Plans vary on enforcement of California's hands-free cellphone law for drivers

The San Diego and Oceanside police departments are granting a 30-day grace period before issuing tickets. The CHP plans to be aggressive, stepping up staffing for the Fourth of July weekend.By Hector Becerra and David Pierson, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
July 1, 2008

With the law requiring drivers to use hands-free devices when making cellphone calls taking effect today, the odds of scofflaws being cited depend on where they are driving.

Although police agencies around Southern California said they would be enforcing the law, some agencies will be more aggressive than others, with the California Highway Patrol vowing the most rigorous enforcement.
...
As with all these driving rules, changing behavior takes time -- and is influenced not just by police crackdowns but by peer pressure, not to mention the fear of tickets.

How much do drivers have to fear? It depends.

Lt. Ruben De La Torre said the Los Angeles Police Department would go through an "educational" period, during which those cited would mostly be drivers who not only had mobile phones pressed to their ear but also were not driving safely.

"It's on a case-by-case basis," he said. "But people have to be aware that it's a clear and obvious violation."

Police departments in San Diego and Oceanside are going a step further, granting an official 30-day grace period before issuing tickets, even though the law itself doesn't include a grace period. "We're trying to ease people into this," said Gary Hassen, a detective with the San Diego Police Department.

But the CHP said drivers had been given enough time and promised a crackdown.

Los Angeles judge drops Hollywood drug case after video contradicts police testimony

In echoes of Rampart scandal, defense attorney says officers planted cocaine on man accused of being a gang member. On surveillance tape produced at trial, one officer tells another: 'Be creative in your writing.'
By Jack Leonard, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
7:42 AM PDT, July 1, 2008

A Los Angeles judge abruptly ended a trial and exonerated a man of possessing cocaine Monday after a courtroom confrontation in which a defense attorney produced a surprise video of his client's arrest that sharply contradicted the testimony of two police officers.

Superior Court Judge Monica Bachner dismissed charges against Guillermo Alarcon Jr., a grocery store worker, after prosecutors reviewed the tape and acknowledged that it was inconsistent with the officers' sworn testimony.

The film is a guilty pleasure, but people who I recommend the film to do not hold the same opinion.

As for the music score I don't remember much about it except for the end title sequence where you see Ms. Foster staring ahead looking at the camera and in the fireplace a most excellent fire burning behind her. It made it captivating that one wants to watch all the credits to the end.

Good morning, all! Another day with the Criswell chart.  My goal is to finish up everything that needs to be photocopied  (6 Violin 1 parts, etc) today and get them copied and taped tomorrow morning. So, my priorities today are the trombones, percussion, and piccolo, which is essentially the Flute 1 part. Once those are finished this morning, I'll begin the rundown from the top of the list. I may do harp and celesta first since keyboard parts are the worst in teerms of number of notes.

DR JRand57, I loved the photos, especially the one of you and Tyson, which could be a "before and after" photo for something, God knows what.

Yes, DR JMK, the screeners I get from studios directly come with nice lead times (paramount is usually more generous than Disney). When the Criterions go through a middle man, I become the victim of both his schedule and the USPS's delivery times. In the case of the latest Criterions, the discs were simply forgotten about due to a weeklong convention in Vegas last week (EMA), so they were 10 days getting PUT in the mail. Ah, well, I'll do 'em when I get 'em.

If I have any free time to watch something for fun, it'll be MURDER SHE WROTE and/or THE CLOSER (which should arrive today).

There was a very sad obituary in the paper this morning--a little boy who had gone to pre-school with Gabe, who had been plagued by a recurrent brain tumor, has died.  His parents were so cool back then, I don't think I could have handled the stress.  Finn had already had several surgeries even at that young age.  We lost track of them after "real" school started, but I was still shocked to see this this morning.

And who told me it looks delicious.

I think i mentioned that they sell it here on The Shopping Channel.

So i've seen the meals as they come. And then prepared.

And they really do look good.

That is why i said that i just cannot believe that they come in little unrefrigerated cardboard containers that you microwave.

What i saw looked like a chef prepared a nice gourmet meal.

On tv for me tonight:

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

And the CANADIAN IDOL results show.

Btw, on the Canadian version of HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA there was big trouble this week.

Obviously people have no idea how to vote.

There is this one kid who looks like 15 and she is like 5 feet tall. She is sweet. But i just don't see maria at all. And she has never been in the bottom.  There is another girl, who is a very good performer. But on tv she comes across as overweight. And her face looks really old. Now if you take off the 15 tv pounds, i'm not sure how big she would be. Maybe size 14. But her whole vibe just does not seem maria to me. Yet she has not been in the bottom at all and the judges adore her.

ALW's guy simon almost had a coronary though on monday's results show. His 2 favs were in the bottom 2. It was so stupid. This one girl allie (who got sent home) had never been my fav. But the night before she had done amazing. And i could finally see her as maria.  And my current fav jayme, was also in the B2. Simon freaked out. Didn't know what to do. But sent allie home.

Next week thankfully is broadway week. so hopefully we will get to see something interesting.

A lot of the girls are talented. But are so far from maria i just don't get why they the top 10!

I watched a movie on HBO last night called "Gray Matters".   It was quirky and entertaining.  I won't want to see it again.

But there was this one neat scene in which the two female leads discover they share a passion for the movie "Till the Clouds Roll By"....and then they jump up and dance the identical dance being danced on screen by Lucille Bremer and the very clunky Van Johnson.

It was cute.

"America's Got Talent" was almost a washout last night, but a couple of acts put it over the top at the end of the second hour (which is where they always manage to put the best ones).

One was a 24-year-old girl who sang and played guitar.  She reminded me of Laura Nyro.

The other was a small-for-his-age 9-year-old who had been, until age 3, diagnosed as autistic. It was music that seemed to break him out of his shell.  He stood on stage and sang "Ben"...and he was wonderful.

I just saw that the second season of PSYCH comes out on DVD next week. I had been looking for announcements for a long time and had seen none, so this is the first I had read about it.

I love this show!  Thanks for posting the info. :D

DR CILLA LIZ is, of course in the western mid west.

Actually I'm in the northern plains which is in the middle of the country and to the west of the mid west but to the east of the west. Go figure that one

For DR Jose and any other pizza lovers:
http://slice.seriouseats.com/jvpizza/

This guy has been serving pizza out of his house and is getting ready to open his own restaurant...less than a mile from our house! I'm sure with all the self-promotion and confidence he seems to have, it should do well!

He rates a lot of the pizza places in the northeast---some I've tried out and others I recall hearing about from DR Jose.

It's fascinating to me that the media reports on every single penny raise for gas prices, but is curiously silent when prices actually drop - which they have at every gas station in my neighborhood - not by much - two cents - but dropped they have.

My ankle feels so much better since it snapped.

You could introduce this techinque in "Legally Blonde III: The Middle Years" as Elle takes Bruiser for his geriatric walk and develops a hobble that gets better after she invents the "ankle snap".

The flight was uneventful; I was there early enough to change my seat for a bulkhead row with extra leg room.  :)

Actor Don S. Davis, a fine character actor, died of a massive heart attack on June 29, 2008.

Davis, age 65, was best known for his roles portraying military officers, most notable the Air Force general in "Twin Peaks" (he was a key figure in the "White Lodge" matter) and as General Hammond in "Stargate: SG-1".

Davis appeared in a vast number of movie and TV roles.

I, for one, will miss him.

Sorry to read about little Finn's passing.

Our paper carried an obit that shocked me, too - my former hairdresser Sally died at age 67.  As a single mom, she raised a wonderful son and daughter.  The daughter survived a severely abusive marriage (her husband almost killed her) and the whole family became activists against domestic violence.

That's what Richard used to do when we visited my mom there in the summers.  And, we'd have to wait until it cooled off later in the evening before we could go swimming (actually, we waited until the pool was shaded, but joked about it being cool enough to go swimming).

Back from a jog - managed to go the full distance, but it was easy today because I began thinking about one of the short story ideas I've had for the last year or so.   While I like all the ideas I've come up with so far (about four), this is the one that speaks loudest to me, so when I got back from the jog, I wrote the first two paragraphs of what will hopefully be the first in a new collection of short fiction.  I loved doing the last set of stories and people seemed to like them (although it is the lowest selling book of all mine - especially on this here site), so I think because I'm in such a writing mood, this will be a good thing to do for the rest of the year, at me leisure, doing as few or as many pages as I like.

Since I live in a state that has more pigs than people...no, pigs don't sweat. They don't have sweat glands.  That's why they roll in the mud and go in water.   The mud also serves as sunscreen

Mr. Producer and his pals are back shilling the new Gypsy CD on one of the chat boards.  How do you know it's him or his shill?  Easy, when all they do is talk about how brilliant the producer is and how GREAT all his recordings are, and how BRILLIANT the mix is on a certain CD he produced.  It's so patently obvious that it's hilarious.  And when someone (as someone did) comes in and posts something negative about a CD this person produced, the person, according to some with personal experience, get nasty PMs from said producer and shills, and then they are ridiculed in posts, usually with the standard line "Why do you have such hate for Time-Life?"  Note to producer and shills and Time-Life - some people will not like everything you do - get over it.

CINEMA SHOWCASE with Jim Whaley as host was my never-miss Saturday afternoon viewing experience. I didn't miss an episode for years and years and years. After I got a VCR, I used to record episodes for later playbkac if they involved people I liked or found interesting (Gloria Swanson was a memorable guest, so was Celeste Holm).

When I found out here years ago that you were friends with Jim, I searched and searched for episodes of the show I had taped, but I couldn't find a single one. I know they're at the ends of movies I taped off TV back in the day, but I've yet to stumble across a single one.

What DID come today was THE CLOSER, Season 3, so of course I had to watch one. The season begins with that gut-wrenching story of a family slaughter. I remembered the identity of the killer but not all the details of the case or the motive for murder, so in some ways, it seemed like I was watching it for the first time.

Naturally, I immediately went into another episode, the discovery of the gang member murdered in 1992. I remember the identity of the killer in this one but not the way they discover whodunit, so again, it's like seeing parts of it for the first time.

How do I love THE CLOSER? Let me count the ways. . . .

Here are a few more semifinalists lists on The Emmys. I'll start with one close to DR Edi's heart:

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Patricia Arquette, Medium
Glenn Close, Damages
Minnie Driver, The Riches
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: SVU
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Jeanne Tripplehorn, Big Love

No big surprises here. These are pretty much the actresses I would have thought would be in the running.

Next, the men:

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Eddie Izzard, The Riches
Hugh Laurie, House
Denis Leary, Rescue Me
James Spader, Boston Legal

Except for the omission of LOST's Matthew Fox, I can't quibble too much about this list. I would love to have seen Christopher Meloni's name again this year, but he really didn't have any showcase episodes this past season like in years past.

Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Kevin Dillon, Entourage
Justin Kirk, Weeds
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
John Krasinski, The Office
Jack McBrayer, 30 Rock
Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Fred Willard, Back to You
Rainn Wilson, The Office

One that I have never seen leaked before: the guest actress/comedy semifinalists:

Polly Bergen, Desperate Housewives
Edie Falco, 30 Rock
Vivica A. Fox, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives
Annie Potts, Ugly Betty
Carrie Fisher, 30 Rock
Shirley Knight, Desperate Housewives
Jane Lynch, Two and a Half Men
Amy Ryan, The Office
Sarah Silverman, Monk
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock

Elaine Stritch won this award last year. I didn't think she deserved it then, and I certainly don't think she deserves ANOTHER nomination for the same part.

Back from more errands.  Have had no Diet Coke yet, and have had one bottle of water.  I'm having a small steak for lunch, perhaps accompanied by a small bagel and small cream cheese.

I noticed that in the superset that is being released on Sondheim they are releasing the Evening Primrose soundtrack with Perkins and Carr, incidental music from the Enclave etc

Are they releasing any tracks you produced?

There's just nighthawks, bats, coyotes, jackrabbits, and cottontails that early in the morning.

Here it can be skunks so I try not to go out before 7:30.  Do you have streetlights?  We don't, making it far more dangerous to go so early.  Lately I'm not even getting out of bed to watch the sunrise :(

Next, the men:

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Eddie Izzard, The Riches
Hugh Laurie, House
Denis Leary, Rescue Me
James Spader, Boston Legal

Except for the omission of LOST's Matthew Fox, I can't quibble too much about this list.

What about Jeffrey Donovan in BURN NOTICE?

This is not accurate - what they are releasing of Evening Primrose are the songs (and I don't think they include the finale reprise of Take Me To The World) - none of the other tracks are being released so if you want the complete soundtrack to Evening Primrose, this is where you get it.

And no, they licensed none of my tracks - and that's fine by me, for why should others profit from my work, without me seeing a penny?

There was a very sad obituary in the paper this morning--a little boy who had gone to pre-school with Gabe, who had been plagued by a recurrent brain tumor, has died.  His parents were so cool back then, I don't think I could have handled the stress.  Finn had already had several surgeries even at that young age.  We lost track of them after "real" school started, but I was still shocked to see this this morning.

DR JMK, I'm so sorry to hear about this.  Even if it's not your own family, it's still a loss.  I'm sure your family is upset as well.  Your family and Finn's are definitely in my thoughts today.

Good Evening!

Almost there...

Today was a very easy day of rehearsal.  In fact, it was practically lazy.  All of us were a bit tired when we started the day, which was understandable at this point in the rehearsal process.  So, we started with warm-ups, and then just went over some sections.  Then once The Man from RUG came in, he really only wanted to talk things over with one of the soloist - he could tell that everyone was a bit vocally tired today too.  Then it was lunch.

After lunch, The Man from RUG just ran two numbers, and then spent the rest of his time there basically taking requests and entertaining us.  He's a film music buff, so he started going through various movie themes and songs.  Lots of fun.  -He really had nothing else to work on with the group.  :)

*One of the supervisors from the office was supposed to drop by rehearsal today to say goodbye to The Man from Rug, so just in case she did, The Man from RUG told everybody to start singing the refrain to "The Light At the End of the Tunnel" when we saw her car pull up.  ;)  -Thankfully(?), the thunderstorms this afternoon kept her office-bound.  But it was fun - and funny - having all of us be in cahoots.  -Or something like that.

Alas, it turns out that two of our cast members may end up having to join the ship in another port due to some major delays in getting their medical paperwork processed.  -It's always something.  -Fingers crossed.

I watched the first couple of episodes and set my DVR to record all new episodes, but not repeats.  But even though it's rebroadcast many times over the week, they're ALL marked as new, so my DVR indicated that it was going to record a dozen or so episodes! :P I deleted the series recording and have forgotten when the first real "new" episode is each week, so I think I've missed a couple. :-\

My DVR says they are all new also. I left the series recording and just delete all the extras under "future recordings"

I can do that too (I do it for Kathy Griffin's "My Life on the D-List"), but when I unselect an episode to be recorded, it still records the darn episode...and with so many episodes, my DVR gets filled up with stuff I don't want and it deletes things I want to keep. :P

After tomorrow night, I'll let you know.    8)

There was no one in line when we got there.  No protestors, either.  And one male couple in line behind us, before we were through.

We had initially booked the "chapel" right there in the County Clerk's office, in which case the ceremony would have been webcast and I could have sent you all a link, but then it turned out that our friend could do it, which is much more personal.  And also leaves DR dB with no blackmail material.   ;)

Thanks!   I'd post more pics but it's such a pain to crop and scale them down from 12 Megapixels.  I don't have the proper program on my computer so I upload them to photobucket then download them to my computer after I've  adjusted them then upload them to here.  LOL..  Quite a project.

Actually I'm in the northern plains which is in the middle of the country and to the west of the mid west but to the east of the west. Go figure that one

Prof. Tom Isern at NDSU would call western Iowa the far western edge  of the midwest. He defines the Great Plains as anything west of the 100th meridian.

I think it boils down to who is doing the defining.

I combine definitions and call a thin streak from the canadian border to about KC and from the 100th Meridian to western Iowa and Western MN as a cusp region. They embrace both aspects of distinct american regional culture.

Kim's musical director, who had told me when I took the job that he was leaving for Italy on July 4, has just informed me that he leaves tomorrow around 3 pm.  I've called Fed Ex and it looks as though a package mailed on Saturday July 5 may not arrive in Italy before the concert on the 9th.

so . . . I will be out of commission most of the day and probably most of the night!

You can (i can't) watch them at mtv.com.

I think i'm gonna go watch SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE now.

Btw, I just watched CANADIAN IDOL. And they are doing things very differently. Last week they had 24. And 2 nights of performances. ANd got rid of 2 per night (totally 4).

So now they have 20 and they got rid of 2 per night (total 4) so they have 16.

And the host said next week they will go to top 10. Meaning they will get rid of 3 per night (total 6). That seems crazy.

And even crazier is that another 2 girls went home tonight. There were only 9 to start. We lost 3 last week. And now 2. So there are only 4 girls out of 16.

There is really only one who is fantastic.

And there are these two brothers who are phenomenal. I'm betting one will win.

I don't think so.  I know that it has the global "new and repeats" or "new only" options and "this channel only" or "all channels," but I don't think that it has a "this time period every week" option...I'm pretty sure.  I'll check tonight. :)

I’ve been busy with an unsuccessful search on the internet looking for information regarding a ring I have that belonged to my aunt.

Today I happened to notice on the inside of the gold band it says WWH & Co.  I began a search & found a few items, no rings or jewelry, vintage items for sale.  Nothing was expensive.  I also found someone else requesting information regarding a WWH & Co. ring.  I can’t find anything on the company at all and am somewhat surprised & frustrated.

Have you tired the historical society in the town she lived in or perhaps if she received it as a gift where the ring was purchased? A historical society in a said place might reveal a few clues or even a library. I would check a city directory from about the time she got the gift for the initials WWH.

Jane in the info I sent you is from the William Wheatcroft Harrison Co...WWH & Co. It's a silversmith in Sheffield, England, but I don't see anything about jewelry, only silver cutlery etc. So it may not be the same co. I sent you an email that has a photo of their mark.

What you need is to find a book with jewelry marks and what company they belong to. I found one site, but there was no WWH

Thanks for all the good vibes.  DRLaura predicted correctly that I wouldn't be released from the hospitaluntil it hit 113 degrees.  I think it might have been hotter than that.  I am indeed lucky to have such a dear friend.  She visited with me before the surgery yesterday and stayed at the hospital thoughout the entire operation just to make sure I was OK (even I told her to go home--I didn't expect her to waste the whole day like that).

I am going to hop on down the hall and see if I can get some sleep.  It's been a long few days!

I have the windows and doors open, but it isn't nearly as cool tonight as last night. Maybe it'll cool off more in the next hour or so.

I began my evening of viewing by finishing the CLOSER episode which I had started in the late afternoon. This was the one I felt Sgt. Gabriel might hold against Brenda and end their friendship. So glad it didn't happen that way.

Since the Criterions didn't arrive today, I watched the next movie I had in my stack - STOP-LOSS.

A good picture about a military policy of reenlisting soldiers against their wills to continue active military service even when their contracts are up, it stars the very charismatic Ryan Phillippe. The script gets a bit bogged down in trying to direct focus on too many individuals affected by the Iraq war, but as long as the focus stays on Phillippe's character, the movie is very watchable. Directed by the same woman who did BOYS DON'T CRY.

There were only a few brief bonus features plus the commentary so I was able to get all of them watched this evening. Made me glad I took the afternoon off and just watched stuff for fun.

I ended my evening watching another episode of THE CLOSER. This was the one with the obnoxious bride and the always wonderful Flynn and Provenza. Their showcase episode is always great, and I really enjoyed seeing this again.

Oh, I also watched the deleted scenes and the gag reel on the first disc of THE CLOSER. There is one other bonus featurette that I'll watch tomorrow.

I think Ginny was partially right about why I got sick. I have been pushing myself SO much for the past couple months that I was exhausted and caught the bug that's going around.  So I decided the next 4 days are no work allowed days.  I am officially on vacation.  Then I can return rested and ready to dive in again.  I have a feeling I am going to sleep very well tonight.

I'm hoping to get up and get on the road fairly early, but I still have to pack and do some chores around the house before going.

I don't think so.  I know that it has the global "new and repeats" or "new only" options and "this channel only" or "all channels," but I don't think that it has a "this time period every week" option...I'm pretty sure.  I'll check tonight. :)

George, there should be a "record as series" option for a tV series.

Today (July 3) is my Mom's 80th birthday, and we will celebrate with my Mom and Dad by going to New Jersey, which is where my brother and sister-in-law live.

The Vegas trip I had planned for my Mom for her 80th (we had gone on her 75th) will not be happening, though, not in July anyway.  She's been having terrible arm pain and feels like she doesn't feel up to the five-hour flight.

I left the office at 12:15 am. I photocopied all orchestra parts for two players, 5 copies of Violin 1 & 2, 3 copies of cello, bass, and viola, and taped everything together. Not bad for 8 hours. I have yet to churn out Trumpet 3, Trombone 3, Tuba, Drums, Harp and Celesta. I might be able to finish if I don't go to bed. I just had a cup of rreally strong coffee, and I think I'll take a cold bath.

DR George, I have been peripherally involved with the ALLEGRO recording for the past year: at one point I was asked to make casting suggestions, and I got invited to several sessions in town that I didn't attend: I thought there was enough going on with recording soloistsand chorus that they didn't need extra personnel hanging aroun. The ALLEGRO was recorded at the same time as a complete SOUND OF MUSIC, which has yet to be cast. I hope both are big successes so that R&H will consider doing a complete CAROUSEL and OKLAHOMA!
