Title: BEGIN THE BEGUINE
Post by: bk on August 23, 2008, 12:15:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes began the beguine, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've begun the beguine and have no idea when they'll be home.

I'd write Happy Birthday to that guy that used to post but as he won't read this I won't bother.

This is a photo of no significance whatsoever as a Birthday related photo would not be seen.

Last night, after I got home from work, I decided to look for a videotape that a friend of mine (Chris...TCB knows and has done shows with him!) wanted a copy of.  I was in my garage for a couple of hours and went through just about every box in my garage (for the first time in the more than the year and a half that I've lived here) and I actually found it!  Now, I can make a DVD of the video for Chris and for me!  I also found some other videotapes that I'd like to copy to DVD.

I also found several (but not all :-\) of my Tony Award videotapes.  I started taping in 1990 and I'm missing 1991 (I don't think I actually recorded this in the first place), 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003 and the first half of 2004. :(

I also found (and am watching right now) my autographed DVD of BK's "Deceit." :)

TOD - I like all of these performers, maybe Jack Lemmon not so much, but that is probably just his screen persona....

Natalie Wood - Gypsy, Rebel Without a Cause, Cash McCall, Marjorie Morningstar

Tony Curtis - Sweet Smell of Success, Johnny Dark, Some Like it Hot

Jack Lemmon - Good Neighbor Sam, Bell Book and Candle

I know I haven’t been around for ages, but I’ve been very busy at work, which is a good thing. But when you allow yourself to get behind on Bruce’s notes, it’s a very dangerous thing because then you have a lot of catch-up work to do and it’s a very different experience when you read a month’s worth of daily notes in one sitting. Bruce’s life takes on an entirely different quality and the days just go whizzing by like a gazelle who’s late for a soap opera audition. I mean I found myself calling Mark just to say, “Hey, Bruce is up to jogging 3 ½ miles!” To which Mark replied, “what day are you on?” My reply: “I’m still five days behind.” Mark’s reply: “Well, keep reading. He’s up to 4 ½ miles.” My god, he’s gone mad! Actually, what impressed me most was that Bruce kept jogging even while he was in New York. Whenever Mark and I go out of town, all diets and exercise regimens go flying out the window, like a gazelle flying out a window.

I asked Mark if it would be very bad form to answer old questions and he said you all wouldn’t mind. So here goes:

Tony Curtis - SOME LIKE IT HOT, HOUDINI, THE GREAT RACE, SPARTACUS, THE DEFIANT ONES.

Jack Lemmon - THE APARTMENT, IRMA LA DOUCE, AVANTI!, SOME LIKE IT HOT, THAT'S LIFE.

My first computer was an Acer AT with an EGA monitor and a 5 ¼” floppy drive. No mouse, no Windows, just good ol’ MS-DOS. I didn’t have a hard drive at first, and when I got one it was 20 MB. Now my hard drive is 250 GB…sheesh!

The best pizza I ever ate came in the mail. My sister ordered it as a thank-you gift from a restaurant in Chicago that ships pizzas frozen and they assure their customers that the pizza will be kept frozen for its entire journey. She specifically shipped it to my work address so it wouldn’t thaw out sitting on my front porch while I was at work. When it was delivered to my desk, the corners of the box were soggy. It had obviously thawed. And not only that, but some idiot carrying it had turned it over on its side. So, when I got it home and opened it, all the cheese and toppings were slid over to one side. But I could instantly smell the fresh garlic. So, I took a spatula and tried to re-spread the cheese and toppings evenly over the pizza. It LOOKED terrible. I mean this was the ugliest pizza you ever saw. But I think it took on the “twice-baked” quality that re-heated foods often do and this was the most flavorful, yummylicious pizza I ever had. Of course, I told my sister about it and she immediately complained to the restaurant and they actually argued with her and tried to deny that there was any possibility that the pizza wasn’t kept frozen. She finally convinced them and they reimbursed her the shipping charges.

I’m not sure exactly what Bruce meant by an "adult" book. The first book I ever read that wasn’t a Doctor Seuss-type book with big print was “Charlottes’s Web.” I guess that’s still a childrens book, but I remember it so well because it was the first “real” book I ever read that was quite thick and didn’t rhyme. I considered it a huge accomplishment when I was about 7 years old. I guess the first actual adult book I ever read was “To Kill a Mocking Bird” and it was a school assignment. I didn’t quite finish it, but I read enough to answer all the questions on the test in class. Other famous books that I read over half of, but was so bored I couldn’t finish them, were “Little Women” and “The Hobbit.”

Well, I have an all-day meeting to attend. If they have wireless internet, I'll be sure to let you know if they happen to toss out any interesting phrases like "post-modern."

(We had a minister who said that six or seven times in each sermon, so "post-modern" has become a running gag.)

TOTD

The Miracle of The Boston Strangler's Apartment.
Hmmmm...

New game - put together recognizable bits and pieces of titles to come up with a new one!  And add a snippet of plot, if possible.

How about:

Some Like the Odd Meteor.  (Curtis/Lemmon/Wood)

Two astrophysicist roommates become ensnared in the life of their bimbo neighbor.  Or is it the other way around?  (Think Big Bang Theory with real actors.)

Good morning, all! I could sleep late this morning, so I did. I will shortly be arranging Christmas music.

I will reiterate that it was delightful spending an evening with DR Ben and the Chad Mitchell Trio, and I will try to locate the songs I had not heard before, maybe even resort to calling Joe Frazier.

TOD:
Natalie Wood: Gypsy, West Side Story, Inside Daisy Clover
Jack Lemmon: The Apartment, Irma la Douce, Mr Roberts
Tony Curtis: Sweet Smell of Success, Some Like It Hot

I'll be starting the NCIS - Season 5 box set today. I noticed that Michael Weatherley does an audio commentary on the very first episode, but since I didn't start catching up with the show until after the writer's strike, I'll have the watch that first episode twice to catch the plot and then go back and hear his (certain to be) joke-filled comments.

And with that, I'm heading back to bed, to catch up on my sleep.  Buster, I think, would like to cuddle a bit, too.

I see that der B has replaced the TV that was in his room, which burnt out, with an older one that used to be in his room when we lived in Long Beach.  The screen is much smaller.

Which means that, when I'm watching DVDs in his room, Doctor Who will more closely resemble Doctor Where.

I'm up, I'm up and I, too, had very weird dreams - I was trying to get to some airport to make a flight on which I was flying first class.  I've already forgotten who my traveling companion was, but I was in some weird hotel and downstairs waiting for a car and realized I didn't have my luggage or computer.  So, I called upstairs and my parents were there (odd, since they've been dead for over thirty years), but this guy I've known for some time answered the phone and wouldn't put them on and finally he said he'd bring the stuff downstairs, which he did about thirty minutes later - no suitcase, only the computer.  There was no time to deal with it.  My companion said he was thrilled because he liked to buy all new things for each trip.  The clock was ticking and we somehow got to the airport, got in the security line.  At this point, I had a computer, one jacket, and a toothbrush and hairbrush in a shopping bag.  I got through security easily (I'd left my keys and change and cell phone in my pocket and still got through).  But we were nowhere near the gate, and then it was one of those endless will we ever get there moments - by the time I got to the gate my traveling companion was gone, but I made the flight, although I woke up before actually getting on the plane.

Well, I got up too late to start and finish my jog before she of the Evil Eye gets here, so I have two choices - I can begin it WHEN she gets here just before nine, or I can wait until I get back.  We'll see how I feel.  I do find it's a bit easier earlier.

Jose, I wrote extensively about the first Bacharach/Trijntje CD - it's one of the best albums of the last twenty years, with superb charts mostly by Pat Williams (who also produced), conducted by the great Vince Mendoza (who also did a few arrangements), and the orchestra is wonderful.  All recorded and mixed by Al "Schmitty" Schmidt.

I did have time to rewatch the episode and listen to Michael Weatherly's commentary. He had his mother with him in the sound booth, so the commentary had little to do with the episode. Instead, he asked his mother a bunch of questions about the things concerning the show that she liked and didn't like. Not the best commentary.

Good Evening!

So...  I ventured here and there once again today.  However, instead of heading to Shake Shack for the Cookies & Cream Frozen Custard - I've had that before - I headed down to the East Village to check out a place called "Sundaes and Cones".  A friend of mine had tipped me off to it, and once I read some of the blurbs about it, I guess I had read about it before.  In any case...

A couple of the "reviews" commented on the very austere and stark design of the place, well... I guess it is, but, to my eyes, it just looked very streamlined and clean - lots of white.  But, of course, one does not go to a place called "Sundaes and Cones" to look at the decor.

I settled on a scoop of their Guava and a scoop of their Taro Root.  Both flavors were quite yummy.  A bunch of the reviews mentioned how they featured "strange and exotic" flavors like Black Sesame, Red Bean, Taro Root, etc.  Well, I guess I was expecting some truly strange and exotic flavors since nothing in the case really shocked me.  I mean, Red Bean, Taro and Black Sesame are "traditional" Japanese and Chinese ice cream flavors, and even Green Tea ice cream is more or less mainstream now.  (Right?)  In any case...

The scoops were very generous, the flavors bright and clean, and the price very right - $4.75. :)

*Oh, I did sample their Wasabi Ice Cream... Whoa!  -Now that was a new one for me, and the sample was just enough.  If I want some spicy heat in my ice cream, I'll still to the "Wicked" Chocolate from Jean-Jacques, or the Aztec from Marie-Belle.

...I also did a bit more exploring of the Whole Foods down on Houston Street.  It's a great two-level location, with a good portion of the second floor devoted to a couple of small "restaurants" (Italian, salads, sushi, coffee bar, etc.)

Alas, the Turkish Delight "bar" seems to have been discontinued, but the Pommes Frites bar is still there, as is the satellite location of Il Laboratorio del Gelato.  I did check out the "Fromagerie" - their cheese cave - this time.  Lots of stinky, moldy goodness in there!

I also noticed that they had an "exotic egg" section among the produce: duck eggs, quail eggs, and ostrich eggs(!).

*FYI - the ostrich eggs are only $39.00 each.  ;)

Jose, since you're a Shake Shack fan, what's your impression of the service?  I mean, since it's a Danny Meyer operation, and that's what he's known for...

Funny you should ask that, since the way it's set up - a counter-window operation - the "service" is sort of a non-issue, bad or good.

The "problem" is just the popularity of the place.  Even the "B Line" - the non-hot food line can run slower than one would like, and the regular line is usually about 30 people deep.  However, people don't seem to mind waiting anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour in line for their burgers and shakes.  It all really depends how prepared people are to give their order once they get to the window - and how many orders they are placing.

*A lot of people go into the B Line to get a beer or some other beverage, then take that back to their friends who are in the main line.  -Alas, that sort of slows up the B Line.  -And I'm not sure I agree with the "no shakes" policy at the B Line either.  They could still just hand out a "buzzer" for anyone ordering just a shake.  But at least you know that the shakes are made to order.

**I also think it's sort of funny that Shake Shack originally started off as a high end hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, but now it seems that the burgers have taken over.

Well, I have returned  from a very interesting, but for the most part enjoyable birthday at the Red Wind Casino down George's way, near Olympia (actually Nisqually).  I went with my sister, brother-in-law, and our good friend, Carole.  I have known Carole for about 35 years; and my sister and I are the godparents to her handsome son, Tony.

I say interesting, because it is always unusual for a recovering alcoholic (me) to spend several hours with people who are not recovering.  Still it was a nice day.

I feel like the firefly who backed into an electric fan....

Yes - I am dee-lighted.  Why, you ask?

Because I just listened to a sweLL Cd that I received in the mail.  It is the original Soundtrack from the movie SCENT OF MYSTERY.

Never saw the movie in any of its forms, barely knew about it.  But now I am up to speed.  MR BK's book notes are informative, personal, personable, and funny.  It's kind of like Walter Cronkite's old Friday night show...You Are There....

The art of the booklet is funny....when the DVD is removed, you have a facsimile of the original Smell Instructions/Sequence.  And even the hole in the center of the CD is in a funny place....to say the least.

And the music is quirky and fun.  My favorite tracks are Oh Yes, Beautiful, which is then sung as Scent of Mystery by Mr Eddie Fisher.  And The Chase, which threatens to turn into Marian the Librarian, and is also later sung by Mr Fisher.

But the BEST BEST BEST is the overture with car horns and sound effects ALL over the place!

Congratulations to Kritzerland on giving 1000 people the chance to hear this quirky musicale.

Yet another GONE WITH THE WIND performer has shuffled off to his reward. Fred Crane, who played one of the Tarleton twins (George Reeves played the other). He died in a hospital near Atlanta at age 90 from a blood clot in his lung while being treated for diabetes.

Please tell Mr Miller thanks very much, it is great fun to have this photo - and it will go into the book along with the autographed photo that you got for me awhile back, also from AOPP!

On the q.v. - you might ask Mr Miller to expand on his German napkin story...I have a feeling his autobiography could have required a plain brown wrapper, if he had so chosen.

I had seen some of the NCIS episodes before. I guess I watched them when shows were in reruns leading up to going back to work after the writers' strike. Of the six, I think I had seen three of them.

My favorite had to do with a ghost ship which the team explores thinking there might be an airborne virus on board. Good episode with a great surprise ending.

I like NCIS, once a week.....

The cast is very ingratiating. Every character has cute quirks which make it an easy show to watch. CRIMINAL MINDS, on the other hand, is a heavier, more solemn show. I'm supposed to be getting that third season set next month for review.
Title: Re:BEGIN THE BEGUINE

I also had time to watch the one bonus feature on the second disc, a 10-minute "making of" featurette on the episode which scored the highest ratings of the season. It was called "Requium."
Title: Re:BEGIN THE BEGUINE
Post by: Matt H. on August 23, 2008, 08:10:26 PM
And after I watched "Requium," I went back and listened to the audio commentary with Mark Harmon and the writer of the episode. Started off very slowly. I thought they were just going to watch the show, but they finally started talking more consistently.

DR MattH - This may have been asked before, but...

If you happen to get a box set of a TV series that you already watched "religiously" during it's original broadcast - say, even took notes - would it be possible for you just to skim through the DVDs to get a general idea of the look of the DVDs?  -And then just watch the bonus features and extras?

I haven't figured out how to end my birthday evening (since neither td or Kerry are here).  Should I watch something light and trivial such as one of Basil Rathbone SHERLOCK HOLMES box set; or should I concentrate on something deeper, such as 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH?

Oh well, maybe I will just watch the Mariners game and then go to sleep.

Back from La La's.  I tried something new rather than the usual half chicken I get.  I had a double chicken breast with carmelized onions and garlic on top, and a tiny salad with very light dressing.  The chicken breasts were very, very thin and nice-sized, but I have to believe the calorie count on the meal was well under 1500, although I'm quite full at this moment.  I'll definitely be having that again.

No, I watch everything again for the simple reason that if there are sound or video issues anywhere in the episodes, I couldn't report faithfully if I didn't watch everything again. I know other reviewers just sample these box sets and admit that they watch only one or two episodes per disc, but I watch everything.

I do have to grit my teeth with some of the shows I have to watch, but most network series are professionally done, even if it's not quite down my alley. It's the cable stuff like A SHOT OF LOVE or COLLEGE HILL INTERNS that make me cringe.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that it's MUCH easier to review these when you've already seen the shows before. When I finish NCIS, I'll start on THE SHIELD, and I devoured all 10 episodes in that set when they were aired originally, so it's much easier to follow something when you're hitting it for the second or third time.

Speaking of Madeline Kahn...right this very minute, I'm copying a videotape of Scrambled Feet, starring Madeline to my DVD burner!  I copied the video from a rental that a friend of mine rented from a place in Seattle.  It was a very good original and the copy that I made is very good, also.  Madeline Kahn's great.  The show is fun, not hysterically funny, but good. ;)

I wish I had taken my camera along. We flew over the most awesomely beautiful clouds. Then we flew along the Las Vegas Strip, turned at the Stratosphere (not much over the top of it), and flew parallel to the Strip to the airport to land. I resisted all the slot machines in the airport until we made our connection to Phoenix.
