Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Unguantine, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're looking for some Unguantine at their local Walgreen's.

DR George - I still use XP at work and at home.  I'm curious about Vista, but have also heard some horror stories.  It's probably not as bad as all that - I think it's mostly driver and compatibility issues.  It will be interesting to hear your take on it all.

DR elmore3003 - thanks for the gift of all those wonderful vintage photographs!   :)

Good morning, all! Today, I'm back to the Lincoln Center NYPL, and I first have a stop at Toyland to do some investigations into copyists' handwriting.

Yesterday I managed to lose a stamped envelope I was mailing to AT&T. I decided to taxi down to Lincoln Center because it was too hot and I was too tired of waiting for a bus. Then the taxi got stuck in traffic around the costruction site at 72nd Street, and as the taxi sat there, I watched the meter go from $3.30 to 4.50, so I decided the 104 bus that was finally arriving was the answer. I bussed from 72nd to Lincoln Center, and I don't know if I left the envelope in the bus or in the taxi.  I hope someone finds it and mails it for me.

DR tomovoz, BREAKING AWAY is actually a 1979 movie; it was the first film I saw on my move to NYC, and its writer Steve Tesich is the father of my goddaughter Charlotte's best friend Amy.

I use XP Home at home and XP Professional at the office. The reason I didn't switch to Vista was simple. I didn't want to search around for drivers and possibly have to buy a new printer and scanner just because I was buying a new operating system. I also have programs that will not work on Vista and I'm not going to change programs just to get bells and whistles in an operating system. Too many times software companies decide to change and "upgrade" their programs based on their own sense of what the customer wants without talking to the users and you end up with a good program being destroyed in the process. It's why I don't use Quicken anymore. I don't use Norton anymore. I won't use I-Tunes. If I want to download or rip music I don't need I-(Take-Over-Your-Computer)Tunes to do that. I'm smart enough to organize my music (besides I don't keep all my music on my computer, hard drives fail and if that's where you store your music, unless you are backed up from here to the moon, your music is gone with everything else) by myself without the help of Apple or Microsoft or other DR managers.

This is turning into a rant and I didn't expect that at 8:10 in the morning. I'll stop now. I have work to do.

but of course it would have already been 1980 here Larry. It's always tomorrow here.

of course I didn't check the dates. (My times usually come from association - I know where I was teaching when I saw "Breaking Away" so for me it was a 1980 viewing.

Of course with that logic "E.T" which I did not care for at all, was a 2004 movie.

Thanks for the correction though.

As for Vista - I'm still quite happily with  XP.

I tend to forget "European Movies" I watch as I usually see them way after their initial release date.  I did enjoy "Babette's Feast" and "My Life As A Dog"

Favorite 1980s movies?

This was the 1980s was the "Golden Age" of Woody Allen.

He gave us such great films as:

HANNAH AND HER SISTERS
BROADWAY DANNY ROSE
ZELIG
THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
RADIO DAYS
CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS

I could watch those movies forever...and never get bored.

DIE HARD

Least favorite 1980s movies?

Actually, if I don't like a movie, I tend to forget it.

However, I do think that both OUT OF AFRICA and GANDHI are totally over-rated.

GANDHI was too long and OUT OF AFRICA was (for me) a total bore.

DR SWW, re: your suggestion of poaching a chicken:

What exactly does poaching a chicken entail? I've never done it to a chicken and it sounds very interesting.

Poaching entails simmering in a lightly flavored liquid. The most simple poached chicken would involve putting chicken in a pot, covering with water, bring to a simmer, and cook until done (20-25 minutes for parts, some 40 minutes for a 3-4 lb. whole chicken).

Poaching works well for chickens that are full-flavored (bigger birds, game hens or capons), since they tend to get tough if roasted, and poaching lets them loosen up a bit.

Advantages of poaching: very simple, fairly quick, no fat added, no chance of meat drying out (worst comes to worst, the meat just gets a bit mushy). Disadvantage: very little flavor added. Generally, I'd only poach chicken as preparation for chicken salad.

You can spice things up a bit by sauteing some chopped vegetables (celery, carrots, and onion are the classics) in the pot before adding the chicken & water, and by adding or substituting broth, wine, or soy sauce to the water, and/or adding aromatics to the liquid (herbs, garlic, you name it).

You can save the liquid for later use (excellent broth... I like to use it to cook rice), and/or serve some as a sauce.

Dang, now I'm getting hungry...

Another method for having cooked chicken for multiple uses:  buy a large roasting chicken, clean out cavity, poke holes in rinds of 2 fresh lemons and insert them in chicken.  Roast as directed until done.  Richard did this Monday and we had a nice chicken dinner, with rice and veggies.  Tuesday he made a large chicken pie, which we had for dinner that night and had leftovers for lunches.  Last night, we had the chicken salad he made and I have a portion of that for my lunch today.

I learned this technique from Richard's late cousin, so I call it "Chicken a la Debra."

I have a tag at the end of a scene in Singin In The Rain - after R.F. pulls Lina off her perch using the microphone wire, I say: "Cut! Dammit" then I throw my hat down on the floor and stomp on it.

Every night this week,  the light person has done the black out when I say "Cut" and has been given the note, wait until the hat hits the floor.  Again last night, blackout was even earlier.  I said: "I'm not moving until I get some light and do my bit."  I finally did but said: "How hard can it be to run the lights?  I've done it."

Then we had to carry our own chairs out for the "movie" scene.  Nothing was happening and the stage lights were up for the short crossover, and we were waiting.  The screen started to come down while the lights were up, but our cue is the screen so we came out with our chairs.  The stage manager started screaming at us that we were wrong wrong wrong.

I said: "We thought our cue was the screen we were waiting back there forever."

Then he started really yelling at ME that I had no business making the light person cry and that my behavior was uncalled for and they were having some problems.  Hmmmmm......all they had to do was tell us we were holding while they did something.  We were just trying to do what we were supposed to.....

Dumb A$$ girl doing the lights is "special" and has no business in that position - she screwed up THE SUNSHINE BOYS royally last year.

Of course then the director got into it and told us both to be quiet.  And at intermission, I apologized to the stage manager, but he said NOTHING about an apology to me....NOTHING.

ASS - I hate this show and that damned theatre and I hate to think about going to rehearsal tonight.  You work your damned heart out spend HOURS and $$$ doing it, and idiots who should only be allowed in the theatre if they buy a full priced ticket think they can run your life.

And that's what I'm doing today.  Fuming.  Tonight I won't go early, I won't do the other things I do to help, I won't talk and encourage anyone, I will do my part, and come home.

 :(

I have rather enjoyed the "Elizabeth" movies, although I skipped the Blanchett sequel at the insistence of a friend.

I, of course, love the 60s take on Henry II ("Becket" and "Lion in Winter"), and the Henry V movies are both wonderful (Olivier & Branagh).

I'm wondering whose story would make the most entertaining film?  I'm still somewhat intrigued by the abdication in the 30s of the late Duke of Windsor (George III?), but there is some tawdriness involved that doesn't appeal to me, as well.

"Cromwell" rather soured me on seeing anything more about Charles I.  And we've more than had enough of "Arthur" of the Britons.

I've had Vista by necessity since the week it came out--our old XP computer died the day they pulled all XPs off the shelves and I had to buy Vista.  There were some driver issues to begin with, but I haven't experienced anything like that for well over a year (and in fact I really didn't have any problems anyway, I just downloaded drivers until I found something that worked).
Title: Re:UNGUANTINE

I will say it did have a glitch, that others I know who have Vista experienced as well, where the internets (a Geo. Bush reference) would just "turn off" willy-nilly and you'd have to reboot to get access again.  That seems to have been fixed completely with the new SP2 download.

It's simply a free "want ads" on the internets.  :)  Craigslist.org is the main address, then find L.A. (they may even have a subsection for Studio City), then locate "for sale" and "Movies/DVDs" or whatever it's called.  Just make sure to go with the anon reply (the default) and not to list your phone number, etc. in the ad.  I made that mistake when I listed a tv I thought no one would be interested in and I had probably 50 calls in the first 15 minutes after it posted.

DR George - I still use XP at work and at home.  I'm curious about Vista, but have also heard some horror stories.  It's probably not as bad as all that - I think it's mostly driver and compatibility issues.  It will be interesting to hear your take on it all.

The horror stories that I've heard all relate to the lack of drivers for existing programs.  Here at work, that's something that I don't have to worry about. ;)

Thanks.

What's the difference between poaching and boiling a chicken?

As for poaching chicken...

I like the traditional Chinese method where you place a whole chicken in a pot, cover it with cold water, then bring the water to boil.  Then once it starts boiling, you turn the heat off, cover the pot, and let it sit undisturbed for 30 minutes.  -Jeff Smith, "The Frugal Gourmet", advocated this method.

The chicken comes out perfectly cooked and moist, and then it's just a matter of pulling, shredding and/or cutting the meat off the carcass to use in the recipe of your desire.

*The poaching liquid is basically tasteless, very bland.  Yes, you could use it to cook something else, but it really would not add any discernible flavor.  The point of poaching is to gently cook something in order to retain as much of the flavor as possible.  Now, if you boiled it for a longer period, and cooked it until done, then more of the chicken flavor would disperse into the water/cooking liquid.

The Small Back Room is a great film, one of my favorite of the Powell and Pressburger films.  There is a scene on a beach that is one of the most suspenseful in all film, and was clearly the model for the 70s film Juggernaut, also a very good film.

I'll say it is. I was squirming in my seat and jumping at every moment. One of the greatest suspense sequences I've ever seen.

And that surreal sequence with the clocks and whisky bottle: Minnelli and Cukor both appropriated it for comic effect in their surrealist scenes in FATHER OF THE BRIDE and PAT & MIKE.

Anyway, lunch ran late, and I had some phone calls during the afternoon, too, so it took all my viewing time this afternoon to watch THE SMALL BACK ROOM. Quite wonderful (except for that rather tedious romantic tiff), and I'll enjoy watching it again tonight while I listen to the commentary. Didn't have time I fool with any of the bonus features on the disc. There appear to be three (including the commentary).

TOD:  Loved Splash, Big, Breakfast Club, The Color Purple, Raging Bull, Risky Business, Out of Africa, Working Girl, there were so many good ones then.  The least favorite was Tron (ugh!), The Goonies, Oscar.

My interview went pretty well but they did give testing for spelling, typing, and Excel.  I did great on the 1st two.  I did better on Excel on other tests but this I only got 55%, dang!  I was so upset with myself.  After I chose the answers, I realized it was wrong after it was too late.  Well, we'll see.  Then I got home and had another message from The Alzheimer's Association as I sent them my resume for a Help Desk Specialist.  I have an interview with them on Monday at 1:00 p.m.

Has anyone here heard about the latest theory on the T-Rex?

Paleontologist Jack Horner (I know, he must have been mercilessly teased as a child) says his analysis of everything that has been discovered on T-Rex up until now indicates that he wasn't very fast, wasn't a major predator and was, most likely, a scavenger.

T-Rex had very small arms...and a rather tenuous "balance" that would have precluded him ever attacking, much less holding his own, against another creature.  In fact, Horner says (and showed via computer animation), if any T-Rex ever lost his balance and fell over, chances are slim he'd ever have been able to get up.

At this point, I don't need to upgrade my home computer...yet, but I know that someday, I will.  My sister's boyfriend built it and installed all the programs, so when I do upgrade, I have practically instant customer support. :D

Things are a little weird here at work. This post house has been in business since the '70's. I knew something was up, but today it is official: the owner is selling the business to new owners, who have "big plans". I hope we can continue to work on THE CLOSER here, because it would be a major pain to relocate the media, plus we have a great work flow here!

I hope everyone gets to keep their jobs. I can't blame the owner--his wife passed away suddenly eariler this year and now he just wants to be near his kids and grandkids. I hope he enjoys his retirement; it is well-earned.

Since I did not get a chance to leave the building today - they brought lunch in for us - I went ahead and walked from 26th Street up to Columbus Circle/59th Street.  Various people throughout the day kept telling us that it was hot, humid and ugly outside, but by the time I stepped out onto the sidewalk, it didn't feel all that bad.  Of course, since I had to wear a jacket in the rehearsal studio in order not to freeze, I may just been defrosting.  In any case...

I was going to walk a few more blocks up to 72nd Street to grab the train, but I could feel a blister developing on my right foot.  Thankfully(?), once I got home, I found that it was not a blister.  It was just a bad "rub" due to a hole in my sock.  But it still feels nice to have my feet up right now.  :)

I'm smart enough to organize my music (besides I don't keep all my music on my computer, hard drives fail and if that's where you store your music, unless you are backed up from here to the moon....................

I was, but I am better today.

So, all in all, it was a good three days of auditions.  I did have quite a nice "highlight" yesterday.  A "Broadway veteran" came in to audition for one of the roles; as soon as I saw his picture and resume, I actually got a little star struck.  He has been in the original casts of some landmark shows over the past 30 years, and even the production team just marveled at his resume.

He went ahead and brought in one of his signature songs.  He was in the ensemble of the original cast of a show, and understudied and eventually took over one of the supporting roles.  -And he still had the original copy of the music that he was given almost 30 years ago!  It was just soooooo cool playing for him, and it was even cooler when he paid me a very nice compliment after we had finished.  -And we had a nice chat today when he came back for his callback too.  It was literally like playing for and talking to a bit of "Broadway History" to me.

*And, yes, I am purposely leaving out his name since I feel I would need his permission to post his name on this public site.  We were meeting at an audition - a business meeting, as it were - and not at a social gathering. However, I guess I could post the show and the song he sang - sort of.  -And the you can Google away to satisfy your curiosity if you so desire.  The show (sort of): The First Lady of Argentina.  The song (sort of): "The Tango Singer's Only Hit".  ;)

The song (sort of): "The Tango Singer's Only Hit".  ;)

That's pretty cool, Jose!

And blind items are so much nicer when very obvious (to me, at least) clews are given. ;D

You will not!  You'll go out there and by a trooper -  just like always!

Did the new owners give you any idea of when their "big plans" will be unveiled?

-And I hope you and your co-workers get to keep their jobs too.

I was right about tomatoes not being the cause - right weeks and weeks ago - not that anyone believed me.  $200 million later, everyone pretty much has said it was never tomatoes, although those twits who initially called it refuse to stop saying "We still THINK they might have been the cause at the beginning."  Riiiiiight.  Just admit you were stupid, jumped the gun, and move on and figure out the REAL cause.

Well...everything I know about Paleontology I learned from the movie Dinosaurus...and it contradicts all that this scientist says.

I still can't think of any 1980s movies that I like.

And looking at peoples lists I realize I saw a LOT of 1980s movies that I had forgotten about.

Maybe I liked that Pee Wee Herman movie. That one I would watch again.

Actually, I can think of lots of 1990s and 2000s movies that I like. Not so many 1970s movies, however....aside from some Bollywood ones.

They know tomatoes were not the cause - everyone knows it.  They do not KNOW the cause, therefore they may as well have said lettuce or cauliflower or squash or onions or anything else - and they, too, would have only been guesses.  They behaved poorly, made a guess that turned out to be incorrect and has been acknowledged by everyone but themselves as to have been incorrect (tomatoes are suddenly perfectly fine to eat), and they cost an industry $200 million dollars.  That makes them Idiots with a capital "I" in my book.

I'm almost through for the day, although I may jump in and get started on the liner notes for the new Kritzerland CD.  Since Jrand guessed it, and it's finally been guessed at the other site, it's one I'm very proud to announce - Mario Nascimbene's wonderful score to one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasures - Scent Of Mystery, a film I've written about extensively, both here and in Kritzer Time.  In fact, I may use sections of Kritzer Time in the booklet.  The booklet will, of course, be in Smell-O-Vision - each user will be on his own, smell-wise, but it will work if you have the proper items in your home and garden :)

Now, this will be strictly limited to 1000 copies, and I think these will go fairly quickly because a couple of online dealers will order big quantities for their overseas customers.  So, as I do from time to time, if you'd like to get yours held (we're about four to six weeks from having them pressed) feel free to place your order now, the usual way - via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  The CD will be 19.98 plus the usual 3.50 for shipping.  Be sure to include the album title in your order.

Thanks! I'm really thinking the verdicts will come in tomorrow (plural, there are three counts).  But whether they do or not, my job is done and I can relax.

However, glancing over page one, re: E.T. -

The movie is OK.  Not exceptional, but it's all right.

The score, however, is fantastic.

That's how I think of the film: it gave Williams a chance to write wonderment.

And that should be enough.

I am quite intrigued by this new CD, BK! Of course I have never heard it...or even seen the film (believe it or not, DR Elmore)

Thanks to DR JRand, I am watching the old 1960 TV show WORLD OF GIANTS.

Marshall Thompson...or is it Arthur Franz...is about to be eaten by a cat.

I always considered AN OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN Debra Winger’s “breakout” role.  I thought she was terrific in that and stole the show.

I was very disappointed she did not receive an Oscar for SHADOWLANDS, especially since I did not feel the winner deserved it.

Well, I wouldn't have given it to Holly Hunter for that role either, but I would have voted for Emma Thompson in THE REMAINS OF THE DAY.

I thoroughly enjoyed Charles Barr's combination film analysis and behind-the-scenes audio commentary for THE SMALL BACK ROOM. I listened to every word of it.

The other two bonus features on the disc were a 21-minute video interview with the film's cinematographer and a 48-minute audio excerpt from Michael Powell reading from his autobiography the sections dealing with THE SMALL BACK ROOM.

The first was very interesting; the second a bit dry and overlong (though with good information).

Even though i did not watch what i ate tonight (chinese food), i decided to weight myself before i went out.

I wasn't really planning on it. But i thought what the heck. I think i must have lost like 15 lbs. I think i would like to lose another 10-12 to feel really comfortable (and hopefully all my clothes will fit).

But i would like to start exercising more. And hopefully after i lose this, i will try to keep up the exercise and maintain it!

I didn't have time to skim through all of today's AS THE WORLD TURNS, but Luke was on (and a little Noah) in the 40 minutes I did get through. I'll finish it tomorrow as well as watch MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST while I cook and eat lunch.

I probably won't get to FEAR ITSELF until Saturday.

Very few people have seen Scent Of Mystery.  It only played about four weeks and then was gone forever.  It was ultimately made into a three-panel Cinerama travelogue (they extracted the three panels from the 70mm Todd AO negative) called Holiday In Spain, shorn of smells and about thirty minutes of film.  Denholm Elliot, the film's star, was called back to provide narration, since the thirty shorn minutes rendered the film incoherent.  The original intermission point was changed and it was awful.  They aired Holiday In Spain version once in the late 80s - it looked like someone had set up a video camera and taped the center panel of the three-panel print, which was completely faded.  It was horrible.  eBay sellers sell that awful mess, and usually for big bucks.

and they almost got it right (i don't like courtney at all). They got 3 out of my 4 favs into the finals (katee, twitch, and joshua).  But how the heck did court beat chelsie. Not happy about that. But i guess it's better that they kept twitch, if one of my favs had to go!

I'm done viewing, and I've begun in earnest the liner notes for Scent Of Mystery.  Remember, the booklet will be in Smell-O-Vision.
