midnight.  :-\

Back from an errand and a visit to the new location of the Kansas City Barbecue - had a brisket sandwich and, instead of fries, beans.  I think Ye Olde Stomach if finally shrinking because I could barely finish what normally I not only finish easily, but I normally finish a huge portion of fries, and I've been known to have a side of sausage, too.  Not today, Charlie.

Beans, huh?  You will probably get rid of a few more calories before the evening is done.

Jose, did you say that Cameron Mackintosh was coming in to watch a rehearsal this week, or did I dream that?

"Andrew" is coming from RUG - RUG being Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's company.  However, Andrew is not Lord Andrew.  This company also presents a cruise ship version of "Hey, Mr. Producer" - which is a tribute to the musicals that Sir Cameron Mackintosh has produced.  -Which also includes some music from some of Lord Lloyd Webber's musicals.

Capisce?

Sunday morning greetings!  Richard is off to church in Cincinnati and I'm about to partake of my second "guilty pleasure" movie of the weekend on Lifetime.  Yesterday I watched The Pilot's Wife, based on the novel by Anita Shreve, and in about 10 minutes I'm going to watch Open House, which I hope is based on the novel by Elizabeth Berg.  They both star my Univ. of Michigan classmate Christine Lahti.

I love Christine Lahti! She dated a songwriter friend of mine & they loved to NY together and worked menial jobs while waiting for their big break. They didn't end up together but he was always very happy with any success she had and they've stayed friends. She's apparently a very nice person! (So's he...)

I spent the day cleaning house after cutting the grass and gardening. This evening, my mom and her DP came over and I took them out to dinner to celebrate her birthday (which is actually tomorrow.) A well-known Atlanta chef has a very nice restaurant at the top of our street. She had been to his old restaurant about 30 years ago, so she enjoyed having some gourmet fare. The chef knows me, so he came over and met my mom and brought us a special little appetizer he prepared.

We told them we hadn't planned on dessert, because I already had a cake and coffee waiting at home, but they brought out little treats anyway, on a plate wiht a birthday greeting drizzled in chocolate over bite-sized chocolate ganache and a tiny creme brulee and fresh berries. Yum!

Then we loaded her present into the car (big tomato ladders) and now she's on her way home.

DH Greg arrived home from Dukefest, tired and sunburned. One of the interviews he did was conducted on the race track at 100 miles an hour, with one of the stunt crew!

Tom Wopat was there today to sign autographs, and they jumped a General Lee car 197 feet! They wrecked several which were then auctioned off. And John Schnieder auctioned off his own personal motorcycle. Duke fans from around the world were there. Who knew it had wordwide popularity?

Very warm here - weather wise.

I sort of liked SEA WIFE starring Ms Joan Collins and Mr Richard Burton, although the music was not very good and the process/model photography looked pretty silly.....I can only imagine what it looked like on the B I G screen.

Still don't like RALLY ROUND THE FLAG BOYS although the supporting cast is lots of fun....Gale Gordon, Dwayne Hickman, Tuesday Weld.  Seems to me that Joan Collins is better at comedy than Miss Joanne Woodward is, Mr Paul Newman is very funny.  But the script isn't a patch on the book.  And my favorite Max Shulman book ANYBODY GOT A MATCH - has never been filmed at all!

feel better vibes to Cilla... I have been under the weather the last couple of days but I am feeling better.

Healing vibes to Ginny and Laura!

I have had a lovely collection of amused annoyances today... Some people on some boards just are complete idiots... It amazes me sometimes how they say one thing on one board and then to another and say the opposite and when confronted with the contradictory evidence they lie to your face and they say are good people.

They never seem to learn the lessons of their own stupidity

Yep.... I find them amusing....
