Darn, I missed the cut for posting for Wednesday.  Saw the tour of The Drowsy Chaperone and I'm still laughing and crying.  So good that I'm going back and taking the DP and our pal Marc on Saturday.  Such a great show.

Thats all for now.  Going to read yesterdays notes and catch up on the posts.

Good Morning.

What are Matthew and Laura doing up at this hour? It's 4:10am in New York.

I'm up because I'm going to the airport in a couple of hours.

As I said yesterday, i won't be around much until Sunday night or Monday morning but

"If you can see me, I'll be there" (an Evening Primrose reference).

Goodnight all you people out there in the dark. See you on Sunday.

Good morning, all! Back to Lady of the Slipper. The primary question is, are my NYPL notes here or at Toyland?

Little else is going on today. At 4:30, I'm going to see JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH in 3-D before it vanishes. I'm also wondering why it's taking a certain singer two months to pay me for my work!

There was some good news yesterday: while we haven't sold my dad's property, it keeps going up in value because of the new hospital behind it and the 3.5 acres are now worth $275,000/acre. The State of Ohio bought 0.5 acres 10 feets of land from the property edging the highway to widen Route 122, so my brothers and I just made $53,000, which we will divide three ways when he payment's made in 4-6 weeks.  So, if I don't work the remainder of the year, I'll be fine.  Send that check soon, boys!

DR Jane, re: your comments last night about my niece's hives.

I don't think it was any type of summer plant. It was raining all day and she did not go outside to play.

As for food, she was at daycare and they don't usually give them anything that could cause allergic reactions. But my sis will ask if they ate anything different. The funny thing is that my niece hates pizza (won't eat it). But they let the kids make themselves pizzas (that they called pizza). And without the sauce on it, my niece liked it!

The doctor said that unless it is a serious reaction to something, we will probably never know what the cause was.

>>Then I had to do a couple more errands, and I had my one and only meal at Islands – a burger (much smaller than they used to make) and a few fries. That’s all I ate all day.

And that's why it's taking you so long to lose weight, and that's why, as soon as you go off your diet, you will regain any weight you lost and probably 10 pounds as well.

By eating only 1,000 calories a day, your body thinks its starving and is conserving as much energy as possible. And when you start eating more than 1,000 calories a day, your body is going to take all those "extra" calories and put them into fat and make sure they don't go away.

I know it sounds paradoxical, but if you'd eat 2,000 calories a day, you'd lose just as much weight, and you'd have a much better chance of keeping it off.

No need to take my word for it. Talk to your nutritionist.

I never saw Donna Murphy's Anna, but the Forbidden Broadway spoof of that production will eternally live in my mind (They had the actress playing Fosca-as-Anna, complete with huge mole, and sang "Shall we Boink?" lampooning the production's apparent oversexed subthemes, while throwing in a "La Bamba" reference or two.)

I don't know the roles well enough to do these "worst cast" things, but Carol Channing's Anna would be one that would scare me...

But i do agree with some of what you wrote. The whole thing about the body thinking it is starving itself is well documented.

I actually think the reason BK is losing weight now is because of the jogging more than what he is eating.

I personally am not into calorie counting at all. I think it's more important to eat healthier foods. And to eat at least 3 times a day.

HA!  I just did a run of Thoroughly Modern Millie and played the harp book on synth.  One might think that sounds easy, (yet, rather boring) but it's not!  I had a keyboard with a glissando setting and i used that for the big "sweeps", but the rest, I played.  I realized it takes a lot of finesse to make a synth sound like a harp.  It was also a good way to catch up on crosswords.  (Yawn.....)  It was like... play a gliss, count rests, play a gliss, count rests.  TACIT a number, do a crossword.... Repeat.

*But it could be worse... You could be playing synth timpani...  For a Mozart opera.  ;)

DR Edisaurus:

Oh, I know people -- women, most particularly -- who speak like Holly and Kyra do in their respective shows.

Each method of speaking requires some internal adjustments for the listener, but once acclimated, both can be "handled."  I find the stilted syntax much more difficult to listen to than "sh" sounds -- I keep mentally fixating on the staccato-like vocal process involved.

None of the women I've known who speak as Kyra does in "The Closer" are remotely as interesting as Sedgewick and tend toward preciousness rather than substance.

Of the women who speak a la Ms. Hunter, I can only say they scare the hell out of me, for the most part.

Last night's "Project Runway":

A somewhat interesting challenge, especially given that Apollo Ohno was a judge.  He made some very interesting comments, too.

The winner was my second choice.  Terri's outfit was my pick for best, and I'm certain it was a toss-up for the judges.  The winner, however, works hard and deserved the recognization, IMO.

Fully concur with MattH about the bottom two.  The right person went home, although a double-elimination might have been just fine given the survivor's attitude and cluelessness about the challenge.

I personally am not into calorie counting at all. I think it's more important to eat healthier foods. And to eat at least 3 times a day.

It doesn't matter what you count, if you consume more calories than you burn up - you gain; eat less calories than you burn up, you lose. "Healthy foods" have little to do with wain gain/loss - a high calorie "health diet" will add pounds and a low calorie "unhealthy" diet will lose pounds.

How did she explain that "unwed mothers" anomaly, then?     :)

In the moral days of yore, there were no "unwed mothers" - women with "difficulties" were whisked out of public view until the "problem" was "resolved".

der Brucer

When I was at the Naval Academy a fellow midshipman got his girl "in that way" - he refused to marry her (he would have been booted out had he done so) and her family (Texas) threw her out. We got her a plane ticket to DC and my future Mother-In-Law picked her up at the airport, put a wedding ring on her finger, and took her home to stay (and arranged for the baby's private adoption). Even after graduation the louse of a mid refused to have anything to do with her. Things worked out for the girl - she went back to Texas, married a soon-to-be successful Oklahoma business man and moved to Oklahoma city and raised a lovely family.

Who knows how fast the last 400 will go, but it's very heartening to have a good day like this.  I just wish I could get to the dealer money faster, but I should have discs in a couple of weeks, and payment right after that.

If the singer is Cheyenne Jackson, take it out in trade.  Hmm, perhaps Brendan Fraser needs some orchestrations done!

That was very nice of your future mother in-law.  I can't imagine kicking my child out, and giving up my grand child.  I'm glad the friend married well, and not to the jerk.

Of course, there's always a Joss Whedon cast:

KING -  David Boreanaz
ANNA -  Juliet Landau
TUPTIM - Sarah Michelle Gellar
LUN THA - Nathan Fillion
LADY THIANG - Alyson Hannigan
KRALAHOME - James Marsters
SIR EDWARD - Christian Kane

Wait just one damn second!  If Nathan Fillion is playing Lun Tha, nobody is playing Tuptim but me!

Good Evening!

Another day in New York City.  Another wonderful day in New York City.

First of all, the weather was glorious.  Summer was definitely in the air, but the humidity was comfortable, and the sun was shining.  Best of all, the forecasted rain and storms held off (so far - I'm seeing thunderstorm and tornado(!) warnings on the TV screen right now).  It made for a perfect afternoon for walking around the UWS.

And while walking around the UWS, I happened to come across a cheese tasting at Barzini's... YUM!  Lots of varieties, lots of flavors, lots of different scents.  ;)  All very good.

Then it was off to 84th Street to meet up with DR elmore to see "Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D".  Fun, fun, fun.

Then, if I'm remembering correctly, I believe there might have been some macaroni and cheese, and an ice cream sandwich somewhere during my walks today.  ;)

Back from a two-and-a-half mile jog and a brisk two-mile walk.  The walk, as was the case yesterday, was really the hard part - my back goes berserk.  I'm fine now and must shower and be on my way to lunch with former dear reader Hisaka.

Hmm... If walking is making your back hurt, it sounds like you're not stretching before nor after your run/walk.  After is more important since it will also help get your spine back in alignment after all the "bouncing".  If your back continues to hurt, then I'd suggest taking a day or two off, or else you may end up doing some damage back there.

*Also - How old are are your running shoes?  They can wear out faster than you think - especially if you use them for daily walking around too.  A "crushed sole" can cause a lot of back issues.  -Trust me on this one - I know from experience.

**And since you are running every day - and not taking a day off in between runs - you might want to invest in another pair of running shoes, and alternate them from day to day.

One of our departmental secretaries volunteered to clean out the refrigerator that we all share.  It's pretty near my desk and she's been bringing specimens to me, saying, "What do you think this used to be?"  People can be such pigs sometimes and Sherry is a real trouper to do this awful job.

When I was a regular at Arena Stage, they went through many different "plans" to deal with food left in the staff/company refrigerators over the years.  Some worked better than others, but they finally settled on something pretty foolproof.  The sign read as follows:

"Please Note: This refrigerator is NOT your "refrigerator-away-from-home".  It is provided for staff and company members to store their food while they are working here on a daily basis.  Therefore, every Friday afternoon, the janitorial staff has been instructed to empty out the fridge completely.  Any and all food and drink will be thrown out sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 on Friday afternoon.  Thank You."

It worked - and no one had to worry about the whole "When in doubt, throw it out," dilemma.

I did have time to watch the preview of the new MUMMY film on the disc. Looked like fun. (Some was from the film, some of the shots were behind-the-scenes kind of stuff.) It only lasted about 3 minutes.

Rehearsal is over, then I accompanied the Druxman's to Jerry's Deli (I didn't eat), and then I had to deal with a little e-mail I received from the MD of the Bacharach show - he may no longer be the MD.  I sometimes forget how uppity he gets, and he HATED my idea for a song and said "maybe I'm not the guy for this if you're going to make fun of the songs."  Now, this was one number, not all the songs, nor would we be making fun of the number.  I told him that I thought that he was the right guy for the job, but the one thing he wasn't going to be EVER was the director, and that the buck stops with me, not him.  I told him to back out if he couldn't deal with collaboration, and I also reminded him that the three Liz Callaway albums were TOTAL collaborations (I think they really imagine they did it all themselves) - I had total input and control over all three CDs and she and the CDs and he were all better for it.  I said that no idea could be shot down so coldly without a discussion first.  Do we have to do the number?  No, if there's a good reason not to.  Do we have to talk about it?  Absolutely.  I don't think he'd like it if he came to me with some idea he thought was clever only to have me say "Gee, I don't know if I want you involved it THAT'S the kind of thing you're coming up with."  Feh.

There is a big difference between "making fun of the songs" and "having fun with the songs" - and I suspect you were suggesting the latter. I suspect a little self-referential levity would add a welcome spice to the proceedings.
