One interesting thing about watching Splash, which was mostly shot on location in NY, is that Broadway was still lined with movie theaters all throughout Times Square, two or three on every block, this in 1984.  How did it come to pass that in just twenty years' time every single one of them is gone - not one movie theater ON B'way in Times Square, where once, during its heyday, there were probably thirty.

How did it come to pass that in just twenty years' time every single one of them is gone - not one movie theater ON B'way in Times Square, where once, during its heyday, there were probably thirty.

The value of real estate in an area like today's Times Square is based on income generated per cubic foot. For large volume venues like movie theatre's to be a profitable use of the space would require a movie-going audience no longer available. It just isn't Times Square - look at any other major urban core - the number of theatre structures have greatly declined. Even small towns have lost their cinemas - today's movie watching public heads to suburban malls for the multiplex.

How many movie tickets did you buy a year in 1980? How many last year?

I enjoyed the performers and the performances.  Everyone sounded great.  Some of the songs were very good, some were pretty good.  None were bad, but it was a long evening, almost (but not quite) three hours.  The kid (late teens) sitting next to me said that he heard from someone involved in the show that the rehearsal performance the night before was three hours and forty minutes long!!  I don't doubt that it'll be shortened by the end of their run.  Young Frankenstein that I saw last year was shortened by more than a half hour by the last Seattle performance.

I don't want to adversely influence JulieC40's opinion before she sees it.  See it with an open mind!  The singers are very good and the set pieces and turntable floor are all pretty cool.  Christopher Sieber was very funny as Lord Farquaad.  He was literally on his knees the entire evening (Farquaad is very short)!  He had fake legs attached to his real legs and he walked on his knees.

The worst part of the evening was when I was leaving the parking garage.  I had gotten the parking ticket out of my pocket shortly after I left the theater (I don't know why) and by the time I got to my car, I didn't realize that I had dropped it.  I got to the payment gate and that's when I realized that I didn't have the ticket!  Since there were cars behind me and I didn't see it anywhere, I had to pay full price.  Instead of it being the $7 evening special, it was $26! :P

AARRGGHH!! >:(

Tip o' the day:  don't lose your parking ticket. :'(

Hello, everyone!  My name's June; what's yours?

Sorry to be so E&T this week.  Yesterday we went walking.  Walked around the UN complex and around the Tudor City neighborhood.  Walked past the studio where Rachel Ray's show is taped.  Then downtown a bit, we walked around the Grammercy Park neighborhood.  We ate lunch in Chelsea, then had a private tour of the Masonic Temple.  So many rooms, each more magnificent than the one before!  Jayson got to play many of the organs [each room has its own].  A quick stop at the Shake Shack capped the day!

TOD:

Book:  I've been leafing through Michael Ruhlman and Brian Polcyn's Charcuterie again.  This because of the rillettes stuff that der B posted yesterday.  The rillettes are in the same chapter that tells how to make confit.  In any case, while it takes a long time for the meats to cook properly, it doesn't at all sound time consuming, when you get into the actual labor involved.  And there's a recipe for pork confit that calls for using boneless pork loin - guess what we've got on sale at the store this week!  Yummers, to quote a friend.

DVD:  The Second Season of EUReKA has a nice bonus featuring the writers, going into how they work on the writing.  I guess that's better than showing them playing ping-pong, since that's what they get paid to do.  What made the bonus bit interesting was that it is about how they're writing the third season, and how the writer's strike has affected the show's production.

And I've about six eps left of the Two Fat Ladies series.  Here's a case of where spoilage, and the knowledge that Jennifer died quite suddenly of lung cancer, can actually add to the viewing - Jennifer giving an odd cough here and there, and Clarissa commenting, when they are visiting a smokehouse, that it must be what Jennifer's lungs look like.

And there's a box of things that I know the contents of, but der B won't be giving me said box until Sunday.  But I know what's in there!  Come out, come out, wherever you are!

Since I suspect some producer types are among the guests here, I hope it's ok to essentially reproduce  a post from All That Chat about the whole Series B of the evening at 59E59.

Series B seems to have gotten the kind of reviews where different critics are totally loving different pieces, and all of the pieces have gotten some nice comments from the critics so far. [except for Backstage's critic, whose review came out with great speed and little analysis - incredibly, while he found something to enjoy in all of Series A, the Backstage critic perversely is on his own, so far anyway, in finding none of the pieces in Series B to his liking, even with the great diversity among the pieces, but the review did come out quickly, I'll say that for him].

But given my bias towards Skip and Plaisir d'Amour, here are some quotes about series B that just happen to be handy :)

PEOPLESPEAK

Aaron Riccio on Theater Talk’s New Theater Corps: “PeopleSpeak operates the same way: the play very comically opens with Siobhan (the excellent Sherry Anderson) getting interrupted mid-suicide by a call from her mother (the persistently creative sort who sends musical affirmations by mail), but then using that dark comedy to turn the mirror back on our isolated, text-heavy cellular world. Even when things go overboard, with a friendly waiter (the comic Nick Westrate) "channeling" an overly moral spirit to neatly bring the play to a close, the energy is buoyant enough to keep things afloat.”

David Barbour, L&S Online: "Can't people go one second when they're not on the phone?" wonders the beleaguered heroine of PeopleSpeak. Apparently not, if you're going by this fast and funny farce, the highlight of Summer Shorts Series B. It begins with Siobhan, a middle-aged "permanent temp," about to blow her brains out. (We never learn the details of the tragedy that has left her suicidal, but it apparently involves credit-card debt, infidelity, cancer, and AIDS.) Before she can pull the trigger, however, she's interrupted by a call from her mother, who quite reasonably points out that Siobhan's problems could be worse -- after all, she could be like the human torso in the circus. "At least she has a job she likes," notes Siobhan.
Her effort at self-annihilation thwarted, Siobhan heads to a Village café, where she has to deal with Cassie, her staggeringly narcissistic employer. ("You are an ox. You are a great big strong ox. And I mean that in the nicest way," Cassie says, offering her own peculiar brand of comfort.) Serving -- or rather, not serving -- them is Brian, a waiter, who is so busy relating the details of his sex life, via phone and text message, that he has no time to deliver food or drink. ("Put your hand down or I will call you out like you're a number in a bingo game," he warns one starved customer.)
And so it goes, as Siobhan works through multiple self-help tomes, reading out "affirmations" ("I deserve to take up space") and worrying about her medication wearing off, while everyone around her is on the phone, blabbing, in the language of pop therapy, about him or herself. The playwright, John Augustine, is the life partner of Christopher Durang, as well as his co-star in the cabaret act Chris Durang and Dawne; he shares Durang's impatience with spurious positive-thinking gurus like Louise Hay, but he has his own special knack for wild twists -- including the mortifying hidden link between Cassie and Brian -- that keep the plot bubbling along.
The action could be trimmed by a few minutes -- the fun thins a bit when Brian starts channeling advice-giving voices from the beyond -- but, under Robert Saxner's limber direction, PeopleSpeak provides steady amusement throughout. As Siobhan, Sherry Anderson (another member of Dawne) has a thousand-and-one facial expressions suitable for signaling moral outage, and Patricia Randell is a garrulously funny Cassie. But it's Nick Westrate who has a mini-triumph as Brian, doubling also as a leering construction worker, a text-messaging cab driver, the operator of a donut kiosk, and another customer in the café, who gets out while the getting is good.”

PLAISIR d’AMOUR

Variety: “Terrence McNally and Skip Kennon's lovely little musical comedy "Plaisir D'Amour," which makes excellent use of "Avenue Q" vet Stephanie D'Abruzzo as Ruth and Jonathan C. Kaplan as her partner Sam. It feels odd to call a 30-minute show an extravaganza, but that's the most fitting word. ... But the prize goes, no contest, to "Plaisir D'Amour," mostly because of the amazing synchronization of all its disparate elements. It's not any one song that makes the brief show (really a mini-opera) such a treat. It's lyrics like Sam's internal "Go up and chat with her; be charming and be chipper," while Ruth thinks "He could just be a lieder-loving Jack the Ripper" underneath the strains of the singer (Rita Harvey) they're both pretending to listen to, crooning in French about the pleasures of love.”

David Finkle on theatremania.com: “Plaisirs d'Amour, which takes its cue from the traditional French ditty but doesn't reprise it, begins with early-stage love pleasures and advances and moves on to the inevitable disillusioning phases that McNally obviously believes speedily follow. Ruth (Stephanie D'Abruzzo) and Sam (Jonathan C. Kaplan) meet cute at a recital where a soprano (Rita Harvey in the first of several roles) is holding forth on love's vagaries. Thereafter, the couple marries, raise children, indulge infidelities and, years later, reach a convincingly realistic conclusion about their relationship. The piece will strike some inveterate theater fans as a variation on Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, but McNally and Kennon's lovely melodies and deft lyrics make the enterprise decidedly appealing, as do the accomplished actor-singers (who also include Neal Mayer in a range of supporting roles).”

Aaron Riccio on Theater Talk’s New Theater Corps: “Of course, the real reason to see either series is for Roger Hedden's Deep in the Hole (Series A) or Terrence McNally and Skip Kennon's mini-musical Plaisir D'Amour (Series B) ... outstanding performances from Stephanie D'Abruzzo and Jonathan C. Kaplan as they chronicle a relationship from the desperate single life to the troubled married life and eventually, with their own children now married, to the comfortable afterglow of a once passionate life … does for a transient comedy what Prelude & Liebestod did for drama.”

ON ISLAND

Variety: “What's nice about the piece, aside from Jorge Cordova's turn as the concerned older brother, is that the writer has fully developed characters in mind and knows exactly how they talk and where he wants to go with them.”

David Finkle at theatermania.com: “Anyone who saw Domitrovich's Artfuckers this past year will probably be unprepared for the gentle sagacity of On Island. Greek groom-to-be George (Anthony Carrigan) is getting cold feet before his marriage to the Jewish Sandi (Lisa Birnbaum) on a Martha's Vineyard beach. So he's retreated with brother Leo (Jorge Cordova) to work through the qualms that threaten to overwhelm him. There's much fraternal love here, and when cooling-her-heels-at-the-altar Sandi arrives to get to the delay's bottom, there's even more genuine love circulating on the symbolic sand. Never mind that the glue binding the about-to-be-newlyweds and brother Leo seems to hinge on their shared affection for cult-movie Airplane! These churning Edgartown waters run deep, especially as expertly guided by director Mary Catherine Burke.”

Aaron Riccio on Theater Talk’s New Theater Corps: “Michael Domitrovich's On Island (Series B) also makes a nice go of it: while his groom-with-cold-feet plot is nothing new, Leo's attempt to help his brother, George, feel more comfortable about marrying Sandi, especially in the honest recounts of their childhood memories, sells the piece.”

OUR TIME IS UP (the short curtain-raiser)

Variety: “Reddin's play, about a precocious kid (Clara Hopkins Daniels) who turns the tables on her analyst (Janet Zarish), has some real lightness to it; "Time" isn't an entree but it could be a nice appetizer.”

David Barbour, L&S Online: “Callie, a teenager, has been sent to Sharon for analysis because her parents are worried about Anna, her imaginary friend. Anna may be a symptom, but she apparently has an encyclopedic knowledge of Freudian and Jungian theory, and, in minutes, Callie has Sharon in tears, disclosing her ambivalent feelings about her father. It's the kind of thing you might have seen on The Carol Burnett Show 30 years ago, but it has a few laughs, thanks to Janet Zarish's quick-on-the-trigger emoting as Sharon and Clara Hopkins Daniels' skillful underplaying as Callie. Billy Hopkins' direction handles the material with a light touch.”

It's definitely one of those pieces that is/was not for everyone, and even the cast album was recorded live it worked much better in the theatre. The world and community that was created in the theatre just can't be duplicated on disc. I didn't love the show, but I got it.

GEORGE,
Re: the lost parking ticket. That happened to me once, too. They are very easy to lose. My car has a little thingy near the radio/CD player that I think was intended for a pen, but it works perfectly for holding my parking ticket while I'm in the car. That works out well for me. I did eventually find the lost parking ticket; it was under the driver's seat--and I had looked there, too! When I drop things in the car they usually fall between the consol and the driver's seat; I know that know from experience! I also have a secure spot in my purse for such items. Again, not foolproof, but a help.

I must be the only person on earth who actually quotes Marie Christine. Didn't get a chance to see it, but there are some songs and passages in the score that I absolutely love. For my money, if LaChiusa could ever spend ten minutes editing his friggin' lyrics (or, better yet, get a decent lyricist to work with him) and taking some advice on how to actually entertain an audience, he'd be one of the best theatrical composers out there. That being said, on to the TOD.

On the iPod: Hairspray cast recording, The Little Mermaid (Israeli soundtrack), Parvarim (Israeli folk duo) box set
The DVD drive: Monk, season 6, disc two

Good morning, all! I have to step out tonight to a Fringe Festival show, "The Boss In The Satin Kimono" and it will be nice to spend some time with Matthew, my best friend from college and celebrate his birthday.

DR FJL, the reviews for that dreadful last one act were kinder than I'll ever be; it was dreadful, boring, and contaned not one semblance of any reality i've ever experienced. Thank God for the other three summer shorts.

DR elan, now that Mr LaChiusa's a "serious" composer, getting opera commissions from operatic morons who don't know good musical theatre and think the crap he puts on paper is music: it's tuneless and shapeless so it must be serious contemporary music, I think he's guilty of believing his press, as evidenced by his cruel rundown of Mark Shaiman and other Broadway successes in his infamous OPERA NEWS article.

Two more performances of Singin In the Rain!  And then it will be OVAH!

Congrats to Skip on his fine reviews!  Thanks for posting them and the links, DR FJL.

I could not find any photo of Michael Phelps, unless it is the one of him wearing the NEW swimsuit when it was first introduced.  He certainly seems to be glad to have it on.

Otherwise, all of the swimmers seem to be taking the tops down in order to hide the business area when being photographed out of the water...but of course they take them WAAYYYYYYYYYYYY down.

Because Mandingo wasn't controlled by an anal twit who doesn't see how one song presentation in "Dumbo" is far more profoundly racist than anything in the whole of  "Song of the South".

I find myself in mini-quandary about the Olympics.

I'm where I was 36 years ago when Mark Spitz was going for an unprecedented 7 Gold Medals.   At thrilling as the accomplishment would be for anyone, it seemed to be all that anyone could talk about...and that always seemed to be at the expense of other fine athletes.

That Michael Phelps has now won as many Gold Medals as he has in two Olympics Games is astounding.  He is the all-time medals champion in winning Gold Medals.

I do want him to succeed, and I know I'll be thrilled for him if he manages to do a sweep, but I also feel strongly that if his teammates, who hold current records in the coming events, beat him out for the Gold then it's a good thing, too.

Hello from extremely sunny southern Oregon.  We spent yesterday at Crater Lake, which was magnificent.  The info we were sent on this locale warned us about the "harmless" midge insects which infest this territory in the summer.  They unfortunately did not tell us about the swarming mosquitos which have eaten us alive, or, sadly, the migrating monarch butterfly population which has largely met its fate on the front of every car we've seen down here.

GEORGE,
Re: the lost parking ticket.

I know I should've left the ticket in the car.  What was I thinking??  And as as I drove past the gate (after paying the darned $26), I saw what could only have been my ticket, right there on the ground. :P

What a strange morning.

I've been scheduling a meeting for next week...or attempting to...and it involves so many people I have to do a spread sheet just to track who's available when, how to contact them, what their preferred dates are and what fall-back dates are acceptable.

These are the County people.  Then there's the landlord without whom the meeting cannot be held, and I can only "wait" and "wait" and "wait" to hear back from him and hope that everyone keeps all the "availabilities" they offered to me yesterday and this moring open long enough to get it all together.

I"m actually conflicted about this too.  I mean Phelps is fantasticly good. But a couple of those other guys could definitely beat him.

I am curious though what the reaction would be in the US. I sort of feel like most people would be disappointed if one of the others won.

I have been watching the Olympics every night, since that is when the swimming comes on.

I will say that I had wondered how much NBC would show live. And while i have not watched them at night, i have been recording what they show from 10am-1pm. Lot of swimming heats and other stuff i've enjoyed.

I"m actually conflicted about this too.  I mean Phelps is fantasticly good. But a couple of those other guys could definitely beat him.

I am curious though what the reaction would be in the US. I sort of feel like most people would be disappointed if one of the others won.

I'm still waiting for our first medal period! (i am confident for rowing, diving, maybe 1500m swimming or cycling!

The U.S. media is WAY too overboard in emphasizing his potential of winning 8 golds.   If he doesn't, there will be a huge letdown, I'm sure of it, and it won't be his fault.   It's happened before as the media tries to pump up interest by proclaimin "potential".  In many cases, it's just not there and the athletes suffer from the attention that is suddenly thrust upon them.

There was a female swimmer in Atlanta named Summer Sanders.  She was good and had a chance at medals on relays.   The press presented her as the next BIG THING...and that probably weighed heavily on some of her lackluster swims.

Beth Heiden, sister of Eric who won five speed skating Golds many years ago, was on the women's team.  The press pounced on her as a good bet to be the female version of Eric.  She never was.  She was pretty vocal about it in interviews at the Olympics, too.

I have a question re: BK and others trying to lose weight.

Today BK was mentioning that he had a subway sandwich. For him he is watching calories and fat grams. And both were listed. So fine, you'd know exactly what you're getting.

But it seems like BK eats 90% of his meals out (or take-out). I probably make 90% of my meals (as an example).

I know that when i eat out, i usually have no idea how many calories i am eating. There are so many sauces. And you don't really know what extras they put in there.

I know people have been saying that it's better to eat breakfast. And eat a few meals a day. But i'm wondering if eating out can make it a lot harder to lose weight since you don't really know what they are putting into what you are eating.

The good thing about Phelps is that he seems to do fine with the pressure. Most others would not be able to handle it.

He was lucky though in that first relay. They barely got the gold. And he really had no control over it.

I feel really bad for those other US swimmers if they beat him. :(

Btw, re: MattH's comments about CAMP ROCK.  It changes my opinion to know you really liked the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICALS (i had originally thought that you just thought they were done better).  I didn't mean to discount your opinions (since i really cannot stand when people think their opinion is the only one that is right).

I do still think that it probably hit the mark for the tweens and teens who love the jonas brothers. I know my 13 year old niece loves them (the jonas brothers) and the movie.

I began my afternoon watching last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. I got teary several times in this episode. Many of the men she met were SO upbeat, and it just broke my heart (though they seemed to be doing fine with their rehab.) They have great heart and great determination, and my hat is off to them.

From the comments Kathy made at the very end of the show, it sounded like there will be another season of the show, but that is certainly contrary to an interview I read when the season began.

I had time (since the movie is so short) to watch all of the bonus features on the disc. There's an almost half hour "making-of" documentary. There was the kid film made by the director when he was young that inspired this movie. There was the home movie contest winner's 5-minute entry in the style of the movie-within-a-movie in SON OF RAMBOW.

And I got about 30 minutes of the audio commentary listened to. The director, the producer, and the two young stars did the commentary, and they never take a breath.

I have a question re: BK and others trying to lose weight.

But i'm wondering if eating out can make it a lot harder to lose weight since you don't really know what they are putting into what you are eating.

DR Jennifer - This is sort of a "DUH!" statement to me.

If you like at most any diet, eating plan, nutritional "journey", they all mention that eating out is one of the sure ways to sabotage one's diet.  Just as you mentioned, there is really no way to know exactly what you're eating, and really just how much you're eating.  There could be lots of hidden fat, hidden salt(!) and hidden sugars in prepared foods whether it's from a restaurant or a fast food joint.

Yes, almost all fast food joints and even some chain restaurants make their nutritional values available to their customers either in-house or on their websites, but who's really gonna look at those before you place your order?  -Which is why a lot of times you will see "If you must eat out, do not clean your plate."

There have been many studies over the years showing how even some "healthy options" on restaurant menus are really not that healthy.

*In New York City right now, there is a movement to get more of the sodium - and not just in the form of salt -  content placed on menus, especially in Korean and Chinese restaurants.  I've come across more than a few reports of people getting "sodium poisoning" after consuming a "typical meal" someplace.  One gentleman I read about was told by his doctor - after he had been rushed to the hospital - that he most likely consumed 560%(!!!) the recommended daily amount of sodium during the course of one casual, quick meal at a Korean place.  Can you sawy MSG?

**I'm always amazed at some of the sodium counts in the pre-packaged sandwiches they carry at Starbucks now.  Some of them contain over half of you RDA.  -And if you ever check out the sodium content of most canned soups and frozen food meal... Yikes!

Fortunately Phelps is a gracious winner; and, for whatever it is worth, US Swimming, as a whole, would benefit from the extra publicity a medal sweep would bring. I'm glad that CBS makes no effort to avoid being USA-centic.

Back from my lunch at Musso and Frank, which was just what I needed.  I had the combo Louis, and I was as good with the Louis dressing as I've ever been - although, even when I've used a bowl of the stuff I've never gained weight from eating the Louis.  Today I had a very reasonable amount of the Louis dressing, and then used cocktail sauce for the rest.  It's a very filling meal and I won't need to eat anything else, so that coupled with the long jog on the new route should make everything fine.

As to eating out a lot, I, in fact, don't.  I tend to eat at the same places if I'm doing fast food, and I know exactly what I'm in for at those places - I know the exact fat gram and calories of the sandwiches I eat at the Subway, I know the calorie and fat gram count of the tacos at Taco Bell, etc.  I'm also smart enough to know that the La La's chicken is very diet-conscious (no sauce, no salt, no sugar) and let's just say when I'm in this mode I don't make mistakes.  It did take a long time for me to lose that first ten pounds, but I feel that my metabolic rate is now where it should be and so if I eat under 1500 to 2000 calories, I will lose two to three pounds a week now.

I think that DR MBarnum should come to NYC for a certain benefit concert the esteemed BK is setting up. . .
Maybe DR Jose could talk John Abraham into being a back up dancer for "Turkey Lurkey Time."

Something tells me his agent won't allow to sing or dance back-up anymore.

And speaking of wine...

Tomorrow morning, I shall be trekking down to Richmond with my brother and his family.  They will actually be continuing down to Virginia Beach for a week's vacation, but they will be dropping me off at Steve's in the morning.

Then Steve and I will be heading down to Charlottesville for the afternoon and evening.  The Richmond Men's Chorus is having their summer retreat - a.k.a. winery tour and barbecue - and I shall be tagging along for the festivities.  And it looks like it should be a very nice weather-wise too.

bk - I think it could be quite the eye-opening "experiment" for you if you headed to a supermarket one day - when it's not too busy - and walked up and down each aisle and took notice of what was on the shelves now.  I have a feeling you may find some new favorites, as well as discover some old ones that have been repackaged for "today's consumers".

When I started at the store three years ago, there was a very small amount of shelfspace dedicated to "natural" foods.

Now, we have an entire aisle dedicated to the stuff.

That at least a third of that aisle is the "all natural" versions of junk food (chips, bars, snackies of all sorts) says more about us as a civilization than the growth of "all natural".

Ok, now that I"m somewhere I can actually post.  SUPERIOR DOUGHNUTS was very good. Michael McKean plays a 59 year old hippie who still has his pony tail, still smokes pot and is still a peacenik.  He runs the family doughnut shop that is definitely in decline, but he doesn't really seem to care.  He was wonderful.

Jon Michael Hill plays the energetic, bright young black man who is hired to work in the doughnut shop.  Much of the play is the relationship that builds between these two characters.  I don't want to say much more about the plot.  He gave a really powerful performance.

Yasen Payenkov is the Russian who runs the DVD store next door.

Here's a link to some photos from the production  http://www.steppenwolf.org/watchlisten/photo_galleries/detail.aspx?id=258  you gotta seem Micheal McKean with a pony tail

The play was very funny, very touching and a really enjoyable evening.  I stayed for part of the post play discussion, but decided I didn't need to hear people analyze the show, I liked it and I got it.

One of the questions was whether people thought it could transfer out of Chicago because of all the Chicago references.  I don't think there would be a problem with that at all and I hope they do it so more people can see it.   I almost have to laugh at the idea that it would be a problem.  It's sort of like saying if you aren't from New York City you wouldn't understand IN THE HEIGHTS.

Anyway, I loved it.

I decided to go ahead and start PBS' THE PRESIDENTS since it's such a gargantuan box. The first disc is Theodore Roosevelt, and the 213 minute documentary is divided into four parts. I got to within 15 minutes of finishing it. Wonderfully done with good presentation of facts with appropriate vintage footage and stills, historians like David McCullough commenting on the life and career of the person being analyzed, and members of the person's family who can give their own recollections and opinions.

I'm really going to enjoy these discs even if they will take me the better part of a week to get through them all.

I got an advance on season two of Adam 12 - it's only taken about two years to come out, this time not via Universal, who made the series, but the Shout Factory.  For those who remember my jottings on the show, I'm very fond of it, and season one is filled with incredible location shots all filmed around my neighborhood and North Hollywood - one shot was filmed almost around the corner from me and I was able to see what was formerly where the Quickie's Pizza was, and another shot featured Gelson's circa 1968 when it was just a small market with a tiny parking lot.  Several shots of the El Portal when it was a movie theater, and great stuff filmed right on Ventura Blvd. near me.  I'm expecting season two will be more of the same.  As I was heading a mile up the street to get gas, I was reminded that back when these shows were filmed there were usually two gas stations on every corner of every street in the Valley.  Now you're lucky if you can find one within a mile on a major street, sometimes two miles.

Back again for just a moment. I guess others have read already that Warners is postponing the release of HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE from November to next summer. Seems they didn't have anything BIG ready for next summer to match their big guns from this summer, so POTTER gets moved.

My DMIL is "as well as can be expected" & we are to be patient.  That tells us a lot.

It sure does: either you should be patient, she'll die soon or, be patient she'll be better soon. How clever of the staff to offer "hope" to all concerned, regardless of their expectations. (Of course, in either case, are you not relieved of concern.)

That is because the retail gasoline market is not very profitable (high prices notwithstanding). In fact, many places loose money on the gas but make their profit on the mini-stores attached. Exxon-Mobil has decided to sell their retail outlets because of the poor profit picture.

Maybe there is more to the story:

HARRY POTTER SCARED BY HORSE (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,404681,00.html)

Quote
A naked Harry Potter has scared off the movie "Harry Potter."

Warner Bros. has announced moving its sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," from Nov. 21, 2008, to July 17, 2009. The reason? Officially, there is no reason, except that "a spot opened on the summer schedule."

That's not much of a reason. The real story? Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will be right in the middle of his sensational, highly publicized run on Broadway in the play, "Equus." Radcliffe appears naked in the play, on stage, and has sex in it as well. That's not the image Warner Bros. wants associated with bespectacled Harry, who remains chaste and virginal.

Indeed, posters for Equus are up all over New York, of Radcliffe's naked torso superimposed on a horse's head. This is not the sort of thing that's taught at Hogwarts. For the movie to open on Nov. 21, Radcliffe would have to do publicity entailing answering questions about blinding horses and having sex with them vs. flying around and making potions.

Warner Bros. does not want this scenario. By the time "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" debuts, "Equus" will either have concluded its run or Radcliffe will have completed his contract. And there will be little mention of any horsing around.

Other news items have the producer's blaming the writers' strike.

Notes from the Woods:   Evidently my job as the Asst. MD is to protect the integrity of notes, rhythms and words as the MD seems to miss most of the mistakes.  Don't get me started.... However, the following scenario happened in rehearsal:

Cinderella:  When we entered I trumpeted
Me: (corrects the lyric) - cast and Cinderella chuckle
Narrator says:  Well, on Broadway now, you could probably enter trumpeting as everyone is playing instruments these days.

About 1/3 of the cast laughed, the other 2/3 looked confused, the MD got bent as he didn't get the joke.

See what I deal with????    :P
