Well, you've read the notes, the notes, unlike the days, did not disappear, and now it is time for you to post until the disappearing cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VEXILLOLOGY!
-
I see that this is, in fact, a BIG birthday for der Brucer.

This was my sister's suggestions for yesterday's TOD:
Anna - Carol Channing
King - Harvey Fierstein or Mel Brooks ("It's good to be the king!")
I thought that was pretty funny! :)
-
Saw Dolly Parton in concert last night in the Theater of the Clouds here in Portland and she was amazing! Good Lord, no one would ever know that woman was 62! I hope I have that much energy when I'm that age! She looks incredible as well. 3rd row seats from front...great seats!

Happy happy happy birthday to Der Brucer
-
What we need is an alphabetical list of all the people who wish der Brucer a happy birthday.
Or maybe not.
-
Good morning, all! Where the hell has this year gone?
Today, more edits in Toyland, perhaps an emergency call to my "banker" since I know now why my concert payment is now 6 weeks late, and some work on two Christmas arrangements for the Men's Chorus, which will explain spme of the TOD.
DR Jose, Simon Legree is sooooo right, you sharp little devil! Of course, you are Tilly the Hon.

Hey, I got promoted to "Full Member".
:)
So, how many more postings do I have to do to become a HHW god?
::)
-
I don't think I'm going to be doing much DVD watching this weekend, since BK and I will be at rehearsals for the staged reading of my musical, HAIL ON THE CHIEF.
If I do get in front of the TV, I'll probably watch more episodes of PRISON BREAK, Season 3, or maybe even STREET KINGS.
-
Friday morning greetings! I'm home today due to 2 nosebleeds, which are pretty spectacular events when you've been on blood thinners for almost 2 months. My doctor wants to see me in about 20 minutes, so I'll have a fuller report after that.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR der Brucer - and thanks for serenading me last night!
-
If any of you folks in the Los Angeles area would like to attend one of the 2 readings of HAIL ON THE CHIEF, please let either myself or BK know. Seating is limited.
They will be on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8pm at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood.

As i said yesterday i wanted katee to win. I was very glad they decided to have a prize for the top girl. For some reason the girls (whether they are great or not) seem to never get the votes. This really bugs me.
I would have preferred will to win. Or katee. And then twitch. I was happy for joshua. He seems nice. He lucked out to me having katee be his original partner. Because the original pairings really helped people form their opinions. And every single dance that katee did i loved (i can't even say that for will). I am surprised that he won. And surprised that he would be america's favorite. He did do great.
i'm adding this: i totally forgot that a girl did win once! but for some reason mostly the girls don't get the votes. I guess the most ironic part of one girl winning, is that that was the only season the girl wasn't my favorite! (i loved heidi best in her season, and katee best in hers!)

Good! We are worried about what the impact will be for THE CLOSER.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
Hmmm...
Not much really. ???
*And I've also paid two visits to the Virgin Megastore - both the Times Square and the Union Square locations - this week and did not buy anything. Nothing. Which surprised even me. However, they just added some 2-Disc DVD sets - including "The Maltese Falcon" and some other classics - to their $10 Sale, so... We shall see.
-
Tonight on tv for me:
The first 2 episodes of season 2's Torchwood.
Summer Olympics (although the opening ceremonies were already on here live, although i did not watch any).
I do plan on watching the Olympics. I love the summer olympics, especially swimming. Although since canada has so few great athletes i will usually watch any sport where anyone of interest performs.
I am curious, in the US are the olympics on a bunch of stations? Or do you only get the nightly telecasts that i get on nbc?
Here i believe cbc covers live from like 6am -noon (live) and then from 6pm or 7pm-night time. And their sister station bold is carrying the extra stuff.

We had a rousing opening night....completely sold out. Of course people were still arriving during the curtain speech, so I helped them find their way to their seats.
Each number received generous applause, and the audience was great, responding to each number and scene. The movie brings us so much GOODWILL, and they WANT to love us, so it was a joy to hear the reactions and talk to people afterward!
A few awkward moments, but hopefully those will be done away with tonight. I got ALL my laughs and threw in a couple of "Lucy" takes for good measure....so let the run continue!

Possible SPOILAGE for BB10
re: last night's BIG BROTHER 10 eviction and hoh comp
I'm curious what those still watching thought of the eviction and woh won hoh. If you want to see the evictee on the Early show. It's supposed to be interesting. I will watching him on housecalls today too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE_y7JeJTIw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE_y7JeJTIw)
The eviction was interesting inasmuch as Jessie totally thought he was "all that." He seemed to think he OWNED the house and constantly made it clear the believed his game was pure as the driven snow in integrity. His pompous ego, however, was his downfall. And his antics as a nominee for eviction did him no favors. Jessie was also dishonest many times in his pronouncements about people and his own worthiness. The unexamined life, etc., etc., and so forth.
That said, it was interesting -- and predictable -- that Michelle would win HOH. More interesting, however, was the turncoat joy of April and Ollie and Jerry.
Suddenly, the house is split evenly again....and I cannot figure out why that happened.
I despise April. I have no respect for Ollie and I'm sick to death of Jerry. They belong with Michelle.
It will be interesting to see who Michelle nominates in addition to Libra. Jerry seems to be under the impression that Memphis was supposed to go last night and I bet he thinks it will happen next week. But if anything is true, it's that Michelle and Memphis are allies, so Jerry will have to get over it.
I'm thinking April might nominate Keesha to join Libra on the block. And that will be interesting because Memphis has a side alliance with Keesha.
How the next few days go will be interesting to watch.

Curtain speech at 8 p.m. - but last night it was delayed because the people kept coming in ... and coming in ... and coming in...and the ushers (volunteers from the local Retirement Community) are a bit slow tearing tickets and handing out programs, don't you know. 8)
So after Ric finished talking and announcing the 2009 season and telling a few jokes, we didn't even get started until almost 8:15! :P

Did you happen to watch that link i posted from the Early Show? OMG when julie told him it was america's vote that evicted him. Well let's just say he was not gracious. I would think michelle would nominate libra and either dan (for giving his word and going back on it) or keesha. I'm thinking michelle and memphis would still be good. REmember there was the jamm alliance (jessie/angie/michelle/memphis). So i would think there is the potential for them to work together. However memphis knew he was safe and didn't let on. So pehaps april/ollie/jerry/michelle will stick together and the others will be their enemies. The next days will definitely be good.

BB10....
Was thrilled to see Jessie leave...although I think Memphis is a much bigger threat to others in the house...you could tell that Jessie was not a happy camper, and not a very good sport. I was very, very unhappy that Michelle won HOH...blech! I am sure that Libra, Keesha or Dan will be nominated...like one will be back doored. You could sure feel the disappointment when Michelle won.
-
Whoosh! My comment was a misfire, then. It had nothing to do with prostitution.
It had to do with the word "Virgin".
Oh, then I guess my initial response was a misfire. Hmm...
Maybe I should have said that I go there for the nostalgia.
;)
-
Cast and staff.....the girls in the front in the vests and hats are the stage crew - they are all high school seniors and are BEE-YOO-TEE-FULL and sweet.
Lina's red dress doesn't show up well in the picture - it is laced with gold thread and just shimmers under the lights....nice group....the usual backstage drama, but I forgot what it was like to be IN a big musical. Fun, tiring, and LOTS of clothes! ;D
-
Hmm... Brett Favre as a Jet. Hmm...
These legendary quarterbacks moving to another team rather than being forced out of their starter positions hardly ever works to anyone's advantage.
Joe Montana was heartbreakingly ineffective with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 49ers decided to start Steve Young. Many other players who were aging stars made lackluster transfers to other teams before going gently, if achingly, into that good night.
Of course, if ever a team had "Cinderella" potential, it has always been the Jets. So...Favre MAY do well there for a year...or two.

Oh, then I guess my initial response was a misfire. Hmm...
Maybe I should have said that I go there for the nostalgia.

I almost thought that too when the initial news reports kept calling him "Broadway Brett". -I almost thought the Weisslers had cast him as Billy Flynn in Chicago. ;)
-
They re-did that bollywood number on so you think you can dance last night. It was one of the judges favorite numbers!
-
Jrand - Congrats on your opening.
And I preach a little here, but I hope others (not on HHW) who complain about movies being adapted to musicals will consider that very goodwill factor (much of the audience WANTING to love the stage show when it's a staging of something they're familiar with and love) before complaining. Putting on theatre is such a big risk at all levels, as much on the local level as in L.A. and Chicago and London and NYC, that a show should have the benefit of goodwill of the audience whenever it can get it - and IMHO producers should not be chastised for wanting the chance of that audience goodwill when they can get it.
-
DR Jennifer: Thanks for the youtube link. Yes, Jessie was upset. If they'd waited until this morning to talk to him, he might have been a bit more gracious. I was amused that he thinks he would have been more fun to keep in the house than Memphis. It's all, always, about "him", though. :D
I'm guessing his reaction to Dan's being America's Player might have had something to do with that sob story Dan told him that got them into a 10-second embrace. Jessie now realizes he was played.

I don't recall any "backdooring" being successful this season. Jessie saved himself with the first veto win, but all the other nominations have stood up.
First, we have to see the nominees. Then we have to see who wins the veto.

Thanks, everyone, for the vibes. I predicted to DH Richard on the way to the doctor's office that I'd have a blood test and my blood thinner dosage may be adjusted. Sure enough, they drew blood and I'm awaiting the late afternoon call that tells me what dosage to take this evening and when to have my next test.
The good news is that today's appointment took care of the issues to be discussed at the one scheduled for this coming Monday, so now I'll have my day off to myself.

Warning, I’m about to whine big time.
For the last year relatives we have never met have planned a trip from England to visit us. I’ve been very excited and now, one week before they arrive, I have a very raw throat. I need to bake, clean, cook & do loads of the usual stuff before they arrive. I cannot afford to be sick. I’m hoping the raw throat is due to the heavy layer of smoke in the air & both will be gone by tomorrow.
Of greater concern, Keith’s mother is in the hospital with a twisted bowel obstruction. Chances are she will have surgery today.

Nice to see your handsome face, DR Druxy!A "Name Game Monday" or two should do the trick for you!
My problem with the "Name Game" is that, by the time I get up in the morning and on the computer out here on the West Coast (i.e. around 7am or so), all you've East Coast folks have taken all the obvious ones.
:-\

I guess I'm going to have to come up with some less obvious ones.

Sing, what happened to all these witticisms BEFORE you joined HHW? Were they just lost in the ether???

Well maybe his current "release" has to do with his now-DH's decision to make it all legal?

In person, you'd never think he was the same person you read here!
Knowing that he is the same person, however, keeps you on your toes!

Well if anyone here should remember, it should be vous! You were at the 300 mark just a little over a year ago!

TOD:
DVD: MONARCH OF THE GLEN
CD: THE CHORUS
I have three movies here from the local video store, plus another three DVDs from Netflix, but given that I'll be watching 16 films over the next seven days (starting last night) for the film festival screening, well, methinks I may just want a break from movie-watching soon.
-
Did someone say "SNARKFEST"?!?!?
;D
-
The strangest thing happened yesterday. I was listening to THE CHORUS, which is a lovely French film with lovely French children's voices, when suddenly the voices sounded RUSSIAN!! Good Lord, what happened there???
Then, our lovely low-humidity day (or so we were promised) turned into a GIANT DOWNPOUR. Of course, I'd planned to take a walk for a mid-day break. I did take the walk--after the rain--but low-humidity days in August are much sought-after!
It was a strange day all around. I was pleased that DR JOSE and our other HHW NYers had a lovely day.
-
Did someone say "SNARKFEST"?!?!?
;D
Yes. Where are our other snarksters? I noticed that Miss K was on earlier.
-
Speaking of a walk, I need one. I've been sitting at the computer for much too long!

Well... Time for me to get out and about...

It's true! She doesn't need to lose one ounce! I, on the other hand... :P

And after? Well...
Everything is just the same, except that now a whole bunch of people have to put up with it!

I confess, I did too.

I've got chocolate cake! Der Brucer should come over and have a piece.

Why, yes you are. ;)

PAGE SEVEN DANCE!!
-
We had a rousing opening night....completely sold out.
Congratulations on your successful opening night!!

I began my run at 9:15 this morning. I did the long run, and then, because the walking part has been the hardest, I just kept running. I ended up doing three-and-a-half miles, which I haven't done in over twenty years. Then I only had another mile to walk home - much better. Don't know if I can do that every day, but I got through it pretty well.
-
We've had a few orders today - hoping more come in as the day goes by.

Actually, it's the West Coast that usually has "first crack" at the obvious names. bk puts the initials out at midnight (3 a.m. East Coast time), so by the time *I* log on, the West Coasters have had hours to come up with names.

The grocery store wasn't very busy at all, but you'd never know it for how busy the shopping center itself was. Terrible traffic, back up lanes, argh! I was SO glad to get home.

I began my afternoon viewing with MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Funny episode with some good jokes, situations, etc. I liked that geek Rob, too. He was cute!
Next week is the season finale! Oh, my, this summer has gone by fast. And this may be the last season for the show. Kathy has said that she's not sure she wants to do another season.
-
Thank you DR elmore. I'm trying to be good & Nurse myself. I realized I should have some tea. Later I'll have some soup.
-
Then I watched SMART PEOPLE.
It was kind of a slug of a movie. All of these fabulous actors caught up in a constipated comedy-drama where basically everyone is a sad sack. Even 94 minutes seemed too long. And, the uncle played by Thomas Haden Church. He should have been the focus of the film instead of a supporting character. He was the only one with any life, sense of fun, or interesting character story.
-
I hope you get better, too, DR Jane. You have a week to get better, right? Try not to overwork yourself getting ready for these folks (you could really end up in serious trouble). If they're family (even though they're not close), they will understand if you've been sick.
-
The day continues to improve. I found out Craig & Ioana have been without a stove or hot water for 3 days, how many more they don't know. The gas company said there is a leak. Such a great apartment building. The refrigerator has never worked properly.
If only he had a job so they could move.
-
(or in reference to the Cowardly Lion)
"Put 'em up
Put 'em upppp!
I'll fight you with both hands tied behind my back ...
... you lopsided bag of hay!"
-
I watched all of the bonus features on the disc, too: making of documentary, outtakes, deleted scenes. And I started listening to the commentary. Good lord, the director is as slow-talking and pedantic as the characters in the movie. No wonder it turned out that way!
-
I had time to skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke was on briefly, but only assuring his mother. Nothing in the previews for next week.
-
Miss Karen, did you get a storm last night, or did Phoenix hog it all?

Thanks Matt H. I still want the house clean & germ free. I'm almost more concerned Keith will catch it. We don't want to give them anything, and we want to have a fun time.

I'm drinking the tea now and it feels good going down.

Hi DerBrucer. Are you doing anything special for your birthday?
-
Miss Karen, did you get a storm last night, or did Phoenix hog it all?
You folks hogged it all -- although we did get a nice shower yesterday afternoon. Glad to see you didn't get washed away -- the news made it look like the Valley really got it. Did you get any of the high winds?
-
I would imagine that some sort of festive dining out experience is planned for this evening.
Nope - I get a special treat - home roasted leg of lamb (this time larded with garlic, rosemary and anchovies!)
Nothin' says love like home cookin'!

I'm not a cake fan - (not since Great Aunt Emma's wonderful orange layer cake). Birthday desert was usually home made cherry pie. Tonight I may try a plum pudding - dressed with hard sauce).

Re the Initials Game and the West Coasters - actually Mr. Rothman is an East Coaster - I'm the only West Coaster who posts that late. But, I've asked him to limit himself to fifteen names and I'm doing the same - until the morning, then everything is fair game.

Exactly. I've been saying the same thing ever since Holden admitted to her what he'd done, and she went ballistic.

Well, I'm going to hop off-line now and do some writing. Then, back to the den for the evening's entertainment.

Actually, I have a story about that.
Several years ago I had my last wisdom tooth extracted (yes, at age 52!) and the whole left side of my face was bruised. The pain meds made me so sick that we did go to the ER and I made sure that I had all the paperwork from the oral surgeon to prove that he had caused the bruising and not dear DH Richard.

DR DumbStruck - yes Marguerite is very melodic. I first listened to the score as "background" to get the "feel". Second listening was with the Synopsis (Downloaded). I've not yet followed the booklet's lyrics. I'm looking forward to seeing ths show in 6 weeks time.

Excellent point, DR Laura.

I would imagine that some sort of festive dining out experience is planned for this evening.
Oh, no. Der B likes to have either lamb or duck for his birthday din-din. The last time we tried dining out on his brithday, the duck was simply not up to snuff. For his birthday, I get to cook.
Roasted leg of lamb.
Mashed potatoes.
Salad of arugula and watercress.
Which, needless to say, is oversimplifying the menu. I have my ways of making things better than the menu suggests.
Besides, it's for MY birthday that we go out to eat. And that's just a hop and a skip away.

What is this world coming to? Beside's Clay Aiken's baby, which is really too ridiculous to talk about, even here. There is this (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_en_mo/people_matthew_mcconaughey). I don't understand the reasoning behind a lot of "stars" and their ways. Is it for publicity, or is some of these things done every day and we just don't know about them because the people who do them are "nobody's"?

I'd still vote for him.

Tonight's Olympics opening ceremonies should be something spectacular; reportedly, China's government has spent $300 million on just this event.
Yeah, but you should hear what they spent on that wall; and it doesn't seem to be keeping anybody out!
-
I just called the hospital & the nurse said they are still waiting for the surgeon to arrive & make a decision.
The incision decision?
-
I like the guy but a part of me wonder's what else he could be so stupid about. Look what happened when Clinton was forgiven, but then it was his wife who saved him.
If we didn't vote for any politician who strayed...well, there wouldn't be any politicians to vote for.
Or something like that.
-
I want to see MAN ON WIRE this weekend. Has anyone seen it? It looks good!
-
Sorry about that, Matthew. You snuck in there while I was posting the first list, and didn't realize you'd joined in. I modified the update for you.
-
If we didn't vote for any politician who strayed...well, there wouldn't be any politicians to vote for.
Or something like that.
Ever notice that it's only the male politicians we hear about cheating?
-
Oh, by the way, DR Edisaurus - I love Edward Gorey, but I'd never heard of that particular book! I love The Pornographic Sofa and The Gashlycrumb Tinies. :)
I am a collector! Visit Atlanta sometime and I'll show you my "etching"...(if I can find it after the move!)
I have most of his books, many of them signed, and other unusual Gorey things.
-
Rangy, with odd intervals.
Like the windmills of your mind.

But the human vocie is an intrument - that's why we have Opera.
The body is also an instrument. (I learned that in HAROLD AND MAUDE.)
-
DR Jane - your M-i-L will be in my thoughts this evening.
-
DR Edi - the book you "sent" me this morning just proves my theory that there's a book about everything!
-
Artificially colored pig lips?
That reminds me of the new Bud Lime commercials which guarantee real Bud taste with just a splash of 100% real lime flavor! ???
-
We had a rousing opening night....completely sold out.
Is it as good as ALL MY SONS?
-
What is this world coming to?
Maybe he just wants more fruit?
A dear friend planted her placenta and planted a plum tree on top. She also planted another plum nearby. The placenta plum bears much more fruit. Every year I enjoy a jar of "placenta plum" jam. (My DH can't get past the name, so I have it all to myself!)
-
DR Edi - the book you "sent" me this morning just proves my theory that there's a book about everything!
Spoken like a true librarian!
-
Silly me!
And I though DR JoseSPiano meant that Brett Favre had signed on in the upcoming revival of West Side Story...
Do you know who Bret Favre is?
-
I got an e-mail from Sergio's wife once.
Did she suspect anything untoward?
-
What is this world coming to? Beside's Clay Aiken's baby, which is really too ridiculous to talk about, even here. There is this (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_en_mo/people_matthew_mcconaughey). I don't understand the reasoning behind a lot of "stars" and their ways. Is it for publicity, or is some of these things done every day and we just don't know about them because the people who do them are "nobody's"?
If Michael Jackson can father a blond-headed blue-eyed baby, I don't consider Clay Aiken's foray into fatherhood odd at all.
;)
-
Jrand - Congrats on your opening.
And speaking of audience goodwill, our local community theater reviewer headlined today's review:
"ManeStage Didn't Choose Wisely for Third Production"
When I saw that, I wondered what horrible misstep that ManeStage had made to incur the warth of this "gentleman." Here, then, is the second paragraph of his review:
"Unfortunately, in their third production of their first season, I’m afraid they chose a silly musical that is not well written and is filled with lightweight music of the type often referred to as bubblegum. The play is “Bye Bye Birdie,” a 1960 Broadway musical with book by Michael Stewart, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams that was made into a movie starring Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margret in 1963."
Excuse me! BYE BYE BIRDIE may not be everyone's cup of theater, but the show has survived for almost 50 years because audiences love it.
-
I shall now be on my way to have some food and then see a reading of a new gay musical.
-
If we didn't vote for any politician who strayed...well, there wouldn't be any politicians to vote for.
Or something like that.
I hope that isn't true.
I still say it is stupid, or maybe truly arrogant to think the press won't find out you are having an affair while campaigning for president.
And when the press finds out so will your wife, the one going through treatments. The public won't life that, let alone how your wife will feel.
-
Maybe he just wants more fruit?

I love plum jam. In a way it is nice to think the placenta wasn't simply trashed.

Feel better vibes to DR Jane and to DH Keith's mother!

DR Jane - your M-i-L will be in my thoughts this evening.

She wouldn't let you near him, huh?

If Michael Jackson can father a blond-headed blue-eyed baby, I don't consider Clay Aiken's foray into fatherhood odd at all.

You meet one turkey baster, you've met 'em all, ask Jodie Foster.

Be careful, BK. We don't want another Yuri Zhivago.
-
Thanks Matt H. I still want the house clean & germ free. I'm almost more concerned Keith will catch it. We don't want to give them anything, and we want to have a fun time.
Of course in the back of our minds is if there will be a trip to L.A. I pray not.
I'm drinking the tea now and it feels good going down.
Yeah, that brandy really helps!
-
I hope that isn't true.
I still say it is stupid, or maybe truly arrogant to think the press won't find out you are having an affair while campaigning for president.
Instead of lying & waiting until now, he should have made these statements immediately.
"In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.”
"I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices," he said. "With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006, and today I take full responsibility publicly."
-
Thank you DR TCB.
-
Yeah, that brandy really helps!
I should have thought of that. I bet I would be feeling better about now. ;)
-
Well, then, did you get a noise maker and confetti tossed about?
He's 70 years old for God-sake, you don't think he makes enough noises on his own?

Am I the only person who thinks that 30,000 fireworks in a city with really really bad pollution is a bad idea?
LOL< I was thinking this as I was watching them go off
-
Which reminds me...
I'll be at work on Monday, so der B will have to do the scorekeeping for most of the next game.
-
Nowadays, does that end a future Presidential run, or not?
Seems to me the President's who have had affairs were pretty good presidents, lol. Makes me wonder if that's why he dropped out so quickly
-
Unlike Jacko or any number of straight actors, Clay Aiken has always been upfront about the fact that the baby is a result of artificial insemination. I say, "Good for him!"
-
Instead of lying & waiting until now, he should have made these statements immediately.
"In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.”

OK, I'll admit it, the opening ceremony isn't my cup of tea. I'm finding it quite boring right now

OK, I'll admit it, the opening ceremony isn't my cup of tea. I'm finding it quite boring right now
The last one I watched was for the Winter Olympics and I was so grossed out over the poor taste on epic display. I am not commenting on the athletes but the taste of the Olympic Committee.
-
And on that note (A#), I'm going home. I want to watch the Olympic opening ceremonies.
Until later!
-
I say it's none of our business and they shouldn't have to say anything.

VIBES TO DR JANE AND DH KEITH'S MOTHER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you.
She is out of surgery, minus the blockage & a little bit of her intestines, and in ICU.
The surgeon is concerned the stitches won't hold. He said he will know more on Monday. She is so fragile the first set of stitches didn't hold. Scary.
-
You know, I really couldn't care less what the celebrities do.
-
Prayers and vibes for Jane's MIL.
-
Of course, not watching tv or movies, I don't know from many celebrities.
-
Been watching the Olympics ceremony and will soon go to bed. I never did get a call telling me how much blood thinner to take tonight, so I guessed (conservatively). Tomorrow is my first Saturday to work since May 31 :P
Keith's mom remains in my prayers.
'night!
-
Thank you DR Laura.
-
'night DR Ginny & sleep well.
-
I feel that way about the Westcoasters who post at night! So maybe you should stay up late, Druxy!
My problem in staying up late...which I used to do...is that I have a cat who wakes me up VERY EARLY, wanting to be fed.
She will NOT be ignored.
[Shooting her with real bullets is not an option & a squirt gun didn't work.]
So, once I'm up, I'm up.
Hopefully, I can grab a 1-hour nap in the afternoon. Otherwise, I'm dead after 4 pm.
-
Good Evening!
I know the calendar says it's August 8, that it is Summer, but I swear it fell like an early fall day today. Cool, breezy, and just a touch of humidity in the air. Wonderful, wonderful!
-
Now, BK, you know why I was yawning so much at the rehearsal the other day.
:-\
-
'night!
Prayers for your mother in law, Jane.
And vibes to everyone else who needs them.
-
DR Druzy, I used to grab cats like that and hold them close to me under the covers. I never, ever got up and fed them. Eventually it stopped the early morning wake up call.
Oh, and I did not feed the cat until I had been up for awhile, so my getting out of bed didn't signal feeding time.
Going to sleep earlier works too.
-
Thank you DR TCB.
Vibes to all who need them.

I ended up seeing "Mamma Mia!" (the movie) earlier this afternoon...
It was a good movie, but could have been - and should have been much better. Pierce Brosnan's singing "voice" did bother me, but I thought the director/editor made a very smart choice to not show him singing the first time he sang. You had to "think" if that was him singing. ;)
Strangely enough, the casting choice I had the most issue with was Meryl Streep. I guess I've just seen her in too many of her "serious" roles, and it was just hard to accept her as a happy-go-lucky, somewhat carefree woman. Yes, the character of Donna has some "conflict", but there were times when I felt that Ms. Streep was trying to bring too much to the table. It was almost too "deep" a portrayal to me.
I also wanted the movie to be a bit more slicker. The filmmakers have made mention of the relatively small budget they had, and, alas, it shows. I was also a bit shocked and surprised to see that most of the choreography in the movie was just a recreation of the choreography from the stage show.
I did like it, but I found myself laughing a few times at the wrongs things for the wrong reasons. -And some of the plot adjustments just didn't work for me at all. Yes, there's a lot of "coincidence" in the original stage show, but at least those situations are set up (better).
Again, it was a good movie. But instead of leaving the movie theatre wanting to see it again, I left the theatre wondering when I could see the stage version again.
-
At least you can remember what was! ;D
And when. "My" past is not so or as distant.
;D
-
Oh, yeah, who that be calling me a lightweight?! Hmmmm?! Bring it on, bring it on.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee
That would be me

-
(or in reference to the Cowardly Lion)
"Put 'em up
Put 'em upppp!
I'll fight you with both hands tied behind my back ...
... you lopsided bag of hay!"
Umm... And neither does that.
-
Well lolling about and being pampered is special!
der Brucer
And what...
Oh, DR Miss Karen beat me to the punch on this one. ;)

Can a helpful NYer identify the white orb?

That is the "new" Hot Air Balloon ride that they are offering in Central Park throughout the end of the summer. $25 for 15 minutes. I've had some friends who have done it, and enjoyed it. However, they said the wait in line was quite the wait. A group of friends lined up one morning at 6:30am to be the first ones in line.
-
Floating like a leaf on a shivering aspen,
There goes Miss Karen
Talkin' her talk, waitin' for me
to TAKE her to Snarkytown!
It is ON!
;D
Umm... Hmm...
Blank verse?
-
Fortunately, der Brucer is NOT 88. That would have been overkill.
...And then DR MBarnum would have had to interview him.
-
I got an e-mail from Sergio's wife once.
...And I actually used to work for Mrs. Franchi. She runs an opera foundation that supports young singers. Each year at the National Italian-American Foundation dinner in DC, she would showcase that year's scholarship recipients, and I was their accompanist. It was always quite an interesting and fun day. Alas, we never got to partake of the meal, but we did get to hobnob with the celebrity honorees since we were usually holed up in the same waiting room before taking the stage. -I still remember having to check to see if I was drooling when I got to meet Stanley Tucci. ;)
-
Which reminds me...
I'll be at work on Monday, so der B will have to do the scorekeeping for most of the next game.
Happy Birthday to him. ;)
-
Back to "Mamma Mia!" for a second...
I saw it at the Ziegfeld Theatre. The Ziegfeld has a seating capacity of a little over 1100. There were about 50 people in the theatre at this afternoon's 4:15 showing. -I have a feeling I would not have squirmed so much during the "curtain call" had the theatre been full. ;)
-
When I was in college, I was working on my hot air balloon pilots license. Unfortunately, the friend who had the balloon sold it. If you,ve never been on a balloon ride go! It's wonderful up up and awaym
-
...Now lying, while I perfectly understand the why, isn't a smart move-unless you get away with it.
A Clinton reference?
::)

Of course, not watching tv or movies, I don't know from many celebrities.
A celebrity is someone whose face gets plastered on the magazines that line the grocery store cash register lanes.
You don't need to know who they are. Not really.

The birthday din-din was a success. The anchovies were not obviously there, but lent a nice saltiness and something else to the flavor of the meat. The lamb itself was gloriously on the tender side of medium rare. And the accompaniments worked very nicely.
Der Brucer is now mixing himself some hard sauce to go with his pudding. He seems happy.
As for myself, I've got to get some sleep. I've a full day of checking tomorrow. Hasta.
-
But before I go...
A couple of notes about the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
First...
Wow! The Chinese really know how to do the Wave! :D
Second...
The girls lining the track during the Parade of the Atheletes need a change of costume. With their clapping and little hops they'd look far more appropriate if they were wearing Hooters t-shirts. ::)
-
DR Druzy, I used to grab cats like that and hold them close to me under the covers.
Maybe I'll try that. Thanks.

Only 385 to go....

DR elmore - And speaking of street fairs...
This Sunday is also the Dominican Day Parade which will block off Sixth Avenue from 36th Street to Central Park South. -And there's a corresponding street fair on East 60th Street between 5th and Madison Avenues. Plan your trip to 59E59 accordingly.
*Or at least get the cursing out of the way before you get on the bus... and into the theatre. ;)
-
I had to go back to the SMART PEOPLE Blu-ray for a few minutes when I went back down. I had not watched one of the bonus features (the cast and director at Sundance; it was only 4 minutes), and I had neglected to check the sound meter to see how many Mbps the PCM 5.1 track was displaying. (Yes, I have been fussed at for leaving out that information on other Blu-ray reviews. It was 6.9 Mbps - the full 24-bit uncompressed experience).
-
Since I had a nice bunch of hours free before PSYCH came on, I put on BILLY ELIOTT and watched it. Lovely film. The best thing about it, of course, apart from the wonderfully bracing dance sequences, was the way the father and older brother came around to thinking about Billy as a dancer. That was worth the price of the DVD.
-
Next, I put on the CHICAGO Blu-ray because there are still bonus features on the disc I've never watched. Tonight I watched the rehearsal footage of the "Hot Honey Rag" and Renee recording "Nowadays." Then, I went back into the movie and watched those sequences.
-
Next, I put on HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN on Blu-ray and watched about an hour or so of it. Always enjoy revisiting the POTTER films, and now that I have them on Blu-ray, they are just SUCH a pleasure to watch.
-
Anti-cursing vibes to elmore for Sunday afternoon
-
PSYCH made me laugh out loud, and how brilliant was the casting for Steven Weber as Shawn's happy-go-lucky uncle! Fun episode.

Back from dinner and the reading. I went to Hugo's in West Hollywood, since it's just two blocks from the theater. What a difference, Hugo's-wise. Courteous, no waiting, no trendy Studio City buttwipes, and much, much better food. I had the pasta papa - it was great, and I made sure that the pasta part was absolutely dry - no oil, no butter, just the scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon bits, and scallions heaped over the pasta. So, I think even though it was really filling, it was the right thing to eat. Also had a small Caesar salad - it, too was very good.
The reading was fine. Our most recent Joyce in the Brain directed it, and kept things moving along. The piece itself is too slight, too unfocused, with no drama, no character to latch on to, etc.

And you will be in mine, hoping you won't have anymore bleeding attacks.
