Well, you've read the notes, the notes appealed to our unknown demographic, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out what their demographic is.
-
And the word of the day is: CONTEMN!
-
Seven GUESTS and ME.
-
I guess I should try to get some beauty sleep, so I can be perky tomorrow. If I'm to jog I have to either do it first thing, or directly after the phoner and before the MD gets here. Of course, I also have to shave and shower.
-
DR MBarnum, we realliy enjoyed A Rage to Live. The good old-fashioned kind of film that they don't make any more. And liked the score, too.
As for Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, well... We enjoyed that, too. In a different kind of way. We laughed a lot! :)
-
Since today's title is DEMOGRAPHICS, here's a nice pie chart. It doesn't MEAN anything, but it's nice, dontcha think? :)

-
It is not, however, a chocolate pie. :(
-
A.I. brought me to tears.
HHW has a very intelligent, somewhat eccentric demographic, a very cool group.
I think that everyone on this site would enjoy the new film, Tell No One. I enjoyed it on a flight from London to Los Angeles last summer, so much so that I watched it twice!
-
And the word of the day is: CONTEMN!
Sounds like a chant used by the followers of Fred Phelps:
"On the count of ten
We will CONTEMN!"
What a bunch of maroons, as Bugs is wont to say.
-
I figured out this group's demographic ages ago.
Gay men and religious women.
Well, like any demographic, this oversimplifies somewhat. ::)
-
Yeah. AI is typical Spielberg treacle.
At the end of the film, the kid gets in bed with his dead mother. That is so typical Spielberg treacle.
Personally, I love the film.
-
Everyone's Special: Communities and the Individual in the films of Pixar Animation.
That's the title of my next essay.
No, it really might be.
At least doing the research will be fun.
-
I'd better get to work before I start having too much fun taking things too seriously.
Hasta.
-
I don't know about you, but I still can't get over the fact that Abu Dhabi now owns the Chrysler Building in New York.
Talk about unseemly.

Speaking of Haley Joel Osment (and teh notes were), a little-known fact: Haley Joel Osment and Tom Hulce duetted (sp?) on one of Skip's songs for the Disney video Hunchback of Notre Dame sequel. (Not necessarily a verified fact but very likely true: Haley Joel Osment and Tom Hulce were not there at the same time when they recorded their parts of that duet.)
-
Hmmm....Is it still a duet if they recorded their parts separately?
-
On tv tonight, not much (i don't think) but SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE RESULTS.
Last night, to me CANADIAN IDOL was a disaster. I have no idea why (i'm guessing because they want the show to finish at the end of the summer) but they went from 16 to 10.
It was a nightmare. IMO, one of the best people got sent home. He wasn't my favorite. But if you would have asked me before the show, i would have said he was 100% safe.
There were 2 brothers who were fantastic. But they were on the same night (tuesday). And only 5 were safe, and 3 went from that day.
So of course for drama they leave them to the end with only one brother able to be saved. I'm sure the judges were fuming, I know i was.
There are only 2 girls in the top 10 which is really crazy. But i love them both. And there is one other guy who i love.
One really crazy thing is there is a contestant from newfoundland, who is making it only because that whole province is idol crazy. And they vote for him only. He is the worst by far. And it made me ill that he made it when the brother had to go home!
-
singdaw - Thanks for asking, and I checked about the Summer Shorts 2 tickets. When they're on sale, it'll be at ticketcentral.com - but it looks like Series A (which starts July 31) is on sale already, but Series B (which starts August 6) is not on sale yet.

Good morning, all! I must get to the post office this morning, and that is my only major priority. Then, back to the BABES critical notes for the Appendix.
Yesterday, we finished up all of Volume One of the orchestra score, caught a couple of errors, and it's time to make a final proff of the entire Volume and clean up all of the notes on the editorial work. I think we'll begin that next Monday or so. Thanks to Skip Kennon, Tom Murray, Peter Foley, Curtis Moore, and especially Chris Deschene for the new formats, the score is absolutely beautiful to behold on paper, and I couldn't be luckier to work with such artits.
I guess it's time to make the bed and get to the post office.
TOD: I feel completely unqualified to answer this one. I do look forward to DR MBarnum's choices from what he watches, although I believe Direct To DVD won't count much in the scheme of the cosmos.
-
Hmmm....Is it still a duet if they recorded their parts separately?
It is for the listener!
-
Thanks, DR FJL!! :)
-
Thank you, singdaw, for being interested enough to ask about the tickets!

As for the Chrysler Building... It was mentioned on the news this morning that even though the building proper is now under "foreign control", controlling interest is still held stateside. The land on which the building sits is still owned by Cooper Union.

And, yes, it looks like it's going to be quite a nice day here in NYC. The current temp "in Central Park" is just 72 degrees, and today's high is only supposed to be in the mid-80s. And the humidity has also dropped along with the temps. Nice!

And The Song Of The Day Is: I HATE MEN
-
Well we open tonight, and I made a mistake last night. The cast had a terrible time struggling to make the show work because one actor doesn't know his lines and doesn't follow his blocking, and makes long self indulgent pauses....and starts every line with another character's name because while he tries to remember what he is supposed to say.
SO - after trying to deal with him privately, I felt I had to talk to the group as a group and called him out on his NOT LEARNING HIS LINES the way he promised he would, NOT following the blocking - I told him I was the director and he was to do it the way I told him, not the way he wanted to, that he left too many people standing around waiting for him to talk...they gave him time....but he never picked up the lines.
It was a terrible way to end the rehearsal period, and go into the opening, and now I am sorry I did it....
So there you are. I don't know what will happen. He got up and ran out the back door after the notes....didn't speak to anyone. And I have heard nothing from anyone this morning....although most of us talked briefly before breaking up.....
Terrible situation. Directors, if you think you should can someone during rehearsals - do it. Don't wait....do it. Otherwise these are your shoes, and they are very uncomfortable.
-
And The Song Of The Day Is: I HATE MEN
Perfect....of course not IN GENERAL....but specifically. ;D
-
I always had a strange fascination with HEAVEN'S GATE.Probably one of the most vilified Movies in the hisory of the cinema. I aso love and still love- THE STUNT MAN.
-
So now DR SINGDAW has seen both A RAGE TO LIVE and ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN. I think that is an inspiring a double bill as I have heard of.
I hope he didn't get them mixed up while he was watching them.
And yes my quote is from AOTFFW....poor Nancy.
I am happy that HHW is adding the cultural awareness of its denizens. Where else on all the inner nit?

I'm engaging in a little online retail therapy - does that count?
-
Good morning!
Argh! It cooled down wonderfully last night so I opened everything up, but I forgot to put enough time on the attic fan timer, and at some point during the night it cut off allowing the house to heat back up a bit to uncomfortable levels. I turned it back on when I got up and got the house temperature down a degree or two, but a few minutes ago, I just went downstairs, closed everything up, and turned on the A/C. And it popped right on.
-
I don't know what will happen. He got up and ran out the back door after the notes....didn't speak to anyone.
Have you a game-plan if he doesn't show up tonight?

So, JRand, are you going on tonight?

Most definitely! Shop 'til you drop! And since you are already "down", the drop will be painless :D

Well, I'm one of those idiots who doesn't care for the end of A.I., so there you are.
-
I,also, love the movie JACOB'S LADDER
-
Today I'll be watching COLLEGE ROAD TRIP. There are two audio commentaries and a bunch of other bonus features (though I don't know how long each lasts). The movie is only 83 minutes long, so I'm not sure if I can do it all in one day or not. We'll see.

I one of those few folks who finds more to like than dislike about the movie version of MAN OF LA MANCHA. No, not perfect by a long shot, but it's more faithful to the stage version than something like A CHORUS LINE is, and I can find pleasure watching it.

And, of course, my support and enthusiasm for the huge bombs DOCTOR DOLITTLE and STAR! are well known around here.

As I've been trumpeting all week, tonight is the second season premiere of BURN NOTICE on USA. It comes on at 10 p.m.
FEAR ITSELF is not on tonight (an extended version of LAST COMIC STANDING preempts it).
Tonight's episode of SWINGTOWN introduces the bisexual character into the mix as we find out that Grant Show's character and his wife both sleep with the same man. I'm going to record it just to see how that scenario is treated. I haven't been watching the series otherwise.

Ain't none of us got no chocolate pie! :'(
No, but I DO have brownies!

And I believe MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST is also on tonight, but I'll have to check to make sure. I know after two weeks of the Thursday evening telecast being hounded by audio telecast problems, I will wait and record an early morning rebroadcast.

I have been over the past week's posts by you, and I'm experiencing a "gap", I tell you, a "gap".
After all the wonderful accounts of one-week-ago-today, there's nothing about your full day as a married person in the City of San Francisco (i.e., July 4th) other than a hint that you "might" take in a spa and that the fireworks were a non-event due to fog.
What happened on that wonderful day after? Be honest, now! If you and Jayson simply lolled en suite and ordered room service, I know we would all understand and be envious.
But we want to know!
Respectfully,

Sorry, B.K., but I not only hate the ending of A.I., I HATE the entire movie. Another of Spielberg's self-indulgent, treacly, undisciplined, inflated paeans to boyhood. Worse than HOOK. A load of bollocks!
Personally, I don't think the story would have been any better in Kubrick's hands, whose latter films can't touch his early work like PATHS OF GLORY & SPARTACUS (probably because he had Kirk Douglas to rein in his indulgences).

I was recently asked to name my favourite eighties movies. There were several neglected classics among them:

We who like A.I. are in the minority, there is no doubt about it. Like all films, they speak to who they speak to. But at least Pogue doesn't like any of it - whereas my bafflement comes from people who don't like just the last twenty minutes but like what's preceded it - although, as I said, in the last couple of years some of those folks have come around to it. And I think when the film comes out on Blu-Ray some will watch it again and like it better.

LA TIMES BOOK REVIEW (http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-et-book5-2008jul05,0,3980465.story)
'THE DUMBEST GENERATION' BY MARK BAUERLEIN
How dumb are we? Thanks to the Internet, dumb and dumber, this author writes.
By Lee Drutman
Special to The Times
July 5, 2008
In the four minutes it probably takes to read this review, you will have logged exactly half the time the average 15- to 24-year-old now spends reading each day. That is, if you even bother to finish. If you are perusing this on the Internet, the big block of text below probably seems daunting, maybe even boring. Who has the time? Besides, one of your Facebook friends might have just posted a status update!
Such is the kind of recklessly distracted impatience that makes Mark Bauerlein fear for his country. "As of 2008," the 49-year-old professor of English at Emory University writes in "The Dumbest Generation," "the intellectual future of the United States looks dim."
The way Bauerlein sees it, something new and disastrous has happened to America's youth with the arrival of the instant gratification go-go-go digital age. The result is, essentially, a collective loss of context and history, a neglect of "enduring ideas and conflicts."
Survey after painstakingly recounted survey reveals what most of us already suspect: that America's youth know virtually nothing about history and politics. And no wonder. They have developed a "brazen disregard of books and reading."
…
The problem is that instead of using the Web to learn about the wide world, young people instead mostly use it to gossip about each other and follow pop culture, relentlessly keeping up with the ever-shifting lingua franca of being cool in school. The two most popular websites by far among students are Facebook and MySpace. "Social life is a powerful temptation," Bauerlein explains, "and most teenagers feel the pain of missing out."
…
Bauerlein also frets about the nature of the Internet itself, where people "seek out what they already hope to find, and they want it fast and free, with a minimum of effort." In entering a world where nobody ever has to stick with anything that bores or challenges them, "going online habituates them to juvenile mental habits."
And all this feeds on itself. Increasingly disconnected from the "adult" world of tradition, culture, history, context and the ability to sit down for more than five minutes with a book, today's digital generation is becoming insulated in its own stultifying cocoon of bad spelling, civic illiteracy and endless postings that hopelessly confuse triviality with transcendence.
…
Ain't it the truth!
der Brucer
-
Looks like a nice day out.
-
Of course, there are several films on Pogue's best of 80s list that I don't like at all, so that's what makes horse racing.
-
I guess I'll try to jog this morning - too groggy right now and I don't want to do it too close to my eleven o'clock phoner, so I'd have to do it right at ten or just before - or directly after, depending on how long it takes.
-
I didn't like A.I. but I especially hated the ending. Blu-ray or not, I will never, ever watch that film again. My blood curcles just thinking about the time I squandered on it the first go round. It was one of those times I left the theatre actually angry and furious at a film's rank sentimentality and for the blatant, cheap attempt to manipulate me. I'd say it is one of my most despised films of the last ten years. Did I mention I also found it flatulent?
Okay, BK, turn-abouts fair play. Which ones on my 80's list don't you like? I pretty much knew there would be controversy about it. You'll notice I also don't include the revered Spielberg film E.T. on my favourite 80's. I don't despise E.T. like I do A.I. (what is it with Spielberg and all this initial crap?), but I pretty much find it a sort of "ho-hum, who cares"? Except for occasional snatches playing remote roulette, I've never watched it again since the first go-round. I just don't see childhood with the same rosy mystique and yearning that he does.
-
Interesting demograhics, DR dB! Thanks. :)
-
That's kind of sad, DR Pogue. No one's childhood is ever rosy, and I don't expect Elliott thought his lot in life was rosy, either, what with his folks being divorced and all. I reckon it's more Spielberg's take on "fantasy" that you don't cotton to.
Personally, I found "E.T." a refreshing break from spacy odyssey adventures but with a positive, yes-there-is-life-out-there attitude and a touching story arc about a boy being a boy, at first, taking in a critter, and then learning that his critter is, in fact, sentient, although Elliott would not have known the word.
We all have our limits, though, as to what we'll swallow and what we won't. I've more than made up for your dislike of the film -- and practically anyone else on this forum, even if it's everyone -- in the number of viewings of it I've logged!
:D
-
I hated Flesh + Blood so much, I finally shut it off - but then again, outside of his first couple of Dutch films, I hate Paul Verhoeven's films with a passion - as much loathing as you have for Spielberg and A.I.
Blood Simple - I thought it was okay, but nowhere near as good as Raising Arizona, which I think is the Coen's best film.
Crimes of Passion - Quirky, absolutely. And good performances. But, not a film I ever need to see again.
The two we agree on completely are Body Heat and The Fly.
-
It's not that I dislike E.T., Ron, I just never found it the second coming of Christ like so many others and have never found any compelling reason to re-watch it. I think I even have a copy of the film on tape (my wife's doing, I suspect); but there are so many other things I rather see or rather see again.
Actually, my favourite Spielberg film is CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, but I don't re-watch that either. The ones I usually watch over and over are the thirties and forties ones.
-
But we want to know!
Well, I am having another hellish day at the office. and the forecast for tomorrow is likewise. So what the heck...
I never posted this because I didn't think it was that interesting.
On July 4th, we did indeed splurge on a morning at the spa: manicures, pedicures, and massages all around! :) In the afternoon we ambled in Golden Gate Park and took in the locals and the lovely scenery. In the early evening, we partook of two services in two different synagogues in two different parts of the city, both in architecturally magnificent buildings. We then had dinner in our hotel room and collapsed on the early side, as we had an EARLY departure the following morning.
And that's the whole story! Aren't you sorry you asked? :)
-
Interesting demograhics, DR dB! Thanks. :)
I wonder, though, how much of this falls into the "Chicken Little" syndrome.
Before Facebook and youtube there was the telephone. Not the cell variety, either.
And the telephones were in teen bedrooms and the teens were on them constantly.
I went to school in the 1960s with teens who had their own telephone book listings. You'd look up, oh, say, the name "Adams". I had a cousin named Adams -- Cecil. His wife's name was Jean. Their kids were Johnny and Jerry. You looked up "Adams, Cecil" and there, under his name and indented, were his kid's "Adams, Johnny" and "Adams, Jerry".
These entries were similar to others in the city, including many classmates.
Even "Bye, Bye Birdie" provided us with a more-than-accurate parody of post-school telephoning in the late 1950s in "The Telephone Hour" number.
I know the computer age has taken more kids off the streets (and out of their cars) than was true in previous generations. I now that the MTV mentality has given younger folks shorter attention spans and a great deal of impatience with sentence structure, spelling and writing syle.
On the other hand, they've developed rather sophisticated ways of shorthanding their thoughts and feelings. We don't have to approve, I know. But the future is theirs, not ours.
I would love to see more kids involved in reading programs at younger -- pre-computer-using and cell-phone-using -- ages. I know things look bleak, but I'm hopeful there are compensations that are not being taken into account.

I never gave much thought to that "second coming of Christ" take. It never seemed that way to me, and the one mystical image everyone points to...of E.T. in that robe raising his arms as the vapors from dry ice swirl around him...was very nicely offset when one of the kids asked why E.T. couldn't just beam up to his spaceship. Elliott's comeback: "This is reality, Greg!"
"Starman" more closely paralleled a "second coming" tale since its hero restored life to a deer and impregnated a woman who was medically barren.
But...that's what makes the world go 'round!

I must say, the only Spielberg films I watch with any regularity at all are Duel and Jaws. I hadn't looked at A.I. since getting the DVD back in 2002, and have only watched Close Encounters once in the last ten years or so. Schindler's List was a one time only film, I didn't ever care to see Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report was just odd, Catch Me If You Can had a few moments, 1941 is a big elephant and really unfunny, and I saw ET too many times to watch it again for a long while.
-
Ron, I didn't mean to suggest E.T. was some Christ allegory...only the way that everyone fawned over the movie when it first came out...treating it as if it were the second coming of Christ-- or to put it another way, the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I like Spielberg well enough as a director, some things better than others, but, truth be told, there is not one Spielberg movie that would make my top 100 films.
-
We had the advantage of watching E.T. with our young children, shortly after it was released & before we knew what to expect.
-
I had the advantage of seeing ET at its premiere at the Dome - and knew nothing about it at all, so I loved it because at every step of the way it was a surprising film.
-
And, of course, I AM in it.
-
Back from a jog and I've already shaved so I'm way ahead of the game now. Phoner should come in ten minutes or so.

I, too, love The Boy Friend.

They're tearing up the street in new ways every day, and have done something since I jogged yesterday, so I didn't see the place where they'd smoothed out the pavement to a certain point, and then it went UP about an inch and a half.
-
I managed to barely keep my balance, but I think I pulled a little calf muscle in doing so - but I wouldn't stop and it seems to have worked itself out.
-
But at least Pogue doesn't like any of it - whereas my bafflement comes from people who don't like just the last twenty minutes but like what's preceded it -
I'm baffled that you are baffled by this. ;D This happens rather often, while watching a movie or reading a book. The ending can make or break my reaction to what came before. There are times when I'm on the fence, waiting to see how the story will unravel & where it will take me. A.I. is one that did not take me where I wanted to go.
-
Use caution when jogging.

And eat more then one meal a day.

Glad you didn't fall!

And a little walk with The Beach Boys down memory lane:
Well she got her daddy's car and she cruised through the hamburger stand now.
Seems she forgot all about the library like she told her old man now.
And with the radio blastin' goes cruisin' just as fast as she can now.
And she'll have fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the T-Bird away.
(fun fun fun till her daddy take's the T-Bird Away)
Well we're doin' spin standard because she walks, looks, drives like an ace now.
(You walk like an ace now you walk like an ace)
She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman Chariot race now.
(You look like an ace now you look like an ace)
A lot of guys try to catch her but she leads them on a wild goose chase now.

And she'll have fun fun fun till her daddy takes the T-Bird away

Ron, I didn't mean to suggest E.T. was some Christ allegory...only the way that everyone fawned over the movie when it first came out...treating it as if it were the second coming of Christ-- or to put it another way, the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I like Spielberg well enough as a director, some things better than others, but, truth be told, there is not one Spielberg movie that would make my top 100 films.
I understand this all too well. Overkill ruins many things, just as overplay on the radio kills some songs.
I guess I was lucky enough to have seen "E.T." on the first day of its national release...and before I'd read much about it. I steered clear of reviews until I'd seen films because of USA Today's review of "The Empire Strikes Back" the day BEFORE its national release date. The reviewer didn't warn anyone when he revealed the BIG "reveal" without so much as a blink of his eye. I was flabbergasted that anyone would have violated the trust that Lucas had given them with the advance preview. I don't recall any of the fallout from it, but I know I never read that newspaper again.
-
The only thing that ruins films more than too much press and word-of-mouth (which can be very good for "sleepers", admittedly) is giving away a film's major surprise. It's an unconscionable gaffe, IMO.
And does anyone here besides me think that word-of-mouth oversold "Forrest Gump" to the extent that its Oscars seem silly now?

Amazon.com's "Lightning Deals" today included, at 10 a.m., the "Ford at Fox" box, listed at $299.98. The price: "$129.95 -- a 56% discount off Amazon's normal price of $269.99.
This normally would last till 2 p.m. when the next Lightning Deal is offered.
They're all gone -- 100% claimed. No way of knowing, of course, just how many boxes they were clearing out. But it was one HELL of a deal.
-
No surprise about Passing Strange - the only surprise is that they're filming it for MTV broadcast, so, thanks to that, the producers will at least see some of their dough back.
-
Where do you find lightning deals? I know the Gold Box - is it that?
-
Sherlock helped me today by picking up the dirty clothes off the floor & passing them to me to drop into the washing machine. Now he is exhausted and sleeping.
-
Well, I'm one of those idiots who doesn't care for the end of A.I., so there you are.
I went back and read my notes, which were written very late, but am happy to see I did not use the word "idiots."
I did, however, use the word "stupidity" when referring to people's misunderstanding the last act of the film, and I was wrong to do so - it's all just opinions - and I've rewritten that section of the notes.
-
I found where you find lightning deals.
-
Topic of the Day: the first movie that I can think of is "Xanadu," but we all know how that turned out, many years later.
;D
-
I think that Duel and Star Wars may be the only Speilberg movies I have ever seen.
Speilberg had nothing to do with "Star Wars." That was George Lucas. :)
-
Where do you find lightning deals? I know the Gold Box - is it that?
I've never even heard of lightning deals at Amazon.
-
I ain't got no HDNet.
I didn't know we have it until a few minutes ago. Just for fun, I set ET to record.
-
Well, I don't have time to look for these "lightning deal," my sister and niece are on a schedule and I'm part of it. I need to go over there to help move their treadmill out of the way so that they can blow up a blow-uppable bed...an inflatable bed. I haven't even taken a shower yet (I took today and tomorrow off from work) but I need to leave NOW and move a treadmill. Then, I'll come back home and take a shower.
-
My cousin and his wife are supposed to be arriving this evening from Oregon, where they live and they're staying with my sister and niece. So, I'm off!
Have a good day, all. ;D
-
Have a nice visit with your cousins, and don't hurt yourself moving the treadmill.
-
Speilberg had nothing to do with "Star Wars." That was George Lucas. :)
OH, then I guess I have only seen one Speilberg movie and one George Lucas movie.
Wait...add a few more Lucas movies as I did see most of the Star Wars sequels/prequels....I just wish I hadn't seen them.
-
...on the other hand, I have seen quite a few Homi Wadia films.
-
Ron, unfortunately, when you live in Hollywood, you hear all the hype about movies...months before they're ever started, let alone released...Also I had a neighbour who was a mime who was working on it, doing E.T. hand stuff, etc. so...I was also in London during its release, shooting my first two movies, so by the time I got back to the states, the thing had already been out for months, so there were no surprises for me at all.
But now that BK says he's in it (where, BK) I may have to watch it again.
-
Truth is...I've never been much of one for movies about kids or starring kids, even when I was a kid I didn't much care for them.
-
TOD:
I think THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T was panned when it was released, and now it is considered a cult classic and still screens from time to time.
DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (a film I edited) was panned by tons of critics when it was released in 1991, and in 2004 it was chosen for preservation by the National Film Registry.
-
I'm the reason ET figures out to phone home. They purchased a real phone company commericial, in which I appear with Mallory Sandler. I'm in the commercial a lot, but in ET only for a small moment.

Pogue's list started me thinking about my favorite '80's films. Some of my faves, though not necessarily my top 10:

AMADEUS
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
SPINAL TAP
WITHNAIL AND I
REAL GENIUS
PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE
SAY ANYTHING
FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF

Dast I admit that I have never seen the movie E.T.?
(There are some truths best kept to oneself - I, for example, have never watched Citizen Kane, but would not let that news go public).

A long lasting lunch (where folks were discussing some family troubles) and some telephone calls made me able to watch far fewe things this afternoon than I had planned.
-
Where do you find lightning deals? I know the Gold Box - is it that?
No...when you open the Gold Box, that deal is on the left of the screen. The lightning deals are to the right...and one is announced at 6 a.m, one at 10 a.m., one at 2 p.m., one at 6 p.m.
DR BK: I saw you found it.
DR George: I leave the above in place, though stricken through, just in case you find the time to look.

Well, for those who have not seen E.T. or CITIZEN KANE, it has to be because you have no interest in them. They've certainly been available for rent or purchase for a long time.
At least you know they're there if you DO get curious.
-
I have nothing to say about todays' TOD.
-
I spent most of the afternoon I had available with COLLEGE ROAD TRIP. Yes, it's a typical Disney family comedy with a slapstick wedding disrupted (a chocolate fountain spewed all over the father of the bride, etc.), everyone making faces at the camera and shouting their lines, and always, always the heart-to-heart sentimental ending followed by a last BIG slapstick moment.
I might have laughed twice during its 83 minutes.
-
There are many films I'd love to see that I haven't, as yet, seen.
I've bought a number of them in hopes of one day being able to watch them.

Is that your final word on it?

In today's mail was a letter from the cable company informing us that our basic television cable (which was part of a bundle with the internet cable) will be increased to $25 per month (up from $10). I think I have an errand to run.

Then I watched all of the bonus features: a video diary by co-star Raven, deleted scenes, alternate opening and endings, the gag reel, music video and the making of the music video.
There are two audio commentaries available which I'll get to this evening.

There are many films I'd love to see that I haven't, as yet, seen.
I've bought a number of them in hopes of one day being able to watch them.
I buy a fair number of DVDs "blind" though there is always some reason for buying them: either I love the stars, the director, the genre (musical or mystery), or know the film's reputation and need to see it and have it for the collection.
Finding the time to watch these movies poses a different kind of problem.
-
Was it "so Raven"?

Same girl, not so Raven, however. Kind of lame actually.

This news will surely bring Pogue a welcome sense of anticipation:
MOVIE NEWS (http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Movie-News/Movie-Casting-News/800042623)
MEET THE NEW SHERLOCK AND WATSON: BARON COHEN AND FERRELL
It may be a stretch to picture the man who donned a neon man-kini as the dapper Sherlock Holmes, but Sacha Baron Cohen is nothing if not malleable in his roles. The brain behind Borat is set to play the fictional crime-solving legend, and is teaming up with Will Ferrell as his partner, Watson.
Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller — the same team that first paired the actors in Talladega Nights — will be producing the comedy.
Gives a new meaning to "aweful dread".

Good Evening!
When I headed out earlier, I ended up heading over to a friend's house for a brief visit and to drop off a DVD he had asked about. He and his partner and their son are going on the Rosie Cruise next week, so it was good chance to see him before he hits the high seas.
Since he lives right of Central Park West, I just decided to head into the park. I took a nice walk around the North Meadow, along the east side of the Reservoir, and ended up walking all the way down to the Boathouse and Bethesda Terrace/Fountain. It really was/is a gorgeous afternoon. I had brought a blanket with me, so I sat down for a bit and did some reading... and napping. :)

Actually, I'm the only vegetarian in the family. DS Gabe is something of a chickenphile (that's a word, I'm sure of it), and on this trip he also got "real" bacon for the first time, which he loved. :)
He told me the shark was only about as big as his arm, which still didn't allay my panic.
-
In other breaking news, DS Betsy just sent me a bunch o'pics from a little town known as Studio City, CA, or something like that--Ed Begley, Jr. and Bill Nye the Science Guy were parading around Begley's newly installed solar panels and home composting unit (which produces energy from methane). Could these be BK's new neighbors, per chance? :)
-
Once I got home, I threw my dinner together. I cubed a piece of halibut, then put the cubes in a small baking dish. Threw in a few grape tomatoes. Drizzled everything with some olive oil, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and a squeeze of lemon juice. 10 minutes in a 400 degree oven, and... YUM!
-
DR JMK - Has Gabe seen "Jaws"?

That $10 was the basic cable part of the bundle, which got us the standard network stuff, a few Spanish channels, and a Discovery channel. Nothing else.

No surprise about Passing Strange - the only surprise is that they're filming it for MTV broadcast, so, thanks to that, the producers will at least see some of their dough back.
It has yet to be determined where and how Spike Lee will show his film of Passing Strange. It could hit the cable TV circuit - most likely HBO, Showtime, etc. - or it could also go the movie theatre route.
I'm just wondering if Spike Lee will be able to tape the show two additional times without an audience - as has been reported - between now and when the show closes.
-
"Somebody", in a previous incarnation, opined, in print:
Return To Oz was one of the most critically lambasted movies in recent memory. In addition, audiences stayed away in droves. ... This is all very unfortunate because Return To Oz is a mostly wonderful picture - well directed...beautifully photographed...and unforgettably scored....hopefully someday people will discover the movie, and enjoy it for the fine film that it is.

DR MattH - I noticed the same issue with the cable system up here. It looks like the cable guide descriptions have been a week ahead or behind. Tonight's episode is currently titled, "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" - which was last weeks' episode. However, last week, our cable guide said it was supposed to be "Otters, Cubs and Bears.. Oh My" (or something like that). And it was a week ahead the previous week too. I have a feeling someone switched something along the way. We shall see.

Guess I'd better line up my understudy for the July edition of Grantseeking Basics - it's scheduled for the evening of the 22nd.

Maybe that writer doesn't have issues with errors in other folks' internet comments. Maybe he's sometimes just "giving back" to an occasional writer who seems to thrive on correcting others for spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes but often makes uncorrected mistakes of his own! ;)

Sweet Auburn Bread Co.'s Sweet Potato Cheesecake 12 servings
Hands on: 30 minutes
Total time: 5 hours (includes cooling and chilling)
Sonya Jones, a member of our Saving Southern Food chefs panel and chef-owner of Sweet Auburn Bread Co. (see accessAtlanta.com for more about this bakery), shared with us the recipe that then-President Bill Clinton raved about during a visit to Atlanta in 1999. Or, we should say, one version of it; Jones admits to changing the recipe now and then. This one is baked in a springform pan to make it easier to remove, even though Jones uses regular cake pans. Take your pick.
6 or 7 slices of poundcake, 1/4 inch thick
2 (8-ounce packages) cream cheese
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup cooked and pureed sweet potato
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Stir in the vanilla. Pour batter into cake-lined pan.
Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until center is almost set. Remove from oven and cool for about 45 minutes. When cool, remove from pan and refrigerate at least 3 hours before serving.

Mockingbird Bakery's Sweet Tea Pie With Lemon
8-10 servings
Hands on: 25 minutes
Total time: 1 hour, 15 minutes, plus several hours to cool
What could be more Southern than a chess pie made with tea? The top of the pie will darken during baking; don't be alarmed. Pat the dough in evenly and in a thin layer for more even browning, building up a top crust to hold the filling and discarding excess. Don't overfill the pie, and if in doubt, place a tray underneath it during baking to catch any spills.
For the crust:
3 ounces cream cheese
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
For the filling:
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
Zest of 1 lemon
8 egg yolks
3/4 cup warm, strong orange pekoe tea (standard tea bags)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cornmeal
To prepare the crust: With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and butter until well-combined. Add flour and mix at low speed until dough forms a ball. Pat dough evenly and thinly into a 9-inch pie pan, building up a thicker top edge. Place pie shell in freezer while preparing filling.
To prepare the filling: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
With an electric mixer, beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar. Add lemon zest and egg yolks a little at a time, allowing each addition to incorporate, scraping the bowl often. Slowly add the tea, vanilla, vinegar and lemon juice. Add flour and cornmeal. Don't be alarmed if the mixture looks slightly curdled. Scrape the bowl and mix to combine.
Remove crust from the freezer and fill. Bake for 50 minutes, or until just a quarter-size area in the center jiggles slightly. Cool on a wire rack. Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
Per serving (based on 8): 682 calories (percent of calories from fat, 57), 6 grams protein, 68 grams carbohydrates, 1 gram fiber, 44 grams fat (25 grams saturated), 317 milligrams cholesterol, 275 milligrams sodium.

When we lived in Pennsylvania Bryan had one Jewish friend & Craig had two. A good majority of their friends belonged to the local Catholic Church. If they spent Saturday night sleeping over at their friend’s they often went to Sunday school with them the following morning. Craig seemed to go far more than Bryan. We had many a discussion with the boys regarding our belief’s vs what they were learning. Eventually the church sent out notices to all the parents requesting they limit the number of guests. I always suspected it was due to my boys showing up so often. ;D

I think it's rather broad-minded of me not to force my dietary choices on my kids. :)
It sure is. We forced ours on our children.

And that's my stupidity showing because if I've ever read Huxley's answer to the question, i've long forgotten it.
YAHOO ANSWERS (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060821115124AAsrMPO)
• Lewis Carroll himself got bugged about this so much that he was moved to write the following in the preface to the 1896 edition of his book:
Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: `Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all.
Did this discourage people? No. They figured, that dope Carroll, he's too dumb to figure out his own riddle, setting aside the halfhearted attempt just quoted. So they ventured answers of their own, some of the more notable of which are recorded in Martin Gardner's The Annotated Alice and More Annotated Alice:
Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes. (Puzzle maven Sam Loyd, 1914)
Because Poe wrote on both. (Loyd again)
Because there is a B in both and an N in neither. (Get it? Aldous Huxley, 1928)
Because it slopes with a flap. (Cyril Pearson, undated)
Not bad for amateurs. But the real answer, to which the careers of Poe and Carroll bear ample testimony, is that you can baffle the billions with both.

I heard that over and over, however, the previews didn't grab me. We watched it recently and also found it to be sweet & quirky :)

I think Lewis Carroll's answer was "Because it slopes with a flap", but I may be mistaken.

I think I read these answers in "The Annotated Alice", very fun to read if you like "Alice".

Hmm... And to confuse things even more, I just checked TVGuide.com. It has the NEW episode at 9:00pm - "Otters, Cubs and Bears... Oh My!", and "Speak Now..." at 10:00pm. But aren't the new eps on at 10:00pm?
I peeped in at about 9:30, and it was last week's episode. I peeped in during one of the commercials of BURN NOTICE around 10:20, and I didn't recognize what I was seeing, so I'm assuming the 10 p.m. was the new episode (as it should have been). I set the DVR to pick up the 10 p.m. episode during its early morning rerun 3 a.m., I think.
-
I listened to parts of both commentaries attached to COLLEGE ROAD TRIP. Didn't take long at all with the writers' track: they didn't say anything. Honestly, what a waste of disc space. They snickered a couple of times and would occasionally make a droming comment about someone or simply say, "Oh, there's Will. He's so funny."
The director and star commentary was very lively and despite Raven giggling through a lot of it, it had some information about making the film, the retakes, etc. I listened to more than an hour of it.
-
Next, I watched the two-part episode on THE CLOSER set that had Brenda (and others) in court trying to put an opthamologist away. Very complicated case, and it looked for awhile like Brenda and the squad were going down in defeat.
Loved Fredric Lane's guest appearance. I've always loved him.
-
Next, I watched another episode of BURN NOTICE from the season one set. Fun as always.
-
And then I watched the season premiere of the show on USA. Just as cool and hip as it was last season. I hope Michael and Fi DO simply work together and don't bog things down with a renewed romance. The sexual tension thing always works better ( as in BONES) than when they give in to temptation.

Back to BURN NOTICE for a second.
spoiler space
USA TODAY's critic didn't at all like the new season-long twist of Michael working for Carla, allegedly the person responsible for burning him. That didn't bother me at all.
My only complaint about the episode is the continuing, unnecessary presence of Sharon Gless as his annoying mother. I know her "problems" are there for comedy relief, but unless she's going to actively help in some way to assist in cases (even if it's to take in people in hiding like last season or bring someone who needed help to Michael's attention), I just find her presence irritating and not useful. (As useless as Lesley Ann Warren was when I was watching IN PLAIN SIGHT.) I love these actresses, but their roles in the shows are really disposable.

Now, I'm going to head downstairs and go to bed. I have another review box set to start on tomorrow (and FOUR Criterions are in the mail to me), so I need to get a good night's sleep to be ready for this stuff.
Good night.

Listening to iPod and relaxing before writing the notes. I was going to attempt attending the Hollywood Collector's Show tomorrow but just noticed it doesn't start till eleven - I have to be at rehearsal at noon, so that won't work. If we break by four I may try to go there for a couple of hours, otherwise it will be Saturday.
-
Welcome nine GUESTS.
-
Have a nice visit with your cousins, and don't hurt yourself moving the treadmill.
Thanks! We had a great time and the treadmill was very easy. It was already folded up. I just needed to move it over a couple of feet...even though it has wheels, both my sister and niece are fairly small people.
I'm home, now. :)
-
We were at my sister's house and my cousin John and his wife Angel got to town about 5:00 pm or so. We were playing cards (Phase 10) when they first got there. We paused the game and had dinner. My sister made vegetarian chili and corn bread muffins for the main meal, then we had homemade vegan chocolate cupcakes for dessert. It actually was very good. :)
-
We continued playing Phase 10 (the whole game took about 3 hours) and talked and played more Phase 10 and talked more and all just had a great time. Tomorrow, we're all meeting at my parents' house and we'll do more visiting and probably play Sorry or Aggravation and then we'll go to Applebee's for dinner. A good time will be had by all. ;D
-
After we said our goodbyes, I came home and watched "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List." I love this show! Kathy is so much fun. :D
-
No...when you open the Gold Box, that deal is on the left of the screen. The lightning deals are to the right...and one is announced at 6 a.m, one at 10 a.m., one at 2 p.m., one at 6 p.m.
DR BK: I saw you found it.
DR George: I leave the above in place, though stricken through, just in case you find the time to look.
Thanks...I don't think I would've found it very quickly.
-
Well, I don't have time to look for these "lightning deal," my sister and niece are on a schedule and I'm part of it.
Are your relatives munitions experts, DR George????? Would it not be easier just to stick a pin in the mattress to let the air out? Must it be blown up?
;)
No, my sister has to make things difficult.
;D

BTW, I checked about MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. The cable guide said tonight's was a new episode, but the description was of last week's episode. So, I don't know what's going on there.
Here, the descriptions of the two episodes were switched. Last week's episode had this week's description and vice versa...or verse vica.
