I'm sure you've read all about the ordeal - once our pilots got there, it was just another five minutes till we got on board, and for once everyone was motivated and took their seats quickly.  There were at least twenty empty seats on our completely sold out flight, which means twenty people gave up the ghost.

We took off very quickly, mostly because there were no planes at JFK.  Once airborne the flight was long but fine.  I couldn't sleep, so I watched a couple of TV shows, wrote the notes, and relaxed as best I could - as I did the other day, I had one one-ounce bag of chips, one one-ounce bag of cashews, and an almond/pistachio biscotti.  That plus my teeny-tiny "Italian" sandwich was my food intake for the day.

BK,

maybe you saw no rain at JFK, but there were thunderstorm watch blocks posted over Long Island for most all of the day - and that potential danger would preclude take-offs.

der Brucer

The weather channel had a running commentary on how the weather alerts were jamming up air travel all over the eastern seaboard. Also, the rules prohibit pilots from taking off if, on landing,  their total pilot hours would exceed their limit for the day.

Good morning, all! I'm happy to see that BK is back on terra firma and his day of travel hell is over.

I'm still in cell phone hell, but I've been getting lots of funny emails from friends with contact info. I can take several days to enter the information and send nice notes back to them.

Today, I just got a set of orchestra parts to look over from my copyist Jonathan, I need to call Kip in Hawaii about the new chart, I've got more BABES IN TOYLAND notes toi ammend and correct.

I want to see JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH in 3-D, so I may do that later in the afternon.

For the moment, the laundry is in the dryers and I after that, to work.

And, yes...

Just be thankful you don't normally have to fly through LAX, DFW, ORD, ATL, DEN or DTT on a regular basis.

Long Beach and Burbank are small(!!!!) airports, so their security screening lines will never be that long... even when they are "long".  Long Beach has eight gates, Burbank has 14 gates.  JFK has nine terminals, and 100+ gates.

*The security lines at ATL normally take anywhere from 45-60 minutes - and that's during the non-rush hour periods.

As others here have written....the "girls" seemed to be a bit too old for what they were supposed to have done.....when they done it.  Was Sophie born when Donna was 37?  Crazy, man!

I liked Meryl and Christine and Julie - and the guys were great....and it was nice to see MEN playing MEN rather than BOYS playing MEN.  Dominic Cooper was good.....but it was distracting that his nipples were almost under his arms.....I don't know how THAT happens.

And the girl playing SOPHIE didn't have enough room between her upper lip and her nose.....in the BIG CLOSE UPS it was very distracting....

But I digress.....I liked the music....the choreography was okay.....the scenery was pretty....the costumes were some of the UGLIEST stuff I have ever seen....and it was all so pretty onstage!

All in all, I enjoyed it.....wasn't disappointed....wouldn't see it again at the theatre, but I will probably buy the DVD.  Colin Firth takes the acting honors, such as they are.....

How did your spectacular go?

Actor/singer wise, pretty well, with the exception of few muffed lyrics.  For me, pure hell as the stupid lighting op kept turning off the special which was serving as my music light (they didn't want a clip light on the piano's music stand).  The first time it happened I gesticulated wildly to get someone to pay attention in the booth, which of course no one did, so I had to STAND UP, RUN OFF THE STAGE AND UP TO THE BOOTH to get their attention!  Can you believe it?  And then, incredibly, they did the same thing about 15 minutes later.  That time, one of the Board members in the audience saw what happened and ran back there themself.  The sheer stupidity of these people amazes me.  :)

Well....some of the steps are there.  I haven't seen a full run through of the number since DON doesn't know his dance yet....  I do know that I think it's a mistake for Don to come out into the audience during the song and inter act with them.....but I am merely a player in the production...not on the staff.   :P

Maybe you could improvise one night and go out into the audience yourself.  Invite some people on stage during the party scene, or just hand out an umbrella or two during the finale.

My car is now in the staff parking lot, where (usually) I'm allowed to park only after 5pm and on weekends.  However, since neither of my department's managers' spaces are occupied this week, I convinced their boss to let me use one of them.

The young man who helped me move my computer about a year ago just moved my car.  It's now about 20 paces from the door.

To jog or not to jog - that is the question.

Skipping a day is usually considered a good thing.  One day "on", one day "off".  It gives your muscles and the rest of your body time to rest and rebuild and grow.

Donna Bullock - star of many Forbidden Broadway entries.

This was one of the names that I was going to post.  She was also in one of my favorite Christmas musicals, The Gifts of the Magi (http://www.amazon.com/Gifts-Magi-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B000004CO5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1217270461&sr=1-1), with Eddie Korbich, Walter Charles and Scott Waara. :D

Back from a two-mile jog.  I weighed myself before I left, so with great trepidation I got on the scale to see if I'd maintened or had damage, although I doubted the latter, given the meals I had on my first and last days in NY.  Well, since Thursday I am the proud loser of FOUR count them FOUR pounds.  Hoo and ray, baby.  The total lost is now seven-and-a-half pounds - slow going but I think my body is now in the "lose" mode - my metabolic rate has definitely changed and so perhaps in the next couple of weeks I'll lose another four or five pounds.

BK,

the rules prohibit pilots from taking off if, on landing,  their total pilot hours would exceed their limit for the day.

We had this happen to us years ago, the entire crew was pulled off and we had to wait for a new one.  This of course was due to a long delay.  Waiting for the new crew extended our delay another hour or two.

Back from a yummilicious lunch at The Kansas City Barbecue - I had a half-rack of baby back ribs - five in total.  Not all that much meat on them, so although I'm quite full, I think I'm fine.  No bread, but a little thing of coleslaw and a little thing of their incredible baked beans.  And that was my meal o' the day.  As I was finishing, five men came in, obviously newbies to the jernt and they had a coupon for one free sandwich with the purchase of a similar sandwich.  The first guy orders the burnt ends sandwich.  The second guy orders the burnt ends sandwich.  The third guy orders the burnt ends sandwich.  The fourth guy orders the burnt ends sandwich.  And the fifth guy, just to be contrary, orders the burnt ends sandwich.  It was all very amusing.

I began my afternoon by watching the one hour PBS documentary on Muhammad Ali's years in Miami, basically 1960-1968. Having lived through this and with my father being a devout fan of Clay/Ali, most of this was old news to me, but I was surprised about the relationship/falling out between Ali and Malcolm X.

The documentary only ran 54 minutes.

These are very large compared to our Medford International Airport.  Our security lines are usually short.  A somewhat long line can be 20 minutes.  We rarely have 45 minute lines.

Back from a 3-D amusement park ride. I had a wonderful time, loved the cast - didn't recognize the actress playing Hanna as Jane Seymour on THE TUDORS at all - and loved the scary moments: the carnivorous plants, the tyrannosaurus, the ferocious prehistoric fish, and the pleisiosaurs.  The special effects look great in 3-D and I can't imagine the film being nearly as much fun in 2-D. There's just enough sentment and just enough humor to keep the three principals on the run from everything, and some it is quite funny. I doubt it was any more cheesy than the Pat Boone version from the early 1960s, and the dinosaurs here are much better. I did miss Bernard Herrmann's score, though.

DR elmore, thank you for the movie report.  I'm not sure Keith's eyes are up to that yet, maybe next week.  I think it would be best to see this at the big screen.  Did you get to keep your 3-D glasses or did you have to return them?  How will that work if we end up renting from NetFlix. ;D

Good Evening!

I'm back from MoMA... :)

I did do the Dali exhibit again, mainly concentrating on the "Spellbound" and "Destino" galleries.  It was a bit crowded today, but most of the crowding seemed to be in the first and last gallery of the exhibit - the entrance and the exit.

I also checked out the dual exhibition/installation, Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=5476).  Quite informative and enlightening.  And the model houses they have set up in their outside lot were very cool - for lack of a better adjective right now.

Nursie, see it in 3-D! There are too many 3-D effects for it to be a real disappointment in 2-D. No one tried to stop me after the film so I kept my glasses. See it in a theatre on a big screen, not on a tv. Some of the scenes are quite beautifully designed and I loved the birds which are quite a magic moment when they arrive.

At the entrance to "Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling" they have set up a small movie screen where they are showing Buster Keaton's "One Week".  It's basically about a wedding gift - a pre-fab house - gone awry.

It was quite heartening and, in a ways, inspiring, hearing people genuinely laughing at the on-screen antics.  There was an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair - not DR TCB - who was laughing up a storm... And making everyone around him laugh and smile too.  :)

When I saw "Meet the Robinsons" in 3-D, we got to keep the glasses.  When we went in to see the movie, everyone had to show that they had the glasses AND show their ticket.  I took off the glasses at one point and what was being projected was totally scrambled.  You couldn't make out anything without the glasses.  When it came out on DVD, it wasn't available in 3-D. :P

I also checked out some of the painting and sculpture galleries on the fifth and fourth floors.  I swear, the folks at MoMA must switch out parts of their collection on a weekly basis.  There were a few pieces I had never seen before, as well some pieces regrouped with other pieces for special "Focus" mini-exhibits.

*I decided to take a couple of pics of some of my favorites, but I just wanted to take pictures of sections of them - sort of like an excerpt or study.  Alas, more than once, I had a guard come up to me, "Excuse me, Sir.  You're too close to the art."  After the third or fourth time, I was starting to think they had passed the word around that a "close-looker" was in the galleries, and would not have been surprised if I had been asked to leave.  Thankfully, I was not asked to leave.  -However, I did notice other museum-goers touching some of the architectural models, feeling the ridges on one of the Jackson Pollock paintings, and taking pictures in the "No Cameras" zone with nary a reprimand from anyone...  Except me, of course. ;)

I would have stayed out a bit longer this afternoon, but I could really feel my blood sugar starting to drop and my tummy starting to rumble.  So, I headed on back home...  However, on the train ride back uptown, I developed a craving for some chili... And since there's a supermarket right at the exit of my subway stop, well...

After combining and cooking up a pound of ground turkey, a can of diced green chiles, a can of black beans, a can of corn kernels, a large can of crushed tomatoes, a diced onion, three gloves of garlic (finely minced - and they were large(!) cloves), some cumin (added in stages), some chili powder (added in stages), some oregano (added in stages), black pepper, red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and salt - oh, and a dash of cinnamon (for a "Greek/Cincinatti" touch)...  Dinner!  YUM!!!

We had this happen to us years ago, the entire crew was pulled off and we had to wait for a new one.  This of course was due to a long delay.  Waiting for the new crew extended our delay another hour or two.
I had this happen to me many years ago on a TRAIN!  The engineer's hours ran out (due to a crash on the Grapevine which held up connecting busses converging on Bakersfield), and we had to wait for several more hours at a tiny station somewhere between Bakersfield and Fresno.  A most unpleasant experience.

Especially after someone decided to trash the bathrooms.   :P

After seeing some of these men in their bulging(?) leisure suits, I am beginning to think that there may still be a show biz career for me - if I move to India.

Well... I was thinking of heading to Splash tonight for Musical Mondays since the [title of show] folks will be appearing there tonight.  However, the "Spotlight Series" shows don't begin until 11:30 - which usually ends up being midnight.  And since I still have a bit of a sinus headache, I'm sure that the loud music would not do me any good... And since I'm playing auditions tomorrow (and Wednesday and Thursday), well...

*The "Time Machine" episode of "Big Bang Theory" was good!  :)

DATELINE tonight in its series of great videotaped rescues is showing the 12th floor fire rescue in the building at 7th and 48th when I was working there for the Drama Book Shop. I wonder if they'll show us employees outside wondering if we would have a job.

I do, too, and have never been able to find out what happened to him. He was in a wheelchair the last time we saw him; I think he'd had foot surgery.

I do like the new guy, though. I also liked the very stern Asian ME, even though we only saw her for one episode (ably assisted by Terrence!).

Don Buddin----major league shortstop.

Thank you TCB.  I thought I would conspicuously have to carry the sports load by myself.
Whenever Bruce and I would play the game in the car, and I would bring up a sports figure, he would always grimace contemptuously.  Except for the occasional West-Coast pro wrestler from his youth.  But then, you could hardly call pro wrestling an actual sport.
Of course, whenever he'd bring up his umpteenth obscure film composer or choreographer, or foreign film director, I would accept it with my usual good graces. I was hoping there would be someone on this board to lend credence to all my sports posts.  Perhaps, TCB, you are the one.

I do, too, and have never been able to find out what happened to him. He was in a wheelchair the last time we saw him; I think he'd had foot surgery.

I do like the new guy, though. I also liked the very stern Asian ME, even though we only saw her for one episode (ably assisted by Terrence!).

I much prefer the new guy. He can be prickly, but I like the vibe he has with Brenda and the squad.

I began my evening with two WILL & GRACE episodes so I could finish out the box set.

The first had FOUR guest stars: Alec Baldwin, Eric Stolz, Leslie Jordan, and Seth Green. Green was very funny, a former child star still acting the spoiled diva. Just wonderful.

And then the season finale when we found out that Stan was still alive. Quite a cliffhanger.

I had time enough to watch a CLOSER episode from Season 2, the two part season ender with William Daniels, James Carpinello, and Paul Schulze. I finished it and started on the second half of that two parter which I'll finish tomorrow as I cook and eat lunch.

BONES repeated the episode about the head college basketball player which had originally been produced for the previous season and then put on the shelf after the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Three new scenes had to be shot to cover scenes deleted that focused on the Hodgins-Angela romance.

Good mystery.

THE CLOSER's episode tonight was very entertaining. Commander Taylor needing help and Brenda obliging. That relationship has certainly evolved over four seasons!

Daniel Baldwin gave a very intense performance.

And I ended my evening with last night's LAW & ORDER: CI. As DR Elmore said, it was a good episode. I really enjoyed it with guest stars Miguel Ferrer and Tony Roberts, among others.

(to the tune of "I've never been to me")

I've seen the Louvre
And my photos prove
That I've toured the Champs Elysees
Learned to kvell
Seeing Saint-Chapelle
And then Notre Dame that same day

Oh, I Spent an hour
At the Eiffel Tower
Ate a big baguette with some brie
Hey lady, I've been to Paris Sights
But I've never been to me-ee-ee-ee-ee

I've been to Paris Sights
But I've never been to me.

Cilla, did you finish Kritzer Time?

I could use major vibeage for the next two days.  Tomorrow there are a number of key witnesses.  I think I'm ready, but this is the ball game. I believe the state will conclude their case tomorrow. If they do it soon enough then I will put on my case.  If not, we'll finish up Wednesday morning and it will go to the jury that day.

Cilla, did you finish Kritzer Time?

Actually I think I have about 2 chapters left. I'm in total crunch time on the murder trial and although I intended to finish over the weekend, just couldn't do it.  I am loving it though.

I think the trial will go to the jury on Wednesday.  The next two days are the crucial days for my defense. It's the state's star witnesses and my case, then closings.

Bottom line, I will finish Kritzer Time by the end of the week
