Title: THE SYMPHONIC NOTES
Post by: bk on July 08, 2008, 12:26:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were symphonic and had movements, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing an adagio and it's very slow going.

I must say, going cold turkey and staying away from those two theater chat boards was so easy and the day and evening is so much nicer without having to read those boards.

For Cillaliz:

(From an Email)

Quote
As I watched the news coverage of the massive flooding in the Midwest with over 100 blocks of the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, under water with the levees breaking, and the attention now turned downstream for when this massive amount of water hits the Mississippi,  what amazed me is not what we saw,  but what we didn't see...

1.  We don't see looting.
2.  We don't see street violence.
3.  We don't see people sitting on their rooftops waiting for the government to come and  save them.
4.  We don't see people waiting on the government to do anything.
5.  We don't see Hollywood organizing benefits to raise money for people to rebuild.
6.  We don't see people blaming President Bush.
7.  We don't see people ignoring evacuation orders.
8.  We don't see people blaming a government conspiracy to blow up the levees as the reason some have not held.
9.  We don't see the US Senators or the Governor of Iowa crying on TV.
10.  We don't see the Mayors of any of these cities complaining about the lack of state or  federal response.
11.  We don't see or hear reports of the police going around confiscating personal firearms  so only the criminal will be armed.
12.  We don't see gangs of people going around and randomly shooting at the rescue  workers.
13.  You don't see some leaders in this country blaming the bad behavior of the Iowa flood victims on "society"  (of course there are no wide spread reports of lawlessness to require excuses).

Re:  Iowa  vs.  Louisiana:

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem?  Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a "vanilla" Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

The movie time was 9:55 pm and I got there right about that time...and there was no one in the theater!  NO ONE!  However, after 20 minutes of previews, probably half a dozen or so more people eventually showed up.

Otherswise, let me say:  Wow!  It's a wonderful movie!  The story is practically perfect and the visuals are absolutely stunning!  It was this theater's digital presentation, so the picture was incredible...except for the permanent mark (rip?) on the screen. :P

BK is right!!  Go see this movie. :D They way they used the two songs from "Hello, Dolly!" (without Babs) is perfect!  The music score otherwise never made a specific impression on me, other than very good background/silent movie-type music.  It very muchly went along with what was going on, but I didn't recognize (or even notice) any melodies or tunes.  Regardless, GO SEE THIS!! ;D

I only own the Beethoven Symphonies. I also own a recording of Copeland music but I wonder if you can call them a symphonies.

What makes a piece a music symphonic? It's orchestration?

I have a a track called The Sound of Music Suite for Orchestra -"A Symphonic Picture for Orchestra"  does this mean it's actually a symphony?

Inquiring minds want to know

It's been a very productive past few days. As I mentioned, we have a working cell phone. I activated it yesterday and now it will sit unused until Anthony comes back to the city and begins to use it to become familiar with it. I've updated things on three computers (our desktop here in the city, our laptop here in the city and the computer on Long Island) and I now have a ticket to Madison, WI. I will be seeing a certain production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying starring (well, almost) a certain referenced actor on this site. I got a great deal (considering the price of airfares). $273 round trip on Continental and it's nonstop!

I'll be a busy traveler in August and September because I'm going to Minnesota for a weekend in early August, after Anthony leaves for Wisconsin. Remember when flying used to be fun?

Good Morning Dear Larry!

I have that CD too!

And as much as adore the Hanson, I bought the CD for the Barber.  The first movement of that violin concerto has an achingly beautiful theme.  -And the piano reduction of the orchestra "part" works very well too.

-And keeping with concerted concerto works: the second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G.

Michelangeli's recording always seems to rank high up on people's lists in regards to a recording of this work, however, I also like Martha Argerich's very visceral rendition.  But the one I go to most often is Krystian Zimerman with the Cleveland Orchestra under Pierre Boulez (on DG).  Some exquisite playing, and very good recording, technically speaking.

Last night i watched the BACHLORETTE for the first time in many years (i was with someone who really wanted to watch it).

I will say that it made me remember why i dislike the show so much.

It's all great that the couple is sooo happy. But it made me sick to watch what she did to the guy she did not take at the end.

Apparently this girl had been the one ditched last by a guy named brad. And she was so sad and vowed not to do this to anyone. Yet she did it. And had the nerve to say last night, "until watching it back i had no idea i realized i did the same thing to him that brad did to me!"

I hate watching someone say, "oh that was the romantic thing ever" and "i'm falling in love with you". and making out with the guy she will reject (the night before she gets engaged).

I really preferred the guy she rejected.  I just wish that when they edited the shows that they would edit it to make you feel the love story of the winner. And make you root for the winner. Instead they try to balance it and make most people end up being annoyed!

It's supposed to be hot and muggy today. I turned on the air conditioner last night. Global warming? I'd rather live in the snow than the heat. That's why I can't retire to Arizona or Florida (sorry Kerry, Laura and Lyn and Michael Shayne and Danise).

Ben I agree with you completely!   I'd much rather live in the snow than the heat.   I tried Arizona and it didn't agree with me. But I must admit it was better than having humidity. The other day I could barely breathe. That's just not acceptable

And the good news is that earlier today, I found my CD-R of the London cast recording of 1776!  I still have out my version of the laserdisc soundtrack.  Now, was it only Ben that wanted the London version and Matt H. that wanted the movie soundtrack?  Or is that correct?  Let me know...and soon! ;)

No, DR George. You've already sent me the movie soundtrack (some years ago). I think it was DR Ron Pulliam who wanted the movie soundtrack.

Today I'll be catching up on a couple of things. I want to finish MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST that I started yesterday. (I have about 40 minutes to go but a lot of that is commercials). I recorded BONES last night since the episode is from this season, so I'll watch that while I cook and eat lunch.

And then, I'll be working on the Blu-ray of STEP UP 2 THE STREETS, another hip-hop dance movie similar to HOW SHE MOVE that I watched and wrote about some two months ago.

Sorry for all the problems with ALL MY SONS, DR JRand. I've been in shows where cast members stubbornly refused to learn their lines or write down their blocking, and it's always maddening for others in the cast who do.

My worst experience with this was several years ago with MY THREE ANGELS. A couple of those guys kept their scripts in the wings all through the run and would go over lines before they would walk out on stage. The dialog exchanges with me were always "approximations" of what was supposed to be in the script and sections were always skipped which I'd have to deal with. One of the most miserable experiences I've ever had on stage.

Jane Robelot (http://www.wyff4.com/wyffnewsteam/10715496/detail.html), former CBS anchor person.  She left CBS's morning show after she was diagnosed with Graves' disease.

Her brother Tommy was a classmate of mine in high school.  Tommy lives in Greenville SC with his family.  Jane went to Atlanta GA with her family, and then returned to Greenville a year after having surgery to repair her heart.  She is working again and doing TV reports at a local station.

No matter how it's argued, DR Jennifer, it was still illegal and copyrighted and someone took issue with it.

Many times, things appear on youtube, and elsewhere, and the owners of the copyright "don't" make an issue of it.  Sometimes, it's far too much trouble, or it's too costly.

Fact is, though, that there are tens of thousands of copyright violations on the internet at any given time...if that few.

So...if it disappeared, it means someone took serious issue with it.  In this case, it's probably because it involves music from a current show on Broadway, and the clips are from a current show on TV trying to find a future cast for the show.

Just because everybody else does this stuff doesn't make it right.

I actually managed to get all three of my Revue women over here last night for a run-through of at least some of the group numbers.  All I can say is, I am not going to be particularly sympathetic toward the guys when they start complaining (and you KNOW they're going to complain) about not knowing their music once we hit the stage.  We have a grand total of three rehearsals (one of which has to get the blocking and lighting cues down, oy) before we open.  They have had every opportunity to come over on numerous occasions, so c'est la vie.

Last night's HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA elimination was sort of interesting.

In the first few weeks the judges never really made their desires known. But this week they basically told the public how to vote. Now this can sometimes go wrong (a la American idol's simon). But this week the public did exactly what the judges told them to do.

They put the judges least favorites into the b3. So it was not that difficult for ALW's flunky to decide.

They are now down to 6 girls. And apparently next week they will lose another 2.

One very interesting development is during the sunday night show the vocal coach (and judge, elaine something) said some very harsh comments re: one of the girls.

This girl i'd say is in their top 4. She is a fantastic performer. HAs an incredible voice. But to me is not the traditional maria. Or anything near it. She is heavier than the others and has a very mature look to her face.

Anyhow on sunday's show the vocal coach/judge said that rehearsals counted just as much as performances. and that this girl (donna) was acting like a diva in rehearsals. And that she did not take notes well.

I wish they had shown us what they were talking about. Because coming out of context and out of the blue like that, i thought it was incredibly damaging.

The more interesting part is that on last night's show the host confronted both the girl and the judge. Crazy!

I did not know they were not allowed to post this on youtube.
I guess part of why it seemed odd is that there are the same clips from the same show still there by other posters.

Plus it is great publicity for the show.

I guess i'm not understanding why it's okay for some of the videos that are there. There are thousands of videos of tv shows on youtube. So do they only remove them if someone complains?

I actually thought the shows would love the publicity. And as long as they were not posted in their entirety i really thought it was allowed.

Some clips on youtube are in public domain.  If you were to go to Amazon.com and look them up, you'd find multiple DVD versions of them being sold.

Sometimes the owner of the copyright on older material is not clearcut.  Even the true owner may not know he or she owns it.

A lot of stuff is available, I agree.  Much of it would probably be an "issue" if it were of high quality.  I think that's probably the line that gets drawn in many cases....stuff that is downloaded isn't from original sources, but off TV broadcasts and the quality is often quite bad.

In fact, there is an now an office over at Equity that will routinely monitor what's put up on YouTube, and will have things taken off the site if they are deemed in violation of copyright - as well as the rights' of the actors, technicians, musicians and production staff involved with the show.  Alas, there really is just too much stuff on there to be wiped out in one fell swoop, but, again, as DR Ron Pulliam stated, that doesn't make it right.  -And it seems that most of the TV networks don't take action themselves - even though they could - since the clips act as free promotion for their shows.

My guess is that the quality of the clips that the "best poster" posted more than likely prompted immediate action.  *And since the MTV show does show clips from the actual Broadway production, both the theatrical and TV unions would and could have issue with posting clips from the show.  *And if you had access to the reports of the initially botched agreements to have Legally Blonde taped and broadcast on MTV in the first place, you'd probably would not be so upset/annoyed that the clips were taken down.  Attention - and people! - must be paid!  ;)

Good morning!

I'm just now catching up on the rest of yesterday's posts, and saw bk's correction to Gerome Ragni. The reason I posted it as a JR was because I went to the internet to check the spelling (as a kid, I always thought of the name as "Ragini"). Back when "Wicked" was in its pre-Broadway phase and playing at S.F.'s Curran Theater, someone posted digital clips of most of the show's songs on Kristin Chenoweth's internet site.  That lasted about a day.  Those lucky souls who copied them are indeed fortunate, but stern warnings were posted there that the site would not host anything illegal.

Well.. If there is a common misspelling out there on the website, Google will find that too.

-And to keep this in line with the recent posts here, all you have to do is Google: "Kirsten Chenoweth", "Kristen Chenoweth", "Kristin Chenoweth", "Kirstin Chenoweth", etc., and you will come up with correct hits for all the various spellings and misspellings.

And I proudly point out that in this post:

Back when "Wicked" was in its pre-Broadway phase and playing at S.F.'s Curran Theater, someone posted digital clips of most of the show's songs on Kristin Chenoweth's internet site.  That lasted about a day.  Those lucky souls who copied them are indeed fortunate, but stern warnings were posted there that the site would not host anything illegal.

I spelled it correctly!

I had a ton of mail awaiting me this morning -- all of it personal.  Lots of great stuff overpacked in large boxes.  I took a humongous pile and -- by removing the contents from boxes -- converted it into a large pile.  One box -- the collector's edtion of "Planet of the Apes" -- is the only thing keeping it from being an easily manageable pile.  Oy!  The DVD box is the size of a medium-sized desk fan.

We have the most horrendous air quality this week.  Singdaw and Jayson are extremely fortunate they were here when they were.  I know Jayson had some smoke to contend after his arrival, but it was minimal compared to now.  For most of the holiday weekend, we had ocean breezes that kept the smoke out of the area.

Now we have a high pressure system is in a counter-clockwise -- and going-nowhere-fast -- rotation over the entire Bay Area.  The fog isn't rolling in.  And the system is picking up smoke from all the hundreds of fires in this region and mixing it with vehicle exhaust.  It was impossible for me to see more than half a mile yesterday from my condo.  I normall can see the bay and the land beyond (South San Francisco).

My eyes won't stop watering, and I've been inside the past two hours.

Just because everybody else does this stuff doesn't make it right.

Well said, DR Ron!

We have been battling people putting our whole Internationale film up there. And it's annoying seeing people thank the person posting it and resenting it when the filmmakers suggest that they should buy a copy.

I imagine one day there will be something like ASCAP or BMI imposed on Youtube and its ilk to cut down on some of this. In the meantime, it's pretty annoying for people who haven't even finished paying-off their independent films to see them offered for free!

My guess is that the quality of the clips that the "best poster" posted more than likely prompted immediate action.

Are you meaning that the quality was too good?

Anyhow, i still don't get why it was taken down. And others weren't.

If mtv would just allow canadians to watch mtv.com i would not have to watch on youtube. :(

I find it especially odd since mtv.com shares programming with mtv.ca.
Apparently the show may start airing in canada on much music aug 17th. That's what i was told.

I just wanna see episode 6. :(

I don't really see this as the same thing. Obviously posting an entire film especially an independent one is a big no-no.

What i was talking about was just pieces of a reality show, that there is no other way to see (for me anyway, you guys can watch it for free on mtv.com).

Finally off the telephonic device - had to have a few conversations with the publisher, who, I must say, is moving much more slowly than I care for.  They had a problem with the cover and back cover images that Grant sent - something about it being less than 300 dpi, but it would have been no different than the Hollywood High cover.  The photo we used was 180dpi, but then Grant did all his stuff in photoshop and sent them an uncompressed pdf of it, so he says it should print fine.  The gal I was talking to was towing the party line and I told her to stop and tried to make her understand this was my eighth book with them and I needed things to move along a little faster.  She got terse with me, and that was that - I told her to transfer me to the gal I used to deal with years ago, because whenever I have this sort of thing happen I go right to her - she's very high up on the food chain and gets things done.  The gal I was talking to said "I can assure you this is not the way to deal with us" and I replied "And I can assure you this is not the way to deal with me" - she then put me through to my gal, and my gal laughed and assured me she'd figure out what was going on, and what needed to get done and then move this along to the next step immediately.  I also told her that the guy who's my new rep never responds to my e-mails or calls, and she said she'd deal with that, too, as she, like me, feels that's unacceptable.

As for the quality being too good, well, that's a possibility.  His clips could have also been flagged due to the number of views he was getting.

As for why or why not a clip gets taken down, well... ???

And as for pleading to AEA (Equity), you will also have to plead your case to the stagehands union, the musicians union, the dressers union, and so on and so forth.

I'm sorry that MTV Canada is not carrying the show, but, alas, that's what you get for living in Canada.  ;)

*And just remember:  Would you be OK with someone - or a slew of someones - posting your picture/image/movie/show all over the place without your pemission and/or knowledge?  And suppose you had written a script or a song, would you want that to be "shared" with everyone without any sort of monetary renumeration?

-Besides, I'm sure there is some sort of not too complicated work around to see the clips on MTV's US website on your side of the border.  ;)

Good Morning, Ginny!  To answer your question from some time, yes, I broke my right ankle this time, so you and I could be a whole person (kind of like DRLaura and I each have half a brain:  together we make up a whole brain).

As far as getting from one room to another, I am lucky in that I live in a flat, first floor, one floored space.  Sometime ago, the errant and truant DRMusicGuy and I used to live in a house that no matter which room you entered, you had to go up or down two steps.  We learned the pitfalls of this when I dislocated my knee one summer.   Later when our Basset Hound got hip dysplasia, I knew just how much trouble she had with those steps.  Since then, the house we had after that was just one level as is my current apartment and his current condo.  We may not have learned much in 20 years, but we learned that.  We have great friends in the midwest who have a 3 or 4 story house (which is quite lovely) but the stairs are beginning to prove quite the problem now that these guys are not the perpetually young guys they still are in my head.

Your comments last night about watching The King and I with a broken ankle reminded me of how I felt watching gymnastics trials two weeks ago.  Every time someone landed, my foot throbbed.

Our house is a 2-story, but we pretty much live on the first floor, so I've also been pretty content.  My only challenge is getting down 2 steps into our family room when I want a change of scenery and down the next 2 steps when I need to get to the car.  Actually, down isn't too bad, but up still isn't pretty.

Tonight is a dress rehearsal/family night so that family members can come and take photos and see the show....such as it is.

I am sure I will get an earful of "helpful suggestions" afterwards.  One of the reasons I never give it unless asked, is that I know how I feel about it when I am directing.  It has been my experience that the Director knows exactly what is wrong....thank you very much.

DR JENNIFER a protest about a clip would be about that particular clip on YOU TUBE and not ALL clips on the same subject or with the same material.

Since the poster lost ALL of her/his clips, he probably had been warned at least once and asked to remove the clips, and when that didn't happen, action was taken.

Most of the material from movies/tv/stage on YOUTUBE belongs to somebody, or many somebodies....and those broadcast rights are controlled and protected.

On the other hand, der Brucer and I have come to a rather dangerous agreement.

It's time for me to start driving again.

I have very happily not been a driver since before der B and I coupled.  I have some problems with my depth perception, and simply do not trust myself behind the wheel of any vehicle.

But that attitude is about to come to an end.  The simple fact is, der B isn't as happy behind the wheel as he used to be.  In fact, it wears him out a lot faster now than it used to.  And, since we're no longer in the chaos that is the Los Angeles Freeway System (and surface street mania), a lot of the reasons behind my pavement panic should not come into play.

So, be glad none of you are in Delaware.  If you were, the kook driving the car next to yours could well be me!

Thinkin' about it, DR Singdaw!  Aside from prescriptions, I've spent very little money in the past month.  We've joked about how I picked a great time, with gas at $4/gallon, not to be driving 50 miles a day to work and back.

You and I can start a "washing up service" and we will focus on bowls and balls (of the tea variety)
Sounds great to me.  They have every other kind of personal service that I think tea balls and oatmeal bowls have their places too!

Big social outing planned for our family this evening!  In a little while, we're going to pick up my mom and bring her into town for dinner at the new senior center that's opened at the end of our street.  It's kind of become our "club," as Richard was going up there pretty regularly to use the exercise equipment before he had to become my nurse.  They serve dinner Monday-Thursday and we either go there or he gets carry-out at least once a week.

DS Rob is back home for a few days and is *thrilled* to get in on this sparkling event!

Then I watched STEP UP 2 THE STREETS on Blu-ray. Just another variation of "let's put on a show" only with hip-hop/street dance instead of swing as Judy and Mickey did it.

The story took place at MSA (Maryland School of the Arts - a high school of the performing arts in Baltimore). Is there such a place in Baltimore?

I thoroughly agree.  I cannot think of a more egregious story arc/disposition of a major character than the one "Bones" perpetrated upon its viewers with this Gormogon thing.  It's all right in the long run, as I will look forward to new shows, but it has forever soured that character for me and I no longer enjoy any of the scenes in past episodes with the character.

A co-worker just returned from a weekend in Reno.  He said the smoke there was horrible.

Prior to his arrival, I had a computer emergency, one of those weird completely inexplicable happenings.  I was in the midst of sending e-mails of sheet music to our leading man - I'd done about six.  As I clicked to send the seventh it wouldn't send.  I went to AOL to see if there was some problem there, and it wouldn't load anything.  I then looked at my wireless bars and they were OFF.  I clicked and there was, for the first time ever, a lock icon next to my wireless network.  I clicked on it, and it asked for a password.  I gave it, for the first time ever, and it wouldn't unlock or take it.  I tried unplugging the Airport Extreme, I tried restarting the computer, all to no avail.  I then called Apple Care and they talked me through a few things that also didn't work.  They were baffled so they switched me over to the Airport Extreme folks.  They, too, were baffled.  We changed the security that I was using, created a new password that would become part of my keychain so I wouldn't always have to type it in, but it still wouldn't connect.  He then had me create a new "location" for the Airport Extreme and that did the trick, so hopefully we're fine from now on.  That stuff really freaks me out.

Earlier, I mentioned problems with people at the publishers.  I went around everyone to the gal who handled my very first book.  She's quite high up in the company now, and within five minutes she'd been to the art department, ascertained they could indeed print the cover from what we sent them, moved the process along so I was called today to get my design call scheduled (previously that was going to happen four weeks from now) - that call will now happen Thursday, so I'm guessing that I'll have a galley late next week, plus cover proofs.  Once those are approved, that process is done and test books will come to me, so I could conceivably have books in hand within five to six weeks.  So, I think I'm going to have the Kritzerland web designer add the book to the site and get it available for preorder late next week.  As I've mentioned, I think everyone will really like the little "surprise" that's going to come with the first thirty copies preordered - I may up that to forty copies if the first thirty go really fast.

*And just remember:  Would you be OK with someone - or a slew of someones - posting your picture/image/movie/show all over the place without your pemission and/or knowledge?  And suppose you had written a script or a song, would you want that to be "shared" with everyone without any sort of monetary renumeration?

I'm trying to understand both sides. And in DR Edi's case i get it.

But i guess to me since these clips are available already online for free, i don't really see the harm. The more people that watch this the better publicity for the show.

-Besides, I'm sure there is some sort of not too complicated work around to see the clips on MTV's US website on your side of the border.  ;)

I believe you've gotten several reasonable and rational responses.  Whether you accept them or not is up to you.  My recommendation, however, is to contact the management of youtube and ask them why they took the clips down rather than belabor the point here where no one can help you.

I did actually look into this.

But a) i don't have an account there.

and b) they do not make it easy to make a request like this.

They have a bunch of contact issues that are specific. And you are supposed to clip on one of them. They make it quite easy to report a problem or violation. But not to ask a question.

I think you are right. That someone protests a specific video and that person's account gets suspended.

The thing i didn't get (and still don't get) is the people who would have found issue with these videos would have found issue with others that are basically exactly same.

My guess now is actually that perhaps the person got in trouble for a different video and it is just their whole account that got removed.

Thanks for all the help.

I am new to youtube. And am just figuring this all out!

It was just one show, the MTV show THE SEARCH FOR ELLE WOODS.

We are in a one story house & plan to only live on one level from now on.  It is easier on the dogs as they age and on our bodies.  I remember breaking my ankle years ago.  The boys were at camp and Keith was traveling for work.  I could only manage one trip downstairs a day to the kitchen.  I was very hungry.

But i guess to me since these clips are available already online for free, i don't really see the harm.

The more people that watch this the better publicity for the show.I have thought of this.

DR JENNIFER - Again, it is illegal to post any sort of copyrighted material on any sort of website.  Someone found the "illegal content" and took it down.  The clips on MTV's website are supposed to be exclusive to MTV's website - they are the property of MTV.   -It's just like when some sites do not allow "hot-linking" to their pictures and video content.

And as for publicity... MTV - nor the producers of Legally Blonde: The Musical - seem to be doing much publicity for the show - at least not here in NYC.  No show on MTV ever garners that many ratings points.  Any extra "free" publicity seems negligible to me.  However, I do know that the Tuesday after Laura Belle Bundy's last performance, the "winner" will be starting her run as Elle Woods.  -Sadly(?), I suspect they may end up editing the MTV show to make it look like the girl learned the whole show in the span of a week or less, when, in fact, she's basically been in training and in rehearsal for almost two months now.

One episode was all I could stand and stopped watching. Really not my kind of show at all.

I had the chance to review the first season of DVDs and turned that down, too.

Ours friends lent us their NetFlix and said we must watch all the episodes on it.  She had wanted to stop after the first one & only continued because he enjoyed it.  I didn't expect to like it & only watched because I like Duchovney.  His character becomes more endearing with each episode, IMHO.

I bet you wish she was still handling your case!

It's good that you still have her as a back-up though.

Iron Chef America entertains and inspires me.

Lost entertains.  Heroes entertains, even though I lost track about half-way through the second season due to my work schedule and will have to wait for the DVD set to come out in order to catch up.

Next Food Network Star is kind of entertaining.  That's the closest to anything like the competitions you regularly watch.  Right now I'm rooting for Aaron to win (I think that's his name).  But the end result isn't going to change my world in any way.  It's just another competition.  (Interesting to note, only two of the contestants from the previous seasons have really made any kind of mark in the broadcasting world... and one of them lost on NFNS and instead got picked up by another network!)

Umm... A "regular" slice of cheese usually contains 10-12 grams of fat.  How many slices were on your sandwich?  (For your reference, one of those cello-wrapped slices of American Cheese is usually 120-140 calories - most of which are from fat.) And surely you have to know that bacon has fat in it too?  And was the slaw mayo free too?

Jose makes an important point here.  Many of these shows have been filmed/taped months in advance.  They are not broadcast live.  The "liveness" is an illusion, created by the show's host (and often the contestants) speaking directly to the camera, which generates the effect that they are speaking directly to the audience.  They are not.  They are speaking to the guys working in the control booth and the editing room.

There's also a great amount of attention given by the producers of these shows to creating "personas" for the contestants.  I remember during that Grease contest that they kept referring to the girls as the "perky" Sandy, or the "dark haired" Sandy, and so on.  (Der Brucer insisted on watching.  He enjoys the occasional train wreck, he also watched Hells Kitchen, what can I say.   ::))  This is audience manipulation, and rather base in my opinion, reminiscent of They Shoot Horses, Don't They.

My bet is that, after Laura Belle Bundy leaves Legally Blonde, even with the contest for her replacement, the show's days nights will be numbered.

One small slice of cheese, thin.  Two strips of bacon total (there really isn't all that much fat in bacon - I've checked, and not many calories at all).  They don't lard on the chicken salad - very reasonable portion on white toast.  Mayo free slaw.  My guess is that the calorie count was around six or seven hundred, if that, and maybe twenty grams of fat (I can eat up to thirty and always lose weight).

Contrast the above with a foot-long Subway club - much bigger sandwich, roast beef, oil and vinegar, provolone cheese, etc.  Calorie count for that sandwich is 625.

Probably a little of both, more severe than you thought & you are still sensitive.  The bruising doesn't surprise me.  I'm very sensitive to bruising if I tie my shoe laces too tight.

Until this heals I suggest avoiding aspirin, or anything else that might encourage bruising.

-Besides, I'm sure there is some sort of not too complicated work around to see the clips on MTV's US website on your side of the border.  ;)

The official MTV site for the show has all the auditions and I think you can watch the episodes there.

DR Jennifer, the simple answer is if they wanted to prosecute you could go to prison for violating copyright law. I have a client who was prosecuted for selling copies of computer programs on eBay.  There was a brief time when the government went after people downloading and sharing music.

There are groups out there who monitor what is being sold, posted etc.  If someone is profiting, then they may be looking at prosecution. If not, then they will sometimes be stopped.

Having the work out there without anyone paying for the right to show it would be like going to work everyday and not being paid because the people you come in contact with want whatever it is you do for free.  I'm sure there are many who would think that's a great deal

Sounds like people who call the library for legal or medical advice and get upset when we tell them they need to contact an attorney or physician.  I've actually had someone say, "But they'll charge me money - can't you tell me for free?"

We even look up phone numbers for people who are too cheap to call directory assistance.

I've been e-mailing mp3s and sheet music for the last two hours.  Very slow going.  And now we're going to audition two people - not my idea of a Tuesday night, but it should go quickly and then I shall sit on my couch like so much fish.

Join the Jolly Old Elf himself for breakfast in Times Square at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill!  Whether you are 2 or 62 there is nothing more memorable than the time you sat on Santa’s lap and asked for that special gift.

New York City Vacation Packages is offering an exclusive limited seating breakfast with Santa on select dates. Why fight the crowds and large lines for a moment with Santa when you can share in this intimate gathering?

The breakfast buffet includes scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, sausage, pancakes, bacon, toast, and orange juice, tea or coffee, all taxes and gratuity and one Polaroid picture with Santa per person.

2008 Schedule:
Breakfast is available at 8am or 10am on 11/28, 11/29, 12/20 or 12/21

I think all the good job vibes helped!  :)

Well, I had my first day on the new job.  Since it has a lot to do with loans & mortgages, I am not quite up to par with the lingo but am catching on somewhat.  I am very much overwhelmed in the brain but hopefully things will start sinking in in the next couple of days or by end of the week.  The people there are very nice and very patient with me and don't get upset with me when I have a lot of questions, that's a good thing!  Had a 5 hour training and then listened in to calls for 3 hours.

Since you are an attorney, just a question, if someone checks out CD's from a public library and downloads it to their own collection but doesn't sell any of those things, just keeps for their own collection is all, is that considered illegal?  Just curious.

DR Vixmom, Well, I'm called a HOPE Specialist, I'm still learning what that is exactly.  It is for Wilshire Financial Services in Oregon.  I know we help with possible payment arrangements on mortgages and such.  Just my first day and I have no experience in this area but they are willing to train.

Probably, but no one is going to do anything about it if you don't share it or try to profit from it. That's not a legal opinion, though.

Hi, DR Vixmom!

Ginny... are you still goingt obe anble to make your NYC trip in September after your foot injury?

August 27-September 1 (Labor Day weekend + Wednesday-Friday before).  Yes, we'll be there!  I have made a lot of progress in the past week and should be at least 80% by the end of August.  Probably no long walking tours with Jose, though, and we'll no doubt use more transit than usual.  We'll see...

And, for disclosure's sake, this was elective surgery (just a shade more serious than cosmetic) not an injury.  It was really an investment to keep my foot from looking and feeling in 30 years like my mother's does now.

Had a nice evening of viewing.

I began by finishing up STEP UP 2 THE STREETS' bonus features. There really wasn't much left. 6 music videos that together ran about 22 minutes. A video prank ran 2 minutes, and some Easter eggs I stumbled on ran about 1 1/2 minutes each.

Next I watched another CLOSER episode - the (hopefully) Emmy nominated "Man Hunt" that is so wonderful. It's probably the episode from season 3 that I rewatched the most when I originally recorded it before deleting it from the DVR.

I think it's a very strong episode for Kyra with many different situations to showcase her talents.

Next I watched THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINKSY'S. I'd never seen this all the way through, and though it's kind of a mess in construction and execution, there's some good stuff in there, and I did basically like it. Sad to see Bert Lahr so feeble (he died during production).

Back from a quick meal at Hugo's.  I was actually quite hungry, as my jog today was at full speed and went a little longer than usual.  Plus, I'd only eaten that pretty small sandwich for lunch.  So, I had Papa's Eggs - scrambled eggs and turkey sausage and scallions - very tasty, very reasonable portion (definitely not more than two eggs), and a little fruit on the side - no bread.  It was just right.

I was up getting my mail this afternoon and I decided to jog there instead of my usual route.  Since I didn't know distances there, I did what I thought was similar, but it, in fact, was longer.  It was fun to switch up the nabe - lots of new things to look at, plus I really put some speed in the jog today for the first time since I started jogging again.

I must say, people have finally moved in to the house to the north of me and they are a complete bunch of guttersnipe lowlifes.  They hang out outside a lot (perhaps their place isn't air-conditioned).  My guess is that someone inherited the house, since it was never up for sale.  They hang out, talk loud, guffaw, and unfortunately they do this on the side of their house that is next to my bedroom.  Thankfully, they seem to migrate inside by eleven.

What am I doing up so late?  Still ruminating over the experience of having seen TITLE OF SHOW tonight.  I suspect struggling theater writers will find it hilarious, insightful and disturbing; I have no idea how people who have no interest in being in the world of theatre will relate to it.  But I will say that the much-minimized-by-some production values are no less elaborate than many other shows for which I've paid close to $100 a ticket, and I suspect that whatever the "official" ticket price is, very few people are paying anywhere near that.  They must label the ticket $110 to get $47.50; one of the things producers must deal with in the 2000's.  But the physical set is even more elaborate than that for Spring Awakening, Xanadu or A Chorus Line, let alone Equus and other plays, as far as this scenically-untrained eye can see.

And now George is sitting there like so much fish.

I'm ketchuping.  My family (parents, visiting aunts, etc.) got together at my sister's house and we all played Phase 10, but I got there late.  I watched for a while and when my mom decided to read the paper, I took over for her.  I did not win at all.  My sister made a strawberry dessert and it was very good.  After the game was over, my mom and my two aunts wanted to go to the casino...again.  They've gone several times and just love it.  They only play the penny slots, so they're never dealing with much money, but they just love it.

Since my dad came to my sister's with my mom and his sisters, I had to drive him home and install an under-the-counter CD player for my mom.  It was fairly easy to do and it all worked.  After that, I installed a new kitchen faucet.  Taking out the old faucet was a pain (as usual), but putting in the new one was very easy.
