Erroneous assumption in today's notes:

Quote
Most of you know what osmosis is, but would you like to see what the dictionary on my laptop has as the number one definition of osmosis? Here it is:

The flow of a solvent by diffusion through a semipermeable membrane from a more concentrated solution to a less concentrated one, until the concentrations are equalized. It is a major factor in regulating the movement of water into and out of tissues in living organisms. I don’t know about you dear readers, but reading that just gave me a migraine. That’s certainly not the definition of osmosis that we all know and love.

It is, indeed, the very definition that first springs to my mind. If I were given "osmosis" in a word association test, my answer would be "semipermeable membrane". I suspect the same might be true of many folks who got better than a C in a biology course!

Rillettes -- the new wave in L.A.'s charcuterie renaissance -- can be made of pork, game, poultry, fish or even vegetables. So grab a baguette and enjoy.

SERVED IN pretty, hinged Mason jars, squat glass pots or ceramic ramekins, rillettes -- savory, toothsome meats or fish that have been braised or prepared as confit-- are multiplying on restaurant menus, a second wave in L.A.'s charcuterie renaissance.

...

The article even contains a simple recipe - but plan ahead - it takes six days.

Yep, this is the sort of guy I live with, folks.  The word I'd use to associate with "osmosis"  is "absorbtion," which is probably more in line with how our esteemed BK would use the word, but then I'm more attuned to memes than I am to the world of science.

That's meme, pronounced "meem".

You could look it up.

The only Kim Novak movies I can think of are Bell, Book and Candle and Vertigo.

And since I don't obsess worry about my weight, I don't diet, so I don't have any diet foods.  (Obsess is really too strong a word, but it's the one that first came to mind.  It's one of those words that are memetic with us non-dieters when referring to those who do diet.)

I've handed my copy of Michael Ruhlman's Charcuterie to der Brucer, so he could look up the rillettes recipes included there.  This might not have been my smartest move - der B is probably going to ask me to make some for him.  On the other hand, this means der B is finally discovering how good a writer Ruhlman is, something I've known for some time.

A less happy note - According to his blog, Michael Ruhlman's father passed away earlier this week, just a month shy of his 70th birthday.  I do feel sad for him.

TOD:  Vertigo but also loved her appearances in Falcon Crest as well.

Great chicken salad on top of greens (made last night, was wonderful!):

Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:

    * 2 cups cubed cooked chicken breast (or canned chicken)
    * 1 yellow bell pepper, diced
    * 1 cup diced celery
    * 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (I used low-fat)
    * 3/4 cup Kraft low fat or non-fat Ranch dressing
    * Salt and white pepper to taste
    * 10 oz. pkg. mixed salad greens
    * 2 pears, peeled, cored, chopped

Preparation:
In medium bowl, combine chicken, bell pepper, celery, and blue cheese. Gently add salad dressing, salt and white pepper and carefully mix to coat. Cover and chill. To serve, top dinner plates with salad greens, and top with the chicken mixture. Prepare pears and sprinkle over salad. Serves 2-3

I just finished listening to a BBC program all the way through! Not such a big accomplishment you say. Well, the Beeb introduced a new media player on the site a few weeks ago and it has made listening very difficult. The performance of the new player has been, shall we say, inconsistent. Many programs appear as unavailable and for both listen again and listening live I was never able to hear an entire program. It would "time out" at some point. There are message boards asking for the old program and citing numerous complaints, not just in the U.S. but in the U.K. as well. The Beeb has not been responsive to listener complaints but this morning one of my programs which had been unavailable was suddenly available and I listened all the way without timing out. Perhaps something is happening.

Today I'll be watching and reviewing Disney's latest smash hit TV-movie CAMP ROCK on Blu-ray disc.

The Blu-ray offers the film in widescreen while the regular DVD offers only the 1.33:1 full frame version. They did this with HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2, and I much preferred the widescreen version, not just because I have a widescreen TV but because the wider frame did make it seem more like a real movie and not just a thrown together Tv show. The big dance numbers were especially more impressive in that wide frame.

This time I won't have to watch both versions. Someone else will review the sDVD.

As for the Topic of the Day - at least the diet part....

Breakfast. Breakfast. Breakfast!

-I've made a very conscious effort to have breakfast each and and every day over the past couple of weeks, and, lo and behold, I've dropped eight pounds -without really trying.  Usually it's a bowl of oatmeal with some almonds or pecans, and a small splash of maple syrup.  It's all about regulating your metabolism and blood-sugar levels throughout the WHOLE day, not just when you want to.

Otherwise, my usual "filling food" is a homemade protein/fruit smoothie made with a few extra ice cubes in order to add more "bulk" to the shake - and to contribute to my water intake for the day.

Who's idea was an 8:30am breakfast date on a Thursday morning in the middle of the summer when I'm not really working?  Oy...

Last night's rehearsal was agony - and there is no pun there.  It's a lot to explain here, but it's taken us twice as long to learn this music than necessary.  (and we have a talented cast)  Our MD breaks down every note and word in the score.  Not to say that's a bad things, but it's the way that he does it that is frustrating to actors, so frustrating that they are finding it hard to learn the music and retain everything he throws at them.

My frustration is spending WAY too much time at this point in the process of insisting the actors get the underscoring sections nailed now, with scripts in their hands while sitting in their chairs learning music.  That seems to me to be very un-realistic and a waste of everyone's time.  There is acting and blocking moments to be added in which take time in the underscore.    And we spent way too much time doing that last night IMHO.

I'm hoping for a better night this evening.  Whatever happens, it will be his fault and it won't be mine at all.

Good morning, all! I'm still feeling puny, which I do not like, and when the phone rang at 10:30 I decided to get out if bed, although I doubt I will wander far from it today.

So, I have little on my agenda today; I can deal with some libretto fixes and look over some scores I have to write about, but that will be about it.

DR Ben, would it be all right if we moved the Mitchell Trio to a week from Friday? I've got to be feeling better by then!

DR MBarnum, I think your diet suffers from a severe need for saltpeter.

I adore Kim Novak and have appreciated her distanc and disdain from Hollywood.  The fact that she is gorgeous and yet Harry Cohn always called her "that fat Pollack" (at least she had the satisfaction of attending his funeral) appeals to me. I also wrote to her on her birthday for years starting when I was about 8.  She always wrote back.  Time to do it again, I think.

Some were absolute "gimmes", but others weren't so much even remotely guessable for me.  I correctly guessed 14 of them, but made the "All that Jazz" mistake that S. Woody warned about.  It's really "Moulin Rouge".

Current, and most recent, movies and their posters aren't as familiar to me.

"West Side Story", "Gone With the Wind" and "Clockwork Orange" were instantly recognizable.

I'm at work again.

Yesterday was miserable.  Nasty, nasty head cold with constant blowing of nose.  Went through a new box of tissues, I did.

Somewhere around 6:30 p.m., the "flow" abated and I felt somewhat better.  Had a bowl of Sicilian split pea soup for din-din and watched some telly, including "Project Runway" before sliding back into bed where I had spent all of yesterday morning and most of the afternoon.

This was the first time I've had as nasty a virus as this against which none of my meds were effective.  Nothing could stop the ongoing flow of sinus material.

There is some residual chest congestion, naturally, and I'll probably be hacking a bit the next couple of days.

Just wanted to share that with all of you!!!  :D

I wish you had, too.

I once had what I call a Matthews "spotting" in San Francisco.  He was not so much "instantly recognizable" to me, but I saw this guy on the street, and saw some folks rubbernecking and talking excitedly.  As I passed them, I heard one say, "Yeah! He's the guy who made those fantasy films....Kerwin something or other".  Having seen him, I then knew immediately they meant Matthews.

I Googled him when I got home, and read that he preferred to stay out of the limelight and asked his fans to respect his privacy.

I'd have loved reading about a tea with him from you, Mike!

I have to say that "Picnic" is probably my favorite Novak performance, but very much enjoyed her in "Bell, Book and Candle" and "Vertigo", as well.

I recently watched "The Legend of Lylah Clare" on TCM.  It was the first time I'd ever seen it, and I wanted so much to love it.  But oh my goodness.  There was a lot of good in it, but it was a bit too talky and not very well written, in my opinion.   It "should have" worked, but I grew impatient with it.

I hated that Kenley (Sp?) laughed so loudly when Daniel said "I have impeccable taste".  The truth is, it's all in his head since it never seems to translate to his work.

I agree that he should have been the one to go.

I was a bit disappointed that Jerrell wasn't the winner because I thought his outfit was "classier" than the winning one (which was great.  Keith did a fantastic job on it).  Obviously, it was Shields' take on both dresses that made the difference.  Kors and Garcia were poised, I think, to declare Jerrell's the best overall, but Shields was more partial to Keith's and that is what counts.

For what it's worth, I think she should have agreed to wear both outfits on the show.

Re having breakfast to help diet - I have never liked having breakfast at least in the morning.  Even as a kid I didn't like it - it always makes me feel heavy and slowed down, so other than the odd occasion I've rarely ever eaten breakfast.

The time when I never had to worry about weight gain and could basically eat one meal a day but that meal could consist of anything at all was when I played racquet ball three times a week.  In those days (this was back in 1981ish) I weighed about 140.

Were you eating Michael Phelps' breakfast:

"...Three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise, add one omelet, a bowl of grits, and three slices of french toast with powdered sugar, then wash down with three chocolate chip pancakes."

;)

Seriously, you probably were eating the typical "big breakfast".  Just eating something light and healthy is all you and your body needs.   -And more prepared to deal with any "land mines" you may come across during the first part of your day.  A container of yogurt.  One egg, and a piece of toast. A bowl of cereal - in the proper serving size.  It all works.

"Project Runway", which was being discussed in the previous post.  If it makes no sense to you, then it's not calling attention to itself and isn't a spoiler for you.

Somehow, I don't think that's something you've ever had, or will ever have, to worry about....yes?   :D

I know it's never been, and never will be, an issue for me.

For a wonderful time-waster movie-lovers' challenge, try this game:

That is a great quiz!

One of the ones I got right.   8)

I believe Kerwin Mathew's ran an antique shop in San Francisco for many years and he always had a couple of cats. He would not do interviews (someone told me it was because he was hard of hearing in later years), but otherwise was very friendly to fans. His phone number was even listed in the directory.

You need to see Donna Lynne Champlin's act for her cautionary tale on "How I Stalked Brian D'Arcy James!

Or were you counting on Noel Coward's advice "Nice young men who sell antiques do it"?

It's a packaged soup mix that I found in a local small grocery shop.  I don't recall the brand, but I'll check on it tonight and get back to you.  They have several delicious Italian soups.

James Bond fans, Rejoice!

Today's Amazon "Gold Box" item is the 007 collection -- 21 titles for just under $100, or $4.57 per disc.

These are the four boxes that were issued a couple of years ago...all remastered and splendiferous (IMO).  Of the ones I've watched since getting the set in an earlier Gold Box offering, they looked spectacular on my plasma HDTV upconverted through my HD-DVD player.

If you kicked yourself the last time this deal was offered (a markdown of 67%), now's the time to snap it up before it's gone again.

And those are the two disc James Bond sets, BTW, not the single disc versions which sell separately. To get all the special features, you need the ultimate collection discs.

I was able to get all of the Ultimate Collection discs I wanted through Ebay sellers (I didn't need another version of the awful MOONRAKER or A VIEW TO A KILL), but if I didn't have the ones I wanted, I would certainly be tempted to do this.

The Blu-ray versions of six of them come out this fall.

I started watching the bonus features on the disc. There are two music videos, a singalong button you can turn on and have lyrics subtitled as the movie plays, and then there's karaoake mode where the lead vocals are filtered out and the viewer gets to sing lead for all 13 songs.

Then I began on the behind the scenes featurettes. The first is exclusive to Blu-ray, a tour of the sets by one of the supporting actors in the movie. The in-joke is that Joe Jonas turns up at every place we visit (and an oc screen counter records how many times he pops up during the 6 minute tour: 10 times.

Yes, Matt, it's Judy's Summer Stock. They have begun to show some of the films on DVD and depending on how it's formatted, it can be a bit off visually but it will still be great to see it on a big screen. I've only seen it on TV/DVD also. When they showed A Star is Born it was on DVD and some shots were muddy and blurred at the edges but, like SS it was great to see it on a big screen.

eggplant, peeled and diced

yellow squash, peeled and diced
tomatoes, diced
green pepper, seeded and diced

Cook it all together in a pan with a little olive oil.

But, Ron, how do you really feel?

Well, there is a difference between being thin and being healthy.
And then, there's cadaverish.

I weighed 145 from the end of high school on to about fifteen years ago, or so, when I quit smoking.

I'm much healthier now, no longer cadaverish.

Work was so joyful today.  Someone in the corporation decided to change the access codes on one of the major computer programs that all of our managers use in order to order things to sell, but neglected to make sure all of our managers had the access codes so that they could do said ordering.  That I, too, need access to that program, in order to get access to the records of the orders, was just a minor blip in comparison.

Of course, when calls were made to the corporate help desk, the reply everyone got was that only the store manager at every store was allowed to hand out access codes.  Guess which store's manager had the day off today!

I am so looking forward to Sunday and Monday, which I will have off.  (Yes, I will be available for scorekeeping!)

I should check on the chicken breasts I have roasting in the oven.

I'm probably already too far behind in getting the risotto started.  Such is life.

Spinach as a veg, to finish the menu.

I agree, BK, that Wall-E didn't find it's audience is bewildering and saddening.  I can only hope that somehow it will do better on DVD.

Maybe the lack of dialogue was the problem - too many people need to be told everything, in order to know how to think.  They even need "judges" on shows like American Idol and Dancing With the Stars to help them understand what they've heard and seen.  I shudder to think how today's audiences would receive The Red Balloon.  It's scary.

Either that, or instead of the clips from Hello, Dolly, maybe they should have used a video by Miley Cyrus.   :P

Yep, the chicken is done and the risotto isn't.  I guess that's why having a lid for the pan with the chicken is helpful.

Ron, you mentioned Sicilian split pea soup. I used to be quite the split pea soup fan, but have never heard of a Sicilian version. Could you 'splain, please?

Jeanne:  The brand name is Alessi Traditional, and the varieties I buy are Spaccarelli (Sicilian Split Pea Soup), Zuppa Toscana (Tuscan White Bean Soup), Lenticchie (Sicilian Lentil Soup). and Pasta Fazool (Neapolitan Bean Soup).  "Fagioli" is Italian for "bean" which in Southern Italian dialect becomes "fazool."  All the soups have pasta, beans and veggies/spices unique to the soups.  I buy these soups at the Piedmont Grocery in Oakland, a really special "little" neigborhood grocery that carries amazing things (fresh produce, fresh meats/seafood and a vast array of cheeses are everyday items).

These are packaged (i.e. dry) soups that you add to 36 oz boiling water.  Each soup is ready to eat anywhere from 12-15 minutes.  I add a little olive oil at the finish, and serve with parmesan on top.  They taste REALLY good!  Warning: The sodium in each is anywhere from 680 to 740 mg.

A website you can visit to learn more is www.vigo-alessi.com.  Vigo Importing Company is out of Tampa FL.

BTW, while at the bank today I asked to cancel a credit card I never use--and never wanted in the first place. I was told that since I've only had it two years I shouldn't cancel, that that would show up as some sort of black mark on my credit. Apparently, once an account is opened you should keep it for at least three years, even if you never use it. You can, however, consolidate two or more accounts with the same bank, with no ill effects.

I've also noticed that banks are coming up with all sorts of new rules to justify additional charges.

Beware!

After documenting the construction progress at Arena Stage, I hopped back the Green Line, then on to the Orange Line to head out to Merrifield. Once I was there, I met up with my dear friend, Leigh.  It's been a year or two since we've seen each other in person, and I'm so glad that it worked out schedule-wise for both of use to get together tonight for dinner.

We headed on over to one of our favorite places, Sweetwater Tavern (http://www.greatamericanrestaurants.com/sweetMainMeri/).  She had their always amazing Cheddar Burger, and I treated myself to their Prime Rib.  The food, as always, was very good, however, our server tonight was surprisingly and uncharacteristically "absent" for a good portion of our meal.  -However, I did happen to notice him having a "discussion" with one of the managers at one point during our meal, so.... Ah, well.  In any case...

We had a great time catching up.  And dishing, of course.  ;)

For all the DRs who don't have Netflix subscriptions, I had an email from them early this morning saying that they had a shipping problem and that the DVD I was expecting today was most likely delayed. No cover-up, no denial; they admitted they had a problem and notified their customers (at least some of us--I can't speak for everyone) right away. They also said they'd give us credit for the "missing" days. That's the sort of customer service I like. I understand that problems occur; from what I can see, they're handling it quite well. The rest, of course, remains to be seen.

Favorite diet meal:

eggplant, peeled and diced
zuchini, peeled and slice
yellow squash, peeled and diced
tomatoes, diced
green pepper, seeded and diced

Cook it all together in a pan with a little olive oil.

I am sure SWoody and Jose can fine-tune it.

Hmm...  Sounds like a very good Sauteed Vegetable Medley to me...  Maybe add some fresh mint to finish it off...  Or even possibly a basic ratatouille... And if happen to cook it down a bit until the veggies are mushy and add some olives, then you'd have caponata...

I think you are being too hard on it.  Is it a masterpiece? No.

Even though it is a musical, I think you have to consider that you are not its target audience.

It has a) the jonas brothers and b) the lead girl was very good.

I enjoyed it and i've seen many movies. And i doubt i'm in the target audience either. :)

Sorry, but that's BS.

I enjoyed BOTH of the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL films, and even found much to like about JUMP-IN! which was clearly modeled on the first HSM. I wasn't the target audience for any of them.

This movie was by-the-numbers trite. Didn't measure up IN ANY WAY to the HSM films. The lead girl certainly has potential, but she needs desperate correction with her strained, breathy (almost sounding like she's aching) appraoch to singing. Of course, Joe Jonas sings that way, too, so they were paired well. The other two Jonas Brothers should not act (or not until they've had some lessons.)

I began my evening watching the rest of the CAMP ROCK bonus features. There was about an hour more of various featurettes. Always enjoy seeing the rehearsals that lead to the filming over a six week period. The featurette on HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 went into more of the rehearsal footage (and the dancing was much more intricate) than this CAMP ROCK one does, but it's still fun to see.

And the movie was originally just slated to star Joe Jonas, but since the brothers Jonas are brothers, the other two got shoe-horned into the plot - and the movie - at the last minute.

And since I actually help cast some of the "Disney drivel", I have to say that this movie was most definitely a rush job - and it shows.

I agree completely; there's a definite lack of polish to the numbers.

It accomplished its purpose of giving Disney another great TV-movie audience puller, and I'm sure there will be a sequel (the final number makes that obvious)

I ended up with a great deal of the evening free, so I watched Bette Davis and Claude Rains spar like grand champions in DECEPTION. Wild melodrama and very talky but a pretty fun movie.

Next, I watched last night's PROJECT RUNWAY. I was split on the two winners. I didn't think either one was clearly better than the other and it certainly could have gone either way, but they were both attractive.

I had no problem with the selection of the eventual loser. She was not a favorite (and as for her partner, it's just a matter of time.)

But I've said before, I don't like the team competitions. EVER.

BURN NOTICE was great tonight, a very engrossing episode with lots of roadblocks to deal with.

But boy did I want Michael to punch Victor out! His haughty attitude definitely needed some adjustment.

And I'm just making sure.... But wasn't tonight's "Project Runway" shown last night too?

Great review for Skip's one-act at 59E59, even though mixed for the whole production:

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117937984.html?categoryid=33&cs=1

Terrence McNally and Skip Kennon's lovely little musical comedy "Plaisir D'Amour," which makes excellent use of "Avenue Q" vet Stephanie D'Abruzzo as Ruth and Jonathan C. Kaplan as her partner Sam. It feels odd to call a 30-minute show an extravaganza, but that's the most fitting word. ...

But the prize goes, no contest, to "Plaisir D'Amour," mostly because of the amazing synchronization of all its disparate elements. It's not any one song that makes the brief show (really a mini-opera) such a treat. It's lyrics like Sam's internal "Go up and chat with her; be charming and be chipper," while Ruth thinks "He could just be a lieder-loving Jack the Ripper" underneath the strains of the singer (Rita Harvey) they're both pretending to listen to, crooning in French about the pleasures of love. Sam finally overcomes his shyness, by the way, with a gentlemanly "You have great tits."

That's most of what you need to know about "Summer Shorts," and maybe short play festivals in general. This one, like most others, will disappoint you, it will annoy you by wasting your time, and when you're just about fed up, it will knock your socks off."

What regular media are you referring to?

Be specific.
 ;)

CBS has shown the full frontal LZR shot as part of their evening (almost) coverage - it was part of a graphic which detail some of his key dimensional characteristics (I said "some" :) ) They even gave us a close up of his famous 14" (feet).

Much better rehearsal tonight.  I insisted on much levity, and it seemed to work.  Also, we discovered that the first 6 notes of "No One Is Alone" can easily be the first 6 notes of "The Candy Man"!
