Well, you've read the notes, the notes had further ado, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having some ado right now.

Yesterday, we all went to my parents' house to play some Sorry and Aggravation and conversation (mainly family stories and history).  Later in the afternoon, we all went to Applebee's to celebrate Larry's (my sister's boyfriend) birthday and more conversation (again, mainly family stories and history).  After that, we went back to my parents' house for more conversation (guess what about) and playing of Phase 10.  We finished Phase 10 right at midnight.  I came home and watched a repeat episode of "Doctor Who" (Martha's first episode) but should've watched last night's brand new episode.

This morning at around 11:00 am, the aunts (my dad's two sisters) are leaving to go back to California. :( I thought that they were going to be here for two weeks, but I was wrong.  So I said my goodbyes last night, when I left.  And then this afternoon (around 2:00 pm), my cousin John and his wife Angel are heading back to Coquille, Oregon (which is a good thing, since that's where they live).  I'll be able to see them today before they leave to say goodbye then. :)

Joe Kolinski and his lovely wife Allison and their wonderfully delightful (and super-bright) daughter were over for dinner last night.  And believe it or not, the word "callipygian" came up in dinner conversation - what are the odds that it would be the word of the day today?
Title: Re:ADO
Post by: elmore3003 on July 12, 2008, 06:01:32 AM
Good morning, all! Wasn't callipygian a word of the day not too long ago? Or was that steatopygian?

This morning, more Toyland notes here, then the 42nd Street NYPL to peruse correspondence by producer Charles B Dillingham. When I get back here, I need to thoroughly vacuum the apartment as a preventative measure, plus the floor needs vacuuming.

Best hotel: 2002, London, The South Bank Hotel. Wonderful! A great place to spend a week or more. I've forgotten the name of the hotel on Oxford Street where I stayed in London for a month in 2001, but it was also quite wonderful.

Title: Re:ADO

The show went well last night, but Chris is just TOOOOOOOO slow, he won't speed up no matter what anyone tells him, brings the whole energy down, but he is saying MOST of his lines.

He won't stand up where I told him, too, now he waits too long, but I am not going to say anything else....there are other things he's doing that screw up the scene anyway...so....well I won't write what I am thinking.

Our Director's Handbook also specifically states that Directors should not schedule off site rehearsals on PRODUCTION NIGHTS because that keeps Board Members who are in their show from being available to work box office/parking/cleaning during our show....so of course SINGING IN THE RAIN is rehearsing EVERY NIGHT we are running.....  That puts a lot of the work on those of us who are left....as usual.

SHALOM

And The Lyrics by Jerry Herman(Music, also) go like this:

I Find Shalom

The Nicest Greeting You Know

It means Bon Jour,Salud & Skoal

And Twice As Much As Hello

It means a million lovely things

Like Peace Be Yours

Welcome Home

And Even When You Say Goodbye,

If Your Voice Has

" I Don't Want To Go" in it

Say Goodbye With A Little "Hello" In It

And Say Goodbye With Shalom.

The margarita that DR JoseSPiano didn't consume:

Um, if the margaritas as La Cocina came in actual margarita glasses I may have had one.  However, they serve them in the same glass tumblers they serve their water in.

*But I probably would not have had a margarita last night even if it was served in the proper stemware.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The Crown Towers (http://www.crowntowers.com.au/default.aspx) in Melbourne.  A HUGE room.  A great view of the Yarra River.  Impeccable amenities and service.  And, best of all, a different treat/candy/mint on the pillow each night of my stay!  ;)

*OH!!  And truly best of all, since I was traveling there on business, I didn't have to pay for the room!!

The Topic of the Day continued...

I also remember staying at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, DC, for a weekend.  I had a weekend gig in DC and the Omni happened to be offering one of their crazy good weekend package deals, so...

The Omni Shoreham is one of DC's classic grand hotels, and the rooms are grand as well.  -Well, they recently remodeled and slicked up the place a bit, so they may not be as grand now, but, I digress...  The room was HUGE!  Three large windows overlooking Rock Creek Park - adorned with gold draperies.  Two king beds - it just happened to be the room that was available when I checked in - so the bedroom area was also quite large. A full sitting area that was basically like a living room, and a bathroom with a shower and a tub and lots(!) of towels and a phone and TV!  I still remember trying to call some friends to come over to help me enjoy the room - not that kind of enjoying DR elmore - with me but no one was available that weekend.  I even splurged on a room service breakfast the day of my departure since it felt like the right thing to do.  ;)

This was about 15 years ago - maybe 16 or 17 years now that I'm doing the math - and I was able to enjoy all that grandness - and space! - for just $54/night!!!!  A true bargain even then.

*And I also liked my rooms at the Omni Berkshire Place here in NYC.

Topic of the Day: There was a great hotel on that little island directly across from Lahaina, what the hell is the name of it? I think Rupert Murdoch built not one, but TWO, count 'em, TWO hotels there... one at the dock and another up the hill... anyway, I stayed in the one up the hill - YOWZA!! Totally luxurious in a very Imperialist Swine way, with dozens of happy Hawaiian servants to each guest. I have never experienced that kind of luxury at any other time of my life. But I wouldn't say no to it...

Another was in Laguna - the big fancy one - what the hell is the name of it?? (not enough caffeine, yet, to accomplish this little exercise...) The year my mom was diagnosed as terminal, the whole family and all of the grandchildren went to that hotel for three days for a last Family Fling. Wonderfully decadent. My dying mother was still running the world at the time, and insisted on pushing my dad's wheel chair herself. Oy. What a piece of work she was...

Tonight, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE is coming on HBO (It's on during the day, too, but I didn't set the DVR). If I'm finished with RENO 911! when it comes on, I'll watch it "live" on HBO-HD (I did not buy it on Blu-ray; I've never been a Simpsons fanatic.) If it looks like I won't be finished with RENO, then I'll set the DVR to record it and watch it when I get finished with RENO.

Anyway, looks like that's how I'll be spending my evening. I don't think the movie is that long, so if there is any time left, I'll watch another BURN NOTICE.

What arrives in the mail today will determine what I'll be watching for review when I finish RENO 911! I'm expecting four Criterion discs, one of which (MON ONCLE ANTOINE) comes out on Tuesday, so it would get priority. If they don't arrive today (and I doubt they will), I'll have to proceed with TV FUNHOUSE from Comedy Central, another boxset.

We now have a hands free device for our rarely used cell phone. We've had it for a week and I used it to activate it, to call the apartment to make sure it works, to call Anthony to tell him it works and to tell him the number and that's all. I bought the device because you can't use standard headphones, the plug is too big. It comes with a microphone also so if/when Anthony or I use it we will look hip and with it

A friend of mine just invited me to tonight's presentation of "Compose Yourself!" at The York.  It's a revue of Larry Grossman songs featuring Larry Grossman at the piano playing for Liz Larsen, Howard McGillin, Jason Graae, Lorna Luft, Darius de Haas and Nikki Renee Daniels (from Lestat ;))

HOO and RAY!

We also have a new caller ID box. I thought all boxes automatically showed incoming call waiting numbers but the unit I have is small and cheap and never showed those numbers. I came across another box today that specifically mentions call waiting so I'll spend some time switching out the boxes. That's the news from Chelsea.

I should have said something yesterday. I'm not a bachelor yet but I have been alone this weekend. Anthony stayed on Long Island to get ready for the trip to Wisconsin. I left work and went uptown to look at the TKTS booth. There was nothing on that interested me (and the line was too long) so I came home. I could have joined dear Larry and Jose for Mexican food and a margarita. We haven't had Mexican for a while and I haven't seen Dear Larry and Jose for too long! Oh, well, soon I'll be a bachelor with lots of free time on my hands.

My recent stay at the Arlington VA Ritz Carlton was the best value for the buck I've had, with a special $149 weekend rate.  But my favorite overall rooms that I can remember right now were at the Polynesian in Disney World in 1995 and the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta in 1984, with a nod to the well-located Britannia Intercontinental in London.

Still, the thrilling view of Epcot in 2000 from the Dolphin on my 40th birthday was the best combo of timing and location, even if the hotel itself and service attitude there were a big disappointment for the bucks paid.

Regarding hotels, I must constantly remind myself when staying in an especially nice place dollar-wise, that while to me it's a splurge and a special occasion, for the hotel employees it's just another day at work, no different than any other work day even though I want my stay there to be a special event.  :)

I forgot to wish bon voyage to Mr. Brockman. I was in Israel in 1985 and had a marvelous time. We were in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and took day trips to Masada and the Dead Sea and Jericho and Bethlehem. What a time we had, a nice Irish boy from Minnesota/New York pretending he was a Jew in Israel  ;D

The only difficulty was when we were leaving the country. My friend and I went through separate exit gates and the newly trained clerk mistook me for a bad man and was extremely rude and threatening. She called over her supervisor who looked at me asked me a question and waved me through. I hope the trainee was re-trained after that incident.

Journey to Jerusalem at Epcot used the same ride technique as the Hanna-Barbera ride at Universal, only you were an aerodynamic piece of Torah parchment flying through important events in israeli history.  Very effective, especially for a temporary Epcot ride.

Our new caller ID box works. I used the cell phone to call the land line and it showed up on the ID box. I guess there is an advantage to having a cell phone when you still have dial-up internet. You can call the land land from the cell phone and lo and behold the number shows up in the ID box as an incoming call. Hooray. Now we just need to move from dial-up to DSL. That may happen during Anthony's absence, or it could wait until he returns because it means a visit from the man from Verizon and Anthony won't be here to greet the phone man and take him out to the back yard to work on our phone box (no, that's not a euphemism)

Her son and daughter in law came by while I was out - that was a treat for her, too. On the mend. She was very grateful for all your good wishes. The Hollywood Collector's Show may have run its course.  I said that last time, when heavyweights Peter Falk and Patty Duke were there.  This time there were no real heavyweights - one dealer described Friday's attendance as "a morgue."  Today there weren't many people there.  Several people, like Barry Pearl, my pal Annette Cardona, and the other Grease people at least had people around them and they said they were doing fine.  Druxy told me Bridget Hanley had done well yesterday, but there were hardly any people even walking up and down her row.  Other wonderful folks like Catherine Hicks sat at their table completely alone.

It may simply be time to cut it down to twice a year and really stock up on the celebs.  Even Celeste Holm had no line at all in the entire three hours I was there.

I spoke to lots of folks I knew - the Grease folks (Barry, Annette, and Eddie Deezen), chatted with my old friend Helaine Lembeck (sister to Michael, daughter to Harvey - she used to be on Welcome Back, Kotter, and Robert Hegyes and Ron Pallilo were there.  I spoke to Bridgit for a while, and also to my old schoolchum Harrison Page - great to see him after all these years.  And Candy Clark and I had a really nice chat.  Also seen but not spoken to were Rod McKuen, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn, Catherine Hicks, Randall Kleiser, Amy Dolenz (very pretty), and lots of others.  I also said hey to my dealer friends, but this time out there were even less dealers than the small number they usually have.  Last show I heard much grumbling from them about attendance and I think about ten of the regulars just gave up the ghost.

Prior to the show, I had a two-hour notes session with Kevin and Sean.  They totally understood each and every note and will work hard to address them on their own over the next week or so.  I completely rewrote the patter to one of Sean's songs, personalizing it and making it relevant to Sean and the audience.  And I completely rethought the non-existant arrangement and came up with something really exciting - I could see him breathe a heavy sigh of relief when I told him what it was.

They're definitely flying me in to NY, so please keep your ears open for a place for me to sublet or rent for three days - a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - the 24th, 25th, and 26th.

It was a fun day. As soon as mom and dad got here, they said "We have to go back...we forgot your birthday cake"  That cracked me up.  It was nice they went to the trouble to get one, but funnier that they forgot it. We went to Bev's on the River where Dad and I had Prime Rib Sandwiches and mom had a BLAT (it had avacado in in so it can't just be a BLT)

As we were talking, mom told my dad it was terrible he hadn't shaved. He insisted he did and it looked like he had to me...then we realized, he only shaved 1/2 his face. LOL. We had a great laugh over that one.  After lunch we went shopping at the mall, went to Culver's for frozen custard and then to Sam's Club.  It was a nice shopping day. Lots of stuff on sale and I got some good deals.

I'm very glad they came down. We had a good time and now I am very happy to be sitting in my recliner with my feet up.

DR Jennifer, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a heads up regarding the proposal, still we were somewhat surprised he didn’t mention purchasing the ring.  I would have expected comments indicating some sort of interest in marriage.  And we never expected him to propose on his way to medical school!  I must say the surprise of it all has been fun and exciting.

On the other hand we have been expecting Craig to announce his engagement for the last three years.  The surprise is he hasn’t-yet. ;D

TOD: Boy that one isn't easy.  I have had some nice rooms at various places when I've gone to conferences.

I tend to judge the room by the bathroom.

The Fairmont in Chicago was nice. I think that was the first hotel I stayed at with a separate shower, separate room for the throne and separate bathtub with both a phone and a TV in the bathroom.

As far as hospitality and helpful staff, it's hard to beat the Algonquin.  When I stayed there they were wonderful. I still remember being asked how my day was and I said "fine, how is yours?" He said "Wonderful now that you are here". Cheesy, yes, but I ate it up.  Plus, they have a cat there.  Even though I had a small room, I felt so at home.  If I could still get the great government rate, I'd go back there

I am in the middle of watching a very fun and very flashy Bollywood film. DHOOM:2, which is a sequel to the smash hit DHOOM.

I loved DHOOM...even thought it is of the action genre which is not normally my favorite...but this film, and it's sequel, are just so much fun, and they don't take themselves so seriously.

Welcome nine GUESTS.  I'm catching up on CD listening.  I was given a huge batch of new releases yesterday - so far the first two are great.  One is the score to the new version of A Raisin In The Sun, which is, surprisingly, great.  Filled with melody (unlike 90% of what passes for film music these days) and very beautiful.  Now listening to a good collection of music for Alain Resnais films, including, of course, selections from Stavisky by Sondheim.

What cat?

Friend's of ours.  It was fun.

I left the cat food in the cat area as requested (a nice place in the garage) & went out with the dog.  He was so cute I think I played with him longer than I should have.  After he peed we went back inside to find the cat hadn't touched his food.  His seizure meds are in that food & I wasn't leaving until I knew he had eaten it all.  Since the cat is shy with me I slid the dish in front of him, in the kitchen, & then sat with the dog to pet him while the cat ate.  Once the cat was done I figured the dog had enough of a break between running & eating, only he wouldn't eat unless I sat with him.

Those animals know a sucker when they see one.

I started RENO 911! back up and finished all 16 of the episodes in the set. Funny that Comedy Central/Paramount didn't waste ANY time getting this out on the market. The season I just watched tonight just finished up this week on the network. The set comes out on Tuesday!
Title: Re:ADO
Post by: Matt H. on July 12, 2008, 08:24:30 PM
In addition to the commentaries, there were about an hour of bonus features on the third disc. One was a half hour of psychiatrist interviews with the cast in character and improvising lines. Three of them were fall down funny. I'm sure these were all recorded for the shows but there just wasn't time to work them in this season.

And on one of the commentaries, one of the star-writer-producers admitted the show hasn't been picked up for another season yet, so maybe they thought they'd better put these out now in case they don't get picked up. (I think RENO 911! is one of Comedy Central's highest rated shows.)
Title: Re:ADO
Post by: Matt H. on July 12, 2008, 08:25:56 PM
The other bonuses were four extended scenes which had been (wisely) heavily edited for broadcast. These were the complete improvised sessions, and at least three of the four were way too long and needed to be cut for broadcast.

When I woke up today, I knew I had planned to do this, and had planned to do that.  But I had absolutely no idea just how much fun it would be to do this and that.  In short, I had an absolutely wonderful day.  Unexpected and wonderful!

I did indeed attend Broadway Barks (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119403.html) earlier today.  Basically, Shubert Alley turns into a pet adoption site for a few hours, as well as a fundraising event for various animal causes. A fun and worthwhile event. There were many celebrities with their pets, and many(!) dogs and cats with their owners.  Surprisingly - and thankfully, I only "smelled" one accident.  ;)

We have not actually stayed at the beautiful Fairmont Springs Hotel, (http://www.fairmont.com/banffsprings) only walked through it.

Now it will always have a special place in our hearts as Bryan called us from there yesterday.  He and Kate were sitting on the terrace having drinks, enjoying a view of the beautiful Rockies.

They called us to announce their engagement!!!

I also happened to run into the long E&T Jason while I was in Shubert Alley.  -We actually haven't seen each other in almost a month, so it was very nice to chat with him face to face rather than keyboard to keyboard.  He's doing well, and is currently in "audition mode".  Yeah!

DR JoseSPiano, I'm jealous!!!  Have a fabulous time at the show tonight.  Give Jason Graae a big wet slurpy kiss from all of us DRs!  :D

Well, I did not give Jason a big slurpy kiss - even though I wanted to - but we did exchange a very hearty handshake and some goofy smiles.  However, I did give Liz Larsen a big hug and kiss, and I finally got re-meet her son, Andy (formerly known as Alessandro).  The last time I met Andy, he was only eight months old!  He's now 11!  "Did you know that I babysat you a few times, and even bought you some baby clothes?"  WOW!

There were also a bunch of friends and acquaintances in the audience tonight.  DR elmore's work-mate, Curtis, and his writing partner, Tom were there, as well as Phyllis Newman, Amanda Green, Michael Feinstein (who sat in front of me - he's shorter than I thought he was ;)), and a slew of actors who knew me from various and sundried auditions.

*DR MBarnum - Charles Bloom was there tonight, and he sends his regards as well.

It was a planned meeting - the first time we met each other since having dinner at Genghis Cohen in L.A.  Since he had worked with Ms. Peters on various projects, they were able to chat a bit while she signed the stack(!) of books that he bought.  Thankfully, she seemed to have the booksigning thing down pat - very fast, very legible - he didn't end up holding up the line as much as the people us thought he would.  Of course, since there were some diehard Broadway "fans" in attendance, Walter got stopped a few times for his autograph once the event proper started.

We had made tentative plans to meet up with Pat Suzuki, a.k.a. "my idol", but she did not make it over to Shubert Alley today.  Someday... ;)

And, yes, Bernadette looked very good.

She just happened to be sitting in the little plaza across from the stage door of City Center enjoying her between show break with some of her castmates - who I knew.  *They all liked my Mambo t-shirt.  ;)

I've always meant to ask/comment about this.  It seems that there's a Hollywood Collector's show every month.  Well, at least every other month.  I would think the frequency would automatically diminish the attendance from show to show, n'est-ce pas?  Wouldn't just twice a year be better?

Yes Adam it's the 12th Anniversary of my 35th Birthday.  Thanks. It was funny, mom kept saying "I can't believe you didn't shave today" and he kept saying "I DID shave"  It wasn't until I looked at both sides of his face that we figured it out.

There was a great song in tonight's "Compose Yourself" revue.  It was sung by a character who had reached a "certain age".  After realizing that "thirty-ish" no longer applied, she opted for "thirty-eleven".  ;)

*Then admitted to actually being "thirty-thirteen".

In my experience, if you ask for the government rate, you tend to get it.  The fact that you know that there is a government rate is usually enough "proof" to qualify for one.

*In fact, I remember when I would regularly stay at the Edison and the Skyline, there were a couple of times when I would call to make the reservation, and the agent would "ask" me, "You qualify for the government rate, don't you?"  -Yes.  Yes, I do.

Well, I have to get up early to buy roses.  I'm thinking a dozen for the office and a dozen for home...for a grand total of $12.00   Better set my alarm!

Hmm... Well, actually, I guess I would hope that they would ask for proper ID.  However... I think the deal with the Skyline and the Edison was that once the reservation was in their system as "government rate", that was what the desk staff honored, passed on to me.

Although, now I'm remembering a time when I checked into the Edison, and the desk agent asked if I was here on business.  I informed her that I was, and she then asked which company.  I told here I was in town for some freelance theatre.

"Where are you from?"
-The DC area.
"Oh!  Have you ever worked at the Kennedy Center?"
-Yes, I have.
"Well, we offer the corporate rate to employees of the Kennedy Center."
-I'm not working there currently.
"Is there a possibility that you will work there again?"
-Yes, there is.
"Well, then you qualify for the corporate rate."
-Thank you.  Thank you very much.

Oh what a night. BK graciously allowed me to slip into Friday's rehearsal of the new Kevin Spirtas/Sean McDermott show he's directing and it was a blast from start to finish, even though there was not one Finnish song in the entire show. I shall not get too specific, lest I spoil it for those who might be attending the East Coast premiere, but the show's concept is quite clever, the guys are terrific and the staging is brisk and bright. There were river songs and sea songs, shadowy hat tricks and Grease-y Partridges. The only downer: my ever-lovin' Amy had to stay late at work to finish a non-Finnish project and couldn't make it. But, upon its return to Los Angeles, we shall definitely be catching the show, wherever it might be staged. So, again, thanks, BK. It was a night I shall cherish (ping!).

Jose, that would be my thought - twice a year - right now it's four times a year and after fifteen years or more of this it's too much, especially in these economic times.  Twice a year would enable him to bulk up on the celebs and maybe get more dealers back there - that's the big difference between where it's currently held and the Beverly Garland where it used to be held.  There the celeb room was much smaller than the new venue, but because of that it always looked jammed.  Plus there were about six other rooms with just dealers.  Now there are only a handful of dealers and I think it's hurt his show.

One of the funniest things that happened last night was when Kevin forgot the entire set up (with Sean) to one of his numbers - he began singing it and realized it made no sense because the very funny set up had been skipped.  He stopped and told the audience he'd forgotten the set up and he'd have to go back and do it.  As Sean met him center stage, Kevin said, "Boy am I going to get a BIG note about this" at which point I held up my notepad which had a big note on it.  It got a really big laugh.

OH!

Walter Willison and I had hoped to dine at West Side Cottage earlier this afternoon. Alas, when we got there, the front "gate" was down.  Behind the gate, there was a sign on the door stating that they were closed for renovations... Until September.  Alas, with the way that block is changing, I'm fearing that it might be renovating into a different restaurant.  :-\

*Oh, and Piece of Chicken has shuttered too.  However, it looks like a truly temporary closing.

As for the topic o' the day, Amy and I last year stayed at a rather odd B&B in Capay, Calif., a small town located outside Sacramento. The B&B was a converted 1898 farmhouse located on a 142-acre working ranch, complete with chickens, roosters, kitties, horses and another farm critters roaming around outside the front door. If that wasn't enough wildlife, there were also llamas and zebras, too. Amy and I gotten lost en route to the B&B, and we were starving when we arrived. When we walked inside the kitchen, a chicken was roasting in the oven ... and it smelled delicious. How I wanted that chicken. Alas, it was not to be. We had a show we had to go see that night. Upon our return from said show, the kitchen still smelled like chicken, and that made me even hungrier. We were told before we left that we were free to munch on leftovers, but there were no leftovers to be found ... save for a large plastic, Costco-size container of Pace picante sauce. And so, for dinner, that night, I, ahem, picked up the Pace, poured it in a bowl, and pretended it was gazpacho.

There was a guy I knew who got sent off to a Pennsylvania boarding school when he was a teenager. He hated it. Every chance he got, he'd go hang out in New York City. He didn't have much money to eat in the city, so he'd make himself "bacon" sandwiches, which consisted of mayo and crumbled barbecue potato chips between slices of bread.
