You got that charm
That certain charm
That makes Young Farmers
Forget the farm.

Oh, you got that thing.
That certain thing.

Yes, I have been listening STILL to Miss Dorothy Provine.

Happiness comes double
After a little pain.
If you want the rainbow
You must have the rain.

It is raining this morning with a chance for severe thunderstorms.

I am in one of the groups chosen to be photographed by the newspaper for Singin' In the Rain, so this time tomorrow I could be stuffed in mailboxes in three counties.

HOWEVER the costumer did indeed like the PINK suit I found for Kathy at the end of the play and took her out of the red 80's flounce prom dress!

I burned Dirk Bogarde's A TALE OF TWO CITIES to dvd, but have not examined the results as yet.

Yes, MR BK those Sci Fi titles have been discussed on several boards, and I would like the WORLD WITHOUT END/SATELLITE IN THE SKY disk myself, but as you said....gone in 60 seconds!

I have never seen WWE in its glorious CinemaScope incarnation, although I have seen the space ship crash - since it was used in the widescreen version of QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE released last June....Allied Artists......

Good morning, all! This morning, Toyland. That should last till about 2 pm, and I believe then I will toddle home and deal with whatever fresh hell awaits me here.

DR Jose, my schedule this week is open, so I'm good for dinner any night.

I want to see JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH again, but now there's this mummy movie, and I see on Fandango that they are both playing a block from my home.  Hmmm . . .

Doesn't anyone have the Dorothy Provine Gay 90s album with Joe "Fingers" Carr (oy, that name! sounds like a pedophile)? After all that 20s vo-de-o-do, I want to hear her be a bird in a gilded cage.

Chicken?

All I ever seem to eat is chicken.  My wife makes it many different ways, and they're all good.

However, the truth is that my all-time favorite chicken meal is Colonel Saunders' ORIGINAL RECIPE.

It's the best tasting fried chicken in the world.

Unfortunately, it's probably also the unhealthiest, which is why I haven't eaten it in years.

re: the TLC Paul McKenna show, I CAN MAKE YOU THIN (that was on TLC in march/april):

I watched the final show last night.  It was very interesting and i think i'd like to try it.

Basically this guy has a plan that supposedly works (there were tons of people there and it worked for them). And the studio audience did it during the series and it worked for them.

There are 4 rules:
1.eat when you are hungry
2.eat what you want, not what you think you should eat (that includes ANYTHING)
3.eat very slowly, chew your food, do not watch tv or have distractions and eat consciously.
4.stop as soon as you are full.

He has acupuncture techniques that stop cravings. He uses associations in case you eat based on emotion. Or if you have a food that you just binge on all the time.

There was a lady who ate 5 lbs of chocolates a day.
He had her pinch her left middle finger and thumb together. And then think of anchovies and warms and barber floor hair. And then pretend to scoop it up and eat it. And then she added chocolate to it. By the end she did not want chocolate again.

He also had people pinch their right thumb and middle finger and try to think of a very happy time.

He also made everyone get a pedometre. And count their steps. He did not say you had to exercise like a freak. But in the last show he did do the thumb thing to make people associate exercising as a good thing.

As i said yesterday, i would suspect it would work quite easily for people very overweight. Especially the part about them stopping as soon as they are full.

I am a little more skepticaly about the eating any food for me personally. Since these people were taking huge portions. ANd so obviously they would get full before they were done. I personally take quite small portions, but finish it. aNd if i am still hungry i take more.

I like the part about eating when you're hungry. And about chewing very slowly without distractions. And i will try stopping as soon as i am full.

But i never binge ate. Although i do love sweets. It's not like i would have them around to eat them!

But one of his points is not making people feel like they are deprived. He doesn't want people to not have the food around that they love. He wants them to have it but be able to choose when they eat it.

I think i will try all components of this plan except the eat whatever you want part. Even though right now i'm only eating healthy foods. I don't eat things i don't like just because they are good for me. I love the salad i eat every day because i made a dressing i love.

But i do think that once i've lost these 10-12 lbs that i would like to try that part of the plan as well. To see if it works!

Has anybody heard of this plan? Tried it?

You must have not watched the previous three installments of the series because it's ALWAYS been run this way. That's why I knew what would happen without even consulting TV GUIDE or any other reference.

And you mentioned last night that you would rather have had a two hour finale. Would make artistic sense but not ratings sense. THE MOLE has been a ratings dud for ABC, and there was no way in the world they were going to drag down their Monday night average by telecasting two hours of a low-rated show. Don't expect to see THE MOLE again next summer.

Nothing on TV for me tonight. The NCIS rerun is the finale from season 4 (which I own on DVD), so I won't be watching, but I'm hopeful next week we'll jump to season five where I only watched a couple of episodes.

I'm scheduled to get the DVD set for review later this month, but, alas, they won't be in high definition.

I didn't have image stutter, but there was something wonky with the HD telecast last night for sure. (I've never seen this anomoly before.) There were like wrinkles in the color modulations that showed up weirdly on fleshtones. It almost looked like you could see blood vessels under the skin in their faces! Very disconcerting. During one set of commercials, I switched to HBO-HD just to make sure that there wasn't anything wrong with my TV.

Chicken-wise, I made this sunday night and it was very yummy. We had leftovers last night---still good. I used one cup of uncoocked brown rice because I thought from reading the recipie that the 1 1/2 cups were referring to rice after it was cooked. I thought I'd cook the one cup and have leftover rice. Yes, I know, I'm a cooking newbie. Anyway, this was easy to make and enough for 4 meals if you only use 1 cup of uncooked rice. I also used the frozen shelled edamame, and pecans insread of walnuts, because that's what I had on hand. It was very healthy and filling.

Brown rice and chicken stir-fry with edamame and walnuts

Bon Appétit |  January 2001
recipe

By cooking the rice and toasting the walnuts ahead, you can take this dish from skillet to table in a very short time.

Servings: Makes 6 servings. 3 1/2 forks rating
Ingredients

1/2   cup coarsely chopped walnuts
4   tablespoons tamari soy sauce* or low-sodium soy sauce
2   skinless boneless chicken breast halves, thinly sliced crosswise
1   teaspoon honey

4   teaspoons oriental sesame oil
4   teaspoons minced fresh ginger
3   garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2   cups short-grain brown rice, cooked according to package directions, cooled
2   cups shelled cooked edamame beans (from about 26 ounces of pods)

2/3   cup chopped green onions

Preparation

Stir walnuts in medium nonstick skillet over medium heat until lightly toasted, about 3 minutes. Drizzle 2 tablespoons tamari over walnuts; stir until tamari coats walnuts, about 45 seconds. Cool. (Can be made 3 days ahead. Store at room temperature in airtight container.)
Combine chicken, 2 tablespoons tamari and honey in medium bowl; toss to coat. Let stand 15 minutes.

Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add chicken and stir-fry 2 minutes. Add ginger and garlic and stir-fry 30 seconds. Add cooked rice and edamame; reduce heat to medium and stir-fry until heated through, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Divide rice mixture among plates. Sprinkle with green onions and walnuts.

*Tamari soy sauce is available at specialty and natural foods stores and some supermarkets nationwide.

Chicken?

However, the truth is that my all-time favorite chicken meal is Colonel Saunders' ORIGINAL RECIPE.

Unfortunately, it's probably also the unhealthiest, which is why I haven't eaten it in years.

 :'(

Don't mourn, DR Druxy.  Here in Oakland CA, the colonel's original recipe KFC isn't remotely like it was back in the 1960s and 1970s.  Just doesn't taste the same.  And for some reason, some of the pieces just don't resemble what the franchises say they are.  The thighs are a mess.

I will occasionally get four pieces, but I am inevitably disappointed in the drumsticks (too stringy and insubstantial) and the wings (where's the "meat"???).

And the breasts have become so gargantuan that any flavor that might have been in them originally is now simply lost.

I've often wondered how different KFC might be in some other state, but when I'm home in SC in December, the only fried chicken I've a hankerin' for is my mom's!

Something appropriate to the situation would have been said.

However, DR Singdaw, "Tripe" is not a farm animal.  It's a by-product.

It's been so long since i've seen the mole that i forgot. I remembered that there had been a recap show saying how the mole did what they did. But i did not remember that they did not announce the winner!

I love me a roast chicken with garlic & rosemary (delicious, if a bit fussy, version here (http://www.nytimes.com/library/dining/cooking/121599chicken-recipe.html); the "past recipes" link there gives some good recipes as well.

My emergency roast chicken version involves making a dry mix of cumin, paprika, pepper, onion & garlic powders, plus a few dashes of cayenne pepper if I'm the primary eater (I use kosher birds which are pre-brined, so no salt for me; if you're using a non-kosher chicken, add salt). Rub the mix all over chicken parts and under the skin, and roast in the oven at 450 for 45 minutes. For whole chickens, butterfly the bird first. If you've got a particularly fatty bird, slice up some onions for the bottom of the pan when you're roasting. After 45 minutes, turn off the oven, and leave the oven door open a bit so that the chicken finishes cooking w/o drying out.

I tend to make the mix up in large quantities, and keep a stash on hand in the fridge.

For grilling, I marinate the chicken overnight in a mix of olive oil, lemon juce, lemon rind, chopped garlic and rosemary or tarragon.

The producer I work with has Charter digital cable. I have Comcast and watch the show in HD.

We had both noticed an occasional stuttering of image in the show, although commercials and our promos look fine.

Has anyone else noticed this?

We don't remember noticing stuttering.  We have DirecTV (satellite).

We are just getting top chef and next food network star now.
We will only get project runway setp 1.
Torchwood only starts on friday.
I"m doubtful we'll ever get the closer again. Which is so odd since they showed the first seasons.
Saving Grace i'm guessing could come on soon. Since they did show the whole first season.

Hmm... unfortunately, the bacon and the butter are non-starters for me (and that's a friggin' big chicken... we don't usually get kosher birds much over 4 pounds in my neck of the woods).

It does sounds lovely though. I like the herb mix (note: probably best to insist on fresh oregano; the dried stuff is very potent and would overpower the others), and the orange would add a nice complexity to the whole thing. It's a very nice combination of techniques, and I can see where it would produce something excellent.

As a substitute for the bacon, I'd probably crank the heat up a bit, start the chicken breast side down, then turn it over half-way through. Jermiah Tower has a neat trick where he takes the fat deposit from the tail end, pounds it flat, and uses that to cover the breast meat.

Wrong time of year for it, but once the cooler/colder months settle in, then it's coq au vin for me. Pick your recipe; as far as I'm concerned, just make sure that you have a tougher chicken (the bigger/older the better), a palatable wine (don't need the expensive stuff, but something palatable), and time (barely simmer, don't boil this one, and it'll taste even better reheated the next day)

I don't mean to sound ungrateful; I really don't.  My company allows Domestic Partners to tag onto the employee's health benefits, which is great and which is a luxury many are not afforded.

And yet...

The value of those benefits are taxed.  And they are not taxed for married couples.  And now that we're married, I feel they shouldn't be taxed for me, either.

So I'm filing an appeal within the system.

I think I'm happy with the 5th song I've written for the Eunice character in Nudie Musical - I like the tune very much, and I was able to keep about thirty percent of the lyrics from the last version (changing their scan and adding and subtracting words here and there), plus even putting back two lines that I always liked from the movie version of the song.

singdaw, to whom is your appeal?  Is it to the IRS?  Or to the State of New York?

If it's about Federal taxes, remember taht the Federal government doesn't recognize your marriage.

If it's about state taxes, does the state now require your to file as married, with all the attendant plusses and minuses associated with that?  Or do you now have the option to file either as single or married in New York State, depending on what you choose?  I simply have no idea what the answer is, but I wonder if you would make inroads on the state level as long as NYS approving your marriage holds up.

Thanks, DR FJL.  My "appeal" is just within my own company's hierarchy.  Though you have a good point in that there may be state and/or Federal laws which govern the taxability of the benefits in question.

Must shower now, and then await our musical director and our first cast member.  I've allotted an hour for him, then Alet is in for thirty minutes (she's only got two numbers), and then half our ensemble is in at 2:30 for forty-five minutes, and then our leading man is in for an hour (he has the bulk of the songs), followed by Barry Pearl.

Maybe I should hire one of our illustrious HHW attorneys?

I'm surprised to learn the benefits are taxed.  Good luck.

Back to TOD:

Thinking about chickens & skillets... try your hand at chicken under a brick. Basically, you're cooking the chicken with a little oil in a skillet, while weighing down the chicken to maximize surface contact area. Works best with whole chickens or thighs.

Basics:

1) If using whole chicken, butterfly it first.
2) Get your favorite herb mixture (really, anything works here; I'm partial to garlic, lemon, and rosemary), and spread it under the skin (don't bother seasoning the skin, it's all going to fall off. Salt & pepper liberally
3) heat oil in a skillet, add the chicken skin side down. Put a weighted pot on top of the chicken (fill the pot with water, or cover a brick with foil and put on top of the chicken). Cook for about 15 minutes, turn the chicken over, and replace the weight. Cook for another 10-20 minutes.a Remove skillet from heat, let chicken rest for 10 minutes, remove and serve. If you want to get fancy, stir up the pan drippings on high heat with 1/2 cup of your liquid of choice (wine, beer, water), reduce heat to simmer, and serve as sauce.

That's an issue for me also but I think now that you're legally married in California you actually have a case for the New York tax system. Since Governor Patterson issued the order recognizing SSM from out of state I think that applies across the board including in areas of taxation. There is nothing to be done on the federal level but I think it just requires adjustment of some figures by your accounting department on the state level.

I used to be able to pay my portion of my insurance premium out of "pre-tax" dollars but now that it's a family policy and it's a "domestic partnership" arrangement I can no longer do that. I am allowed a portion of the premium to be paid from pre-tax but the rest comes out of regular salary and (as Sing said) I'm taxed on that portion as well because it's considered a benefit! What part of unfair don't you understand Pat Robertson (you stupid toad)???

Next I watched AFFINITY. It hasn't even premiered on Logo yet. It plays on August 17th, and then the DVD is available two days later on the 19th.

It's a gothic romance with a touch of mystery and a neat twist at the end. I really enjoyed it. It's set in Victorian England (filmed in Romania), and though none of the top stars are well known, in the cast are the always brilliant Anna Massey and Amanda Plummer (in a part smaller than I would have expected).

Except for some rather shoddy make-up work on the men (with those bushy muttonchop sideburns that weren't glued on well or particularly great matches for the rest of the men's hair), the period details are excellent, and it was easy to get immersed in this world.

Since we're talking about same-sex marriage and the tax system, I wonder if I could share the treatment I wrote for a one-act play I've been working on.  It's a long post, and may be a little involved - but I'm trying (among other things) to figure out whether legal developments in same-sex marriage in recent months have made the story outdated, such that it should at least be set a few years in the past rather than in whatever the present is at the time.

The tentative title (it's a comedy, I hope!) is SETH AND TAXES

[Possible tagline:  To Nathan, the only sure things in life are...SETH AND TAXES]

"Seth and Nathan are a happy couple, together since the mid-1990’s, now about 40-45 years old.  Nathan made a good deal of money as an investment banker in the late 1990’s, and used the money to fulfill a dream – he and Seth used his money to make a few independent films, which like most indies, lost their money, and caused Nathan to have a loss on his taxes of close to $2-million over the years.

Finally giving up, Nathan went back to work as a banker, and his accountant pointed out that there was no need to pay taxes for many years since the net operating loss could be carried forward.  But the accountant says in passing how sad it is that they’re not a married husband and wife, because then the money Seth makes at his movie-studio-assistant job could also escape taxes.

Indignant at the unfairness of the system, and wanting to keep Seth’s earning without paying taxes, they hatch a plan.  When Seth finds an opportunity to move on to work for a new studio, he applies for the job under Nathan’s name and gets the job, living his work life under Nathan’s name and resume, and getting all checks and tax forms paid to Nathan.  Then they file their return using Nathan’s net operating loss, paying no income taxes and even getting back the social security taxes, getting a huge refund.

As luck would have it, they are audited, and the IRS auditor asks what seems to be an innocent question of Nathan about what it’s like to work with such-and-such star, who is the auditor’s favorite movie actress.  Nathan of course has no idea.  The auditor then uses a flimsy excuse to show up at the movie-studio job, supposedly to deliver the zero-tax-due audit report (but really the auditor wants to meet the star).  The auditor asks for Nathan, and is of course pointed to the person that everyone thinks is Nathan, actually Seth.  The auditor realizes a scam is being pulled, that Seth is doing the work but claiming he is Nathan to everybody there, and for tax reasons.

The auditor brings them to court, to civilly get back taxes paid – they lose, but it’s not lots of money, so  Nathan has no problem paying it.  The auditor wants it to end there, but the auditor’s somewhat homophobic supervisor decides that his office must press criminal charges against them to show them they can’t circumvent the IRS’s law.

They hire a maverick attorney, who makes the case that since they love each other and live just like a married couple for all the years, there could not have been the intent to defraud the government.  There was no fraud, their love has been as real as any male-female couple, and the only fraud is the government’s refusal to accept their relationship and give them the benefits of marriage.

We follow the trial through jury selection and a few expert witnesses.  The sides rest their cases, the jury in the criminal trial comes as a hung jury, the judge sends them back, they come back with a decision that their union was not a fraud in any sense of the word so how can we find them guilty of fraud."

The last time I saw Jo's mother was at a Loesser Christmas party about 10 years, and she and her Ma sang a duet. It was lovely and sentimental, and just right for a Christmas party of family and friends.

I guess I'll be doing an editorial/cleanup job on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA orchestra parts and, possibly, GUYS AND DOLLS for Jo beginning this week. I love what I do.

AMAZON ANOMALY ALERT!

I reviewed some of my outstanding Amazon pre-orders today and discovered something I never would have thought possible:  I had ordered two separate titles TWICE.

How could this happen, I wondered as I deleted the extraneous orders?  I rely upon Amazon to let me know when I've already ordered a title, that's how.  Whenever I visit a listing of a title, I get an instant reminder at the top of the screen if I've already ordered it.  It tells me exactly when I ordered it there.

For these two titles, however, it did not remind me.  Now, I see I must always review what I have on pre-order before ordering something.  But it shouldn't be that way, and if any of you think Amazon's reminders are failsafes, fuhgeddabout it!

I have a question that i'm guessing some DRs will know the answer to.

I have a gas bbq (grill). Tonight i accidently left one of the burners on low instead of turning it off. The gas was off. But i went out. And when i came back i noticed the left side of the grill was still lit (although very low).

I'm assuming that since the gas was off that it was not using up any gas (is that correct?).

But if it runs on gas and the gas was off, then how did it stay lit (this is 2 hours after i turned it off).

Thanks!

If the gas was off, it wouldn't stay lit. There would be no fuel for it to burn

Thanks to the rest of you who gave me congrats on the trial.  It's really strange to get back to a normal schedule.

I don't either. I figured out I have to watch part of Saving Grace to see it, but I don't like that show either

I wonder if the preview is on the TNT website.

Btw, i just found out Saving Grace season 2 will start here sept 4th.  It's not my favorite show. But it did grow on me!

He can only ring the bell for us to open the door.....or to play with him, or to give him attention, or just to watch us run. ;D

The gas was 100% off. I turned it off at dinnertime. Plus i double checked 2 hours later, when i saw one burner was still turned on.

I know sometimes even when the burners are off, it can stay lit for a short amount of time. Although i'm never forgotten to turn off one of the burners.

I first saw Amanda Plummer in April 1982 in NYC at the Music Box -she had the title role in Agnes of God, with Elizabeth Ashley and Geraldine Page - what a night! (This was right before her cameo turn in World According to Garp.)

I love love love Amanda Plummer! When I worked at the Drama Book Shop, Amanda always brought the employees flowers. When I went backstage to see her after PYGMALION, she was really wonderful and we had a great visit. She was charming to my friend Jeff, and my memory is that we walked her to a taxi.

DR FJL - since, as you pointed out, the Federal tax law is what it is, I don't think any changes are required in your treatment.

Is there anyone on this site that is a fan of EUREKA?  I had never seen the show, but I was curious about it after seeing an ad for the new season.  I just got the first part of season one from Netflix today.

We watch it. :)   I find it different and fun, & I enjoy the star in his role as the sheriff.

I'm listening to UK singer (late 50's early 60's) Lita Roza. I remember a few of her early recordings from 78 rpm discs.

I had quite a nice evening of filmed entertainment on DVD.

I began by finishing ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS. Bujold's performance has grown on me over the years, and I quite like it now.

Next, I plucked out of my towering stack of "fun" DVDs WATCH ON THE RHINE. I have only seen this movie once many years ago, so I enjoyed seeing it again. Had some really stirring speeches and some wonderful performances. Not a movie that "moves" but one of ideas and ideals just right for the era when it was produced.

And then I finished my evening by watching the first episode in the DEXTER - Season 2 box set which is my next review item. Even though I've seen every episode, I'm looking SO forward to going on this wild ride again. It's SO good, and it certainly deserved its surprise Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series.

I just had a lovely phone call from the wonderful Mrs Frank Loesser, Jo Sullivan, who celebrates in Houston this weekend her mother's 100th birthday.

You'll have to tell her that you have a friend who is named after one of her husband's songs.  :)

Yes, thank you Jane, I have seen it.  I try not to ever post anything (except my often stupid jokes) without first checking Snopes.  George Adamson's murder in 1989 was indeed a tragic end to a beautiful story.

I saw that and checked it on Snopes, too. It made me all weepy!

The TNT website sucks, imho. I can never get any of their clips to play on my Mac, and the producers I work with who have PC's can't get it to work, either.

But I'm sure that if anyone would like to see the 45 sec. next week ons, I know someone who could perhaps send out a link...ahem....

We went up to Marietta to see my godson. On his first day at MDA camp, a kid who thought his wheelchair jopstick looked like a video game control seized hold of it and ran Quinn into a wall and fractured his knee. He's now in a cast (red!) and we went for a visit and to sign his cast.

When I drove off, I heard a strange noise, and discovered my tire was completely flat. I had rolled over a nail somewhere.

A nice teenager from the neighborhood was very anxious to help. He had long hair and glasses and looked like most of my friends did when we were in HS. He had a flashlight on his cell phone so he helped illuminate while we changed the tire and was very helpful. It's always nice when you meet a kid like that!

I forgot to mention that last night I went to a sneak preview of a  movie called GHOST TOWN, with Tea Leoni, Greg Kinnear and Ricky Gervais. I never realized what a marvelous actor he is! (I'd only seen a few minutes of THE OFFICE). I really enjoyed the movie, despite a few holes in the plot.

The event was put together by the board of the Atlanta Film Festival and afterwards there was a  "meet and greet" at a nearby post-house.

It's really funny how everyone know that the place I was working had been bought, and now everyone is hitting on me to move THE CLOSER to their facility. But I think we'll try to stay put for as long as we can. It's very weird though. The new people don't have a clue what we do, or that the people in my room are their clients! They seem to think that we all work for them, when in fact we are helping to pay their salaries! They are extremely nice, so I'm sure eventually they'll figure everything out.

And since I have to get up early to meet a friend for coffee (he's going to follow me to the tire place and then take me to work) I must hit the hay. The friend is a former producer I worked with for years and now heads up the web content division for TNT/TBS. I'm sure he will be interested in the goings on at the post-house, too!

So soon?

I'll be out all day tomorrow.   :'(
