Well, you've read the notes, the notes were august, and now it is time for you to post until the august August cows come home.

DRLaura was kind enough as usual to spend hours with me doing crummy errands (county agencies, many waiting rooms.) We got the giggles because we were so weary of it all.  Despite her telling me to NOT overdo it on my leg (also as usual), I typically overdid it on my leg, and it was/is quite sore.  So, here, on this public forum, I am giving her full permission to bitchslap me.  There hasn't been enough bitchslapping around here for some time anyway.

Yes, Sing, we are starting to load up the car for the trip to Cheese Land - I mean Wisconsin. Since there is a lull in the loading I decided to check in and catch up.

Lull in the Loading, that's the title of my next novel.

And the word of the day is: PANOPLY!
It's that new board game, a Monopoly variant, where the idea is to buy up as many film critics as you can.  Park Place and Boardwalk are Roger Ebert and Pauline Kael.

TOD:

DVD - lately I've been watching EUReKA, the first season (we haven't snagged our copy of the second season yet) and the Two Fat Ladies set.  I'd forgotten how well done TFL was - between PBS and the Food Network, it was re-run endlessly, which kind of dulled the palate for the show.

The season finale of Doctor Who is being broadcast on SciFi tonight.  If you're a fan, don't forget that it starts a half-hour early, due to the number of former regulars/recurring characters making appearances.  With the exception of Penelope Wilton, of course - she only got to be in the previous episode, since the Daleks knew who she was.

Anthony left at 6:10am, earlier than he planned. He wanted to be on the road by 6:30 so he's ahead of himself. He should be in Chicago some time around early evening if the weather and traffic are good. MapQuest says it's a 13 hour trip. We shall see when he calls.

The cell phone is charged and turned on and he said he will call when he gets to Chicago and may call some other time during the day to make sure the phone works.

Loading the car was simple and quick and parting was easy. I'll see him in a month and he's got work to do for the next two weeks. He was very happy to have the laptop and the cell phone, in spite of his trash talk about them.

Ginny and JR, I told him to wave when he gets into Ohio and Indiana. Maybe you'll feel a breeze at some point. If so, it's him waving. Cilla, he'll wave when he gets to Wisconsin, which is about as close to Iowa as he'll get.

Nothing on the horizon this weekend. I'll putter around the apartment, tape one of the Britcoms which has been moved from a sensible 10pm time slot to an 11:30 time slot. I'm an old man, I can't stay up that late.

Maybe I'll actually go to a movie and see Wall-E.

I also have a play date with a friend's dog. He travels for business frequently and when he does, Homer goes to a kennel. I'm on the list as a walker and playmate so I'll go to the kennel (if it doesn't rain tomorrow and Sunday) and take Homer out for playtime.

Just as I was leaving for work, the home computer imploded.  At this point, it is not certain whether it can be revived.  It's all backed up and restorable, but I don't have the cash on hand to replace it at the moment.  At least we still have the laptop.  But not the best news to start out the day!   :(

In Arnold's absence, with the word of the day being PANOPLY, the first thought for the song of the day was "My White Knight."

But since the "My White Knight" video refused to link after three tries, how about Scandal with "The Warrior"  as an alternative

DR singdaw, I am quite sorry to hear about the computer debacle.  I've been meaning to buy a Lacie Hard Drive since March and still haven't.

*I did the drive from Richmond to Chicago - well, almost to Chicago (to Nappannee, IN) - a couple of years ago.  It was a loooong drive, and I did it in one day.  And twice in one summer.  Round trip.  However, since I was making the trip in my 1993 Ford Escort Wagon, I only ended up having to re-fill my tank once, and that was not until I had reached the middle of I-80 in Ohio!

As far as work goes, I wil continue to work on THE CLOSER. I am a freelancer so I choose where I work and I chose to work here, because I have a great work flow with the on-line editor and the support staff. So I hope things don't change too much and we'll continue to have good work flow.

It sounds like the new owners are very music oriented and seem to have a lot of bucks (at first I was thinking Tyler Perry but I'm not sure...) so it could be interesting.

Media check:

CDs:  still digging through months of backlog material.  Got through "Adrift in Macao" and finally all of "High Fidelity" over the past day.

DVDs:  getting through a bunch of the new CBS Video boxed sets of tv shows I have to review.  Did "Dave's World" (music altered/replaced a la "The Fugitive," if you care), and am now doing "Caroline in the City."   Betsy and I started the Blu-Ray of "There Will Be Blood" two nights ago and are enjoying it.  Fascinating to see a film go that long without dialogue up front.

Yes my suit is purple....my shirt is a lovely magenta...and my tie is yellow/orange.  This is my mostly second act costume.

DR MBARNUM that is not a cap, that is a beret....I wear a brown one in the first act, I also wearing riding pants and a pit helmet in one scene, and of course my tuxedo with my black beret to the big premiere...with a beautiful moo cow b/w cummerbund.

Yes - I am dressed conservatively by comparison.  We should have some more pictures to post next week.

For a different type of lobby display, I asked everyone to bring a photo of a relative or ancestor from the 1920's - the silent era - and I have been merging them with a photo of the cast/crew member....

Since I am at work right now, I can't give an example, but I will post one when I get home.

I have seen some very interesting pictures and heard some great stories.....  Even though some of them think that the 1934 Chicago World's Fair took place in the 1920's....it WAS a good picture.

And some man brought in a picture of himself and his wife taken at one of those resorts dressed in gangster regalia.  It's an eclectic group.

After the funny Flynn and Provenza episode, we get a very sad and disturbing one...

Part of the greatness of the show is that from one week to the next, we never know what the overall tone is going to be. And, of course, there is sometimes comedy contained in even the darkest episodes.

I've had a nice afternoon of viewing.

I began with last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST, and it was very funny. I was, of course, shocked about the papparazi swirling around those places in LA. The sheer numbers of them are pretty terrifying. No wonder the celebrities that get their attention get so numbed by the fame thing after a time.

My ROMANCE/ROMANCE is similarly grainy and awful, but my A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is pretty good. I've never transferred either to DVD. One of these days I must do that, especially NIGHT MUSIC. That ROMANCE/ROMANCE is just such poor video quality that I don't like watching it, and DVD would only accentuate its flaws.

Next, I finished skimming though yesterday's AS THE WORL TURNS. It did have some nice Luke-Noah moments. They've made Noah much more settled and less mopey now, so it's less frustrating to watch. (The actor must have whiplash from all the jerks the writers have put his character through.) They were not in the previews for today's show.

Then I started on SOUTH PARK - Season 11. I've watched 7 episodes thus far, and only one was less than wonderful, a lesbian takeoff on '300.' All of the others contained moments that were really fall down funny. One on Hillary Clinton was very ribald but hilarious, too.

The creeators/writer/director Trey Parker and Matt Stone do mini-commentaries on all the episodes. They usually only run 5-10 minutes at the front of the episode before they get bored with talking. But they make for interesting listening to hear where their heads are at, where they got the ideas for the shows, etc.

Well, I was going to say stagger, but she had been in the hospital with cancer, after all, and the last thing she did was fix some tea for friends, so I was trying to be kind.  ;)

Do the theaters advertise the movie is in 3D?  Our theaters don't state the movie won't be in 3D, which I find annoying.

Regal Cinemas in Lacey is only playing it in 3-D.  It specified that when I looked it up at Fandango.com (http://www.fandango.com).  I really want to see this! ;D

Fandango does mention to check if your local theater is showing it in 3D.  What I can't find out is where the closest 3D theater is to us.  Probably because it is in Portland.

For those not in to "pop" music.
Mick Hucknall is the lead singer of Manchester UK group "Simply Red". They had 2 #1 hits in the USA in the 1980's. Mick's voice (IMHO) is one of the best and most distinctive in pop music.

The Bobby Tribute is to Bobby "Blue" Bland..

Good Evening!

Well... I ended up back at MoMA earlier this afternoon.  I started off walking through the five model homes that are on "display" in their open lot in conjunction with Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling (http://www.momahomedelivery.org/).  Some very cool structures, although I'm not exactly just how comfortable living in the Micro Compact Home would be.

I was going to head back up to the sixth floor to check out the gallery exhibit again, but I got sidetracked by Kirchner and the Berlin Street (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=3992&ref=calendar).  This exhibition doesn't open to the public until Sunday, but MoMA Members are able to preview it now.  And since I'm a member...

I ended up spending about an hour "experiencing" the prints, paintings and sketches that comprise this exhibit.  Some truly striking images (for lack of a better word).  -And I think I may head back there tomorrow to check it out again since it's the last Member Preview Day.

...After sitting in the Museum's Sculpture Garden for a bit - I think I may have even nodded off a few times - I was going to head back up to the Dali exhibit, but once I stepped into the lobby, I noticed that the crowd was getting, well, crowded.  -It was actually not that busy when I got there earlier this afternoon.

Well, it turned out that the crowd was in conjunction with the Target Free Friday Nights at MoMA.  And there were a LOT of people taking advantage of the free passes: the line was snaked down the block and around the corner when I stepped out on to 53rd Street.  So...  A good time to head back home.  ;)

I put my zip in & found only one theater showing the film, no mention of 3D viewing.  I put your zip code in and 5 theaters pop up, 3 of which are in 3D.  Granted some of these theaters are a good distance from you, which is an even greater indicated how limited our 3D viewing is in Ashland.

In order for the 3-D to work with this film, the theater must be equipped with a special silvery screen which I understand is SUPER expensive, and lots of theaters haven't changed over yet. (Just like the majority of local TV stations haven't upgraded their equipment to HD yet.)

This is why the majority of theaters are showing it in 2-D.

I put in disc three and noticed that the first three episodes are the Imaginationland story arc which I watched on a separate DVD released back in March, so I really now have only two episodes to go that I haven't seen.

Trey and Matt did record a new commentary for the three episodes, so I will have to watch as much of the episodes as the commentary covers, usually about five minutes in each episode. The commentary for them before ran 47 minutes.

Next I watched PATRIOT GAMES off of Universal-HD (recorded on the DVR). This is my favorite of the four Jack Ryan films, and it was OK in HD, but when it was over, I had time to put in my sDVD version, and it's actually got more saturated color than the HD version. This is one I won't be upgrading.

However, I noticed my copy of CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER was the first nonanamorphic release, so I will likely upgrade to the Blu-ray version of that.
