Well, you've read the notes, the notes were recurring and had a theme, and now it is time for you to post until the themed cows come home.

Since TORCHWOOD is starting here again on friday, i have a question about DOCTOR WHO.  They are repeating season 3 here (i believe you guys just finished season 4).

I was just curious if these shows can easily be viewed on their own, out of order.

I did not like the second BACK TO THE FUTURE much at all. To be fair, I haven't seen it in a long time, but my memory is that it completely fell flat.

The third one felt so different from the first that I hardly think of it as a sequel, but as I recall, I liked it better than the second one.

I'm going to see how it works to bypass this week's MAD MEN on Sunday night and pick up the high definition version On Demand on, say, Wednesday night. If that works out OK, that'll be my way of watching the second season of the show. After watching the first season on  regular AMC last year and then reviewing the first season one Blu-ray and reveling in the period trappings in high def, I really don't want to go back to a SD presentation of this show.

Coming up tomorrow on TCM is THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929. A dear friend who had the laserdisc of this movie made me a VHS of it years ago, and I have practically worn it out. I am so excited to finally be able to burn a copy of the movie onto a DVD from a digital broadcast which should make the copy the best possible.

Warners has made no announcement of any intention of ever releasing this ancient relic of early sound cinema, so I'm very eager to get as good a copy as I can.

Yes, the clips featuring Joan Crawford, John Gilbert and Norma Shearer, the "Singing' in the Rain" number (it was written for this movie) seem to get excerpted quite a bit in other documentaries and programs.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the movie is in good enough shape to make a decent recording.

Good morning, all! I'm feeling puny today so I'm staying in. I have a few computer things to accomplish with The Lady Of The Slipper but I'm fighting an urge to rteturn to bed and not climb out of it today.

DR MattH, I wsh to hell PSYCH was on before MONK because the past three episodes have convnced me the writers are idiots and that the show has jumped the shark one too many times. I expect more from a mystery or a comedy than the following:
  1. three weeks ago he bought a house
  2. two weels ago he has no money to pay Natalie; how the hell could he afford to buy a house with worse cash flow that mine?
  3. last week the continually ugly egocentrism of both Adrian and Natalie seemed totally out of character, Randy was more repellent than usual and the whole episode seemed to negate any likeable traits from anyone except Greg Jbara. I think the series is an embarassment.

Speaking of embarassments, does anyone really - I mean REALLY - watch the Holly Hunter series or IN PLAIN SIGHT? If TNT isn't careful, they'll kill THE CLOSER by piling so many bad things onto its back.

Well, I'm crabby today.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And two words:

Title: Re:THE RECURRING THEME

And, yes, I did make blueberry pancakes. I was in the mood for a "real" breakfast.  I was going to head out to eat, but since I needed to do a bit of grocery shopping, I decided to head to the market, and see what happened to catch my eye.  Well, they weren't selling blueberry pancakes, but I did happen to see a box of Bisquick, so...  :)

*I also happened to hit a good sale week - at least for the stuff I wanted to buy.  My grand total at the cash register was $14.36.  However, if I had not used my club card to take advantage of the special sales, I would have paid $32!  Now that's a bargain!

**And I already had the blueberries here at home.  And the maple syrup as well.  :)

I'm not sure if this will start with the second batch of CLOSER shows (the first batch will air thru Sept. 15) but eventually, when TNT rolls out its new shows, Grace will move to a different night than THEN CLOSER and they will use both shows to help launch some of their new original series.

We were down south of Atlanta yesterday, celebrating Greg's sisters' birthday. We brought a cake from the French bakery---strawberry with butter cream frosting---so I will be making amends all week for that!

On the way home, the sky was black, and we saw several lines where high winds went through and leveled trees. We had to come through downtown Atlanta because of road constriction on the highway, and there were lights out everywhere and lots of trees and big branches down. One fell across our street, knocking out power to our 81 year old neighbor (it was her birthday, too!) so we spent most of the evening dealing with that. Since the power line was live, there wasn't much we could do.

We were able to reunite a lost Jack Russell with its owner, and met some neighbors we didn't know, so that was the good part of the evening.

As for her power---it's still out, and since she's the only one in the neighborhood that we know of to have a problem, it may be a few days before it's fixed. There were 150,000 homes without power yesterday, and driving down through town, all of the people who had been dining, etc. were out on the streets waiting for the power to come back on.

As an example:

Greg Haley, who owns this home with Gelix Kuemmerli on Ormwood Ave. SE, picks his way through the rubble Sunday morning. A violent thunderstorm raced through their Grant Park neighborhood Saturday evening and sent a more than 100-year-old oak tree into their 1917 historic home. The tree punctured the house, and daylight could be seen in the living room.

DR Elmore,

Both SAVING GRACE and IN PLAIN SIGHT do very, very well in the ratings. Not as well as THE CLOSER, of course, but certainly they do nicely. I stopped watching SAVING GRACE last year about 7 episodes in. As much as I loved both Joel and Ken as her boy friends/lovers, I just couldn't stand her character, and the religious material running through it was also a turn-off.

IN PLAIN SIGHT just didn't have enough of a mystery for me, and I really hated the sister and mother characters.

Back to MONK for a second. I was VERY disappointed in Natalie's turning the way she did. It seemed very out of character for her and only manipulated by the needs of the plot. The mystery was pretty good, but I did not like the characterizations.

Next, I watched FLYING THE SECRET SKY and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved learning something new and surprising about World War II, a heroic story with a nice gathering of people who participated to make the story credible and very interesting.

Next, I finished THUNDERBALL which I had started yesterday. I had started listening to the newly created DTS 5.1 track, but today, I switched over to the Dolby Digital 5.1 track. It seemed louder, though there seemed to be a bit more separation in the DTS track.

We've booked our first two LACCTAA events - both in September.  First up, my friend Barbara Deutsch and her coaching workshop (which is incredible) on Sept. 6th, followed by Karen Morrow doing a musical theater singing workshop with a Q&A session after on Sept. 27th.  For anyone on this coast, I recommend them strongly.  And we're keeping the entrance fee really cheap at $10.  To take Barbara's workshop would normally cost $150.

It is virtually impossible to tell who the mole is since so many of them are sabotaging things and pretending to be the mole. But i would be most surprised if mark was the mole. He has been getting things right that he shouldn't have. ANd i just don't see the mole getting more things right than a normal person would (example when mark was on the bike and answering all the questions even though he could not see them) (or mark answering so many of the questions when they all had to run around in groups last week or the week before. for example clay got a simple answer wrong and mark corrected him. if mark was the mole to me he would have just let clay guess wrong).
i actually sort of thought it was paul. But i am convinced it must be craig now. jfdjd l;jsafl;sa fjflajfl jdfsafj  ld;jsafsafl;jsa f;l; jkll;j l

This was $6.50 at St Vincent DePaul.

Well... It looks like we're having a dinner party.

My roommate, Jim, invited some friends over.  He had planned to make some pasta, but mentioned that he wasn't sure he'd have enough to feed everyone.  Well, since I had bought a couple of chicken leg quarters this morning - and since it turned out there were five in the package instead of the usual four, well...  After a short marinade - with LOTS of garlic - they are now baking away in the oven, and Jim is about to start making his pasta.

*And we started off the evening with some strawberry daiquiris!  :)

One more St Vincent DePaul find....and to think I almost didn't stop there during my errands yesterday...a very, very nice leather fedora (I find hats of this sort to make a man look extremely attractive!). Inside is says "Genuine Leather Buftex Process" and the size is 7 5/8s. It still has the original store price tag on it so I am guessing it was never worn. It is a bit too big for my head, but it was only 99 cents...good Ebay item.

My best find at a thrift store, as I think I may have mentioned before, was last year finding 3 unopened 1960s Aurora movie monster model kits, still in their plastic wrapping around the boxes. Just 99 cents each!!! They were amongst the Halloween items at Value Village thrift store...sold them all on ebay which paid for my trip to Los Angeles and my wide screen tv!

I don't expect I will ever find bargains like that again...but who knows!

So, what do you do, DR Cillaliz?  Just go wait in your office for a call that the jury's back?  Or is that just how it happens on TV?

Well, you don't go anywhere without your cell phone.  Usually I sit around and wait, but this has gone on for days, and you can't just sit for days. On the other hand, if the jury has a question, and we've had 3 so far, you have to drop whatever you are doing and go meet with the other lawyer, the judge and the defendant at the courthouse to see if it is something that can be answered or if the answer is to refer to the jury instructions. (that's the answer most of the time) you can't comment on the evidence in anyway, so most questions can't be answered.

I don't have anything scheduled for tomorrow (that I know of) and Edith will be on vacation, so I will probably just stay at the office, go through all my other cases and figure out where I am and what needs to be done next.  I have lots of office work I can do.    It's very hard to do nothing, but hard to concentrate too...

Et moi aussi! Sorry about that candle, DR Ginny. At least it wasn't the six-pack of frozen Budweiser that stopped a dancing career I know of.

I'm debating if I'm going to continue this roman a clef I've been reading, QUICKSILVER, from 1942. It's a thinly-disguised, very very long novel about a tour of ROMEO AND JULIET by Katharine Cornell. It's a veddy theatrical and an interesting look at Broadway around 1939  with a lot of oblique comments such as Evelyn, the Cornell character, wearing mannish clothing, the director (Guthrie McClintoc) having a "musical" vocie, a character based on Tyrone Power (I think) being "bohemian" or "decadent." Much as I want to like it, I don't very much.  It's like a Nancy Drew book for adults, and those roadsters and teashops got old fast when I was younger.

I'm about four chapters in and I keep wondering why the young actor is so hung up on the Park Avenue girl with the fortune and intense anti-semitic attitude.  Much as I wonder why, I find I'm not sure I want to learn the answer. If there is one. I've read much better backstagers.

When I went back down, I started watching the Disney anaimated ATLANTIS film. A user on the forum where I work wanted someone to try watching it on a Samsung 1500, and since I have that Blu-ray player, I helped him out by trying it. He couldn't get his to play, but mine played like a champ.

I hadn't watched this movie in years (since it first came out), so it was nice to revisit. Lots of famous voice actors: Michael J. Fox, James Garner, sounds like Selma Diamond and Jodie Foster, but I didn't check the credits to be sure.

In other news, power has been restored to my neighbor---and her house. And a kind neighbor re-hung the siding planks that were ripped down by the falling electrcial cable.

The woman across the street had her power line hit but only the neutral was disconnected, so everything in her fridge is probably OK. She was out of town, so I called her to left her know what happened and see if she needed any immediate help. She came home tonight and siad she had power but no A/C. And she was quite shocked to see her front yard covered by tree parts.

The neighbor next to her had a big branch come through her roof and bathroom ceiling.

Since our house is surrounded by old, big trees, we were VERY lucky!

Since TORCHWOOD is starting here again on friday, i have a question about DOCTOR WHO.  They are repeating season 3 here (i believe you guys just finished season 4).

I was just curious if these shows can easily be viewed on their own, out of order.

Most of the episodes are self-contained, but they sometimes do overlap.  If they do, you can still watch the individual episodes, but you probably won't miss what you don't know.

Don't you LOVE it when that happens??  A co-worker of mine found a genuine Tiffany vase at Goodwill several years ago for only $12!  It was appraised around $1200 and she sold it for over $800!!

Yesterday, my sister, her boyfriend and I went to see "Mamma Mia!"  I thought that it was very good.  The fact that most of the adults were too old for the roles didn't bother me...and I didn't have a problem with Pierce Brosnan's "singing" voice.  I'm going to see it again because I bought "Knocked Up" at Costco (it was very inexpensive) and it came with a code to be able to get a free ticket for "Mamma Mia!"  I didn't use it yesterday because my sister paid for my ticket because her boyfriend and I were supposed to put up a ceiling fan on her second floor, which we didn't do, yet.  It just got a little too complicated.  I think we'll be able to finish it...I think.  If not, my parents hired a guy they know to put up their ceiling fan.  My sister could hire him to finish what we started.

Back from the final performances of the "Bus Stop" Revue.  Things went pretty well tonight, no lighting mishaps anyway, though quite a few fluffed lyrics.  For some reason the entire cast had a group simultaneous cerebral hemmorhage and completely blew the Finale Reprise so badly we did it twice.  Even the second time wasn't too great.  ;)

Also in the burned-to-a-DVD list:  Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" and (I don't know why) "Ricky Martin: Unplugged."  He's very nice to look at, but I've never been specifically interested in his music (although, I've always liked what I heard).  I think I was more interested in the "unplugged" idea of the show but he really is a good performer...and nice to look at. ;)
