Well, you've read the notes, the notes moved under your feet, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently listening to the news reports and shaking their collective cow heads in disbelief.
-
And the word of the day is: SESQUIPEDALIAN!
-
No one in the jernt but me - well, me and these fourteen GUESTS.
-
Given the title of the day's notes, I wonder what are the DR's favourite songs written by Carole King.
My own favourites are "Going Back" and "Hard Rock Cafe".
-
Opposite of word of the day would be almost any song written by the Bee Gees. "Words" is a good example!
-
Good morning, DRs.
That is all.
-
ASK BK DAY
What is doing with the movie that you worked on 4(?) ago...The Dangerous Love of Johnny X?
-
Slow day here at HHW
-
It's gonna be another hot day (110 in the Shade)
-
I can't single handedly take us to Page 2
-
Can I?
-
It's 7:47am in New York and I need to post 19 more replys before we get to Page 2.
Ain't gonna happen.
-
Because I must leave now to re-fill my water jug and wash my bowl.
-
In Arnold's absence, in honor of the word of the day - SESQUIPEDALIAN - I'm sure Arnold would have picked Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and company singing the great Sherman Brothers' song about "the biggest word you ever heard":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neCx_k2koaY
Here are some little kids doing a cute dance routine to the song.

On the subject of earthquakes:
I've withstood a couple of very memorable quakes, including the deadly Northridge one back in 1993 (?). That one damaged my condo so badly that I had to move out for almost 3 months while they repaired it.
Thank God for earthquake insurance.
The other quake that sticks in my memory was the deadly Seattle quake of 1948. I'll never forget that one.
I was 7-years old, home from school because I was ill. I was sitting on our living room couch, reading a Tom Mix comic book, when the house started to shake...BIG TIME. In fact, when it was over, our neighbor's chiminey was in our front yard.
Hopefully, I'll have moved to Texas by the time the "big one" hits California.
:)
-
Well, after dinner last night, we both crashed at about 6:30 p.m. and did not move or wake up till 6:00 a.m. this morning! Lord, I haven't slept like that in ages. I guess we was tired! :)
I'm trying to remember all the questions from the previous day to answer. Jet Blue honestly did not try very hard to help us. The gal that we got to was very bland and did her very least to do anything. We did pay a pretty high amount for our airfare, it was definitely NOT cheap. On the way to New York, it went pretty well actually. We did have our own little TV for viewing purposes.
We even asked about flying to California or Seattle and getting a connecting flight from there. They said they "didn't have relationships with other airlines so could not check with them for us." We would have to check that on our own. We finally just got a refund and went to United and they were VERY helpful and felt truly bad for us and went overboard to help us out.
I am afraid, dear friend JMK, I did not get the Levain cookies. I will await your wrath when I see you in the fall. :) Since I had a bum ankle it was hard to get around, and by the time I remembered, it was the last day (the first time we left) that we were suppose to fly out. I asked the concierge how far it was from the hotel and it was like 1.6 miles and I knew I couldn't walk it and sis was out all day while I was trying to recup with ankle at hotel. They didn't deliver either to hotel. I did get a phone number in my purse somewhere where you can have them mail ordered. I'm really sorry. I really wanted to get there myself.
The 2 day lay over we had we weren't anywhere close to Levain's at all.
-
Almost seeming to sound like Jet Blue is really really great when things go smoothly, but various reports seem to suggest that if there's a weather situation or some other abnormality they're less reliable than some other airlines. (Of course, i did have a snafu with my otherwise beloved Continental in late 2006, so who knows?)
-
Wednesday morning greetings! Another work day - they're getting easier and easier, but I'm still pretty tired when I get home in the evenings. On my way home tonight, I have to stop at Lowe's to get a bamboo plant for the Olympics book display.
-
Almost seeming to sound like Jet Blue is really really great when things go smoothly, but various reports seem to suggest that if there's a weather situation or some other abnormality they're less reliable than some other airlines...
Exactly! That's exactly what we think as well.
-
DR JulieC40 - Sorry to hear about the downsides to your NYC trip. Now, tell us about the upsides! Hope you were able to have some fun!
-
Good morning, all! I've been sleepong very poorly because of the neurological problems in my right shoulder so I took a Tylenol PM. I slept for about seven hours straight and then dozed off again from around 6 to 9 am. I slept a lot but I'm a bit groggy for the nonce.
Today, now that I'm finished with the 42nd Street Library, I'm back to Lincoln Center and the Theatre Collection, which I much prefer.
-
Good morning!
Another warm, muggy morning and highs today getting to 92. I know we'll be in August in a couple of days (no way!), but this kind of warm mugginess will likely continue for a couple of months unless we get an early fall.
-
Tonight on TV:
PROJECT RUNWAY!
-
Today I'll be working on an MTV made-for-cable movie called AMERICAN MALL. I sounds like a HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL kind of show, so it should be pleasant if it's competent at all. There are a good many bonuses on the disc, so they will also take some time to get through.
The movie premieres on MTV on August 11th, and the DVD will be available the next day.
-
And, of course, I'll be continuing to watch THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH when I go down to cook lunch. It's long, so I may not get all the way through it before I have to start up AMERICAN MALL.
-
Welcome to DR britnisex, our newest "forum member" (computer-generated, most likely). :)

Given the title of the day's notes, I wonder what are the DR's favourite songs written by Carole King.
My own favourites are "Going Back" and "Hard Rock Cafe".
Apropos of today's subject, I offer "All Shook Up"! ;D
As to DR Tomovoz's queston: "You've Got A Friend".
-
Exactly! That's exactly what we think as well.
You should let Jet Blue "know about your experience". Write the corporate headquarters.
Who knows...you might get a comp ticket out of it!
-
Another song title for today's subject:
"Shake, Shake, Shake (Shake your Booty)!"
-
I see seven other members lurking. When I logged on, there were nine.
Strange to still be on Page 1.

Just a quick hi, hello, and howdy to all those who might remember me from way-back-when. Been a wee bit busy, but had a few minutes during an interminable training session to do a quick browsing session.
I'll be hopefully posting a bit more frequently in the future.

Good Morning; good day. How are we this beautiful day?
Personally I'm tired from waking up 50 times last night. At about 2 AM, I decided the population in my hallway needed to be straightened and rehung. So I hammered for about an hour. Many of you are now hung again.
-
I also washed my tea-ball again. I feel so much better now.

What was interesting was watching Jessie in action. I've never seen a houseguest so full of himself. He "knows" a lot of words and expressions, but he doesn't have the knack of using them well.
To hear him go on and on about how no one in the house could beat him at a physical OR mental game was hilarious. Ego is a good thing, but there has to be some sort of "reality check" in each ego that pulls a person back from making a pure-tee fool of himself. Jessie must have turned his off before entering the house.
I don't like Libra any more than anyone else does, but she's being unjustly vilified by Jessie's attempts to save himself. I'm hoping that if Angie goes and Jessie stays that Libra wins HOH. I can't think of any higher drama that would ensue to see Jessie on the block again at the hands of Libra. ;D
I never saw what that banner said and I'm not certain if Memphis was telling the truth or not. Everyone said they would pretend it was about Libra, and I'm wondering if he's lying about it. If so, I'm disappointed. I'd read that the banner was not related to the show at all, but that may have been some viewer's perception rather than fact.
Oh, well. What will be, will be. I'm amazed at how well Keesha is holding herself up given all the Jessie-attacks and visits from the "other" alliance members. I'll be looking forward to the outcome Thursday night...and the fallout afterward! :) Dhhjejh ahjh fjhlkh rhjfqhrkljh jhj dhjsjhdjhlk hajh lkhalkjhakfjh lkjhlkadhfjh dflkjh laksjdhf lkjahlkajhfalkjhflkajhf,

Hello, Elan-daddy! Hope your family is well and that you are enjoying all the facets of fatherhood! :)

I also washed my tea-ball again. I feel so much better now.
I thought I felt the earth do a little shimmy and then settle into its axis! Glad you're feeling better!

The fog layer is again thick over the Bay Area. Very cool temps. This is the kind of "summer" I like. Cool nights and mornings, with a nice burn-off in the afternoon and a moderate warm-up before the fog comes in again in the early evening.
-
I've been listening to Victor Herbert's SWEETHEARTS with Judy Kaye this morning. I think "Jeannette and Her Wooden Shoes" is one of the funniest songs ever:
Clippety clop-clop Clippety clop-clop over the tiles
Her feet were petite but you heard her for miles
And speaking of Mr Herbert, it's time to approach Lincoln Center.
Has anyone seen anything asbout the rumor that the new rewritten version of BRIGADOON has been cancelled? I heard the story yesterday, someone posted it on Broadwayworld.com, but I can find no verification.
-
re: Today's subject line:
"Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop"!
(I used to think it was "Shimmy Shimmy Cocoa Pop!", because of the cereal "Cocoa Pops").

Well, I will head on downstairs to see if any mail comes my way today after a disappointing NOTHING yesterday. Then, I'll start preparing lunch.
WBBL.

Aside from "Big Brother 10", I watched a program I'd recorded on my DVR over the weekend but then totally forgot about.
It was an IMAX film called "Kilimanjaro" and it's about a group of folks being guided to the summit of this fabulous mountain/volcano. Included in the group were a geologist, a 13-year-old girl and her dad (her mother was part of the technical crew behind the scenes), an English woman in her late 60s or early 70s, and a young woman from Denmark. It was quite spectacular in high def, and it was most amazing as the mountain is in Tanzania at the equator, yet there has been snow on its peaks for tens of thousands of years.
The journey started at the base -- actually, in mud in a rain forest that surrounds the base of the mountain. This was the "equatorial" climate. As the climbers ascended, they experienced something akin to walking from the equator to the arctic in just over a week's time. There were interesting examples of amazing plants that have adapted over the aeons to the climactic extremes -- brutal cold at night and tropical heat during the day.
At a point when they attained the "alpine desert" region, just under the "arctic" level, they encountered the bones of an elephant! What, they wondered, could have led an elephant up that high, and over such a treacherous landscape? The narrator was either their guide or someone speaking for him, but he said that he had also encountered the bones of antelope and a leopard, all at the same level.
The fabled "snows" of Kilimanjaro are actually a glacier formed during the last ice age. Once, the summit of the mountain would have been unattainable as the glacier could not have been breached. The first time anyone ever managed to get to the top was in the 1800s. Some have attempted and failed. Some have died. One of the problems encountered is altitude sickness. At 16,000 feet, there is only half the oxygen that there is at sea level. The key to survival is to go easy. Don't rush the process. This group took longer climbing the final 4,000 feet than they took for the first 16,000 feet.
The glacier is disappearing, but it's not melting. Through a process of sublimation (I think that's what it was called), the ice disappears as it vaporizes. This has been going on for thousands of years. One day, the snows will be gone. And, of course, one day the snows will return with a new ice age...thousands of years from now.
The photography was stunning, the music score by Alan Williams was John Barry-esque, and the actual attainment of the summit by all the climbers -- youngest to oldest -- was rather exhilarating.
If any of you have an opportunity to see this program, I highly recommend it.
-
Nice to see DR ELAN around for a tick.
-
Well, of course, we had a great time while we were there! The airline was just an ending snafu.
We went to see Gypsy on Wednesday afternoon and then saw Xanadu that night. Our seats for Gypsy was in the 2nd row from the front and talk about really close! Patti even made eye contact with us and probably everyone in the first 2 rows. She was amazing!! Plus everyone else in the cast as well. Top notch performances by all! The acting and music was fantastic! For Xanadu, we had stage seating! That was incredibly fun! The cast included the audience on stage in their performance. My sis, the actress, had her "moment." One of the cast put a see through scarf over her face and she did a wonderful take and everyone laughed in the audience. After the show, we did get autographs, including Tony Roberts and Kerry Butler. Also, was able to get a picture of my sis and Kerry together! Had so much fun!
-
DR FJL thanks for the dance recital clip...my guess is that's a rehearsal since the girls weren't wearing matching costumes....but please remember that that little routine cost each parent about $400 - 50 weekly lessons at $7 each + tap shoes $25 + costume $25. Those flap ball changes come dear.
-
Glad to hear you had such a good time DR JULIEC40....
-
a disappointing NOTHING
Mr. Karp would not be pleased.
-
My question for ASK BK day - what is the biggest or most exciting Thrift Shopping bargain you have ever found?
-
Mr. Karp would not be pleased.
Good morning, DR dropcloth!
-
Has anyone who has gone to New York City had any chance of seeing "South Pacific"?
-
I felt nothing.
-
That Jet Blue experience sounds horrific.
I just don't get that they did nothing to try to get you another flight. They just expected you to stay in NYC for a week at your own expense?
I would also write a letter. That is ridiculous.
-
Good morning, DR Ron Pulliam!
I think the only hope of seeing South Pacific in the near future is chancing the cancellation lines.
-
On tv for me tonight:
No Big Brother.
So You think you can dance!
-
I've spent my morning processing new books for the nonprofit collection that came in while I was away. In the introduction to one of them, among the acknowledgements, is none other than our very own DR Ben!
-
I felt nothing.
And how did nothing feel about being felt?
-
Hi, Ben1
-
When I was recuperating from the sprained ankle on Thursday, sis went to see "A Catered Affair." She says that it was a nice little show but it seemed to be missing a certain something. It could have been a great show. It was well performed. Faith Prince was exceptional as was Mr. Fierstein.
Then on Saturday afternoon, we saw August: Osage County and we happened to sit by David Church who wrote Judy's Scary Little Christmas (yes, I know, I'm a name-dropper). This production was done here in Portland, Oregon, at our own Triangle Theatre.
August: Osage County was a masterpiece; really intense and extremely well done. The acting was phenomenal. It is definitely one of those that will stick with both of us forever. PDXJane says it will be one that will be known for years to come.
Then that night (Saturday) we saw The 39 Steps with Sam Robards. We really enjoyed it. It was really fun! Very comical; loved the tongue-in-cheek humor!

I thought that jessie's first "discussion" last night seemed reasonable. HE tried to say what was what. But his other rant was unbearable. I mean he really was going crazy. I really hope they give him the boot. Why would he go off on keesha like that?
I am curious what you guys think about the america's player twist and who will/should win?
I don't really like libra that much. but i do feel like she would be loyal to keesha. and for now she is annoying me less.
Heck i'm even starting to like renny since she has toned herself down and become friends with my fav keesha.

I would also write a letter. That is ridiculous.
Since my sister is the writer of the family, as well as the actress, she is definitely going to be writing a letter, I assure you!
-
You ALL make the earth move for me! :P
-
I goofed it was James Webber, not David Church, we sat next to. I just happened to find a picture of the two and it was definitely James. Sorry, my bad!
-
You ALL make the earth move for me!
Is that before or after we all went "straight"? ;)
-
re: last night's BIG BROTHER show
What did you guys think of the veto comp?
I actually liked it and thought it was original. Even if it did sort of backfire. :)

ASK BK DAY
What is doing with the movie that you worked on 4(?) ago...The Dangerous Love of Johnny X?
Who knows. Every eight months or so the director sends the cast an e-mail saying he's definitely resuming shooting and finishing the film, then nothing happens. He simply went into it without all the money, and you never ever do that on a film.
-
And how did nothing feel about being felt?
That response was not recorded. 8)
-
My question for ASK BK day - what is the biggest or most exciting Thrift Shopping bargain you have ever found?
I've heard so many tales of finding great things in thrift shops, and way back in the late 70s and all through the 80s I made regular runs to several to find all those goodies - and in all that time I never found one exciting thing or bargain.
-
Oh, and I'm up. Barely.
-
This is way cute:
Libraries Are Gonna Make It After All (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-fqpY97S0xU)

Hello, Elan-daddy! Hope your family is well and that you are enjoying all the facets of fatherhood! :)
Hey, Ron! Thanks for the good wishes!
Fatherhood, currently, has only three facets: sheer joy, sheer panic, and sheer exhaustion... Of course, it gets easier as they get older, right?
.
.
.
.
Right?
-
DR ELAN - can you still hold both them babies on your lap at the same time?
-
Good morning fellow Dear Readers. I had my 1.5 hour hike and then did some yard work. (Don't tell my DH that I hauled his precious junk out to the alley.) It is getting warm outside.
-
Hey, Ron! Thanks for the good wishes!
Fatherhood, currently, has only three facets: sheer joy, sheer panic, and sheer exhaustion... Of course, it gets easier as they get older, right?
.
.
.
.
Right?
Yeah.....sure.....keep thinking that. ;)
-
OMG - if anyone hauled away my precious junk I would be crushed....in about ten months when I realized it was gone.
-
I am so sorry that MR BK hasn't found any treasures. I would think LA would be a goldmine....but then I am sure we all have our own definition of treasures and trash.
-
OMG - if anyone hauled away my precious junk I would be crushed....in about ten months when I realized it was gone.
Ten months? I don't think he'd notice it in five years.
-
...but then I am sure we all have our own definition of treasures and trash.
Sometimes for the same things.
-
Nice to see ya, Elan! Enjoy those bundles of joy!
-
DR ELAN - can you still hold both them babies on your lap at the same time?
Yep, although the older one is nearing his third birthday, so the appelation "baby" is getting less and less appropriate.
-
...
Fatherhood, currently, has only three facets: sheer joy, sheer panic, and sheer exhaustion... Of course, it gets easier as they get older, right?
.
.
.
.
Right?
Yeah, right, DR Elan. As they get older different things will bring you joy, different things will cause you to panic, and, at least until they start driving, you might eventually get to sleep through the night.
-
It gets easier, Elan. When they can talk and reason. Of course, then they can reason and argue and manipulate.
School-age is the easiest. Except for the homework.
But enjoy every phase of their development! They grow up fast!
-
I say we all give Elan our child-raising tips.
-
1. Turn of the tv and go outside.
2. Don't feed them at McDonalds.
3. Never give in to a tantrum.
-
Question of the day to everyone: Do you have any child-raising tips for Elan?
(There, that makes it official)
-
We saw a lot of previews Sunday when we saw MAMMA MIA! and there was one want to see:
READ THEN BURN - with Clooney, Pitt, McDormand from the Coen Brothers
The trailer was very well done.
Then we saw a traveling shot of the ocean waves and the music from CHARIOTS OF FIRE started playing and then a little white puppy started running along the beach...it was a sweet moment. The movie is MARLEY AND ME, I think....but it has Jennifer Anniston so I probably will skip it.
There was a sports movie about the first black college football player to do something and overcome everything and be the best and get encouraged by his coach....about the guy who invented the intermittent windshield wiper which was stolen by Ford Motor Co...
I don't know.....maybe something will be good..... I guess I can't say they aren't trying! And sometimes I am surprised that I like a movie....
Oh and High School Musical 3 - is it really as horrible as this preview seems to make it out to be?
-
Maybe he won't want them.
-
Child raising tip from someone without children:
Always have good music playing in the house.
-
Ten months? I don't think he'd notice it in five years.
That's about right. ;D Unless it's something I use once a year....then I would notice by December. 8)
-
Maybe he won't want them.
It's too late, baby, now it's too late.
A Carole King reference. ;D
-
DR JMK do you have any photos or reviews from your Mel's Diner Revue?
-
It gets easier, Elan. When they can talk and reason. Of course, then they can reason and argue and manipulate.
School-age is the easiest. Except for the homework.
But enjoy every phase of their development! They grow up fast!
Well, the big little one is talking, talking, and talking some more (which for those who know me and The Lovely Wife[tm] comes as a huge shock, I assure you). And the little little one is more than capable of arguing and manipulating without being verbal.
Of course, I'm capable of getting back by posting cute photos online but I'd never do that, now, would I?
Okay, maybe I would...
Call off the DNA test... he's my kid, alright!
-
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
-
1. Turn of the tv and go outside.
2. Don't feed them at McDonalds.
3. Never give in to a tantrum.
We're in pretty good shape here with that:
1) No TV in the house (of course, the older one can watch Barney the purple abomination at his grandparents', but that's another story)
2) Until McDonald's gets kosher certification, I won't be worrying too much. Pizza is about as junky as the junk meals get around us
3) Um... well, er, two out of three ain't too bad, right?
-
Well, I have to say I believe that is our first on-the-pot photo posted here!
-
Just remember, as soon as they learn that throwing a fit works.....
-
Well, I have to say I believe that is our first on-the-pot photo posted here!
Although probably not our first posting from someone on pot... (bah-dum-bum-BOOM!)
-
4. Make it your policy (with your wife) that you never buy toys when you are out shopping with the children. Toys are only purchased when the children are along if they are a gift for another child. It really cuts down on the tantrums when they know you WILL NOT buy toys for them when they are along.
-
My son made me promise the other day that if he ever has kids I am never to take them to McDonalds. Ever.
I made him promise me that if he ever has kids that they are never to be left in the car unattended. Ever.
-
Just remember, as soon as they learn that throwing a fit works.....
Ah, they learn that already from watching their mother...
(I kid! I kid! *ducks flying kitchenware*)
-
I think breaking news should always be reported by an on the pot dispatch.
-
Question of the day to everyone: Do you have any child-raising tips for Elan?
(There, that makes it official)
Remember this truth: (If you) Spare the Rod (you'll ) Spoil the Child!
Kids need discipline.
The rest of the world will LOVE YOU for it, and your kids will likely respect you and cherish you for it, especially when they encounter all the spoiled brats running around out there.
-
BK has a thread going at FilmScoreMonthly Messageboard about his upcoming "mystery" release.
If JRand's excellent guess was correct about what the title is, then the guesses at FSM are highly amusing and kind of strange, IMO.
I've seen folks suddenly verbally drooling over stuff I never read anyone "wanting" before.
And if Jrand is correct, no one, last I looked, has even named the composer of the upcoming score in all the wild guesses that have been flying.
-
Of course, I'm capable of getting back by posting cute photos online but I'd never do that, now, would I?

And is that where he picked up the "reading-on-the-throne" idea? ;D
-
Well, I have to say I believe that is our first on-the-pot photo posted here!
I wonder if it will start a trend that Hainsie/Kimlets will follow. Will we soon see photos of others here on the pot?

Although probably not our first posting from someone on pot... (bah-dum-bum-BOOM!)
Don't ask....don't smell...!

re: last night's BIG BROTHER show
What did you guys think of the veto comp?
I actually liked it and thought it was original. Even if it did sort of backfire. :)
Loved it! I thought I had remembered incorrectly about who won it, but it was great to see how it all turned out. I think the interruptions with the worms and the composted materials threw some of them way off in their "mental" ticking-off of time.
Memphis seemed to have the best plan, but he must have been counting too slowly.
And did you notice: Just as in the HOH competition, Keesha won not by being right when it counted, but by everyone else being wrong. She beat Keesha when Keesha answered incorrectly in HOH, and she won the veto handily by being the only one to get out before time was up. The look of concentration on Jessie's and Memphis' faces was priceless. They both wanted to win, but neither is a good judge of how much time goes by. If either of them had gotten out when the compost was added, they'd have won.
-
We went out to dinner last night so we could say we ate out in 3 major metropolitan cities in the USA in 24 hours! *lol*
(1) Il Palazzo (Little Italy) New York
(2) Restaurant in San Francisco airport, can't remember name but great Fish & Chips and it came with wonderful Fisherman's Wharf sourdough bread!
(3) Mandarin Palace, Beaverton, Oregon (my fave chinese place)
-
I say we all give Elan our child-raising tips.
1. Read with them as well as to them - I think it's especially important for boys to see male role models reading.
2. Keep them on a tether (figuratively-speaking) - and let it out to its fullest length
3. Choose your battles
-
Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I've been for a while. Just haven't had a chance to post until now. So...
-And our lunch break is almost over.... But we're only seeing one more person after lunch, so....
-
DR elmore - The "postponement" of Brigadoon is now official.
-
I hate to leave such wonderful company, but I have to locate a couple of wigs - go over my lines AGAIN....and prepare for REHEARSAL.
Oh and find my collar extender.
-
Jose - Have you had a chance to ask if they're willing to look at a script? Nudge, nudge. :)
-
BRIGADOON spelled backwards is NOODAGIRB.
-
Or was that a different day?

BK: I think it's sad, but true, that most of the folks guessing probably have never seen the film or never knew there was an LP of its score.
What amazes me is that I've not seen the composer's name mentioned once in that thread (if, of course, JRand's guess was correct).

Well, fortunately, we were able to find a hotel for 2 nights through AAA. They were a huge help! We stayed at the Gem Hotel on Houston between E. 1st and 2nd. Right next door was a Jewish bakery that had wonderful blueberry knish's - oh, Lord, we thought we had died and gone to heaven. I did find a bakery here in Portland that people from the East coast say is not as good as NY but it comes to a close second. I want to find that place!

4. Make it your policy (with your wife) that you never buy toys when you are out shopping with the children. Toys are only purchased when the children are along if they are a gift for another child. It really cuts down on the tantrums when they know you WILL NOT buy toys for them when they are along.
The above rule does not apply to Grandparents!

I read that "Big Brother" honchos warned him that they would take away his Camaro (prize won in first week) if he went off like that again. He was pretty threatening...that's a HUGE no-no and could have seen him instantly eliminated.
On the other hand, Jerry is no prize. He certainly had no business calling anyone a womanizer given HIS OWN behavior on the show. Sheesh..he's a dirty old man!

Regarding air travel, I expect to be uncomfortable. I take along snack foods and water, and soon will be taking a pillow, too, as neither of my recent flights offered pillows or blankets. IMHO, there's no excuse for the poor service, but...let's just say it's a career field to avoid.

What brand does Trader Joe's sell that you love?
Ah. TJ's recently came out with their own private label chocolate ice cream, which I think is very good indeed. It sells out quickly, so others must think so, too. They used to stock Double Rainbow's Ultra Chocolate, but that was too chocolately for me. (I can hear the protests already: "There is NO SUCH THING as TOO CHOCOLATELY" from DR Kerry. Am I right, Kerry?) I prefer a light chocolate and usually mix chocolate with vanilla. But TJ's new chocolate is pretty good.

THEN, this morning, I looked online and had an E-mail from a concert venue and found Dolly Parton is going to be in town on August 7th so I checked really quick on seats and prices and found 2 seats in the 3rd row from the VERY front for a decent price. I grabbed them quick...I ADORE Dolly!
Then we have been talking about see Shrek in Seattle when it starts and found tickets to that as well for a pretty decent price, so we grabbed those too! We're going mad! We've got Broadway and music in our souls now and can't get enough! We found a matinee on a Saturday for Shrek so not sure but may drive back home after the show or might stay overnight. Still deciding!

-
Oh-ho! Is that perhaps "a" reason daughter-in-law might not be happy all the time.
No - my daughter started off with "if you behave in the store I will buy you a treat". I, on the other hand, refuse to offer bribes. I "expext" the boys to behave when shopping and they usually end up with a treat (of course they also think of fresh fruit as a treat). With her, the boys regularly have tantrum meltdowns in stores, I rarely, if ever have the problem (they learned early on that they just won't work!). It is easier to get the kids to behave if you engage them in the shopping experience rather than telling them to shut up and walk slowly. The biggest problem I have is taking them into Borders for books and having to say "no" a thousand times to all the junk toys they put out with the books!

That's what I mean, DerBrucer. If they know you don't buy toys, they won't throw the tantrums. And never give in to tantrums and they will learn they don't work.

Gee, Happy Meals and the playground is why we like taking the lads to McDonald's. They get to pick the meal of their choice, and you get fast service (and the kids usually opt for a milkshake over a soda). The toys usually wait 'till after they eat and the playground is a great way of letting them burn off energy while the old folks sit a spell. More often than not the toys get left in the car. I always budget the extra playground time into the shopping trips, so it work's out fine.

Well, I had to cope with parents who take the kids through the drive thru on a regular basis. Grandpa's rule - we go inside and eat our meals toether at a table like civilized people - a small victory! (The younger lad would much rather eat out in a real resturant - he likes salads and shrimp scampi and all that other grown-up stuff; even when we order from the kids menu, or have a pizza, William still wants his salad!)

That Jet Blue experience sounds horrific.
I just don't get that they did nothing to try to get you another flight. They just expected you to stay in NYC for a week at your own expense?
I would also write a letter. That is ridiculous.
Jet Blue is a low-cost no-frills airline - you get what you pay for.
When forces of nature close down most of the east coast airline network for most of the day at a peak travel time, there is no way Jet Blue. or any other carrier, is going to get you another flight out at a convenient time. Jet Blue did offer them seats on the next available flight - which was Friday.
Of course they expect you to pay for your own accommodations - you purchased no guarantee that weather would not cause flight cancellations (if you are so concerned, then pay for special trip insurance). Concerned travellers can always book back-up flights for the following day before leaving on a trip - but the are refundable tickets and pricey!
If Jet Blue covered lay-over expenses due to weather caused flight cancellations the basic cost of their tickets would be considerably more.
der Brucer
A whiney letter to Jet Blue management will do little good.

I wonder if it will start a trend that Hainsie/Kimlets will follow. Will we soon see photos of others here on the pot?

I know someone else said this as well. I think what I stated before was thought to be towards United that it was expensive, which it was but what I meant was the Jet Blue tickets were NOT low cost, believe you me! So we did not get what we paid for. :(

I love keesha. I think jessie needs to go. And i don't think angie is a threat.
However, the only point i disagree on is memphis. I like him. And he didn't scare me at all. I really dislike jerry and think he was totally at fault. Jerry is the one who told everyone memphis is a womanizer. And it's probably not true. He has no proof. It's one thing to criticize someone's game or their actions in the house. But jerry went after memphis' reputation. And i think he was right. Jerry is not all innocent. He felt april's breasts and has done quite a few inappropriate things (and he is married, memphis is not!).

We had actually looked for lower cost ways to go and did find them but decided on Jet Blue because we found a lot of reviews that said they were good and had educated ourselves on Jet Blue from other sources as well but much to our dismay we found out too late that their prices had gone up and service level down in the last year or so.
-

Next, I watched THE AMERICAN MALL. Yep, they took HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL-type actors, plunked them in a mall in the summer instead of at high school, and based a musical around it.
I hate to be petty since at least it IS a musical and until a few years ago, we'd gone so many years without anything resembling a real musical with new scores and choreography, etc. Anyway, this was thoroughly mediocre in every respect. The characters were ciphers, the songs either power ballads or heavy hitting "rock" songs, choreography VERY mundane (at least Kenny Ortega does have a lot of bouncy, rhythmic movement; the moves here were bland and basic), and a by-the-numbers story (boy meets girl - break up when a rich girl offers to fund his band - make back up when he sees the light).
Maybe tweens will love it, but I certainly didn't.
-

Ah! Well, that's one "catch" with JetBlue - You really do have to take advantage of their lower fares - BUY! - while they are still available. As the plane fills up, and as the date gets closer to your departure, the price goes up. *JetBlue also went through the same "spike" in prices a couple of weeks ago that all the airlines had to institute due to the rising fuel costs.
I don't fly that frequently, but I fly regularly. I've always had a good experience flying JetBlue. However, I will say I will usual investigate other carriers since I'd rather not make the trek out to JFK. LGA is much closer to and more convenient for me.
Regardless of the demeanor of the counter people, I think we all have to remember that the airlines are a means of transportation. They are not weather forecasters nor foretellers.

There were a bunch of special features on the DVD. 4 music videos of numbers from the movie, a "let's dance" segment where one of the chroegraphers teaches moves for the two big production numbers, deleted scenes, a gag reel, two commentary tracks.
As I said, when it premieres on MYV in about 10 days, it may go over pretty big, but I did find both HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movies more entertaining.

This I completely understand that...I really do. It just would have been nice if they said something like, "I'm really sorry for the inconvenience but this is the best we can do at this time. I wish there was something more I could do." Just a little empathy would be nice, ya know?

DP Colin and I enjoyed "The Band's Visit".
I love that non - American films are not frightened of using "silence" in their films.
Not surprising then I guess that "The Passenger" is one of my all time favourites as it has no background soundtrack (except for near the end).
We watched French film "Apres Vous" the other night. I would think the Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller (maybe together) version would be on the drawing boards by now!

I've been nosing around on lots of fast food sites - very interesting. When I go to Popeye's I order two mild breasts. Those are actually not that caloric - 350 each. The fat grams are high, 20 per, but that's not terrible. What's terrible are the biscuits - that's what causes all the harm for me: 240 each and 13 grams of fat each - of course, I have to slather them with butter, which makes them more caloric and fat gram-laden than the chicken!

This is coming up there on August 4!
"VARIATIONS ON SHAKESPEARE" will highlight songs from musicals based on the works of William Shakespeare with performances by some of Broadway's hottest stars! The works of Shakespeare have always served as a true inspiration for many playwrights and composers over the years, with some of the most famous musical theater pieces inspired by the Bard's plays. KISS ME, KATE inspired Cole Porter to transform the classic TAMING OF THE SHREW and gave us such great songs as "Too Darn Hot" and "So In Love." THE COMEDY OF ERRORS was the play that inspired Rodgers and Hart to pen the hit musical THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE and the most famous musical of them all, WEST SIDE STORY, is a beautiful musical re-telling of ROMEO AND JULIET, set in 1950's New York City.
The evening will be hosted by Tony Award winner MARK RYLANCE, the first Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe in London who is currently treading the boards in the hilarious hit revival of Boeing-Boeing, with appearances and performances by Broadway and TV Star TOM CAVANAGH (TV's Ed, Urinetown, Shenandoah), ANTHONY RAPP (original cast of RENT, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Tony Award winner CHRISTIAN HOFF (Jersey Boys, upcoming Pal Joey), Tony Award nominee ALICE RIPLEY (Side Show, Next To Normal), BARRETT FOA (The Drunken City, Avenue Q, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), AUTUMN HURLBERT (MTV Finalist "Legally Blonde: Search for the Next Elle Woods"), Tony Award winner DENIS O'HARE (Sweet Charity, Assassins, Take Me Out), KATE SHINDLE (Legally Blonde, Cabaret, Jekyll and Hyde, and Miss America 1998), DARIUS DE HAAS (Rent, Marie Christine, Kiss of the Spiderwoman), Tony Award nominee MARTHA PLIMPTON (upcoming Pal Joey, Top Girls, Cymbeline, The Coast of Utopia), ALEXANDER GEMIGNANI (Les Miz, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George), GARRETT LONG (South Pacific, The Spitfire Grill), and Emmy Award nominee GEORGE WENDT (Norm from "Cheers," Hairspray), with MORE NAMES TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY! The evening will be directed by Igor Goldin with musical direction by David Andrews Rogers.
* Please note that all performers are subject to availability.
Attire: casual.
Ticket prices range from $150 (great seats), $100 (good seats), $50 (seats).

A small thing of mashed potatoes and gravy is surprisingly friendly at 130 calories and 4 grams of fat. I totally lay off the potatoes these days, but that's really not bad to get the taste. Also, the small McDonald's fries are surprisingly not bad either: 230 calories and 11 grams of fat - totally doable on my diet. Who knew?

Gee, Happy Meals and the playground is why we like taking the lads to McDonald's. They get to pick the meal of their choice, and you get fast service (and the kids usually opt for a milkshake over a soda). The toys usually wait 'till after they eat and the playground is a great way of letting them burn off energy while the old folks sit a spell. More often than not the toys get left in the car. I always budget the extra playground time into the shopping trips, so it work's out fine.

Speak for yourself! I loathe and detest McDonalds. McDonalds is evil! Evil, I say, EVIL!
As for "The old folks sit for a spell," that's because I'm on my feet supervising. Only the really old folk sits.
At least the younger grandlad knows that there are interesting foods to be eaten at places other than McD's. The older grandlad thinks of that dastardly place as the epitome of culinary delights. Danged brat has no desire to aim any higher. Bleh.

Dear BK:
You might want to consider poaching a chicken breast or two at home, instead of buying them fried at Popeye's. Poaching them will result in them coming out nice and juicy, and flavorful. Have one now, refrigerate the other cooked one for later. Saves money that way, too.
I quite often use the cooking liquid for making some nice rice for a side dish. And don't forget to have a fresh veg - steaming works fine for cooking the veg.
Low-cal, hi-flavor. Can't be beat!
-
All of the airline troubles of BK and JulieC40 make me realize how fortunate I was to have relativley trouble free flights on my last two NYC trips.
And what I would really like to know is why no DRs who are booking cabs or cars to and from the airport in NY don't hire Gudda, the Egyptian driver I had last time I was there?! He is so nice and fun to chat with, and his car was so comfy!
Oh, and he had a great collection of Egyptian pop music CDs which he played for me upon request!
-
For some reason, the Russet potatoes at the store today were on the puny side. I think they're the first of the new crop. In any case, I'm trying something a little different tonight - der B and I will have two smallish potatoes each, one each with bacon and one each with mushrooms.
That, plus steak and iceberg lettuce wedges.
(No, not lo-cal, but der B and I don't worry about such things.)
-
And with that, I'm going to head to the kitchen.
-
Hmm... I guess if BK wants to stick to one meal a day, he could have one of these:

Oh, and the JetBlue backlash has begun, I truly believe. I got an e-mail from them today announcing BIG sales on upcoming flights.
That's not a "backlash". That's a sale - and a way to increase business for the fall. -And almost all the airlines are running similar promotions.
-
I had a Subway Club for lunch. It was fine.
-
I've been doing a lot of work today on several different projects. One of them is this series of seminars, workshops, and panels I'm doing for my alumni association, LACCTAA. The first of them is booked - my friend Barbara Deutsch and her life-coaching seminar. I'm waiting to hear back from Karen Morrow about the musical theater workshop she'll be doing - when that date is set then I'll book the panel discussion with former LACC students who've had successful careers in the business, talking about how they've survived.
-
I've also been making inquiries about certain performers for this NY gig, and one of them, Mr. Jason Graae, can do it. So, that's one down.
-
And the end of the work day is at hand.
-
And a new page is drawing nigh....

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Can you (or someone) post a link?? :D

I just found BABES IN TOYLAND photos from 1903! Here's the end of the opening Act One number. You can't see it, but the men in the chorus are wearing hats made of water sprinklers.
-
And here's the closing Act One Butterfly ballet. That's Miss Albertina Benson as the Moth Queen.
-
And here's Bessie Wynn in the Toymaker's Shop addressing the Master Toymaker after singing "Toyland." The men's chorus is dressed as toymakers and Margaret Sutherland, who lost "Toyland" to Bessie is sulking in her apprentic garb on the left.
-
Forgot the photo!

Thanks for sharing your delightful "Babes" DR Elmore.
-
Thanks for sharing your delightful "Babes" DR Elmore.
You're welcome, DR tomovoz!
and for DR MattH, who's been giving us lots of MGM "Oz" dances, here are photos from the 1902-1903 WIZARD OF OZ by the creators of BABES IN TOYLAND!
That's Anna Laughlin as Dorothy and Bessie Wynn as the poet Dashemoff Daily in the middle of the shot.
-
And here's the Act One finale of the snow covering the poppy field. That's Dorothy (Anna Laughlin) kneeling in the center of the photo, Fred Stone as the Scarecrow and Bessie Wynn are on the right along with an unknown character, possibly Tryxie the waitress and Dorothy's cow Imogene. On the left are Pastoria, the rightful ruler of Oz, the Cowardly Lion, and David Montgomery as the Tin Man. And I think that broad at the back is Miss Albertina Benson again as the Snow Queen.
-
And here are Montgomery & Stone doing "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay," the show's biggest hit after Tryxie's number with the ladies "Sammy." The Arlen-Harburg score is soooooo much better!

I, like elmore, do get McDonald's craving, although much less frequently now because of those two rancid filet o' fish sandwiches I had to toss. That sort of thing really does harm - certainly I will never ever have one of those sandwiches again, but every six months or so I like a Big Mac.

Here at work, they're going to upgrade every computer to Microsoft Vista within the next few months. We're still on Windows 2000 (and I am at home, also). Evidently, the computer people have been happy with what Vista can do and won't go to XP at all. Earlier today, Gwen (the computer services supervisor) came over to our department and wanted to know if anyone would like to be a tester (and she was looking at me when she said it ;)). I said, "Sure, I'll be a guinea pig."
So, some time within the next week or so (or even as early as tomorrow!), I will have a new tester computer with Vista installed. They'll keep my original computer unchanged until they/I/we decide that everything's okay, then they'll upgrade what I have now and take back the test computer. I might need to upgrade my home computer if I really like Vista.
Have (m)any PC users switched to Vista? Still on XP? Still on Windows 2000 or even 98??
-
And on that note (E-flat), I'm off.
Until later!

Some of today's coverage. Jeremy took the stand.

So, the evidence is done, jury instructions have been read (it took 2 1/4 hours to read due to the number of theories and lesser included offenses). Tomorrow at 9:00 AM we do closing arguments. After the news and weather, I'll work on it in earnest. It's all in my head, but I need to organize it, figure out what exhibits I'm going to use and make some visual aids.

Thanks! I haven't seen the whole KTIV report, my cable and internet are out, I'm on dial up and man is it slow! Their summary at 10:00 PM was wrong, but that's ok, it's only the jurors that matter..
Better go..much to do...

I watched the film version of GODSPELL tonight. Lovely to relive those songs every few years. I think the Sony DVD was taken from a videotape master because it certainly isn't very sharp, and the colors are kind of subdued though as I vaguely recall, the film never looked great.
At least it's an anamorphic transfer, so that did help the situation somewhat.
-
Then I went back to THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and finished it. Just love the movie, always have, and enjoy seeing it once or twice a year.

While I was waiting for PROJECT RUNWAY to finish recording (so I could watch it and skip the commercials), I watched a couple of RICK & STEVE episodes from the DVD. Silly, naughty fun.

PROJECT RUNWAY
I do not like Stella. She acts so helpless and needy, and if the judges don't dock her for always going for the same basic look, then they're being very unfair. I find her stuff dull.
I was afraid we were going to lose our third gay designer in a row, but thankfully, Keith was spared. The two women who were left both had ho-hum outfits, but I might have gone with the woman who stayed "in" as the one to go home. The other outfit was matronly but had some style. I hated that right angle ruffle on the black dress, and even after Tim warned her it wasn't good!
