Today, August 20, 2008 is my dad's 70th birthday. Happy Birthday to my dad! ;D

I went to my sister's house to discuss what we're doing for his birthday. Tonight, we're all meeting at my sister's house for dessert. She made some vegan chocolate cupcakes...and they are good! :D

This Saturday, we're going to have breakfast at Budd Bay Cafe, on the waterfront in downtown Olympia. Good eatin'. ;D

A very happy haineshisway.com to George's dad.
Thank you very much, BK! And I'm sure that my dad thanks you for the haineshisway.com, also. ;D
-
And now for something COMPLETELY different...when I got home from my sister's house last night, there was some paper stuck to my door. It was a Sex Offender Registration notice! :o
Evidently, a convicted sex offender who "pled guilty to Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree in...Oregon and was sentenced to 8 days which was suspended at the discretion of the probation department...has registered with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office indicating he will be residing in the area...." The details of his case are described and it also says that he is no longer under supervision. Then, several pages of Sex Offender Information and the history of the law are included.
I've never heard of anyone I know getting something like this. :-\
-
I know that I personally don't have much to worry about, but there are quite a few children who live here in the condo complex and in the many apartment buildings on this street...AND only about a quarter mile away from where I live is a high school.

Sounds like the start of a vigilante campaign. In some jurisdictions "watering" a tree in a park (if kids are present) or flicking a girls rump with a towel at a public pool are "registerable" sex offenses. Your neighbors need to worry less about the registered sex-offender down the block and worry more about Uncle Jake - most sex offenses against minors are committed by relatives!

Good morning, all! I slept very poorly and my stomach is in an uproar this morning, so I'm very glad I made the appointment with my doctor.
I've got my notes on both breakins to refresh my memory and at 9:30 I have a meeting with ADA Helen Ahn before the grand jury session . I have no idea how long this will take,
-
Morning all.
Well, I'm in here without problem and I got in last night without problem. Things seem to be back to normal.
Work continues apace. Annie E. Casey nears finish and I have a meeting at 11am. I also have to review a report.
I also must go uptown to the Credit Union. After work I'm visiting with a friend for a while and then I'm meeting a different friend (she's in NYC from DC for business). We're having dinner at Angus McIndoe before she goes to see Gypsy.
-
And I'm the only one here but I won't take us to Page 2. I'll leave that to some other poster.

RE: the olympics.
Interestingly right after i posted about yesterday morning's 100m women's hurdles i went upstairs and noticed they were showing it on NBC. It was interesting because of how different the coverage was on NBC vs CBC (in canada).
Now i get why the focus would be on the favored american athlete (CBC usually features any canadians in the finals and also features the lead contenders). But it was just so odd. It reminded me of the posts that mentioned the cameras only focusing on michael phelps during the award presentation.
It wasn't even exciting watching the canadian athlete because she was not in the screen at all. Not even at the finish.
-
I spy me a Mr. Brockman.
Welcome back. Shalom! Hope you had a good time in Israel.
-
Well, since we're here.
-
Welcome one and all.
-
And more Olympics.
Not sure if anybod here likes triathlon. I'm not even sure how prominently it was shown since i don't believe there were any american contenders.
But here in canada there is a pretty famous triathlete (simon whitfield). And there was a semi-controversy here over him wanting a domestique (someone put in the race only to help him win).
It basically made it a team sport (which is what the Tour de france is about).
They took a guy who is a great swimmer and cyclist but terrible at running (the final event in the triathlon). And this guy (especially in the cycling) would stay at the front of the pack and make sure nobody else got away.
It was very interesting watching this all transpire.
But Simon Whitfield came in 2nd. And the domestique was so happy (he came in last or near the end) that he was jumping up and down at the finish line.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm not watching the Olympics. At least not right now.

Ginger - Pick Yourself Up. Of course, I'd be the one she'd be picking up, as I dance like a moose in winter.

I have had to drop a couple friends over the years because they were just too toxic. It was very difficult for me to let go of them, but I had to do it. To be perfectly fair about this, Spitz had several "golden" chances at cashing in on his unbelievable accomplishment.
That he had no "camera personality" was quite evident. He was and is highly photogenic, but in 1972, he was totally clueless about how to present himself on a camera. His attempts at advertising were woefully wooden.
There was a great deal of resentment of Spitz between 1968 and 1972. He was rather luckluster at the 1968 Mexico City games, and it didn't help that he had boasted he would win six gold medals. (He won two, and both were in team relays). The USOC apparently believed in his potential enough to walk all over other members of the men's swim team in 1972. Things were arranged to accommodate Spitz's ability to swim in the maximum number of events. It was, in fact, the beginning of a change in Olympic sports -- the replacement of the gracious, self-effacing athlete bringing glory to his country and the "I-Me-Mine" athlete stepping up and announcing that everything was about "him".
The Munich games were severely marred, of course, by the terrorist attack on the Israeli team in the men's Olympic village. Many athletes left on their own accord, Spitz included, before the games were suspended.
Michael Phelps, DESPITE the USOC's quest for gold, gold, gold, manages to balance the overly obsessive media attention toward the end results of his athletic endeavors by displaying a genuinely likable personality.
Spitz walked alone in Munich. He arrived, he swam and he left -- alone. Phelps personified teamwork and has been highly vocal about not being able to do anything without the support of same.

-
Oh, yes, I am glad Spitz was able to earn a decent living.
From wikipedia:
In 1972, soon after his return to the U.S., Spitz landed several lucrative corporate endorsement contracts. He earned about $7 million in a two-year period. However, as the memory of his feat receded, so did his endorsement and promotional deals. As his endorsements faded he started a successful real-estate company in Beverly Hills. He bought a Ferrari and says he made more than $1 million. "A million dollars in 1972 would be equivalent to more than $10 million today," Spitz said. "I did very well, thank you very much. I would say I was a pioneer. There wasn't anyone who'd gone to the Olympics before me who capitalized the same way on opportunity. It depends on timing, it depends on hype, it depends on the economy, and most importantly, it depends on looks. I mean, I've never seen a magazine of uglies. That's our society. I'm not saying it's right. That's just the facts."
Dear, dear Mark Spitz. As ingratiating as ever! ;)

Back from grand jury. There's always one, if not more, on every panel I've been on. My testimony was about discovering the break-in, calling 911, and what was stolen, the officer who found the bloodsample on the battered-in door spoke about that, the crime lab technician spoke about matching up the DNA, and an idiot woman's question was, he could be innocent; what if he was simply waling in the hall?
Oy!

From the USOC website:
Amateurism in the modern Olympic Games
Until the 1970s, Olympic athletes could not accept endorsements or prizes, and professionals were not allowed to compete in the Games. Athletes who practiced professionally were considered to have an unfair advantage over those who played sports as a hobby. Amateur athletes relied on private sponsorship, such as family members and wealthy fans, to fund their training and pay living expenses.
Professionals in the Games
The International Olympic Committee eliminated the necessity of amateurism in 1971, allowing athletes to receive compensation for time away from work during training and competition. In addition, athletes were permitted to receive sponsorship from national organizations, sports organizations, and private businesses for the first time. In 1986, professional athletes were given permission by the International Federation to compete in each sport of the Olympic Games. For instance, in the 1992 Olympic Games, the United States was allowed to field a basketball team comprised of well-paid NBA stars, called "The Dream Team."
Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act
Although the IOC allowed for athlete compensation in 1971, all U.S. athletes still had to be of amateur status to compete on the United States Olympic team until 1978. Athletes from the United States found it difficult to compete at the Olympic Games against athletes from eastern nations who were sponsored by their governments and able to train full-time. In 1978, the United States adopted the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, allowing athletes on the U.S. Olympic team to receive financial awards, sponsorship, and payments for the first time. A revision of the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act in 1998 expanded athletic eligibility and representation further to include the Paralympics Games and increased athlete representation.

At this point, it doesn't much matter who he picks or how he announces it.

My question for Question Day. This is for Cillaliz.
Please explain the tenses of "to plea."
[pedantic mode ON]
Can't do it. "Plea" is a noun, and hence has no tense. The verb "plead," on the other hand...
[pedantic mode OFF]
Now, if you want to get involved in the "pled" vs. "plead" (pronounced "pled") vs. "pleaded" discussion, that's another story. Hie thee to your local copy of the OED, if you so desire.
(as an aside, anybody interested in the kind of minutiae that the OED specializes in MUST read "The Professor and the Madman")
-
My apologies for butting in there... language pedantry is something I delight in, although I try not be get too annoying with it. (And yes, I used a preposition to end a clause with in the last sentence... and this one, too! :))
-
I'm not sure I'm explaining it correctly but he had already pleaded guilty; the grand jury was a formality. DR cillaliz can explain it much better than I ever could.
Well, you have to be charged before you can formally plead guilty and a grand jury is a proceeding where you are formally charged. My guess is they worked out a pre-indictment plea agreement and it will be formally entered now that he has been charged. Just my guess. That happens some places. Here we would waive the grand jury if we worked out a deal. That may not be the way it works in New York
-
That's the kind of thing I wanted to know, Elan. Thanks.
-
My question for Question Day. This is for Cillaliz.

Well, I'm back from my midday meeting with the volunteer administrators and using my old computer. The folks in IT tell me that it's on its last legs and will probably be replaced tomorrow.
-
So, Elan, it would be:
"How do you plead?"
or
"What is your plea?"
What is the past tense of plead?
"He plead (pled) guilty."
or
"He pleaded" guilty."
-
My dancing partner would have to be one of those Bollywood hunks I hear tell about.

In my years as a court reporter, I couldn't correct what people said, and I have always wondered about plea/plead.
-
So, Elan, it would be:
"How do you plead?"
or
"What is your plea?"
What is the past tense of plead?
"He plead (pled) guilty."
or
"He pleaded" guilty."
Both "How do you plead?" and "What is your plea?" are correct.
"He pleaded guilty" is unquestionably correct
"He pled guilty" is long-standing colloquially correct usage, particularly in speech (aural analogue to "bleed/bled" & "feed/fed" )
"plead" as a past tense form looks and sounds plausible (analogous to "read"), but I'd need to check the OED to see if it has a legitimate basis.

Thanks to all for the vibes and xylophones - they are much appreciated. It's been a really difficult week, and hopefully the difficult part is over.
-
Sounds like the start of a vigilante campaign. In some jurisdictions "watering" a tree in a park (if kids are present) or flicking a girls rump with a towel at a public pool are "registerable" sex offenses. Your neighbors need to worry less about the registered sex-offender down the block and worry more about Uncle Jake - most sex offenses against minors are committed by relatives!
der Brucer
True...the synopsis says that he abused his 9-year-old stepsister and a 6-year-old neighbor girl when he was 16. He's 26 now. It was 10 years ago and he "was sentenced to 8 days which was suspended" but it also says "his previous criminal history places him in a classification level that reflects the potential to re-offend." I know that they're just being careful but I this could possibly create more of an issue than necessary. :-\

DR George - Was the packet placed on your door by the local authorities, county police, etc.? Or does it look like someone made it up on their own?
I don't know who put it on my door, but it's basically four double-sided pages of information, mainly about the laws. His information is only one side of one page. It doesn't look like someone did this on their own...and there's a local phone number to call a detective leieutenant.
-
Awaiting word about whether the CDs will show up today, although I'd say it's looking doubtful. That means tomorrow will be a REALLY busy day. But, you never know, they could show and that would actually be a very good thing.
-
Perhaps BK, this will make you feel better.

Hmm.... OK. I wonder if that is what is required under the Oregon state laws in regards to sex offender registration. Some localities put their faces on a database and/or on cable TV, I guess good old-fashioned leafletting is still in place in some areas.
-
Thanks Singdaw and JRand for the birthday wishes for my dad! ;D
Awwwwww, DR George, I meant to do the same before I left this morning! I hope he has a great day. I still miss my dad. Every day.
-
Nor should you. It's counter-productive.
Especially since he/you/bk is not eating enough food at the proper times in order to fuel his muscles - and brain - properly.
-
Ooh, Ooh, Barnum, I'll take the one in the orange jacket, even though he's got a bit too much bling.
Oh, wait, I can't. I'm married (in every way but the eyes of the law). Oh, well, I'll just look ;)
-
It sure feels like I'm eating plenty of food. Not yesterday, but most days.
-
I wonder what I shall eat today. I really have no appetite right now.
-
Well, choose your partner DR Singdaw, it is time to fill up 'yer dance card!
Me suspects that if DR MBarnum was ever presented with that "dance card", he would end up with a good case of the vapors, giggle like a school girl and faint.
;)
-

But isn't Anthony on the road right now?
:P

Some book reviews on amazon would probably cheer me up, as I'm a whore for that sort of thing.
-
I wish one of those morons on AS THE WORLD TURNS would get on a computer and Google "homosexual philanthropic foundation" and then read the 9,800 results before beginning a story line that looks like it will become CUTE GAY BOYS AND THE AGING CLOSET QUEENS THAT LOVE THEM! Perhaps Dr Phil will be brought on for advice?
So, I think I will step down to the pharmacy on the corner.
-
Some book reviews on amazon would probably cheer me up, as I'm a whore for that sort of thing.
I just posted a good review for THE LAST STARFIGHTER! ;)
-
Oooh!! I just got the "cast list" for today's segment of The Battery's Down (http://thebatterysdown.com/) that I'll be taping later on this afternoon, and it looks like we may have a Guest STAR or two in attendance. :)
-
Folks, I had some news to post yesterday, which unfortunately I was unable to deliver.
Jane asked me to tell you all that her beloved mother-in-law, Keith's mother Millie passed away. She had rallied over the weekend, but has succumbed. Funeral is Friday. She was the best mother-in-law our Jane could have hoped for, and they are devastated by the loss, as you may imagine.
Jane and Keith had company visiting from England, and couldn't leave immediately - but by now are on their way down, having delivered Sherlock to the groomers, who will spoil him rotten during his parents' absence.
that is all - sorry to be the bearer of such sad news...
-
Thanks for sharing that news, DR Penny O.
~~~~~Vibes and Condolences to Jane, Keith and the rest of their family~~~~~
-
The Last Starfighter (the film) was an answer (question?) on last night's Teen Jeopardy tournament.
-
I am so sorry to hear about Keith's mom/Jane's Mother in law :-\
-
Also sorry to hear about Keith's mom.
-
Condolences to Keith and Jane.
-
Condolences to Keith & Jane. May your fond memories of Millie grow stronger and the pain of your loss grow dimmer as time goes on.
-
With great sadness...
***VIBES OF COMFORT & TRAVELING VIBES***
for DR Jane and DH Keith
on their great loss
-
Virtual hugs and vibes to Jane and Keith.
-
Awwwwww, DR George, I meant to do the same before I left this morning! I hope he has a great day. I still miss my dad. Every day.
Thank you very much, Larry. :-*
-
~~~Vibes of Comfort for DR Jane and DH Keith!!~~~
-
Hmm... They just cancelled the taping due to some last-minute scheduling conflicts... Ah, well... Now to figure out what I want to do with my free evening.
-
(And yes, I used a preposition to end a clause with in the last sentence... and this one, too! :))
But, I didn't pay to read your words - although that doesn't keep me from annoying commentary. Internal clauses ending in prepositions grate less harshly than sentence enders!
der Brucer
-
Dearest DR PennyO, thanks for relaying the news about Keith's mother. I send my love and hugs to my Nursie and my deepest sympathy to Keith.
-
Well, you have to be charged before you can formally plead guilty and a grand jury is a proceeding where you are formally charged. My guess is they worked out a pre-indictment plea agreement and it will be formally entered now that he has been charged. Just my guess. That happens some places. Here we would waive the grand jury if we worked out a deal. That may not be the way it works in New York
Actually, DR cillaliz, I believe that's what the ADA told me and I was incapable of relaying it. I got the impression this was all a formality to avoid potential problems down the pike.
-
Hugs and prayers to Jane and Keith.
-
And also to Elmore.
-
Deepest sympathies to DR Jane and her DH Keith.
-
*And does anyone have Danise's phone number, just to check in on her? -I though I had it in my phone, but I don't, and, normally, it would be Jane who would touch base with her.
-
Well, I'm off to Union Square to meet up with a friend who just called who needs some cheering up... Must be something in the air...
Laters..
-
And also to Elmore.
Awwwwwwwwww!!!! Shucks.
-
Sorry to hear of DR Jane's bad news.
-
I usually watch something for fun while I cook and eat lunch, but I went ahead and started up REAGAN which I had watched 25 minutes of last night. I had NO idea it would take all afternoon to get through the rest of the set. I figured I'd have at least half an hour to an hour left to go on to GEORGE H.W. BUSH, but I actually ran 8 minutes past my usual afternoon cutoff point so I could finish.
-
My goodness, I had forgotten all about Iran-Contra and about the stock market crash. Amazing how much history these DVDs have brought back to memory.
-
I have GEORGE H.W. BUSH all cued up and ready to play when I go back down. There are bonuses on the disc, so I'm just hoping I can put the set behind me by the end of the evening.
-
Sympathies to Keith, Jane and family on the loss of his mother.
You are all in my prayers.
-
I took dear reader Jeanne's advice and took a jacuzzi - it was nice. Going to dinner tonight with Mr. Barry Pearl.
-
I'm heading down now to give optimum amount of time for the last disc in the PRESIDENTS box. I have enjoyed the shows immensely, but I will be glad to see them come to an end.
-
Spoo!
WBBL.
-
Sympathies to DR Jane, her DH Keith and their extended family.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone? I'm doing stuff on the computer and listening to Ye Olde iPod.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Well, first it was Clay Aiken, and now, Ricky Martin (http://www.comcast.net/articles/music/20080820/People.Ricky.Martin/).
-
It was a post.
;)
-
I can say that I just weighed myself after a few days and have lost three more pounds - for a total of thirteen since I started weighing myself (I might have lost a couple before I started weighing myself). So, that's nice. I'm now at my third all-time highest weight - however, the last time I weighed what I do now was back in 1993. So, I'm on the right road, diet-wise.
-
Dixie and I have returned from our run around the cemetery; she ate her dinner while I ate a fresh FIG!
-
Scent Of Mystery will be delivered tomorrow morning - I have to be here when it's delivered, so that may impact my breakfast with Lauren. I also have to get them stamped and shipped, which all takes quite a bit of time - although when I stamp them here it's no wait time at the post office - I just dump them there.

Ooo! This is exciting! :D

Mr. Pearl and I are going to Little Toni's this evening. I haven't eaten anything today, so I can have a nice dinner.

T.O.D.
Ask BK Day!
Can you give us any updates on who may be appearing at the Bacharach Gala in December? Any chance that the wonderful Dionne Warwick (a supporter of Bacharach and AIDS Fundraising) might join the event?

My deepest sympathies to DR Jane, DH Keith, and their entire family on the passing of Keith's mother.

I should have a list on Friday night, but the ones I know for sure are Liz Callaway, Jason Graae, Linda Purl, Kevin Spirtas, some kid who's in the current cast of Spring Awakening, and several soap opera people. We're just starting to approach the bigger names and we're definitely hoping to get a few.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page seven.
-
I'm really tired. This is one of the few days that is going slowwwwwly.
-
I, too, adore THE TIME MACHINE. It was mesmerizing to a kid in the theaters in 1960, and I saw it several times. The Morlocks always scared me to death, and the special effects for the time were very impressive. Even simple things like the books that crumbled into dust and the spinning information rings, just fabulous. And all the time lapse photography was one of the things I went back to the movie to see. Just loved seeing those clothes on that mannequin changing over time.
It's ironic that two of my all-time favorite movies are about time travel - TIME AFTER TIME and THE TIME MACHINE. I saw THE TIME MACHINE for the first time in a theater down in Redondo Beach, California. I had actually hoped to see the movie 13 GHOSTS down in Redondo; because Rosemary De Camp lived down at the corner from the friends we were staying with on our vacation, and for some reason I thought it would be really cool to see the movie just a few blocks from her house. Unfortunately, 13 GHOSTS had already left that theater, so we saw THE TIME MACHINE instead.
However, I fell madly in love with THE TIME MACHINE (and Rod Taylor). I can still sit through that film a few dozen times and never grow tired of the it. And the score is beautiful.
-
And that wonderful Russell Garcia score really establishes a mood for the entire film.
I should have known that Ron would know who composed the score.
-
Gene Kelly. But of course he would have to teach me.
...................And after that, he could teach you to dance.
-
Yes, the Garcia score (available on CD) is fantastic. I would also add to the time travel movies I'm fond of, Somewhere In Time. I got rid of my DVD, unfortunately, as I feel like watching it now. But, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, both DVD incarnations are not anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. Given the film's incredibly loyal following, you'd think Universal would do the right thing.
-
Somehow I have never managed to catch up with THE TIME MACHINE. Someday.
Who else but MBarnum could say that line with a straight face?
-
No chance of getting Donny Osmond for the show?
-
Obama is going to announce his running mate by text message? So that's how he will get access to cell phone numbers in order to do campaign calls and get past the "Do not call" bit about cell phone numbers?
Not to me. He is sending me an e-mail.
-
Have to figure out where Donny is these days.

I love "Time After Time" but should I be embarrased to say that I've never seen "The Time Machine" all the way through? :-\

Yup...I'm still here.
-
Have to figure out where Donny is these days.
Donny and Marie will be starting a new long-term gig at The Flamingo Hotel in Lost Wages. They are taking over the theater previously housing the Toni Braxton show.
-
Ben! The one in orange! You sly dog, you!
-
MBarnum, do any of these gentlemen (this one in particular) speak any English?
They all speak English very well...most educated Indians do...usually with a British accent.
-
TCB...does it really matter??
;D
Well, I suppose not. But I would prefer that he, at least, know what the word again means.
-
George, birthday wishes to your dear father!
-
They all speak English very well...most educated Indians do...usually with a British accent.
Actually Michael, I know that about Indian men, but I was not sure, just from the photos, where all of these gentlmen were from. Do you have a phone number handy for my favorite?
-
Did I ever mention that there is quite the problem with the casting couch for Bollywood actors?
On a completely unrelated note, TD and I are in the process now of opening our own talent agency in Mumbai.
-
Actually Michael, I know that about Indian men, but I was not sure, just from the photos, where all of these gentlmen were from. Do you have a phone number handy for my favorite?
Oh, yes all those actors pictured are Indian.
And would you believe I do happen to have that gentleman's wife's phone number.
Oh, and he was just in NYC at that event that DR Jose mentioned the other day.
-
Actually Michael, I know that about Indian men, but I was not sure, just from the photos, where all of these gentlmen were from. Do you have a phone number handy for my favorite?
That statement sounded weird. However, I did meet a Pakistani man who looked a lot like one of those men, and he spoke very little English. He did know the word, again, however.
-
Oh, yes all those actors pictured are Indian.

What is his name?

So, my signing/reading can be either September 13 or October 4. Which sounds best?

Did I ever mention that there is quite the problem with the casting couch for Bollywood actors?
Seriously?

Well, they open September 9.

No chance of getting Donny Osmond for the show?
DONNY OSMOND AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
That's what we used to do in 4th grade, yell DONNY OSMOND and then scream. I really don't know why. It isn't like he was there or anything. It was just something we did.
-
You could always print the photo and add it to your collection ;)

When I was in the 4th grade, Donny wasn't.
-
His collection?
Photo collection...he and Ant have quite the collection....that's all I'm saying :-X
-
When I was in the 4th grade, Donny wasn't.
He's only a year or two older than I am. This would have been in his "Puppy Love" days
-
When I was in the 4th grade, Donny wasn't.
Well, I guess he was, he just wasn't performing yet.

DONNY OSMOND!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!
That's kind of fun...maybe that's why we did it.

DR Laura, have you been to http://dev.donny.com/ ? It's his new website
-
George, birthday wishes to your dear father!
Birthday wishes for DR George's father!
Thanks and thanks! ;D
-
BRENT BARRETT! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
-
DRsLaura and Sandra bought me a crushed angel food cake. Horrors! Luckily I solved the problem quickly since I was FORCED to eat that portion right away. :P ;) :D
-
Actually he's 4 years older than I am...
That would make you, Cilla, 11 years younger than me. So, when I was in fourth grade, you weren't.
-
BRENT BARRETT! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
LOL, Kind of fun isn't it ;D
I actually have never been a Donny Osmond fan, I just used to enjoy yelling his name and screaming...

I don't think I was really a fan of Donny Osmond until I saw him half-naked in JOSEPH.
-
The other girls were big fans of David Cassidy. I had to hide my love for Donny Osmond.
-
Stupid me. I think I convinced my DH to come with me to the conference. Now I have to get him to NOT want to come, just so I can detour through Las Vegas.
-
MBarnum, do any of these gentlemen (this one in particular) speak any English?
They speak "Our Language of Love."
Ah, an IRMA LA DOUCE reference!
-
The other girls were big fans of David Cassidy. I had to hide my love for Donny Osmond.
OH We used to go DAVID CASSIDY AHHHHHH! Too. We must have been very obnoxious on the playground, ::)

ROTFLMAO! ;D

Just shout, "ENCORE!"

Stupid me. I think I convinced my DH to come with me to the conference. Now I have to get him to NOT want to come, just so I can detour through Las Vegas.
Maybe you could tell him you hear there is the most amazing casino carpet and you HAVE to get a picture of it...and it just happens to be at the same casino where DO is playing
-
I'm heading for bed. I think I got abot 4-5 hours sleep last night and I'm tired. I'm reading Anna Russell's autobiography, which I should have finished by the time my copy of the Hoffstetter #2 MURDER AT THE GROVE gets to me.
It's also getting time for PROJECT RUNWAY and then SORDID LIVES at 10. By that time I should be comatose.
-
. . .with offices soon to open in Dubai as well. 8)
I think I would really like to visit Dubai.
-
I think I would really like to visit Dubai.
You could be my right-hand man; or my left-hand man if you prefer. ;)
-
Maybe I'll tell him that several of his cousins are looking forward to seeing him at the conference. That should do it.
-
I have been very tired. Last night I had a wonderful bowl of butter brickle ice cream. This morning I found the carton in the refrigerator. Oh Pooh! I don't even remember putting it there.
-
I'm ready for the Olympics to be over so I can get some sleep!
-
You could be my right-hand man; or my left-hand man if you prefer. ;)
What's wrong with the middle?
-
Thanks for the "gallery," DR MBarnum! :)
-
His collection?
You hadda be there ;D
Anyone who has been in our apartment and used a certain facility knows to what Miss Cilla is referring.
-
Happy Birthday to George's father
And my father thanks you!
-
Good Evening!
Hmmm... So, to cheer up my friend, Michael - who really has had a bad string of days lately - I "enabled" him to Artichoke & Basile's for a slice of their Artichoke Pizza - as well as a slice of their Crabmeat Pizza. YUMMY!
*And to make sure he was totally cheered up, we then headed to Dessert Club, ChickaLicious (http://)** for a S'Mores Cupcake - Brown Sugar Cupcake filled with Chocolate Ganache and topped with Toasted Homemade Marshmallow "Icing". -And, yes, a picture will be forthcoming. :)
**Which is across the street from it's "mother" ChikaLicious (http://www.chikalicious.com/), the original Desserts Only Restaurant in NYC.
-
I hope your dad had a swell birthday, DR George!
-
They all speak English very well...most educated Indians do...usually with a British accent.
So, does that make them cunning linguists?
-
I wish someone would bring me a cake. Cake is the great elixir.
-
I was a fan of Davy Jones of the Monkees
...And after he kissed you, did you proclaim never to wash your cheek again?
;)
-
Perhaps I'll have spaghetti and meatballs this very evening. Or, maybe some baked pasta - I've never had baked pasta and it always looks good to me.
-
I hope your dad had a swell birthday, DR George!
Thanks, Laura! My parents went to dinner at a restaurant and then we're all meeting at my sister's for dessert. SOON! I need to leave!
Have a good rest of the evening, all!
-
What's wrong with the middle?
I didn't think you'd want to share. . .
-
So, does that make them cunning linguists?
Mr. S.! The WAY you talk! ! !
-
Perhaps I'll have spaghetti and meatballs this very evening. Or, maybe some baked pasta - I've never had baked pasta and it always looks good to me.
Really? No baked spaghetti? No baked ziti? No lasagna?
-
Mr. S.! The WAY you talk! ! !
Yes, it's the WAY I talk.
;D
-
As for tonight's "Project Runway"....
HAAAAAA!!!! I know some of these "models"!
;D
-
I took dear reader Jeanne's advice and took a jacuzzi - it was nice.
Well, that's a first!! ;)
-
I have been very tired. Last night I had a wonderful bowl of butter brickle ice cream. This morning I found the carton in the refrigerator. Oh Pooh! I don't even remember putting it there.
Are you certain you don't have "guests"?
-
I'm ready for the Olympics to be over so I can get some sleep!
Me, too, DR Cillaliz! Even though I knew how it turned out, I had to stay up last night to see Shawn Johnson, which wasn't on here until after 11. Tonight I'm aiming to go to bed closer to 10, so I'll sign off now.
'night!

Jose really knows how to cheer someone up. Is there a low-cal/low-fat variety or do you feel so good that you don't care about the extra pounds?
-
On a somber note, condolences to JANE and KEITH.
-
I've had lasagna - my ex-wife made it quite often.
-
Jose really knows how to cheer someone up. Is there a low-cal/low-fat variety or do you feel so good that you don't care about the extra pounds?
My friend actually felt like "splurging", so I was only fulfilling his wishes. ;)
*However, there are some low-cal/low-fat options on the "Cheer Up" list if one should ever desire those. 8)
-
Jose really knows how to cheer someone up. Is there a low-cal/low-fat variety or do you feel so good that you don't care about the extra pounds?
And I should point out that the picture I posted of the S'Mores cupcake is actually larger than the actually cupcake. So it was just decadent enough. :)
-
...Well, now that I look at it, maybe the pic is not that much larger than the real thing. Angles, ya' know.

Oh, and here is the pizza in question from Artichoke Basile...

As a friend of mine was fond of saying, "As long as they can grunt or moan, it doesn't matter."
I, of course, would NEVER say such a thing.

Maybe I'll have a pizza tonight? Or a meatball sub. Or baked pasta. I'm really hungry and I seem to have my appetite back.
-
I shall shortly be on my way to sup, after which I shall return. I am starting to feel better and I promise to try to be back to normal by tomorrow.
-
I am hoping the chinchy bassas will be gone tomorrow, BK.
-
As for tonight's "Project Runway"....
HAAAAAA!!!! I know some of these "models"!
;D
So do I!
A friend of mine is the emcee for a fundraising drag pageant every year and Annida Grenkard and Farrah Moans are always in the show. I don't know Hedda personally but I've seen enough of her shows to feel like I know her.
-
Jose, last night on the local news there was a story about rising food prices and one of the owners interviewed was an Upper West Side store which features baked goods. It was called
LEVAIN
The owner is worried that she may have to raise her prices yet again due to the cost of raw ingredients.
-
Today, August 20, 2008 is my dad's 70th birthday. Happy Birthday to my dad! ;D
Happy Birthday to George's father! I hope he has a great day...
-
Good evening one and all!

There are also rumors that Magnolia may be following suit too.

It is very sad when someone you consider a friend doesn't come through for you. Always disappointing, and I'm sure most of us have suffered the same kind of disappointment with this.
It truly is disappointing... and a bit disheartening
-
Best wishes to DR DAKOTACELT on her engagement.
-
Vibes of sympathy to DR JANE and KEITH.
-
Now you tell me, DR JMK.
DR JOSE - I was just afraid a printer with ink cartridges that had to be replaced and replaced and REPLACED would be too troublesome. So I did buy a nice $85 system with Light Scribe. You do have to buy special disks, and it takes some time, and as DR JMK says the printing is VERY LIGHT - but I have it and it works.
-
Somehow though installing the software messed up my computer and now I can't change my Desktop photo or settings....crazy.
-
I love THE TIME MACHINE...and yes the sound mix on the DVD is great. I also like TIME AFTER TIME, which we went to the movies and saw FIVE times the week it opened, and then another three or four times when it moved to the drive in.
And SOMEWHERE IN TIME - and MR BK is correct, the DVD is NOT anamorphic.
-
Scary enough for ya?

Ron, I also found Phelps rather modest concerning his accomplishments compared to others in the past.
-
Never "say", or never "did"?
My lips are sealed!

DR JRand - I guess it all depends how many CDs and DVDs you burn and label on a regular basis, and it sounds like you're quite "regular" in that regard. ;)
-
Vibes and sympathies to all who ned them! You are dear, dear friends.

I am hoping the chinchy bassas will be gone tomorrow, BK.
Any of them saxy --like the lieutellan?
-
Hmmmm....the Amazon.com link for the Walt Disney Treasures, the Mickey Mouse Club presents Annette - isn't working. You get taken to a Donald Duck DVD, and I can't find it with a search. Even when I click the link from my Pre Order page, I get Donald Duck.....strange............

True, but I won't need to LABEL each of them. I got it especially for when I make special CD's of Photographs from a Show or collections for friends of WOW.... 8)

Thank you for the information PennyO
My condolences to Jane, Keith and their family of their beloved Millie.
I send a hug!

support vibes to Elmore....

Gives me the creeps even today.
-
It does, doesn't it? We were hiding our eyes in the theater....the music, the lighting....those creepy things....whew!
-
I was SO delighted to finish my PRESIDENTS box set. Enjoyed all of them, but I've had enough history to last a few months! Thankfully, the two bonuses on the Bush DVD weren't very long. One was 15 minutes and the other lasted about 2. The last one showed him parachuting at age 83. Good lord!
-
Another question for ASK BK day....since we are on the subject of time travel.
Which "star of the day" - do you think could come through the time machine to right now - and have talent enough to still be a star today?
-
Judy comes to mind.....for me.
-
It does, doesn't it? We were hiding our eyes in the theater....the music, the lighting....those creepy things....whew!
When Taylor was trying to get back into the machine and they were all over him, I was almost nauseous in my seat from fear. I remember vividly to this day screaming when he went into the future and that knocked out Morlock started decomposing.
-
DONNY OSMOND AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
That's what we used to do in 4th grade, yell DONNY OSMOND and then scream. I really don't know why. It isn't like he was there or anything. It was just something we did.
I dont mind Donny, I just could not get into him when I was a kid....
I am more of a Jon Bon Jovi, Elton John, Micheal Buble fan...
Bk mentioned soap actors.... I am intrigued.
-
Judy for sure and Tyrone Power, I think. Also Monty Clift would be doing the stuff Sean Penn gets now.
-
What is his name?
TCB, his name is Abhishek Bachchan. His father was a top star in the 70s and 80s.
Abhishek has made some really good films.

The other girls were big fans of David Cassidy. I had to hide my love for Donny Osmond.
I was relatively on the young side when they were big. I only saw David Cassidy in reruns and thought he was okay.
By the time I was into the pre-teen crushes on stars they were out of the scene. I do remember Shaun Cassidy was big.
Disco was going and Abba was big...
Then it was the 80s....
-
Next, I watched THE LOCKED DOOR (or was it THE LOCKED ROOM). Anyway, a very stagy film and everyone self conscious about the microphones and "acting." But nice to finally see and hear Rod La Rocque. No question about his being a member of the committee.
-
Thank you JRand...
-
I zipped through AS THE WORLD TURNS. Noah again made me furious. And the new man is definitely hiding something.

Oh dear..... That looks SOOOOOOOOO good!!!!!
-
OK... Me sleepy already ( ??? ), so...
Goodnight.
-
Bon JOvi and Abba are my guilty pleasures in music....
-
::::: hangs head in shame ::::
My childhood [pre-teen and early teen years] crushes were on Henry Winkler, John STamos, Patrick Swayze, and Lane Davies.....
this was before I discovered Matt Ashford, Harrison Ford and other actors...

That's what I thought, too - but I'm not going to be the one to tell Vilma. ;D
-
But it's so EARLY, DR JOSE
-
Darn...now I think I have to watch THE TIME MACHINE on DVD. I don't think I have watched the misguided remake all the way through...well I know I haven't.
-
Then I watched PROJECT RUNWAY. I did love the winner's outfit and agreed with the decision. (I didn't like the kimono). I also agreed that it was time for the loser to go.
And weren't those "girls" surprising as men? Great to see them both ways.
-
That's what I thought, too - but I'm not going to be the one to tell Vilma. ;D
I have a strong feeling she knew ahead of time!

Unless I get the Blu-ray of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I guess tomorrow I'll be watching (for the first time) Passolini's SALO. I can't say that I'm looking forward to it. His movies of the 1970s seemed to push the perversity button just for the sake of being outrageous, and from everything I've ever read about this, his last film, it's no different.
-
Heading down to bed now.
Good night!
-
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%][size=10]12[/size][/move]
-
And now I'm REALLY going!
;D
-
...And after he kissed you, did you proclaim never to wash your cheek again?
;)
I never met him, just dreamed about him from afar ;D
-
Are you certain you don't have "guests"?
Quite sure. That wasn't the only thing I did without thinking yesterday. It was a combination of over multi tasking and just being too tired. Today was much better
-
Me, too, DR Cillaliz! Even though I knew how it turned out, I had to stay up last night to see Shawn Johnson, which wasn't on here until after 11. Tonight I'm aiming to go to bed closer to 10, so I'll sign off now.
'night!
I planned to go to bed around 10:00 but since it's 11:30, guess that isn't going to happen
-
And I should point out that the picture I posted of the S'Mores cupcake is actually larger than the actually cupcake. So it was just decadent enough. :)
If it's a really small cupcake, I think I'd need two just to make sure I was really cheered up ;D

To be frank, I am a staunch admirer of SALO. I recently watched a handmade dvd (uncut and anamorphic) which was in Italian without subtitles and still found it to be a mesmerizing excursion into the realm of De Sade. Truthfully, there is one scene which I find repulsive, but I feel that had any hack director made this same film, there would not have, and still be, such controversy surrounding it. Pasolini was well-known stateside for his Saint Matthew epic and to a lesser degree for his trio of Medieval Tales. The Tales Triology has some darkness, but are mostly light-hearted romps populated by a beautiful bevy of youths of both genders.
SALO turns these literary tales inside out; the youths are still there and beautiful, but the darkness of fascism and the literary pedigree puts a dander on any fun and frivolity.
SALO is, to me, a very interesting film, but definitely not one I revisit more than once a year.
I'll be very interested in reading your thoughts on the film AND on the Criterion release.

I've got to get some sleep...night all

Another question for ASK BK day....since we are on the subject of time travel.
Which "star of the day" - do you think could come through the time machine to right now - and have talent enough to still be a star today?
Any of the greats - three that come to mind are Cary Grant, James Stewart, and James Mason.

Back from a very nice and very supportive dinner with Barry Pearl. We spoke of many things and it was good to have someone to chat with. I am feeling better today, and the dinner helped make that even moreso. We shared a pizza (three pieces each - very thin crust and not too big, slice-wise) and we shared a chopped salad, which was excellent. I probably had a little too much dressing, but tonight was my splurge night, obviously, and given the amount I've been running and how good I've been all this week, I think I'll be just fine.
-
Nobody here but us chickens and us chickens is FULL.
-
Now I REALLY need to go to sleep.
-
I have a strong feeling she knew ahead of time!
I thought la mem chose.

DR CILLA LIZ is now my Facebook friend!
-
Friends make everything better.
-
Maybe I'll have a pizza tonight? Or a meatball sub. Or baked pasta. I'm really hungry and I seem to have my appetite back.
I went to my sister's to celebrate my dad's birthday today (I printed out your birthday wishes for him and he was surprised and appreciative! ;D). Among other things, he LOVES the gift cards to Barnes & Noble that we always get him. :) Anyway, afterwards, I went to Subway (we only had dessert at my sister's and I hadn't eaten real food, yet) and got the meatball sub. It was more meatball pieces than actual meatballs, but it was very good. :D
-
Happy Birthday to George's father! I hope he has a great day...
Thanks! He did!
-
I've had the Subway meat ball sub and it's not bad. Best around here is Quickie's - really tasty. Little Toni's is very erratic, but tonight's pizza was just terrific.
-
Welcome six GUESTS. New notes coming right now.
