I'm back. I've done the unthinkable, I've posted without reading the notes. I haven't read anything since Thursday morning when I went to Minnesota.

Had a difficult flight from MN to NY (it got delayed three times) but I'm back and everything else was fine.

I have much work to do so I won't be reading or posting much today.

Later, gaters.

Speaking of potholes, I just got he new Randy Newman album, HARPS AND ANGELS. (There's a funny song about potholes...)

I think it's his best album in years. Well..that's not saying much since it's been 9 years since his last album of songs. But it definitely will rank up there as one of my favorites. It's only $10 on Amazon (it was the #2 album in sales last week!) so I bought extras to share with friends.

When I was listening to it, I had the same feeling as when I first heard SAIL AWAY. The songs are thought-provoking and great fodder for debate!

Randy is going to be playing Carnegie Hall in the near future. I envy you lucky New Yorkers!

Just a few days ago I ordered Harps and Angels on Amazon.  Randy Newman appeared on "Letterman" and sang "Easy Street", backed up by about 12 musicians.  It was gorgeous.  I listened to the samples on Amazon and ordered it immediately.

It was actually quite exciting! But interesting for the US. Because one race (the one with american katie hoff) she was leading and it looked for sure like she was going to win. But because she touched at the end flat handed (instead of with her fingers) she lost. And the american relay, they were so far behind with only a few meters to go. And it looked like they were going to lose for sure. But they ended up winning at the last second. Wow!
still no medals for canada :(

In other news: our beloved deco Strand Theatre on the square in Marietta has been in the restoration process for 5 years without much happening, despite millnios of dollars being raised. (It's owned by a city councilman-slumlord who has left it rot for many years and has a demolition permit for it. So we are all putting money into a theatre that he will still own.)

This weekend it was announced that the Atlanta Lyric Theatre will be making it their home next season. The bodes well for The Strand surviving as a theatre. Their new season starts in December, and they are raising the extra money to equip it with what they need for their productions.

They should have productions there for 100 days out of the year. Finally, an exciting development!

I'm also thinking that this would be a fun place for The Brain... to be staged!

Well....well....WELL....I have seen the most unusual version of HMS PINAFORE I could ever hope to see.

It was produced by and stars Australian Simon Gallaher - the DVD is from 1997 - and is outrageous...and not always in a good way.  Doing a bit of research it seems that this is the third in his trilogy of G/S productions - which I suppose is why the entire cast turns into characters from THE MIKADO during the megamix ending and sings songs from that particular operetta.

Sir Joseph Porter is funny, Simon is handsome as Ralph.  Sir Joseph's sisters, cousins, and aunts - become an Andrews Sisters type trio and are referenced as his sister, cousin, and aunt....  Nice costuming, bodybuilders as sailors, and a nice set....but it's not your father's Gilbert & Sullivan, unless your father was gay.

I'm up, I'm up... And it's raining here in NYC.  But it's sort of a strange storm - at least here in West Harlem.  Lots of rumbling from the skies, but the actual rainfall is sort of on the light side.  According to the news break-in that just happened, the storm center is just north of here which would explain the "all bark, no bite" conditions right now.

Nice review by David Finkle on theatermania.com for some of the one-acts on the program of one-acts that elmore, Jose and singhdaw saw yesterday:

"The Terrence McNally-Skip Kennon mini-musical Plaisirs d'Amour and Michael Domitrovich's On Island both take a sweetly wise look at love and marriage and hold out for, respectively, acceptance and hope.

Plaisirs d'Amour, which takes its cue from the traditional French ditty but doesn't reprise it, begins with early-stage love pleasures and advances and moves on to the inevitable disillusioning phases that McNally obviously believes speedily follow. Ruth (Stephanie D'Abruzzo) and Sam (Jonathan C. Kaplan) meet cute at a recital where a soprano (Rita Harvey in the first of several roles) is holding forth on love's vagaries. Thereafter, the couple marries, raise children, indulge infidelities and, years later, reach a convincingly realistic conclusion about their relationship. The piece will strike some inveterate theater fans as a variation on Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, but McNally and Kennon's lovely melodies and deft lyrics make the enterprise decidedly appealing, as do the accomplished actor-singers (who also include Neal Mayer in a range of supporting roles).

Anyone who saw Domitrovich's Artfuckers this past year will probably be unprepared for the gentle sagacity of On Island. Greek groom-to-be George (Anthony Carrigan) is getting cold feet before his marriage to the Jewish Sandi (Lisa Birnbaum) on a Martha's Vineyard beach. So he's retreated with brother Leo (Jorge Cordova) to work through the qualms that threaten to overwhelm him. There's much fraternal love here, and when cooling-her-heels-at-the-altar Sandi arrives to get to the delay's bottom, there's even more genuine love circulating on the symbolic sand. Never mind that the glue binding the about-to-be-newlyweds and brother Leo seems to hinge on their shared affection for cult-movie Airplane! These churning Edgartown waters run deep, especially as expertly guided by director Mary Catherine Burke."

I have a question for DRs RonP and MBarnum,

After last night's show who are your favorites on BIG BROTHER?

Libra is actually growing on me!
I like Dan a lot. And memphis.

And renny is alright.
I still like keesha but a bit less.

I'm liking Dan a lot more now than before.  I like Memphis, and I like Renny and Keesha.  Keesha apparently went a bit off the beam last night, but not moreso than Michelle who seems to thrive on conflict more than on anything else.

The ones I dislike the most are, in order, April, Jerry and Ollie.  Ollie needs to wake up, smell the coffee and start playing the game rather than riding on April's apron strings.

Libra won't ever grow on me.  She's far too volatile, but I have to say the "other side" totally don't get that she's not pulling the strings for the opposition.  But that's a leftover from Jessie's lying/manipulation of his team.

Come to think of it, I think I despise Jerry most of all.  What a hypocrite he was...branding Dan as hiding behind his cross and calling him a Judas and saying all sorts of things about his faith.  None of that has a thing to do with anything and Jerry is a lowlife for doing stuff like that.

Jerry, himself, removed his military cap as HOH when he went back on his word and nominated Brian, betraying his main alliance partner.  How does he reconcile that hypocrisy????  And to judge Dan?

Based on the current issue of The Week, Richard and I just ordered tickets for the Aug. 31 matinee of "Around the World in 80 Days" at the Irish Rep in NYC.  Anyone want to join us?

The irony here is that this production had a successful run at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park and we missed it.  We've decided we need to go there more.

BK, I went to the Salem Best Buy last night and there were several DVDs of those double features that you talked about yesterday (World Without End, etc.).

One reason that the clerks could not locate them on the computer, nor can you locate them on Best Buy's website, is that they are not listed by the movie title, but are listed as "Sci Fi 70s"...which is totally dumb. Best Buy does that a lot, so you have to get very creative to be able to locate anything there.

I noticed that they were filed like at Virgin the other day too.  In fact, a couple of those new two-fers seem to be listed by the series title rather than by or under one of the movie titles in the two-pack.

Then which or whose copy have I been reading off of all these years? Hmm...

What collection do you have? Is there another published collection besides Too many songs by...?

Edi: Sorry to have missed your original post, but, then again, we can never have too many Tom Lehrer singalongs, can we? (okay, maybe it's just me...)

Live and learn... the only collections I ever found (both of which I have, natch) are the aforementioned Too Many Songs and a slim 1950s-era hardcover called The Tom Lehrer Songbook. Neither include such crucial numbers as "Alma," "Oedipus Rex," "Whatever Became of Hubert," or "Lobachevsky" (actually, "Too Many Songs" includes the lyrics for "Lobachevsky," but suggests that, as the original arrangement would take too much space, the prospective performer do as the protagonist suggests and steal it off of the recording).

Would you recall the title of this collection?

re: big brother 10

Jerry, himself, removed his military cap as HOH when he went back on his word and nominated Jessie despite his PROMISE not to.  How does he reconcile that hypocrisy????  And to judge Dan?

I actually mostly agree with everything you said. jerry really annoyed me with how he acted towards dan. First off jerry did worse. and second, since they are all convinced that dan is america's player WHY ARE THEY SO MAD HE VOTED OUT JESSIE?  I just could not believe how jerry acted towards dan ("you are dead to me")

If you looked at any of the links i posted i think keesha and michelle both went loony. But since i never cared much for michelle what she said was not really an eye opener.

Of the videos i posted there was one that made me like keesha a lot. And one that made me dislike her.  She really went crazy in a room with michelle/libra and april. And surprisingly april sat there and did not go besirk.

Keesha was swearing, and interupting. And she was drunk. But i did not like her at all.  Later though she was in the backyard with memphis and jerry and they were comforting her (hey didn't they hate each other last week).  This was actually the first time i liked jerry and it will be interesting to see if they show this. He was really wonderful towards her. And il iked her a lot because she was being genuine and saying how hard it was for her in the house and how she doesn't like how everyone is acting.

Didn't know that there was a "That Was the Year that Was" songbook, but if memory serves, "The Tom Lehrer Song Book" only included songs from the first album. Too Many Songs is the only in-print collection that I'm aware of, and it basically includes the songs that were featured in "Tomfoolery," with a smattering of others ("Werner Von Braun," if memory serves). Hi, Gang. Just dropping in to check things out.

I'm tired but glad to be back. Home anyway if not at work.

I know every inch of the Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal at the MSP International Airport since I was there from 2pm until 7pm. It wasn't hellish, just annoying. The really annoying part was getting off the JFK Air Train and not being able to buy a combo ticket to get out of the Air Train and get onto the Long Island Railroad. You can get a combo ticket to leave Air Train and get on the subway but it was 11:45pm on Sunday evening. I wasn't going to wait and then sit on the E train for the time it would take to get to 14th Street and 8th Avenue. The Air Train to JFK is (IMHO) not terribly user friendly, especially for people coming into NY who don't speak a lot of English. I won't rant off but I will say when the MTA sucks, it sucks big time!

I have taken both the JFK Air Train and the Newark Air Train and while there should not be a lot of difference between the two, I think the Newark Air Train is better and I look forward to using it when I go to Madison in two weeks.

*And I know what you mean about the AirTrain.  What's really weird is that the terminal/exit/entrance/ticketing set-up is also slightly different between the Jamaica and the Howard Beach stations.  Thankfully, the first time I took the AirTrain to and from Jamaica station, I had read enough "warnings" online about buying my fare cards and tickets in advance.  Consequently, if I'm getting reimbursed for my transportation, then I splurge on a car service of taxi.

I had a good time at the Reunion. Did I mention the reason I went to Minnesota was for a family reunion? Well, that's why I went. My cousin Ray from Sheffield also came. He was a big hit. I am the only family member who had met him (here in New York and in Cardiff) but he's a great guy, much better at socializing than me. He fit right away. I, on the other hand, while having a good time, did sit back often and think, "Where the hell did I come from in this group???" They are all nice people but the only thing I have in common with most of my cousins is the gene pool. Professional drinkers they. Aside from a margarita now and then with with our own Mr. Moore, not I. After the official reunion broke up they all went to a bar and did shots. I went home to bed.

I'll try to re-size some pictures tonight (my sister takes good pictures but they are very large and won't fit without downsizing) and post a shot or two tomorrow.

We have to get together and hoist a margarita and then watch Chad Mitchell and Company. I'm free this weekend and next weekend.

I should be working but I have stopped for the day. I'm waiting for my paycheck. We get paid the afternoon before our actual paydays (on the 12th and the 28th) so I'm waiting for that lovely man from payroll to bring my envelope.

Anthony got his first paycheck from Fireside (he's having a wonderful time, by the way) and was disappointed at the large amount of state taxes Wisconsin has decided to remove. He'll have to file WI taxes next April but at least he's working.

Then, I finished INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE from Showtime-HD. It is a definitely step up from the sDVD, but I'll think long and hard at the price when the Blu-ray goes on sale in October. I'm not sure it's a movie I revisit often enough to warrant a repurchase.

I was going to start MAD MEN which I recorded from regular AMC last night, but just as a lark, I looked at the HD On Demand, and last night's episode was ALREADY THERE!

So, I began watching last night's MAD MEN in HD! Looks to be a good episode, but I only saw about 15 minutes of it. I'll complete it when I go back down.

Then, I plan to watch TRANSFORMERS tonight while recording THE CLOSER. Once I finish the movie, I'll watch THE CLOSER and speed through the commercials.

I'm bummed that I'll miss THE CLOSER and be dependent on its rerun before next week's episode. I have to step out tonight to see my beloved Donna Lynne Champlin's FINISHING THE HAT at 7 pm tonight. I doubt I'll be back before 9:30.

My understanding is that Disney is trying to release as much teen and tween-oriented material now in order to give the theatrical release of "High School Musical 3" some breathing room.  -They've even announced closing dates for the "High School Musical" stage shows in the park over the next couple of weeks.  It's all about saturation.

It would probably be easier for you to go to the Central Park line than to go all the way down to the Public. A friend saw it and said his line wait was not so long. He got into line in the mid-morning (he didn't say what time) and he easily got two tickets. He said it was lots of fun but some of the creaks do show.

I will try to see it before I leave but I don't know if I will be able to work out the dates.

I didn't sleep well last night.  I was sleeping at six this morning when a painful cramp in my calf woke me up.  I must have hopped out of bed thousands of times in order to work out a bad cramp & never have I fallen.  Down I went, smack!  I scared the heck out of Keith & then he couldn't hear me respond as my face was in the carpet, which scared him even more.

I know how I fell, it hurt too much to get my foot flat on the ground.  What I can't figure out, cuz it happened so fast, was how I worked out the worst of the cramp.  Hey, I'm grateful I did, just surprised.

Of course I landed on my right hand, wrist & arm.  I stayed in bed a couple of hours, dosing on and off, with a cold pack.

DR Jane, it sounds to me like you're working too hard!

Not yet, I'm just sitting here. ;D

I'll finish the one room I'm half way through & then decide if I'll continue.

I just bought myself a little more time.  I canceled my plans for tomorrow, book group discussion & lunch out afterward with one or two of the members.  I was looking forward to both activities.

BK---You've done 29, and had a huge headstart.

So I will attempt to proceed to match that.

So what happened to the 15 name limit we read so much about?

bk, you are not a good role model!  ;D

(Mom, bk did it, so why can't I??)

Since he's the Maysles brohter who's still alive, I figured I might as well correct it!

Perhaps we should all have a limit of 15 names.  It really is difficult for most of the DRs to join in the "game" when there are already 60 names on the list before they log on.

"Aileen McMahon" is on the big list twice.
For the record, my original spelling, which has been lambasted, "Aline", is correct.  As Casey Stengel used to say, you can look it up.

A. bk didn't identify his entry (did you make, and then delete, the one on page 9?)

B. Use Advance Search and change the "max age since last post" to 1 day and you need only the name. (Failure to do this drives the search engine into overdrive as it tries searching all the HHW files.)

Once I saw that Al Michaels and Al Molinaro had both been named earlier, I did delete my posts "naming" them.

It begs the question, though, whether it was the standard video being broadcast in HD, or whether it was an HD mastering of the film, itself.  At least, that's what I'm thinking "might" be a possibility.  If an HD channel wants to broadcast an anamorphic image of a film that has not been processed for HD, can they not essentially upconvert it for the HD broadcast?

DR Ginny - Apparently, the lines for Hair in Central Park have reached "ridiculous" proportions.  I was thinking of going tomorrow, and was planning on being in line by 7:00am.  -Ticket distribution doesn't start until 1:00pm.

Additionally, due to construction down at the Public, they are not distributing tickets downtown this year.  However, they did start a "Virtual Line" that you can sign up for on their WEBSITE (http://www.publictheater.org/content/view/128/223/)

Oh, and the line for tickets is always longest on the weekends.

*I think I'm going to pass on waiting in line for tickets tomorrow since they list tomorrow as a "limited distribution".  I believe tomorrow night is an outreach and donors night.

Tipsy again, thanks to two rum and Coca Colas. Donna Lynne's show was fantastic and deserves a live recording. It's one of the most novel cabaret acts I've seen, based on embarrassing and cautionary tales from her life that have lessons for all to learn from, such as "the year I stalked Brian D'Arcy James," which could be a cautionary lesson for such yokels as our DR MBarnum. Other good stories dealt with "one night stands," auditioning on heavy pain medication after surgery, and going on for the first time in her first Broadway show, "The Dead."

Tom Kitt provided wonderful support at the piano and there was a lovely crowd. I waved at someone I knew (what was his name?), had a nice talk with Barbara Walsh and her husband Jack, spent a brief moment with Miss Merrill Grant and her date, and said hello to other wonderful friends I'd not seen in a while.

My understanding is that Disney is trying to release as much teen and tween-oriented material now in order to give the theatrical release of "High School Musical 3" some breathing room.  -They've even announced closing dates for the "High School Musical" stage shows in the park over the next couple of weeks.  It's all about saturation.

Well, that's an interesting scenario. Hope it works out for them.

It is possible, I suppose, but with the Blu-ray coming out in October, it seems likely this is the HD master that Showtime is running. I feel certain where an HD master is available, that's what they use.

The bigger point to make is that Blu-ray is 1080p, and the Showtime-HD broadcast was 1080i and heavily compressed with hundreds of other cable channels so obviously the Blu-ray is going to look AT LEAST as good if not better.

I began my evening of viewing with TRANSFORMERS on HBO-HD. I was turned off immediately because of HBO's irritating habit of reformatting widescreen films even in HD to fit the 1.78:1 aspect ratio of widescreen TVs. Compositions were so screwy that I got mad over and over while watching the movie.

Secondly, the film was WAY too long. Almost 2 1/2 hours for something that should have been 90 minutes. I got SO bored with all the battles, just like I did when I reviewed the animated Transformers shows.

Yes, the special effects and sound design were done beautifully, but the human stuff was just SO insignificent.

I am SO glad I didn't blind buy this on DVD or HD-DVD. The Blu-ray comes out very soon, and I won't be buying that either.

Next, I finished episode #3 of MAD MEN which I had started this afternoon. Marvelous episode, and the HD is SUCH an improvement from the SD telecast. (The photography at during the restaurant scene near the close was really lush.) I sure hope On Demand keeps doing this during the run of the season. This is the only way to watch it.

Next, I watched THE CLOSER "live" (so that should put your mind to rest, DR Edi!)

Marvelous episode; loved the final scene with Provenza and Pope.

Poor Fritz was barely in this episode, but I guess there was no fallout from the blow-up they had last week.

I concluded my free day of viewing by watching two episodes of MYSTERIES AND SCANDALS which I recorded eons ago off E! The two I watched involved George Reeves and James Dean. I noticed the next one on the DVD-R was on Jean Harlow. Maybe I'll watch that tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.

Vibes to DR JANE....

DR ELMORE that is a lush and handsome new avatar!

The crowd reaction to the vocal stylings of Miss Dorothy Provine during the pre show and intermission at SINGIN' IN THE RAIN have been most positive....and of course the orchestrations and vocal arrangements are most appropriate.

DR GINNY - did they have real rain in the production you saw?

I just spent the entire evening hooking up a new power surge protector thing...it is big, heavy, and expensive. My old one bit the dust last night.

Since I had to replug everything into it I decided to also plug in my new printer/scanner and flat screen LCD screen that my mom gave me several months ago. I also cleaned out tons of dust and dirt. Yuch.

I sure can see things better with this new screen!

Yay!

But actually, the show that aired last week was 403. They decided to air 404 (the one about the high school kids) first. So the fallout was actually in the previous week. The original 404 script included this reference:

BRENDA
I’m sorry to ask your opinion when
you’re not talking to me.

FRITZ
Well. I’ll be mad at you again when
you’re not so upset.

I can't remember if it made it into the final show, but if it did, the comment wouldn't have made any sense when aired out of order.

My current client likes vampire stories, and I remember someone here saying that Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY is a good one. Since I'm giving one of my clients the Randy Newman CD, I thought I'd give the other one a vampire movie. But I see that there are different versions floating around, with different aspect ratios, and even with different composers. Can anyone give me any guidance?

Thanks!

Hmmm... I think I'm going to try to the new Bolt Bus service to and from DC.   It's a spinoff of Greyhound (I believe), and their fares are only between $20 and $25 each way.  I would love to splurge on the train again, but I didn't realize the Amtrak fares took such a jump for the summer months - the "peak" Acela rate is now over $200 each way!

This is good to know as sis and I decided the next time we get that way we want to take some day trips outside of NYC, and that sounds like a pretty dang good price! :)

It's a four hour bus ride each way, so not really that day-trip friendly.  Bolt Bus only operates between a few cities - NYC, Philly, Baltmore, DC, and I think Boston too.  They're "nicer" busses, and even havei Wi-Fi on board too.  And the earlier you purchase your ticket, the cheaper it is.

DR JulieC40 - I always suggest taking the Metro-North train up the Hudson River Line - yes, just like the Billy Joel song.  It's a very cheap round-trip ticket, and you can take it all the way to Poughkeepsie, or stop along the way.  Cool little towns, and there are some nice cafes at most of the stops too.  And the scenery of the river is gorgeous!

A few thoughts about name hogging:

Now, this is not my blog, and maybe it's not my position to say anything.
But:
I would have stuck to 15 names last night if Bruce had.  It's really only competitive between him and me, where it's trench warfare.
There are no prizes.  You don't win anything by having the most names.
I posted most of my names in the wee hours because I'm an incurable insomniac.  I sleep much of the day.
That's why you didn't see much of me in the daytime.
All this being said, between Bruce and I, we posted far less than half the acceptable names.  And many, between his film composers and my sports figures, were names none of you would have had anyway.
We'd kept this game private for a long time, but he thought you'd all like to share in the fun we were having with it.  And from the number of posts this has generated, and the fact that most of you are quite proficient at it, it seems like fun has been had.
We could easily go back and make it private, but the cat is now out of the bag, and as such, I think it's fair for all of us to go for the gusto, to coin a phrase, and not take away from our fun.
What you all are doing is far from mopping up.
The goal is to get as many names up there each week as possible, and for me to beat Bruce.

Back from our first performance.  I had to eat afterwards  -  went over to Little Toni's since that was open late, and had a salad and three pieces of pizza, which is what I felt like eating.  Given the amount that I ran today, I think that was probably okay - certainly it's under 2000 calories.

Performance was pretty good - I never had time to clean up what I wanted to because of having to put our new actress in the show.  So, several things were sloppier than I like, and hopefully we can fix those before tonight's final performance.  Of course, we never had a full run through of the show - that was the biggest problem.  There were some energy issues with a couple of cast members, and hopefully we can fix that, too.  But, overall, it was fairly smooth.  We had about thirty-three people in the audience (the theater only seats sixty-six).
