Well, you've read the notes, the notes had runny icing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - someone left them out in the rain.

And the word of the day is: PROPOUND!

Or in my case - ANTIPOUND.

It has yet to be determined where and how Spike Lee will show his film of Passing Strange. It could hit the cable TV circuit - most likely HBO, Showtime, etc. - or it could also go the movie theatre route.
I'm just wondering if Spike Lee will be able to tape the show two additional times without an audience - as has been reported - between now and when the show closes.
As ambivalent as I was about the CD, I am really looking forward to the filmed version. Having a chance to see everything in context makes it a lot easier to understand what's going on. And I just love theater...even though a DVD isn't the same as actually "seeing it live," it's a good enough approximation for me. :)
-
And now, since I can barely keep my eyes open, I am going to sleep. I only got caught up to page 8 or 9 yesterday, it won't do me any good to try and read it now.
So, good night, all!

Now playing on my iPod, The Carpenters singing I Just Fall In Love Again - rather Miss Karen Carpenter singing - I sometimes forget just how much I love this woman's voice and how she is a great interpreter of song. What a shame she could not defeat her problems - oh, the music she could have made.

Five years ago, Jay-Z performed on a track called “Beware of the Boys,” a remix to the bhangra song ”Mundian To Bach Ke,” by the hugely popular Indian artist Punjabi MC. Although this type of fusion between rap/hip-hop beats and traditional Indian folk-dance music had been around at least 5 years prior to that song, and gaining steam in the dance clubs of London and NYC, it didn’t really make that huge a dent elsewhere.
But don’t be mistaken, bhangra is alive and well. Especially to fans of Bollywood films. Friday night, the Blue13 Dance Company will offer free bhangra dance lessons at downtown’s Music Center, followed by a bhangra-DJ dance party.

No DVD pklans for the weekend as I watch one last night. It was a film called The Man From Earth and it was the last screenplay by Sci Fi writer Jerome Bixby (He of Star Trek [OS] and the original Twilight Zone)
It is about John Oldman a university professor who claims to be 14,000 years old. He is moving on as he does every ten years when people start to realize he doesn't age.
Basically a one set, eight character film with some "philosophical meditation" about life and religion. With an interesting plot turn and an interesting reveal (not really a twist). It is a lot of talk talk talk.
A cerebal science fiction film without special effects, bombastic music scores and not one CGI shot in the entire film.
I do recommend it. I had never heard of the film and the plot description intrigued me. I rented it from NETFLIX.

Good morning, all! I have a long overdue visit this morning to my barber, and short stop at the 42nd Street NYPL, then a trip to the Lincoln Center NYPL, where I will make another try for the long lost BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbok, and then back here to finish up (hopefully) the notes to the Appendix of the critical edition.
Last night I rewatched SAVED, which I've been wanting to see again since seeing the musical version. I thought the film's ending was far superior in its tension and mood, but I found the musical to have some wonderful moments.
DR edisaurus, Martin Gardner's ANNOTATED ALICE was one of my favorite reads during college, and I must have read it many times. I've got the the latest two editions, but I've only skimmed them. I recently made a list of the ANNOTATED books in the sseries I don't have; I think there are four.
DR FJL, follow the email instructions ASAP. Thank you.

Rosalind Russell is the Star of the Month on TCM, and I am enjoying watching some of her early films, early in the morning. I like her best in comedy, but she could do a drama as well....
And I will ALWAYS remember her response in MY SISTER EILEEN, when she finally got a date and her sister was ironing her skirt and asked: "Which way should I turn the pleats?
Russell took a perfect pause, rolled her eyes, and said: "Toward Mecca."

I am thankful for all of the OPENING NIGHT vibes from everyone here at HHW...they indeed did the trick. Mr Talk Slow actually knew MOST of his lines, still talked a bit slow in spots, but he was much improved.
He wouldn't talk to anyone before the show, ME included, barely joined the circle at Half Hour, and then after the show when I talked to him, he said: "I told you I would get, I don't know why you were worried." And I guess he really doesn't.

Hmm... I haven't been listening to all that much music this past week - except for the classical music I happen to catch on WQXR.
I finished listening to the audiobook version of "The Soloist", and I have started listening to "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz - which won the Pulitzer Prize this past year. It's a very interesting listen, however, I'm thinking it would be better as an actual "read". *And there are a few passages in the "The Soloist" that I would like to go back to and read again too.

Tonight on TV on CBS is the debut of a Canadian police procedural FIREPOINT (is that the name? It doesn't look right) which has not gotten great reviews. It does star a favorite actor Enrico Colantoni (who played Veronica's dad on VERONICA MARS), but I doubt I'll bother to record it. With PSYCH starting up next week in that time slot, I know what I'll be watching, and I don't need to start filling up my viewing queue when I have so much stuff waiting to be reviewed.

I think it's FLASHPOINT.
I had no idea it was a canadian series, until i read the write-up in today's paper. Apparently CTV (here) was planning on showing it and CBS decided to buy it because they needed some summer shows.
I would only watch it for the same reason as you. Veronica Mars' daddy!
I watched a longish promo for it this morning. And it does not really look like my cup of tea. It's about hostage situations and the special police task force.
I'm undecided so far. But i do love Enrico! I wonder if he is the lead guy.

For anyone who read this obit in the NY Times, it was written about my partner Peter's father-in-law. (Last time we saw Mr. Marcus was when we were in NY in Jan.) As a preservationist, I think he did a lot to help make NY a great place:
Norman Marcus, New York City Zoning Expert, Dies at 75
By DENNIS HEVESI
Published: July 7, 2008
Norman Marcus, who as general counsel to the New York City Planning Commissionion Commission 20 years drafted much of the intricate legal language intended to preserve the historic character of many of the city’s neighborhoods while still allowing new construction, died on June 30 at his home in Manhattan. He was 75.
The cause was cancer, his son-in-law Peter Miller said.
Mr. Marcus was a master of the labyrinthine codes and designations — the R8s and C7s — that list the rules on square footage, height, air rights, parking requirements, types of businesses and even exposure to sunlight that govern construction in a given area.
“He was my strong right arm in difficult days,” said John E. Zuccotti, the chairman of the planning commission from 1973 through 1975 and one of five chairmen Mr. Marcus advised in his 22-year career, starting in 1963.
Mr. Zuccotti was referring to a particular challenge he faced in his first year as chairman, a proposal by a City Charter commission to eliminate the City Planning Department. The department is the agency that carries out Planning Commission policy.
With Mr. Marcus’s help, Mr. Zuccotti said, “we were able to make them recognize the importance of planning and turn it around.”
Mr. Marcus was also “the spark plug behind many of the special districts that were created,” Mr. Zuccotti said. For example, he led the legal team that established the Midtown Manhattan district, in which air rights above Broadway theaters could be transferred to nearby development sites, thereby preserving the historic architecture of the theaters.
It was a concept that Mr. Marcus first promoted in 1968 when the Penn Central Railroad, which then owned Grand Central Terminal, struck a deal with a developer to build a 55-story office tower above the station, which had landmark status.
Working with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, Mr. Marcus and his legal team developed the plan for transferring the air rights above Grand Central to nearby locations. Penn Central challenged the idea through the courts and, in 1978, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the transfer was not illegal.
Mr. Marcus was also an architect of inclusionary zoning, which offers tax breaks to developers of luxury housing if they set aside a portion of their building — usually 20 percent — for low- or middle-income tenants. Inclusionary zoning started in Manhattan in the 1970s and now helps promote mixed-income neighborhoods in many sections of the city.
“He was part of the team that came up with the idea, and he certainly was the man who translated the idea into the legislation,” Mr. Zuccotti said.
Among Mr. Marcus’s other accomplishments was drafting the so-called loft law, which legalized artists’ occupation of loft spaces in what had once been mostly manufacturing districts.
Born in the Bronx on Aug. 31, 1932, Mr. Marcus was the only child of David and Evelyn Freed Marcus. He graduated from Columbia in 1953 and received a law degree from Yale four years later. While at Yale, he met Maria Lenhoff, whom he married in 1956. Ms. Marcus is now the Joseph M. McLaughlin professor of law at Fordham University.
Besides his wife, Mr. Marcus is survived by two daughters, Valerie and Nicole Marcus, both of Manhattan; a son, Eric, of Auburn, Ala.; and four grandchildren.
After leaving the Planning Commission in 1985, Mr. Marcus went into private practice while also teaching zoning law at New York University, the Cardozo School of Law, Pratt Institute and the architecture school at Princeton.
Two years ago, the Municipal Art Society of New York, an organization that promotes excellence in urban design and planning, cited Mr. Marcus for his “illustrious career using the art and craft of land-use law to shape a better New York.”
From his earliest days in public life, Mr. Marcus had been an ardent advocate of neighborhood preservation. In 1964, when New York City’s Board of Standards and Appeals granted the utility Consolidated Edison a zoning variance to build a power substation in a residential area of Upper Manhattan, Mr. Marcus called it “a classic example of the chaos which ensues when carefully considered legislation on zoning and urban renewal is ignored.”

Yes, thank you, DR Jennifer. FLASHPOINT is the name.
I believe Enrico Colantoni is the star of the show; he leads the unit, but it's supposedly very derivative of many other police procedurals. Maybe I will record the first episode, but I'd be very surprised if I get involved in the show. Enrico is a strong lure for me, however.

I think for the first time this season i did not agree with the viewers version of the bottom 3. I love will. And thought will and jessica's contemporary number the day before was the best performance of the night. Although i'll agree that the other number was not too good.
I don't really get why they all love gev and courtney. I think he is okay. But he is my least favorite of all the guys. And she is my least favorite of all the girls. I also did not agree with twitch and kherington in the B3. I love them.
But i will say it was a no brainer as to who would leave. obviously there was no way will was leaving. And no way twitch was leaving. And i don't really see what they saw in thayne. and to me comfort's time had come. I could not believe they were thinking of ditching jessica. She had had some weak performances in the past. But lately i've found her to be quite good.
My favs are joshua and katee. But i like will, i like kherington and twitch and i like chelsie and mark.
I think it will totally change things next week when the couples split up. I really think the pairings helped a lot of folks out. But to me i cannot see them getting rid of joshua, will, twitch or mark. So gev would have to go. And i cannot see them getting rid of kherington or chelsie. So it would have to be courtney or more likely jessica unless she rocks next week.

His POOR castmates! That's whom I feel for! I am SO glad not to be in such a situation. Can you imagine doing a two person show like I DO! I DO! with such an actor? Oy! (You had a similar experience with THE SUNSHINE BOYS, if I recall correctly.)

Yes, thank you, DR Jennifer. FLASHPOINT is the name.

Me too. I love that guy!
I think it's on again on sunday. or maybe they are repeating tonight's show.
The only reason i know the name is because a lot of shows (like so you think you can dance...) air here on CTV. So i've seen a ton of promos for it.
I don't really watch many police dramas. i'm sort of 50-50 on whether to record this one.
The promos here really showed a lot. I know it's about a tactical force on the toronto police department.
The promo i saw though actually showed a hostage situation with a policeman
sharpshooter (or what do you call it when a policeman is located on the building with a gun aimed at the criminal?). Anyhow someone (maybe the woman he's holding's boyfriend) runs into the scene. And maybe gets in the way. That part seemed sort of interesting.
-
I may take some time out tonight and watch the Blu-ray of BATMAN BEGINS which I received yesterday. I really love the movie and am anxious to see it in high def splendor. Those black levels should be something to see, and the new DOlby TrueHD audio track should also be thrilling.

You guys are making me jealous talking about Kathy Griffin's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Oh well, at least hopefully it will start here next month like they said it would.
Btw, she will be performing at the Just for laugh's gala here next week. They have some very interesting people hosting this year. Her, joan rivers, craig ferguson, jimmy fallon. And a couple of others.

Or even non-residents.... ;D
I was hoping that, too! I found it very interesting...

Continued show vibes, JRand57!

We watched the final episode from last season’s BURN NOTICE and then watched the season premier. It was so nice to have the show back.
SPOILERS, & POSSIBLE SPOILERS;
I think Michael & Fi work great together, and in their case prefer them as a couple without the sexual tension.
In the beginning I agreed with your reaction to Michael’s mother, now her character is growing on me. To me, moments with her are no longer just for comic relief.
It seems a bit early for the critics to complain about Michael working for Carla, it seems to be keeping with his drive to find answers. The way he was looking at Carla I hope that doesn’t turn into something else.

Sorry that was so long, but I thought the NYers might find it onteresting...

Just got the MAMMA MIA soundtrack and it is a LOT OF FUN. Very heavy on the synth sound and drums, I hoped for BIG orchestrations, but it's a choice I guess....but I enjoyed it very much.
Meryl Streep shines in all of her numbers (if a bit flat now and then), Money Money Money and Mamma Mia are especially great, but my favorite Streep track is Super Trooper; Amanda Seyfried in Honey Honey is good; sexiest track Dominic Cooper's Lay All Your Love on Me; Tie for BEST TRACK on the CD: Christine Baranski's Does Your Mother Know and Julie Walters' Take a Chance on Me.
I WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!

LOL DR JANE.....that is my thought as well.

Yes. But that's too hard to illustrate. :)

Sorry I can't agree with you, DR Jane, on Sharon Gless. She's doing the same droopy stuff that annoying the poop out of me last year (complaining about a coffee pot? PLEASE!) Love the actress, but the writers aren't giving her anything of interest for me, at least not yet. But she's a regular, so that means there's no getting rid of her this season at least. Maybe they'll figure out a way to be more than an interruption to the action.

Friday morning greetings! Richard is painting another section of our porch railing and I'm waiting for a call back from our HR person at work. My medical leave requires that I "report in" every 30 days and I need to see what needs to be done if an extension is required.
TOD:
DVD - I watched both my Netflix yesterday - Juno and a recap of U. S. National Figure Skating Championships.
CD - While doing cross-stitch, I'm listening to an audiobook, Maeve Binchy's Scarlet Feather read by Barbara Caruso. Later today, Richard has to go to Staples to do some extensive photocopying, so he's going to leave me at Target. I plan to buy the Mamma Mia soundtrack in addition to some more mundane things, like Band-Aids.

BTW, Encanto is Number 1 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts, as it should be. :)

It simply boggles the imagination, it does. And when you get around to watching BOTH, and commenting on comparisons, differences, etc., I'm sure my curiousity will be sated. Whether it will lead me down that merry path toward Bollywood remains to be seen.
-
I am likely going to be scarce today. Too much darn stuff going on at work. Pesky customers! ;)
A scarce singdaw? The mind boggles.
Oh! Yes! It boggles!
I can't tell you how much boggling but it boggles nonetheless!
-
For DR MBARNUM and anyone who would like to see the Bollywood number performed on this week's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
I think katee and joshua are my favorite couple:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilHBGLNsfvE
Wow, thanks for posting that Jennifer...that couple did fantastic! I cannot imagine trying to learn those moves...and the energy needed...holy cow!
Now you can see what I love so much about those Bollywood dance numbers!
-
Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day? I, for example, am up.

Hmmm....well maybe I do need to watch them, both. Perhaps one day.

I got that idea from you, actually, as your post yesterday indicated:
I have seen neither version myself, but some day I may make a double feature out of them.
:D

That dance was BREATH TAKING!!! And I love that wasn't it from Om Shanti Om?
-
...he said: "I told you I would get, I don't know why you were worried." And I guess he really doesn't.
DR JRand, I'm glad he "got it," but sorry for you and the other actors and crew that he doesn't realize how unfair and inconsiderate his MO is to everyone else.
-
I didn't see the answer....did I guess the next Limited Release from Kritzerland Records correctly?
-
DR JRand, I'm glad he "got it," but sorry for you and the other actors and crew that he doesn't realize how unfair and inconsiderate his MO is to everyone else.
There are so many "actors" like that DR GINNY.....yes consideration for the others is a very low priority for them.
DR JMK - my latest recording is number one on Billboard's Bald Men from Northern Mooresville Indiana Who Own PT Cruisers List. ;D
-
I have got to do some serious reorganizing at home.
Just two months ago, I was all caught up organizing/reorganizing my CDs and DVDs, and I had made major strides toward clearing out stuff I no longer needed/wanted.
And I truly don't know HOW it all accumulates so quickly, but I have a mountain of DVDs and a molehill of CDs and they all have to be watched/listened to and then put away properly.
SIGH!
SIGH!
S I G H!

How quickly I forget, DR Ron Pulliam.
-
Well.....I just read that Loni Anderson has married Bob Flick one of the founding members of the folk group The Brothers Four...I can't understand why it doesn't generate the publicity that the Jolie-Pitt coupling does.
-
Listening to more Meryl Streep....couldn't they fix those notes in the mixing stage?
-
I didn't see the answer....did I guess the next Limited Release from Kritzerland Records correctly?
I did not say, oh, no, I did not say at this time. But, occasionally silence speaks volumes.

I wonder if that actor had these thoughts running through his mind as he ran out of the final rehearsal?
(ACTOR)
God, I hope I get it.
I hope I get it.
How many times have I been told?
[CHORUS]
How many times have you been told?
[ACTOR]
God, I hope I get it.
I hope I get it.
How many lines, how many words?
[CHORUS]
How many lines, how many...?
[ACTOR]
What about the people!
About the people.
How many people will there be?
How many lines, how many words?
How many times will I be...?
I really need this role.
Please God, I need this role.
I've got to keep this role.

Karen's recording of "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" is my favorite.
der Brucer
My sister had a couple of The Carpenters' albums and their version of this song was the very first version that I'd ever heard...now, I have quite a few versions. :D

Dakota, even though I really don't like coffee, I LOVE Coffee Crisp!
(http://www.hometownfavorites.com/images/HFCA338.JPG)
When I was going to Western Washington University in Bellingham (which is close to the US/Canadian border), the school store would sell Coffee Crisp from Canada...they were not otherwise available in the US. I would buy several before I came home to visit and share with friends and family down here in Olympia. They had never heard of it, but liked them, too. :)
And I've posted about this before, but won a portable CD player from U-No!
(http://www.hometownfavorites.com/images/HFCA173.JPG)
I bought one from the vending machine where I work and when I opened the wrapper it had the notice of "Winner" on the inside of the label! I already had a portable CD player (with more options, actually), so I gave the new CD player to my dad. :)
-
Larry - will do it by Monday or else over the weekend; I'm figuratively chained to the homestead computer today
No problem, dear friend!

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!!!
A "Good Times"/Esther Rolle reference.
-
A "Good Times"/Esther Rolle reference.
The first movie I worked on, right out of college, (SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER) starred Esther Rolle. We all really liked her!
My favorite Esther Rolle line from the movie:
Kristy MacNichol: "Ruth, why are you always such a smiling' person?"
Esther Rolle: "I likes to keep my jubilee in easy reach."
This became a catch phrase around our house. My GaGa adopted it, and now it's hard to remember the original source, I heard her say it so many times!
And she most certainly did!
-
aren't the hounds of hell nipping at your behind right now with more work/work/work?
Yes.
This is my mini-"sanity" break.
Scary, huh? :)
-
Today's 10 a.m. lightning deal was sold out well before the first half hour!
It was volume 1 of a Woody Allen set of his early films....the discount was 60%.
When, do you suppose, Amazon.com will ever take the clue that folks REALLY love good deals on DVDs?
Sometimes, some of the items in the Gold Box section are only 5% markdowns. No big savings there!
But the past couple of days have been spectacular for some lucky shoppers.
-

"GaGa"? -- translation? "Grandmother"?

Yes.

Oh....does that mean you have a "sanity clause" in your employment contract?

WXPN is starting their Brazilian music show...nice!
-
DR Edisaurus, that is nice to know about Esther Rolle...I always adored her!
-
All of you guys and gals are the GREATEST! Jackie Gleason would have agreed. I knew some time ago when I discovered Bruce, Guy, the unmentionable previous site and this one that I truly found my home. Thank you all!
-
Ok, I just added E.T. and KOI MIL GAYA to my Netflix queue...along with KRISSH, which is the sequel to KOI MIL GAYA.
-
I just heard Os Mutantes on the Brazilian show. I'm putting them on my shopping list, but somehow I doubt I will find them at my local Borders.

I stayed home and I'm glad I did! Thanks so much for mentioning this.
-

Amy, go to DustyGroove.com. Their Brasilian section is non pareil, and you can get Os Mutantes in abundance there.
-
And actually, I think Border's will have one or two of Os Mutantes in their world music section.
-
Would I like Os Mutantes?
-
I shall now be on my way to a rehearsal, a meal, and then a run-through. Keep the home fries burning until my returning.
-
Would I like Os Mutantes?
Probably not. ;D
-
The World Music section at our Salem BORDER'S has shrunken from a whole aisle of CDs to one very tiny, tiny section. I was sad.
-
Off to see the world. Well, Target, anyway.
Bye for now!
-
Topic of the Day: in my CD burner: the laserdisc soundtrack and then the London cast recording of 1776. ;D

So...YES!! The check will be in the mail (with my correct address)!! :-* :-* :-*

Would I like Os Mutantes?
If you like The Beach Boys' SMiLE album, you ight like them.
Or if you drop some acid first, you might like them.
Is that a fair assessment, JMK?
Thanks for the tip!
-
JMK, did you recognize the Os Mutantes song they played?
-
Jeff, I also sent you a confirmation e-mail. ;D
-

-
And now, I'm off to my parents' house for some more visiting with the relatives. :)
Have a good day, all!
-
JMK, did you recognize the Os Mutantes song they played?
I came in late, Amy, sorry. But that album that Sing posted has some of their most well known, so maybe it was from that one. If you liked them, try Grupo Manifesto, one of the earliest groups the future Mrs. Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, was in.

Yes, especially the dropping acid part (not that I would know anything about that, of course). 8) Os Mutantes are among the followers of Tropicalia, the psychedelic movement that was started by such folk as Caetano Veloso and, to a lesser extent, BK semi-fave Chico Buarque back in the late 60s and 70s.
-
I survived. Now to put together the slide show for tonight....
-
DVD:
From Netflix - episodes of WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE
I had no idea! I just added season 1 to our queue.
-
Got my grocery shopping done without problems. The store was almost empty, and I zipped right though the checkout line. (I did pay.)
-
I began my afternoon viewing by watching the Christmas episode of THE CLOSER from last season. Just like it did when I first saw it, I had tears streaming down my face through much of the last half hour. A really great show.
I think Kyra picked the right episode for her Emmy submission, but this would certainly have been my second choice for her.
-
Matt H, yes I know Michael’s mother has some annoying & silly lines. It is just that I get it now. She simply wants him close. He was gone so long and didn’t even write. It isn’t about what she says or does, it is about her missing him & trying to understand his life & why he wasn’t around. I am now more tolerant of her character & appreciate her more.
-
Next, I watched five episodes of RENO 911! from the fifth season set. (There are 16 episodes in all.) One of the five I hadn't seen, so I'm sure there will be others that will also be new to me.
Jack Plotnick plays a running gag neighborhood sexual predator always trying to lure kids into his house by offering a free haunted house or holding NUTCRACKER auditions (of course, Dangle shows up wearing tie-dyed leotards). It's very funny when he's questioned about what he's doing.

I get it, too, Jane. I just don't like it.
-
There are three episodes on the first disc that have commentaries, and I listened to one of them since I had seen the episode before and didn't need to hear what the actors were saying. I assume all of the commentaries are going to be as free wheeling as that one. The two actors (Cedric Yarborough, Wendy Covey) did some really good scat singing.
-
And my favorite recurring character Terry has been in three of the five episodes I watched (including the one that I hadn't seen during the original broadcast). I didn't realize in the season premiere that the girl who played his "girl friend" was played by Christina Applegate!
-
Speaking of copyrighted material surfacing on the web, it didn't take long for the CLOSER season 3 gag reel to show up. At least the poster says he'll take it down if asked.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RPsPnvRXGCc&feature=related
-
I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke and no sign of him in next week's previews either.
-
I ended my afternoon viewing by watching the first half of last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. The dog stuff was really funny since Kathy's dogs are perfectly fine until she riles them up. I'll be curious to see how that dog whisperer segment pays off later in the show. I have the gang at their "seminar" right now. Kathy and Steve have just sneaked in the back door.

Thanks. This is good advertising for the show :)

I get it, too, Jane. I just don't like it.
Poor Matt H! I'm going to side with Nursie on this one; I love Sharon Gless and I think part of what I enjoy about her is Michael's combination of love and annoyance. I do admit that she works better when she's an integral part of the lot, from putting up guests in the garage to dealing with her two sons, but the creative team can't always guarantee that much in an episode when they're trying to keep balls of the main caper in the air.
-
Hello, Y'll!
I'm back in LA - my sister Rikki had a terrible spine surgery on Tuesday, and I'm bringing her home today. I'll be staying with her at least a week.
As long as I was coming down, I booked a gig as Music Director/Arranger for a production of Harold Pinter's BETRAYAL at the Matrix in Hollywood - starring Henry Simmons and Sophina Brown who co-starred with James Woods in Shark. Sophina just booked a regular starring role on Numb3rs - can't wait to see it.
Anyway, it's a sparse, very well-acted production, and they allowed me to hire in classical cello and clarinet with a honky tonk piano, and do all the cues in 3/4 time - waltz - get it? - the three actors (three instruments, get it?) all dance around each other... the director kept changing his mind about stuff, but by last Saturday had made some good decisions - which left all day Sunday to write/re-write my arrangements, and Monday to record the cues. I used that great Russian cellist I had on the last gig. So much Fun!!!
So the show opened last night - Variety was there, Vanity Fair, blahblahblah. It all came together in such a satisfying way!
-
Larry, I don't think I'd be any competition!
-
I used all public-domain stuff - with little counter-melodies between clarinet and cello, and the piano just going um-pah-pah throughout. Even used the Libiamo from Traviata for right before the "Hey, let's get as drunk as we can!" scene...
-
Libiamo dance for page 7!!! and, of course, it is a waltz...
-
I'm just sitting here, waiting for the hospital supply company to deliver a raised toilet seat and a shower bench...
-
I had been home at the cabin for a whole 10 days...
-
Rikki had all kinds of damage from disk stuff to stenosis to a very large cyst on the inside of her spinal column in the lower back. Surgeon got it all cleaned out, excised the bone, used it for a bone graft in another spot, and put her all back together like tinker toys - with titanium rods and pins. She'll be in a body brace for months. I don't know if I could have faced it, especially after that horrible neck surgery last year... she is such a good sport - this week, she is my hero!
-
And thass all the news from here... my other sister is still just kvelling over the grandchild!
-
Wow - 10 more posts and I'm at 2500...
-
Thank you DR ELMORE....they are much appreciated.
Of course the same people who walked out of FOOTLOOSE because they thought it was "the one with the monkey" walked out of ALL MY SONS last night because they thought it was the "Fred MacMurray."
Hahahahahahahaaaaa!!!!!
-
Gratuitous post just because no one else is posting.
same here, on my way to 2500...
-
Well, I see I have cleared out the room... back later to visit...
-
Hiya Penny!
Prayers and vibes for your sister!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Oy, what a day I had today!
(Actually, just busy with some surprise tax rushes, not a big deal, but I thought I'd make an entrance.)
-
Now I must clean the bathroom because we have company coming over tonight.
-
Going to drop off line now to write just a little bit and then head back down for more Kathy Griffin and then more RENO 911. Later tonight - BATMAN BEGINS on Blu-ray.
-
Spoo!
WBBL.
-
Larry, I don't think I'd be any competition!
Darlingest, dearest, loveliest PennyO, I would never dare to compete with such a talented lady! I think the 3-player idea was wonderful, and i'm sure the scoring sounds great and proves to be exactly what the play needs.
-
Oh, sorry I just missed DR PennyO! Sending healing vibes to her sister and patient-care vibes to Penny - you're a peach!
-
I used that great Russian cellist I had on the last gig. So much Fun!!!
It didn't happen to be Armen Ksajikian, did it? I LOVE him!
Wow, that came together fast! Congratulations, Penny O! I'm glad you didn't adopt the current trend of making the actors play their own instruments!
-
Well, the Mamma Mia! soundtrack pleases me very much, with one exception. Where's "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do"? Makes me wonder if the story has been changed for the film. Looking forward to seeing it soon!
-
what I enjoy about her is Michael's combination of love and annoyance.
Since I'm sure I have that same reaction on my boys, I gotta appreciate her ;D
-
Penny-Please send Rikki our best wishes for a complete recovery. Hopefully this will be the last of her surgeries.
-
And now I must go to the police station.
-
And now I must go to the police station.
Did one of the VBSers turn out to be a little ba*tard?
-
DR Laura, why do you make comments like that and then leave!! :o ;D
-
She must want to keep us on our toes....
-
Vibes to PennyO's sister Rikki... I hope she makes a speedy recovery!!
-
George,
Cool that you won a cd player from a candybar...
-
We slipped out for an hour or so to have Skyline chili for dinner.
George,
Cool that you won a cd player from a candybar...
Ah, that's nothin'. I've won cavities and pounds from candy bars!
Ah, that's nothin'. I've won cavities and pounds from candy bars!
ROTFLOL-I'm sorry to say I'm also a big winner.
Off to run a few errands... Will be back later...
And the word of the day is: PROPOUND!
And The Song Of The Day Is: SHALL WE DANCE?
Shall We--GERSHWIN'S? RODGERS and HAMMERSTEIN?
Yes indeedy!
DR Ginny, did you discover the "hidden track" on the Mamma Mia! soundtrack? :)
-
Vibes for DR PennyO's sister Rikki. ~~~~~~~~~~~
-
What is the hidden track on the MAMMA MIA soundtrack?
-
If you let the last track play past the end of the song, you get a rendition of "Thank You for the Music" that is not on the track list.
-
Yes indeedy!
DR Ginny, did you discover the "hidden track" on the Mamma Mia! soundtrack? :)
I did, and it has kind of a ragtime sound to me. I like it.
Yes, they definitely tried something different! :) I wonder if that's in the film.
Hello!
I have had a heck of a bad week...
After just one week of marriage?
-
We had some chinchy bassas visit overnight and a report of such needed to be filed.
-
Your home or the church? Sorry either way.
-
One of the headaches at work this week, left to me by a dear colleague on vacation, was an executive flying in from Poland for a long term assignment in New York. He was travelling with a wife, two children, and a cat. And due to some screw ups, no place had been secured for he and his family to stay for the next 60 days after he arrived, starting with that very night. Well, I scrambled, and one hour before he touched down, had it arranged.
This morning, I came into work to the message that he had never shown up and/or checked in to the corporate apartment. After I sent an embarrasing *wtf?* email to our corporate client, it turned out that the information had been wrong; he had, in fact, arrived and was safely sleeping there.
It was a day of high drama.
-
Hello!
I have had a heck of a bad week, and I am ready to par-tay! 8)
You should have joined DR Jose and me for Mexican food. I had a margarita; DR Jose did not. It was a lovely visit with a dear frend.
DR Singdaw, glad all is well and the family wasn't stranded.
-
DR elmore3003! I love Mexican food! :) And dear friends even more!!
Thanks, DR Jane!
-
So, DR Jane...are you watching "Greatest American Dog"? :)
-
After just one week of marriage?
At work, DearReaderLaura DR. At work. :)
-
Your home or the church? Sorry either way.
At the church.
-
Hope nothing was seriously amiss with your night visitors. :(
-
I am glad you were able to fix someone else's mistake, DR Singdaw.
-
Nothing serious, but we don't have an estimate on the repairs yet.
-
I wonder if it's a sign that VBS displeased Her somehow?
-
It's not nice to fool Mother Nature.
-
WELCOME TO PAGE NINE!![/size][/color]
-
Just listened to "Judy [Garland] at the Grove" today on CD for the first time. Boy, that band is crackerjack! Judy's voice sounds a little worn, but she's still exciting.
-
So, DR Jane...are you watching "Greatest American Dog"? :)
No. Should I be? I will go check it out.
-
DR Jane. I dunno. There's something repellantly cheesy about the reality shows that I've sampled. I just thought, you know, that the dogs might redeem it somewhat. And from what DR JoseSPiano said, maybe the dog owners, too. ;)
-
Whew! I'm getting tired. I guess I may just have to par-tay at some other point over the weekend.
-
I found "Greatest American Motorcycle", no dogs.
I did notice STARGATE:ATLANTIS returns tonight. :)
-
It's back to VBS for the ice cream social to sing the cheesy songs for the parents. Then it's over for a year!!
-
Hello! I don't know much. Paul needed to escape the heat so I left work early and we went to the last matinee showing of "Wanted" We both laughed and laughed. No one else in the theater laughed. How can they not think that movie is funny? Well, there is lots of blood, violence and death but still
According to a reviewer we like:
“High-octane action; silly but with great visual flair.”
-
My mom told me on the phone today that next week is "Mamma Mia" week on Lifetime. I just sat through 2 episodes of Reba :P to find out what that means. Apparently, the 9pm movie each night next week is "hosted" by cast members.
You'd have been so proud of me, babe! I traded the melodic lines between the clarinet and cello, and had them in 6ths harmonies, and wrote some lovely little counter melody phrases!!! It was so much fun!!!!! Still, YOU da man!!
-
DR PennyO's back - HI, Pen!
-
Good Evening!
And, yes, I joined DR elmore for a lovely dinner - sans margarita for me.
Fun, fun, fun. Dish, dish, dish.
:)
-
Hiya Penny!
Prayers and vibes for your sister!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you my angel! I just got my sister home and upstairs into her OWN BED! She's so happy to be home. I'll make her a decent dinner - god, she lost so much weight! The food was so awful - I brought her two different meals yesterday... she hadn't eaten in days!
-
...sans margarita for me....
You're not on blood thinners, too, are you, DR Jose?

Oh, sorry I just missed DR PennyO! Sending healing vibes to her sister and patient-care vibes to Penny - you're a peach!
Thanks, Gins! She is making wonderful progress each day, considering what she has been through. She is WAY easier to care for than my parents were... she's sweet and gracious and appreciative, like our Grandmother was...

It didn't happen to be Armen Ksajikian, did it? I LOVE him!
Wow, that came together fast! Congratulations, Penny O! I'm glad you didn't adopt the current trend of making the actors play their own instruments!
there are some actors who are competent players - but when that's the prerequisite to getting the acting part, how can the acting not be compromised??? I like it when the actors are hired to act - and if musicians are needed, we hire the best ones we can afford, and let them play instruments!

There are no accidents.
I went to get my hair cut today. I go to a place that is two cities north of me. (Boynton Beach) On the way home I stopped off at a Super Target. And lo and behold I ran into an old friend who I haven't seen in ten years. We first met on a show I co-wrote (Lysistrata: The Musical) and from there we cowrote and I directed his one man show Survivors: A Kurt Weill Songspiel. We caught up we promised not to let another 10 years go by. I pulled out the videos of the shows that we did.
God! Lysistrata needed a lot of work. I wanted to do a lot rewrites during the rehearsal, but because the new scenes were not with Lysistrarta the director nixed it. (The director and the actress were going out at the time.
So many of the jokes that looked good on paper died on the stage. I would have loved to done the show again. But the composer wanted to move on. This was done 15 years ago!! The subject of the story still holds true today.
There really is some good writing in there and some good songs, but if played NYC it would have opened and closed on opening night!
Maybe I will put the better parts up on YouTube. Once I download it to my computer.

Penny-Please send Rikki our best wishes for a complete recovery. Hopefully this will be the last of her surgeries.
Thanks, Jane. I'll tell her. From your mouth to God's ear! Her surgeon is hopeful that he's fixed her, and she'll have her life back. Fingers x'd.

DR PennyO - I've learned in the past month that, as a patient, it's best to be like your sister. What good would being crabby do?
-
Vibes to PennyO's sister Rikki... I hope she makes a speedy recovery!!
Thank you, m'dear! She has always been athletic, and in pretty good shape, so she does bounce back better than most. I'm guessing that, if i can keep her from running the world for the next week or so, she'll have a good recovery.

Thank you, my swell Singsong boy! It feels very natural to me, being the caregiver... wonder what that's about???

Vibes for DR PennyO's sister Rikki. ~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for the kind wishes, Jenn.
-
Hi PennyO! Good to see you. Vibes to you and your sister~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You're not on blood thinners, too, are you, DR Jose?
Nah. Since my allergies have been acting up lately, I'm staying away from "adult beverages" since they seem to enhance my symptoms.
*I also saved those calories for dessert. While I was walking down Broadway to Columbus Circle, I stopped into Jacques Torres for one of his/their Ice Cream Sandwiches: a generous(!) dollop of chocolate ice cream between two of their generous chocolate chip cookies. I probably should have just eaten half of it and stopped. Probably. ;)

Hello, my sweet honeyboy!! Thanks for the good wishes. love you
-
DR Jose - so, where exactly on Broadway is Jacques Torres?
-
Thanks, Gins! She is making wonderful progress each day, considering what she has been through. She is WAY easier to care for than my parents were... she's sweet and gracious and appreciative, like our Grandmother was...
And I'm sure appreciates her big sister very much. :)

DR Jose - so, where exactly on Broadway is Jacques Torres?
Jacques Torres is actually a block off of Broadway, on Amsterdam and 73rd. Just a block down from Levain. ;)

Oh, I see - the "ruin-your-diet" block.

The guys painting the outside windows etc on my house are doing a wonderful job. The window frames had to be painted white because the upstairs have been done with white metal siding sort of stuff so it would look funny to have any color other than white. But - the white just shines it's so clean and nice. And they have dug out all the old crud around the windows and front door and regrouted and sealed them. That's great. I can see that it's windy, but I can no longer feel wind coming in around the windows. YEAH!!!
-
They are still going to fix a numbe of little things, including a broken window, the cement on my front porch and other little things. And we are discussing doing indoor painting and finishing the room I demoed in the basement later in the fall when the jobs get a little slimmer. I am SO happy about this, but it means no trips for me. That money will go into the house this year. I've decided to spend my holidays working on the house. It will be great.
-
I've been watching footage of the Chad Mitchell Trio from 1962-65 on the ed Sullivan Show, the Dinah shore Show, Hootenany, the bell Telephone hour, and some Canadian folk show that let them sing things the american censors wouldn't let them do, like their tribute to Ole Miss and the civil rights riots. I feel 16 again and a bit nostalgic at the moment.
I think I'll watch the first act of the last Glyndebourne production of CARMEN to get back into a chic and sophisticated state of mind.
-
DR Cillaliz - it's great when you find people you trust to work on your house.
-
Think I'll go heat up a Dutch almond patty and put a big glob of vanilla ice cream on it.
Here's the description of the Dutch Almond Patty form Casey's Bakery in Sioux Center, IA
Our signature item is our Almond Patties. Buttery puff pastry filled with almond paste and sprinkled with sugar, it is our version of the traditional Dutch Banket. Purchase them already baked or frozen and enjoy "just out of the oven" goodness at home.
-
Hi PennyO! Good to see you. Vibes to you and your sister~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you, Cil - feels nice to see everyone here! I just made us a little dinner - she didn't eat much, but bit by bit...
-
Here's a link to a recipe for the Banket. http://mysisterskitchen.wordpress.com/2006/12/04/a-dutch-almond-pastry-called-banket/ (http://mysisterskitchen.wordpress.com/2006/12/04/a-dutch-almond-pastry-called-banket/)

Well, good night, dear friends... I'll go upstairs and hang with Rik until time to go to sleep. Byeeeee....
-
'night, Nurse Penny! Take care of yourself, too.
-
Lots to see in tonight's viewing schedule. I began by finishing MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Kathy at a Bears convention was wonderful. (Too bad we don't get to see her entire act.) The dogs on the treadmill was so funny and endearing.
-
Next I watched four episodes of RENO 911. (That makes a total of 9 episodes watched tonight.) Seth Green was very funny as the manager of a fast food joint (we thought until a great twist.)
-
Then I put in the new Blu-ray of BATMAN BEGINS. Those with HD-DVD who bought the film on that format already have experienced what astounding picture and sound it contains. I was absolutely blown away by the Dolby TrueHD sound. I thought the Dolby Digital sound on the standard DVD was great, but the TrueHD had a way of going up and over my entire room rather than just coming straight at me. It was THE MOST interesting sound design I've ever heard on a film in my viewing area. Amazing. The picture quality was truly stellar.
-
The Blu-ray features the six minute prologue to THE DARK KNIGHT which opens next week. It's a fabulous introduction of Heath Leger's The Joker, and, of course, makes me greatly anticipate seeing the movie.
-
I finished the evening beginning the next episode of BURN NOTICE on disc two. It's the episode where we first meet Michael's brother. I only watched about 15 minutes of it, so I'll finish it tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch. I did see this episode when I was getting into the show last summer. Maybe I've caught up with the ones I hadn't seen (which must have just been the pilot).

Just read that the wonderful actress Evelyn Keyes passed away of cancer at an assisted living home in Montecito, California at age 91. She died July 4th.

Another GONE WITH THE WIND alumnus gone. I liked her and am sorry she has left us.
-
I'm heading down now to go to bed.
Good night!
-
Time for me to get some sleep. Night all.

Vibes to Penny and her sister from Skip and me

Back from our run-through. It went very well - some things to attend to, but overall a really good shakedown. All the humor worked well, and the pace of the show is really good - it's just energy stuff and taking the stage and making sure our boys are leading the audience at every step. It was actually amazing they had ANY energy left after the eight hour rehearsal. More in the notes.
-
bk - Good to know that "Jersey Men" went well tonight.
-
OK... Me sleepy...
Goodnight.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I know I have to write notes, but I'm just not ready yet.
-
We're not having a rehearsal tomorrow, but we're meeting at Panera for notes. I think Kevin has pretty much decided that's it's folly not to have me in NY for the three rehearsals and show, so I think they'll be flying me in. Does anyone know anyone who might have an empty place I could sublet for three or four nights?
