Last night, my friend Josh (we've done several shows together) had a party, celebrating Alaska.  Why, you might ask?  Well, I'll tell you.  Actually, I already have in a previous post...but I'll tell it again.  He had the party because he and our friend Bill are going to Alaska for a hike (I don't remember which trail it was).  The food at the party was potluck (I brought peanut butter cup cookies) and we had to wear something that had to do with Alaska.  Josh was dressed up like a saloon bartender.  Bill dressed up like a guy panning for gold.  Bill's girlfriend dressed up like a gold nugget (she wore a gold lamé dress and had gold glitter all over her).  Another man put colored barrets in his hair and said that he was the Aurora borealis.  I wore a Hawaiian shirt, jeans and my Birkenstocks...I was a tourist who got on the wrong plane and ended up in Alaska instead of Hawaii! ;D The food was good and we watched part of "White Fang," which shows part of the actuall trail that Josh and Bill will be hiking.  The party pretty much got over by 11:00 pm (and we didn't finish the movie), but a good time was had by all. :)

This afternoon, I'll be ushering again for The Rocky Horror Show.  My friend Margo will be ushering, also...as will her daughter Alexis, who just got back yesterday(!) from studying a year in France!  Well, Alexis said that she wanted to usher that soon after getting back, so if she hasn't adjusted back to the time change, it's her own fault. ;) I'm sure that she'll be fine.  Either way, it'll be a fun show to see.

DR Jane, i must have logged off last night just when you posted your question.

Actually it's not my ankle that i hurt. It is the top right part of my foot.

And i can actually walk 100% fine.

But for some reason it still does not want me to put on a aock. No matter how loose it is. And thus i cannot put on a running shoe. :(

I've been wearing flip flops or sandals for the 3 weeks. And right now that feels fine. But i would like to put on running shoes so i can bike again!

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the washers, and I have to vacuum the entire apartment this morning while the dryers do their magic. I've begun assembling my next Ohio shipment so cartons are startng to accumulate.  As son as some payments arrive, I'm shipping these mothers.

Today, I have top work on an arrangement for tenor Kip Wilborn, and in my email this morning I received files of the band parts for this George M Cohan medley that Daniel Rodriguez is performing next weekend. The cop[yist asked me to proof them, so that will be a couple of hours from my day.

Rod McKuen was one of the first people I did arrange, ents for in Manhattan; Ben Bagley and he were friends and Ben had asked me to do some numbers for a couple of JEROME KERN REVISITED's. I had lost a film score job because I had no studio experience, and I figured doing some workfor Ben would get me into a recording studio. Ben was very very cheap, which is why the quality of his later recordings runs from very good to very abysmal in one track, but I'd been buying from him for the Drama Book Shop and he was charming, funny, a great raconteur, and I had to gain some experence. I was never paid for my work for Ben nor was I ever given free records, so after doing several for Ben, I found myself too busy to do further ones, but I still enjoyed hanging out with him and hearing his stories about working with Hepburn and others.

McKuen did two charts: "What's Good About Good Night" and "That Lucky Fellow," which he did very well' "What's Good About Good Night" had more of a range than he so it was rewritten in the studio to fit him!  I have to say tha I wasn't a fan of McKuen's work so I wasn't sure how I'd like him personally, and he was charming and kind and effussive and enthusiastic beyond belief; he and Ben, because they'd known each other since the beginning of time, were a hoot together, and I left the studio with a lot of wonderful memories of him.

Yes, DR Jose! Some of the papers in the Dillingham files could have been papyrus, and someone in the Rare Books & Manuscripts didn't catalogue the correspondence well: one folder which should contain letters from writers with the last name initials P-R, 1910-1912 had a large group of correspondence from 1920 and 21.  I found interesting letters from Joseph Cawthorn to Dillingham on why he was withdrawing from THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER and letters from Dillingham to Anne Caldwell and Cawthorn on means of convinvcing him to stay with new material and songs. Letters to the costume designer in London from Dillingham explained his ideas behind musical numbers and descri[tions of songs like "How to Sing A Ragtime song" that didn't make the show.  All quite good and helpful and much more interesting than the non-research the Fat Conductor of Limited Talent and Limitless Ego performs.

I also found a letter from Anne Caldwell to Dillingham on the show's running time: Act One and Act Two: 50 minutes each, Act Three: 45 minutes. They bred giants in those days.

...her daughter Alexis, who just got back yesterday(!) from studying a year in France!...
Why would anyone go to France to study a year?  I can understand going to France to study the cooking, or the art and archetecture, or perhaps the history, or maybe even winemaking, but a year can be studied practically anywhere.

Unless, of course, the year she was studying had particular meaning in France, and little meaning anywhere else.  That would explain her trip.

Good morning!

I was up very early mowing my front yard. I had hoped it would be cool, but it wasn't. This is always the most miserable time of the year to mow grass. No time during the day is cool enough, and one just starts to wilt after five or ten minutes.

Today I'll watch another BURN NOTICE episode while cooking and eating lunch. Then I'll start Comedy Central's TV FUNHOUSE. It's only eight episodes long, and never having seen it, I don't even know if it's a half hour or hourlong show (I'm guessing the former). I do know it's raunchy and politically incorrect, but that's OK. That can be fun.

On TV tonight:

BIG BROTHER 10 (for those still watching). There is a gay contestant on the show in this cycle, and, of course, one of the other contestants on a CBS promo spouting the usual Bible-thumping hatred before the show even starts talking about how gays aren't going to heaven. How completely and totally tiresome.

DR Jose - thank you for sharing your wonderful yesterday with us.  The photos were smashing and the day sounds like a lot of fun.

You're most welcome, DR Ginny.  However, I have to say that regardless of whom I had the good fortune to run into yesterday, the true star of the day was the City of New York.  There just seemed to be lots of "GOOD" in the air to go along with the picture perfect weather conditions.  Everyone truly seemed to be smiling yesterday and enjoying and relishing all that the City has to offer.

Even as I was walking back across town from the York, the streets were still teeming with happy, happy people - many of whom were coming back from the free Bon Jovi concert in Central Park.  And with the baseball fans in town this weekend for the upcoming All-Star Game, all the fans are just Fans.  Not Yankees' fans of Mets' fans - just lovers of baseball, in general.

Time to get ready for work yet again.

Yesterday they asked me to stay an extra hour even before I'd clocked in.  Good thing they did, because at six (when I'd been scheduled to get off) we were completely swamped with customers.

Tuesday, I'll be wrangling carts instead of going to the Farmer's Market.  I'd let der B go to the market by himself, but there's no telling what he'd come home with.

Veggie wise, that is.  (Lordy, I was setting myself up for a euphemism alert that time, wasn't I?   ::))

Yes, we will have our own senate and cabinet and officials and the first two things I do in office are abolish the IRS and put everyone on some sort of flat tax, or simply tax the wealthiest of businesses in a major way, and take the oil companies to task and give them twenty-four hours to roll back prices to $3.00 a gallon for starters.

Hello, DR's...

My older sister Tami - who was in BK's class in High School - came over this morning with bagels and cream cheese for Rikki and me. Nice visit. Rik's making wonderful progress - and I told them both that I would be leaving LA for the cabin on Friday. Tami will take me to the Burbank airport. Among our large family and coterie of family friends, there will be enough people around to take up the slack without taxing anyone. It will be nice to get home - and STAY home through September - I tell yiz.

In which they they will raise their prices to re-coup their loss.

der Brucer

They won't because there will be more penalites if they do.  I think it's time for some of these obscenely profitible companies to share the wealth.  There is no excuse nor reason that people have to pay the kinds of taxes they do.  So, everyone will pay a reasonable flat tax based on income, and the rest will come from businesses and I'm just betting if you took away all the wasted money that gets spent year after year on meaningless things in this country, that one would be able to run this country just fine on that kind of money.  It's 100 years of idiocy that's brought us to where we are.  And I can't imagine anyone is thrilled with the economic situation in this country.

Hutch # 2 was found at an estate sale. It now houses part of a vintage Barbie collection.

Note the Barbie in the original box...my grandma had that sitting in her close all of these years and I she gave it to me shortly before she passed away. She had bought it for one of the grandkids way back in the early 60s, but had forgotten all about it! After that I became the keeper of our family's old toys.

Well, until the Commies take over - that won't happen. You can impose price controls, but you can't make a company manufacture or sell goods!

Exxon/Mobil is a less profitable business venture than is Target! Their profit margin is quite slim, it's just the fact that they are the world's largest corporation that makes their gross profits so large.

I sure hope a bk administration plans on enlisting the help of some talented economists and doesn't rely on Ouija Board policies.

Oh, der Brucer you're just towing the same party line that's been towed for the last 100 years, which is why nothing ever changes.  I'm going to weep for the "small" profit margin, emphasis on the word profit, of billions of dollars?  That's some small profit margin - you believe what you want and I'll believe what I want.  The financial waste using people's tax dollars is appalling and all it would take to really effect change is two million people standing up and saying "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" and then refusing to pay taxes.  Want to know how fast things would change?  Instantly.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon watching TV FUNHOUSE. I got four of the eight episodes watched. Each one has commentary, so I listened to some of that, too.

The show is very hit and miss, mostly a parody of a kid's TV show but with animal friends called "Anipals" who have nothing much on their minds except having sex and making poop jokes.

There are some fun cartoons, though. Wonderman is Superman except he uses his X-ray vision for X-rated things.

Marvelous Mitchell is Dennis the Menace who's a mean, bigoted kid.

Steadman is, who else, Oprah's superpowered boy friend.

There are four bonus features on the disc I'm watching including some stuff with Conan O'Brien's Triumph the Wonder Dog (who guest starred on two episodes) and some deleted scenes.

Real life guest stars so far have included the late Robert Goulet, the late John Ritter, and Goegr Wendt. (The show was filmed in 2000-2001 before either Robert or John was deceased.)

I am now trying to imagine our esteemed BK trying to buy the canned tuna and pasta he needed for his pasta salad at Gelson's without paying the sales tax.  I can see him leaving the store.  I can see him leaving the store empty handed.  After a few more attempts at trying to buy his tuna and pasta without paying the sales tax, I can see him told by management not to come back to the store.

Yes, BK, they can refuse to sell to you if you refuse to pay.

And that goes for the sales tax at every restaurant you go to, as well.

Your new diet is going to be a gangbusters success.

(Of course, you could move here to Delaware, where we don't have any sales taxes.  But first you're going to get here without paying the required taxes along the way.)

Good Evening!

I finally made it out of the apartment a couple of hours ago.  I really had no plans to do anything, so I just took the A train down to Chelsea and walked around for a bit.  I found myself over by Madison Square Park, and then walked up Broadway to check out the "new" Broadway Boulevard project.  Hmm...

They taken away two lanes of traffic between Times Square and Herald Square - a span of eight blocks.  They've added a dedicated bike lane, and, supposedly they will be adding cafe seating along the way.  Hmm...

That stretch of Broadway is not exactly the most scenic, and it's very office building saturated.  No tourist spaces, not much shopping, etc.  Of course, since they took away two lanes of traffic, there's not a bottle-neck when you travel south on Broadway at 42nd Street.  Hmm...

*However, it does look like the bike lane extends down to 23rd Street.

And the shade of green that they've painted the bike lane reminds me of that stuff they would use in grade school after someone had thrown-up, that greenish-blue powder to help clean up and deodorize.  Hmm...

Oh, now, I know you love to read CAREFULLY - I'm not talking about sales tax - sales tax is fine and dandy.  I'm talking about personal taxes.   I'm talking about taxing the billion and trillion dollar corporations instead of the little people - you know, those corporations that get amazing tax breaks and concessions from the leaders of our country.

I am the people's candidate, baby!  You can go around in circles and you can toe the party line, but it doesn't make what's going on good, right, or fair.

It's the Mystery Meat Game.

No, BK, you said taxes.  You didn't qualify.  You didn't say which taxes.  And what you said was that if two million people stopped paying taxes, that would instantly create change.  If not sales taxes, which are instant, what other taxes (which are more delayed) could create such instant change?

If one says "if two million people stop paying taxes" I think it's pretty clear what's being talked about.  Note the absence of the word "sales" in front of the word "taxes."  Why would two million people not paying sales tax cause the downfall of the IRS, which is, I believe, what I was talking about.  If two million people said "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" and didn't pay their income tax, there would be a swift change in the way this country is run, believe you me.

I am the people's candidate and you can spin and spin and all it will get you is dizzy.

The story had multiple parts with Michael manipulating a jewel thief, a foreign agent (trying to get some leverage so he could find out why he was burned), the bounty hunter.

This was one of the busiest episodes of the season, but the writers kept everything balanced and interesting. I really enjoyed seeing it again.

Here's a basic recipe from the Food Network:

4 to 5 zucchini
4 to 5 yellow crookneck squash
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons finely chopped onions
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Slice zucchini and squash very thin. Heat olive oil and saute onion until tender. Add zucchini and squash. Toss until tender and crisp. Add salt and pepper. Serve immediately (if it sits to long it will become mushy).

*The recipe can easily be halved or quartered.

And I concluded my evening with tonight's LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. A pretty good episode, and I did guess the identity of the murderer though my ideas about the motive were a little off. Joan Jett was the most famous name in the guest star list.

Did you notice one of them had a hyphenated -Nicholson last name, so I'm wondering if it was the blonde wife and she's Julianne's mother in real life.

Today, I ushered for The Rocky Horror Show again.  The show was good, but there were three people in the audience who had seen the movie way too many times...and didn't know when to turn off the audience participation interaction. :P The house manager had to talk to one guy during the first act, and the other two (who were sitting next to each other) got reactions from the actors.  It was funny up to a point, but then it just got a bit annoying. :-\

Well, no one can say we didn't get to page nine.  What a shame that all the errant and truant WUSSBURGERS won't get to the initials game until tomorrow - I have decided on the initials and they're great and I've already got three pages of names - that's how great it is.

Am done with my Bollywood "Snow Man Yeti" movie and now am moving on to MAHAKAAL (1993) which is a copy of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. It is creepy, but in a very cheesy sort of way.

I am really enjoying these Ramsay Bros. Bollywood horror films, even despite being on VCD with no subtitles!

I'm watching Ebert & Roeper with Richard Roeper and Michael Phillips.  They both love the new Batman movie.

Just had to share. :)
