Title: LET ME COUNT THE WAYS
Post by: bk on August 19, 2008, 12:17:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes counted the ways, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently counting the ways and also the means.

So, I go to post the notes in my usual page, and AOL can't find the site.  I'm immediately nervous, but Safari has no problem finding the site and I post the notes.  Then I try to go to this here website via AOL - can't find the site.  Safari - no problem.  I ask you - what in HELL can be so screwed up with AOL that it can find every other site but this one.

Same here - it seems the Unseemley button link to page two of the notes is broken. Attempts to call up the notes from the archieves also fails.

Good morning, all! Like BK, I am thrilled yesterday is over and I hope today will be a much better day.

Most of my day is taken up with December concert arrangements for the NYC Gay Men's Chorus, two popular songs from 1937 and 1951 and I need to finish them this week.  There's been no word from Laurel Masse, so that job may not be happening but Kip has asked me for medley and I told him I would think about it after this choral work was finished.

Vibes and xylophones to BK and all of us for a better day today![move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Wow, I'm here. I had such tsuris getting here. I was locked out since last night. Jose sent me a new link and I'm finally in. Now I have to send the links to my home computer. I don't know how my bookmarks changed although the ever smart Jose mentioned something about the archives changing and since he supplied the link that got me here today I'll believe him.

Before that I tried 3 computers and 3 browsers and nothing got me past the first page of BKs notes. I still can't get to the second page of the notes with the TOD but I'm here and I've re-bookmarked using the new links so I guess I'll stay!

I should have enough time to finish LBJ this afternoon and start on NIXON.

One of the fabulous things about these documentaries is that not only am I finding out about the men and their families, but it's also an amazing historical compendium as well. American History of the 20th Century in one 35 hour box set!

Olympics on TV tonight.

I'm not interested at all in the NCIS rerun tonight. It is from this season, but it's a ridiculous Abby-centered episode as she puts her job on the line to save an innocent dog. Abby is by far my least favorite character on the show, so any episode that gives Pauley Perrette more than the usual screen time is not one I ever enjoy.

If you still have that card and are willing to part with it, please let me know. Eighty-Eights was a home away from home, and I hold Karen & Co. fully responsible for my marriage to The Lovely Wife[tm] and the ensuing results at left...

Are you thinking of Matt Berman? There were a few lighting people working the area, but I believe he was the regular in-house guy.

We did go through this back in the day. I remember Perry more from Rose's Turn than 88s, and last I knew she was selling real estate up in my neck of the woods (the idea that Washington Heights is now unaffordable just blows my mind, but that's another story)

I don't know how many of you have been following the Lynn Johnston's comic, For Better or For Worse, but there's been an interesting kink in the Wedding of Elizabeth and Anthony storyline in the last few days.

Elizabeth had decided to rush in the wedding preparations, because she wanted her grandfather Jim to be able to witness the wedding.  Only now, on the day of the wedding (which has been going on for the last few weeks), Grampa Jim has had another heart attack.

Here's a link to today's strip: For Better or For Worse (http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/).

Phil has already phoned Liz's mom, Elly, so she too knows what's going on with their dad on this "wonderful" day.

Just a little soap opera, I guess.

So, let's take our own spin on this, as long as we can't find what BK's TOD is:

Have you ever withheld news of something, or has someone withheld news from you, so as to "not spoil" a special occasion or relationship?

Yes, DR SWW, in the summer of 2004 my mother didn't tell me that her brother in Phoenix had died until after we'd been to freshman orientation at the University of Cincinnati with our DS Rob.  Her reasoning was that she didn't want to spoil that experience for us.  However, I also think she waited until it was too late for me to encourage that we go out there together for the funeral.  It was about to begin when she finally told me.

The only withholding of the truth that I've been through was when my sisterthebitch insisted that I never tell Mom and Dad that I'm gay.  She insisted that they would hate me for it, and for a long time I fell for that line.

It later turned out that she was trying to make my being gay a wedge issue between myself and Dad, I firmly believe because she was always bitter that I was born a boy, and therefor priviledged over her as a girl even though she was the older sib.  Gender always has been a bugaboo for her - I hate to think what would have happened if her only child hadn't been a girl.

In any case, Dad has no real problems with my being gay, and is great friends with der B.  But that wedge caused some real communications problems between us for years.  And, given that we Whites usually have long lives (Dad is in his upper eighties, but acts twenty years younger), there's going to be a grudge going on between myself and Sis for quite a long time because of this.

*sigh*

For those who might still not be able to find it, here's the text from page 2:

Quote
Today, I am hoping to have a nicer, better day in which things run smoothly, and everything works the way in which it's supposed to. If not, I shall do violence to both an orange AND a persimmon. Tonight I'm supposed to go see some reading of a new musical in North Hollywood. Otherwise, I'll jog, do some writing, and try to finalize my notes on the Brain contract with Rodgers and Hammerstein, so we can wrap that whole thing up.

Tomorrow, I have no idea what's happening, Thursday I'm seeing Miss Sharon McNight at the Gardenia, and Friday I'm meeting with Mr. Kevin Spirtas.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, go to the bank (if the funds have indeed cleared), do some errands and whatnot, do a little writing and then see a reading of a new musical. Today's topic of discussion: What was the first adult book you read - how old were you, did you read it because you wanted to or was it a school assignment, did you like it, hate it, did it make you want to read more? Let's have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I count the ways that I never want to have another day like yesterday.

I've read for so long that I don't know if I remember my first "adult" book. I remember loving reading and reading above my grade level as far back as 1st or 2nd grade. We had lots and lots of books at home. My father worked as a machinist and he always had a paperback to read at lunch time. He could read a book in two or three days.

Perhaps Idylls of the King was one of the first adult books I read maybe around 5th or 6th grade but I also read Dickens at that point so perhaps it was Dickens. Who can remember that far back! (45 years ago)  ;)

I've written to our web host and we'll see how long it takes them to figure out what happened.  As I said earlier, I couldn't even get to the page to write the notes via AOL last night - first time that's ever happened.  So, I got there via Safari and that seemed to work fine, which is obvious if you do what Elan did and go to the archived version.  But the link is not working with any browser, and I find that really odd - just magically doesn't work after four years of no problems, from yesterday to after midnight.  I think we'd better have some excellent vibes and xylophones for today.

I'm glad she isn't claiming a gluten allergy, as some do.  Allergies and intolerances are very different things, but some intolerant people seem to think that saying "allergy" is the only way to get other people's attention, and get quite huffy if anyone suggests otherwise.  (Yes, I've had customers...  :P)

Correct.  A few months ago they sent me an e-mail saying they were changing ip addresses on their servers.  I called them and asked if there was anything we needed to do and was told no.  Apparently that was an incorrect answer.  The correct answer was yes.  I've e-mailed all this to Bakalor who is nowhere to be found - also left him a message on his cell, so hopefully he'll get that.  It seems all pages are programmed correctly except the Unseemly Button which uses an ip address for some reason.  I'm hoping that the form I use to write the notes and that I can access via Safari but NOT AOL will still work.  Have to check and see if that's an IP or not - I just can't figure out why it wouldn't work via AOL and would with Safari - I've cleared the Safari cache and it still works.

It seems the ONLY page that this site tries to use an ip number is the Unseemly Button link to the second page.  Every other page is coded without the ip, which is the way it has to be.  So, as soon as Bakalor is home, he should be able to fix that easily.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from lunch with my friend, Lisa.  We did indeed dine at Risotteria (http://www.risotteria.com/), and the food was wonderful(!).  We almost went with one of the gluten-free pasta specials - Tuesdays are gluten-free pasta days, but then decided to steer ourselves to the restaurants namesake and ordered risotto.

The first one was their shiitake, green beans and corn risotto, and the second one was composed of shrimp, roasted peppers and spinach.  Truly delicious food.  And their gluten-free breadsticks - which are now quite famous nationally - are still so good that it's hard to believe that they don't contain and wheat flour/gluten.

Of course, I just had to tell them how much I loved Australia - and Melbourne - and the Australian chocolate!  :)

I checked with the bank and the post-dated check did indeed clear today instead of tomorrow, so I've already transfered that into the proper account.  The other check was not Fed Exed last night, but was Fed Exed this morning, so I'll have it in the morning.

bk - Post-dating has no effect on when a check clears.  Any check will start "processing" as soon as you deposit it - especially since post-dating is not kosher.  All that matters to the bank tellers, magnetic number readers and the computer system are the bank's routing number, the account number and the amount.  Yes, some people do post-date checks, but, hopefully, they will tell you if you really should wait to deposit the check until the date on the check, if you get my drift.

While I cooked lunch, I continued with A FEW GOOD MEN on Blu-ray. I had started it some days ago and watched a little more, but the trial part hasn't even begun yet, so there is still much to see. Probably will take me the rest of the week to finish it.

I have had tellers refuse to accept checks for deposit that were post-dated.  I guess the answer to that is to use the ATM for such transactions.  :)

I will say again that the show is SO much more enjoyable to watch, so much richer in all that period decor and design in high definition.

First adult book, if it's considered such, was TREASURE ISLAND. If we're talking about something truly adult, I guess it would be FROM HERE TO ETERNITY which my mother had to sign out for me from the local library because it was in the restricted room which high schoolers weren't allowed to check out from. I guess I was 15 or 16.

Next, I finished LBJ which was so amazing to see the rise and fall so quickly. And so agonizing to live through all of those riots and the escalation of the war once again.

Very well done, but I was glad to be done with it.

To be more precise, my friend has Celiac Disease (http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/) - which is basically a very severe case of gluten intolerance, and is sometimes categorized as an auto-immune disorder.

So, unless she really wants to double over due to gastro-intestinal pains, she really does have to be careful about ingesting any gluten.  Thankfully, she's one of the "sane Celiacs" - there are some truly almost-militant ones out there.  Her gluten intolerance hasn't made her intolerant to other people - or vice versa.  ;)

*And did you know that Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips contain gluten?!?!?!

**Which is the reason why she couldn't have the "Snowy Chocolate" gelato at Cones after our risotto fest.

I believe she has, and, actually I've tried a few of their products myself.  I forget which show I was doing, but there were a couple of gluten-intolerant people in the cast, so the stage managers always made sure to have gluten-free snacks available during rehearsals.  The chocolate chip cookies were OK.  The Chocolate-Chocolate Chip cookies were a different story, and not a good one.  ;)

Sometimes I claim an allergy to something because I want people to quit hounding me to eat something and they won't accept "no thank you" for an answer. For example: when I am trying to lose weight and someone shoves a brownie at me insisting I can have a taste.

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Since I had already devoured all the Sci-Fi and Mystery stuff in the Children's Section of the Public Library, the librarian bent the rules and introduced me to Burroughs - naturally I read the whole series (I was about 11 at the time). First "Adult" book was probably my Mom's copy of Forever Amber.

I'm back from a very strange Fringe show; I didn't like it much although the music was fun. It was rather sophomoric in a campy Yale Drama School fashion: anti-Catholic, men in drag playing lesbians, child abuse, pedophilia, prostitution, and lots of lines like  "a woman has only two things: dreams and a c**t; and only one of them makes money."

I kept wondering why my friends wanted to write music for it.

I hated last year's Fringe show that Lauren and Cason did, and I still think both these pieces made my Favorite Frnge show FOR THE LOVE OF TIFFANY look like MY FAIR LADY.

I can't access the discussions via the second page of notes.

See the post above yours.  I explain this - that's the one thing I hadn't tried (the link here from the second page of notes) and I've alerted Bakalor that he has to fix that one, too, and I'm sure he will by this evening.  BUTT - why has no one saved the discussion board as a favorite???  Of course, if you saved it AFTER using the button on the second page of notes (prior to yesterday) you're going to have to resave it as a favorite - so, once again, you can ALWAYS get to the board by typing in

haineshisway.com/community

Then save it as a favorite.

The Unseemly Button and the link at the bottom of page two's notes were the ONLY problems on the site, as they were never supposed to use an ip address in the link - but somehow they did.  All the other pages on the site and on the board don't, so that's why they work fine.

My first adult book?

That's easy: Mickey Spillaine's I, THE JURY.

When was it published?  The very early 1950s?

Whenever it was, that's when I read it. I guess I was around 12 or 13.

There was 1 sentence in that book that I'll never forget:

"She hooked her thumbs into her panties and pulled them down."

Wow!  For a 12-year-old back in the early 1950s, that was HOT!

I agree. Now whenever I'm traveling and run into delays I think "What would they do on the Amazing Race to get through this mess quickly?"  Believe it or not it has worked more often than not

My problem last night was I had it saved as a favorite, but I did it a long time ago when it still saved as an IP address and not as Haineshisway.com/community

Had to work today, so I missed the Great HHW Lockout of 2008.

Adult book....hmmmmmmmm.....probably Gone With the Wind.  I loved it, and wanted to read all the novels about the Civil War....but then I found From Here to Eternity and I gave up on books written by dames and started looking for books written by GUYS!!!

First Adult Book?  Hmm I have no idea. Everyone in my family reads a lot and always has. My parents never cared what I read or what movies I saw.  I started reading whatever was around the house by the time I was in 4th or 5th grade.  I quit reading "kids" books  by 4th grade.

We are back from our vacation in the sunny southern climes of Oregon.  It was a nice, laid back week with little to do, unlike some of our other yearly holidays, where we've been more than fully booked.  The kids loved riding bikes, swimming, and most especially, the incredible Lava Tubes of Northern California.  If you've never been there, they're truly amazing--hundreds of caves formed from volcanic explosions.  Lots of fun and few if any bats.  ;)

I have been too busy to keep up with posts, so in case this has been mentioned already, apologies, but legendary Brasilian guitarist/composer Dorival Caymmi passed away a couple of days ago at age 94.  Dorival was the pater familias of one of the most accomplished musical families in Brasil--he was Carmen Miranda's Music Director for many years, composed a lot of her hits, and helped popularize the Samba.  His sons Dori and Danilo and daughter Nana are all incredible talents in their own right.  Dori Caymmi is probably the best known to American audiences due to his lovelier than lovely ballad "O Cantador," which was given an American lyric by the Bergmans and morphed into "Like a Lover," one of Brasil '66's most spectacular recordings.

I think I want to buy an external drive to burn CD's/DVD's and use Light Scribe instead of paper labels.

Does any DR have one of these devices - does the drive burn your CD/DVD or do you use your regular drive to burn it and then use the new drive to do the label?  If the later, does it burn BOTH DVD's and CD's?

I have read information on the web, but some of it is confusing.

The Locked Door was an interesting film - even if  the story leans toward the MELODRAMATIC.  But Stanwyck and LaRocque are  good.  And technically, the studios were getting a pretty good handle on what to do with sound.

Rod LaRocque is quite handsome as the rogue who might have raped Stanwyck - and later in the movie has some evil plans for Stanwyck's sister in law (played by MBARNUM fav Betty Bronson).

Everyone's accents are all over the place, and LaRocque has some painted on eyebrows - and a lot of the guys wear some kind of black lipstick - but it's an interesting experiment to see.

Steve will sometimes use Light Scribe when he does the rehearsal CDs for the choruses in Richmond.  The drive will burn the CD as well as the label - in that order.  However...

He's found it faster and easier - and more colorful - to buy those CDs that you can print directly on - if your printer is capable of doing so.

I can see if I can get more information from him if you like.
