It's my last day at work for the week. I leave for Minneapolis tomorrow morning. I won't be around much from Thursday until Monday morning.

I'll check in and print out my boarding pass later today and then tomorrow I will take the JFK Air Train to the airport. I've done it to Newark but never to JFK. I'm travelin' light (as they say) so the Air Train is the way to go. The E Train to Jamaica and a walk to the Air Train terminal and a quick ride to the airport. I'll be traveling with a cell phone for the first time but no computer (I heard someone in Wisconsin has a computer  ;)). My cousin Ray from Sheffield is coming to Minnesota also. It should be fun, but it's my family so anything can happen  :D

I'm here by myself. I don't like the echo of empty corridors so I will leave for the time being. I hope to come back to more posts.

Wake up people. It's 7:57am!!!

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I've been up for a while now.  There was a fire across the street.  Lots of sirens.  Lots of firemen.  Lots of fire and smoke.  Thankfully, they got the three tenants out of the building - the couple on the top floor were "escorted" from their windows down the ladders.  Alas, the owner of the building who lives on the ground floor is currently on vacation. Thankfully, our sometimes gardener - the one from New Zealand - seemed to know how to contact him, and was also able to tell the firemen that no one else was in the building.

Needless to say, it was quite the wake up call today.

Happiest of birthdays to DR td!!!

That Titanic exhibit that DR td is attending today looks like great fun.  :)

I wonder if it's similar to the one we attended here in Cincinnati.  When we went in, we received the "identity" of a passenger and didn't know until the end whether or not we'd survived.

No pictures?   :(

Glad no one was hurt.

Actually, I did take some pictures.  -I'm just not sure I want to or should post them.  -Well, I guess I could post some of the ones I took of the firemen and local chief of police.. ;)

Seriously...  When I had stepped out to see what was going on, the trucks were already pulled up, and they were getting the people out of the building.  I happened to take a few pics of them firemen helping the couple down the ladders.

*Alas, I just went outside to check things out, and it's pretty much all clear on the street.  The police are helping the three tenants go back into the building to get some of their belongings.  And like clock work, there's an "ambulance chaser" insurance guy trying to cozy up to anyone and everyone for information and names.  -I saw him walk up earlier - "shiny" pants, ill-fitting dress shirt, mis-matched tie, slicked back hair... I guess that is a stereotype!  :-\

The last time I went to England was on a tirp to Sheffield. I liked the town; the people there were very nice!

While we were there, there was a murderer loose who had knifed a couple of people. I wondered if it was done with one of those famous  Sheffield knives...

Good morning, all! I slept until 9 am, and I have various and sundry projects today: initiate the MTI work on THE MOST HAPPY FELA, hit the NYPL and maybe see a movie, DR Jose?

I thought, BK, your assessment of FOLLIES was excellent, there's been nothing like the original and will never be again. Of course, I feel the same way about the oiginal productions of COMPANY, HELLO, DOLLY!, 1776, and several others I was lucky to have seen. The irony is that I was lucky to see superb Lincoln Center revivals of CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA!, and KISMET years ago, not to mention the revivals of ON YOUR TOES and OKLAHOMA! at the Palace, and I find "creative folk" today are unable to approach that work today.  The only exception I've seen is the current SOUTH PACIFIC.

On the other hand, I saw Kenley productions of FINIAN'S RAINBOW and WHERE'S CHARLEY? and Cincinnati Opera productions of THE MUSIC MAN and CAROUSEL that do make some of the past 20 years' inept revivals look like genius, so what do I know?

re: my bbq inquiry from last night (i said that i had turned off the gas but one burner was left on and 2 hours later it was still lit).

I asked my dad and he thinks i didn't turn off the gas. But i am sure i did, since i doublechecked it when i noticed one side was still lit (and it is clearly marked "close" and open").

His other idea is possibly there is a bit of gas leaking?  Which does not sound like a good thing!

I'm annoyed with myself that i left one burner on. I never do that. But i decided to make some hot dogs after i'd already cooked. So i turned off one side (or i thought i did). When i do the close the gas ritual at the end it is easier to turn everything off at once.

I start to believe something is really going to happen when I see cover art like that. So I was very escited. I'm excited about DR. SYN, too, but since no one here has expressed much interest in it besides me, I didn't waste space in the photo file uploading a picture of it, too.

I saw the UPS man drop a box off on the side porch. I don't think that's from Disney, so the Blu-ray that comes out next week still isn't here. I suspect that's going to be more Paramount TV box sets (NCIS I know is coming and something else, too.)

I think almost everyone finds that remakes and redos of things they've seen the originals of are lacking in various ways.

I've never been satisfied with any recording of "Follies" other than the original.  I had the score LP with me on my first overseas tour of duty.  When I bought my first component stereo system, it was "Follies" that was played on it the first time.

I cannot imagine ever being satisfied with any performance that doesn't equal or surpass what I can hear on that cast recording.

That said, I don't think any of the screaming, cheering fans at revivals/revisals deserve rebuke or disdain.  They've never seen the original.  That they are listeing to and loving a Sondheim score performed live should be more reason for celebration rather than censure.

Most people never get to see the original Broadway production of anything.  If one were to insist upon equal/better treatment of the material, no revival/revisal would "ever" be done.  And that would be tragic.

I can play for just a bit, then must be off to the dentist. When I last saw him a couple months ago he asked if I had vacation plans for the summer. I said no. He replied, "Well, now you'll be able to come to the dentist." Dentists always have a strange sense of humor.

Spot on. I will say, though, that if the production is at all professional, I almost always have found something interesting and different about it, even if it doesn't match up with the original.

There were several moments in the Roundabout Follies that I thought were wonderful and searing (Joan Roberts, the original Laurie in Oklahoma, singing "One More Kiss," the Ben/Sally ghost embrace, Judith Ivey's haunting "Losing My Mind," and damned if the final exit didn't have me bawling both times I saw it), but it's a hard show to make work.

Sometimes, with revivals, I sometimes think the less the director knows, the better. I've seen a bunch of productions of Company, and the two best ones were ones where the director got the hell out of the way of the production and just presented the story without apology (For my money, Sam Mendes's concept was an abomination that made the show more dated than it had any right being). The best Bobby I ever saw was in an amateur production, played by an actor who hadn't been on stage in over a decade, but who absolutely nailed the character.

I've also had the thrill of seeing several classic performers reprise their songs decades later (Pam Myers with "Another Hundred People," Donna McKechnie with "Music and the Mirror," Priscilla Lopez with "Nothing," and Comden & Green with most of their club act), and I will treasure those memories till the day I die.

I have no problem with screaming cheering fans IF the screaming and cheering is earned, which this was not.  They came to scream and cheer at their favorite performers and because many of them are youngsters who've been raised on American Idol and think that that sort of behavior in the theater is appropriate.  In the case of what I was hearing on this Encores Follies DVD, it doesn't sound like they're cheering the material so much as the "event" and their favorite people.  I can also guarantee you that that sort of overt, insane overreaction was normally NOT part of the original production, except for the closing weeks, when it was all fans of the show, and even then I'd guess it didn't approach this crazy sort of overreaction we have today.

Tragic consequences for a mother of three and grandmother of one...I am sad to see that AOL published this photo.  Other people in the same circumstance certainly have more privacy than a celebrity does - but seeing that she is cared for and alive is something, I guess.

Prayers can help.  Annette lost her dear mother last year, her second marriage has been rocky since then, but all three of her children and her ex-husband Jack are a great support group.

She of course has her fans, which must be small recompense to her now - but she was an important icon of her generation, and certainly went as far as a little talent and some great looks could take her.  Whatever it is that makes the public respond to you, Annette had it.

By all accounts she is a sweet person, and true friend, and a great mother.

She is almost like a member of the family to some of us.  And I hate to think of the day when we'll read her final headline.   :'(

I didn't mean to slight her husband Glen Holt who has supported her through years of MS and its consequences.  He is very close to her, even though they don't officially share the house....he lives on his ranch while Annette is in town.

Again, to be clear, since what I wrote seems to be going in a direction I didn't intend - I have NO problems with revivals that are GOOD, EXCELLENT, or GREAT.  If I see one like that, my memories of the original (if I have seen it) go right out the window.  If the director presents the show in a good staging, and he understands the show, and the cast is terrific, great.  I found none of those things in evidence about this Follies.  I'm not generalizing (which is what RLP's post makes it seem like) - I'm talking about THIS Follies (and to a lesser extent a couple of other Follies) that simply don't work.  If they work for others, that's great.  I have an acute ear, audience reaction-wise, and for me it's very easy to tell who the people are who've come there to scream and whoop no matter WHAT is being presented to them.

I saw a theater in the round production of The Most Happy Fella - I'd grown up listening to its cast album, of course - it was amazing.  Why?  Because the director knew what the show was about and presented it.  Why else?  Because Robert Weede and Art Lund were recreating their roles ten years later.  Why else?  Because every other member of that cast was on the same page as the director and the two stars.

I've seen other productions of other classics that were every bit as good as the original.  So, let's not misrepresent what my thoughts in today's notes were about.

Well I am officially quite excited.  The church where I Music Direct has a huge, auditorium-like performing space and I suggested when they hired me we should do an annual fundraising concert series.  I have called in a lot of favors and we have an incredible series booked.  Some of these names some of you will know, but all of them are A-listers in the Northwest, and several are nationally and internationally famous.

September Susannah Mars
October  a little guy named JMK and his bossa nova group
November  Tobias Andersen in "Darrow"
December  pianist John Nilsen
January  Linda Hornbuckle with multi-Grammy nominee Janice Scroggins
February Melinda Strobel in "Women of the Wild West"
March  John Doan
April  an Improv group someone else booked, so I'm clueless :P
May  internationally famous mime Daniel Stein in Timepiece*
June  pianist Michael Allen Harrison

Whom shall I book for the second season?  Oy!

*Curious if any of you Angelinos or NYC-ites know or have seen Danny in performance.  He is probably the most famous mime in the world post-Marceau.  And guess what?  He's DW Betsy's cousin!

I'm just astounded reading the rationalizations of a young theatre-goer over at All That Chat who feels there is nothing at all wrong with singing along with the performers [from the audience] at a musical.

Re Encores shows -  I've always thought of these four-to-five performance Encores presentations as "events" rather than real revivals.  These are sometimes casts you couldn't get together for a regular run.  While I myself didn't actually scream and holler at the Encores Follies performance I saw, I totally understood about the audience feeling they were at a special event of sorts rather than at a revival, because of the nature of the presentation (only 5 performances, extended to 6 by insane popular demand).

(This differs greatly from the summer Encores shows, which are revivals in several-week runs.)

It is crazy.  If they need to i guess they can sing and dance during the curtain call to shows like MAMMA MIA. But I think i would go crazy if anyone near me in the theatre started to sing!

I didn't mean to slight her husband Glen Holt who has supported her through years of MS and its consequences.  He is very close to her, even though they don't officially share the house....he lives on his ranch while Annette is in town.

The disease takes its toll on everyone.  It is nice to see she gets out of the house.

BK -  The confusion over where Follies fit in with the Encores series is logical.  There was much chat-board debate about whether Follies was really a rarely-revived show so as to appropriately be part of the regular Encores season.  And I'd bet if they had the Summer Stars series then, Follies (along with Bye Bye Birdie and Pajama game) would have seemed a more logical fit for their Summer Stars.  But the tremendous financial boon of a Follies or Bye Bye Birdie or Pajama Game (all in the regular series, while Gypsy amd Damn Yankees were Summer Star shows) helps pay for the Sweet Adelines and Junos and Purlies of the regular series, or so the chat goes.

I'm back from a loverly lunch and fun movie with our DR Jose. As to THE MUMMY 3, I'd see it again in a second: it's like the  big roller coaster you love at your favorite amusement park:exciting takeoff, fun climb, and  lots of laughs, screams, and enormous highs and lows in about an hour and 45 minutes.  Lots of CGI, of course, but the art direction and design are both heavily nostalgic and quite beautiful at times. I don't know why the original leading lady isn't back. Perhaps she didn't like to be playing mother of a grown son - there's a bit of Indiana Jones 3 in the screenpklay - but I had a great time.

Nursie, I think you will love it.

DR MBarnum, in 40 years you'll be begging BF for an in-depth interview, and that is indeed  a euphemism.

I'm wondering if the fact that she's now an Oscar winner had something to do with her not signing on for this third trip. I'm just guessing; I have no knowledge one way or other.

I was disappointed to find that MAD MEN episode 2 wasn't up on HD On Demand yet, so I settled for - wait for it - SAVING GRACE.

Yep, I gave it another chance. Bailey Chase is so cute and I adore Ken Johnson, so the two of them ALMOST make me wish I were still a regular viewer. But the mystery was very average, the angel stuff is a turnoff, and Hunter brays almost all of her dialog, and it's just like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Gosh we see these things so differently.  Hunter, to me, is excellent in the role.  No braying to these ears and I appreciate her authentic accent.  Of the two hours I watched the other night, I thought "Saving Grace" just as well-written as "The Closer."

How significant a role was Evy's in this film?  Weisz was right up there with Frasier in the first two films.  If this film is more a boy's adventure with Frasier and Jet Li front-and-center along with the grown-up son, I wouldn't think Weisz would have any compelling reason to continue in a role that was diminished.

She's had a baby and has two films in post-production for 2008.  The only reason she might have done it was for "the work", and that doesn't seem to be a problem.

We used to have people singing along to the songs in FOREVER PLAID all the time. It is strange when you're not used to it.

It's really quite simple... if you're disturbing others, cut it out. There are shows at which you should expect some audience involvement (any of the Disney musicals, fr'instance), but if someone's getting out of their seat, well, you've crossed the line.

As a somewhat over-enthusiastic theatergoer, my past sins I confess today:

1) as a young lad, I caught the revivial of Joseph (starring Michael Damian and Kelli Rabke) at the Minskoff. This was the first time I saw a show where I knew the entire score by heart, and was mouthing along to myself (or so I thought). At curtain call, the lady "of a certain age" sitting next to me turned and asked "so, when are you joining the cast?" I like to believe that I was not disturbing her too much, and that she was more amused than annoyed.

2) in later years, at the umpteenth Rent performance, I would just turn to the people behind me and say "smack me upside the head if I'm bothering you. You paid to see the show on stage, not my re-enactment."

3) As a young broke college student, I would frequently catch shows from standing room. This was the ideal location for an over-exuberant audience member, since I wasn't in front of anybody, and if I took a step back, nobody could hear me either. The ushers and bar staff of the Palace (when Beauty and the Beast was playing there) and the New Amsterdam unquestionable have, er, interesting memories of the goofy-looking Jewish kid who was acting along to the whole show.

To defend myself, I tried to be aware of the people around me, and the late Clark Gesner, after the last performance of the revivial of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, actually told me how happy he was to see someone so thoroughly enjoying himself at his show.

Comparatively, since I saw both shows for the first time on Monday night, Sedgwick's stilted syntax and faux southern accent sounds like "corn" to mine.  Her sincerity shines through, but that vocal delivery must take a lot of effort.

I have the original "The Mummy" (Brendan Frasier version, that is) on standard DVD.  I broke down and got that one and "The Mummy Returns" on HD DVD and don't regret it for a minute.  Spectacular filmmaking, IMO.

And it doesn't take itself seriously.  That's its saving grace (so to speak, no pun intended on another topic of discussion).

A few years ago, I went to see a friend of mine who was playing The Scarecrow in THE WIZARD OF OZ.  When Dorothy and friends arrived at the scary part of the forest and said,

"Lions!  And tigers!  And bears!"

Without even thinking I said right along with them, "Oh my!"  It could have been really embarrassing, except that the entire audience said it with me.  Then when we realized what we had done, we all started laughing.  I don't know if it happened every performance, but it did that night.

Unfortunately no.  The other day I was thinking about that, and I doubt I would fit thru the hatch now.  We were out there with the team from RMS Titanic and a crew from the Discovery Channel.  They were attempting to raise the section of the hull (that is now on tour), but the efforts were cut short by two hurricanes that were closing in on us.  The piece was about 200 ft. from the surface when the lines snapped.

As for the TCB T.O.D.-

"Cinema Paradiso" - "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" (Main Title Theme)
"Cinema Paradiso" - "Tema d'Amore" (Love Theme) - Which I didn't realize until just now that it was composed by Andrea Morricone.

Der Brucer wants me to post this alert:

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]ALERT ALERT ALERT...  Randy Newman will be performing on Letterman tonight.  THAT IS ALL...[/move]

I was planning on tuning in to see if I really do want to buy his new album.  Alas, I'm sort of agreeing with most of the mainstream viewers who think that his new album of original songs is, in a sense, almost "too Randy Newman".  I've listened to a bunch of clips, and downloaded the first single, and... Well...  We'll see...

Was she eating something of interest before the hives popped up?  I hope it was only from a summer plant she got into.

After "The Mummy 3" and DR elmore, I walked down Broadway to the Theatre District to meet up with Jason for some dinner and a catch-up session.  He just got back into town after a spending a little over a week back home in Kentucky.  He's doing well, and sends his best to everyone.  And it's also looking hopeful, hopefully, that he'll have some work after A Chorus Line closes next weekend.

I  saw that portion of the hull that's in the exhibition. One of the things that amazed me the most on the Exhibition were the olives in the bottle after all these years

I only worked about 3 hours today.  It was a good day.  I spent most of the morning at the coffee shop, went to lunch with a friend, came home early and mowed most of the lawn.  I always get overheated when I mow, but it feels good to do that from time to time and after a cool shower, lots of water and resting a little I'm always fine

I start to believe something is really going to happen when I see cover art like that. So I was very escited. I'm excited about DR. SYN, too, but since no one here has expressed much interest in it besides me, I didn't waste space in the photo file uploading a picture of it, too.

I will be buying DR. SYN and I am very excited. I have even visited Romney and Dymchurch (Dr. Syn's Chruch) as well as New Romney, where the beginning of HALF-A-SIXPENCE (or maybe it was just H.G. Well's book KIPPS) was set. I'm thinking of possibily going back to that area if we have a break around November and if I can afford it, time-wise and cash-wise.

I had to do an errand in Reseda, and I had a craving for a burger, so I stopped at Islands and had the Big Wave, which has transmogrified into a Small Wave.  I couldn't believe how small it's gotten - I've been going to Islands for over twenty years and the Big Wave has always been a nice, big burger that took up the whole basket that it came in - it was so big it came with a knife to cut it.  Now they have a new thing - free fries in the basket - I asked our server how many fries and she told me one handful.  In order to make room for the free fries they have cut the burger size in half.  Good for my diet, but not a Big Wave at all.  So, even though I ate a burger it was not a big one, and the fries were not sufficient to cause me problems especially given the two and a half mile run and the two mile walk.  And this was my once a week splurge, so it won't be a prob.  I really enjoyed it, too.

Comparatively, since I saw both shows for the first time on Monday night, Sedgwick's stilted syntax and faux southern accent sounds like "corn" to mine.  Her sincerity shines through, but that vocal delivery must take a lot of effort.

Kyra's accent would bug me and sound fake to me if I didn't know several people who have a very similar accent. But Holly Hunter seems to throw away a lot of her lines, and her shpeech shounds annoying to my earsh.

Are all the links still available?  I have a program on my home computer that can capture YouTube-type (.flv) video clips, which those are.  I can't put them on a DVD to watch in a regular DVD player, but I could put them on a CD-ROM so that you could watch them on your computer.  Would that be okay?

PROJECT RUNWAY tonight. The challenge didn't interest me much, but I did like several of the designs (but not the one that placed second).

What the bottom two people were thinking I just really don't know. I do think the right person went home as the designs have been lackluster for awhile.

As for Stella, how much longer can she coast through this with the same (uninteresting) look and style?

Jim Rambo who is playing R F Simpson wears a nice double breasted tuxedo, everyone else is wearing a cummerbund, he found one and wore it very high on his chest so it could be seen.....I told him to ask Shelly about it.

Then when she told him not to wear it, I decided to pull my black/white cow design cummerbund like a halter to make her laugh.  It did.

Then while we were waiting to go on....from the lobby, Ben Fisher who plays Rod came around the corner with his cummerbund down in front of his fly.

I told Shelly (who is playing Mrs R F Simpson) that it was weird that everyone in the cast was wearing their cummerbunds as either brassieres or jockstraps - and we got so tickled it was a moment before we could go on.

I made a chart for the dressing room to explain to the boys that the cummerbund zone is NOT the same as the STRIKE zone.

Jrand, you can order the usual advance way - paypal to kritzerland@adelphia.net.  19.98 plus 3.75 for shipping.

Sad to see the web designer did not get the title up tonight - she promised she'd try, but it's not there.  I'm sorry, but it's about an hour's worth of work.  She did promise that if it didn't go up tonight it would be up for sure tomorrow, and by tomorrow I hope to hell it's morning, which would be her noon.

She did say that I could have someone else do it, that she'd send the files of the site to a new person, which I find not very sporting.  I do so few updates and additions that I really wish it could all just happen faster.

I'll check and see what the problem is, der Brucer.  And anyone who orders Scent Of Mystery can have the 3.50 shipping - once it's on the site, it's 3.75.
