Well, you've read the notes, the notes reached the depths, and now it is time for you to post until the deep cows come home - they're currently trying to take a flying leap.
-
And the word of the day is: COSTIVE!
-
I'm the only one in the jernt, so I guess I get the pleasure of doing the first few names - that's why one should never WUSSBURGER on Sunday night.
-
And so:
George Stevens - great director
-
George Sherman - Good director
-
George Bernard Shaw - great writer.
-
George C. Scott - great actor.
-
Gregory Sierra - actor.
-
Gwen Stefani - singer.
-
Gus Schirmer - B'way director/producer
-
G. (Gustave) Schirmer - music publisher
-
Greg Stillson - presidential candidate in Stephen King's The Dead Zone.
-
Gary Sandy - actor.
-
Gary Sherman - director, Poltergeist III
-
Garry Sherman - musical director - B'way's Purlie.
-
Grace Slick - singer.
-
Gary Shandling - comedian
-
I think I've done enough and shall leave the rest to you excellent people.
-
Although since no one will do it, I may as well add Garner Simmons, who's an expert on Sam Peckinpah, and has written books about him.
-
Oh, and just because she'd yell on me if I didn't: Georgia Still - composer/lyricist and wife of Jason Robert Brown.
-
There are so many others I could go on for two more pages all by myself - which would teach the WUSSBURGERS a thing or three, but I'll stop right now with one of my favorite actors ever: George Sanders.
-
Gene Simmons, the tongue-wagging bassist from KISS
-
Gary Sinise, actor
-
Garrison Starr, singer
-
Gregor Samsa, the character who turns into a cockroach in Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."
(Side note: I once had to do an essay on this Kafka short story in college. As I was preparing the title page, I spied a real cockroach zipping across the floor. I corralled said cockroach, slapped him on the copy machine along with my title page, and printed out a new page complete with bug. I got a "Nice bug!" comment from the professor and an A on the paper. Oh, and no cockroaches were harmed in the making of this essay; the cockroach in question scurried off after just one copy.)
-
Gene Simmons - (not from Kiss: "Haunted House" 1964)
-
Gerald Sternbach, often described by Jason Graae as "the best musical director … available."
On Jason's BK-produced "Live at the Cinegrill" CD, Gerald served as MD and contributed the sad and beautiful song "Something That I Wanted You to Know."
-
George Stephanopoulos, commentator
-
Georgie Shaw (50's pop singer)
-
Already we're doing great - and I'll just add another all-time fave: George Shearing.
-
Gayle Shepherd (of the Shepherd Sisters)
-
Happy to say that all the book components are finally at the publishers, so I'm hoping things can move apace now and that we'll be ready to take preorders in about four weeks.
-
Glenn Shorrock (Little River Band)
-
George Strait, country singer
-
Georgia Stitt, musical theatre composer/director
-
George Strait - Country Singer
-
Gary Stites. (pop singer circa 1960)
-
Gale Storm
-
Gloria Swanson
-
Spyro Gyra.
No backwards.
-
GEoffrey Scott, was on Dynasty
-
and for a "Brassed Off" reference:
Gloria Stitts.
(an unseemly reference to the character played by Tara Fitzgerald)
-
Gale Sondergaard, she was an actress on Ryan's Hope...
-
Gayle Storm
Good one - presuming you mean the beloved sitcom star - if so, it's Gale.
-
I knew this was going to be a good one.
-
Gale Sondergaard, she was an actress on Ryan's Hope...
And the first actress to win the best supporting actress oscar long before Ryan's Hope.
And the first actress cast to play the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz
-
I must to bed.
-
Welcome eleven GUESTS.
-
Georgia Satellites
-
Gloria Stivic, Sally Struthers' married name on "All in the Family"
-
But, before I go: George Stiles - Brit theater composer.
-
Good one - presuming you mean the beloved sitcom star - if so, it's Gale.
Fixed it.. I blame it on the Dark Moon.
-
There has to be someone with
George Smith
Gary Smith
Ginger Smith
Gabe Smith
-
Gary Shearston. (OZ singer who had a top 10 hit in the Uk with "I Get A Kick out of you")
-
Gloria Smith
Glen Smith
Geoffrey Smith
-
Guy Smiley, "Sesame Street" character
-
Gavin Sutherland (of the Sutherland Brothers - Scottish duo who penned and first sang "Sailing" - better known for Rod Stewart's version).
-
Dinner time in Oz.
Enjoy your Monday everyone.
-
Au revoir, DR Tomovoz!

Yesterday was a day of heat. :P My house is hot (I have no air conditioning) and I ushered for "Whose Live Anyway?" The theater was hot, even though they had the air conditioners on. When you're in a theater that seats 988 and the audience is more than 700, it's gonna be hot!
-
But it was fun! And they were funny! And very good!
-
And now, I'm off to bed...a very warm bed...in an uncomfortably warm bedroom with no openable window. It's a loft at the top of a three story townhouse. It was 88 degrees at one point, this morning.
Pity me.
;)
-
And so I say, "Good night," to all.
-
Gale Sondergaard, she was an actress on Ryan's Hope...
She was also the first person to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar (for ANTHONY ADVERSE).
-
She was also the first person to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar (for ANTHONY ADVERSE).
Oops! I guess somebody beat me to that one. Sorry about that.
However, she was also blacklisted for years because her husband was one of the "Hollywood Ten".
She was a very nice and interesting lady. I had the priviledge of interviewing her years ago when I was writing a column for the now long gone CORONET Magazine.

LA TIMES (http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-yoshino30-2008jun30,0,3649513.story)
Can California's same-sex marriages be saved?
A constitutional ban would also likely doom the unions already on the books.
We have all heard of May-December marriages, but in California these days, it's the status of a June-November marriage that is at issue.
Since June 16, same-sex couples have been marrying at a rapid clip, pursuant to last month's landmark ruling by the state Supreme Court. In November, however, Californians will vote on a proposed state constitutional amendment that would define marriage as being strictly between a man and a woman. If it passes, there obviously would be no more same-sex marriages in the future. But what would happen to the marriages that gays and lesbians already entered into between June and November?
This would be a novel issue, so no one knows for sure. But I believe the amendment would void the marriages. For the same-sex marriages to survive, freedom-to-marry advocates would have to win at least one of two arguments in the courts. Both arguments would rest on the unfairness of applying the reinstated ban retroactively, but both would probably fail.
…
The language leaves room for other states to recognize the June-November marriages as valid, but it leaves no discernible discretion for any governmental body in California to continue extending marriage rights to the June-November crowd.
So, Singdaw has the trick - go to CA to get married, returned to NY (where you can't get married) and have the marriage recognized.
der Brucer
Another interesting wrinkle:
CA has no residency requirements for marriage, but it does for divorce; so, out-of-state couples who fly in for their "I dos" and return home to a state that does not recognize same-sex marriages, may have a difficult time in the future untying the knot.

return to NY (where you can't get married) and have the marriage recognized.
One slight snag: an Arizona-based right wing group is already suing to prevent NY from recognizing the CA marriages.
We realize that what we're doing may not stand, legally. But we're doing it, to paraphrase DR TCB, Because We Can. For now. :)

I can see why der B disallowed these. Sorry, Michael, but your phrase "There has to be someone with..." suggests that you are just tossing out names, without being sure of who you are referring to. Sure, if I were to Google (and I did) I could come up with lots of George Smiths, but the rules of the game are to name specific people from memory. If you had said why we should know George/Gary/Ginger et al, then they could be added to the list. As it stands, they're not added yet.
Oh, and a reminder: preferred form is for one entry per post. We get better daily numbers that way! :D

Has anyone said George Saimes, American Football player?

And it is "Georgia StiTT" who is married to JRB, not "Georgia StiLL".
Thank-you for the correction.

What about Gus Van Sant? Or would that be considered starting with a "V" for the last name? Thought I'd try! :)
-
Gus Savage, U.S. Politician
-
George C. Scott - Okay, I'm done for now! I'm off to an interview this morning. I know I may have a job in waiting but it's not positive yet so it doesn't hurt to follow through with this one. Laterz!
-
Greta van Susteren
Yes. A reminder: Van and Von are prefixes, not part of the actual last name. We call the guy Beethovan, not Von Beethovan, after all. And Ludwig von Drake's last name is Drake.
;D
-
DR Matt H - do they still make LaserDisc Players? Would you be able to replace yours if it went on the fritz?
No, but I have bought two functioning used ones on Ebay for backup since I still have a fairly substantial laserdisc collection. I should be set for my lifetime.
-
Georgie Stoll, Oscar winning MGM music director.
-
Great Big Sea... group from Canada
Uh....
The initials for Georgia Satellite are G. S. Great Big Sea is G. B. S. What if the band's name was Great Big Wet Sea? Or Great Big Wet Sloppy Sea? It's a slippery slope here, with groups having "middle initials". Let's keep the names of groups/bands to those having the specific initials of the day's game, and no others.
Sorry. But an interesting try.
-
George C. Scott - Okay, I'm done for now! I'm off to an interview this morning. I know I may have a job in waiting but it's not positive yet so it doesn't hurt to follow through with this one. Laterz!

I'll be working on trying to complete the CANNON box set today. For fans of these shows, it's irritating when a season is divided up into volumes, but for reviewers, it's heaven having only half the number of episodes to view in order to complete a set.

I was not overwhelmed by any of the solo, "white room" designs that the seven finalists threw together, but I was not prepared for the judges' assessments of one of them, which was head and shoulders BETTER than two others.
Poor Michael, the designer the judges ejected in this competiton, had what they called "the advantage" of picking his own country to be inspired by. Two of the others had Mexico, two had Thailand and two had Italy. Michael chose Spain. What impressed him about Spain, apparently, was the modern clubs he had been in with glossy floors and ultra-modern furnishings. His room came together quickly and it looked fairly good, if not inspired. Contrasted with a couple of others -- chiefly, Tracee's hideous cartoon of a room and Matt's atrocious Tibetan temple (one would never know unless he told you) -- Michael's was nicely done. Michael went first and the judges crucified him. Vern Yip declared, "I look more Spanish than that room does." So, what we were hearing here is that the judges expected to see "old" Spanish influences rather than something that one might see in clubs today. That's a rather literal interpretation I think, but it's their show. Another favorite of mine, Mikey V., did what he called a Thai zen garden. It looked like a Japanese restaurant to me, but the judges praised him. The other rooms were okay, but nobody blew the judges or the audience away.
The bottom three were Michael, Tracee and Matt. For two weeks, Tracee has been the weakest link in the competition, working with a partner, and this week she showed no solo talent at all, IMO, in doing an Italianate room, choosing a painted chandelier and a technique that might fit better in the theater of the absurd to construct a gondola bed.
Michael was told that he had the upper hand this week and that he blew it. Vern Yip told him that this week he didn't have anybody else to hide behind and his weaknesses showed through. Michael was devastated. "I" was devastated. Michael had been the strongest link in the past two teams he was part of, and made the toughest and best decisions that yielded high scores from the judges. What they haven't shown us must have something to do with Vern's venal condemnation. Tracee, on the other hand, is a wreck-in-progress. Her M.O. is to tear down everyone else's ideas and then to introduce crap. She has been at the bottom every week. When the judges criticize her work she dissolves into tears. When her fellow competitors tell her they don't like her manner of work, she tells them she's ashamed to be associated with them, then dissolves into tears. And still she walks through the green room door much to all the other contestants' dismay. The judges seem to be evaluating her on something "other than" what she's actually doing. It's not much fun, at this point, to see her continue to survive while better designers -- last week's D. Paul and this week's Michael -- are sent home. I'm giving the show one more week. If I think a fix is definitley on, I'll stop watching it.

Well the set is built. I haven't seen it yet, but I am leaving in a bit to do the lighting. I will take my camera so pictures may be taken!
The Youth Theatre Workshop is OVAH, so we don't have to deal with all of those brats anymore. The best thing about this week.
Of course THREE people are out tonight....but that's another story. Hopefully everyone will be off book, but that would be a bonus - or a miracle....or both.

But are you unanimous in that?

Monday morning greetings - just got that in under the wire! Slept in this morning and went for today's blood test. It only took half as many tries as last Friday. I've also graduated from using a walker to using a cane.

Wasn't he also involved in Judy Garland's television series?

Between DRs JMK, JRand57, and JoseSPiano, we have a clump of recalcitrant performers.

On tv tonight for me:
The Mole.
Canadian Idol.
The results show of How do I solve a Problem like Maria.
I am not enjoying the Sound of Music reality show. I hate the format. ALW's guy simon chooses these awful non-musical theatre songs for the girls. And that is all we see.
I loved the Maria school part. Because it was all about acting and musical theatre songs. I really hope at some point we get a)songs from the show b) musical theatre songs c) to see some acting and d) we get to see the girls opposite their leading man.
The only good part of the show is that john barrowman is there all the time (he is one of the judges).
-
Oh i emailed the comedy network and My Life on the D List will premiere here on august 15th. Better late than never!

Gregory Salada (sp?) Kate's BF on Kate & Allie or was he Allie's BF?

I always correct it when it happens to me, but this time will be an exception!!!

Great G.S.'s I must say - can't believe I didn't get some of these, like George Segal.

And I suspect there are a ton more.

Still drinking yucky water. I may have corn on the cob for lunch - I bought some fine looking ears of white corn a couple of days ago. Know what I love about white corn? 75 calories per ear.

Well, no one can say we didn't get to page ten.

Will we never get to page eleven?

I have recorded the arrangement segues and sent them off. I have recorded the final song of the musical I'm mentoring and have sent that off. I have finished the music fixes and sent those off. Shortly I must ship a few packages and I do believe that the rest of the day will then be mine all mine.

Are the Depths of Hades anything like the Depths of Depravity?
They might be like "... the depths of deg-ra-Day--
I say, first, medicinal wine from a teaspoon,
Then beer from a bottle.
An' the next thing ya know,
Your son is playin' for money
In a pinch-back suit.
And list'nin to some big out-a-town Jasper
Hearin' him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no!
But a race where they set down right on the horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey'boy
Sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil?
Well, I should say."

Remember last year's July 2, 2007, break in at the PHI office? A drop of blood has provided a DNA match to a suspect, and i just got a call from the DA's office about appearing beofre the grand jury in late July. Now, if I could only remember what was going on last year when I discovered the breakin.
-
Wow, DR Elmore, it sounds like an episode of Law & Order! I'll bet the HHW archives might help you fill in some blanks about what else was going on at the time.
-
Try going back a year in these posts, Larry. We all kind of use this as an open diary. It might jog your memory.

Speaking of archives, I stumbled across the semi-lovely Rexella Van Impe yesterday whilst channel surfing. She and Jack were decrying the neo-Satanic tendencies of Oprah (not that I'd argue with that, LOL). Does anyone remember what I posted probably a year or so ago about Rexella? I remember she was reading copy about one of their products and included a stage direction, like "display product", in her read, but I just can't recall what exactly she said right now.

Vibes to poor Kerry and all other DR's with foot-related issues!
-
Gillian Statham, stunt person.
-
And the musician Gregg Smith - founder of the NYC-based Gregg Smith Singers! :)
[thanks, DR Jeanne!]
You're welcome, Sing. I wonder if they're one and the same. The Gregg Smith I knew sang, too.
-
Gaki Schluppenheimer, aka of actor Evan Lee Dahl

Had a nice lunch, and a much mroe relaxed one than the rather fun but frenzied lunch from last Thursday. Some good laughs were had by the two of us.
-
I watched 2 1/2 episodes of CANNON this afternoon. Lots of familiar guest stars on these, and I was highly amused that Vic Tayback played an itty bitty part at the start of the show getting killed within the first couple of minutes. Max Gail, who had a rather sizable role opposite Mitchell Ryan, got no guest star billing but was rather far down the cast list.
-
In another one, Kim Hunter was the primary guest star along with Frank Aletter and Andrew Prine.
-
Glendon Swarthout - author of The Shootist, Bless The Beasts And Children, Where The Boys Are and others.
-
Time for a list update.
-
In the episode I only got halfway through, the actor I knew instantly was Barnard Hughes (and I thouoght instantly of his friendship with DR Elmore.) I'll finish this one when I go back down.
Then, I'll only have three more episodes remaining.
The only bonus features in the set are episode promos attached to each show.
-
Back from errands and I'm making corn on the cob.
-
George Stark, the protagonist of Stephen King's The Dark Half.
-
George Sidney, famous MGM director.
-
Rehearsal with Sean has been changed to Wednesday evening.
-
I then skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke and nothing about him in the previews either.
-
Mezzo-soprano Gladys Swarthout
I actually went back through my PHI emails and found my July 2, 2007, report to the California office. I will check as well what I posted here in the archives. Thanks, DRs Ginny and S Woody, for the advice.

I hope they end this psycho bitch Sophie storyline soon. I'd drag her ass into a DNA lab for proof the kid wasn't mine if I were the moronic man she's conning. Some of the characters on soaps are too dumb to be real.

Possible SPOILER re: "Design Star"

I think they are keeping Tracee for the Drama. Michael really hasn't done much that was very good. He also engaged in a lot of peronal attacks. My guess is she will be one of the next to go. They did say that you should be able to look at the room and see your country. His could have been a club anywhere.

Didn't DR Kerry just break a foot or something like that recently? Vibes are being sent to you Kerry!!!

Did anyone watch the new game show WIPEOUT last week? It was pretty darn amusing...it is a copy of the Japanese game show TAKESHI'S CASTLE, which played in America in a re-dubbed version titled MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE.
There is also a reality competition program that began last week titled I SURVIVED A JAPANESE GAME SHOW. I will be keeping up with that one as well, as I love seeing all the wonderful shots of Tokyo, and it is fun to see the assorted stunts and games that the players must go through.
Just some enjoyable, simple minded summer viewing.

Remember last year's July 2, 2007, break in at the PHI office? A drop of blood has provided a DNA match to a suspect, and i just got a call from the DA's office about appearing beofre the grand jury in late July. Now, if I could only remember what was going on last year when I discovered the breakin.
Oh, they'll remind you ;)

A review of the archives clarified that Rexella's classic comment was "point to it."

Well, I slept from about 9:30 or so until 2:30 pm. I was out like a light, I'm telling you....out like a light on a moonless night. I just ate some bolied chicken and mashed potatoes. First I've eaten in close to 24 hours. We shall see how my body reacts.

My brain must just not be working today. I simply cannot think of any G.S. people. And when I see posts of G.S. people I can't believe that I didn't think of him/her!

I got a couple more box sets in the mail today from Paramount: RENO 911!'s latest season and some Comedy Central box on parodies of classic kid's TV shows. Thankfully, they don't come out until midway to later in the month of July so there is plenty of time to get to them.
-
Now I'm going to head down to get back to Frank Cannon's last 3 1/2 cases in this set.
Hmmm. Might have time for something else tonight to watch other than the BONES rerun, too!
WBBL.

Oh, another GS
Gordon E. Sawyer. There's an honorary Academy Award named for him, so he had something to do with movies, but I didn't bother to look up who exactly he was in the industry.

Aren't there quite a few errand and truant people today?

Grant Sturiale - composer of KIKI BABY and other shows

Hey, c'mon here, like I'm supposed to do NOTHING BUT UPDATE THE LIST ON MY ONLY DAY OFF THIS WEEK WHEN IT'S THE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND COMING UP AND I'M GOING TO BE STRESSING OUT IF I DON'T GET SOME GOOD REST AND RELAXATION GOING???
Sheesh.
The names added to the list that you commented about were added AFTER I was working on the update. They will be on the next list.
Tomorrow I don't get off work until 9:30 pm, and then I'm back at work at 7:30 in the morning, in between which I've got to make sure der Brucer gets fed and that I get enough sleep for the next day, along with getting myself up and showered and fully awake in time to be at the job for another training session with the area Billing Manager.
Friday, the Fourth, I finish my shift at 10:00 pm, and then I'm back at the store at 7:30 again. Yep, I get to deal with the Fourth of July Drunks. I am SO looking forward to that. And once again I'll have a hungry mouth to feed when I get home, not just mine.
(Paragraph deleted. Let's just say it wasn't nice.)
I am so not looking forward to this week. :P

DR Kerry will have surgery tomorrow. Yes, MBarnum, last fall he broke the other ankle.
MEGA MEGA VIBES TO DR KERRY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
So... Only one girl cried today. And she actually cried before the run-thru - ???
Otherwise, it was a very good day. The cast really stepped it up, and The Man from Rug only had a couple of very basic comments for the group, and then just wanted to go through all the soloist's songs at the piano. It went so well today that we ended the day an hour early! :)
He worked a few of the ensemble numbers, and even simplified (thankfully!) some of the harmonies in the opening number.
We'll do some more detail work tomorrow morning, then another run-thru tomorrow afternoon. Then one more run-thru Wednesday morning before The Man from RUG returns to London. -And then the cast will basically put the show away until they board the ship this coming weekend.
*I did breath a big sigh of relief after the run-thru this morning. First of all, it was finally great to see the cast pull together. Secondly, it was nice to see that my work with them actually worked. And, finally, it was nice to get a literal and figurative pat on the back from The Man from RUG as well as the staff from the production company.
Whew!

Congrats on a job well done DR Jose

Thanks DR Laura. Not at 100% but doing better. I'm thinking about going to the office to see if there is anything I'm forgetting that I have to do tomorrow. The next 2 days will be very busy but then I'm off to the lake.

Thank you!
I was really prepared for the worst. Well, even the stage director was sort of surprised how well it went today too. Now it's up to the cast to keep growing, and to keep their energy levels up, and to keep SMILING when they sing. -A few of them still have a bit of a look of fear and questioning in their eyes when they open their mouths. I keep thinking they're constipated. ;)

Well, bk has the corn.
-
bk - Yes, keep drinking water. At least six to eight glasses a day. *In fact, regardless of which diet or "lifestyle change" you follow, all of them highly suggest drinking water regularly. You need something to flush all the bad stuff out of your body. **And lack of hydration actually makes your body hold onto calories, so...

OK - I need dinner.

OK - I need dinner.
Washed down with a glass of water?
-
Time for der B and me to get shopping. I still don't have any idea what's dinner going to be. :P

Beans and taters is always filling.

Beanie-weenies might make der Brucer laugh out loud.

And kind of beans might keep the dogs out of your room tonight.
-
Beans, glorious beans!
-
Oh, and the two ears of corn were tasty but not exceptional. And I didn't put too much butter on them, so that's good. I'm trying to figure out what I want to eat tonight - choices are Taco Bell (their tacos are under 180 calories each), a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich from Quickie's, a steak from Gelson's, or something else (but not Subway). Or I could buy a couple of chicken breasts and sautee them with mushrooms and onions, but that doesn't sound that appealing to me.

DR MBarnum, i watches the reality show I SURVIVED A JAPANESE GAMESHOW.
I don't really think it is my cup of tea. But it was sort of different.

I was seriously thinking about the chicken breasts, but at the last minute I passed the what is it fish counter and got some shrimp cocktail shrimp and a few crab claws - literally almost no calories in the fish itself, and the sauce I make has almost none as well - so I don't think I can do better than that.

I'm back from dinner. And a nice walk.
Well, actually, I went for a walk first, then had dinner.
I did a bit more exploring of the area around the hotel - which is basically comprised of lots of different office parks of varying sizes. Consequently, most of the places I passed during my walk were either closed or sparsely populated... or empty. However, I did come across the 24-hour Walgreen's, as well as a 7-11. And a very sketchy Dollar General store.
But I did come across another Chinese take out place that actually provided me with a very satisfying dinner. -And their Hot & Sour Soup was surprisingly fresh-tasting too.

Oh boy. I think I mentioned that I'd been called by the Times because they'd gotten a disgruntled e-mail from someone about the LA Festival calling certain shows "new musicals" when a few of them have been around for fifteen years. I spent a long time on the phone with this woman, saying nothing but lovely things about the Festival, but ranting with my usual rant about the way musicals are done these days - with the endless readings, and workshops, and more readings, and more workshops, and productions and more readings (see elmore's post about Busker Alley - can you call THAT a new musical?) - my point being that there really aren't any new musicals in the sense that there used to be. I said you can't really call The Times a new musical when it's fifteen years old and then said "Truth in advertising." But the latter comment was in regards to the person who'd written the complaining e-mail and I basically meant that that was HER point, not mine. However, the article, which appears in tomorrow's paper, quotes one line from me, and it's right at the top of the article, and it makes it "seem" like I'm somehow criticizing the Festival - and I'm FURIOUS about it. The Festival people have already written me and are really angry with me, even though I've explained every step of the way what I said to this woman. As soon as she called me, I called the head of the Festival to alert her, and I told the reporter to call the head of the Festival. Everyone else comes off okay, but it's the placement of my quote and the fact that it's completely out of context from what I was talking about. I've already written a letter to the editor of the Times, but I'm afraid the damage has been done re me doing anything further with the Festival. I think the e-mail the head of the Festival sent me was disgusting - she should know better, because if I wanted to be critical of the Festival believe me I would not be shy. I have a hugely popular blog here.

Festival of New American Musicals
(http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2008-06/40564287.jpg)
Jim Moody, xx
NEW OR NOT?: “The Brain From Planet X” had two stagings before the Festival of New American Musicals, including this one, produced at Los Angeles City College.
With the inclusion of some already staged productions, some quibble with organizers' definition of 'new.'
By Diane Haithman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
July 1, 2008
As Southern California's inaugural Festival of New American Musicals winds to a close, some observers and participants are raising this question: How, exactly, does this festival define the word "new"?
The wide-ranging event -- which began May 1 and closes with the July 10-13 staged reading of the musical "Dance With Me," based on the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz -- has included 148 events in 36 theaters from Santa Barbara to San Diego, reaching, according to the festival's leadership, an estimated 122,000 theatergoers.
But the fest -- organized by Marcia Seligson, founder and former producer and artistic director of the Reprise! musicals series, and marketing executive Bob Klein -- has included not only approximately a dozen world premiere productions and first readings or staged readings of musicals, but also about the same number of musicals that have had previous productions elsewhere.
West Coast premieres
Among the latter group are several shows that can claim to be West Coast premieres -- but one of those musicals, "The Times," by Brad Ross and Joe Keenan, had received a full production at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, Conn., in 1993, pushing the boundaries of what one might describe as "new." And one festival offering -- "Brain From Planet X," presented at the Chance Theater -- was produced locally at Los Angeles City College in 2006 and in the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2007.
Bruce Kimmel, who wrote "Brain From Planet X" with David Wechter, praised the festival's intent but, referring to "The Times," said: "You can't call a 15-year-old show a new musical, even though you can call it an L.A. premiere. It's just truth in advertising: New is new."
"The Times" also sparked a rather heated mid-June discussion on the theater website Talkin’ Broadway’s All That Chat, where a writer using the handle westcoastdrama wrote: "I love a great new musical. I even love revivals of great musicals. But I abhor when producers lie."
Such questions about the vintage of the festival's musicals does not faze Seligson, who said that choices were made on a case-by-case basis.
"We always said, from the beginning, what our definition of a musical that would fit for the festival, or was appropriate, was one that hadn't been done in Los Angeles before -- and that, for the most part, almost entirely was true," she said.
"That was not true of Bruce's show because he did it at L.A. City College, so that was an exception," Seligson continued. "There were a couple of exceptions -- and they were things that really deserved to be seen after the author had a time period to work on them. Until shows hit Broadway or the West End, they are works in progress. We weren't going to do 'Cats' at a festival of new American musicals, but I guess we were being sort of looser, and still are, about the word 'new' than some of these people who I guess we are talking about, who think this should have been the first time it's ever been seen outside of the composer's living room."
Works in progress
Seligson added that, despite the time that has passed since the 1993 production, "The Times" fit the parameters of this festival because "it's such a good show, and has so much potential and still needs work. And it has never been done here before."
If people object to her parameters, she added, "then you know what? I think they should do their own festival."
Gordon Hunt, who directed "The Times," said, "I don't have a problem at all" with the festival's loose definition of "new." "It's a difficult racket, the making of a musical, the developing of a musical, and anything done to encourage that and to celebrate that is really a good thing," he said.
Some reviewers have pointed out that one show, "My Antonia" at Ventura's Rubicon Theatre, is not really a musical. Adapted by Scott Schwartz from the 1918 novel by Willa Cather, the drama contains incidental music by Schwartz's father, the Tony Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz. Seligson acknowledged that festival organizers are describing the production -- which was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto in 2004 -- as "a new drama with music."
That's also OK with Seligson, who says that next year's festival will still be called "The Festival of New Musicals" and will espouse the same broad interpretation of the word "new." "If someone with a lot of time on their hands wants to carp about 'My Antonia' not being a musical, then that's fine with me," Seligson said.
der Brucer
Note: Inasmuch as Brain is arguably the most blatant violator of "new musical", Bruce's comments do seem odd - but he clearly has no problem with the Festival.
-
When I had my little "incident" last year, I was amazed at how much inaccuracy was in the newspaper story. So I no longer consider the newspapers to be very accurate.
-
...because if I wanted to be critical of the Festival believe me I would not be shy. I have a hugely popular blog here.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]TUMMY VIBES FOR DR CILLALIZ[/move]
Thanks Vixmom. I have this habit of thinking that if I don't feel well that I can rest one day and be well because, frankly, I don't get sick very often. I think I was really sick this time and although I'm recovering I'm not there yet. Tonight I tried to hurry and get everything written as I had planned to do over the weekend, but I just can't think and I'm still a little weak.
So, tomorrow I'm just going to have to ask for an extension. The trial is still 22 days away. I would think the judge can give me a couple more days to get this done.
-
I've sent responses to everyone and a letter to the editor - the people from the Festival haven't acknowledged my responses nor the fact that I immediately did as they asked and wrote the letter to the editor. Games? Must we?
-
The head of the Festival had also recently asked me for a quote about how wonderful it was to be in the Festival and I gave her a great one. Guess that doesn't count, but this one-line tempest in a teapot does. The whole thing makes me want to vomit on the ground.
-
Feel better soon, Cillaliz!

What's interesting is that someone at the L.A. Times even found this worthy of an article. I would think in this long-development environment we're in, the definition of "New" Musical as one that hasn't come into its own in a major way would be acceptable. For example: Didn't DROWSY CHAPERONE take six years from its first production (in Canada) to get to Broadway - and no one would argue that it wasn't still a new musical when it opened on Bway six years later, would they?
Even as prestigious and influential an organizational as the O'Neill Theatre Center in Waterford, CT is doing two brand new musicals as well as two other musicals that have already been seen and reviewed in full New York professional productions, but have not taken that big step. http://www.oneilltheatercenter.org/musicals.asp
I think the theatre community has come to accept that the definition of "new musical" is one that is still in development, awaiting its big professional break.
(I also can't fathom that any reporter would think a prior college production would keep a musical from qualifying as "new," no matter where it was reviewed.)
-
What besides Murder At Hollywood High?

The new one - Murder At The Grove.

Got a thank you e-mail from one of the heads of the Festival, thanking me for sending the letter to the editor. Not from the one who sent me the strong e-mail, though - she still hasn't responded. I wish I hadn't dashed off the letter to the editor quite so quickly, but I wanted to appease these people fast. I could have been clearer, I think, but it says what it needs to say.
-
what did you say in your letter, BK? Is the letter online?
-
I'll tell you why this Times woman went on the fishing expedition: Because that person "westcoastdrama" e-mailed her and stirred the pot and made it seem like there was a big sham going on. However, if this was the best she could come up with, it really was a tempest in a teapot. I reread it, and even my out of context one-liner isn't critical - just factual. While I wish it had been given its proper context, it's not a horrible thing.

I have no idea if they'll print it or not. It went something like this:
I was a little disturbed at the article in which I'm quoted (The LA Festival Of New Musicals - July 1, 2008 - Diane Haithman). I spent a lot of time on the phone with Miss Haithman, who was very nice. But the way this quote is taken out of context makes it seem like I'm slamming the festival and even "The Times," and I want to say in no uncertain terms that that was not my intention, ever. First of all, "The Times" is written by my friend Brad Ross, and I even recorded a song from it on a CD I produced. Furthermore, the quote excerpted was in the middle of a long diatribe about how musical theater has changed, with endless readings and workshops and how there really aren't any "new" musicals by the time they're put on stage in front of an audience. Shows now spend years and years in development, but not behind closed doors, but with readings, workshops, and productions in front of people.
My experience with the LA Festival of New Musicals was wonderful, and as I said many times in my interview, I think it's one of the best things to happen to LA, arts-wise, in ages, and I hope it's around for years to come. All I meant by what I was quoted as saying was that it's funny to call a fifteen-year-old musical new and maybe there's a better phrase or something. But, again, the way in which the quote is used makes it seem like I'm criticizing the Festival and I'm here to tell you I wasn't.

FJL, what did you think of the letter?
-
Does he have cover art, etc to post?
der Brucer
He should, since I had it up here on this site.
-
I think the theatre community has come to accept that the definition of "new musical" is one that is still in development, awaiting its big professional break.
Maybe replacing "New" with "Contemporary" would move us closer to a resolution.
der Brucer
Fred: would you still classify BOUNCE as a New Musical?

Fred: would you still classify BOUNCE as a New Musical?
Maybe the Festival can qualify their definition of "new" as specifically not having had a Broadway production.
