Well, you've read the notes, the notes were funky, and now it is time for you to post until the funky white cows come home.

At the end of yesterday's posts tomovoz asked where TCB has been.  Where HAS he been?  Don't want him to miss out on his book and bonus gift.

Yesterday at work, we had our annual summer barbecue!  I brought a watermelon that my mom gave me.  It was very good...it was not seedless, so it actually had some taste to it. :) Otherwise, it was your above-average barbecue (we had more than 30 people sign up!) with burgers, hot dogs, salads (green, potato, macaroni), fruits, etc., and some very good desserts, such as assemble-your-own banana splits, carrot cake, brownies and cookies.  A good time was had (and too much food was eaten) by all. ;D

We had the Apple IIe at school, but the first computer that I owned was the Texas Instruments 99/4A.  It had a whopping total 16K of memory!

It used a tape recorder for memory storage.  To program music, you had to enter three numbers for every note...one for the pitch, one for the volume and one for the duration, and you could only program up to three different notes at any one time.  If you wanted one note to hold while another changed, you had to actually repeat that holding note.  I once programmed "Birdland," recorded by The Manhattan Transfer, but was only able to program half the song at a time (and up to three notes at a time) because there wasn't enough memory for the whole song!  I loved that computer, but my parents sold it at a garage sale when I was away at college. :P

I didn't get my first home computer until 1995; it was some sort of early Power Mac, I guess. Until then, I had been perfectly happy using the computers we had at work. In 1984, when I started while still in high school, the computers we had weren't individual Macs and you did not need a mouse to operate them. All cursor movement was done with keystrokes. God, I loved that. A mouse is fine, I guess, but I never typed or worked faster than on those old terminals. Every single paper I had to write in college was written, and then typeset, on those old machines. It wasn't until the early 1990s that the company finally started transitioning to Macs and mouses; at first, I only needed to work on the Macs once a week ... and those first few times trying to use the mouse were excruciating. I wanted the mouse to go one place, it went the other. I wanted it to go here, it went there. It was maddening. I wanted to shove it in a mouse trap and smash it to bits on many occasions.

As for the Internet, we first started hearing whispers about it in the early 1990s ... maybe 1993 or so. We had one young girl in the office who was offering to teach people how to get their own account/address through the university. I don't even think she was using the term "e-mail" at that point. And so she led a few of us out there into cyberspace, on some sort of shoestring dial-up connection that barely worked, from one -- count 'em one -- machine in the office that had access. You could maybe stay on there 10 minutes, maybe 15 minutes before you just lost the connection. I think the first place I navigated to was a theater-related forum; it might have been rec.arts.theatre.musicals. I posted, asking if anyone had a certain souvenir program I was searching for and, lo and behold, someone had it, I bought it, and I was hooked.

Good morning, all! I thought the trash bag lady should have been dumped.

Another round of final edits this morning and then a cou0le of hours at the NYPL Rare Books Division. Yesterday's session went quite well; we got through the very very long prelude and opening number and the next two numbers in the score. This morning we'll start with No 4, maybe finish the first act.

I have to do some charts on this NYMF show before tomorrow's meeting, and I've got to gewt into the orchestration for Kip Wilborn. July is flying by!

TOD: I never wanted a computer, but when I was offered a used Mac in 2001, I said yes. The one I'm sitting at for the nonce is No. 3, and I like it very much.  Outside of emails and Google, I didn't do much with the first Mac; I was quite busy at the time with the initial phases of the Packard Humanities Institute project.  By the time things quieted down in 2002, I had discovered eBay and was buying a lot of BABES IN TOyLAND items, along with vocal scores and other ephemera of other people's lives.  I occasionally went to Sondheim.com to check things out, but  don't think I ever posted. In 2003, Liz Callaway told me about BK's site, and I went to it, sent BK an email wishing him a happy Thanksgiving, and here I am.

But...

When I got back to my room last night at little around 1:30am, I found that the internet system here was having issues.  Online.  Offline.  Online.  Offline.  Then eventually nada.  In any case...

In short, in the span of about 10 hours, I managed to hit all four park: The Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios.  Of course, the rain did start up as soon as the monorail pulled up the Transportation and Ticketing Center, but it wasn't too bad, and it also acted as "crowd control".

I basically walked a loop around each of the parks, rode a few rides, and enjoyed some a attractions.  And I was finally able to ride the Rock'N'Roller Coaster.  Twice!  -As well as the Tower of Terror.  Twice! -During the "extra" Magic Hours at Disney Hollywood (formerly MGM) Studios.

One very cool side effect of the rain was that almost all of the animals were out during the Safari at Animal Kingdom.  A lot of times, if it's too sunny and too hot, most of them end up taking cover to stay cool, but not yesterday.  :)

I got my first computer in 1992. It was a packard Bell with a thrilling modem  speed of 28.8.

However I do remember using apples and macintosh computers when I was school for doing homework, etc. We did not have internet at that time.

I co-majored in computer science in college (late 1970's) and remember having to type in programming info on punch cards, one line at a time, and if you made a typo, you had to type the card again.  I could program fluenty in four "computer languages" - PL1, cobol, pascal and assembler - but now I'm stymied if my computer even freezes; I had a knack for the programming, but not the computer installation and maintenance (which many insist is the comparatively easy part) for some reason.

EMmy nominations were this morning, and I've been on-line since the live announcements looking at the nominees.

Big surprises: no Best Drama nomination for GREY'S ANATOMY (the ridiculous BOSTON LEGAL got in), but DEXTER, DAMAGES, LOST, and MAD MEN got Drama Series nominations. Boy, what a competition that's going to be!

No Best Comedy Series for UGLY BETTY or PUSHING DAISIES (or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES but it didn't make the semifinal list) and the undeserving ENTOURAGE got in the line-up again. (I like the show, but it was a bad season for it last summer.)

Kyra Sedgwick DID get nominated, but I was a little scared when both Mariska Hargitay and Holly Hunter got nominated and there was only one spot left in the list. Kyra's name came last in alphabetical order.

JOHN ADAMS led all shows with 23 nominations. 30 ROCK had the most series nominations, but that's because SEVEN guest actors from the show were nominated: four men and three women. MAD MEN came in third with total nominations.

LOST would be my pick unquestionably.

Well boston legal would be out for me. Not a good season.

You think they would pick damages over dexter? I like them both, but would have thought they might have preferred the latter.

My first computer was an Atari 800XL. It had 64K of memory, and used a cartridge slot for programs. Of course, once floppy discs became THE way to load programs and save material, one could buy a standalone floppy for the computer, and I had that.

64K doesn't sound like much now, but it was enough to be able to have both a word processing program (which didn't come with spell check back then) and a spell check program loaded at the same time. Multitasking on an Atari computer WAS possible.

My first modem was a 300 baud modem, and all stuff on-line then was text-based.

DEXTER too bloody and disturbing for the conservative Emmys. DAMAGES has a bonafide movie star as the lead and a labyrinthine mystery plot. No contest. Yes, they choose THE SOPRANOS a couple of times for best drama but it took it many years to win its first Best Drama Emmy.

Again, I'm not saying *I* prefer it. I'm going by past picks by the Academy.

I got my first computer (that Atari 800XL) in 1985. A new bank in town was offering free Apple IIc computers (a portable version of the Apple IIe) with a certain amount of money deposited in a savings account, so I did that and got an Apple IIc, too (my school used IIe computers, so I could do work at home on the IIc and take it to school to use with the IIe.)

My first IBM compatible computer (called clones back then) had 512K memory, and I bought one of those probably around 1988. I liked the "clicky" keyboards, the large number of extra buttons to handle specialized tasks in programs, and since those computers seemed to be the mainstay in business, I thought I'd jump in early. I've had PCs ever since.

TOD - The first computer in our home was an Apple IIE on which Richard started his doctoral dissertation.  He replaced that with one of the first Macs in town, a 512K that I learned to use when writing a grant proposal for Middfest in 1986.  Richard completed his dissertation on that machine, too, and only lost 2 bibliographic references in the transition.

When I went to work at Dayton Metro Library in 1997, they were just making the switch to Windows and many staffers were having a terrible time with the mouse, the GUI, etc.  My Mac background helped a lot and enabled me to adapt to the PC environment pretty quickly.

We are still a totally Mac household, with my eMac, Richard's iMac, and our shared MacBook.  I'm pretty sure when my eMac dies, I will replace it with a laptop instead of another desktop.

Punch cards were my first computer experience -- at college also (mid-70s).  And when I worked on the college newspaper, I remember typing the headlines that came out on long strips of yellow paper -- looked just like yellow ticker tape. That stuff was all over the news room.

I was not fluent in "computer languages" then -- and I'll be darn if these new-fangled contraptions still don't leave me scratching my head.

DR Jennifer:  I don't know whether to feel insulted or not.  I hope you know that I am well aware that what is presented on TV is a severe edit of what goes on inside the house.  I've been following "Big Brother" as long as you have, if not longer.

I have also subscribed to 24/7 service in the past and become totally consumed with it, a mistake I won't make again.

I also read daily updates.  I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I truly don't need a lesson of any kind.

As for Renny, it's not about Renny.  It was never about Renny.  Renny has nothing to do with what was happening in the house.  It was all about Brian and the very weird attitude he was copping with people.

He overplayed his hand and it bit him in the ass.  Even though he put on a show of being "fun Brian", the final vote tells the tale.  From folks who "lived it" and have no agendas beyond game play.

And here's a big HOO & RAY for all nine of the voters -- to Dan for staying true to his misguided friend and to the other eight for not being dumb enough to fall for Brian's obvious attempts to charm them into believing he is this benign, fun-loving guy who posed no threat.

I admired his remarks to Julie Chen, though.  He totally knows he overdid everything and was guilty of bad timing.  You don't go into the house and start telling people you can save them for a week or two and then expect not to have a bullseye on your back.  Brian was, in effect, a dumb player.

First computer....which was basically a word processor although I think it had a few games, too, which my brothers loved to play.

Second computer....I loved this computer which I got in 1992, and used it until moving up to an IBM compatible in 1998....  Did lots of script writing and theatre work on it....and the handy dot matrix printer....banners, posters, had some really nice and easy to use programs for word processing, accounting, drawing, list making, greeting cards....all kinds of stuff...but of course NO WINDOWS.

I was there at the dawn of the PC, and it wasn't a pretty birth.  :)  In those days, I was working in-house for a temp service but was the "disaster savior" who would go on assignments to salvage situations when any given temp couldn't handle whatever dedicated word processor that particular office had.  I never had any problem walking into an office and quickly figuring out the different systems:  DisplayWriter, Xerox 360, Lanier, Philips Micom, and everyone's favorite, Wang.  :)  Then along came the first generation of PCs, usually with WordPerfect (when did WordPerfect lose the war with Word?).

My first home PC was the "first" multimedia PC out there, the Tandy SENSATION! (with the exclamation mark--it made it easier to market to musical lovers).  It was a nice little computer, I did my first big sequencing compositions on that beast.  I still remember working on a commission on that thing with a brandy snifter in one hand and my trusty mouse in the other (no, that's not a euphemism).

I also found a scorpion crawling around my living room at 5 am.  A scorpion!   Now, really!  Not what i wanted to encounter.  I don't even live in the wilds of the desert, so God only knows why it was there.  Suffice it to say i did not sleep much after that.

Project Runway

I was a bit overwhelmed by them having 16 designers.  It seems like four too many, for some reason, but they will probably do one or two double-eliminations down the road.

It's too soon to have a favorite, sorry to say.  Not enough personality was shown, IMO, to get a handle on what any of them is about.

The designer Elmore has dubbed "trash-bag lady": I think she survived the cut because her "outfit" was truer to her style than "shower-curtain-raincoat guy's" was to his.  A "dubious" distinction, to be sure.

It was interesting seeing Austin Scarlett again.  Glad he is in NYC where he can "blend in"!  LOL!  He made some really good comments during the judging, and I wish he had been as editorial in his own designs when he was a contestant because I have to admit he was my favorite in Season 1.

The "bleached-blond-tanning-guy" was very lucky last night:  While Austin Scarlett thought his model was wearing a diaper, I thought it looked like "something else", entirely.  It was "hideous" in the extreme.  Along with some of the other designers, I'm over his use of "girlicious"!

But that's what makes the show so doggoned entertaining!

I thought some of the designers did pretty well given the materials they were expected to use.  There is promise there.

Next week, I expect the "dreaded" (for me) "team" concept to apply....three teams of 5 each???  Or five teams of 3 each?  Anyway, it looks like there's gonna be some trash-talking going down!

Have you considered a  hearty stroll brief hobble around a city park to re-acquaint yourself with the homeless?

According to my friends who frequent the public library here in town, I could accomplish the same thing there.  I keep telling them that the problem here is just the tip of the iceberg that we see in the bigger city (where the library is just a few blocks from the bus station).

DR Matt H.  I’m glad you didn’t remove your appendix for as a preventative.  Most people catch it early if they listen to their bodies.
I removed my ovaries to prevent cancer, no guarantee it will work & even listening to my body the odds of catching it early enough are very slim.

TOD:

My first introduction to computers was in 1979-1980 when the library at the Defense Information School (located at that time north of Indianapolis at Fort Benjaming Harrison) installed six units.  I don't know what kind they were, but they were linked to a number of mid-western colleges and universities.  I learned some programming and wrote some quizzes for students to help them brush up on their Associated Press Stylebook knowledge.  Couldn't remember how to do it today to save my life.

From there, I went to USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, that had a Wang computer system.  The entire ship was linked to it and I learned all I needed to know to get work done on it.  We even prepared the text for our daily newspaper on the Wang.

I had exposure to other PC systems, later, in Naples, Italy, and on the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), using mostly WordPerfect.  When I started working with the County of Alameda, they were using Wang.  A few months later, we shifted to HP computers and MS Word.

I got my first personal PC in 1996 or 1997.  PacBell was offering a free Compaq Presario unit for any DSL service subscription.  The rate was $39.99 per month.  After 24 months, the computer was "bought."  I've had the same DSL service all these years (which is now $59.95/mo.), but I replaced that tired old Compaq unit last November when I bought my new HP system with a 24-inch flat-screen monitor.  I know the Compaq probably should have been replaced much earlier, but it served its intended purpose very well.  I've still not managed to get it out of the Condo, either.

I worried so when Craig brought Yogi over from Romania.  Craig said he never wants to move Yogie by plane again.  The cat wasn’t so bad since she could was small enough to travel in the cabin of the plane.

Kerry and others - go to yesterday's posts, page one, and it explains how to pre-preorder.  As I said, it's not going to be up on the Kritzerland site for another week or two, as the web designer is traveling.

But here it is again - send payment directly to kritzerland at adelphia dot net (replace the "at" and "dot" with the usual signs) - $24 for the signed book and bonus gift (of which there are only 19 left now), and $5 for priority shipping, for a total of $29.

DR Jennifer:  I don't know whether to feel insulted or not.  I hope you know that I am well aware that what is presented on TV is a severe edit of what goes on inside the house.  I've been following "Big Brother" as long as you have, if not longer..

I guess maybe it's not easy to interpret what people really mean on HHW just by reading the text.

Because i was not trying to insult you. I wasn't even specifically talking about you.

I actually found what you wrote insulting. As if my finding jessie's body unappealing or my really liking brian was wrong.  You don't have to agree with me. But what i think is what i think.   The funny thing is the 2 boards i read (tvwithoutpity and hamsterwatch) both loved brian. Although i actually liked him immediately from the sunday night show.

I watched Big Brother once, I think during my lengthy stay in NY last year - I didn't like it at all, but then again, I don't like any of this reality TV stuff.  I actually didn't mind it when it was called You Asked For It, or Kids Say The Darndest Things or stuff like that.  It's the DRAMATIC music and the way the things are edited.  I'm reminded of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - a simple game show with all that horrible SUSPENSE and DRAMATIC music and those PAUSES - I couldn't stand it.  I liked the old Password, when it was fun.  Or the $64,000 Question.

I apologize for any comments or postings I made that you considered insulting.  My posts of the photos of Jessie yesterday were an attempt to get other opinions as to whether he looks "ridiculous", as you said.

I think anyone who takes care of his body, especially "naturally" as he does, it to be commended.  I've seen some overdone body builders in my life and Jessie isn't anywhere near in danger of becoming like them, so far as I can tell.

I was offended by April's first-day parading around of her breasts, insisting that each houseguest feel them to verify that they are, indeed, real and not implants.  But I can look past them, for the most part, as long as she doesn't flaunt them.

As for Renny:  Poor thing.  Every time she has a chance to speak on camera she can barely string three coherent phrases together.  She was introduced Sunday as a hairdresser from New Orleans.  Tuesday evening, she was called a "New Orleans socialite".  Somewhere in there is an interesting story and I'm sure she can be totally delightful when she's in her element.  She's a fish out of water in that house, as is Jerry.  Her propensity toward being ditzy doesn't help.

okay no problem.

Actually i really don't find jessie's muscles look natural at all. I'm not saying they aren't. But when he took off his shirt a few times, i really thought that he looked awful. They were so big, and i really dilike that look.

I'm not sure how i feel about april. I thought that boob feel stuff was ridiculous. I sort of liked her with ollie when i first saw them together. But i did not like her and libra ganging up on ollie. Although like i said i really did not like what he did. I know he had to save himself. But to me it was the worst way possible. He made a deal and sold out his group right away, without a second thought.

One thing i wonder, is why didn't jerry talk to brian before the veto ceremony. All he had to do to keep his honor (IMO) was to just tell him what had happened before.

Well renny, the less said about her the better. Nobody seems to like her. and i actually thought she was the one way out of line in the jessie fight.

DR Ron P., I agree to a T with your entire comment on BB10.

I think Brian got caught up in the excitment of the game, and he seems to realize it. I imagine he is probably a pretty fun guy in regular life. Dan is being much more low key then I had expected him to be. He will be interesting to watch, although if he plans to always stick to his word, he is likely not going to stay in the game long...unless he never gives his word to anyone.

I am eager to find who Steven will end up being buddies with. I think he developed a bit of a crush on Brian.

Renny, Renny, Renny...interesting gal. LOL! I do like some of her clothes.

I particularly agree with Ron as per his comment on Jessie's body. It takes a great deal of work to do that. It is like a sculpture or a painting, only you are using your own body as the media. Anyone who has the discipline and fortitude to do it has my hearty respect...and for me it is pleasent to look at  8)

I still don't fault Ollie for what he did. It was a good move for him. Keeping your word is not ususally an advantage in this game...in fact making promises to people this early in the game is not a good idea at all. At this point you hardly know the other players well enough.

Libra is so pretty! I love her face.

Well renny, the less said about her the better. Nobody seems to like her. and i actually thought she was the one way out of line in the jessie fight.

She is annoying, yes.  Very annoying, and then some.

But in her defense, she was absolutely correct in calling Jessie a liar in Jerry's room after he said he wouldn't accept an apology that was two days too late.  She did apologize to him -- twice -- the night of the incident.  He was wearing that hooded jacket.  CBS showed the footage during that evening's broadcast after Jessie claimed she never apologized.

To me, he's the immature "boy" she claims he is.  In his defense, it does no good to go on and on about it the way she's done.  She's turning into a harpy.  He's young and has little to no use for anyone over 30.

Jessie was "wrong" about the apology and tried to mount a horse way too high for him.  But they both need to get over it and move along.

LOL!  I thought the same thing.  He was almost like a puppy dog when Brian was schmoozing him.  That's the most we've seen or heard out of Steven since the background CBS gave on him that first night.  Maybe he was pickin' up on that San Francisco vibe!  :)

Back from Mr. Geissman's.  I had to perform major surgery on a track.  When this guy hired us to do this he provided midi tracks of the songs - they were pretty cheesy.  Grant has replaced the drums on them, and put in real guitars and other percussion and up until this morning that's been fine.  So I comped the vocal on Beyond The Sea and we played it back and the track just sounded so awful with that disgustingly unreal synth brass and synth guitar interfering with Grant's real guitar.  Grant didn't really want to do anything else (this guy did not pay us enough!), but I told him to at least get rid of the synth guitar and the synth brass.  He nuked those and suddenly the track could breathe and sounded almost normal.  I'd also suggested adding a pass of vibes - he didn't want to do it, but Grant always knows when I'm right and ten minutes later we added the vibes and now the track sounds normal and even good, like it was almost meant to be this way, kind of like the George Shearing Quintet sound.

I spent most of the afternoon watching TRANSFORMERS episodes. I got through 7 of them. (45 more to go.) I'm sure they're all going to be the same formulaic challenge-transform-fight scenario. The animation was done in Japan, and it's big and colorful and pretty impressive for small TV animation budgets.

I did stop long enough to skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke today (he was on yesterday with his mom; not sure if I even mentioned watching it). I had read that Luke and Noah were to be on tomorrow, but they weren't in the previews.

I plan to watch BURN NOTICE "live" tonight and record the other 10 p.m. shows. And I'll probably tire of TRANSFORMERS at some point and put in the penultimate BURN NOTICE episode from season one.

For anyone who'd like to preorder the new book but is having trouble, the other simple way to do it is to go to kritzerland.com and order Murder At Hollywood High - I'll know it's for the new book, so no worries there.  It's the same price so everything works exactly the same.

I just ordered the new book.  Can't wait!

Jane?

Good guess, DR Laura, but I suspect you know I meant MOI!  What's significant about it is that I haven't driven since June 10.  And our driveway, while not as long as Jane's, is very steep.  I was worn out by the time I got to the top.

I emptied the garage so that my sister can pull in to pick me up in about an hour.  She and her husband and my mom and I are going to the senior center up the street for dinner.  Then they're going to take me to a friend's house for book group.  Someone will give me a ride home, I'm sure!

re: BIG BROTHER 10

It's funny but i totally disagree with you on this.  And i don't even really like jessie at all. So i'm not saying this because i like him.

You are right that renny did apologize on the night in question. However i don't think jessie was intentionally lying. I really don't think he thought she apologized. Since she didn't really act like she was sorry (she did say the words) he probably didn't even remember she said it.

So you're saying you think he knew she apologized but intentionally tried to make her look bad?

I thought on the night in question that renny was shrieking like a loon. And it was obvious she thought she had done nothing wrong. It's funny but when i originally saw her pic before the show aired i thought she was so beautiful and that she would be so lovely! :)

To me i don't get why renny called him immature. He told her what she did that was wrong. I didn't feel he made a big deal out of it. It was only because that was the basis for jerry's noms, that the incident kept getting revisited.

Btw, i am surprised so many here seem to like those huge muscles. As i said i really find it unappealing.

I got five discs from Paramount today all stuffed in a canvas tote proclaiming "Welcome to the 80s." Inside were five DVD reissues of famous 80s films: FERRIS BEULER, PRETTY IN PINK, FOOTLOOSE, SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL, and TOP GUN. They come out August 5th along with a bunch of other Paramount 80s hits (FRIDAY THE 13th, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, etc.)

I've seen four of the five; never got around to SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL, but I guess I'll see it in the upcoming weeks.

Yes, It was the first night there and Renny was making a big noise while he was trying to sleep.  I was under the impression that he'd just gotten into bed, but it doesn't matter.  He got out of bed and told her she had awakened him.  She said, "Oh, I'm sorry.  Really, I'm sorry."  It sounded to me like she meant it.  That he either didn't accept it at that time, or was too wrapped up in his pity party to hear her, isn't much of an issue with me. HE is the reason this minor -- and never repeated -- incident got blown out of proportion.  He's a petulant little thing.

He went behind her back and dissed her to everyone in the house.  When she was nominated and Jerry said it was because they had some major disagreement, she was floored.  She didn't know what Jerry was talking about.  To her, it was over and done with, but Jessie had already blown it way out of proportion.

Did Jessie deliberately lie?  He may not "want" to remember that she apologized that very night, but the fact is that she did and she had no reason to believe -- and certainly no indication from him -- that anything was still hanging in the air.  Jessie just doesn't like her and he trashed her.  He may have gotten so caught up in his vindictiveness that her apology became non-existent in his mind.

I feel sorry for her.  She's annoying, but she's innocent of being insincere and she hasn't lied to anyone.

Forgive me, in advance:

This reminds me of an SNL moment many years ago.  When the show "The Waltons" was airing, actress Ellen Corby, who played Grandma Walton, had a stroke.  Her return to the show was heralded in all the TV press who indicated that she was "nearly" recovered but would continue in the role anyway.

SNL started one Saturday's show by proclaiming:  "On tonight's Episode of 'The Waltons' -- Grandma Walton ties her shoelaces."

I missed out on posting a recipe the other day, but for anyone who wondered what I made for the Dive-In Movie: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, it was fresh Georgia shrimp with roasted red pepper grits. (DerB, I was afraid to make the pie---I've never made a pie crust!)

Everyone else made vegetables, so it was the only "meat" dish. I found it on Epicurious, where they gave it 4 forks (95 % approval rating). It was pretty labor intensive, deveining all the shrimp and roasting and peeling the peppers, but it was deelish and everyone was fooled into thinking that I really know how to cook!

I didn't realize that not only was there a theme to the dishes, but there was also a theme to the guests...they were almost all lawyers!

Back in 1988 or so, I was asked to do a rewrite of a film script.  I was asked to do it on a computer in the Bay Cities office.  So, the guy who arranged the deal set me up at this computer with a black and white monitor.  He had two typewritten pages of command keys and macros that I had to follow.  It took me forever to get used to it and sometimes I'd forget to save and the thing would crash and I'd lose everything.  I hated it with a passion (at that time I was still writing everything on my beloved IBM Selectric).  After I finished, we printed the whole thing out - no other font available but the hard to read font on the computer, and it printed on that awful paper where you had to rip the sides off at the perforations.

I then refused to have anything to do with computers until Varese Sarabande.  The first thing they got me was some Word Processing typewriter with a little screen, but that was so lame it wasn't even funny.  Then I inherited a really old Mac from someone in the office - that put me off Macs for years, that ancient old piece of crap.  It would take ten minutes to connect to the Internet and once there, I hadn't a clew as to what to do.  Then I got a Compaq Presario - $799 all in.  That worked pretty okay and I was able to do a few things online, but not many.   I didn't know from newsgroups at all.  Then in 1998 or so I was given Web TV for my birthday.  Well, I became addicted (see my short story, Your Worst Nightmare in How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories - what - you don't have it - WHY NOT?).  That was how I discovered the Internet and eBay and the wonderful world of Usenet newsgroups.  I had that all the way until I got my first Toshiba laptop in 2000, which I replaced with a DELL in 2001.  And that did me until I stomped my Dell to death one fine day after I'd had it with the bloody thing.  I then asked the key question on this here site, and I'm sure it's all there in the posts and various notes - I said I was thinking of switching to a Mac and how hard would it be for me to unlearn the PC and get used to the Mac.  Some said it would be difficult and some said it would be easy, depending on how much I'd actually done on the Dell.  Someone specifically asked, "What do you do on the Dell?"  I said, "I know how to go on the Internet, and I know how to open and use a Word document - that is all."  They said get the Mac now.  I did, and I have never looked back - the Mac Powerbook and now MackBook Pro is the best thing ever to happen to computers.

Bryan & Craig's first computer was a TI 99.  I don't know what numbers followed.  It was designed for children, appropriate since they were 6 & 3 at the time we purchased it.

The name doesn't sound familiar - maybe if I saw a photograph...

Here's Mr. Patrick Richwood. Greg said he played the elevator operator in PRETTY WOMAN but I don't remember anything about that movie except not liking it very much.

Born and raised in Burbank, Patrick Richwood first appeared on the Colony Stage in Clutter, The True Story of the Collyer Brothers Who Never Threw Anything Out.
At 18, he was the youngest Pirate in the NY Shakespeare Festival's The Pirates of Penzance (Ahmanson Theatre, 1st National Tour, The White House). His theatre work here and in New York includes playing Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors (Heritage Arts Orpheum Theater), Goat in The Robber Bridegroom (Equity Library Theater), Mr. Church in What's a Nice Country Like You Doing in a State Like This? (American Place Theater), Treplev in The Seagull (A Noise Within), Leviticus in The Legend (Mark Taper Annex), Deputy in The Mystery of Edwin Drood (California Music Theater), Renfield in Dracula (Hermosa Beach Playhouse), Harlequin in Triumph of Love (Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera), and Ellard in The Foreigner (Olney Theatre, Maryland) for which he received the Helen Hayes Award.

Film work includes Beaches, Pretty Woman, Streets, Dear God, Little Sister, The Dark Side of Genius, Armageddon, The Other Sister, Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries, and The Race to Space. I just got the weirdest phone call. Apparently, our Johnny Mercer documentary is now going to be Executive Produced by Clint Eastwood. So now I'm sure I've ended my association with it. I am thrilled, however, and now it will definitely be finished---no fund raising necessary. (Half will come from Mr. Eastwood & half from the Mercer foundation.)

He and his producer/director are just finishing up a doc on my hero, Dave Brubeck. I can't wait to see that!

Well, after I had posted this morning, the resort's internet system went down again. Ah, well.  In the meantime...

I was picked up a little after 10:00, and after a brief stop at Starbucks for some much caffeine, we headed to Cape Canavarel to board the ship.  We had lunch, and then I had rehearsals with some of the performers who will be singing for tomorrow's master-class/workshop.  Some great talent, and a great variety of music.  A few of the performers are Canucks, and they brought in some music from some Canadian musicals, which, of course, now I shall have to get my hands on.  First The Drowsy Chaperone, and now... ;)

-And speaking of food...

Disney has recently began to offer more healthy alternatives in their various food service operations system-wide.  I noticed a lot more "roasted" and "baked" items on the various menus in the Parks yesterday, and the lunch today featured some pretty tasted roasted chicken and baked fish dishes.  Of course, once you hit the dessert table, well... ;)

-And speaking of food... Again...

Tonight, we were treated to dinner in Palo, Disney's fine-dining Italian restaurant.  I still have very fond memories of my dinner there on my last Disney cruise, and tonight's dinner did not disappoint either.  I started off with a Seafood Soup that had bits of scallops, shrimp and mussels in a perfectly seasoned tomato-based brother.  Then for my entree, I opted for the seared scallops served with borlotti beans and roasted tomatoes. And, for dessert, their Pineapple and Almond "Ravioli".  It's basically thin slices of pineapple, draped over a mound of almond mousse.  Then the whole affair is dusted with sugar, and caramelized.  YUM!

*And the dessert chef came up with a new gelato flavor combination: chocolate, espresso and caramel all in one.  Again, YUM!

**And the pinot noir that our host so kindly bought for the table... YUM!  :P

Well, I'm gonna go ahead, and see how much ketching up on the posts I can do offline since I need to save my internet minutes as much as I can.

They have a new "theme/dance party" a little later tonight, and there is one group dance section that features the Disney Theatre Performers, and I believe I shall check that out before heading to bed.

*And best of all, tomorrow's workshop is only from 10:00am-1:00pm.  And then I'm "off" for the rest of the cruise.  YEAH!

Saturday night there is a free concert version of SIDESHOW here at Morningside college.  Bill Russell, the book writer, graduated from Morningside, so he's coming here to do a free performance.  Think I'll try to go. What can anyone tell me about it - I know the story but don't know much about the musical

I love love love this musical.

I saw it on broadway with Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley.

At the time i didn't really know much about it. But i was totally blown away, especially by their performances.

It is a really good show (IMO) and i would definitely go if you can.

So I could begin and end my evening properly, I began my evening viewing with another episode of BURN NOTICE. This is actually the two-part season one finale, and I watched the first half of that - up to the point where someone important got killed. I'll finish the episode tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.

I then watched 9 episodes of TRANSFORMERS. That made 16 episodes watched today, and that leaves me with 36 more to watch.

It's serialized, and yet a child COULD sit down with any episode and be fairly into the story, especially if he went in knowing the identities of the Transformer Autobots et al.

But I will be glad to be done with this.

Nothing caught my attention long enough to make me stay on that channel.

Yesterday MATTH asked [I have a question. It's a bit personal, but since folks do talk about their health here, I figure it's OK.

Who here has had your appendix removed at some point in your life?

I haven't. In fact, the only operation I've ever had (so far) was at age five having my tonsils removed.

I had my appendix out when I was 10 - and my thyroid went when I was 32, but I still have my tonsils!

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember sharing that huge and heavy(!) Radio Shack/Tandy computer with the dual 5-1/4" disk drives.  -Strangely enough, the only thing I really remember about using that computer was a feature of the desk it sat on/in.  The instructions mentioned something neither my cousin and I had ever heard of, and we were not quite sure at the time what its function was: a modesty panel.

I believe the first home computer my family owned was a Commodore 64.  And then some computer we bought at Sears, a "fast" 256K deal.  ;)

During my first summer working at Coast Guard HQ, one of my duties was preparing records of enlisted personnel that had retired and/or died.  Once the documents were all gathered and collated, the last step was to process a punch card with their pertinent information before they got sent off to the storage facility in Kansas City.  We always had to be very careful when it came to entering the Social Security numbers of any deceased personnel since our records database was directly tied into the IRS and other government databases.  In other words, a slip of the finger could have "killed" someone.

Today I stopped at COSTCO on the way home to get some photos printed and to transfer images to a CD

since I had 30 miuntes to kill while the photolab lady did her thing I went for wander around the store

I found two lovely looking veal chops in the for $19.00... I have only had a veal chop once in my life and that was several months ago and it cost me dear in the purse... I decided to give it a try

(OK if you are morally opposed to Veal, I completely understand, however  I don't care to get into that discussion now... just skip the post)

ANYWAY....I also found some lovely fresh thin aparsagus

(OK if you are morally opposed to asparagus , I don't  understand at all , however  I don't care to get into that discussion now... just skip the post)

So I went home and did some experimental cooking.
(heaven fobid I should look in a cook book of which I seem to own several hundred)

It turned out that the Vixter had already decided to make her own dinner before I came home and wasn't hungry and the Vixdad had a late liunch and he wasn't hungry so I was cooking for one

I took the chops and put them in a littlle marinating tupperware thingie I own, and rubbed them with some Montreal Steak seasoning and poured a little sherry inthere and let it sit for about 90 minutes (inthe fridge)

then I heated up the grill , put a chop ina little metal roasting pan and popped it in the grill and closed the lid... then I washed and trimmed the asparugus, placed in on some aluminum foil, dizzeled a little olive oil on it and wrapped it up and plopped that on the grill.

about 5 miuntes later I truned the chop inteh pan, turned the aspargus  tin over and gave it another 5 minutes or so

what a lovely dinner it was delicious... I am sure it went far beyond the diet liits I should be adhering to however I only had some fresh strawberries and blueberries for breakfast and a small spinach salad with fat free dressing for lunch

I did not own a computer again until Vixdad brought one home in 1996.  About 6 months later I discoverd a group for mom's who had kiddies about to start nursery school and I chatted with those ladies until all of our kids were 4 th or 5th grader and then I drifted away

Re the language on Bullshit! - I used it very sparingly the first season (as did the other writers) and it worked much better and it was much funnier because it wasn't every other word.  I was actually surprised by the somewhat weak writing in this episode - it was much funnier when David and I and the producer were doing most of it.
